Winter weather plans in place

As the weather outside becomes frightful, school and town officials are prepared with their winter weather preparedness plans.

“It is noteworthy that our schools have only experienced a few days of closure per year (some years – none at all) in the past decade,” aside from the unusual winter of 2014, according to Zionsville Community Schools Supt. Dr. Scott Robison via email.

If school is cancelled, the first day will be made up May 27. The Indiana Dept. of Education has approved ZCS’s Robison request to utilize e-days to avoid subsequent make-up days, requiring students to complete assignments electronically during the day that school is cancelled.

Robison does not plan to have more than two consecutive days in the e-day format without face-to-face instruction.

“ZCS does not plan to become an online school district, and we believe that a face-toface day of instruction to assess and recalibrate instruction is essential,” Robison said.

In the event of a longer cancellation, makeup days may need to be added to the calendar in June. School cancellations and delays will be shared via the SchoolMessenger emergency notification system.

The Town of Zionsville has the same plans in place as previous years and salt trucks have already been on Lantz the road for the first snowfall.

safety tips To help the street department keep roads safe during snowy and icy weather: • Don’t park on streets. It’s a hassle for plow operators and leaves a mess when the cars eventually move.

• Shovel snow behind your sidewalk away from the street or on grass. Shoveling into the street dilutes the salt or washes it away, impacting what is needed to keep streets safe.

• Clear sidewalks of snow by noon on the second day of snowfall.

Santa’s mailbox – Your kids have written letters to Santa and want you to mail them. But what is Santa’s address? Earth Explorer Toys, 27 E. Pine St., has a special Santa mailbox outside the store.

Kids drop a letter to Santa in the mailbox and can receive a personalized reply back from the man himself if they include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The mailbox will be available through Dec. 24.

Haffner honored – Zionsville resident Kent Haffner placed No. 38 on the 2015 Stitches Power 75 annual ranking. The list honors equipment makers, software developers, accessory and apparel supplies and educators, among others, in the decorated apparel industry.

New ownership for airport – Eagle Creek Aviation Services has completed the purchase of Montgomery Aviation. “We evaluate each storm independently” Lantz said there must be a minimum of three inches to plow the culs-de-sac in town, because – with 167 of them – it takes longer to clear them than all of the other streets in town.

Recognizing that three inches of snow can be reasonably navigated, the streets department will leave the snow alone with one caveat: temperature.

“Arctic temperatures would make that snow difficult to drive through,” he said.

“It generally takes two to three inches on the roads before we start plowing efforts,” Lantz said.

Generally the town goes through 1,100 to 1,200 tons of salt each season, but lacks the space to store more than roughly a third of that amount.

“We have to manage our storage,” Lantz said.

Salt is reordered as needed which generally isn’t an issue. “In the most dire of winters that can become problematic,” he said, if there are weather-related delays between the supplier and Zionsville.

The town is on pothole patrol throughout the winter and will repair any reported issues as soon as possible.

Town considers options for north-south road

By Sam Elliott • news@currentzionsville.com Although its construction is likely years away, Zionsville has completed a study to assess possibilitransportation ties for a proposed north-south road connecting CR 575 and Oak Street on the west side of town.

“For many years, it was part of our thoroughfare plan and future transportation plans for Zionsville. It’s been in there since at least 2000,” said Lance Lantz, Zionsville superintendent of street/stormwater services. “The 2000 transportation plan is the oldest one I have archived.”

The town’s transportation plans were amended in 2010, resulting in the road being eliminated from the plan as a specific project and identified as a study area for the future.

“The general north-south mobility is obvious when you look at road maps and there are just very limited ways to go to the northwest portion of Zionsville where the residential areas are growing,” Lantz said. “It’s needed now and its need will only increase in the future.”

At their northern points, all three options would begin at the intersection of CR 575 S and CR 875 E. Two alternates, one needing a bridge to cross a small stream, would connect to Oak Street at CR 850 E. Alternate 3 would create a new intersection on Oak Street to the east of CR 850 E. “That would be kind of a drawback to Alternate 3 because it introduces another intersection on a busy street,” Lantz said.

“There is nothing imminent on this project that the town is going to initiate,” he added. “One of the purposes of having a transportation plan or any future land planning exercise is so that at such time as development comes into the area — there is one very large property there — if that property would ever happen to be sold to a developer, that is when we have the approved transportation plan to force them to install a roadway network that is in support of our plan. It helps the town with its planning and approval processes in the future when we have these identified routes available to developers.”

Free course teaches teens driving safety

By Audrey Bailey • news@currentzionsville.com The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville is one of only two clubs in Indiana offering a course to help teens learn boys & girls club how to drive safely before they ever get behind the wheel of a car.

The club has partnered with the UPS Foundation to offer the Road Code program, a free, three-hour driving safety course that Sanford includes trained instructors, videos and a driving simulator. The next class will be offered Dec. 21 at the club’s east campus, 1575 Mulberry St. “It’s a wonderful program to not just teach kids how to be a driver, but how to be a safer driver,” said Glenn Sanford, unit director at the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville-East.

Two driving simulators at the club allow teens to learn the difference between good and bad driving habits in a safe environment.

“There’s an impaired driving program that shows you what it’s like to be under the influence of alcohol and try to operate a motor vehicle,” Sanford said. “There are delayed re-

sponse times and over-calculation on steering and things like that.”

The UPS Foundation has been working with the Boys & Girls Club of America since 2009 to develop the program.

“The UPS Foundation, their experience is more with the technical side of things, where the Boys & Girls Club has the experience with how to best reach young people. So it was a great partnership that way,” Sanford said.

In order for this program to continue being

offered, Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville must continue filling classes and fulfilling grant requirements, which has not been a problem so far.

“Currently, we’re still under that test cycle.

The first test cycle of it was only three years long, and it was to see who was able to meet their grant requirements,” Sanford said. “And our club was one of the fortunate ones to not only reach that goal, but to exceed it.”

Arc program matches workers, jobs

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Adam Masten has big dreams.

The 25-year-old Zionsville resident is a part of the Arc of Greater Boone nonprofit County’s new community membership program and job connection program, which works with businesses such as Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, Goodwill and OmniSource to match people with disabilities to employers. Through the Arc program, Masten found a position working at Lowe’s. But it’s his connection with horses that seems to mean the most to him.

“My hopes for the future are to be in the Olympics and win a gold medal,” Masten said.

Masten, whose father is a horse trainer, started riding at the age of 4.

Expressing to his father that he wanted to learn to jump horses, Masten began riding lessons on a 42-year-old pony. When he was 13 he participated in his first horse show, placing first, second and third in various classes.

He learned to jump a few years later, and received a blue ribbon in his first opportunity to compete in a jumping division.

The Arc of Boone County features a variety of programs which help persons with disabilities become part of their community, such as the job connection program, which is growing.

“We have a brand new staff,” said Marcia Clutter, community relations director for the Arc of Boone County. “They’re really making a big effort right now to get in touch with employers and expand the program.”

Masten shared his love for horses with the newly created community membership program, which pairs a participant with a staff member to together participate in community activities such as book clubs, shopping and library visits.

“My advice to everyone,” Masten said, “is if you have dreams, you need to work hard and go after them!”

Credit cards are everywhere Commentary by Ward Degler When we got home from vacation a couple weeks ago, I unburdened my pockets and dumped all the credit card plain talk receipts on the desk. These crumpled slips of paper offered a record of just about everything we spent. Everything from gas, meals and groceries to a couple boxes of mints and bottled water at a convenience store in rural Georgia.

I still had most of the cash I had started with. Actually, it wasn’t much to begin with.

We used the credit card for everything.

When I was a kid we used to spy on old Mr. Warner when he bought something at the store or had lunch at the café. He would pull out a wad of money that would literally choke a horse. I think it was a point of pride for people in town to understand that Mr. Warner could afford to buy just about anything. He already owned several businesses, and the joke was he wouldn’t quit until he bought the town streets and everybody had to pay him to drive on them. I remember converting my paper route money to singles so I could imitate Mr. Warner.

Credit cards got started in 1900 with the oil companies – sort of an early version of today’s gas cards. It wasn’t until 1946 that a Brooklyn banker got the idea of issuing an actual credit card. The rub was, you had to have an account at that bank to get the card.

And, you could use it only at businesses that

were customers of the bank.

Diners Club showed up four years later, and by 1951 the company sported 20,000 cardholders. The cards themselves were paper until Diners issued the first plastic cards in 1961.

American Express had been issuing money orders since 1850 and finally got into the general credit card business in 1958. The problem with both Diners and American Express was cardholders had to pay them off every month.

The revolving balance card started in 1966 with BankAmericard. After a few short years a consortium of banks joined with Bank of America to form the Visa Assn. MasterCard wasn’t far behind. And in 1987 American Express issued its first revolving balance card.

Everybody including the family dog has credit cards today. It’s interesting to note that MasterCard world headquarters is in the small town of Purchase, N.Y. And I’m sure Mr. Warner would still enjoy showing off his wealth today by pulling out a gigantic stack of credit cards.

Purdue gift guide promotes engineering gifts for kids

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Purdue’s INSPIRE Research Institute has put together its second annual guide of nearly 90 educational toys, books holidays and applications that help promote STEM - science, technology, engineering and math. INSPIRE’s focus is examining how children learn engineering as well as providing teacher resources and guides.

Zionsville’s Earth Explorer Toys on Pine Street has copies of the guide and sells many of the selected toys throughout the year.

The items in the gift guide had to pass certain criteria to make the cut: fun for kids, educational, reasonable price point and promoting engineering and design. Also important were toys that promote activities like coding and those that appealed to both boys and girls.

Among the top toys are the Osmo Game System, with a pack of tools to use with an iPad, and Puzzlets, which teaches coding using either an iPad or Android device. Both of the toys can grow with the kids and offer challenges as they age and learn.

“Even 5-year-olds can learn something with

coding,” said Monica Cardella, Purdue professor and director of INSPIRE. Also popular during their research were K’nex Mighty Makers building sets. The femalefriendly line encourages the use of blueprints and plans with building and creativity.

“When girls are helping people, they’re more engaged and learning more,” said Elizabeth Gajdzik, assistant director for INSPIRE. “They want to make it for a purpose,” Cardella said.

More detailed information about each of the toys is available on the website.

“We’ll have explanations about how each of these toys promote engineering, thinking and design,” Gajdzik said.

This year, all of the toys were given a “Purdue University Gift Guide 2015” seal of approval to use on packaging or on their website.

The guide can be found online at inspirepurdue.org/EngineeringGiftGuide and offers advice to promote STEM learning and discusses engineering with children.

“We’ve taken our research and translated it into something that’s more open for parents,” Cardella said.

Pitman-Moore helped save hogs

By Terri Horvath • news@currentzionsville.com Before global manufacturers Dow AgriSciences, DowElanco or Elanco Animal Health moved into the back in the day state, there was the Pitman-Moore Company, a manufacturer of animal health products just southeast of Zionsville.

Two years under construction, PitmanMoore was built on the former Moore farm with an operational facility completed in 1914.

The company sprung up in response to the rise of cholera in hogs. Thousands of hogs died annually because of the disease, clearly a crisis for the nation’s farmers. Pitman-Moore took on the responsibility of manufacturing a serum to combat the outbreak.

According to an Indianapolis Star article on Oct. 3, 1914, Pitman-Moore is “without an equal

in point of cleanliness and scientifically prepared serum.” In fact, the company was the “only one in the country making commercial serum, which is equipped with a complete bacteriological laboratory.” Seven separate buildings comprised the complex plus pens for the hogs. Add the land planted for corn, and the complete complex measured 53 acres.

The newspaper proclaimed that Pitman-Moore was the “start of a new industry in the state.”

Harry C. Pitman led the company as president.

By 1915, he became well-known as a leading expert on the cholera serum. Eventually the company expanded into making other products.

Pitman-Moore’s offerings eventually were folded into the mix of Elanco, which was formed by pharmaceutical manufacturer Eli Lilly and Company in 1954. From there, through mergers and buy-outs, Dow AgroSciences planted itself on the current site.

Zionsville couple turns trash into treasure

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Home decorating is a uniquely personal experience for every individual. Tastes, preferences and style all play a role.

Airs & Graces in Zionsville hopes to help tailor one-of-kind finds to fashion homes in the area. The cover story business, owned by Doug and Dawn Rapp, sources local reclaimed items with the intent of getting them back into the hands of the community.

“Airs & Graces was a concept that my wife, who is an interior designer, and I came up with – kind of a collaborative idea,” Doug said.

The Rapps got started sourcing salvage materials accidentally after Doug purchased some architectural letters for friends in the vintage industry.

“It turns out they wanted about 100 of them, and I ended up with about 250 leftover,” he said. “I put a picture up on Facebook, and I started getting a bunch of calls immediately. It all just kind of fell into place.”

The Rapps focus on architectural salvage and reclamation.

“We try and take anything that is old, industrial or vintage and get it back out in the hands of people who appreciate it,” Doug said. “It might be anything from a fireplace mantle to a piece of old science equipment to an architectural letter to an antique train. Things that we find that would normally end up in a landfill somewhere, we try and keep those things out of the landfill and get them back out to people.”

Airs & Graces subscribes to a few core values when it comes to business.

“We live by a couple of principles, and the first is it shouldn’t cost more to do the right thing,” Doug said. “When we look at recycling or upscaling, our philosophy is that we want to get things back out to people as cheaply as possible so it’s not cost prohibitive.

“It never made sense to us that you would have to pay a premium for something that was reclaimed,” he added. “We keep things as low in cost as possible so people will use

things more readily. The other (principle) is that we believe that every object has a history to it, and we try and tell that story with every piece that we sell.”

Doug, who soon plans to retire from the military, has plans to involve other veterans in the business.

“We’d like to expand into more partnerships utilizing more veterans. Being a disabled veteran myself, I want to be able to offer jobs and mentoring opportunities to veterans,” Doug said.

“We also want a partnership with educational organizations, whether it’s partnering with Zionsville Community Schools to teach children about re purposing or salvaging or taking care of the environment.”

The name is a play on the phrase “putting on airs and graces.” Doug said his company was meant to be tongue in cheek. They’re not putting on airs and graces with what they are – the self-proclaimed junk dealers of Zionsville.

Ring in 2016 at Palladium

The easy button

The office supply giant Staples is well into an advertising run extolling the ease with which we can order, restock and manage our need for paper, pens and printer ink refills. In the campaign, various users are imagined to be confronted with an office supply dilemma and they push a big red “easy” button wherein the problem is instantly resolved and the challenge is successfully confronted. The ads have proven so successful that the retailer is now offering mock-ups of the easy button at its stores. And, they are selling quite well.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have such a device? Whenever we are confronted with the travails of ordinary adult life, we could simply push the button and all would be made simple. Sipping a cup of coffee while reviewing this column would have required extraordinary effort only a few generations ago. Getting the coffee was almost impossible. Then, heating it required the collection of wood and the tending of the fire.

Today, we push a button and Nespresso delivers a perfect, steaming cup from coffee delivered to our doors. We could call it the easy button.

If life can be tamed from chaos to sublime by the mere press of finger, what other annoyances might we relegate to buttondom?

Is the television remote control a device that we can use to remove us from irritating or offensive humans? Can we click “delete” on our computers to retire email that complicates or mires our lives? Is it possible that the “easy” button is already there but that we don’t make use of it?

Sure, an office supplier cannot solve all of our problems with an imaginary button.

But, it can show us that the solution to many of our worries is already available if we simply know to take action.

Low expectations, my friends. That’s what we all need to have heading into the Christmas festivities if we are humor to survive the next few weeks.

Don’t plan the perfect dinner, don’t anticipate a healthy household and don’t count on content children. You can hope for the best, sure, but only if you expect the worst will you guarantee yourself a satisfactory holiday season.

Thanksgiving provided a good test site for my new underachieving mantra. Because the Wilson family six-pack would be staying with my parents, I knew I wouldn’t be sleeping much and that downtime would be at a premium. I also understood that the 2015 turkey feast would comprise of an unusual hodge-podge of relatives, including an 86-year-old ex-dancer on oxygen, my sister’s new boyfriend, and two sets of uncles and aunts whom I only see once a year. And, just to make things a little more interesting, none of my other three sisters would be there with their spouses to provide conversation buffering and/or assistance.

Needless to say, my expectations of an ideal Thanksgiving were extremely low. So when my youngest’s cold turned into a marathon fever and cough fest, it was honestly no big deal. When my dad and sister cheated on our pledge to wait and see “Mockingjay” together, I rolled with it. And when Aunt Doris the Dancer regaled us with tales of teaching ballroom lessons after working all day at the American Tobacco Company, I was extraordinarily entertained. Overall, a pretty nice Thanksgiving.

With Christmas and New Year’s approaching, I am now prepping myself for more illness, disappointed teenagers, dog intestinal issues and at least one person over-imbibing at some party. I’m also planning on rain, a power outage, a minimum of two tree disasters and an impressive argument with my husband Doo. Maybe I’ll get lucky this year and none of these potential holiday derailments will come to fruition. But if they do, they won’t be ruining my holidays. Why? Because I’m expecting the worst, and therefore can only be pleasantly surprised. I suggest you do the same. Peace out.

The Hot Sardines bring unique jazz blend to New Year’s Eve

“We have a love affair with all cover the pop music from the first half of the last century,” singer Elizabeth Bougerol said. “We play jazz that goes back as early as the 1910s and goes as late as the 1950s. It’s old music but we’re definitely playing it in 2015.”

Bougerol, known as Miz Elizabeth, and Evan “Babs” Palazzo are the co-founders of the group. The Hot Sardines will be the featured performers at New Year’s Eve at the Palladium.

“This music has a lot of spirit and there is something a little magical about New Year’s Eve,” Bougerol said. “It will be fun way to ring in 2016. We believe music should move you and we have a lot of love for the early days of jazz and American popular song. Those are the two points on the map. We’re playing music and we’re on a stage. The tap dancer is not just a percussionist. He’s a visual part of the show. You don’t hear this kind of jazz too often any more. This is sort of our Valentine to the songs of that era and the joy of playing them live for audience.“ Bougerol said their live performances are always evolving.

“You are never going to play the same song (the same way) twice,” she said. “There is a lot of fertile ground between 1900 and 1950 so we’ve definitely evolved in terms of adding more repertoire and bigger arrangements.

with. We’re constantly finding new material from the first half of the last century. We’ve only begun to scratch the surface.”

Bougerol and Palazzo met at a jazz jam in 2007 that was advertised on Craigslist. Bougerol said they connected musically right away with many of the same loves.

“There were a lot of the same people that we musically admired,” Bougerol said. “We never intended to start a band. Each of us was just trying to find one other person to

explore this love of music with.”

Bourgerol and Palazzo were not professional musicians at the time.

“He had taught himself piano, and I sang mostly in the shower,” Bougerol said. “I had done one or two high school musicals, but beyond that, I never sang outside my apartment.”

The other members of the band were all trained musicians.

“We learn so much from them every day,” she said.

CIDE to perform ‘Nutcracker’ at ZPAC

By Audrey Bailey • news@currentzionsville.com For two Sugar Plum fairy dancers, Eva Highberg and Ashley Melcho, the goal of any ballerina is to make things look as easy as possible. dance “I think one of the rules as a ballerina is to make everything look effortless, and to make it look so beautiful and enchanting,” Highberg said. “So, that’s the hardest part, in addition to doing all the hard work and technical things, is to make it look so effortless.”

So, with enchantment and beauty in mind, The Central Indiana Dance Ensemble (CIDE), a pre-professional dance ensemble and resident company of The Center for the Performing Arts, will be presenting its upcoming performance of the Nutcracker on Dec. 11, 12 and 13 at Zionsville Performing Arts Center.

CIDE has been putting on productions of the Nutcracker for 16 years, and according to Suzann DeLay, CIDE’s Artistic Director, the ballet has been largely refined over the years.

That being said, this season, the ballet will be adding a variety of new components, as well.

“This year we have re-choreographed most of the ballet,” DeLay said. “So, we have new costumes, the Battle Scene (Act 1) is new, the

Waltz of the Flowers is all new, and most of the variations in the second act are new.”

In addition to revamping the choreography, CIDE has also welcomed several guest artists who will be performing familiar roles in the Nutcracker.

Co-hosts continue Beef & Boards tradition

In actuality, they are partners in Christmas cheer. Wims and Shepard serve as co-hosts of “A Beef and christmas Boards Christmas.” It’s the 17th show for Wims and 22nd for Shepard, who calls it “our Christmas tradition.”

“Kenny is one of my oldest and dearest friends,” said Wims, an Indianapolis resident. “I’ve known him since I was 19 years old. It is such a special show for me.”

“A Beef & Boards Christmas” will run through Dec. 23.

“When I started doing the show, I lived in New York, and I wanted an excuse to come home for the holidays because I grew up in Indianapolis,” said Shepard, a Fishers resident. “I moved back here 12 years ago. It’s (the show) like a second family. It’s a nice little reunion.”

Wims said the show is always a little bit different each year.

“But it’s very traditional that when people come, there are some things that can count on seeing or hearing,” Wims said.

Shepard and Wims do several song-and-dance numbers together in this, and usually do two or three other musicals a year together.

“This is my favorite time of year and my favorite thing to do at Beef & Boards,” Wims said.

One of the highlights of the show for the audience and cast members is the rich powerful voice of Kendra Lynn Lucas, who sings several favorites such as “Let it Snow.”

Shopping for a tailgater

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley This is the season when we begin to struggle with our shopping lists and invitations, aggravated by December’s iffy weather. We need to remind ourselves there are people in our lives who are worth this trouble, and people to whom we are worth the same. Think about that tailgater on your list. We’re writing about the guy/gal on your list with a smile almost as broad as his or her heart. The one who is generous to a fault, making sure every guest and even occasional passersby gets something to eat and drink.

There are two ways to shop for a real tailgater. First is the practical way, which is finding some piece of equipment you think he or she wants.

The second way to shop is to buy something extravagant that can be enjoyed by any tailgater at any time. I always like the chocolate candy items that are a bit unusual but useful at any time of the year, especially Christmas. Sure one might see them at a tailgate party, but they are great at a Christmas or New Year’s party or any gathering when one wants to serve something special.

The South Bend Chocolate Company has collegiate-licensed chocolate candy for both Notre Dame and IU fans. There are chocolate dome-shaped truffles called Domers. Easy Bourbon Balls (Submitted by a reader from Kentucky) Ingredients: • 1 lb. vanilla wafers, crushed • 2 cups walnuts, chopped • 2 tbs. cocoa • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar • 3 tbs. light corn syrup • 4 oz. bourbon Preparation: Mix together crushed wafers, chopped nuts, cocoa and sugar. In a separate bowl mix corn syrup and bourbon together, then gradually add to crumb mixture. Shape into balls the size of small walnuts and roll in confectioners’ sugar, then chill overnight. This recipe will yield up to five dozen balls - proceed with caution.

Put lid on, bring rice to a simmer and cook until water evaporates, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat, and let it rest for 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Accounting Solutions Plus owner finds home in Zionsville

Jessica Brockway had run her business out of her Lebanon home for six years.

Now her company has found new biz a home in Zionsville.

“We wanted to feel we were part of a small business community,” Brockway said. “The Zionsville Village definitely gave us that. It just felt like this is home.”

Accounting Solutions Plus had its grand opening in late September at 88 N. First St. “We’re not a stuffy accounting firm,” Brockway said. “We do financial management, financial coaching and we also do bookkeeping. We do controllership and financial analysis.”

Brockway said she has seen her business expand since the office opened.

“More people being aware of the business helps,” Brockway said. “The grand opening helped a lot and just curiosity. We’re in a pretty high traffic area. We did the office in a pretty cool, funky way. Again not your typical accounting firm. I think that’s brought it a lot of curiosity.”

The office is open Monday through Friday.

Brockway had previously done accounting for small businesses. Born in Lebanon, she is a Lebanon High School and Kaplan College graduate.

Brussels’ Fountain of Youth Commentary by Don Knebel Many first-time visitors to Brussels, Belgium, immediately seek out its most famous symtravel bol, a statue named “Manneken Pis,” Dutch for “little boy pee.” This irreverent two-foot-tall statue may explain why Brussels is often called the “Capital of Europe.”

No one knows when the first statue of a naked boy urinating into a basin was first erected two blocks southwest of Brussels’ Gothic town hall. References to a stone statue in that location appear as early as 1450. Numerous legends attempt to explain why such a statue would have been erected, some claiming a little boy relieving himself miraculously saved the city. What is known is that a local sculptor replicated the stone statue in bronze in 1619. In the ensuing nearly 400 years, Manneken Pis has been stolen repeatedly, most recently in the 1960s, after which the recovered statue was placed in a Brussels museum and a replica installed in its place.
