Students compete at conference – The Zionsville Community High School Chapter of Business Professionals of America competed at the 2017 BPA Regional Leadership Conference this month. The students placed in 38 different events, resulting in 49 of the 96 students meeting qualification guidelines for the State Leadership Conference in March. ZCHS had 15 individual region champions and three team region champions, in addition to 14 runner-up individuals and one runner-up team.

Player of the Week – Zionsville resident Will Dixon of Trine University has been named a MIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

This is Dixon’s first Player of the Week honor this season and the fifth of his career.

ZPD names Officer of the Year

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Police Dept. Lt. Bryan Sauer heard rumors he might have been nominated for Officer of the Year. But he’s heard those rumors in previous years. achievement “I didn’t put much thought into it. I was absolutely shocked,” Sauer said when his name was announced at the ZPD Christmas Awards earlier this month. “I had no clue that I even had a shot at getting it. I’m the first person as a supervisor rank to get it. In the past, everyone who had gotten it had been an officer at the time.”

ZPD Chief Robert Knox said Sauer is dedicated and well-respected by his colleagues.

“He’s been promoted a couple times since I’ve been chief,” Knox said. “He does a really good job as a supervisor. He’s our senior emergency vehicles operations instructor. He’s one of the directors of the reserve division. He’s also one of the field training officers for the agency. He puts in quality work and we thought he was deserving

of this recognition.”

The nominations come from the officers in the department, and the administrators make the choice. Sauer, a Whitestown resident, was modest about his selection.

“For the most part, I didn’t do anything above and beyond what others do,” Sauer said. “As a lieutenant, I’m responsible for a lot of things. I just see it as doing my job. As night shift lieutenant, I’m responsible for both night shifts, so anything that happens at night flows through to me. I help out with our cars, put the police equipment in them and maintain them. I re-did the field training program this year. I’ve worked a lot of extra days to allow other people to go to training and cover other people’s vacations. I’m on the Bike Patrol.”

Sauer, who has been with ZPD for 13 years, has been a lieutenant for more than a year. He graduated from Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis in 1998 and IUPUI in 2002 with a bachelor’s of science degree with a major in criminal justice and minor in sociology.

Lego building contest – Earth Explorer Toys will present the annual Lego Building Contest running from Jan. 14-21. The theme is Indiana Landmarks. This theme goes along with the Indiana history curriculum taught in the schools and can include any structure or locale that has an Indiana history. AED’s donated – On Dec. 12, Bolt For The Heart (BFTH) Foundation continued to deliver on its promise to equip Indiana State Police patrol vehicles with lifesaving Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) by presenting a gift of 95 AEDs. This was in addition to the more than 50 AEDs presented to ISP in March. To date, 215 AEDs have been gifted to the Indiana State Police from the BFTH foundation.

ZEF executive director role becomes two jobs

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com It’s a job that requires wearing so many hats, the Zionsville Education Foundation board decided to split education it into two positions.

The role of executive director, a part-time position recently vacated by Tracy Phillips, will be divided into two separate part-time positions when the Copher job is posted later this week.

“The executive director position is a job that requires a lot of talent, because you’re doing a lot of different things,” said Missy Copher, ZEF

board president. “The thought was if we divide it and divide the responsibility, it would allow two individuals to really focus on their specific tasks, and hopefully be able to accomplish more than just one person.”

One of the two positions, chief operating officer, will focus on administrative tasks, marketing, communications, finance and grant support. The other position, chief development officer, will focus on funPhillips draising, including the annual donor stewardship and corporate sponsorship.

“Of course, we want it to be collaborative, and we want them working together and supporting

one another in those roles,” Copher said.

Copher said many other educational foundations in the area have similar models.

The previous position was a part-time, 30hour position, but Phillips was working beyond that amount, so the board decided to make the new roles 20-hour positions.

“We realize that we may be retooling six to 12 months into the job,” Copher said. “We acknowledge that we need to be flexible and open in the process.”

Applications will be accepted through the end of January. Copher wants to have the positions filled in time for the spring grant cycle. In 2016, ZEF donated $102,000 in grants to Zionsville schools.

Librarian covers bookmobiles

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A chance sighting of a bookmobile in Illinois led Orty Ortwein, the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library’s assistant department head, down a path to write his books first book.

“I was embarrassed as a librarian that I didn’t know that they were still around,” Ortwein said. “Frankly, I hadn’t seen one for a long time.”

He became intrigued and began to write blog posts on the subject until he realized he had enough material to compile a book.

“Finally, it became a full-blown project,” he said.

Ortwein was surprised that no one had published anything recently about bookmobiles, so he used Amazon’s self-publishing service.

More than 200 bookmobiles are covered in “Bookmobiles in America: An Illustrated History,” which follows the variety of ways bookmobiles have evolved from horse-drawn wagons through today’s variations.

The book is divided into hundreds of shorter entries about books and ways that they are transported around the world. It has many entries about the Midwest.

Ortwein said that Carmel has a small bookmobile and many library systems in Indiana utilize them, with many traveling to senior centers.

“They’re making a mild comeback,” he said.

“As library budgets get cut, they’re a cheaper alternative, which is not a good thing,” He occasionally adds items to the blog at bookmobiles.wordpress.com as he comes across them.

“Anyone who is interested in libraries or who works in the library world would find this interesting,” Ortwein said.

Grant to fund recycling center

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zion Nature Center will receive a triplesorting recycling center in May thanks to a grant from Boone County Solid Waste District.

The receptacle will environment include three separate bins for cans/bottles, paper and trash.

“The recycling center will be used by guests visiting the Zion Nature Center. The three compartments will help streamline our glass/ plastic recycling, paper recycling and trash within the Nature Center. Boone County Solid Waste Management district does have outside recycling centers where Boone County residents can drop off their recycling materials if they don’t have curbside pickup,” Park Naturalist and Nature Center Manager Mindy Murdock stated in an email.

The nature center has regular-sized recycling bins throughout the center, but officials hope the larger, more visual container will help with sorting items to be recycled.

“Our recycling bins don’t list what can be placed in them, so many recyclable materials are accidentally thrown away, or non-recyclables are placed in the bin, and we have to sort through them before emptying the containers,” Murdock said.

She also said the recycling center was selected for the nature center because of its size, clear labeling and because it is made out of 1,439 recycled milk cartons.

“Unlike some recycled products, it doesn’t contain any foam fillers or other materials, so in the future, if we need to replace the bin, we can recycle it,” Murdock said.

Zion Nature Center will use the center as an educational tool to teach the community about the benefits of recycling. It will eventually be placed in the foyer of the new Zion Nature Center, which is planned near Heritage Trail Park.

“In addition to the normal use of the bin, we will have signage discussing the importance of recycling. We will also have information highlighting some of the other conservation and sustainable services that the Zionsville Parks Dept. does, such as our invasive plant work within the parks, our Pull for Parks in April of every year, and our Creekfest creek cleanup that takes place in August,” Murdock said.

The effect of getting out of bed in the cold Commentary by Ward Degler The bedroom was chilly the other morning after the temperature outside had plummeted into the single digits the plain talk night before. I seriously considered diving back under the covers and hibernating until spring.

While shivering my way through making the coffee and letting the dog out, I recalled what it was like getting up when I was a kid.

In the North Woods of Wisconsin we had a wood-burning stove in the living room. That is what heated the house. The fire usually went out at night and dad had to shovel the ashes from the bottom of the stove, put crumpled paper and kindling on the grate and add heavier wood as the blaze began to build.

Warmth began to ooze from the stove after a few minutes. That’s when he would roust me out of bed.

If you’ve never been in the northern regions of Wisconsin in January, let me paint you a picture. Frost formed on the walls, and the windows congealed with thick ice. We used to stick pennies on the windows in the winter, and collect them when the ice melted in the

spring.

The trick was to get out of bed without getting frostbite. I kept a pair of cotton socks under my pillow, and before I stuck my nose out from under the covers, I slipped them onto my feet.

Then I wrapped a blanket around my shoulders, grabbed my clothes and raced into the living room where I slipped cozily behind the stove.

The uniform for January in the North Woods started with long johns, red wooly ones that caused a more or less permanent rash in delicate places. Then came the flannel shirt, long sleeved and buttoned at the collar. The pants were corduroy lined with more flannel. Finally, the wool sweater and wool socks, long ones that pulled up over the long johns.

Once I was dressed and dad had adjusted the damper on the stove so it wouldn’t melt, we went into the kitchen where mom was trying to pretend she enjoyed standing near zero temperatures while having it out with a balky wood-burning cook stove. More than once our oatmeal was only partially cooked, and mom had a look in her eye that said she was close to committing mayhem.

We left Wisconsin a short time later and moved into a house that had central heating.

I haven’t put socks under my pillow nor worn red wooly long johns since then.

Of course, I’ve never been back in Wisconsin in January, either.

As the holiday season wraps up and a new year quickly approaches, the 2016 tax year comes to an end as well. While it may feel too early to be thinking about taxes, a topic that is sometimes overlooked in family law matters is the determination as to which parent shall be allowed to claim the children as dependents on their State and Federal Income tax returns in any given year.

While it may have once been common for Judges to order the parents to alternate claiming the children, under the Indiana Child Support Rules and Guidelines the objective is to achieve an order which will make the most money available for the children.

Therefore, there is no certainty that in each case the parties will be ordered to alternate claiming the children. However, keep in mind, that when a Court is determining an order to release the tax exemption, there are several factors that can be considered. The following factors include: (1) the value of the exemption at the marginal tax rate of each parent; (2) the income of each parent; (3) the age of the child(ren) and how long the exemption will be available; (4) the percentage of the cost of supporting the child(ren) born by each parent; (5) the financial aid benefit for post-secondary education for the child(ren); (6) the financial burden assumed by each parent under the property settlement in the case; and (7) any other relevant factors,(including health insurance tax subsidies or tax penalties under the Affordable Care Act).

One imperative factor that parents must understand is that the Decree of Dissolution or Court’s Order may not alone, by itself, be adequate to effectuate the terms in the Decree with respect to each parent’s ability to claim the children as dependents. Remember, in

order for the noncustodial parent to claim the child(ren) on her/his tax return, the custodial parent must execute the IRS Form 8332, thereby relinquishing her/his right to claim the children as dependants for that tax year. In general, the Courts cannot order that one party has the right to claim the children, but rather that one party must take all steps necessary in order for the other party to claim the children in a certain year, such as signing the IRS Form 8332. Additionally, signing the release is often contingent upon child support being current for the calendar year for which the exemption is ordered, as incentive to keep child support payments current. In fact, the Indiana Child Support Rules and Guidelines indicates in order for the parent who is obligated to pay child support and wants to claim the exemption, that parent must have paid at least ninety-five percent (95%) of their court ordered support for the calendar year in which the exemption is sought by January 31st of the following year. Thus, in order for the child support paying parent to claim the exemption in 2016, that parent must be at least 95% current by January 31, 2017.

So, while taxes can be a nightmare in and of themselves, hopefully with discussion and thoughtful planning, the child tax exemption doesn’t have to be included in that headache. Zionsville teen receives statewide honor for overcoming learning disabilities

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Caroline Adie, it was love at first sight.

She took a day to observe classes at Fortune Academy, a school designed to help those with language learning cover story difficulties, in Lawrence Township in Indianapolis.

“I had the best experience ever in a school setting,” Adie said. “When I got in the car, I cried because I wanted to come back the next day. I didn’t want to go back to my old school.

It impacted me so much. It impacted my mom and dad so much that they felt they had to get me there ASAP.” So Adie, 17, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia, transferred from Zionsville West Middle School during the middle of eighth grade.

“That wasn’t working out very well,” Adie said. “The social and education aspect just wasn’t for me.”

Now a Fortune senior, Adie has flourished.

She received the 2016 Learn Dream & Achieve Award this fall. The award, given annually by the Learning Disabilities Association of Indiana, honors the accomplishments of an Indiana high school or college student who has a learning disability or attention deficit disorder.

“I’m very honored,” said Adie, who became the second student to win the award in the school’s 15-year history. “I didn’t realize how big a deal it was until I went to the actual ceremony. I didn’t realize it was a statewide thing.”

Adie was nominated by her head of school, Janet George, who also is the school’s founder.

“It was a complete surprise,” said Adie, who didn’t know she was even nominated.

Adie said a real difference maker was learning the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading, spelling and writing instruction. Fortune Academy is one of 13 schools in the nation to teach the O-G approach, which focuses on the needs and learning styles of individual students.

“I had it for a half a year, and I’m reading so much better now,” Adie said. “It changed me.

I saw the world differently. It’s indescribable how much it helped with spelling, reading, every aspect.”

Adie said the smaller classes provided more individualized help.

“My social skills have been better,”

Adie said. “I’ve come a far way, especially confidence-wise.”

George has watched the growth.

“She’s come a long way from a very introverted child with no confidence and who lacked academic skills, and the social emotional part as well,” George said. “She’s blossomed into a really confident young woman ready to go to college. She’s prepared, and she’ll be able to do whatever she puts her mind to. She has leadership qualities and started her own business here. That speaks volumes of how far she’s come.”

Adie and a former student created a business called Organization, Copying and other Duties as needed for teachers as a project in January 2016.

“She ended up not staying at the school, so I took over full management,” said Adie, who has one employee. “It’s to help out teachers who don’t have time to do little things that would make a difference. We can do bulletin boards or rearrange the classroom. They can buy the

certificate, or a student can buy it for them.”

In addition, Adie has worked at the Goodwill Industries store in Whitestown as a cashier for five months and as a babysitter.

Adie plans to major in nursing at the University of Southern Indiana. Amy Adie said her daughter has always wanted to be a nurse.

“We knew we had to get a better environ-

ment for her testing and her grades so she would be able to do that,” said Amy, who has worked as the academy’s business manager for two years. “The smaller classroom and family-like atmosphere helps. We drive 35 miles to get here. It was a big commitment for us.”

But well worth it.

Meet caroline adie • Personal: Has attended Camp Tecumseh YMCA Campers in Leadership Training. She plans to become a counselor after her freshman year of college. Adie played volleyball for four years at Fortune Academy.

• Hobby: “I shoot in Glock (pistols) competitions. That’s a hobby of mine, going to the range with my dad and killing paper, as my dad would say. I did get first place at one competition.”

• Favorite TV shows: “Daredevil” and “Limitless.”

• Favorite class: “Chemistry. I’ve always loved math. Math is really fun. When it comes to word problems in math, that goes downhill fast. But I feel I’m good with numbers.”

• Why nursing?: “The only thing I knew I wanted to do when I got older is to work with children and help them. I always kind of wanted to be a doctor. But I knew that would be too much for me, so I decided on nursing.

There are so many options to work with children in nursing.”

The construction was done by Henri Najem’s brother, Anthony, who is CEO of Meyer Najem.

“We’ve done Henri’s restaurants for years,” Anthony said.

During a grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 15, General Manager Jim Shields presented a check for $1,000 to Theresa Hanners, executive director of The Caring Center, which will receive 10 percent of the restaurant’s profits once a month.

Patrick’s to close at year’s end

After five years in Boone Village, followed by five years on Main Street, Patrick’s Kitchen and Drinks will close its restaurant doors at the end of 2016.

Owners Patrick Mullen and Beth Dickerson made the decision not to renew their lease at the location inside the Brick Street Inn. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce our closing,” the couple announced on Facebook Dec. 19.

The last day of operation will be New Year’s Eve, when the owners traditionally have a celebration at the restaurant. This year will be a reservations-only farewell feast, with limited seating from 5 to 9 p.m.

Mullen was hesitant to share future plans but said that they are waiting to announce more when they have “concrete answers.”

“We have always thought of Patrick’s as belonging to Zionsville, and we were just the caretakers,” Mullen said in a statement. “We

are proud of our contribution to the community, and feel that we’ve been more than just a place to eat and more than just a job for our staff.”

The restaurant first opened in Boone Village in 2007. Five years later, as their lease was about to expire, the owners searched for a new location and found an ideal spot on Main Street, where they signed a five-year lease.

Thanks to assistance from the community, they moved their restaurant in three days.

A fire outside of the inn impacted the restaurant in 2012, but it reopened with a new chef, new menu and new phase for the restaurant.

Dickerson and Mullen will continue to operate Patrick’s Smokehouse Kitchen inside Danny Boy Beer Works in the Village of West Clay.

“We will miss Patrick’s and his food and his staff,” said Rinkey Boleman, a frequent diner and Zionsville resident. “I’m just glad that they’re going to be over at the Smokehouse Kitchen.”

Have hope as ’17 dawns Here we are - some would say thankfully - nearing the end of 2016. For our community, it mostly was a fine year, especially in terms of progressive growth and development as well as infrastructure improvements we couldn’t have imagined even 10 years ago. Our “world” is changing, and it is doing so for the better, we believe. Outside the local environs it was tumultuous, to say the least. The presidential election was a shock to many on both sides of the aisle, but the run-up to Nov. 8 was a war-torn effort that was equally, if not more so, a train wreck. We once termed primary season a clown show; that didn’t do it justice.

With apologies to our soon-to-be former first lady who said she doubts otherwise, we all should retain some sense of hope that what is wrong in our midst will be made whole at some point soon. Without hope, what is there? We prefer to not even contemplate that. In life, we’re often told to play the hand we’re dealt, and doing so really is as simple as this equation: E+R=O, or event plus response equals outcome. We believe if you seek the bad, probably it will be bad, and if you seek the good, probably it will be good. People have pointed fingers at us for focusing on “bad things.” We do that on occasion in the interest of protecting our readers’ rights. So as we prepare to turn yet another calendar page, we’re hoping for the good - with stability - and all things growth in 2017. Here’s to you, and Happy New Year from all of us at Current Publishing.

A drop of whiskey Commentary by Terry Anker Often, when meeting a person of some renown, we are deeply disappointed. Yet, in other precious encounters, our already high expectations are exceeded and overcome by the distinctive and important comportment of our hero. Such was the occasion in a recent exchange with famed author and television commentator Doris Kearns Goodwin. With best-selling books including “Team of Rivals” on Abraham Lincoln and “The Bully Pulpit” about Theodore Roosevelt, Goodwin is a bona fide success story. She has earned a place as the preeminent commentator on the American presidency and its place in our culture — and that of the modern and evolving world.

Thanks to the annual legislative conference of law firm Bingham Greenbaum and Doll, The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site and Indiana Humanities hosted an interview and discussion with Goodwin during her recent visit. Invited to moderate the talk, I had occasion to interact and see her in action. Affable and open, she reflected on what

history can teach us regarding expansive current topics, including our natural desire to leave a legacy, the impact of fake news and the importance of common understanding to effective communication.

Goodwin spoke honestly about her concerns for our present — and for our future.

We considered the general loss of confidence in the institutions upon which we’ve built the very foundations of our nation. She told stories that gave us pause, and confidence, that the future is ours to shape. But we must hang on to a bit of humor to get us through the difficult patches. Goodwin quoted her most famous subject, Abraham Lincoln, thusly, “A good story is better than a drop of whiskey.” She has a point. But then again, doesn’t it depend on the story and, more importantly, on the whiskey?

The unthinkable has happened, people.

I’ve lost my calendar! My reliable, omnipotent, executive planner is humor GONE. And though I’m pretty sure it’s sitting on a shelf next to clearance candles at Bed Bath & Beyond, a phone call proved otherwise.

What am I to do?

I’m not exaggerating when I say that calendar is the only reason this family functions at a reasonably acceptable level. Appointments, practices, rehearsals, meetings, birthdays, games, competitions, parties, deadlines, surgeries, anniversaries — every single detail of our lives are in that calendar. In fact, if something fails to be placed in “the calendar,” it’s essentially dead to us.

It won’t be remembered, and it certainly won’t happen. It just won’t.

So I’m in full panic mode. I know two visits to the orthodontists are coming up, but I’m not sure which day or for which kid.

I also know January has eight family birthdays, and apart from my twin sister’s and my niece’s on the same day, I’ve got nothing! Sweet mercy, what am I to do?

Of course, my oldest thinks I’m silly for trusting such a monumental task to pen and paper when my phone could act more efficiently — and with better back-up capabilities. But I’m not going to lie. I look forward to sitting down at the start of each January and planning the year out. I like seeing how close spring break is. I like flipping to July and penciling in a prospective beach vacation. I like discovering what day Halloween falls on, and then considering whether a personal day will be in order. The experience isn’t the same on a Samsung 6.

More importantly, though, I love that my old calendars serve as physical reminders of the memories my family makes throughout the years. To know that when my kids grow up and have children of their own, I’ll be able to pull out 2016 and tell them all about their dad’s broken nose or their mom’s marching band championship. So I have to find that calendar. The alternative is unthinkable.

Each summer, the Great American Songbook Foundation brings together 40 of the nation’s top high school vocalists for its weeklong Songbook Academy and competition. Only concert one is named Songbook Youth Ambassador for the coming year, performing with Foundation founder Michael Feinstein at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center.

At 8 p.m. Jan. 7, 2017, for the first time the foundation will welcome back all seven of its previous Ambassadors when the Center for the Performing Arts presents the inaugural Songbook Academy All-Stars concert, a special evening of music at the Palladium in Carmel. Honey and blackberry cheesecake with gingersnap crust Recipe by the National Honey Board via Family Features Crust: • 2 cups (8-ounce package) crushed gingersnaps • 1/4 cup melted butter Cake: • 1 1/2 pounds cream cheese, softened • 3/4 cup honey • 1/3 cup heavy cream • 1 tablespoon vanilla • 1 tablespoon gluten-free all-purpose flour • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 4 large eggs • 1 pint fresh blackberries Garnish: • 1 pint fresh blackberries (optional) • Honey (optional) Directions: Heat oven to 350F. In medium bowl, combine crushed gingersnaps and butter. Transfer mixture to 9-inch springform pan. Stick hand in sandwich bag and firmly press mixture into bottom of pan to form crust. Bake 8 minutes. Remove from oven, reduce heat to 300F and allow crust to rest.

Ruins of Shobak Castle Commentary by Don Knebel A Crusader castle approximately 130 miles south of Amman, Jordan, proved impenetrable but nonetheless vulnerable. Its travel capture ended with an unexpected gesture of wartime kindness.

On July 15, 1099, knights of the First Crusade captured Jerusalem from the Muslims and established the Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1115, Baldwin I, the first king of Jerusalem, built an imposing stone fortress atop an isolated conical mountain east of the Jordan River to control trade between Damascus and the Red Sea. Named Krak de Montreal (Castle of the Royal Mountain) to reflect the king’s contribution to its construction, the fortress marked the eastern dividing line between Christian and Muslim territories. Because of its design and location, Krak de Montreal withstood a number of assaults. In 1187, after recapturing Jerusalem, Saladin began an 18-month siege of the fortress. Starving defenders exchanged their wives and children for food and reportedly went blind from lack of salt. Running out of both food and wives, the Christians sur-

rendered in May 1189. Saladin, known both for his skill in battle and magnanimity in victory, repatriated the wives and children.

The Mamelukes modified the fortress in the 14th century, and it gradually fell into disrepair.

The partially restored fortress, now known as Shobak Castle after its name in Arabic, lies in a still remote region along the highway that connects Amman to the Gulf of Aqaba. Visitors can see the remains of two churches from the Crusader period and large rocks used in unsuccessful efforts to attack the fortress with catapults. They also can see writings from the Quran carved in stone and a simple throne, both probably from the time of Saladin.

Medieval fortress ruins are not for everyone. But for anyone wanting to see a Crusader castle with an interesting history, Shobak Castle should be on the list.
