Town planning sewer upgrades

By Audrey Bailey • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville is making plans for its first ever large-scale project to improve the town’s aging sewer system infrastructure in the Village area.

Stormwater Program Manager Gavin Merriman and Supt. of Street/Stormwater Services Lance Lantz met with members of the Zionsville Village Residents’ Association Dec. 8 to discuss the $300,000 project.

Questions about the area’s stormwater system arose this summer after a heavy rainfall in July led to about 1.2 inches of water accumulating in less than an hour.

“The intensity was incredible. It was something I haven’t seen very often in my life,” Merriman said.

Village resident Ryan McCauley experienced severe flooding during these storms when a 24-inch pipe on his property overflowed.

“It would flood my driveway and slowly make its way to the rear, and then down the driveway, down the yard, out to the back to the south,” McCauley said. “There was about four feet of water on both sides of my retaining wall, and it was truly a river.”

Merriman said non-comprehensive draining systems, undersized and deteriorating pipes and a lack of drain sewers in certain areas are among the reasons for the recent flooding and increased stream heights.

“The village is very dense. It’s hard to retrofit that area,” he said. “It’s difficult to make those comprehensive draining improvements.”

Phase one of the project looks to improve capacity and alignment at Fourth Street storm sewer, beginning downstream. Construction is anticipated to begin in late summer or early fall of 2016.

As of now, no plans have yet been implemented for phase two of the project, which would include improving select inlets and lateral connections.

TPCC expanding to Carmel

The Whitestown church is addfaith ing a north location in Carmel.

Greg Anderson, who will serve as north campus pastor, said many churches are adopting the concept of one church with many sites.

TPCC North services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. Sundays in the auditorium of Creekside Middle School, 3525 W. 126th St., beginning Jan. 3. Anderson said the three gyms will be used for youth ministries and the cafeteria will serve as the lobby area.

“We’re looking at buying a permanent facility nearby there,” said Anderson, who lives in Zionsville. “We’ll be there for a year.”

Anderson has been a TPCC member for three years but was not on staff until four months ago when he was hired as campus pastor.

Anderson said there are many reasons why churches add campuses, but the main reason is “we want to reach as many people with the hope of the gospel is possible,” he said.

There are three services at the main campus in Whitestown, including one on Saturdays.

“The church is continuing to grow over the last several years, in fact (Dec. 5-6) we had the highest non-holiday attendance ever,” Anderson said. “We don’t want to sit here and have everyone come to us and build bigger buildings and parking lots. We want to go to them. There (are) a lot of people that live over in Carmel by Creekside that attend here so we thought that would be a great place to start our first campus.

Anderson said members say they are excited because they can invite neighbors and co-workers who live nearby.

“As a church, we have a vision of multiplying throughout the city,” Anderson said. “It’s our first one and we hope it’s not our last one.”

Church selected for restoration

Central Christian Church in Lebanon is one of 10 aging churches in the state to be selected as part of a pilot program to help restore old houses of worship.

Boone Co. Indiana Landmarks selected the churches as part of its Sacred Places in Indiana initiative, funded through a $1.2 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. The program is designed to help church leaders identify strategic and community partners before applying for grant funds.

“The whole Sacred Places thing has been a godsend,” said Senior Pastor Brad Miller.

The church built on its current location in 1904 has a sanctuary “in great shape,” according to Miller. But the challenge is a three-story education wing built in the ’50s.

“Our education wing needs to be more energy efficient,” he said. “If we could save on energy, we could put a considerable amount of (that) money into ministries.”

Miller expects that they could save thousands of dollars each year in energy costs with improvements to the building.

are really, really struggling,” said Miller, who added that their congregation numbers have declined in recent years. “We’re not struggling like some churches are, but we could do a lot more with efficiencies.”

Congregation leaders have attended their first training session out of four over the next six months. The first session taught church representatives how to present their case to outside agencies such as granting institutions and other potential financial partners.

“This is where we want to be,” he said. “We want to be here for the community.”

Harness maker helped town go

By Terri Horvath • news@currentzionsville.com In the pre-automotive age, you needed a horse or mule to travel. That meant the accessories needed for back in the day your horse-drawn vehicle had to be crafted. As a result, Zionsville businesses sprung up to meet the demand.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, harness makers and blacksmiths found plenty of business in Zionsville. One of those specialists was Joe Schenck, who owned Schenck Harness Shop on the west side of Main Street, next to the street now known as Cedar.

Although not verified, Schenck probably was born in the area. Records do show that his father settled here about 1865 after his service in the Civil War. As a harness maker, Schenck would cut leather to size from hides to make both plain and fancy harnesses. His typical dress for business was a white shirt, celluloid collar and black bowtie. Plus he wore a leather apron he made to protect his clothing.

Schenck’s peak business was in the spring getting teams ready for the field work. He also sold some hardware and horses. He probably saw the decline of his services sometime in

the early 1920s when the automobile gained popularity. To generate additional income, he took on an extra job as one of the town’s first rural mail carriers from the Zionsville Post Office.

During this time, he won a new Chevrolet touring car in a lottery, according to his grandson Herbert Schenck as recorded in “Remembering Zionsville.” “He didn’t like it,” Herbert said, “and sold it right away. People were supposed to drive horses.”

Nothing tastes like cod liver oil Commentary by Ward Degler There are a few things that taste so awful, I’m sure God never intended them for human consumption. Included on plain talk this list are fried liver, lutefisk and Brussels sprouts.

But, at the top of the list is cod liver oil.

We had it every morning when I was a kid.

It was like Mom had a check list before sending us out the door to school: Clean clothes, washed hands and face, hair combed, homework … and cod liver oil.

My sister and I tried everything to distract her so we could squeeze over the threshold and avoid that dreaded spoonful of oil. She would fake a coughing fit, and I was a master at remembering last minute homework papers in my room.

It never worked. Sis would emerge from the bathroom, and I would clomp downstairs after retrieving the forgotten paper only to face Mom at the door, spoon in hand.

Everything I ate throughout the day after that included the lingering flavor of cod liver oil. I figured my breath smelled like dead fish too. Maybe that’s why I could never get a date for school dances.

I tried to talk Mom into delivering the oil at bedtime. That way I would at least have eight hours for the taste to dissipate. I guess Mom realized her evening tasks might cause her to forget the cod liver oil.

“Mornings,” she said. “Get you off to a good start.”

I did escape the routine somewhat during my senior year by lying about it.

“Did you take your cod liver oil?” from the dining room as I was exiting the door.

“Mrph,” I would answer, not exactly saying either I did or I didn’t. “Mrph!”

Fast forward to a couple of years ago. I developed arthritis in my shoulders, and it got so bad I had trouble sleeping. Pain relievers helped, but when my wife searched the Internet she found a proven remedy: cod liver oil.

The unvarnished truth: cod liver oil relieves my arthritis pain. So, decades later I find that I have come full circle.

I still hate it. Faithfully, every day.

Zionsville artist’s jewelry inspired by family’s Indian heritage

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com When Aanal Mehta couldn’t find the right career opportunity as a graphic designer, she decided to take the plunge and start her own business. So, last June, COVER STORY Asdarm Creations – an online jewelry design store – was born.

“My hope is to reach out to local boutiques in Zionsville where I would like to sell my work to reach a wider audience, apart from participating at local art fairs,” Mehta said.

Mehta wanted a unique name for her business, so she used her husband’s initials (ASD) and her own initials (ARM).

“Hence Asdarm,” Mehta said. “I have been using zWORKS, founded by Dan Moyers in Zionsville, as shared co-working space and the resources they offer, which has helped me to set up my business.”

Her husband, Ameet Daftary, has always been supportive of her efforts.

“Aanal has a very creative mind and the ability to uniquely capture color, texture and style to generate art,” Daftary said. “Her travels across the world have opened her mind to ideas which imbue her creations. I therefore fully supported her to develop Asdarm Creations as a platform to share her creativity and views of art with people.”

Her creative designs come from her Indian heritage, drawing on the culture, art, music and diversity of her native country. The 44-year-old Zionsville resident also gets input from her mother and brother-in-law, whom she calls “fashion-forward” when it comes to dressing. Her greatest inspiration, however, is her aunt.

“She has been my mentor, guided me and

trained me to make ethnic jewelry,” Mehta said. “Her necklaces are most sought after in the elite circles of Bombay, India. I have been fortunate to learn, observe and adapt from her.”

Mehta finds herself drawn to recycled wood and recycled kitchen spoons and forks to create her “unusual and funky” necklaces. It can take two to three days to create the pendants for the pieces. She also designs ethnic global fusion jewelry.

“My goal is to promote different forms of Indian art and save it from becoming extinct,” she said. “Many fashion labels are working

with Indian art in the form of textiles and prints for clothing – so why not use fashion jewelry as a platform for Indian art to get its due recognition in the U.S. market?”

Her designs have a fan following among her loyal customers.

“Each piece is unique. There are both casual pieces as well as more upscale jewelry. There is a piece of jewelry for every type of person,” customer Stephanie Davis said.

“The jewelry that Aanal designs is simple and elegant. Unlike what is found in stores, each piece is one of a kind. It has a unique story down to every bead. All of these magical components are sourced worldwide and unite in a little global village of its very own,” customer Gaurang Daftary said.

But her work isn’t just for adults. Mehta also has a line of children’s jewelry.

“Young children of today are very fashion conscious and love to accessorize just like we adults do. When I had my first exhibition in Zionsville, one of the customers asked whether I create necklaces for 4-year-olds,” Mehta said.

“That set me thinking. There is a very small market for children’s jewelry.”

Other signature items for Mehta are unisex bracelets.

“There is a growing willingness among men to splurge on themselves while shopping for their companions,” Mehta said. “What’s more, men today are more open to new materials and new styles. Hence including men’s leather and bead bracelets on my online store.”

The one thing Mehta is most proud of – the fact none of her pieces is mass produced – makes for one-of-a-kind statement pieces.

“No two designs will be the same,” she said. “My inventory always changes.”

Reorg battle: It’s your money “Hey, it’s only taxpayer money, so let’s keep going.” An untold amount of cash has been expended on the reorganization battle involving Whitestown and Zionsville, both of which have doubled budgeted amounts because of legal fees. Just wait, because the costs will continue to rise if the case reaches the Indiana Supreme Court. Let cooler heads prevail, progress ensue and a compromise surface. It’s not a bottomless well of money at the combatants’ disposal.

‘Mean Girls’

“Nine out of Ten Dentists Agree” shouts at us from the packaging on one box from the wall of toothpaste choices. If all of these folks agree that this is the VERY best product, why are there so many choices that are lesser? And, if someone asserts that “reasonable people agree” does that mean that if we don’t that we must be the lone one who is unreasonable? The rhetoric of inclusion (or perhaps better said – exclusion) is a highly powerful sales tool. And, it serves well to oppress dissenting points of view.

Which clothes have we upon our backs?

Which lunch table is where we consume our daily calories? Which means of conveyance gets us back and forth to which occupation? All of these are being judged by someone. OK, humans categorize other humans. But what is it in us that urges criticism of those who make choices, benign to us, that are different from our own? When hours of Thanksgiving televised football with my sons was derailed

by Brighthouse, we found ourselves with a big screen, plenty of snacks and no sports.

While killing time for the promised return of the games, we wondered upon the 2004 hit movie “Mean Girls.” Therein a nice girl is ostracized because she challenged the prevailing hierarchy. When she resisted, it got nasty. How dare she think on her own!

In our boredom, I guess, it spawned a conversation about peer pressure – especially of the negative kind – and about our unwillingness to stand up when we believe the assertions of “reasonableness” is grossly overstated! Do nine of 10 dentists agree that we should buy Brand X? Probably not. Yet, a publically asserted and undefended falsehood often becomes the perceived truth. Is it factual? No. Does it matter? Not unless we say so.

How are your holidays going? Have you lowered your expectations like I advised last week? Additionally, might I humor suggest a few additional guidelines for surviving the last two weeks of 2015?

1. Start pounding the Vitamin C now!

Evil germs are out to get us all, and they can only be avoided with copious amounts of citric acid and booze. Mimosas work well!

2. Provide your spouse with an itemized gift list. Indicate exactly what you want and include a “Please do not buy” section. Trust me on this one, he/she needs to be Waterford clear on the what constitutes the perfect gift card (Target), sweatshirt (Louisville basketball, ladies small, anything black), appliance (Roomba 650 … at Target), and pair of boots (Aerosoles, tan With Pride, size 9.5).

3. Avoid the Castleton/Keystone crazy and just shop online. (I’m even thinking of switching grocery stores because I heard Kroger offers an online ordering/ curbside pickup option.) Target.com, Cardinalswear.com, Zappos.com … Doo? Are you getting this?

4. Less is more when it comes to holiday decorations. If even one house in your neighborhood is rubber-neck worthy, your measly mailbox bow doesn’t stand a chance anyway.

5. Don’t be afraid to lie about prior commitments or “sick” kids. Company party got you anxious? Bow out with a doggy doo-doo accident or a forgotten bassoon concert. (That actually happened, Steve and Brian. Seriously!)

6. New Year’s does not have to be celebrated at twelve-oh-oh. Nine o’clock is midnight somewhere, and with the appropriately coordinated enthusiasm, you can partake in the festivities and be asleep by 10. That may be the introvert in me talking, but one should never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep, especially when beginning a whole new year!

You only have to last another 16 days. You can do it! Remember to keep your expectations as far from Norman Rockwell as possible and follow the aforementioned rules.

The gift of Christmas Commentary by Dick Wolfsie As I look back on my years writing about the holidays in this column, I am reminded of some funny moments humor that have become part of the Wolfsie family lore.

When I grew up, you never told anyone in the family what you were getting them for Christmas. Surprising them was the best part. Of course, you could guess what you were getting, but in my house you had to be very careful.

“Is it a train set, Mom?” “No, Dickie.”

“Is it a set of Lincoln Logs?”

“No, it’s not.”

“Is it a Robbie the Robot?”

“OK, thanks for totally ruining Christmas for me.”

My wife, on the other hand, believes in telling me what she wants. A few years ago, I ordered a gift online for her, but when it finally landed on our doorstep in late December, I had no recollection of what might be in the huge box.

“I remember,” said Mary Ellen. “That’s what I asked you to get me for Christmas.”

“What is it?”

“Do you really want me to tell you? I

thought you liked surprises.”

“Surprises? It’s for you. You can tell me. You already know what it is.”

“I thought somebody should be surprised.”

When I buy Mary Ellen something, I usually miss the mark. She once made me take back, two weeks before Christmas, a Keurig coffee maker that was under the tree, wrapped. She knew what it was – and she didn’t want it. The clerk told me I was the first husband to return a gift before Christmas … still wrapped. That year she was on a money-saving kick, so instead of buying me the three books I wanted, she checked them out of the library. Three weeks later, I returned them. I guess I showed her.

Overall, I don’t have a gift-giving knack. Prior to our 25th anniversary, Mary Ellen began humming “I Love Paris in the Springtime.” I assumed she was dropping a hint, so I got her the sheet music. I thought she would get a kick out of knowing the lyrics.

“Where’s Amy?” was blown away after attending the Wynonna Judd and The Big Noise Christmas Holiday Show at the Palladium. The five-time Grammy winner and New York Times bestselling author commanded the stage with her powerful vocals and ‘sassy’ attitude. Fans were moved by her beautiful renditions of Christmas classics and her popular hits using her rich voice. Impressed by the Palladium size and acoustics, she mentioned she would love to come back to record a live show. She joked about her relationships with her famous mother and sister, sharing with the audience that she finally was able to break free and be herself on tour. Wynonna said she loved using her ‘gift of music’ to share with others during hard times and over the holidays. She had many fans in tears with her final song of the evening, “Silent Night.” Wynonna had captured the audience’s hearts as they joined in singing softly the words of “Silent Night.” It was at that moment that I felt blessed and lucky to have shared this special moment with my parents. No matter the faith, the night closed with the true meaning behind the reason for the season. It’s safe to say Wynonna knows how to rock the stage using her gift of music and love to bring fans together.

Deana Keen and Libby Macomber, of Carmel, enjoyed the concert and thought Wynonna and The Big Noise Band was amazing. They mentioned when she sang “Silent Night” (after her standing ovation) you could hear a pin drop because the audience was so moved by her moving rendition.

Rappers call it champs, others call it bubbly, and your grandmother might refer to it as sparkling wine, but either way you put it, a good bottle of champagne is a staple not only drinks on New Year’s Eve, but also at any sophisticated holiday party.

Dom Perignon said, “Come quickly. I am tasting the stars!” when he first invented champagne, and while a bottle of Dom might not need anything to accompany it besides a charcuterie and cheese tray, here are some fun ways to spiff up any cheap bottle of champs this holiday season.

• Rosemary and pomegranate – Add fresh pomegranate seeds and a sprig of rosemary to each glass of prosecco or champagne for an herby, yet refreshing, drink.

• Berries – Blueberries, raspberries or cranberries can make a glass of champagne look colorful while also adding little bites of fruity flavor. For Christmas morning, cranberries and orange juice make for a more colorful mimosa.

• Champagne floats – Add a scoop of mango or tangerine sorbet to the bottle or a glass of champagne to make a champagne “float.” Best served at the end of a meal, since the sorbet makes this drink feel like dessert!

• Flavored liqueur or simple syrup – Artisanal simple syrups or add-ins such a ginger liqueur or peach Schnapps can add just a little kick of flavor to an average bottle of sparkling wine.

• Mint – Another option to serve with dessert is a glass of champagne with mint leaves and a splash of bourbon. Pairs well with anything chocolate.

Ideal tailgater Christmas gifts

Now if we believe this, then there has to be a better way to shop for the tailgater on your list then to just go out to the stores looking for things. There is and here is a simple routine to plan for success.

Start at coleman.com to make your wish list. Start at tailgating equipment, but also look at chairs, grills, canopies and coolers and more. Just invest 26 minutes and you’ll have a list of items that you could see at your tailgate next year.

Enter one of your listed items into your favorite search engine with the item name and manufacturer and the word “sale” or “cheap.”

What you’ll get as a result is usually a bunch of photos of the item you want with prices on them. If these are lower than your list price, find out where they are being sold. Most often it can be a local store that has them on sale.

Then you can just go to that store and buy it at a good price. Don’t forget that this is the season for lower prices on camping gear (it’s on sale) since the season for outdoor activity is NOT winter. Repeat this process time and again until you have satisfied your wish/shopping list.

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler (see below if no double boiler). Combine candy cane chunks with chocolate (add peppermint flavoring at this point if desired). Pour mixture onto a cookie sheet layered with parchment or waxed paper and place in the refrigerator for 45 minutes or until firm. Remove from cookie sheet and break into pieces (like peanut brittle).

If you do not have a double boiler you can use the microwave. Just cut the white chocolate in pieces and place in a microwave safe bowl. Adjust your microwave to 50 percent strength so you don’t burn the chocolate.

Then heat the chocolate 30 seconds at a time and stir it between each 30 second interval.

Repeat this process as needed until the white chocolate is mostly melted.

Even though this dessert isn’t originally from Peru, it is one of the most loved and popular sweets in my country! This Christmas add a unique spin to your holiday menu with this “deliciosicima” crema volteada.

Note: Bain-marie consists of placing a container (baking pan, bowl, etc.) of food in a large, shallow pan of warm water, which surrounds the food with gentle heat.

CREMA VOLTEADA Serves: 8 Ingredients For the caramel: 3/4 cup, generous, granulated sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons water, 3 drops lemon juice For the custard: 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk, 1 (12 fl oz) can evaporated milk, 4 eggs, 1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions For the caramel: In a medium saucepan over mediumlow heat, melt sugar with water and lemon juice until mixture is golden brown (about 8 to 10 minutes), make sure not to let sugar burn. Carefully pour hot caramel into a round baking mold with a hole in the middle turning it so caramel covers both the bottom and sides. Set aside.

For the custard: Preheat oven at 350F.

In a large bowl, lightly whisk eggs until well combined; add condensed milk, evaporated milk and vanilla bean, mix well until smooth. Pour the egg-milk mixture into the caramel baking mold and bake in a bain-marie for 1 hour. To be sure the cream is cooked insert a knife blade into the cream; if the blade comes out clean, the cream is done.

Remove from oven and let it cool. To serve, run a knife around the cream where it is connected to the mold. Carefully invert mold into a serving platter and jiggle loose so it falls in one piece. Caramel custard can be served at room temperature or chilled. Garnish with strawberries or edible flowers and mint leafs.

MyArt finds a new home

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com MyArt has moved to a new location just a few blocks from their previous spot on Pine Street. relocation “Now I’m back close to where I started,” said owner Barb Hegeman, who has moved several times through the years and first opened her doors on the top floor of the Potpourri Building on Main Street.

Her new location at 40 E. Poplar St. was previously the home of Choosy Pets. One of her art teachers painted the walls and floor, and on Dec. 1 classes resumed.

With Midwest Jewelers and Estate Buyers expanding in the building, Hegeman knew the need to move was coming. Her three sons and husband helped transport tables, chairs, shelving and all of her art supplies on Thanksgiving morning.

“The town was deserted,” Hegeman said.

“Two hours and it was done.”

Offering a variety of art classes for ages four and up, MyArt also has independent art studio time and teaches homeschooling groups and scout troops.

added Carmel, Fishers and Zionsville. A few years ago, she sold the Hamilton Co. studios but still maintains the Zionsville location and a relationship with the owner of the other locations.

“We work together, which is great,” Hegeman said.

For 2016, Hegeman is planning more daytime adult classes and will post summer camp information by February. Her hope is to offer more canvas painting parties and kids painting events that would include a drop off art class on Friday evenings so parents can have dinner on Main Street while their children are creating a masterpiece.

“Come and create art and have some fun,” she said.

Whitestown sewing shop opens

By Kelsey Ligon • news@currentzionsville.com As Whitestown’s Anson development continues to expand rapidly, the Main Street area hasn’t seen much growth in new biz recent years.

But on Dec. 5 the older part of town got a boost with the opening of the Designer Sewing Center, located near the new Heritage Trail. Natalie and Steve Reiners, longtime Whitestown residents, opened the shop, which sells sewing supplies and fabrics and offers a variety of classes for adults and children.

The idea to set up the center first came to Natalie when she was approached by friends and neighbors about other sewing projects.

That was when Natalie realized many people in her community had not had the opportunity to learn to sew.

“The art of being able to design and make your own clothes – from concept to completion – is something that is hard to find these days,” she said.

Natalie has had a lifelong passion for sewing, a craft she learned from her mother and grandmother in Canada. She made it into her career, working her way up to the role of

Alex L., Carmel, IN Alex, What a great queseyecare tion! The short answer is an overwhelming “YES!” There are many things we check in an eye examination and vision is just one.

The most important reason you need your comprehensive eye examination is because most eye diseases have no symptoms until it’s too late. Glaucoma, cataracts, ocular tumors, macular degeneration and many more cause no visual symptoms until they are in their advanced stages.

School screenings and primary care doctor screenings do not replace eye examinations either. Most of these diseases cannot be detected with a screening. Also, there are other visual issues that are not detected by reading a traditional eye chart. Eye alignment, tracking and focusing disorders are critical for learning and are not detected in screenings.

The recommended comprehensive eye examination schedule is as follows: at birth, between 6 and 12 months of age, then at 3 years old, 5 years old and every year after.

Sometimes, depending on what is found in these examinations you may need to be seen more frequently. I have patients who are seen every six months or less, depending on the condition. And many have no visual symptoms with their condition.

I tell patients that we are really good at having our teeth cleaned every six months. We do this to keep our teeth healthy and to catch problems early for better treatment. I remind patients that it is a lot easier to treat eye disease and disorders when caught early. It’s also good to remember that we can eat with false teeth but we cannot see with a fake eye … right?

You may not have considered this a big decision, but deciding on a new shower head can be a complicated and sometimes home difficult decision. There are many factors to consider and, based on your priorities, there are a variety of options.

The best traditional showerhead for you can vary based on your needs. For example, athletes who rely on showerheads to recuperate sore muscles should purchase something different than someone who relies on them solely to wake them up in the morning. Be sure the showerhead has a pivot mechanism so you can adjust the spray direction, as well as various spray settings that you can change when needed if you so desire.

One specific type of showerhead, referred to as rain-head showers, are mounted on the ceiling of the shower and are usually 8 to 12 inches in diameter. By being mounted this way, plus with small holes that extinguish consistent, small droplets, they give the effect of being rained on. Some advanced models have various settings from a drenching to a light drizzling rain.

Hand showers are another option. Homeowners usually choose these when they

want to direct where the shower water goes.

Whether it’s washing the dog or assisting young children, hand showers are made to make the act of cleaning easier. Hand showers are available with a variety of functions and can be used in everything from a standard shower to a fully custom shower.

Body sprays are new to some homeowners and combine the power of a showerhead or hand shower with massaging water jets, usually mounted on the walls of the shower.

They give the homeowner a relaxing, soothing experience that they previously could only get from their masseuse. Some body sprays have more than one jet, allowing for an even more luxurious experience.

Copenhagen’s Kastellet (“Citadel”) may be the most beautiful active military base in the world. It is also the site of a unique religious tradition and a great choice for travel an afternoon stroll.

In 1626, Danish King Christian IV began building Kastellet to defend the harbor north of Copenhagen. The fortress took the form of a five-pointed star, surrounded by a moat. Bastions at each point allowed cannons to fire in all directions. To enable defenders to weather a siege, the fortress included 16 windmills for grinding flour and a Baroque style church where troops could pray.

In 1725, King Frederick IV built a prison behind the church, with eye holes in the cell walls so inmates could follow the church proceedings. The most famous prisoner was Johann Friedrich Struensee, a German physician to schizophrenic King Christian VII who became an important governmental reformer in his own right. Following discovery of Struensee’s affair with King Christian’s young queen, he was held in Kastellet’s prison in

1772 until he was beheaded, quartered and displayed in pieces a few blocks away in what is now a lovely park.

Today, Kastellet houses branches of the Danish military, including the intelligence service. Colorful barracks sit amid the grassy ramparts and a lone Danish soldier stands guard at the guard house. Cannons point toward ancient foes. But the entire property is freely open to the public, with concerts held regularly on the manicured grounds and in the church.

On the fourth Friday after Easter, Danes parade atop Kastellet’s ramparts in spring finery celebrating Store Bededag (“Great Prayer Day”), a religious holiday introduced by the Church of Denmark in 1686 to consolidate several minor feast days. Every Oct. 28, the last surviving windmill, erected in 1847, is tested to assure that it remains capable of feeding besieged troops. So far, so good.
