ZIONSVILLE/ WHITESTOWN MetroNet is working CONSTRUCTION in areas around Zionsville, installing fiber optic cables. The crews should cause little traffic disruption. Residents will see a series of messages before construction activity begins in their neighborhood, including a letter, postcard and yard marker. Next, they will see crews identifying underground utilities and marking their locations with temporary paint. Then, MetroNet teams will build the network.

Contractors began work Dec. 17 on 1st Street from Oak Street to Ash Street. The contractor will close off 100-200 feet at a time, starting with the intersection of 1st Street and Oak Street. They will work their way north to Ash Street. One lane will remain open with traffic control directing cars. The road will be opened back up when they are finished.

CARMEL Range Line Road is closed to southbound traffic between Eighth Street to just south of Clay Terrace for installation of a stormwater collection system and pedestrian connectivity. The northbound lane is open.

The project is expected to reopen to twoway traffic by the end of the year.

Lane restrictions are under way near Keystone Parkway and 96th Street, where a new roundabout interchange will be built. Construction is expected to last through 2019.

West 96th Street is closed west of Ditch Road for a stormwater culvert project. This project will last through the end of the year WESTFIELD The City of Westfield recently announced a Winter Weather Awareness Campaign.

Three box culverts will be replaced and new ditches will be cut to facilitate better roadside drainage on Towne Road. Lanes also will be widened. Towne Road is now open from 156th Street to 166th Street, but drivers should expect minor delays.

Lane and ramp closures soon will occur on U.S. 31 near 146th Street. Closures will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., but dates have not been announced.

As part of a federally funded project to improve safety, lighting will be added to 20 intersections throughout the city. The project will be complete in February, and so far, no road closures have been announced.

Richey, Longest retire from school board

During its Dec. 10 meeting, the Zionsville school board celebrated the retirement of longtime members Shari SCHOOLS Richey and Jim Longest. It was their last meeting.

Richey was elected in 2010 but began her work with the board three years prior when she led the superintendent’s Cost-Cutting Advisory Committee. Board President Jane Burgess said Richey applied her professional experience as a CPA to manage the community. “(Richey) has been a tireless advocate for ZCS and has assisted mightily in helping ensure tax neutrality,” Burgess said.

Longest served ZCS for 12 years. Burgess said he brought engineering skills and datadriven leadership to his role and was connected to Zionsville and Whitestown .

“He’s just been a great person to work with during my board career,” she said.

Both members received a plaque recognizing their dedication and impact. Longest was not in attendance due to family commitments.

presented the 2017-18 Teacher Evaluation Outcomes report. ZCS received an A rating from the state. The district had 30.2 percent of teachers rated as effective and 69.5 percent of teachers rated as highly effective, with only 0. 3 percent needing improvement.

• The board authorized the approval of bids for the demolition of the old Union Elementary and the construction of the Employee and Student Services Center.

August 2019 is the projected completion date for both projects.

• Supt. Scott Robison presented results from the community survey regarding school calendars for 2020-23, which received nearly 5,000 responses from ZCS employees, parents and students.

Calendar B received 41.4 percent of the vote, with Calendar A following closely with 39.6 percent. Both calendars are similar to this year’s with a start date prior to Labor Day and an end date prior to Memorial Day, but Calendar B includes one week off of school in February. Robison said the open week allows for travel abroad, educational camps or activities, internships and more. The board approved Calendar B.

The League of American Bicyclists, a national nonprofit that promotes cycling education, awarded Zionsville with a bronze level Bicycle Friendly CommuFITNESS nity Award Dec. 6.

The bronze level indicates that Zionsville is committed to improving cycling conditions by investing in amenities like cycling education programs, pro-cycling policies and infrastructure.

The application for the award was largely prepared by the town council-appointed Zionsville Pathways Advisory Committee, which is made up of local volunteers.

Jeff Edmondson, who served as coordinator for preparation of the application, said many Zionsville departments assisted in the process, including the planning, streets and stormwater, police, fire and parks and recreation departments.

“Designations like these come from years of hard work and result in making this community an even better place to live and

work,” Parks Supt. Matt Dickey said in a press release.

The award comes in the midst of several current and planned cycling-related projects taking place in Zionsville.

“Our community has engaged in some significant public processes to enhance and expand our trails and pathways network in the past few years,” Edmondson said. “Bicycle accommodations were included in the rebuild of the intersection at Zionsville Road and 96th Street and are included in the Zionsville Road improvement next year. In addition, a mountain-bike trail is included in plans for a new park in the next few years.”

Because of the healthy, eco-friendly nature of cycling, it has become a popular activity across the nation in recent years.

With the inclusion of new bike lanes and trails, the number of active cyclists in Zionsville is expected to grow.

“I, personally, ride a bike throughout our community and the surrounding area, but not nearly as much as the hundreds of avid bicyclists in our community,” Edmundson said.

Zionsville Presbyterian Church, with volunteers from St. Mary and St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church and Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis, along with others in the community, recently completed a food drive to provide meals to schoolchildren during the holiday season. Shepherd Community Center on the near-east side of Indianapolis will be distributing the meals. In the neighborhoods around Shepherd, as many as eight out of 10 children rely on school meals for adequate nutrition.

When school is not in session, meals may not be a sure thing for some children.

About 221 ZPC congregation members each took a large box, or tote, home and filled it with food for two weeks. Some members purchased food items in bulk. When the boxes were filled, volunteers emptied them in one large room at ZPC. Multi-serving boxes were broken down into individual servings. The boxes were then refilled so that each child would have a variety of food.

St. Mary and St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church sent some seventh- and eighth-grade members to help with the boxing process. The students, working alongside ZPC members and others from the community, emptied and refilled the boxes, making sure each Shepherd Community student would have a mixture of nutritious staples and a few treats as well. The goal was to blend the types of foods so that the meals would be more enjoyable.

The totes were then loaded in a truck and delivered to Shepherd Community Center, where the staff and volunteers will make sure that the families most in need get the food during the Christmas holiday.

David Weekley Homes gives back — David Weekley Homes recently held its fourth annual Giving Thanks, Giving Back Thanksgiving Drive. The drive was from Nov. 1 to 15, and David Weekley Homes collected more than 184,000 pounds of turkey and nonperishable items in 18 participating markets.

Pastor takes renewal leave with Lilly Endowment Grant

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church has been awarded a $50,000 grant for the 2018 Lilly Endowment SABBATICAL Clergy Renewal Program for Indiana Congregations. The grant will allow Senior Pastor and Rector Rev. C. Davies Reed to participate in a 3 1/2-month “renewal leave.”

“Rejuvenation is the purpose of the renewal leave. There is an interesting juxtaposition of preparing for a leave and taking a leave,” Reed said. “Once you have all the details settled, then you can begin to breathe deeply and relax. That breath, which in Hebrew is called ruach, is the breath of the Spirit. Breathing in that breath of the Spirit for a few months will fill you again with joy and wonder in all things and the desire to pick up one’s call with a renewed sense of call and dedication.”

Reed said, like many others, he’s in a profession which demands availability to respond to those in his charge 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This call is extraordinarily rewarding and humbling because we’re invited into some of life’s most intimate moments from birth to death. With no breaks and over some number of years, this can take a toll on one’s energy and enthusiasm for ministry,” he said. “Because of this, it’s appropriate

that clergy have a time to step away from the day-to-day operations of a congregation to recharge.”

Reed’s sabbatical will be a series of pilgrimages framed by four distinct periods.

The first period will be to dramatically change the rhythm of his day, which he plans to do by changing time zones and spending three weeks in China, where he will visit at least nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites (landmarks or areas selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance).

The second portion will be spent visiting the Iona Community in Scotland. The third phase involves continuing to explore UNESCO World Heritage sites in Scotland.

“Finally, as we begin to make the transition back to the United States, we will spend a few weeks on vacation with our grandchildren and their parents. This is an annual treat, and this year we will have some great stories to tell,” Reed said. “I can only begin to imagine how all of that will positively impact my relationship with my congregation at St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church.”

During Reed’s time away, members of the St. Francis congregation will take their own pilgrimages to faith heritage sites around Indiana, including the Roofless Church in New Harmony.

The Duke Energy Foundation granted the Zion Nature Center $4,887 in May to support hands-on, sciZION NATURE CENTER ence-focused initiatives, which led to the creation of the Traveling Teacher Trunks project.

Trunks are available for a $10 rental fee.

They contain natural artifacts, materials and resources that allow area teachers to expand their school’s science curriculum.

According to Zionsville Parks and Recreation Park Naturalist and Zion Nature Center Manager Mindy Murdock, the project came about as part of the update to school program curriculum for preschool through eighth grade. The Zion Nature Center wanted to align with the updated curriculum and the new Indiana Science Standards.

“I’ve been brainstorming ways the Zion Nature Center can reach out to the larger Boone County community,” Murdock said. “Currently, the center is the only environmental education facility located in Boone County.”

Because of funding and time constraints, Murdock is not able to travel to schools and

other educational centers outside of Zionsville’s municipal boundaries. Additionally, she found that many of the surrounding school systems have limited resources for transportation.

“The Zion Nature Center is currently located on Eagle Elementary School grounds in a small house,” Murdock said. “The size and location of the current center poses its own challenges for providing programs to larger groups.”

The Traveling Teacher Trunks help solve those problems.

“These trunks can travel around Boone County and to the surrounding communities, and space isn’t an issue as we’ve adapted all activities to be able to accommodate up to 30 students,” Murdock said.

The Zionsville Parks and Recreation Dept. is continually looking for ways to improve the community.

“Our parks board just completed their five-year master plan that includes a new nature center,” Murdock said. “That facility, which is in the design phase, will help alleviate the problem of space and accessibility for all in our community. The plan also includes working to complete the Big-4 Rail Trail through Zionsville.”

Observing the Galapagos ecology

Time to get a handle on trash

My wife and I recently enjoyed a National Geographic expedition of the Galapagos Islands, located 600 miles west of Ecuador.

These islands became faTRAVEL mous after Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution. He observed that Galapagos finches and giant tortoises had developed unique adaptations to their habitats. His conclusions were in direct conflict with the creation beliefs of the day, so he was hesitant to release them. He finally published his theory 24 years later.

The diverse and pristine islands are carefully protected by the Ecuadorian government. Access is strictly regulated.

As part of these restrictions, our ship was required to maintain a ratio of one naturalist for every 16 guests.

These guides not only taught us about the unique species but made sure we observed the boundaries for protecting the environment and wildlife. We were able to closely observe giant tortoises, large marine and land iguanas, blue- and red-footed boobies, Darwin finches, short-eared day owls, sea lions and more.

We are drowning in a sea of trash. Our nation creates 250 million tons of refuse every year. Most of it goes into landfills, which are getting bigger PLAIN TALK every day.

According to a report by the Solid Waste Environmental Excellence Protocol, America may be headed toward a trash reckoning. The organization estimates that U.S. landfills will be completely full by 2029.

Recycling can do only so much and I read recently that plastic bags shouldn’t be recycled at all. Late afternoon on Christmas Day tons of plastic packaging will find its way into our nation’s trash bins.

Recycling helps, especially with glass bottles and aluminum cans. There are machines that count your beer and soda cans and give you money in return.

In some states you pay a deposit on both cans and bottles and get your money back when you return them. This is not a new concept, of course. As a kid I often walked along the country road picking up discarded bottles for pocket money.

We toured the Charles Darwin Research Center to learn how the breeding program is saving a species of giant tortoise that came perilously close to extinction.

The naturalists, National Geographic photographers and guest speakers contributed to our knowledge and enjoyment by conducting fun and informative sessions each evening.

We left the islands with a fresh appreciation of how it is possible to preserve a unique ecological area when government and scientists work together.

ever. California recently arrested three people who tried to smuggle 27,000 aluminum cans in from Arizona. The haul was worth $41,000 in refunds. Turns out the smugglers had already bilked the state out of $16.1 million during a three-year period.

That’s a lot of cans.

Another enterprising gang wasn’t so lucky in Michigan. That state has a 10-cent deposit on aluminum cans, and these geniuses thought they could cash in by bringing a dump truck loaded with cans from out of state for refunds.

It never dawned on them that refundable cans in Michigan are stamped with ID numbers.

The solution to the trash problem won‘t be easy. We can ask for paper bags at the grocery store. Some stores have already stopped using plastic bags. We can keep cloth bags in our cars. That’s an even better idea, and most grocery stores sell them.

HOAs provide necessary structure but have limited power

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com If you live in a neighborhood in Zionsville, you likely pay dues to a homeowners association.

COVER STORY The Community Associations Institute estimates there are 4,800 community associations in Indiana and as many as 347,000 in the U.S., 55 percent of which are HOAs. The rules, amenities and fees associated with HOAs differ for each. If your neighborhood has a pool, for instance, the cost may be higher. Some neighborhoods have many acres of common space, maintained by the HOA, while others have very little common space.

History of HOAs

During the Industrial Revolution of the early 19th century, “railroad communities,” or neighborhoods built near railroads, were created. More communities appeared in the 20th century as the development of the car allowed people to live further away from cities.

Many of the neighborhoods did not have formal rules and regulations, but residents often agreed on how the neighborhood should look. In the 1960s, the Federal Housing Authority and the Urban Land Institute encouraged more residential developments and helped create HOAs. Today, HOAs are formed when developers purchase land, divide it into parcels and then create covenants, conditions and restrictions, or “CC&Rs,” to govern the neighborhood, in addition to any town or city ordinances. The HOA is governed by a board of directors elected by the members and a set of rules called bylaws. In recent years, HOAs have started hiring third-party management services to handle daily operations.

Taking care of business

The Town of Zionsville has record of at least 45 HOAs. In Royal Run, a Zionsville neighborhood near I-65 and Whitestown Parkway, the HOA was established more than 20 years ago and is now managed in part by Community Association Services of Indiana.

A key benefit to living in a neighborhood governed by an HOA is having well-maintained common space. Royal Run has more than 70 acres of common space, including nine ponds, one pool and a clubhouse, all maintained by its HOA. “The HOA is very mission-minded on keeping our cost as low as possible. A lot of the dues go to land upkeep,” McDonald said.

The Eagles Nest neighborhood, located in Whitestown but with Zionsville addresses and schools, has a similar annual fee and amenities. Beth Kerkhoff, a resident of Eagles Nest, said its HOA board is highly communicative with residents.

“The HOA in Eagles Nest seems very willing to discuss issues people bring up,” Kerkhoff said.

McDonald said open communication also is important to the Royal Run board.

“Communication is a big thing,” McDonald said. “Getting the word out quickly and trusting people to read mail can be difficult at times. We promote our Facebook group to get people talking and to be aware of neighborhood issues.”

Royal Run

Many HOAs are charged with making sure residents follow neighborhood covenants.

But state laws also are in place to govern the HOAs. Royal Run resident Clint Harris moved to the neighborhood in early 2003 and said there was low interference from the HOA until 2015. The HOA board announced in January 2015 it would issue citations for covenant violations starting that June.

“Letters sent to residents said the colors of their homes or garage doors were not approved,” Harris said.

According to Harris, the neighborhood attempted to fine some residents for each letter sent about covenant violations.

Coincidentally, House Enrolled Act 1286 was signed into law in May 2015 by then-Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, which restricts fines from community associations imposed on residents. It also states HOAs are required to disclose all communications relating to financial transactions of the association for at least two years and must be able to disclose any communication about a homeowner’s property requested by the homeowner.

“The original covenants of the neighborhood were written, including a clause on fines being an option to assess upon a home that was in continual non-compliance with standards,” McDonald said. “HEA 1286 states that this is no longer a legal course of action, therefore the HOA will not act upon it.”

Attorney Edward Woolard said there are more checks and balances on HOAs than some homeowners know about, to keep them from doing things like selectively enforcing rules. The power of an HOA comes down to its covenants and bylaws, but state law takes precedence.

“If you live in the housing addition, you are entitled to all the minutes and documents,” Woolard said.

McDonald aims to minimize the negative connotations of HOAs and said communication is key.

“I like the idea of trying to modernize the thought on HOAs as a group of people who are working together to make things better for everybody,” McDonald said. “I see it as a challenge to use it in a positive way for people.”

Commentary by Terry Anker With the end of another excessive meal, we retired to the hotel’s quiet lobby bar to relax with a nightcap before ending the day.

This having been our evening ritual for the several evenings of our visit, the amiable server knew well our preferred libation and even our names. But on this, our last night in town, we asked the young man to tell us a bit about himself. Surprised by our genuine interest, he responded in earnest, “I miss my family.” It seems that this kid was reared in the northern-most part of India while his interest in finding decent work brought him here, to the tip of the subcontinent of India.

He wasn’t complaining, really.

He worked long hours, but the job was pleasant enough and the firm, an international hospitality group, compensated him far above the local level for his academic achievement. As the more cheerful countenance we’d come to know returned to his face, he shared that his employer is still hoping to expand in a way that would take him back north. While they’d been discussing it since his start more than five years earlier, he believed that this would be the year. Home was five hours by airplane, but such transport is financially out-of-reach.

A train, in coach, is 40 hours and affordable – if all goes well – but he hasn’t been able to get the time from work to make the roundtrip.

A few days later, while sitting in an airport lounge awaiting our own connection home, we lamented the inconvenience of it all. Why couldn’t we get a direct flight? Why is airplane food so terrible? Why couldn’t we just be home already? With wealth (and power), we come to believe that the world should treat us differently. Don’t we forget too quickly that it already does?

Planning for spontaneity Commentary by Danielle Wilson I am not a spontaneous person. I’m a planner, a list-maker, a masterful orchestrator of to-do lists. So, when a HUMOR friend texted that he had tickets to the IU-Louisville game, I politely but immediately turned him down.

I had a mountain of tasks on my Saturday plate and I couldn’t possibly take four to six hours to attend a sporting event that could be playing on the TV while I graded papers/ put up a Christmas tree/started holiday shopping/cleaned the house/did laundry/ dominated in six games of Words.

I am also a penny-pincher who can’t pass up a good deal and am married to Mr. Impulsive, so when the next two lines of text came through – Free! and Parking pass! – Doo was easily able to convince me to smash that chore plate against our stillunstockinged hearth. Road trip!

Eight hours of fun later, we returned, with me in a snit. I was exhausted, my team

had lost (go Cards!) and, most concerning, very few things were crossed off that list.

Before I gave Doo reason to call a marriage counselor, I went straight to bed. My anxiety levels had beautifully crafted “It’s your fault” comments brewing way too close to the surface.

Feeling more positive the next morning, I decided to take my own advice. Students could wait on their essays, the floors could remain covered in a snow-ice-salt layer of filth, and the 12-foot mother of a Frasier fir could be erected later.

Life happens when it happens, and I don’t want to miss it because of a stupid, irrational idea that I can control the universe.

Note to self: Add “Be Spontaneous” to list.

No wonder the Statue of Liberty can’t hold her head high.

During 2018, I had my share of experiences — both good and bad — that led to this year’s 50-plus columns. Some HUMOR thanks are in order: Thanks to my surgeon, who taught me how to do Kegels. Good manners prevent me from explaining exactly what this involves (guys, ask your wives), but Mary Ellen called me the King of Kegels because I exceeded the required number of repetitions each day. “I do feel like The King,” I said as I headed off to work, “and right now my Pelvis is leaving the building.”

Thanks to Mary Ellen for pointing out to me that the flies I kept swatting at were actually an eye disorder called floaters. One website recommended a dietary fix — the consumption of large amounts of citrus fruit like lemons, limes and oranges. I tried that for almost two weeks. The bad news is: It didn’t get rid of my floaters. The good news is: I had no signs of scurvy.

Thanks to our real estate broker, Brad, who made a few suggestions on how to improve the appeal of the home we were selling after 30 years. He gazed out the bay

window toward the wooded area and noticed a family of deer grazing. Brad snapped a picture, knowing this would be a great selling point for wildlife lovers. Mary Ellen grinned as Brad commented about the idyllic scene. Could my wife possibly have arranged that? I knew she was good, but who knew she was that good?

Thanks to the people at Amazon for making a gizmo called Echo. You can ask it important questions like: What time is it? How many days are there in January? Who won the popular vote in 2016 (I just like to hear the answer)? To interact with the gadget, you must address it by her exact name: “Alexa, will it rain today?” A few times, by mistake, I called her Alexi. She paid no attention to me and ignored all my questions.

Twitter bots played role in 2016 election — An analysis of information shared on Twitter during the 2016 U.S. presidential election has found that automated accounts — or “bots” — played a disproportionate role in spreading misinformation online. The study, conducted by Indiana University researchers and recently published in the journal Nature Communications, analyzed 14 million messages and 400,000 articles shared on Twitter between May 2016 and March 2017. A mere 6 percent of Twitter accounts that the study identified as bots spread 31 percent of the “low-credibility” information. The study also found that bots played a major role promoting low-credibility content in the first few moments before a story goes viral.

Volunteers, including members of Zionsville Lions Club and the Zionsville Alpha Leo Club, gathered Dec. 8 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis to bag ice-melting salt. ER physician Dr. Marcus Hendry was in charge of St. Vincent Hospital’s “Be An Ice-Breaker” project, which provides free ice-melting salt to the public. Volunteers, including members of the Zionsville Lions Club and the Zionsville Alpha Leo Club, gathered in the emergency parking garage of St. Vincent Hospital on 86th Street in Indianapolis. To aid in bagging the salt, volunteers formed an assembly line. Each bagger had someone seal their bags. Other volunteers loaded pickup trucks to take the salt up the ER walkway.

Members of the public can pick up bags for free. Palladium’s New Year’s Eve Extravaganza includes Martinie’s Boogie Trio

He’ll share that love with New Year’s Eve partygoers at the CELEBRATION Palladium.

“Folks hanging out with us will be bopping along with the high-energy dance music of the 1950s,” Martinie Eiler said of his band, Martinie’s Boogie Trio. “We do originals as well, but we love doing our own takes on the acoustic roots of rock and roll and soul music. We do a lot of early rhythm and blues. We do jump blues from people like Louis Jordan. We do music from soul folks like Ray Charles. We do a lot of great rock and rollers like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and anything that’s got a piano and makes people jump up and down, we take a stab at. That’s kind of our mojo.”

The New Year’s Eve Extravaganza begins at 9 p.m., and lasts until 1 a.m.

Martinie’s Boogie Three will appear in the Founders Room. Living Proof will perform on the Palladium stage.

Other entertainment includes Scott Routenberg Jazz Trio, Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge; DJ Futon John, Robert Adam Room; and A Touch of Grass, South Lobby.

“It sounds like a super-fun party and we’re glad to be a part of it,” Martinie Eiler said.

Piano player Martinie Eiler and his fellow bandmates, Joe Donnelly, saxophone, and John Valdez, drums, have been playing together for three years.

“We enjoy spending time together,” Martinie Eiler said. “It’s been a wonderful experience in that way.”

The band released its first album in August.

“We played a Peanut Butter and Jam program for kids at the Palladium and I think people thought what is good for the kids is good for the grown-ups,” Martinie Eiler said. “We’re delighted to come up to Hamilton County. We mostly stay in southern Indiana, Bloomington or Brown

On average, Martinie Eiler said the trio plays twice a month.

“Just enough to keep our chops up and keep it rolling,” he said.

Top cover band Living Proof has a reputation of being one of the top cover bands in central Indiana. Julianne Hess is one of Living Proof’s eight band members. The band has a horn section and six lead vocalists.

“We have played every New Year’s Eve for more than 15 years, including events such as NYE weddings to downtown Indy countdowns,” Hess said. “We look forward to playing at the Palladium, the most breathtaking venue in central Indiana.”

Hess, who lives in Pendleton, said the members all live in central Indiana.

“We play a variety of dance music, covering hits from yesterday and today,” Hess said. “Some of our greatest musical influences are Earth, Wind & Fire, Justin Timberlake, The Jackson 5 and Bruno Mars.

We always provide a non-stop party experience to keep guests dancing all night long.”

Living Proof formed in 2002. Hess said it has grown in popularity every year since.

“Although most members have changed since the band first began, the spirit of the group remains unchanged with the same musical influences and collective vision to provide a positive musical experience for audiences of all ages,” Hess said.

“With so many vocalists on stage, it allows us to sing a wide variety of music that plays to each of our vocal strengths. We also have some of the tightest harmony and group vocal arrangements around.”

Sadie Hunter Current in Noblesville editor I’m sharing this recipe knowing full well that the cooking bug must have died with my grandmothers. In fact, the recipes my family members have enjoyed most through the years aren’t written on a recipe card anywhere, they’re just made from memory and only a few have survived.

I’m no cook. I have one cookbook – Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol. 1.” I got it at a garage sale for $2, and it has never been opened. So, when I knew each of the editors of Current were to submit a family recipe, I went scrambling to my mother.

This is one my mom was given by my second-grade, and arguably favorite, teacher, Karen Thomas. At my family’s holiday gettogethers, there often isn’t a traditional, sitdown meal. Especially at Christmas, everyone just brings an appetizer or dessert, and we pop in and out of the kitchen between board games and presents. I do not recommend for those with blood glucose issues because every single ingredient has sugar.

Karen Thomas’ Slush Punch Ingredients: • 2 cups sugar • 1 can pineapple juice • 2 small packs of gelatin (apricot, peach or lime is recommended, but you can use any flavor. Mrs. Thomas’ type-written recipe says not to mix flavors) • 2 bottles of ginger ale (quart or liter size) Directions: Dissolve sugar and gelatin in hot water until everything is dissolved.

Put the mixture in a plastic container and freeze. Remove from the freezer 4-5 hours before serving, breaking the ice block into “slush” consistency. Add the two bottles of ginger ale. Stir and serve.

I look forward to enjoying the perfect pairing of creamy peanut butter and chilled chocolate almost as much as spending time together as a family opening gifts Christmas morning. Also a family tradition: My mom hiding or disguising the buckeyes so that my dad won’t get into them before Dec. 25.

Buckeyes Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups peanut butter • 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar • 1 tablespoon butter, softened • 1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips Directions: Mix peanut butter, confectioners sugar and butter. Let chill in refrigerator, then form into 1-inch balls. Melt chocolate chips in microwave or double boiler. Dip peanut butter balls in the chocolate, remove with a toothpick and place on foil to cool.

They can be placed in the refrigerator or freezer to speed up the process.

Gift bottles for red drinkers Commentary by Elizabeth Morse December brings with it a host of special holiday events. From neighborhood open houses and office parWINEderlust ties to New Year’s Eve, it’s best to have a little something in-hand for your host. The three red wines I’m recommending are all bottles I’d be happy to receive. Starting at well under $20, there is an appropriate selection for any occasion.

A fun little Italian wine, Olianas 2017 Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, comes in at $13ish and isn’t one you’ll find everywhere. I always enjoy a wine that’s a bit obscure because it implies that the giver has put a bit more effort into selecting it. This one isn’t going to be in the 15-case display inside your wine shop. It will impress with rich, bold flavors like chocolate, fragrant tobacco and hints of myrtle berries (menthol). A big mouthful of silky red wine.

For a fancy affair, seek out 2015 Franky Family Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With 86 percent Cab juice and

about 10 percent Merlot, this beauty smells like black currants and strong coffee. It’s got a solid tannic structure but the tannins themselves are subtle and feminine. In the mouth, you’ll get flavors of bramble fruit, ripe black cherries and cocoa with a gorgeous spicy finish that won’t quit ($55).

My most recent wine crush (pardon the pun) is another California wine from St. Helena in Napa Valley. 2015 Ehlers Estate Cabernet Franc makes a statement. What it says is, “I’m a very structured and concentrated wine, with firm tannins.” Each sip grips you with dark berries, tarragon, chervil and scads of chocolate and leather.

This lovely is a big mouthful that stands up nicely to heavier holiday fare ($65). Worth. Every. Penny.

THE PECAN CHALLAH HOLLY JOLLY MERRY KRINGLE JINGLE WREATH Challah bread begins by starting in your bread maker or stand mixer the following Dough ingredients: • 1 1/3 cups warm water with 1 tablespoon yeast • 3 eggs, room temperature • 6 tablespoons sugar • 3 tablespoons canola oil • 1 teaspoon salt • 5 to 5 1/2 cups all purpose flour Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Start bread machine for the first-rise-only function and mix a few times with spatula to combine thoroughly during the first 10-minute mixing process by your machine (if using a stand mixer, bring together the dough slowly with your mixer’s dough hook with the above ingredients until a ball forms). Make sure your dough ball is not sticky to the touch. If it is, add a teaspoon of flour at a time until it is not sticky. For the bread machine, let it rise inside until doubled. For the stand mixer, leave the dough ball in the bowl and cover with plastic wrap and move to a warm area to rise for two hours, or until doubled in size.

Filling ingredients: • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed • 1 cup of toasted pecans • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 8 tablespoons of room temperature butter (1 stick of happiness) • Chop the pecans up finely your cutting board. In a mixing bowl add pecans, cinnamon, sugar and salt. Stir together until blended.

When the dough has risen, lay it on a lightly floured pastry mat. Roll out thin in a rectangle shape, about a half-inch thick, approximately 8 by 12 inches. Spread butter on the surface of the dough with

a spoon. Spread filling evenly on the surface. Next, working horizontally, roll the dough into a log with the seam down.

Place the rolled log onto a backing sheet lined with parchment paper. To make your wreath, you can slice into the dough, three-quarters of the way through seven times, and then splay the dough pieces and bring the two ends together into an oval. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise again until doubled. When doubled, remove plastic wrap and place in oven for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool for 20 minutes before adding the Merry Kringle Jingle Frosting on top.

Merry Kringle Jingle Frosting • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature • 8 tablespoons softened butter • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 3 to 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar In a stand mixer, or with a hand beater, combine cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Slowly add sugar, cinnamon, salt and vanilla. Dress your wreath with slathers of frosting and top with your choice of decorative sugars. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah from our family to yours.

Blueprint for Improvement: Basement finish in west Carmel Commentary by Larry Greene

Before

Background Info: This home, built in 2015, is in the Woods of Lion Creek neighborhood in Carmel. The homeowners had just purchased it with the intent to make a few updates in order to make it their forever home.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The main level did not have a fireplace, so one of the homeowners’ top priorities was to add one to their living room. Also, the original basement was large, but it was unfinished, so another priority was to finish the basement to add more functional living space to the home.

AFTER SOLUTIONS

The goal was to take this newly purchased home and finish it in order to create the homeowners’ dream home.

1. The largest portion of the project was finishing the basement, which included adding a bedroom, full bathroom, fireplace, wet bar, entertainment area and home gym to the space.

2. The basement bar became the focal point of the new basement with a mosaic tile backsplash that extended to the ceiling, new cabinetry and countertops, with an island for seating.

3. Another focal point of the basement was the fieldstone fireplace that was added to the entertainment area.

4. Additionally, a large gas fireplace was added to the first floor of the home and was finished from floor to ceiling with a white quartzite wall tile and a live-edge wood mantel.

Fitting holly into Christmas

About 25 years after finishing his famous ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, 61-year-old Michelangelo began creating “The Last Judgment” on the wall above the TRAVEL chapel’s altar. Contemporary critics demanded that the dramatic fresco be destroyed. Some of it was.

Completed in 1541 after four years of effort, “The Last Judgment” depicted a nearly nude Jesus at the end of time, condemning the living and resurrected dead on his left to hell and welcoming those on his right into heaven. Nearly all the other 300 or so swirling bodies, including that of Peter, were originally nude, reflecting Michelangelo’s admiration of the human form and his virtuosity in depicting it. When Biagio da Cesena, the pope’s master of ceremonies, saw the nearly completed work, he complained that it was more appropriate for a public bath than a chapel. Michelangelo responded by painting da Cesena’s donkey-eared head atop the body of Minos, the guardian of hell, with a snake coiled around his body and biting him where it would hurt. In 1549, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese commissioned Marcello Venusti to paint a copy of “The Last Judgment” on wood for his private art collection.

In 1563, the Council of Trent decreed that claimed obscenity in “The Last Judgment” be eliminated. Soon after Michelangelo’s death, artist Daniele da Volterra — told the original would otherwise be destroyed — covered most of the exposed genitals and female breasts with loincloths and scarves, earning him the epithet “Il Braghettone” (“the breeches maker”). Even for a guy whose heart’s an empty hole, the Grinch’s question has been bothering me this holiday season. Can you have a “holly, jolly” Christmas?

I understand “jolly.” Jolly is an adjective that means happy and jovial. When I hear the word “jolly,” I picture Santa laughing and his belly bouncing like a bowlful of jelly. I think because of the famous line in “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” the word jolly, when used to describe a person, can come along with overweight connotations. Whether we think about it or not, the words used in our holiday songs, poems and movies build their own unique associations related to the Christmas season.

Holly is always a noun. Holly is either a proper name (Holly Golightly, Holly Hobbie, et. al.) or a shrub. The holly plant’s red

recreated an entire scene, believing the original was sexually explicit. During recent restorations of “The Last Judgment,” some over-paintings were removed, but de Volterra’s coverings were retained because of fears he had destroyed the underlying fresco. It’s almost as if song lyrics don’t pass through a grammar editor before they’re allowed to be recorded.

But that’s the strange thing that happens with language when it’s part of a culture — it evolves. It moves. Meanings shift and words that just happen to rhyme end up next to each other in a Christmas song sung by Burl Ives. But, at the end of the day, even though it’s technically not a grammatically correct phrase, we all know what it means to have a “holly, jolly” Christmas. It means to celebrate with people you love, share warmth and happiness, and maybe even kick back a few glasses of eggnog with Uncle Rick. What even is “nog”? That’s a question for another day.
