Zionsville Road closure coming

Christmas Crawl – The Christmas in the Village Christmas Crawl will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 14. Participating shops will stamp shoppers’ cards for a chance at a prize. By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak and several town department leaders gathered Dec. 5 for the biannual Mayor’s Night In town news at Town Hall. Haak presented updates on several projects and answered questions from audience members.

STREETS The town will continue its “aggressive” spending to upgrade and maintain streets, Haak said, with the next major project slated for the widening of Zionsville Road.

The road will expand from two to three lanes and include a bike path planned to extend to the Vonterra subdivision. The road is expected to be closed during construction, which will save $450,000 and allow the project to be completed two months faster, Haak said.

The town recently completed upgrades at the Zionsville Road and 96th Street intersection. Haak said it was not converted into a roundabout because of the high number of large trucks that travel through the area daily.

PUBLIC SAFETY Thanks in large part to the county’s local income tax for public safety, Zionsville has hired 16 new firefighters and five police officers in the last two years.

“We were woefully short on public safety personnel,” Haak said.

The Zionsville Police Dept. recently graduated its first citizens academy class, and the Zionsville Fire Dept. will hold its annual citizens class in the spring. ZFD added a new ambulance this year and will add a new engine in 2018.

Haak said the town will add five emergency warning sirens throughout town in the next year.

PLANNING The town recently sold Creekside Corporate Park, with closing expected to happen in January. Haak said the town is expecting to see interest from at least a couple of new tenants when the sale is finalized.

Haak said the town is in discussions to sell one parcel of land on the site of Zionsville’s former Town Hall building but that the other parcel won’t go on the market until a new

road to divide the site is completed, likely in spring 2018.

Two potential Kroger stores are on hold, Haak said, because the grocer recently bought former Marsh stores in Boone Village and at 106th and Michigan. One store was set to be constructed at Pittman Farms, a development that has stalled because its sibling owners have taken disagreements about their properties to court.

“They’ve got to resolve their family squabble. It’s pretty sad,” Haak said. “That project would be open if it wasn’t for that.”

The mayor said the town will likely begin a study in 2018 to improve traffic flow in the downtown area.

PARKS The parks department is in the midst of a 5-year master plan update, with the next open house scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at Town Hall.

It also is working to expand the Big 4 Rail Trail to connect to Whitestown. The long-term goal is for the trail to eventually stretch all the way through Boone County and end in Lafayette.

Haak also said that developers of the Vonterra subdivision are incrementally donating 43 acres along Eagle Creek to the town for a park that is expected to be complete within the next two years.

Haak said weather delayed the CR 700 pathway project, which will not be complete until spring. Another project on hold is upgrades to the pedestrian crossing at Oak Street and Ford Road. Haak said bids came in double what the town expected, so it will be rebid in the coming months to be complete next year.

Hope for Heroes – Akard True Value Hardware will accept socks, underwear, T-shirts and personal care items for homeless veterans in conjunction with the Hope for Heroes program, a project of ESA Kappa Theta Chapter of Zionsville. Donations may be dropped off at Akard through Dec. 19.

ZIONSVILLE/ WHITESTOWN C.R. 400 S./425 S. is CONSTRUCTION closed between C.R. 650 E. and 750 E, as crews work on the 300 S./400 S. connector project in east Whitestown. Two lanes are under construction, although ultimately it is planned to be a four-lane, divided roadway. The project is expected to continue into 2018.

CARMEL A water main upgrade is under way on Range Line Road between City Center and Executive drives. Once the water main is relocated, traffic will move to the inner lanes of Range Line Road for work on the outer lanes. The road will remain open throughout the project. The city is unsure of when the project will be complete.

Spring Mill Road is closed between 106th and 116th streets, with additional lane restrictions between Main Street and Mallard Court. The road is expected to reopen in mid-December.

Jury duty scam – A scam involving the threat of arrest for missing jury duty has hit central Indiana. A victim answers the telephone and the caller says a warrant is being issued for not appearing for jury duty. The caller may give the name of a courthouse employee, a deputy, or a name similar to an employee. The victim is then told to pay money to avoid arrest. These calls are fake. Courts do not operate this way. Contact would be made by regular mail.

Holliday Road bridge collapses news@currentzionsville.com A bridge in north Zionsville collapsed after the driver of a John Deere tracpublic safety tor attempted to cross it pulling farm equipment that was wider than the structure.

Thomas Smith, 34, of Indianapolis told a Boone County Sheriff’s Office deputy who responded to the accident at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 2 on the Holliday Road bridge over Eagle Creek that he didn’t realize the disc ripper attachment was too wide. He said he was nearly across when he noticed a top beam start to shake before the structure collapsed.

Smith wasn’t injured in the crash. According to a press release from BCSO, Smith was cooperative with the investigation and displayed no signs of impairment from drugs or alcohol.

suspect sought Sugar Creek bridge in northern Boone County was damaged in late 2016 by farm equipment, and law enforcement is still searching for the person responsible for causing “multi-million dollar destruction,” according to a BCSO press release.

The Indiana Dept. of Revenue has opened a refund process for customers who paid a Zionsville tax accidentally collected by several Whitestown WHITESTOWN restaurants.

Nine Whitestown restaurants charged Zionsville’s 1 percent food and beverage tax between 2008 and 2017, collecting nearly $300,000 that the state distributed to Zionsville.

Customers may request a refund by submitting a refund form found at in.gov/ dor/4036 and a proof of purchase, such as a copy of a receipt or bank statement with the name and address of the restaurant and transaction amount. Approved refund checks will be mailed. “Though it is unfortunate that customers were charged the wrong amount of tax on their purchases, the department of revenue is focused on assisting impacted customers recover as much of their money as possible, while working with local businesses to register them within the proper taxing districts,� IDOR Commissioner Adam Krupp stated in a press release.

Because of the state’s statute of limitations, refunds may only be requested for improperly paying the tax within three years of the request. REQUEST A REFUND To receive a refund, customers should submit: • A claim for refund form GA-110L. Customers can access the form via the Indiana DOR website at in.gov/ dor/4036.htm. • Proof of Purchase. Customers must provide a copy of receipt(s) or a valid financial statement from an accredited financial institution. Receipts and statements must include the name and address or location number of the restaurant, along with the transaction amount. *Source IDOR rant stopped charging the tax.

All but one of the affected restaurants have a Zionsville address, which officials believe is what led to most of the confusion. Whitestown does not have a food and beverage tax.

IDOR announced in November that it will implement geo-mapping software to accurately identify in which municipality a business is located regardless of its address.

Currently, business owners self-report their city or town.

Zionsville murder suspect convicted for IMPD HQ shooting news@currentzionsville.com

An Indianapolis man arrested for the 2016 murder of Zionsville resident John Clements was found guilty public safety Dec. 6 of shooting a firearm at two IMPD district headquarters last year.

Damoine Wilcoxson, 22, was convicted on two counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal recklessness. A sentencing hearing is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 22.

Wilcoxson was found Wilcoxson guilty of attempted murder for firing at the IMPD North District headquarters on the night of Oct. 13, 2016, where two officers inside the building were targeted. The jury also found him guilty of criminal recklessness for the shooting that occurred at IMPD’s Northwest District headquarters on Oct. 4, 2016.

“It is simply a miracle that officers at

the North District headquarters were not injured or killed in the rapid fire of 16 highpowered rounds at the district headquarters, including a round which missed an officer’s head by inches,” Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry stated in a press release. “Damoine Wilcoxson intentionally targeted our public safety officers, and we are obviously pleased that the excellent work by IMPD investigators and our staff has resulted in these convictions.”

Wilcoxson was arrested Oct. 31, 2016, and has been in custody since that time.

Curry He also is facing a pending attempted murder case which stems from a SWAT standoff at his apartment on that day.

Wilcoxson is accused of murdering John Clements, 82, on Sept. 28, 2016, in his driveway on Terrace Drive in Zionsville as he checked the mail. His jury trial for Clement’s murder is set for May 7, 2018.

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com An outdoor holiday ice skating rink will open at the Whitestown Municipal Complex Dec. 15. Whitestown Parks HOLIDAYS Director Nathan Messer was drawn to the idea after seeing a demo rink and display at this year’s State Parks Conference.

“With the uncertainty of Indiana weather, the ability to have an ice rink here in Whitestown really apMesser pealed to me,” Messer said.

The rink will be part of the town’s annual holiday celebration that features a visit with Santa Claus and the Santa Parade on Dec. 16. The event will feature hot cocoa, crafts and pictures with Santa.

“At 5 p.m. Santa leaves on the firetruck to prepare for the Santa Parade through our neighborhoods, which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m.,” Messer said.

Messer said the rink will draw people for a variety of reasons. “(We expect) kids coming to learn to skate with their parents to couples coming out for

“Due to this being the first year for the event, we wanted to try it out first,” Messer said. “We will explore options based on the opening weekend and how this first-time event is received by the community.”

A gingerbread house created with repurposed items earned Allure Salon the grand prize in the business catvillage egory of the Village’s annual Holiday Decorating Contest.

In previous years, the contest was promoted as door decorating, but the rules were changed this year to include the entire house or business.

Thirteen homes and businesses were evaluated by a panel of four judges.

Allure Salon’s entry was noted for its unique take, using items around the house.

“We (value) in the rules creativity, originality,” said Sally Zelonis, who has spearheaded the contest since its inception four years ago. “People don’t have to spend a lot

Zelonis said the residential winners created themes to match their homes.

“People in the Village, whether their house is modern or old, fit their decorations with their house style,” Zelonis said.

Grand prize residential winners Brad and Monique Schnabel decorated their home with pine boughs and ribbon that complements their porch’s trim.

The number of overall entries was higher than last year but lower than previous years. Zelonis hopes there will be more entries in the future through continued communication and word of mouth.

Zelonis started the contest after seeing a similar decorating contest while living in a historic community in Rhode Island.

“It just makes for a wonderful holiday season,” she said.

County considers bike share

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Do you want to rent a bike to explore Boone County? The concept is being discussed, though it’s development still in the initial phase.

“It’s an idea we’re interested in,” said Molly Whitehead, executive director for the Boone County Economic Development Corp.

The idea was proposed by Megan Swain, director of community development with BCEDC, who is working on quality of life projects throughout the county. Swain recently invited bike share platform Zagster to be part of a discussion between the towns of Zionsville, Lebanon and Whitestown to determine how each area could utilize the program.

“We want to grow in a smart way, and we want to be able to make all of Boone County a place where people want to live and work,” said Whitehead, adding that bike share programs could benefit tourism as well as connect business parks.

Through the program, users rent a bicycle for a short period of time. Payment options vary from company to company,

with some requiring a credit card payment at a docking station and others offering payment through an app.

“Of course, if it’s a Boone County initiative we really need to have the trail system throughout the county completely linked up,” Whitehead said. “We lack that connectivity right now, especially between Lebanon and Whitestown. That’s something that really has to go hand-in-hand, we believe.”

Bike sharing is popular at colleges and universities in Indiana. There also are programs in Indianapolis and Carmel.

The number of bike share systems nationally has increased steadily each year since 2010, when the concept came to the U.S., according to the National Association of City Transport Officials. Carmel’s program, operated by Zagster, quadrupled in one year since its 2015 launch and has expanded into Westfield.

Zionsville couple opens Closet Candy Boutique after online sales soar

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsville.com What started as a few racks of clothing at an airbrush tanning salon in Scottsdale, Ariz., has turned into a multimillion dollar boutique anchored in cover story central Indiana in only a few short but difficult years.

Christina Smith, who moved to Zionsville in 2015 to be near family, opened Closet Candy Boutique in Carmel’s Clay Terrace. It’s the company’s first brick-and-mortar store, but it had already gained quite a following across the nation before its August debut, garnering more than 1 million Facebook fans before it even opened its doors.

Despite its fast start, the road to success wasn’t easy.

Smith’s husband and shop co-owner, Chad, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the midst of launching the boutique.

The couple struggled to balance caring for their two children (Jacob, 15, Brody, 10), opening a new store and Chad’s medical treatment.

Smith said the couple plowed through the tough times by the grace of God and with a lot of coffee. Chad is now in remission.

“The biggest thing we took away from that experience is that with each other and our faith, we know now we can get through anything,” Smith said.

Unexpected journey

Smith didn’t start out intending to build a national clothing boutique. But when tanning salon clients requested she ship the few clothing items available for sale across the nation, she knew she was on to something.

Closet Candy Boutique launched online in 2012, and six weeks later, through the power of social media, it was making more than $100,000 in monthly sales. By the end of its first year online, Closet Candy Boutique had brought in more than $1 million in sales.

Since its launch, the company has filled more than 300,000 online orders, donated $100,000 to charity and continues to operate debt-free.

The online store seamlessly has transitioned to the brick-and-mortar store in Clay Terrace. It offers a boutique shopping experience that mirrors its online presence with lighting designed for selfies in dressing rooms and a colorful accent wall for photographs.

Betsy Simpson, 36, has followed the company on Instagram for more than two years. She moved from Scottsdale, where Closet Candy Boutique started, to Carmel in August and was shocked to see the Instagram announcement that it was launching in her new hometown.

Simpson “As much as I love the convenience of ordering online, it’s always great to go into the store and try the items on,” Simpson said. “The staff at Closet Candy Boutique are all so friendly and eager to help me pick out the perfect pieces.”

As a young professional who works as a physician assistant in breast surgical oncology for Indiana University Health Physicians West, Simpson said she loves that Closet Candy Boutique offers fun and trendy casual and work clothes.

Team effort

The early success of Closet Candy Boutique has been a team effort. Smith has a keen eye for fashion, Chad has a background in marketing and design, and they share a faith that has helped them persevere through the challenges of opening a new business while battling cancer at the same time.

“You just realize that God brought the challenging times so that we could stop and remember to really appreciate the rewarding times,” Smith said.

Smith designs some of the items featured at Closet Candy Boutique. She describes the products as comfortable, cute, everyday clothing.

Closet Candy is planning to open its second shop in Dallas in 2018. Smith also is considering a second Indiana location at The Fashion Mall at Keystone.

Does Jane fit?

Commentary by Terry Anker Recently, in a meeting waiting for the inevitable straggler to arrive so that we could begin, small talk around the table turned to politics. This wasn’t of the Donald Trump or Barack Obama variety. It was bit more banal. And, in some ways, a bit more insidious. The tone of a few turned to vetting the ideology of a few who were not in the room. “I think that Jane doesn’t share our views,” one person said. The problem with Jane, it seemed, was that her lifestyle choices suggested a lack of progressiveness on her part. Asked if Jane had said or done something to offend the excoriating colleague, he asserted that she had not but that he sensed that she might be wrong-minded.

Another contributor to the organization jumped into the back-talking about Jane to posit that anyone who doesn’t fit the “culture” of the group should be encouraged to get the “right” mind frame or be gone. Does Jane fit? What if her perceived views – or worse, personal choices – are not in step with the controlling sect of the assemblage? If diversity is valued, do we solely regard a diversity of certain types but not others?

Another, defended Jane’s right to think, to herself, anyway, in a direction that might not be consistent with what the cool kids might like. Just as the battle lines were drawn, the late-comer found a seat and the matter was dropped. Group culture and cohesion do matter. Any coach will claim that the players on the most effective teams share common beliefs, work ethic and demeanors. But, if diversity, especially that of dogma, is most important, can we hope to find any real harmony?

Time to remember Pearl Harbor Commentary by Ward Degler As scary as 9/11 was — and to this day my heart stops for a second when I remember — there is plain talk another date that is worse: Dec. 7, 1941.

I was 6 years old. Like most kids that age, I believed everything and looked forward to each new day. The attack on Pearl Harbor changed all of that forever.

We were living in the North Woods of Wisconsin, 12 miles from the nearest town. It was Sunday and Dad was home from his job as superintendent at the CCC camp, a forestry extension of the Works Progress Authority.

It had snowed the night before and I was playing outside with the dog. Suddenly, my mother appeared at the back door. She had a strange look on her face, unlike any I’d seen before. She called me softly to come inside.

In the living room Dad was hunched over our battery-powered radio. The program had been interrupted with the news that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. As we listened to the unfolding details, a dark and heavy blanket of dread settled over us.

I had no idea where Pearl Harbor was,

and all I knew about Hawaii was that the women wore grass skirts and the men played ukuleles.

That night I lay awake watching at the window by my bed, expecting the Japanese army to come marching down our country road at any moment. At the time it didn’t register that our cabin in Wisconsin was thousands of miles away from danger.

My dad had a commission in the Army but was sent home because he had bleeding ulcers, a malady that stayed with him most of his life. The government closed down the CCC camps and the rest of the WPA and focused America’s energy and resources on winning the war. We won, of course, but at a terrible cost.

Today’s war continues against another enemy who wishes us harm, and we exercise a new brand of vigilance and determination to win. Still, when Dec. 7 arrives each year, I find myself waking up in the middle of the night and looking for a moment out the window at the darkness.

The moment has arrived, friends. Today, I engage in a biannual battle with my husband, Doo, as part of the ongohumor ing “Tinsel War.” Launched in 1996, the conflict essentially pits my Christmas traditions against Doo’s, with me insisting that a tree is essentially naked without the glittery beauty of shredded faux-aluminum. Doo disagrees. Vehemently. To keep this marriage alive, we decided long ago to alternate our tinsel years so that each of us can relive the holiday magic of our childhoods precisely as we remember, at least every other December.

The problem is that going without tinsel is easier on me than incorporating tinsel is on Doo. He can’t stand the application (which I insist is done in a precise, systematic manner to ensure proper coverage and consistency), the mess (which admittedly dominates the main floor for as long as the tree stands) or the idea of finding tinsel in our vacuum, couch and the occasional shoe until July. Although I may enjoy a stunning tinsel-frosted Fraser this year, I’ll also have to deal with Mr. Grinch and his incessant complaining. Even worse, Doo has somehow indoctrinated our two sons into agreeing with him! I still have the girls on my side, but all this bah-humbugging makes me want to literally shove tinsel up their Ebenezers.

Doo’s forces have taken hits with Boy No. 1 away at college and Boy No. 2 hunkered down with a cold. But should he muster some sort of resistance, I’ve devised a clever, snowflaking maneuver that will result in heavy male losses.

Let the 11th battle of the “Tinsel War” commence! Peace out.

A minute later we see: it’s eight thirty-one. Who would want this as a gift? Maybe it’s for people who are literate but just never learned numbers?

The Children’s Weber Grill: For kids who already have iPhones and computers and high-tech video games. What fun, to have a fake plastic grill so you can pretend you are cooking a plastic hot dog on pretend coals. Learn to be just like Dad, who in 17 years behind the barbecue still can’t figure out medium rare.

Lions Club tackles diabetes Commentary by Marcia Ellett Diabetes is the sixth-leading cause of death worldwide, killing one person every six seconds and more Awareness than 5 million people annually—plenty of reasons for Lions Club International to make it a new area of focus. LCI is meeting this global health emergency head on by raising awareness of diabetes, expanding access to care through screening and treatment programs and improving quality of life for sufferers through special camps and recreational programs.

Approximately 750,000 people in Indiana have diabetes. That’s enough to fill Lucas Oil Stadium more than 10 times. Regretfully, up to half of those with diabetes do not even know they have it. So, Zionsville Lions Club chose to combat the rising diabetes epidemic in the community by selecting November, National Diabetes Awareness Month, to kick off a ZLC Diabetes Group.

The group, led by Zionsville Lions Club member Mel Prince, a retired senior medical director in diabetes for Eli Lilly & Co., will support LCI’s goal to raise awareness and improve education efforts around diabetes.

“The Zionsville Lions Club has a number of members, several who are dedicated health professionals or who are living with diabetes, that are passionate about educating the public on the risks of diabetes and the importance of a healthy diet and exercise,” Prince said. “We look forward to implementing activities in support of LCI’s diabetes mission over the coming months and to finding ways to utilize Lions Park in that endeavor.”

Add to this equation the fact that 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes (among them 1.9 million Hoosiers) and 90 percent don’t even know it, and the urgency to get the word out becomes even more apparent.

“We encourage everyone to take a diabetes risk assessment test, to see their physician if the test indicates a risk of diabetes, and to urge friends and loved ones to take the assessment test as well,” Prince said.

Coworking with a twist is coming to Boone County.

The Innovation Hub coworking will add a makerspace to the traditional coworking concept. Although office space and business tools are shared in a coworking space, materials and equipment for inventing and tinkering are shared in a makerspace.

“The makerspace is really looking at innovation,” said Ben Worrell, deputy director for the Boone County Economic Development Corp, which is leading the initiative.

“That captures the essence of both the coworking side and the makerspace side.”

Access to the space would be available through a membership.

“It’s not being put in as a competitive product to zWORKS by any means,” Worrell said of the Zionsville-based coworking space. “(It is) a collaborative effort and expansion of the great things that are already happening at zWORKS.” Three locations offer a makerspace area

around Indianapolis but this would be the first for Boone County. The Innovation Hub is expected to be in the former Bill Estes car dealership lot near downtown Lebanon through a partnership between BCEDC and the City of Lebanon’s Redevelopment Commission.

The design of the Lebanon location might be modeled on the makerspace Ruckus in Indianapolis, according to Worrell. There is no timeline for opening, according to BCEDC Executive Director Molly Whitehead, but she anticipates activity at the location in 2018.

Worrell hopes this will build collaboration between members of the makerspace and manufacturers in Boone County.

“From a workforce development standpoint we can look to the space to provide the one-on-one skills for our manufacturing partners out there,” Worrell said.

Items like 3-D printing, electronic circuitry, CNC machines and metalworking could potentially be tools in the Innovation Hub. The Boone County Economic Development Corp. is seeking input from those who might utilize the space before confirming what will be included. Marsh closure prompts Akard remodel

By Desiree WIlliams news@currentzionsville.com Akard True Value Hardware has finished a round of remodeling and rebranding in its Boone Village boone village store. It now has a central-gift and impulse-buys section surrounded by typical hardware items.

The remodel began in July 2016 after the Boone Village Marsh closed. Owner Leigh Ann Akard said the store saw a decrease in visitors, which raised concern that customers could lose sight of the store completely.

“If they’re not coming to Boone Village already for some basic needs, they’re not necessarily coming here for everything,” Akard said.

Store officials reviewed what was and wasn’t working. Akard said they realized the internet was possibly the biggest competition rather than big box stores. In July 2016, Akard introduced a center section featuring small items for the summer and moved core hardware to the outer ring of the store with the goal of becoming a onestop shop.

going, and we went back to the drawing board and did even more reconfiguring of that center area so that we could gain more space,” she said.

The store adjusted again last year during Christmas and continues to update the area. Akard said store management attends up to five buying markets each year to refresh the hardware, rental and gift sections.

better reflect the store’s relationship to the village rather than focusing on its position under the True Value Co. umbrella.

Akard said the store is looking forward to the future of the shopping center when Kroger opens, which is scheduled for Jan. 18.

“We are hoping that maybe (Kroger) will attract people who may have never been to Boone Village before,” she said. “We hope to be ready at the same time they are.”

The Bishops to headline

‘New Year’s Extravaganza’ at The Palladium

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com This will be a little different than the first New Year Eve’s appearance Bryan Bishop’s band had at The Palladium.

“We’re going to ring in the New Year instead of being done at 10 o’clock,” said Bishop, who lives near The Palladium in Carmel.

At The Palladium’s first New Year’s Eve party in 2015, The Bishops played in Robert Adam Room from 8 to 10 p.m. Then the Hot Sardines took the main stage when the other bands were done.

Last year, the format changed, and all the bands kept playing and a dance floor was added to The Palladium’s main stage.

That’s where The Bishops will perform for the “New Year’s Extravaganza.”

“It’s a prestigious stage. We are very honored,” Bishop said.

“It’s going to be the same party but on a much bigger scale than two years ago. We are going to reach back and do more ‘60s and ‘70s, and of course we are going to be playing ‘80s. The only thing different is we’ll have a little more production. We’re going to shoot a promotion video that night.”

Bishop describes The Bishops as a big variety band.

“Our slogan is we don’t put on a concert, we throw a party,” Bishop said. “The fact that people come up on stage with us, we’re all about engaging with the audience. We’re all about the dance. Our music is the ladies’ hips.”

The Bishops are celebrating 15 years this month. Bishop, who grew up in Noblesville, is the founder and only original member. Two members, Georgette Fraction, Indianapolis, and John Marque, Cincinnati, have been with the group eight years, and two Indianapolis residents, Roderick Johnson and Matt Ley, have been members for six years.

“We had a blast being there two years ago in the Robert Adam Room,” Bishop said. “We are there to have fun.”

Tony Award winner Alice Ripley will join the choir as a special guest soloist.

Carmel resident plays in ‘Joseph’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel resident Jen Martin has one main challenge in her two roles in Civic Theatre’s “Joseph and the Amazing theater Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Martin plays one of Jacob’s wives and also assumes a male role of one of the Ishmaelites.

“I have to be a man and I have to be hairy, so it’s not normal,” Martin said.

Martin is joined in the production by Carmel resident Matthew Altman, who also appeared in Civic’s productions of ‘Joseph’ in 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Both times, like this year, the productions were held during the holiday season. The show is set to run from Dec. 15 to Jan. 7 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“I like the athleticism of it and the symmetry,” said Altman, a 2007 Westfield High School graduate. “The energy is full-throttle all the time. It’s great. I love the music. It’s an Andrew Lloyd Webber score. We’re a family here and we get to do it on Christmas and New Year’s, too. It’s going to be fun.”

Martin said it’s fun to go to rehearsals with a small group of people.

“They are dedicated to making it clean and specific about the choreography and blocking,” Martin said. “It’s such a fun story.

It’s a story I grew up hearing in Sunday school and church. We have a country and western number. It’s not often you get to do those every show. And there is a 7 1/2-minute number at the end of the show.”

That’s where the athleticism really kicks in, Altman said.

“We get to sing and dance after doing the whole show,” Altman said.

ZCHS grad brings band to Indy

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Paul Whitacre, it was time to bring his band to the road. The first stop is back home. music Whitacre is the front man for his namesake band, Whitacre.

He is the lead vocalist and plays acoustic guitar.

“This seemed liked a good time to quickrun to Indy and solidify that fan base and show them what we’ve been up to,” said Whitacre, who moved from Zionsville to Denver in September 2016.

Whitacre is opening for JD McPherson at 9 p.m. Dec. 14 at The Hi-Fi, 1043 Virginia Ave., in Indianapolis.

Whitacre, a 2012 Zionsville Community High School graduate, has a degree in marketing from Ball State University.

“We probably have at least a hundred people at the show,” said Whitacre, referring to friends and family. “I got a social media/marketing job in Denver, but the goal for all of us is to make (the band) a career.”

Drummer Mark Cunningham said the band plays all original songs.

“We play a hybrid of folk rock and rock music,” Cunningham said.

The show will be a single release for a song, “Set Me Free.”

“We’re repurposing some of the songs I’ve written, and we’ve got 15 songs that we can go to right now, and five of those have been written as a band,” Whitacre said. “Then the solo songs I’ve written on my own have taken a new direction and format in a new genre and style.”

Whitacre said the band will take a break after the concert to focus on writing some new songs.

Les Invalides and Napolean’s Tomb Commentary by Don Knebel The Parisian landmark known as “Les Invalides” is best known for the tomb of one of France’s most famous generals. Its beginnings were much more travel humble.

In 1670, King Louis XIV ordered construction of a hospital and retirement home for French soldiers along the left bank of the Seine. The facility, originally known as “Hôtel National des Invalides” (“National Residence of the Invalids”), was built around a large courtyard suitable for military parades. When completed in 1676, more than 6,000 ailing French soldiers and veterans called it home. In 1679, a chapel was constructed on the north end of the facility. Residents were required to attend daily. King Louis soon decided that the chapel was not sufficiently elegant for him to worship with his soldiers, so he ordered construction of a new church inside the north end. The church, completed in 1708, included a dome rising 350 feet above the street, modeled on the one on St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The gilded dome, visible around Paris, is the finest dome in the city. The church became known as “Église

du Dôme (“Church of the Dome”).

When Napoleon Bonaparte died in 1821, he was buried in St. Helena, where he had been in exile for six years. In 1840, King Louis-Philippe returned Napoleon’s body to Paris and began excavating an area beneath the dome of the Church of the Dome for Napoleon’s tomb. In 1861, Napoleon’s body was placed in an enormous crypt constructed of red quartzite resting atop a green granite base. Les Invalides also houses the tombs of other French soldiers,

Avoid passive-aggressive voice Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt When it comes to writing, you should always use active voice. You should utilize active voice as often grammar guy as possible so those reading your prose will understand perfectly and clearly what you’re trying to say. including was, were, has been, have been, are and is, to name a few. Sometimes you just can’t avoid passive voice, but when you can, do it; your writing will jump off the page.

Finally, when it comes to life, you should always avoid passive-aggressive voice. I think this is more important than avoiding passive voice. I’ll provide some examples: The unicorn’s friends, instead of telling him his breath smelled like rotten mermaid eggs, opted to run away from him during a game of hide-and seek. Because I disagreed with my co-worker’s promotion, I decided to secretly submerge his stapler in Jell-O. While active voice leaves your reader with a sense of purpose and action, passive voice seems anemic and unsure of itself. Passiveaggressive voice, on the other hand, will simply cause your friends, roommates and coworkers to stop inviting you to parties where there is free cake.
