Bonds to fund school roof repairs

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Eagle and Pleasant View elementary schools are one step closer to getting new roofs after the Zionsville school board approved the issuance of two $2 million general education obligation bonds to fund them and other projects.

The roof repairs are among top priorities identified by a recent facilities study. Other projects funded through the bonds are window and door updates, curb repairs and replacement of the central plant at Pleasant View and renovations to the tennis courts at Zionsville Middle School.

According to ZCS, the maximum annual debt service fund tax rate necessary to pay the annual debt service of the bonds is estimated at nearly 4 cents per $100 in assessed valuation, but with increases in assessed values and debt being paid down elsewhere, the district does not expect the tax rate to change much, if at all.

“We are very pleased to be able to stand here

and say we can do this and we can maintain a consistent tax rate without disrupting in any material way the projections we showed you when we did the budget hearing on Oct. 10,” Shafer said.

The board unanimously approved the resolutions after a public hearing during which no one spoke. The district expects to award bids for the projects in February with renovations beginning in May and finishing by Aug. 31, 2017.

In other action, the school board: • Approved Ethics in Science and Studio Art (AP): 2D Art as new classes at Zionsville Community High School for the 2017-18 school year.

• Authorized the advertisement of bids for a farm lease of approximately 200 acres of land owned by ZCS. Last year the lease brought in nearly $60,000 to the general fund.

• Approved a request to trade in five aging maintenance vehicles to purchase a new utility tractor and RTV utility vehicle.

New role – Governor-elect Eric Holcomb announced that Susana Duarte De Suarez will serve as the executive director of strategic communications in the governor’s office beginning Jan. 9, 2017. Suarez is president of the Zionsville Town Council and has Suarez served in various roles for both Bush administrations, as executive director of the Hispanic International Trade Council and as deputy director for political coalitions with the Republican National Committee.

Library hours – The library will be closed for the holidays from Dec. 23 to 26. Online resources will still be available at ZionsvilleLibrary.org. Regular hours resume Dec. 27.

Lilly Scholars announced – Zionsville Community High School students Jessica Miller and Calvin Robinson have been selected for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program. They will receive a four-year full tuition scholarship to the Indiana college of their choice, as well as a $900 yearly stipend for books and equipment leading to a baccalaureate degree.

License branch holiday hours – All BMV license branches will be closed from Dec. 23 to Dec. 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday. All license branches resume normal business hours Dec. 27. In addition, license branches will be closed from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2 in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

When he began coaching at ZCHS, one of his first players was Brad Stevens, former Butler University men’s basketball coach and current Boston Celtics head coach.

“I really enjoy coaching from a standpoint that I obviously love the game, but I think it’s a great teacher in terms of life lessons that kids can take on and use in their lives,” Isenbarger said. “I hope every once in a while to connect on that level.”

Face it, staying up until midnight on New Year’s Eve can be a struggle. The Zion Nature Center has a solution: Noon holidays Year’s Eve, an early celebration geared for all ages.

“We were looking at a way to do a New Year’s Eve program with a nature education twist, but to have the building open that late causes a lot of problems for our animals as well as staff schedules,” said Mindy Murdock, park naturalist and nature center manager.

“In addition, we would be competing with all the other more adult-centered festivities.

Shifting the program to the daylight hours allows us to use our educational animals and gives families something to do earlier in the day without having to make changes in their evening plans.”

This is the second year Zion Nature Center will host the program.

“This gives the children a chance to have their own New Year’s Eve celebration so they feel that they are a part of the festivities,” Murdock said. “It also gives mom and dad a chance to celebrate when they know by midnight they’re going to be snoozing on the couch.”

portunity to meet some of the Zion Nature Center’s educational animals up close, as well as a few environmental education activities.

“We will also have our Green New Year’s Resolution wall for families to post their resolution to make 2017 a little greener,” Murdock said. “And then of course there’s the countdown to noon and the balloon drop and an opportunity for families to toast in the Noon Year with each other.”

The event is free but limited to 50 participants. To sign up, email the Zion Nature Center at naturecenter@zionsville-in.gov and include the number of those attending (both parents and kids). Murdock said registration filled up fast last year, and there were about 100 people on a waiting list.

Union students donate pajamas

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Kindergartners at Union Elementary kicked off a month of learning about kindness by collecting pajamas to be giving back donated to The Villages, an organization providing foster care, adoption and family services.

According to the “Kindergarten Jammie Count” as tallied by the students, 271 pajamas were donated by the entire elementary school.

Last year, donations came only from the five kindergarten classes, and they collected fewer than 100 jammies. Kindergarten teacher Brooke Sorgen saw a greater need for The Villages this year, and the kindergarteners rallied the other students to donate.

“Some people don’t have warm pajamas, so we wanted to give them some,” said 6-yearold Nicholas Brady, adding that he donated his stuffed animals to others previously but was much happier to donate pajamas because they hadn’t belonged to him.

“A lot of kids don’t realize the need of others to have a warm and cuddly bed,” kindergarten teacher Emily Cravens said.

“They don’t think of donating something as simple as jammies,” Sorgen said.

thinking of other ways to be kind. A bulletin board suggests ways the students can show kindness such as helping someone at recess who has fallen, reading to a sibling or telling someone they love them.

Cravens said the children incorporated a variety of skills to execute the pajama drive, from writing announcements to drawing advertising posters to sorting the donations by age appropriateness.

With the success of this year’s drive, the teachers anticipate continuing the collection next year.

“It’s really teaching the kids a lot,” Sorgen said.

The Villages is Indiana’s largest nonprofit child and family agency, serving 11,000 children each year.

Revisiting a dark day Commentary by Ward Degler I can’t get through the month of November without revisiting John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the days that plain talk followed.

It was 1963 and I was a junior naval officer in Washington, D.C. Our commander-in-chief was a U.S. Navy hero, so it was a great time and place to wear blue and gold. A lot of us were proud to be navy.

I was in charge of a special photo lab at the Naval Photographic Center, which was used only for White House projects. Even though I never saw the inside of the White House or met the president, I felt connected.

Soon after the news came that the president had been killed, I was ordered to the Pentagon.

There, I called in eight of my best photographers.

We would be photographing the funeral.

Each of us was assigned a spot along Massachusetts Avenue where we were to take pictures — not of the funeral procession — but of the crowd. Every few minutes a guy in a dark suit wearing sunglasses came by and collected our film.

My guess was they were looking for persons of interest. Understandable, since nobody yet had a clear picture of what had happened or why.

Anxiety hung over everything like a dark cloud.

After the funeral procession had passed, we were taken to Arlington National Cemetery to cover the crowd during those ceremonies. My photographers again turned over their film for scrutiny.

When things were finished at the cemetery, I was told to release my crew and go home. I hitched a ride to St. Matthew Catholic Church, where the funeral had been held. As I was waiting for a bus, Jackie Kennedy, Robert and Ted Kennedy all emerged from the church just a few yards from where I stood. I snapped pictures as they walked down the steps and got into a limousine.

Somehow, standing there, I felt as dark and crushed as they did, and a couple weeks later I requested a new assignment. I spent the rest of my time in the navy at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where it was warm and sunny.

But even now when November comes, I remember a cold day when the sun never broke through the clouds.

By Megan Melton • news@currentzionsville.com As a young girl, Anne Simon spent hours drawing in her sketchbook. In her hometown of Cincinnati, she cover story dreamed of becoming a designer. Time would tick away as she worked on one creation after another, sketchbook in tow.

Now, Simon is living her dream. In 2005, she opened Wish Art Glass, a studio and gallery that she operates out of her home in Whitestown’s Eagle’s Nest neighborhood.

But glass hasn’t always been her forte.

Simon first worked with glass in 1996, when she owned a small shop filled with vintage clothing and small art items from local artists.

What her customers requested most were stained glass home décor items, inspired by some beautiful pieces of stained glass jewelry in her store.

“I asked the jewelry artists, but they weren’t interested,” she said. “So I thought, ‘I’ll do it.’”

••• What was one of the biggest mistakes you’ve made that has taught you a valuable lesson and/or made you a better artist?

“I make mistakes on a daily basis. I have learned that this is part of the process.

Take the information learned to make your next piece better.”

••• What is the trickiest part about working with glass?

“Glass can break. It can cut and burn you. Safety measures are very important.

Safety equipment can include gloves, a respirator for fumes or particulate matter and safety glasses. More advanced forms of glass often require more safety equipment.”

••• Any tips/tricks to share?

“I would suggest that anyone starting in glass should read as much as possible about the type of glass that he/she would like to make. For example, if you find that you would like to make fused glass, but realize that you don’t have room for a kiln, stained glass may be a better choice. After reading, if you feel confident, then give it a go. Simon’s work typically features modern lines with elegant flourishes. Most of her pieces are functional, from jewelry to large garden ornaments.

Smile through fear and sadness Commentary by Terry Anker He was among the first African-American men to host a national television program.

His life was cut short among the many to die of lung cancer. He raised a daughter, who, like him, would come to know fame and the many privileges and obligations inure to the designation. Nathaniel Adams Cole lives in the heart and songs of many this season, more than ever. Nat “King” Cole, who likened to the children’s nursery rhyme evoked by his moniker, earned his place as a troubadour for millions. Surely, he suffered immeasurable humiliation as a black man subjugated to the standards of “separate” but equal. There is no place for this identity in passing through this world – or any other.

Yet he, like many others, found his way.

In bringing voice to music provided by the famed Charles Spencer Chaplin for his 1936 film “Modern Times,” Nat was no doubt tipping his hat to the impoverished English lad-made-good, Charlie. While the lyrics and title came later from a duet of songwriters,

John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons to be exact, the sentiment originated from an earlier, more rudimentary and distinctly thoughtful place. Namely, that life is not as we wish it to be – so what do we do about it? Charlie, somewhat cavalier by today’s ethos, suggested — no, asserted — that that we should simply grin and bear it.

To use the much more elegant, even erudite, words of Turner & Parsons, “Smile, what’s the use of crying?” Surely, the admonishment to “hide every trace of sadness” violates some contemporary rule to stew in our supposed transgressions. Is smiling through our “fear and sadness” a talisman to endure a perilous, if not intentionally vindictive, world? Is a smile enough to inoculate against the aspersions and ill-will of the haters in our ranks? Let’s hope so.

I’ve finally gotten my holiday groove on, people! I’m just back from a 6 a.m. run to Meijer, followed by humor an hour at Kohl’s. With the help of Amazon, Ticketmaster and a few swigs of a lovely Merlot, I am feeling quite good about the Christmas season. True, I have not written the annual family missive, nor have I mailed a single card. In fact, I haven’t even ordered the cards, so I may very well be sending glad tidings for the New Year!

I’m not worried. “Better late than never” is our family motto!

Now, if only my husband, Doo, would stop being such a Grinch. I don’t know if it’s Doo or all men, but whenever the stress hits enforce, he cannot seem to pull himself together. He’s been oscillating between “I don’t care if Maddie has dance, we’re going to decorate the front porch NOW” and “I can’t possibly get anything done if you keep nagging me about addressing envelopes.” This is why I’m playing Bing Crosby non-stop around this joint. I need a sultry crooner to keep me from the ledge.

I’m also stuffing my face with bourbon-soaked English fruitcake to keep my retorts in check. I want to tell Doo to quit whining and go to the office if he needs to work. Seriously, anyone here expecting to be left alone in the peace and quiet for seven hours on a Sunday is living in a winter wonderland. This place is the Island of Misfits Toys, my friends. We have cats vomiting on rugs, kids freaking out over exams, cars breaking down, and little to no chance of avoiding illness in the next few days. Plus, I teach through Dec. 22. Momma ain’t gonna be around to ensure everyone stays on Santa’s nice list. Let the reindeer games commence!

My point is, I need Doo to get on board my “Polar Express,” for him to take a moment to enjoy this crazy season, and more importantly, to revel in my spectacular purchasing prowess. Also, we should probably get on the card thing.

Trauma dolls provide hope, help for kids

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Most Monday mornings at Hoosier Village, a senior living community in Zionsville, there is an assembly line of activgiving back ity for a good cause.

A group of 15 female residents get together for 90 minutes to produce small trauma dolls, which are used by hospital nurses to discern how young patients are feeling.

“These are dolls we make from scratch,” resident Ginger Swenson said. “We buy the fabric. We buy the stuffing. We sew around them and create these dolls. We put faces on them. Then we ship them to children’s hospitals around the world.”

Swenson’s husband, Houston, is a member of the Carmel Golden K Kiwanis Club. So was Fred Koberna, who died in November. Fred and his wife, Arlene, were handling distribution of the trauma doll inventory.

“The joy from our retirement home is that we can do things for someone else, because so often people are doing things for us,” said Swenson, a former Carmel resident who has lived in Hoosier Village for six years. “So it’s really a joy.”

“I usually do the sewing,” Swenson said.

The group has been making the trauma dolls, which now total approximately 3,200, since July 2013.

“When we’re done, they are distributed to local hospitals like Peyton Manning and Riley, and some are sent to Mexico and other places as well,” Swenson said.

Swenson said this is a national project of the Kiwanis Club. Some of the hospitals prefer to receive the dolls without faces, and the children are then allowed to do the painting themselves. Children can express their fear or unhappiness by drawing on the doll. Because the doll is soft and squeezable, it can be used for comfort when the child is anxious.

Christmas album sales to benefit Haiti

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Jim Geiman had a fundraising idea to raise money for a church music ministry by producing a Christmas album.

However, when Hurricane Matthew giving back slammed Haiti in October, he decided to devote the proceeds to the storm victims.

“Once we saw that, it was a no-brainer. They were devastated,” Geiman said.

Geiman runs the Glass Eye Group, a video production service operated out of Kingston’s Music Showcase, 340 Ridgepoint Dr., Carmel.

Kingston’s allowed Geiman to use the space and equipment to make the CD, called “Christmas from the Heart.”

“We were first going to give a couple of bucks for each CD sold,” Geiman said. “When we found out how bad it was, we decided we would give it all. They lost everything. They lost all their livestock and all their crops.”

Geiman approached vocalist Rick Bzdok, St. Bernard’s music coordinator, about the album and he readily agreed to help. Several other area musicians, including Tim Wright, Devon Ashely, Austin Johnson, Anne Wolfley and Roderick Johnson, donated their talents to the album.

“You go through life and you’ve got to do something to pay back,” Geiman said. “You get a CD that sounds good, and you get to help somebody. It’s a win-win for everybody.”

Geiman said he is hoping to raise $5,000 through album sales.

Geiman said he welcomes other store owners wanting to see it in their stores.

‘Christmas Carol’ now on stage

Since 1990, Janet Allen has stood by as a parade of talented directors came to the Indiana Repertory Theater performance to lead the way on one of her favorite stage productions, “A Christmas Carol.” Not this time.

“What always fills my heart with joy in watching ‘A Christmas Carol’ are the hidden, surprising moments of generosity from characters from whom we least expect it,” Allen said. “Often, these characters have very little in the way of material possessions or wealth.

What they have instead is a sense of the promise of humanity and the joy of reaching out to others.”

The Impalas to perform at party

“It’s all talented people that event get along and enjoy each other’s company,” singer Michael Wiltrout said of the 10-piece event band. “If you play with people whose company you enjoy, that not only makes it more fun for you, but that energy comes across to the people in the crowd.”

The Impalas will be featured performers at the New Year’s Eve party at 9 p.m. at the Palladium in Carmel.

“We do some contemporary stuff and even some Big Band numbers, but our strength is soul music from the ’60s and ‘70s from Stax Records and Motown,” Wiltrout said.

Wiltrout, a 48-year-old Indianapolis resident, started the Impalas with his best friend Adam White in 2001. White, a drummer who lives in St. Louis now because of his wife’s career, helps promote The Impalas.

Wiltrout, a North Central High School graduate, took 12 years to get his undergraduate degree at Indiana University. He had a good reason because he was a professional musi-

Although it’s not his full-time job, Wiltrout loves keeping his hand in music.

“I wouldn’t want a life without it. By the same token I would never solely depend on it for a living again because that’s when it breaks your heart,” Wiltrout said.

Low-carb Pumpkin Pecan Cheesecake Content courtesy of Family Features and Atkins.com Servings: 4 Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 50 minutes Ingredients: • 2/3 cup halved pecan nuts • 2/3 cup sucralose-based sweetener (sugar substitute), plus 1 tablespoon • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 3/4 tablespoon unsalted butter stick • 1/2 large egg white • 9 2/3 ounces cream cheese • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream • 6 ounces canned pumpkin, without salt • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice • 1 1/4 large eggs To make crust: Heat oven to 350F. In food processor, combine pecans, 1 tablespoon sugar substitute and cinnamon. Process until finely ground. Toss with butter and egg white; press onto bottom of 9-inch springform pan, rounding up to cover pan seam. Bake until

golden and set, eight to 10 minutes. Cool completely on wire rack.

To make filling: Reduce oven heat to 325F. In large bowl, combine cream cheese, 2/3 cup sugar substitute and cream. With electric mixer at medium speed, beat until smooth.

Add pumpkin puree, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice, mixing to combine. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until just combined. Pour batter over crust. Bake until just set, 45-50 minutes. Turn off oven and let stand 10 minutes; transfer to wire rack and cool completely. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, four hours or overnight.

Slice and serve.

The goal for this house was to make the most of the space available .

1. The second bedroom was the first priority.

A small closet was removed to relocate the hallway and another larger, more functional closet was added with previous hallway space.

2. New enlarged dormer: A new hall bath was created by expanding the existing dormer.

The addition of another full bath adds to the function and value of the home.

3. The existing bathroom was remodeled and transformed into a true master bath and is now accessible from the master bedroom through a sliding barn door. These clients really wanted to make the most of their space while still keeping with the original style of their 1920s home 4. The relocation of the hallway gave the upper level a more open and naturally lit layout.

Before Background Info: The owners of this 1920s Meridian Kessler home in Indianapolis needed some extra space for their growing family. They loved their home and their neighborhood, but needed an update to fit the needs of their family.

Before problems: These clients needed an update to the layout of their upper level. The house had unused attic space and the hall bath placement meant looking down the hallway at the commode. They needed another bathroom on the upper level and a dedicated bath for the master suite.

Michelangelo and his ‘Pieta’ Commentary by Don Knebel Michelangelo’s “Pieta” is the most famous work of art in Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica. According to its creator, the mastravel terpiece discloses an anti-aging secret.

In 1496, Michelangelo, already well-known at age 21, went to Rome to continue the work as a sculptor he started in Florence. A year later, French Cardinal Jean de Billheres commissioned Michelangelo to create a monument for his funeral, showing Mary holding the body of Jesus. Two years later, Michelangelo unveiled his “Pieta,” meaning “pity.” The work, carved from a 6-foot-high block of Carrara marble, was initially placed in the Chapel of Santa Petronilla, a mausoleum in St. Peter’s that Cardinal de Billheres selected for his interment.

When Michelangelo overheard admirers attributing his work to another sculptor, he entered the chapel at night and carved his name in the diagonal ribbon on Mary’s dress, the only time he ever signed his work. The “Pieta” cemented Michelangelo’s reputation for genius.

In 1749, the “Pieta” was moved to the Cru-

cifixion Chapel, on the right just after the entrance to St. Peter’s, where it has remained except when it was in New York during the 1964 World’s Fair. In 1972, a mentally ill man attacked the “Pieta” with a hammer, breaking off Mary’s left arm and her nose. Even though people witnessing the attack walked off with souvenir pieces, including the nose, the “Pieta” was meticulously restored. Today, bullet-proof glass stands between the work and its millions of admirers. Because the overall design is so natural, most observers overlook the fact that the lower half of Mary’s body is out of proportion, allowing her to hold Jesus’s body unawkwardly in her lap.

Early critics said Mary’s face was too young-looking for the mother of the 33-yearold Jesus. Michelangelo said they were ignoring the rejuvenating properties of perpetual virginity. Who knew?
