Council appoints Papa

By Sophie Pappas “ b^_WXT/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ At the Dec. 1 meeting of the Zionsville Town Council, the group unanimously named Jeff Papa as the potential interim mayor if or GOVERNMENT when the reorganization with Perry Township is authorized.

According to Papa, as interim mayor he “will not take the office of interim mayor unless there is an authorization for [me] to take office.�

Prior to the vote for interim mayor Zionsville resident Gwen Doyle took to the podium and asked the councilors if the $10,000 salary of the interim mayor will be returned to the town if the state appellate court votes against the reorganization. Papa said that in no circumstance will an interim mayor take office without the proper authorization for them to do so, and thus no salary would be paid unless the interim mayor is in office. Papa said that if the authorization to reorganize happens “well into 2015� then the salary would likely be reduced accordingly. Zionsville resident Wendy Brant asked the councilors how many of them agreed to appeal Judge Rebecca McClure’s ruling against the reorganization. “I think that you should have voted on appealing this,� she said to the councilors.

Papa said that it was in his executive right as president of the town council to move forward with the appeal. “We’ll see what the public access counselor has to say about that,â€? he said. If Papa becomes the interim mayor following a ruling in favor of the town of Zionsville, a new president for the town council will be named. As interim mayor, Papa would work alongside town manager Ed Mitro and the town council for one year until a full-time mayor is elected.Â

Town seeks expedited appeal for reorganization ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ In the trial between the town of Zionsville and the town of Whitestown, Zionsville has taken further steps to ensure the reorganization with Perry Township takes effect in January. Zionsville has now filed its appeal against Judge Rebecca McClure, along with a request to expedite the appeal. According to court documents: “this appeal arises from a trial court order holding - as a matter of first impression - that a reorganization between the Town of Zionsville and Perry Township in Boone County is unlawful under Indiana’s Government Modernization Act.�

Further, it states: “The reorganization eliminates some offices and creates others, including the office of

Mayor of Zionsville. The deadline for candidates to file for the primary election for these offices is Feb. 6, 2015. If the appeal is not resolved, voters in Zionsville and Perry Township would be disenfranchised because candidates could not be put on the ballot for offices created by the voter-approved reorganization. Indeed, the reorganization would eliminate Perry Township entirely. Until this appeal is resolved, there remains doubt about the township’s very existence...

Because a delay in the resolution of this appeal threatens to disenfranchise voters and disrupt the operation of multiple local governments in Boone County, Appellant the Town of Zionsville respectfully requests that the Court expedite briefing and consideration of this appeal.�

Cardiology award – Franciscan St. Francis Health has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2014 and is one of only 55 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. The award recognizes Franciscan St. Francis’ success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and shows the hospital has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association.

RE/MAX to expand – RE/MAX Ability Plus has announced plans to expand into the Lafayette market effective Jan. 1. The Carmel-based real estate company, owned and operated by principal broker Jimmy Dulin, will convert RE/MAX Lafayette Group into RE/MAX Ability Plus. The conversion will bring with it 36 brokers for a total number of 188 brokers assisting clients in 18 counties. RE/MAX Ability Plus operates two offices in Carmel and other locations in Zionsville, Lebanon, Fishers and Indianapolis.

Zion Nature Center programs – The Zion Nature Center has a full line up of programs available for this winter. Project FeederWatch takes place every weekend through March. Attendees will identify and count birds that visit the nature center’s feeders. Each weekend, a nature inspired ornament can be made by kids ages 6 and up for a small fee of $5. Recap of town council’s Dec. 1 meeting What happened: The town acknowledged 16 year-old Zionsville resident Weston Clark for being named a National Student Poet. Councilman Steve Mundy said Zionsville is “honored and blessed� to have outstanding youth such as Clark. Clark read his poem “South on Main.�

What it means: Clark will be a cultural ambassador for one year. In September he visited the White House and met with First Lady Michelle Obama to receive his honor.

What’s next: Clark will embark on his goal of “preventing cultural extinction,� conducting poetry and service projects across the state, and in North and South Dakota. “As national student poets we are all required to do a community service project over our term of ambassadorship,� he said.

What happened: Andrew Phelps was sworn in as a full-time firefighter with the Zionsville Fire Dept.

What it means: Phelps has been a part-time fireman and paramedic since February.

What’s next: He will join the department’s staff full-time.

Zionsville resident named chamber chairman

His resume is long, impressive and filled with all the business experience anyone needs, and he was recently elected as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce ACHIEVEMENT for 2015.

But Tom Easterday is more proud of his involvement in the Special Olympics.

Easterday and his wife Deb have been coaching for the Special Olympics in Boone County for years and despite his newly elected status, he would rather be coaching than anything. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My wife and I have coached everything from basketball to softball to track and field for Special Olympics in Easterday Boone County,â&#x20AC;? Easterday said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It can be challenging but it truly is rewarding.â&#x20AC;?

The executive vice president, secretary and chief legal officer of Subaru of Indiana Automotive was elected to his chairman position during the Indiana Chamberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fall Board of Directors meeting held in Indianapolis Nov. 6.

Easterday has been actively involved with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce for several years, having served as Vice Chairman, as a member of the Executive Committee, as Vice Chairman of the Energy Policy Committee and as a member of the Labor & Employment Policy Committee.

He has been a member of the board of directors since 1999. A bronze sculpture by Thomas Kinkade entitled Prince of Peace, Artist Proof #8 valued at $7,500 from the Thomas Kinkade Zionsville CRIME Gallery has reportedly been stolen.

According to a statement released by CV Art and Frame owner Barbara Jennings, this sculpture is â&#x20AC;&#x153;a very rare item featuring the head of Christ, covered with thorns, and only 30 Artist Proofs were created worldwide.â&#x20AC;?

The heavy bronze is just under 12 inches tall and â&#x20AC;&#x153;was simply lifted from the gallery stand.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe the theft to have occurred over the busy weekend,â&#x20AC;? Jennings stated in an email, referencing the weekend of Nov. 29, and the Christmas parade and tree lighting.

As of press time, there were no leads on who might have stolen this sculpture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have filed a police report [and] Officer Baldwin was very prompt in coming in,â&#x20AC;? Jennings stated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although we have video surveillance, we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a camera in that particular room and there was a constant flow of visitors in the gallery on Saturday. We will be looking at adding cameras in every room.â&#x20AC;?

Humane Society finds a home ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ The Humane Society for Boone County has taken ownership of a 6.2-acre building site on Perry Worth Road just south of SR PETS 267.

Donated in February by area developer Valenti-Held, the property required a number of town approvals prior to the transfer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were granted a special zoning exception that will allow us to build and we are currently finalizing the site plan with groundbreaking occurring within a few months,â&#x20AC;? said society president Mike Hancock.

C. F. Jones Group of Lebanon has signed on as project manager with Peterson Architecture of Noblesville designing the facility. â&#x20AC;?We are looking to construct the facility in a manner that allows us to expand. So, as the county grows we will grow with it,â&#x20AC;? Hancock said.

The 4,000-plus square foot facility will include a rescue and quarantine area, an exam clinic, kenneling for dogs and cats and an adoption area for meeting pets.

Final construction costs have not been announced.

Now in its eighth year of operation, the humane society relies upon area volunteers to rescue, care for and adopt Boone Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeless animals, carrying on this task without the benefit of a public shelter.

The Fur Ball held earlier this year helped launch Operation Shelter. 5X[T ?W^c^

In addition, public donations to the Operation Shelter building fund has raised almost $350,000 for shelter construction. Prior to this, shelter animals have been housed with foster families throughout the county.

The groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Fur Ball was in February.

At the time, Susan Austin of the society said the group was also hoping to find space for a dog park. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We would love to have a place for the dogs to get plenty of socialization, exercise and interaction with other animals. It makes them much better pets in the home because a happy and tired dog is a good dog,â&#x20AC;? she said.

More than 60 active volunteers in Boone County have been helping the animals up until now.

By Tonya Burton Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Iris Jordan, 10, has lived in Zionsville all her life. Upon a cursory look, Irisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; life appears to be perfect. She lives in a town that has been touted as the safest small town COVER STORY in America by the national Movoto Real Estate website.

Her family includes the loving, successful, creative two-parent-family of Christopher and Carrie-Ann Jordan. Her younger brother, Solomon, who is appropriately mischievous for his age of eight, adores her. The family dog, Levi, a beautiful Skye terrier, rounds out the picture of domestic bliss.

Additionally, Iris is gifted, displaying intelligence and emotional maturity beyond her biological years. However, according to Irisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; mother, Carrie-Ann, some of the emotional maturity may have been forced upon her as a result of the pain Iris faces daily.

At age seven, Iris was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, an umbrella term for various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that affect children under 16 years of age. According to the Arthritis Foundation of America, JIA replaces the term â&#x20AC;&#x153;juvenile rheumatoid arthritisâ&#x20AC;? and in Irisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; case, her additional diagnoses includes hypermobility syndrome and pain amplification syndrome.

Carrie-Ann calls JIA the invisible challenge. Iris has literally been shoved aside when sitting on a bench in a crowded restaurant because she appears to be an able bodied child. She has been chided as being pampered when she uses a pillow to ease the pain in her joints from sitting on a hard bench for long periods of time.

However, Iris Jordan doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want sympathy.

What Iris wants is relief from pain. She wants to be treated as much like any other child as possible. She wants to find a way to beat this childhood disease for herself and other children.

Finding the right treatment has been a tough journey. Her current treatment involves an infusion of Remicade every three weeks at Riley Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital. When her pain is particularly high, she sometimes needs intra-articular injec-

gone through in her life, she maintains a positive attitude. She makes the choice to be happy.â&#x20AC;?

To try and stay healthy, she swims and does yoga. She loves theater and to sing and dance.

Iris is a member of the Indianapolis Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choir and even auditioned for the show â&#x20AC;&#x153;Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Got Talent.â&#x20AC;?

Recently, because she is determined to try and help other children with juvenile arthritis, Iris accepted the role of the 2014 Indianapolis Jingle Bell Run/Walk Honoree. In accepting this role, Iris becomes a voice for thousands of other children who endure juvenile arthritis.

tions of steroids and lidocaine. Iris rates her daily pain as four to eight on a scale of one to ten.

Because of the complexity of her condition, she has not been free from pain for over three years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, I wake up at 7:30 and sometimes, it takes about half an hour to get out of bed because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m stiff. Then I get up and just hang out for a while before I start school,â&#x20AC;? Iris said.

She participates in a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hybridâ&#x20AC;? school program where sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeschooled for most of her classes, but attends Zionsville Middle School fifth grade to participate in music and art activities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to be a regular kid,â&#x20AC;? she said.

FROM THE BACKSHOP Sharpton tax bill only $4.5 million Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite race pimp, Al Sharpton, is at it again. After the sleazy reverend helped to incite unrest in Ferguson, Mo., in the wake of the grand-jury decision not to indict former Ferguson police office Darren Wilson, it was revealed that Sharpton, who also serves as an advisor to President Barack Obama, owes $4.5 million in federal and state tax liens. This was reported in the liberal-leaning New York Times.

Sharpton, of course, called the story â&#x20AC;&#x153;misleading and totally out of context.â&#x20AC;? Oh, sure, Al. Much has been said about why Obama would count this charlatan among his advisers. We find it hysterical that Obama actually met with the good reverend back in 2012 to have him tout the presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts in raising taxes on â&#x20AC;&#x153;the rich.â&#x20AC;?

In fact, shortly after that White House meeting, olâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Al preached the tax-hike rhetoric on his MSNBC talk show. Yes, he actually has a TV show; other than his immediate family members, we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine anyone would be watching.

We should note that despite his tax troubles, Sharpton rakes in a reported $250,000 a year from his nonprofit organization, National Action Network, which, by the way, did not file timely tax returns and used payroll taxes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; money collected from employees â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to pay operating expenses. We actually arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t surprised at all by the presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s association with Sharpton. After all, Obama, in our opinion, is the most divisive president in American history and with past friends such as Bill Ayers, co-founder of the Weather Underground, an organization known for bombing public buildings in the 1960s and 1970s, Sharpton is just another in a long line of questionable characters to associate with Obama through the years. Â&#x201C; Â&#x201C; Â&#x201C; This is precious: A U.S. Dept. of Treasury investigation concluded that previous bonuses totaling $2.8 million had gone to more than 2,800 employees found to have broken rules of conduct, including 1,100 employees who owed back taxes. Taking it personally

One strong indication of fluency in a language (or culture) is a robust command of the idiom and expressions that shortcut our daily communicative interactions. When we say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cry over spilled milk,â&#x20AC;? we are rarely talking to someone who has just become emotional at the wasting of the common dairy product. It is more likely that we are suggesting that the listener take stock of his or her situation and recognize the relative insignificance of the matter when compared to the reaction offered. In a nutshell, we are saying: Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overreact.

Our language, like most around the planet, is littered with these shorthand alternatives to communicate ideas. They help us interact more quickly even as they serve to define us as sharing a common cultural understanding and heritage.

Any among us who manages to speak more than one language will say, in multiple tongues, that understanding and correctly using the idiom not only ingratiates one to the locals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it also proves a deep commitment to word and culture.

But, do we give sufficient review to these linguistic devices? Does their simplicity belie an inherent and more sinister deception? Take for example, the common expression â&#x20AC;&#x153;to take something personally.â&#x20AC;? In a nutshell, it informs the listener that his reaction to anotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s act, omission or viewpoint should remain the focus and that the listener is shifting toward his own â&#x20AC;&#x153;feelingâ&#x20AC;? about the matter.

When we tell others to stop taking our actions personally, are we really telling them that they are not allowed to have an emotional response?

Do we have that right? If the matter is applied without regard to the person â&#x20AC;&#x201C; e.g., all employees in the plant are fired â&#x20AC;&#x201C; can we restrict oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feelings? Should we? Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t emotion an integral and important element of our humanity? Absent it, we are less.

For the past year, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve often wondered whether my first-born would lead a successful life or end up a terminal basement resident.

These thoughts were based entirely on two things: his addiction to video/computer games and his snotty attitude when asked to do something. Anything. Granted, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 16 and probably not unlike the majority of his friends.

But still, I thought Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d raised him better than his behavior has indicated.

And then, a holiday miracle. He got a job! All on his own without any provocation from either me or my husband Doo. Literally, he came home from school one day and announced, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have to go to the car wash to fill out an application. Can you drive me?â&#x20AC;?

What?! Where did this come from? Apparently his good friend has been working there for a few months and convinced my son to join the team. We discussed the interview process, found his social security card (heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real person!) and later congratulated him on his pseudo first form of employment. (Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a youth soccer referee for two years but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not quite the same thing. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve yet to see a W-2!)

In just three weeks, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen drastic changes in our little 6-foot-1 worker bee. He organizes his own rides to and from his job site, does his laundry by himself on a regular basis and actually engages his family in nondigital conversation. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even reset his social calendar to accommodate his work schedule: Last Saturday, he actually called his friend and told him not to come over; he was just too tired and needed sleep. Maybe more telling of his newfound maturity, he chose to forgo opening weekend of shotgun season, a tradition he and his dad have shared for years, to put in 18 hours of detailing cars.

My favorite moment occurred yesterday while I was on the phone with him. When I said I was just across the street at a neighborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, he replied, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be right over.â&#x20AC;? Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d received his first paycheck and was so proud of it that he couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait the two minutes it would take me to walk home to show it off. I know!

What does all of this mean? I like to think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that our baby boy will be OK. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demonstrating that if he so desires, he does possess a work ethic and the ability to make responsible choices. I guess you never really know how your kids will turn out until they actually start turning out. Luckily, we feel confident enough about this one that we can now cross him off our list of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Potential Middle-Age Basement Dwellers.â&#x20AC;? Only three more to go! Peace out.

Don’t touch that dial Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The radio in my car has been broken for quite a while. The tuner is busted and the tape in the cassette player is jammed with an HUMOR educational travel tape I have been listening to over and over again since our trip to Egypt six years ago.

I decided to treat myself to a new stereo. The prices seemed reasonable and I really wasn’t looking for many bells and whistles.

I took the car into an auto shop and waited about an hour. “All done, Mr. Wolfsie,” said Steve.

“Just read the directions and you’ll be all set.”

“Read the directions? For what? You turn on the radio and, bingo! You have music. You twist the knob to change the station. You stick your CD in the slot. What else is there to know?”

“Well, you’ll need to pair your Bluetooth with your iTunes. And sync your Pandora with your iPhone. Then link your Voice Control to the speakers by installing a pin number, which you can use to access the Internet through your USB drive and the auxiliary option.”

This is not exactly what he said, but he did use all those words. The next day, I still hadn’t cracked the code, so I went back to the store.

“Look, Steve, I am still very confused. For example, how do I get an AM station?

“Can’t help you there. No one has ever asked me that before. Did you figure out the hands-free voice control?”

“Not really. How do I do it?”

“That should be easy. Instead of dialing on your cell phone, which is very dangerous, simply talk to the microphone on your dash.”

When I got in the car, I did want to talk to my son at work, thinking maybe he could explain some of the complexities of the new stereo that still baffled me. I spoke clearly into the speaker, leaning in: “Call Brett,” I said.

“Call Brad,” the device tried to confirm.

“Brett!” I yelled back. … “Calling Burt.”

I broke out in a sweat. I was so frustrated, I needed some music to calm my nerves. Now, according to Steve, all I had to do was say the artist’s name and his songs would play.

“Play Bob Dylan,” I requested. Then I heard this: “Looking up Dylan on Wikipedia. Dylan is a singersongwriter and has been an influential figure in popular music for more than five decades.”

Geez, I didn’t want his bio. I wanted to hear him sing. At wits’ end, I screamed at my new electronics. “I CANNOT FIGURE THIS OUT. HOW DO I MAKE THIS THING WORK?” Then, a familiar voice: “The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.”

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;A Year With Frog and Toadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is back in Carmel

By Devynn Barnes Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ The holiday season is here, and there is no better way to celebrate than with live entertainment fit for a Broadway stage, THEATER right in Carmel. Actors Theatre of Indiana will present â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Year With Frog and Toad,â&#x20AC;? the Tony-nominated Broadway hit at Studio Theater at The Center for the Performing Arts this month. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Year With Frog and Toadâ&#x20AC;? is a musical based upon the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books by Arnold Lobel. It premiered in 2002 in Minneapolis and went on to have a successful stint on Broadway, earning three Tony Award nominations in 2003.

Krauter The story is about two best friends, a frog and a toad. The pair adventures together through the four seasons, laughing and celebrating their friendship all the way. The play ends in the winter during the Christmas season, reminding us all to appreciate the spirit, friendship and warmth that the holidays bring.

Kristen Merritt, the director of marketing and business development at Actors Theatre of Indiana, is excited for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production, sponsored by PNC Bank and underwritten by the Simply Sweet Shoppe. It will be the seventh production of the show in its history with the theatre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love the theme about the show,â&#x20AC;? Merritt said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so special in the way it celebrates the differences in people.â&#x20AC;?

The piece is not a traditional Christmas play; Frog and Toad go through all four of the yearly seasons, and even though the play ends with a Christmas song, the holiday theme is not dominant throughout. What makes the play so relevant during the holiday season, however, are the deeper themes of love and friendship that it presents.

According to the showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director, Judy Fitzgerald, it only makes sense that the musical runs during the holidays. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a time when you just are together and every thing seems in place and rightâ&#x20AC;Ś you look at the best in everyone,â&#x20AC;? Fitzgerald said. I think that this show is really about that.â&#x20AC;?

She said that the play has a certain magic to it, and an ability to bring joy to its viewers, a lot of which is thanks to its excellent writing and score. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine anybody seeing this show and not loving itâ&#x20AC;Ś It is so well written and the music is fantastic,â&#x20AC;? Fitzgerald said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get it out of your head.â&#x20AC;?

Though Krauter is now living in Chicago, she is returning home for the next few weeks for the production of the show. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been two years since the last time she did a show in Carmel, and she said sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happy to return. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just excited to be in my hometown doing a show and being able to spend time with my family,â&#x20AC;? she said.

She loves the message of the show as well as

its timeliness with the holiday season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This show is just a really wonderful culmination of friendship and being around your loved ones and just appreciating every moment you have with people,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what this season is all aboutâ&#x20AC;Ś loving the people around you and people coming together.â&#x20AC;?

Starring alongside Krauter is an accomplished group of actors, including Bradley Reynolds, an acclaimed Broadway performer hailing from Speedway, Ind., and Don Farrell, who has more than 200 professional production credits, in the roles of Frog and Toad.

The story has effectively jumped from â&#x20AC;&#x153;page to stage,â&#x20AC;? and will come to life in Carmel from Dec. 12-21. This year, Actors Theatre of Indiana is partnering with the Autism Society of Indiana to present a special sensory-friendly performance Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. Seats will be sold at a discounted price of $10 to families of children with autism and/or other sensory challenges. The lights will be turned up and the sounds will be turned down to make sure that everyone is able to partake in the joy that the show brings.

Spaghetti Squash Ingredients: 1 spaghetti squash, halved lengthwise and seeded. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. 1 onion, chopped. 1 clove garlic, minced.

1 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes. 3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese.

3 tablespoons sliced black olives. 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Place spaghetti squash with cut sides down on the prepared baking sheet and bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a sharp knife can be inserted with only a little resistance. Remove squash from oven and set aside to cool enough to be easily handled. Meanwhile, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onion in oil until tender. Add garlic; cook and stir until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and cook until tomatoes are warmed through. Use a large spoon to scoop the stringy pulp from the squash and place in a medium bowl. Toss with the vegetables, feta cheese, olives and basil. Serve warm. Recipe makes 6 servings.

Behind Bars: Gingerbread Coffee Ingredients:1/2 cup molasses. 1/4 cup brown sugar. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda. 1 teaspoon ground ginger. 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. 6 cups hot brewed coffee. 1 cup half-and-half cream. 1 teaspoon ground cloves. 1 1/2 cups sweetened whipped cream.

Directions: In a small bowl, mix together the molasses, brown sugar, baking soda, ginger and cinnamon until well blended. Cover and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes.

Add about a 1/4 cup of coffee to each cup, then stir in about a tablespoon of the spice mixture until dissolved. Fill cup, to within an inch of the top, with coffee. It is a recipe that is dear to our hearts especially around the holidays season.

My husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandmother used to make it for Christmas. Living on a farm she learned the true meaning of eating well and how to bring joy to the table. This is fabulous with roasted meat, poultry or fish. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be surprised to find some of your family members or even guests in your kitchen scraping off the crunchy part of the rice that sticks to the pot, â&#x20AC;&#x153;la pegaâ&#x20AC;?.

Note: Always soak the rice in water for 30 minutes. Rice has been sitting in the bag dried after milling and needs moisture. This will give enough time for rice to absorb water so that rice has a nice fluffy texture after itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cooked.

Also, drain the rice completely. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t drain thoroughly, the rice might come out all mushy.

COCA-COLA RICE Ingredients: 3 tablespoons of canola oil, 2 cups long-grain white rice, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 3 cups CocaCola, 1 cup chicken broth, 1 handful of raisins Directions: Heat the oil in a large pot over medium-high,

Remove the pot from the stove, and let it sit for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice using a fork and serve immediately.

Dec. 13, the event will offer a holiday experience for adults and children alike.

Guests can look at the creameryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas tree and enjoy the holiday decorations. Kids will have the opportunity to meet and get pictures with Santa as he sits atop his great hay bale chair. Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reindeer will also be onsite. Â â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have live music and the kids can sing along and ring the bells while they sing. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very fun and interactive,â&#x20AC;? said Gail Alden, the director of special events at the creamery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also have live elk right outside the barn and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge (bull) elk, like seven feet tall, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re beautiful and the kids just adore visiting them.â&#x20AC;?

There will also be sleigh rides throughout the property, a chance to sing Christmas carols along classic holiday tunes and take part in oldfashioned craft making in the Big Red Barn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our Big Red Barn is so beautiful that it makes this really lovely place to bring a family to enjoy the Santa Claus experience,â&#x20AC;? Alden said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of an old-fashioned Christmas.

Holiday Recipes Cheese and Spinach Puff Pastry Pockets

Candy Cane Cocoa

Ingredients: 4 cups milk. 3 (1 ounce) squares semisweet chocolate, chopped. 4 peppermint candy canes, crushed. 1 cup whipped cream. 4 small peppermint candy canes.

Directions: In a saucepan, heat milk until hot, but not boiling. Whisk in the chocolate and the crushed peppermint candies until melted and smooth. Pour hot cocoa into four mugs and garnish with whipped cream. Serve each with a candy cane stirring stick. Makes 4 (1 cup) servings.

Beef Wellington

Ingredients: 1 (2 pound) beef tenderloin. ground black pepper (optional) 1 sheet Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry.

1 egg. 1 tablespoon water. 1 tablespoon butter. 2 cups finely chopped mushrooms. 1 medium onion, finely chopped.

Directions: Place the beef in a lightly greased roasting pan. Season with the black pepper, if desired. Roast at 425 degrees F for 30 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 130 degrees. Cover the pan and refrigerate for 1 hour. Thaw the pastry sheet at room temperature for 40 minutes or until it’s easy to handle. Heat the oven to 425 degrees F. Stir the egg and water in a small bowl with a fork. Heat the butter in a 10-inch skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add the mushrooms and onion and cook until the vegetables are tender and all the liquid is evaporated, stirring often. Unfold the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll the pastry sheet into a rectangle 4 inches longer and 6 inches wider than the beef. Brush the pastry sheet with the egg mixture. Spoon the mushroom mixture onto the pastry sheet to within 1-inch of the edges. Place the beef in the center of the mushroom mixture. Starting at the long sides, fold the pastry over the beef. Place seam-side down on a baking sheet. Tuck the ends under to seal. Brush the pastry with the egg mixture. Bake for 25 minutes or until the pastry is golden and a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees F. Slice and serve warm. Makes 10 servings.

Ingredients: 12 frozen puff pastry shells, unthawed. 1 cup heavy cream. 1/4 cup whole milk. 1/2 teaspoon salt. 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. 1 (16-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry. 1 1/4 cups grated Fontina cheese. 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan. 3 to 5 green onions, finely chopped.

Directions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a heavy large baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the frozen pastry shells on the baking sheet and bake until they puff and become golden brown, about 20 minutes. Using a small knife, cut out the center of the pastry shells. Meanwhile, stir the cream, milk, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Stir in the spinach, Fontina cheese, Parmesan and green onions. Spoon the spinach mixture into the baked pastry shells. Bake until the pastries are golden brown and the filling is hot, about 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer the pastries to a platter and serve.

Eggnog Cheesecake

Ingredients: 1 cup graham cracker crumbs. 2 tablespoons white sugar. 3 tablespoons melted butter. 3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened. 1 cup white sugar. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour. 3/4 cup eggnog. 2 eggs. 2 tablespoons rum. 1 pinch ground nutmeg.

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a medium bowl combine graham cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons sugar and butter. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch spring form pan.

Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Place on a wire rack to cool. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a food processor combine cream cheese, 1 cup sugar, flour and eggnog; process until smooth. Blend in eggs, rum and nutmeg. Pour mixture into cooled crust. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 250 and bake for 45 minutes or until center of cake is barely firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and immediately loosen cake from rim. Let cake cool completely before removing the rim. Makes 1 9-inch cake.

CarDon plans for senior facility

By James Feichtner Â&#x201C; YP\Tb/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library was packed with residents from the Zionsville neighborhoods The Enclave DEVELOPMENT and Russell Lake East and West the evening of Dec. 2. A homeowners meeting was hosted by CarDon & Associates, Inc. to inform the residents of a possible rezoning of more than 25 acres of land from a rural R1 low density zone to a planned unit development.

The location is known locally as the Windhaven and Chickedee horse farms on Ind. 334, near the 850 E. intersection.

CarDon, a Bloomington-based company, is hoping to rezone the plot of land to construct a senior living community featuring cottages, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities and rehabilitation centers with the largest building being up to three stories tall.

But nearby residents have several concerns about the facility including the size of the buildings, the proximity of the neighborhoods, the population density change, the effects on sewer systems, additional traffic, waste management, lighting and alterations of the nearby pond. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the biggest concern is the three-story [building],â&#x20AC;? said neighbor Greg Phillips.

Russell Lake resident Kyle Morris said there are already sewer system problems in his neighborhood and that this PUD would â&#x20AC;&#x153;have an

impact on that.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the density,â&#x20AC;? said Enclave resident Joe Gregoline. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anybody who travels from Whitestown to Zionsville basically knows that Oak Street is at max capacity.â&#x20AC;?

Price said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our approach is always to hear the concerns early so we can address them in the proposal. I thought it was a very productive meeting. I was really happy with the fact that we had such a big turn out.â&#x20AC;?

Price said that the land is going to change, but it is just a matter of when and what is built. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think for sure that however the property is used today, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to be used for that forever so my thought is if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a project that provides a needed service, adds substantially to the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tax base and is really about as low of an impact neighbor that any subdivision could ask for, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a win, win, win,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been our experience in the past is that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to work with our neighbors and make the project part of their community.â&#x20AC;?

Aleppo: Cry for Me

Commentary by Don Knebel Before the current fighting, few Americans had heard of Aleppo, Syriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest city. That fighting is threatening to destroy one TRAVEL of the most inclusive cities in the Middle East, the ancient center of which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

At the heart of modern Aleppo is a medieval citadel atop a strategic hill inhabited for at least 5,000 years. A local legend claims Abraham raised goats on the hill and provided milk for travelers on the caravan route between the Mediterranean and Mesopotamia. From the earliest times, the hill included both fortresses and shrines to the favorite gods of the rulers of the day, from the Amorite Hadad to the Roman Zeus.

Byzantine Christians built churches in the citadel, which were converted to mosques, one named for Abraham, when Muslims conquered Aleppo in 636 A.D. Aleppoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s citadel later served as a prison for captured Crusaders. The citadel was expanded to its current configuration under Az-Zahir Ghazi, the son of Saladin who ruled Aleppo in the 13th century. During his reign, Ghazi converted the citadel into an opulent palace, complete with private baths. Later rulers enhanced city walls encompassing the citadel, the main mosque and a covered souk (market) approximately eight

After the Ottomans gained control of Aleppo, the city became an important center of international trade. Major European countries opened consulates in Aleppo, which took on a distinctly western feel while maintaining its famous souk, ancient gates and other reminders of its eastern heritage. Shakespeare referred to Aleppo in both â&#x20AC;&#x153;Macbethâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Othello.â&#x20AC;? Christians, especially from Armenia, moved to Aleppo, creating what is now the largest concentration of Christians in Syria. The active Forty Martyrs Cathedral, located in the fashionable Christian quarter, was built in 1491.

Aleppo has seen some of the fiercest fighting of the Syrian civil war, with all sides accusing the others of atrocities and indiscriminate damage to important historical sites, including the citadel and the souk. The minaret of Aleppoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main mosque, erected in 1090, was destroyed by tank fire. Unfortunately, the city named the Islamic Capital of Culture for 2006 will never be the same.

Sports, Key West beaches inspire basement remodel Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING BASEMENT: This home, located in the Village of West Clay in Carmel, was built in 2011. Although the BLUEPRINT FOR original basement was IMPROVEMENT already finished, the space was rather lackluster, according to the owner. “With my wife being from Florida and me being a sports fanatic, we tried to create a space that felt like a retro beach/sports pub.”

WET BAR: To give the bar a retro-beach look, the owners chose maple cabinets in a Dorian Gray finish along with a glass subway tile backsplash called “Glass Water” to remind them of the Key West beaches. Solid surface countertops in a Lava Rock color were chosen to complement the cabinetry and backsplash. Giving the area the desired sports pub look, the upper bar on the island features a maple wood top with a custom Chicago style rail stained in an espresso finish.

MEDIA AREA: New entertainment cabinetry was installed and stained to match the wet bar.

Interior cabinet pullouts were installed to store and easily access movies and gaming discs.

Decorative paneling was placed around the TV and stained to match the espresso finish in the bar. Floating shelves, approximately three feet long and 12 inches deep, flank the flat-screen TV showcasing the owner’s favorite movie-inspired décor items. Grass cloth wallpaper was chosen

The wainscoting was then painted a dark gray color to coordinate with the wet bar cabinetry.
