Although Zionsville has one of the largest Chinese programs in the state, Jiang isn’t satisfied and wants the program to continue to grow. She tries to keep students engaged with field trips to learn tai chi and visit Chinese restaurants and Asian markets.

The native of China returned to her country last summer to teach with the IU Honors program. She hopes to continue that opportunity again this summer, but it’s dependent on enrollment.

Sewer rate to remain unchanged

Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Town Council met Nov. 28 to discuss the wastewater department budget and internal controls to help reduce the risk of fraud.

What happened: The council approved the 2017 wastewater department and utility budget.

What it means: The approved budget is 6.5 percent bigger than last year’s and does not include an increase in the sewer rate. Additional funds are expected to be generated by the approximately 800 new homes to be added to the town’s sewer system in the coming years. The budget also includes a new collections operator position added in anticipation of future growth.

What’s next: Upcoming wastewater projects include bank stabilization and added security at the wastewater treatment plant.

What happened: The council unanimously approved an ordinance adopting internal control standards for the town.

What it means: The State Board of Accounts requires that municipalities adopt internal control standards, which include policies to reduce the risk of fraud, theft and errors. It also is designed to provide procedures to help the town run efficiently.

What’s next: The ordinance passed on final reading and is now in effect.

ZCS expecting big growth

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Within the next 10 years, Zionsville Community Schools is anticipating an increase of 2,000 students, about 200 education students each year, according to a projection by the Indiana Business Research Center.

The projection was presented to the ZCS school board at its Nov. 14 meeting.

Pleasant View, the district’s largest elementary school, could reach nearly 800 students in the next decade with the high school having 2,600 students by 2025.

“Growth has really continued (in Zionsville) even with the Great Recession and the aftermath of those difficulties,” said Matt Kinghorn, spokesperson for the IBRC. “Suburban areas in Indiana and around the country have experienced a slowdown in population growth.”

The same group projected enrollment in 2013 for the current school year. When showing a comparison of its past projection to reality, it was off by 22 students, a negligible difference with 6,418 students in the school district.

Roughly 70 percent of the development has occurred in the Boone Meadow and Union Elementary School districts, with nearly 1,300 single-family homes approved for future devel-

opment throughout Zionsville.

The high school recently nearly reached capacity but underwent an expansion in 2014 to make room for an additional 400 students.

According to IBRC estimates, ZCHS is expected to be at 95 percent capacity during the 202122 school year, which would be an increase of 700 students.

“What sorts of facility needs are we going to have in the future to house all those new students that are obviously heading our way?” Shafer said. “The existing facilities, how are we going to take care of those? We’re looking at these two prongs simultaneously.”

Shafer said the tax rate can be preserved with certain actions by the school board, which he plans to present at the school board’s public hearing Dec. 12.

dispatches Fire Department toy drive – The Zionsville Fire Dept. is collecting toys for the annual Boone County Toy Drive. Donations will be accepted at all three fire stations and the headquarters office in the town hall building.

Items being collected include toys and electronics for children, clothing for all ages, food and money. Items are collected year round but must be received the week before Christmas to be delivered by the holiday.

Advent concerts – Christ Lutheran Church’s Advent Concert Series will feature Advent services at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Each service will feature music, meditation and refreshments. Sanctuary opens doors for a day

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com After receiving updated exterior paint and a new roof, the Sanctuary on Main Street will open Dec. 10 for a moving sale art of Nancy Noel’s art and serve as an open house to potential buyers of the building, listed at $1.65 million.

“I think having the exterior renovated is going to make a big difference,” realtor Tammy Keller said. “It’s so beautiful. I think people saw the exterior and assumed the interior was not as completely renovated as it is.”

The 10,800-square-foot Sanctuary was built in 1894 and served as the Methodist Episcopal Church. The building served as a church for more than a century and was most recently a gallery for Zionsville-based artist Nancy Noel.

Noel renovated the interior in 2008 after purchasing it. In 2013 the lower level and first floor kitchen underwent a major renovation.

The kitchen equipment, cafe furniture and a three-way liquor license are all included with the property.

Noel said the popularity of the event space was a big reason she decided to sell the building to focus on painting.

events there instead of my art,” she said.

The Sanctuary will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with many new works of art along with discounted existing inventory. Noel will be on site to meet art lovers and sign pieces.

“It’s kind of the sale of a lifetime if you want one of my pieces,” said Noel, who concedes that this might be the last time she’s able to sell her artwork in the Sanctuary.

“We should make good use of the space while we’re here,” Noel said.

Now is the time to manage homes and property to prevent wildlife damage that often comes with spring. wildlife Mother raccoons are searching for nesting spots to raise their young. This can be in chimneys, crawl spaces, attics, soffit, facia, haystacks, brush piles, barns, abandoned buildings, abandoned cars or large metal auto parts or sheeting. A four-inch diameter hole is all that is needed for a raccoon to squeeze through.

Natural dens are hollow trees or ground burrows.

Most litters are born between April and May, with some appearing as early as late February. Litters are between two and five young, and they are weaned between two and four months.

Check your chimneys and roofs now to prevent damage later. Install a proper chimney cap and repair any loose shingles or soffits.

Put a bell-like skirt of flashing around the tops of drain pipes to deter animals from climbing up to the roof. Cut down overhanging tree branches or bushes that are near houses or barns. Take down trellis or piping

for vines that are near buildings. A three-foot square sheet of slick metal can be nailed to corners of out-buildings to prevent climbing access. Hardware cloth can be nailed to decks or patios to prevent raccoons from going underneath.

If this prevention fails or is not initiated, humane live traps can be put outside to trap the mother (remember, there are probably babies there so wait before taking the mother away). Check the hole carefully to hear any rustlings or soft noises denoting babies present and proceed to remove them or hire an animal nuisance company to complete the job. Repair the hole and release the mother at night and in sight of the container of babies.

She usually will have a secondary hiding spot and will take her babies with her if given time and quiet.

Please use common sense with wildlife.

They are only looking for a chance to live out their lives, too.

Commentary by Brad Thompson Not everyone has the opportunity to go to a traditional prom.

“Most adults have had a glamorous night where we’ve felt like a star: weddings, first dates, dances, etc. More often than not, this community has not had that,” said Wendy Wilken, special needs director at Traders Point Christian Church.

“The church’s goal is to reach a community that is often forgotten about by the church and to show families that the church loves them and their adult children,” she added.

As an act of love, TPCC annually provides adults with special needs an opportunity to go to prom, free of charge. Now in its third year, the church held the Our Starry Night Prom on Nov. 11 at its Whitestown facility.

About a month prior to the event, church members shop with guests for their prom attire. On the day of the party, each guest is assigned a chaperone who helps them in any way needed. Guests have the choice as to what to do, but often they go to the beauty spa where they can get their nails, makeup and hair done. The gym is turned into a restaurant where waiters and waitresses serve a meal at any time during the evening. There is a game room filled with everything from bingo to hockey. My long-lost Mercury dime Commentary by Ward Degler I just found a 1941 Mercury head dime. No big deal, really, since old coins often show up in change. plain talk Except this one recalled a special memory for me.

The year was 1941, it was the middle of December, and my 6-year-old roots had recently been shaken to the core.

A few days earlier, Dec. 7, Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor and America was suddenly at war. I didn’t know what that meant except I expected enemy soldiers to come marching up our road in the North Woods of Wisconsin at any moment.

Worse, my dad had a commission in the U.S. Army and had just been called up to get his physical. My mom cried a lot over the next few days, and I fretted and stewed. I think I offered a few pretty mixed up prayers as only a frightened first grader might do.

Then, magically, a soft wave of peace rolled over our little home. Dad’s ulcers kept him out of the service, and the Japanese Army never reached our shores, much less the snowy woods of Wisconsin.

And I lost a tooth. It was one I had been wiggling around with my tongue for several days. Then, it suddenly popped out.

That night I put the tooth under my pillow, and in the morning found it replaced by a shiny new dime — a real treasure for a kid

who had launched into life in the middle of the Great Depression. Even a dime was a lot of money in those days.

That same morning, while I was sitting at the breakfast table eating oatmeal with one hand and clutching my dime with the other, my dad walked through the door with a sixfoot Norway spruce he had cut just a hundred yards from our back door – our Christmas tree.

Somehow, it didn’t matter that all our Christmas decorations had been packed and shipped away in anticipation of dad’s entry into the war. We strung popcorn and cranberries into long ropes and looped them through the branches. I cut and glued strips of colored paper into chains. Mom made decorations out of buttons from her sewing basket, and dad took the tinfoil wrapper from a pack of cigarettes and fashioned a star for the top.

Our home was safe, the tree was decorated for Christmas, and I had a dime to call my own. We even sang Christmas carols. I didn’t know the words, and dad sang so far off key that the melody was lost. Mom thought it was funny.

Somehow, I lost that dime. One day it just wasn’t there, and I never found it. Until today.

Community split on ZCS decision to add random drug testing in 2017

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Zionsville will no longer be the only high school in its conference to not conduct random drug tests. cover story The school board concluded a nearly fourhour meeting Nov. 28 by voting in favor of implementing random drug tests at Zionsville Community High School beginning in the fall of 2017. The 3-2 vote came after the board gathered feedback from a panel of experts, who spoke mostly in favor of random drug tests, and the public, who spoke mostly against it.

School board member Debbie Ungar and board President Shari Alexander Richey, who called the meeting and was visibly torn about the decision, voted against the proposal.

Board Vice President Jane Burgess joined Jim Longest and Joe Stein in supporting the measure.

“Consequences definitely do make a difference,” Burgess said. “As adults, you sometimes opt to not have that second glass of wine because of the possibility of a DUI, and you don’t want to take that chance. The same thing works for kids.”

Several members of the audience disagreed, citing studies claiming that random drug testing makes little difference, if any.

“My fear is random drug testing is us feeling like we’re doing something without actually doing anything,” said Michael Berg, a Zionsville resident who works at a high school and has been involved with substance abuse counseling. “In public health, that is the worst thing you can do.”

drugs, such as opiates, which flush out of the system faster than others, such as marijuana.

Some worried that it would destroy trust between students and teachers, while others said it should not be the role of schools.

“As a parent this is an invasion that steps over that line and into parenting responsibilities,” said Zionsville resident Jeff Price, adding that he doubted the policy would deter many students.

Supporters included ZCHS football coach and teacher Pat Echeverria, who said players he’s coached have indicated random drug testing serves as a strong deterrent.

“If we can … give (students) some ammunition to say no to a friend who is trying to peer pressure them, then I think we’re doing the right thing as a school board and as a community,” he said.

Attendees on both sides of the issue shared stories of how drug abuse had impacted their families, including several school board members.

All of the school board members agreed that random drug testing is only part of the solution. They spoke in support of implementing a long-term holistic approach to preventing drug use. Zionsville Community Schools has been developing a program called Stronger in Every Way to do just that.

Now that the school board has voted to implement random drug testing, district officials will work to craft specifics of the policy.

It is expected to be based off of a proposal developed in 2014, the first time the board broached the issue and subsequently tabled it for more than two years. The school board will review the proposed policy at an upcoming meeting, and it is expected to be finalized and approved by April 2017.

ZCS Supt. Scott Robison said random drug testing is expected to cost between $3,000 and $5,000 annually. Students eligible for the tests are those involved in extracurricular activities or privileges such as sports or parking on school property.

Details of the proposed policy The policy proposed in 2014 includes the following points: • Students expecting to drive, park on school grounds or participate in any extracurricular activities (including dances and prom) throughout the school year must enroll for random drug testing to be eligible.

• The policy doesn’t replace the district’s right to test any student who exhibits cause for reasonable suspicion of drug and/or alcohol usage.

• Parents may opt to enroll their students in the random drug testing program if they don’t already qualify, but

they may not opt out.

• A table of random numbers will be used to assign numbers to participants, and a random mathematical formula will be used to select students for testing.

• Parents may request a drug test for their teen but must pay for it.

• If tampering or cheating during the test is confirmed, the student will become ineligible for all extracurricular activities for the remainder of the school year.

• The school principal or designee will be notified of a

positive test and will notify the student and his or her parents and provide information on counseling and assistance.

• Students must enroll and participate in an approved counseling program to regain participation privileges.

• Students on a sports team will be suspended from 25 percent of contests after a first positive test and 50 percent of contests after a second. Students will lose parking, driving and extracurricular activities for 30 days after a first positive test and 60 days following a second.

Don’t ditch the college That the United States is not a direct democracy where decisions are decided by popular vote is a dilemma for Democrats who are unhinged over Donald Trump’s Electoral College win. The drive for recounts is under way. Besides the left’s recount temper tantrum, Republican Electoral College members across the U.S. report harassment and threats from disgruntled Clinton supporters in a last-ditch effort to put their candidate, Hillary Clinton, who should be in the big house, in the White House.

One report says a young Michigan elector, Mike Banerian, received a message “containing a death wish” and another, “a death threat” in which someone threatened they’d “put a bullet” in his mouth. Banerian said he’s been called “a hateful bigot” and said, “people talk about shoving a gun in my mouth and blowing my brains out” - if he abides by Michigan law requiring electors to vote for Trump. Democrat leadership would be wise to detach itself from these whack jobs. These despotic dimwits don’t give a whit that America’s founders created the Electoral College to prevent that kind of mob-rule democracy, which will happen if a few big cities and states always control the outcome. Given all the talk about ditching the Electoral College, fair representation is the last thing on the minds of those who didn’t mind it at all when polls predicted a Clinton electoral landslide. Truth is, if they really cared about fairness, they’d ditch the Super Delegates system, which was rigged for Hillary when it robbed Bernie Sanders early on. That’s why we need the Electoral College, which serves to prevent voting fraud in certain areas from tainting a whole election.

The truth is Commentary by Terry Anker Does anyone of us hold the patent on truth? Lo, these many centuries we humans have gone forth and multiplied. Perhaps we are the most successful higher creature to ever inhabit this blue rock. We are uniquely suited to work in groups. And in doing so, we fight significantly above our weight class. Among the elements required to this interaction are communication, intelligence, and likely most important, trust. We are required to believe in our compadres – to rely upon their commitment to us and the cause at hand. If we fail to have faith in their dedication, we are far less inclined to meet the challenge and keep our part. So truth, as an essential component of trust, is necessarily an essential component of human flourishing.

Truth, one might say, is sacred. Then, how do we identify it? It is simple enough when fact can be independently measured.

Pure water boils at sea level when it reaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit. We can all find

comfort in the elegant proof of this certainty. But much of what we call fact may more accurately be identified as perspective.

From where we sit, we honestly call out our read on a set of data but cannot hope to definitively call it universal truth.

The truth is that truth may be a function of social context and our own bias rather than a measurable scientific standard. If we cannot find a common starting point, can we hope to find our way to a common truth? Diversity is good. But in pursuing it, do we necessarily overlook the value of communal experience? Can we find shared truth without shared understanding? Who knows? Yet, if we hope to benefit from mutual trust, we know that finding and pursuing mutual truth is a prerequisite.

When my husband and I were first married, holidays, particularly Christmas, were a struggle. We both come humor from large families with very specific rituals and traditions.

I grew up with Scotch pines, Christmas Eve skits, and Santa’s gifts unwrapped.

Doo remembers Fraser firs, reading “The Night Before Christmas” the night before Christmas and receiving one “Santa setout.” Initially, the only thing we had in common were the big, multi-colored lights that emitted dangerously high levels of heat. It was a start, and we survived our first few Decembers without counseling.

But when we began having kids, things intensified. Where would we spend Christmas? Whose traditions would we follow?

At the heart of the matter, whose family was better? And even after 20 years, we are still having to tweak our Wilson-Morris melding of holiday cheer (though I contend that live theater is far better than a book reading!).

Take for instance the tinsel battle. I grew up with tinsel. I clearly remember my parents fighting over the stuff, mom clumping it on the branches just to be done with the whole tree-trimming mess, and dad, following behind her, barking, “You can’t just throw it on, Patty! You have to lay it carefully, strand by strand!” I truly believe Christmas trees are naked without tinsel.

Doo, unfortunately, did not experience the magic of tinsel in his house, and when I suggested it for our first tree together, he scoffed at the idea. So we compromised.

Every other year would be a tinsel year.

2016? Tinsel! And yet Doo behaved like a child when I broke it out last week and instructed everyone on its proper handling and application (no clumping, one strand per branch. Don’t screw it up!). “Well, the tree looked good a minute ago,” he declared. Really? Are we not passed this Yuletide pettiness?

No, we are not. But that’s the thing about marriage. It really doesn’t matter how long you’ve been together. Compromise will always play a leading role. And if I have to sacrifice “Mommie Dearest” reenactments, then Doo must learn to embrace tinsel, in all its sparkly beauty. Peace out.

Town tops among home prices Commentary by Jim Litten Central Indiana’s residential real estate market continues to grow, according to statistics compiled by real estate F.C. Tucker Company.

Despite having 2,299 fewer homes on the market to choose from, pended home sales increased 4.4 percent from October 2015. The average sales price increased 2.9 percent to $187,867. In the 15-county region, only three counties had its average sales price decrease, with the highest at 2.3 percent.

Boone County’s pended sales increased 14.8 percent in October 2016 compared to October 2015. Prices have also increased by 7.9 percent over last year to an average of $292,808. The number of available homes for sale, however, continues to decline in the region; inventory in Boone County slid 19.2 percent in October, a drop of 82 homes available compared to this time last year.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sales price increased 8.9 percent to $406,387 – the highest average for the 15-county region.

• Inventory moved at a faster pace in Zionsville in October 2016. Overall, homes

sold in 68 days – 25 fewer days than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had fewer homes available to them. Last month, 174 homes were available for sale – nine fewer homes compared to October 2015.

• Pended home sales increased in Zionsville. In October 2016, 25 homes sold – an increase of four homes compared to October 2015.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, seven were priced $500,000 to $999,999; eight were priced $300,000 to $499,999; seven were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and three were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

Attractive pricing and financing options have contributed to steady sales month over month. We’re optimistic about the future and don’t anticipate significant changes in either of those areas under a new administration.

10 ways to control cravings Commentary by Christy Kirkendol-Watson With the holiday season upon us, we all could use a quick reminder about reaching for the “bad stuff” during idle time or diet otherwise. Here are 10 strategies to help decrease cravings: 1. Make the decision. You have to decide if you want to gradually decrease the bad sugars/carbohydrates or quit cold turkey. After a month, you will experience fewer cravings.

2. Watch your sugar level. Items with a lot of carbohydrates, or sugar, cause your blood sugar to rise and fall fast.

Eat high-protein meals to regulate your sugar level and feel full longer.

3. Sugary beverages: Don’t! These are full of carbohydrates and sugar, and diet drinks have been shown to increase cravings because artificial sweeteners are 600 times sweeter than table sugar.

Water, please.

4. Substitute. If you’re craving something, choose a healthier alternative instead, such as a protein bar or tea.

5. Distract. If you’re feeling the munchies have arrived, want to stress eat or eat out of boredom, try other activities

instead. Immediately.

6. Question yourself! If you find yourself looking in the kitchen, ask yourself, “Am I actually hungry?” You may really be bored, stressed, anxious or in need of movement.

7. Organize. It’s really this simple: Organize your fridge and pantry so you see healthy options first.

8. Eat mindfully. We eat fast and often while in the middle of another task, which leads to eating more. Only focusing on eating helps you realize when you feel/sense being full.

9. Control your environment. Eat a high-protein filling breakfast so it will be easier to avoid temptation at work.

10. Sleep. When you don’t get enough sleep, the hormone cortisol becomes abnormal and increases hunger. Try banning electronics in the bedroom and instead read or bathe before bedtime.

Antibiotics, childhood infections Commentary by Dr. Dorota Szczepaniak Knowing the best way to manage childhood bacterial infections can be challenging for parents. Antibiotic stewardship initiakids tives resulting from concerns about widespread antibiotic resistance have changed the way many bacterial infections are treated in both children and adults.

Such stewardship practices involve allowing minor bacterial infections to run their course and treating only the most serious infections with antibiotics to help these medicines maintain their effectiveness in the future.

Less than 30 years ago, children died or were severely impaired from meningitis, one of the most severe bacterial infections.

Fortunately today, this disease can be easily prevented by following a routine vaccination schedule, and if necessary, treated with strong medications.

Pneumonia and bacterial urinary tract infections are conditions that require antibiotics.

Prescription antibiotics also are needed for some minor bacterial infections, such as strep throat and impetigo. If untreated, these infections may have serious consequences.

In healthy children, infections like sinusitis

and ear infections may go away within a few days without antibiotics. Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), which accounts for less than 50 percent of pink eye cases, may not require antibiotics, depending on the severity of symptoms. Allowing minor infections like these to resolve on their own strengthens the body’s immune system. It’s also important to remember that antibiotics are not effective in treating viral infections, such as the common cold, flu, cough and sore throat.

Although it’s natural for parents to want to minimize their child’s discomfort and enable quick healing, it’s best to let your child’s doctor take the lead in determining if and when prescribing an antibiotic is necessary. The most important things parents can do to help keep children healthy are to instill good handwashing habits and ensure children receive recommended vaccinations. Prevention is key, and it starts at home.

St.Vincent among top hospitals

“Of the things they measure one of them is survival and mortality from heart attacks, heart failure and bypass surgery, so that obviously is the most important thing,” said Fry, chairman of the cardiology division of St.Vincent Medical Group and chairman of Cardiovascular Service Line for St.Vincent Health and Ascension Health. “The outcomes are demonstratively better than a hospital that is not in the 50. All aspects they cite are important. But if you are a patient, to know that your chances of surviving a heart attack or surviving an episode of heart failure or having a good outcome from bypass surgery or some other procedures, those would be the kinds of things you’d look for.”

Center has been recognized as one of the nation’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals. It was the only hospital in Indiana to receive the honor.

The Truven study is an annual quantitative study that identifies the nation’s best cardiovascular care providers, based on publicly available data.

According to Truven, hospitals in the 50 have significantly higher inpatient survival than other Fry cardiovascular hospitals (25 to 55 percent higher).

The Truven reports the 2017 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals also had fewer patients with complications (20 to 22 percent fewer); higher 30-day survival rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and heart failure (HF), and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients (0.5 to 1.1 percentage points higher); lower readmission rates for AMI, HF and CABG patients (0.5 to 1.2 percentage points lower; average lengths of stay for CABG patients that were one day lower (0.3 to 0.5 days lower than the other patient groups); and $1,200 to $6,100 less in total costs per patient case.

Jessamyn Anderson has developed a strong connection with the Indiana Wind Symphony.

The 2011 Carmel High performance School graduate will perform as a soloist with IWS at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Palladium in Carmel.

“I can hardly believe it,” Anderson said. “(IWS music director) Dr. (Charlie) Conrad asked me to join the IWS for their holiday concert when I was a freshman in college (Indiana University), and that Anderson was my professional debut.

This will be my seventh time performing at the Palladium, and I hope it isn’t my last.”

The theme of the concert is Christmas Warmth.

Anderson will be singing the Indiana Wind Symphony’s special renditions of “O Holy Night” and “White Christmas.”

“There may also be a special treat, but you’ll have to come to the show to hear it,” Anderson said.

After spending a summer with Ohio Light Opera Company, Anderson moved to New York City in September.

“So, I’m just getting my feet wet in the music scene here,” Anderson said. “I’ve done a cabaret and an impromptu performance with a jazz ensemble. I also sing with a contemporary church choir at my home church in the city, and I love singing with that group.”

Anderson loves performing with IWS, too.

“It is always a joy to collaborate with talented musicians, but it’s an even better experience when they are kind and fun to work with,” Anderson said. “That’s how it has always been with the IWS. Many of them have been in the group since I started performing with the ensemble, and it’s been fun to grow musically right alongside them. They are always warm and welcoming, and they always leave a delicious Symphony Hershey bar in my dressing room, so no complaints about that.”

Morgan and twin sister Julia, 15, homeschooled sophomores from Noblesville, share the role of the Sugar Plum with Ricako Suzuki in the IBC’s production of “The Nutcracker” Dec. 8 through 11 at the Toby Theatre at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This is Julia’s second year as the Sugar Plum.

“It was so special and incredible to work with (Khozashvili),” Julia said. “He’s an incredible dancer and he’s super nice as a person and just a dream to work with.”

IBC founding Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva-Randall said Khozashvili was impressed with Julia last year.

Julia and Morgan encourage each other to improve.

“When we dance together, it’s not a competition. We just inspire each other to do better,” Julia said.

Island Eggnog Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Ingredients: • 6 eggs, beaten • 2 teaspoons grated lime zest • 2 cans (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk • 3 cups canned evaporated milk • 2 cups Angostura 7 Year Rum • 1 ounce Angostura Aromatic Bitters • 1 pinch freshly grated nutmeg or cinnamon Directions: In large bowl, beat eggs and lime zest using electric mixer until light and fluffy. Gradually pour in condensed milk while continuing to mix then pour in evaporated milk.

Stir in rum and bitters; sprinkle with nutmeg. Transfer to bottle and refrigerate at least 3 hours (preferably overnight). Serve in rocks glasses over crushed ice or in Champagne flutes for entertaining. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg or cinnamon.

Blueprint for Improvement: Basement theater in Carmel Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal for this basement was to maximize the efficiency of the under-utilized rooms, creating a functional and beautiful space for the family.

1. The main area of the basement was converted into a theater room. A platform was created to give raised seating, creating a true theater feel while maintaining the inviting, casual look of the basement.

2. A seating wall was created in the theater room with a bar ledge so the family and guests could enjoy their bar while watching a movie. Slate tile on the wall mixed with the luxury vinyl flooring provide an overall visual warmth.

3. A barn door divides the dedicated game room and theater. This allows the homeowners to open up and connect the two rooms, or close it off while not in use. The game room was created by combining the unused bedroom and bonus room.

4. The casual seating area of the basement was updated with a new fireplace and built-ins to tie the entire rustic aesthetic together.

Before Background Info: These homeowners in the Village of West Clay in Carmel had a basement filled with miscellaneous exercise equipment and unused bedroom space. They were looking for a space that fit all of their functional needs while still looking beautiful, bright and updated.

Before problems: The basement was mostly unused space and was not an enjoyable place for the family to gather and make memories. The unneeded bedroom and bonus room were essentially wasted space, and the exercise equipment needed a dedicated space to be hidden away.

Taipei’s Longshan Temple Commentary by Don Knebel The Longshan Temple in Taipei, Taiwan, is a favorite destination for students seeking help as they face important examinations. The power of the temple is said to be travel demonstrated by the survival of its most sacred possession.

In 1738, Han immigrants from the mainland built a Buddhist temple in the Manka District of Taipei. They named the temple after one they had left behind and dedicated it to the Bodhisattva of Compassion, known to Chinese Buddhists as Guan-Yin, usually portrayed as female, and to Tibetan Buddhists as Avalokitesvara, usually portrayed as male. As people with different religious beliefs and traditions came to Taipei, images of other gods and goddesses, some from Taoism and some from Chinese folk religions, were added to the temple. Today, the Longshan Temple includes representations of about 100 deities, including Guan-Yu, a Han general many worship as the god of war. A pamphlet handed out at the temple says this spiritual diversity “shows the tolerant mentality of the Chinese people in

their religious life.”

The multitude of deities represented in the Longshan Temple means there is one for virtually all of life’s milestones, from sea voyages and crucial tests to marriages and child births.

Before any of these events, residents of Taipei go to Longshan Temple, where they pray to the god likely to be of most help. They offer up smoldering incense in golden urns featuring images of “fools holding up the sky.”

Earthquakes and typhoons have repeatedly damaged the Longshan Temple, which was completely rebuilt in 1919. Allied aircraft bombed it during World War II. Despite the devastation of the structures around it, the ornate representation of Bodhisattva Guan-Yin has survived, largely intact. Temple supporters attribute this to the efficacy of Longshan Temple. Students who visit the temple before passing their exams agree.
