Boone County a ‘beer desert’

There’s one at 96th and Michigan. There’s another one in the Village of West Clay, and there’s one in Carmel along 116th Street. brewery And yet Zionsville still lacks something that appeared on the wish list for the town’s master plan.

A brew pub.

“I’m baffled by it, too,” Bob Harris, manager for Harris FLP, said. “I thought for sure there would be one by now.”

The Boone Co. Economic Development Corporation agrees — and is hoping to bring a local option for craft beer into the “untapped” market.

“We definitely think, looking at the demographics of Zionsville and Whitestown, it shows that there’s a younger crowd there that has a little bit more disposable income. Those are exactly the sorts of individuals we think microbreweries really tend to market to or appeal to,” Molly Whitehead, executive director of the Boone Co. EDC, said. “We think we’re really just kind of primed to that development with microbreweries.”

Whitehead said Zionsville has several places that could be a good fit for a brewery.

“We’ll keep hitting the pavement here trying to tout the community and what we have to offer,” she said. “We just kind of call this the ‘beer desert’ here in Boone County because we don’t have anything.”

The Boone Co. EDC used the Whitestown Brew Fest Sept. 19 to kick-start its marketing efforts, as the event brought nearly 40 breweries to the area.

“Actually as a result of that event and marketing directly to those companies we had about three or four companies reach out to us in the matter of a couple days after that event,” Whitehead said. “We’ve been actively working with several of them, showing them sites. Primarily the interest we’ve seen so far has been in Whitestown and Zionsville both. We’re just trying to get one or two of them to finally make that com-

mitment and make that announcement. We think we’re pretty close.”

Harris FLP owns a large amount of property in Zionsville and Harris said that he has spoken with a lot of microbrew and brew pub owners and investors hoping to spark some interest.

“I’ve just had interest,” Harris said, emphasizing that nothing is planned yet. His property of focus is on South Main Street, near 106th Street.

“I think it would be a great spot for it,” he said, “as well as it would be a great spot for a lot of other stuff. Most recently there’s been a lot of interest in Zionsville for a brew pub. I think the time’s coming.”

If he is successful, he anticipates a new building would be constructed on the site where there is currently a parking lot. He expects additional parking would be added to the area owned

Whitehead said the Boone Co. EDC has also been looking across the Indianapolis metro region as well as statewide and even across Indiana borders for microbreweries that may not wish to move their headquarters to the area but could expand with a second location, similar to Indianapolis-based Sun King and its latest operation in Fishers.

Grants awarded – The Boone County Solid Waste Management District recently awarded several grants for environmental awareness and sustainability. A total of $15,000 was awarded to the following agencies: AgRecycle, The Arc of Greater Boone County, Boone County Maintenance Department, Habitat for Humanity, Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, Lebanon, Zionsville Lions Club and the Town of Zionsville Street Department.

Permanent traffic light – The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced that the temporary traffic light at the intersection of US 52 and SR 47 will become permanent.

INDOT officials have studied the statistics from the intersection since the light was installed in August. A drop in vehicle collisions and consistent lower speeds in the area have proven the need for the light to remain.

Executive Director named – ZYSA is pleased to announce that Peter O’Scanaill has been named new executive director. He has served as a coach and travel committee member at ZYSA since 2010, and previously served as travel commissioner and youth O’Scanaill academy director in another central Indiana soccer club.

Santa breakfast – Join Zionsville Tri Kappa Chapter on Main Street for Santa Breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. on Dec. 5. Make a gingerbread house – Gingerbread house decorating will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 5 at Brick Street Inn, 175 S. Main St. in Zionsville. The free family event is open to all ages and is sponsored by Zionsville United Methodist Church.

Lincoln Live Daniel Russel portrayed the nation’s 16th president during Lincoln Live, a program presented by the Zionsville Historical Society on Nov. 15. “I posed for 141 photographs during my presidency, I don’t mind one more,” Russel said as Lincoln.

Christmas in the Village features events all month long

By Amanda Foust • news@currentzionsville.com Christmas in the Village is in full swing, with several holiday events planned throughout the month of December. holidays “We have a lot of activities planned this year, so we hope to see a lot of people join us,” said Julie Johns-Cole, executive director of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, which plans the event.

“It’s a really family-friendly event.”

On Dec. 5, children will have the chance to join Santa for breakfast. Holiday home tours, concerts, art shows and more will be offered throughout the day.

Ladies are welcome to an evening on the town Dec. 10. Village area shops are open from 5 to 8 p.m. and are offering activities and specials to help shoppers find just the right gifts for Christmas.

Dec. 17 features a Christmas Crawl from 6 to 9 p.m. Main Street will offer samples of seasonal beverages and appetizers from restaurants. Attend or participate in a karaoke and an ugly sweater contest for a chance to win prizes at the end of the night.

Each weekend will offer a variety of free activities to the public in honor of this established Zionsville tradition. At Christmas in the Village there will be a horse-drawn carriage, barrel-train, trolley-rides, visits with Santa, and other forms of live-entertainment.

“We see several thousand people and it’s free,” Johns-Cole said, “These events are a small effort to thank all residents and customers of businesses.”

ZCS celebrates winners of first video contest

Division winners were recognized and the grand champion announced for Zionsville Community Schools’ first education student video contest during the ZCS Board of School trustees meeting in November.

The contest invited students to create 60-second videos with the theme of “The Road to Life Begins Here.” Tommy Smith, a ZCHS sophomore, took home the top prize of $1,000, which was made possible by a donor.

“This idea was hatched last spring, but it took (Chief Technology Officer) Dan Layton to come on to the scene and enlist the aid of (Business and Marketing Teacher Johnathan) Grismore at the high school and four of his amazing students,” Supt. Scott Robison said.

Those students — high school seniors Maddie Hine, Katie Bakaysa and Morgan Roe plus junior Claire Drew — organized the contest and had “literally taken care of everything that we’ve done so far,” Layton said. The ZCS board presented the girls with plaques thanking them for their efforts.

“Over the past two months, we’ve had the pleasure of working with (Layton) and Dr. Robison and Mr. Grismore on this video contest,”

Drew said. “Part of putting this contest together required us to make a website, advertise and organize judges to help pick all the different videos to win.”

Their original goal for the contest’s first year was 20 submissions, but they ended up receiving 55 entries.

“We were blown away with the response to this maiden voyage,” Robison said. “We know all of these folks will have a very bright future in making videos if that’s what they want to do. We saw such an eye in what Tommy did … Wow, I think someday maybe he’ll invite us to walk the red carpet.”

After a one-year absence, the Zionsville Village Residents’ Association’s tradition of putting out fresh-cut Scotch pine holidays Christmas trees in front of their homes and businesses has returned.

“We had a great response this year,” said Jane Forbes, a village resident who coordinates the tree sales with Erika Singler. “I have no idea what happened last year.”

For whatever reason, there where not enough ordered (less than 50) to continue the tradition in 2014.

Forbes said they were shooting for an order of 50 trees to continue this year and 78 were ordered.

“This is one of our biggest years if not the biggest,” Forbes said. “Each year we hope it gets bigger and bigger.”

The trees were delivered Nov. 21.

“I used to live in the Chicago area, and we did this where I live,” Forbes said. “So when I moved here, my aunt and I started it here.

That was 10 or 11 years ago.”

Several volunteers from the Village area volunteered their time to deliver and set up 41 trees.

“People decorate them however they like,” Forbes said.

Forbes said she is pleased the tradition is back on.

“There are a lot of great people involved. It’s a fun little tradition that we started,” Forbes said. “It’s simple, and people enjoy it.”

Boy Scouts add Christmas tree lot in Whitestown

By Steven Aldrich • news@currentzionsville.com Each holiday season, Boy Scout Troop 358 of Zionsville runs a Christmas tree sale at Lions Park to raise money for holidays annual activities and gear.

The sale has been so successful the troop has added a second location in Whitestown at the Municipal Complex, 6210 S. 700 E. “The troop recognizes the growth in the town of Whitestown, where many of our boys live,” said Mark Pishon, troop fundraising chair.

“We wanted to give families who live in the I-65 corridor another option closer to their homes.”

As long as the new location proves to be a financial success for the scouts and the town gives the OK, the troop plans to return to Whitestown next year.

Trees will be available at both sites until the lots are sold out. Orders may also be made online at troop358.biz with the option to pick up a tree at either lot or select home delivery.

Scouts ranging from ages 11 to 18 will man the lots and be ready to prepare and trim

trees to customer specifications. In addition to trees, the scouts also offer wreaths, sprays, LED lights, hangers and indoor decorations.

Once the holidays are over, the Scouts will help recycle the trees. This service costs $15 and is available by signing up online or at the lots.

“If you put your tree on your curb by 9 a.m. the first Saturday of the New Year, we will pick it up and recycle it,” Pishon said. “Most of the trees become mulch. The troop will recycle any Christmas tree regardless of where it was purchased.”

Holiday shoppers looking to rethink the way they demonstrate their charity have another avenue to try out. Zionsville Presbyterian Church is hosting its annual holidays Alternative Christmas Market from 9:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 6.

The market is attempting to raise funds for various ministries the church is involved with, according to volunteer Susie Martin.

“It’s some of the mission trips in foreign countries, or various things that we help with here in Indianapolis,” Martin said.

The alternative market works by allowing buyers to make a donation toward one of the various missions or ministries in place of a physical gift. This can be done in the name of another individual if desired.

“What you’re trying to do, instead of buying a gift for your teacher - like another mug or something like that -- this enables you to give her a card with something inside that talks about whichever organization you’ve donated money to in his or her name,” Martin said.

Diner tradition continues Commentary by Ward Degler We eat differently on vacation than at home. At home, breakfast is cereal with sliced banana, orange juice and plain talk coffee. On vacation we eat out.

During our recent stay at Daytona Beach, we ate twice at the Starlight Diner, a genuine throwback to the 1930s and ’40s when these narrow aluminum and chrome eateries populated many of our eastern cities.

Up front, the food is good, abundant and inexpensive. Bacon, eggs, pancakes and coffee for two for about 12 bucks, including tip.

I’m told their burgers and fries are good, too, although we ate lunch and dinner elsewhere.

Diners are solidly American. They look like train cars for a reason. In the 1930s an auto body designer and illustrator by the name of Roland Stickney designed the first diner after the streamlined Burlington Zephyr train.

J.D. Judkins Co. of Merrimac, Mass., bought the design and started building the Zephyr Streamliner diners in 1936.

They varied in length from 40 feet to 52 feet, but everything else was pretty much standard. The entrance was in the middle at the top of several steps. Booths lined the

walls on both ends, and a long counter with stools graced the other side. A juke box was usually stuffed into one corner, although at the Starlight, it is just inside the door. The music is early ’50s rock.

Judkins built diners until 1942 when the nation’s steel and aluminum was diverted to the war effort. The factory never reopened, and the buildings were later demolished. One unfinished diner sat abandoned on the grounds for years.

Today, only two of the original Zephyr Streamliner diners still exist: in Salem, Mass., and the Modern Diner in Pawtucket, R.I. Most are open 24 hours a day, a routine started when they catered to the late-night party crowd in one part of town, and the late shift factory workers on the other side.

It’s refreshing to note diners still dot the American landscape even though the original design was manufactured for a mere six years. That’s a whole lot better than the train that inspired it.

Few things go together more naturally than basketball and Hoosiers. Thorntown, part of the original “Cradle of Indiana Basketball,” is looking to pay tribute to its most event historically significant team in a 100th anniversary event.

And how does Thorntown, with a population of less than 2,000, pull it off? With a throwback game between Zionsville Community High School and Western Boone High School this month. Designed to emulate the feel and spirit of the 1915 state championship team, the event will feature retro player and cheerleader uniforms, special recognition for former team members, including cheerleaders and coaches, and more.

“We are very proud of our history and the history of the five schools that made up Webo,” Western Boone Athletic Director Jason Mulligan said. “There were a lot of great athletic accomplishments achieved by those schools, and we try to honor and celebrate them.”

After its 1915 Championship win, Thorntown experienced a variety of smaller accomplishments throughout the years.

to be able to celebrate such a great accomplishment. Any opportunity to honor history is awesome.”

Event organizers are also hoping to collect donations for a series of informational signs to be placed around the town promoting the town’s basketball history and local businesses. The goal is $1,000, with the first donation being made by Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and former Thorntown player John Robbins.

The Thorntown throwback game is scheduled for Dec. 5 at the Thorntown Elementary gym, 200 W. Mill St. The junior varsity game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and the varsity game at 3 p.m.

Santa, crafts at WhiskerFest

You might also take your kids each year to sit on Santa’s lap for a photo. holidayS This year, the Humane Society for Boone Co. is offering a similar experience for pets and their owners Dec. 5 at the Whitestown Municipal Complex, 6210 S. 700 E. WhiskerFest 2015 combines a craft show and a pet photo op with Santa. Susan Austin, the vice president of the Humane Society for Boone Co., said it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate pets and shop for homemade holiday gifts at the same time.

“My best holiday decorations came from craft art fairs as have some of my best gifts to friends,” Austin said.

The crafts will include hand-painted barn quilts, handcrafted glass designs, handmade dog collars and leads and many other items from local vendors.

I’m rich. I really am. I have a full tank of gas and a little white car on four round, full-of-air tires (thanks to service plain talk guys who inflated them).

I have groceries, and I just paid all my bills. There’s little left in my account, but I am rich.

I have happy, healthy, children with happy, healthy spouses. I have happy, healthy grandchildren. We all have homes, and we have each other. We have beds to sleep in, furnaces for winter, air conditioners for summer. We are blessed.

I also have the blessing of wonderful neighbors. One of them – with the help of his daughter, a tractor, and a wheelbarrow – just delivered me a pile of wood. When I say pile of wood I mean a great big, vertical pile of wood.

A whole rack of wood, sawed down himself.

I look at that beautiful stack of wood and all the shades of brown, charcoal and black; and what I see is warmth.

In my mind, I see my fireplace and all the fires that wood will make. I see myself and people I love in front of that fireplace. I see logs unraveling rings and rings, years and years, of tree growth into red, yellow and blue

flames.

Another neighbor stands ready to push the snow from my driveway. He has a new truck, and he and that truck will give me and my little white car freedom this winter. Freedom to get to the grocery, the library, the doctor, the grandchildren. Freedom to say “yes” to needs and invitations. “Yes,” I can help with the kids. “Yes,” I can get to exercise class, yoga and book club. “Yes,” I am okay.

These two neighbors are trying to keep me warm and safe this winter.

Another neighbor, this one across the street, added to my blessings last week with a special invitation. As a child, it was always special to be chosen to go out to dinner with the “birthday girl” and her family.

I’m here to tell you it’s still special. This time the birthday girl was celebrating 80-something. She asked me along, she said, because, “I’ve shared those wonderful fires.”

(There’s that wood again.)

Like I said before, I am rich.

Website gives women a forum to share life experiences in a safe place

One year ago, Teal Craycraft shared her plan for 2015 with a friend.

“I’m not going to live in fear anymore,” she told Katie Morris.

“I’m going to pursue what feels right and cover story follow my heart.”

That clicked something in Morris’ brain.

“I said, ‘I’ve got this idea, and it’s been eating at me,’” she said.

Several years ago she conceptualized a website dedicated to women sharing their stories without judgment and fear.

“It was one of those ideas that I had, then never told anyone about it because I didn’t think it could possibly be as awesome as it was in my head,” Morris said.

Craycraft, a 1998 Zionsville Community High School graduate, was all in. After months of brainstorming, SpeakYourStory.org launched, inviting women to share their unfiltered experiences online in a forum without fear of comment.

“There literally is not a week that goes by that we’re not bawling,” Craycraft said. “They’re so powerful.”

The two attorneys knew nothing about website development and learned almost everything from scratch, working with an online publishing platform and learning to write code as needed.

“We made a lot of mistakes,” Craycraft said.

By mid-March with a dozen submissions, they couldn’t wait any longer.

“Our goal was when we got 25 or 30 stories we would start publishing on a weekly basis and that way we would have a cache of them,” said Morris, “but we couldn’t hold it in."

Stories are published on a weekly basis, with the entire campaign starting at 11 a.m. Social media and emails are sent notifying followers. Morris and Craycraft shared their own stories to launch the site. Since then authors ranging in age from 16 to 87 have contributed, Craycraft said, but the website is geared for an adult audience.

“Our stories are about really sensitive topics, and there’s a lot of adult content and language,” she said.

The women met after both returned to Indiana about five years ago, and both were struggling to make adult friends.

“I grew up here in Zionsville, but I didn’t stay in touch with anyone,” Craycraft said.

“It’s been a lifesaving relationship even before Speak Your Story started,” said Morris, who grew up in New Castle. “It’s really hard to make friends as an adult.”

The theme of loneliness is one that resonates with Morris and is a thread that’s woven through some of the online stories.

“If we can do anything to eliminate that for other people, that’s like my truest calling,” she said.

Initially they published items as they were submitted, but soon discovered that themes were emerging.

“It’s helpful because then we can connect with organizations that are much bigger than us, like Planned Parenthood, domestic violence shelters and depression therapists,” Craycraft said. “They are also helping us.”

Themes have ranged from mental health issues, domestic violence, illness and addiction.

“That’s another thing that we’re passionate about,” Morris said. “We cannot go back to this time where the things we’ve fought so hard for are returned to shame and silence.”

While the pair recognizes the need for a revenue stream in order to keep the website operational, they are adamant that it remain ad-free.

“That’s part of the safety of the space,” Morris said.

SpeakYourStory recently won the InnovateHER challenge, with a goal of identifying products and services to address the challenges faced by women and overcoming barriers in the workforce. Craycraft and Morris will compete in Washington, D.C. in March for a grand prize hosted by the SBA and Microsoft Corporation.

Craycraft and Morris are also searching for a publisher for an anthology of stories and are working to launch a podcast. A successful month-long crowdfunding campaign raised $10,000

to pay for the podcast and publishing. The podcast should air by the end of the year, followed by an Indy Fringe event in February.

“One of our big dreams is putting on our own event at Indy Fringe,” Morris said, “a night of storytelling that’s done professionally.”

Last summer Indy Fringe allowed Morris and Craycraft to share the story of their website prior to performances that focused on women’s stories. An executive director of Planned Parenthood saw them before one of the performances and sent their information to a partner organization, which led to the opportunity to be on a panel of speakers at the annual conference of Civil Liberties and Public Policy.

“We’re basically on this panel with people that…” Craycraft said. “…we’ve idolized,” finished Morris.

The panel is scheduled for April, more than one year after their website launched.

“We’re going to reach an audience of people that we couldn’t have imagined six months ago,” Craycraft said.

“There are so many ways you can tell stories,” Morris said.

“It can be your art, it can be told live, in a podcast, there’s so many things you can do with this.”

Current is not the publication to help an electorate make an unbiased informed decision.” Actually, we lost track of the first Democrat debate after it was decided that everything sounded like “four more years of Obama.” The rhetoric on that side of the aisle is as troubling as that of the Republicans. Third party, please?

• The wailing and gnashing of teeth you hear is that of the GOP leadership, which also has to be shaking in its collective boots, what with Donald Trump (R-Billions) a clear favorite in New Hampshire. Trump, who is so far ahead at this writing, even draws support from lower-income white Democrats and liberal independents, all of which seem to have been reeled in by his pointed remarks on trade and immigration.

• Just to our east, over in Piketon, Ohio, there is a soon-to-be-shuttered uranium enrichment plant. Anxiety is heightening around the globe, and the Iran nuclear agreement allows for 6,000 uraniumenrichment centrifuges, but the Obama administration is cutting off weapons capabilities? U.S. Rep Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) agree wholeheartedly that the move is a threat to our national security - to speak nothing of the ability to fuel our aircraft carriers and submarines. The Department of Energy needs to be thoroughly evaluated, and the leadership needs to be swept out.

Leading the way

Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi was once quoted as saying, “There goes my people.

I must follow them, for I am their leader.”

Does he have it right? Can we lead from behind? Many, perhaps even most, believe that leaders, elected and otherwise, should be out-in-front showing us, the unwashed plebian masses the road to enlightenment and redemption.

In the 1970s film, “The Poseidon Adventure,” a decaying cruise ship taking its final voyage, before being sent to the scrapyards, is hit by a rogue wave and capsized. As the surviving passengers scramble to find their way to the bottom of the boat (which is now the top), they cleave into two separate groups – one led by a cop portrayed by Ernest Borgnine and the other led by a Reverend in the form of Gene Hackman. Along the way, there is much drama, explosion and crisis. But the patterns of leadership are clearly cut.

At one critical juncture, the aging Hollywood actress Shelly Winters, as Belle

Rosen, a one-time Olympian, decides to dive in and swim through the oily and jagged debris inside the sinking ship to rescue another member of their group. Her husband Manny knew she would not likely survive the attempt and begged her not.

Each showed leadership: one passively, others by getting out front and taking charge, and finally, another through extreme personal sacrifice. So which has a lock on the best way to lead? Is it possible they are they all right? Can someone be Gandhi in one circumstance and then drag his fellow passengers through a fiery, watery abyss the next?

Do “the people” lead the leaders or do the leaders lead the people? Perhaps, it is the intention of the leader and the need of the people that should lead the way.

I received an interesting email yesterday from a reader who doesn’t want to read my work but feels compelled to humor do so every week. (Apparently, I’m a sucky writer, and he likes to check for any improvement.) He stated my columns resemble a sixth-grader’s diary entries and asked why my editors categorize “such drivel” as “commentary.” So here is my bi-annual disclosure column. Enjoy! Or don’t.

Whatevs.

Let’s address the issues in reverse order, shall we? First up, my classification. Because I generally “comment” on my daughters’ inherent desires to see me on blood pressure meds, my columns are labeled “commentary.”

Even when I discuss the obscene amount of time I spend driving the same 10 miles back and forth to dance, tae kwon do and color guard, I’m technically still “commenting.” I rarely address politics, religion or world affairs because I can only focus on so many things at once, and keeping my children alive and off Xbox demands my full attention these days. It’s called a commentary on life, sir. Deal with it.

As for the diary-like style I typically employ, I fail to see the problem. The best way to communicate with people is face to face, through something called “talking,” and since I can’t actually meet with my millions (sorry, millions minus one) of fans in person, I find that writing like I speak is the next best thing. In actuality, my weekly column is a journal entry. But instead of “Dear Diary,” it’s “Dear Fellow Suburban Hunting Widow” or, in this case, “Dear Grumpy Reader!”

This leads me to the last concern, the accusation that my work isn’t quite up to Pulitzer standards. Fair enough. I have no degree in journalism or in creative writing, and as stated above, I write like I speak, grammar and spelling be damned. What you call drivel though, I call “relatability.” It’s why most Hoosiers like me. I’m not here to change the world, just to relay observations on surviving middle age and defending against teenage body odor.

That was fun! Let’s do it again in June.

The oldest divorce in history was between two people in England, both over 90 years old.

Said the unhappy couple, “We were waiting for the kids to die.”

The heaviest thing ever pulled by a woman in high heels? Lia Grimanis of Canada lugged a 14,000-pound truck across a football field.

Second place goes to Rosie Frobisher of Peoria who hauled her fat, drunk husband out of a Hooters restaurant.

The oldest living parrot is Cookie, who is 80 years old and lives at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. She’s very sensitive about her age, and when asked about it, she says she’s not talking.

The shortest bull in the world is named Chegs and he lives in Ramona, Calif. The longest bull in the world was a 40-minute speech that Donald Trump gave in Des Moines, Iowa.

IBC’s ‘The Nutcracker’ to feature Boston Ballet dancer

The second time around as Sugar Plum Fairy will be even sweeter for Olivia Behrmann in the Indiana Ballet ConChristmas servatory’s production of “The Nutcracker.”

The thing that makes it more special is this time she gets to dance with Lasha Khozashvili, an acclaimed dancer with the Boston Ballet.

“I’m excited,” said Behrmann, who said she should get three or four days before the shows to prepare with Khozashvili.

The IBC will have six performances from Dec. 10-13 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Behrmann, a 17-year-old from Indianapolis, who takes high school classes online so she has time for her ballet, said she should benefit from her return role as Sugar Plum Fairy.

“Now I know what to expect,” said Behrman, who danced with a fellow IBC student last year. “I can watch my performance and know what I should fix or work on.”

Khozashvili will be dancing in the role of the Prince, alongside three IBC Professional Training Program students in the dual role of Princess Masha and the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Along with Behrmann, Julia Rust and Rachel Schultz will play the dual role and dance with Khozaskvili.

IBC founding artistic director Aloyona Yakovleva-Randall said it’s a great opportunity for Behrmann and other girls to dance with Khozaskvili.

“She is going to dance with one of the most talented male dancers in the world, according to Dance Magazine,” Yakovelva-Randall said.

“He’s the principal dancer with Boston Ballet.

To get that experience with a dancer like that, it’s another level of education.”

This will be Khozashvili’s fifth appearance in IBC’s sixth annual production of “The Nutcracker.”

“He really enjoys this production,” Yakovleva-Randall said. “He trusts us.”

Last year was the first time Khozashvili danced with one of the IBC students.

“Before he danced with a professional guest dancer,” Yakovleva-Randall said.

Yakovleva-Randall based this on the 1934 choreography of Vasily Vainonen. Yakovleva-Randall said this is the closest to the original version that debuted in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892.

“They (cast members) love it. It’s very

sweet,” Yakovleva-Randall said. “It’s about a girl who has a really good heart. She opens her heart to a little, ugly Nutcracker doll because no one wants to play with it but her.

Because of her kindness, the Nutcracker becomes a handsome prince. He invites her to his world where everything is sweet and where all children’s dreams come true. It’s a story of being kind to each other. It’s because of who you are miracles are going to happen.

It’s a great tradition of Christmas.

Hancock’s ‘Nutcracker’ a treat for young and old

Classic gives way to contemporary as guests from ages 4 to 84 attend the third annual Nutcracker Tea Party prior dance to a matinee performance of Gregory Hancock Theatre’s modern interpretation of “The Nutcracker.”

Founded by Carmel’s Joanie Zigmond, the tea party harkens back to its roots of Victorian England. Guests enjoy a luncheon of English tea (or lemonade, if the youngsters prefer it), finger sandwiches, fresh fruit and vegetables and an assortment of sweets – complete with china tea cups, although patrons are welcome to bring their own favorite cup.

It’s hard to say who enjoys the event more, the youngsters or the adults.

“I’d say it is equal,” said Zigmond, who initially hosted the party in her house as a way to encourage family and friends to see Hancock’s production. “We have some ladies who wear tiaras, and this year one lady purchased five tables for her girlfriends.’’

Following the tea, guests are treated to a contemporary performance of the classic tale of “The Nutcracker.” In Hancock’s modern version, the lead character, Klara, is portrayed as an orphan girl who discovers the true meaning of the season through the giving spirit of a homeless man.

Area dance students and dancers of G2, Hancock’s pre-professional company, will give four performances, Dec. 4-6 at the Pike Performing Arts Center.

The tea party is sold out but tickets remain for the dance performances.

ZCHS show choirs’ Carol of Homes set for Dec. 5

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Holiday Home Tour visitors in Zionsville get a special treat as they will be serenaded by the Zionsville Community High music School show choirs.

The fourth annual Carol of Homes Holiday Home Tour, which is organized by the show choirs parents group, is set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 5. There will be a tour of six decorated homes.

The proceeds benefit the show choirs as they prepare for competition season. ZCHS show choir members pay $900 to participate.

“It actually costs $1,400 to participate,” said Erin Leonard, who is co-chair with Lorene Wright. “Even though it’s expensive to be in show choir, we take pride in that we try to keep our costs from going up year to year to the students.”

Leonard said all the homes are decorated to the home owners’ own style.

“We have different student groups who sing in each home during that day,” Leonard said. “They’ll see different ensemble groups, anywhere from a soloist to four or five kids.

They’ll be singing their favorite holiday songs as people tour the house.”

house. The Choralaires, an all-female group, and Royalaires, a mixed choral group, will be the performers. The Instrumental Combo and Backstage Crew will also participate.

As a way of giving back to the merchants, two groups of students will carol in downtown Zionsville from 10 a.m. to noon.

Leonard said only one show choir member’s home has been on the tour in the four years.

“Everybody in the community has stepped up in various ways,” Leonard said.

Margaret Harvey volunteered her house for the home tour after being a guest last year.

Harvey is president of the Indianapolis-based Chamberlain College of Nursing, which agreed

to be a gold sponsor. Bright House Networks is a silver sponsor.

Century 21 Scheetz Reality, 136 E. Sycamore St., is providing a warming center, where will there will be cookies, hot chocolate and chance to warm your hands by outdoor fire pit. Century 21 Scheetz also is working with show choirs to collect hats, gloves scarfs and mittens drive to donate for The Caring Center in Lebanon.

Time to write down your thoughts

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Mark Twain said, “Never put off till tomorrow what may be done the day after tomorrow just as well.” We say you’ll forget things the longer you procrastinate about writing them down. So after the last bratwurst is slathered in mustard and the last buffalo wing is enjoyed, it’s time for reflection on the season with its successes, failures and obvious places to make improvements. If you haven’t kept a notebook as the season went along, today is a good day to try to remember things from this season. Here is a simple check list: • What items of equipment do you need for next year? Remember tailgating/camping equipment goes on sale this time of year.

• What equipment that you have needs repair or replacement?

• What recipes were successful this year and what were not?

• What was the worst tailgating experience this season, and what was the best? Why? • Be honest and ask yourself, “What internal promises have I made to myself this season?”

Since you and your companions/family will be out shopping for Christmas and those needed tailgate items while they are on sale, you may want to prepare some old favorite Christmas treat recipes to enjoy on your shopping quest. If you like these treats you can make some more as gifts for times closer to Christmas Eve. Easy Fudge Recipe Ingredients: • 4 cups miniature marshmallows • 2/3 cup evaporated milk • 1/4 cup butter or margarine

• 1 1/2 cup sugar • 1/4 tsp. salt • 12 oz. semisweet chocolate pieces • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 1/2 cup chopped nuts Preparation: Combine marshmallows, milk, butter, sugar and salt in saucepan. Cook and stir until mixture comes to full boil. Boil five minutes over medium heat, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat and add chocolate pieces, beating until melted. Do not over beat, fold in vanilla and nuts, and pour into greased 9-inch square pan. Chill until firm. This will make 2 1/2 pounds.

Every year my boy’s elementary school in California hosted a carnival with rides, talent shows, and among other things a famous chili contest. For three consecutive years, the same family took home the trophy for the “Tastiest Ever” chili! The recipe was classified as “TOP SECRET.” My mission became to recreate this tasty meal as close as the winning family’s! Over the years I’ve tried many different recipes and variations. My toughest critiques, my boys and husband officially awarded a medal to this dish! Note: Serve warm chili with plain rice with a spoon of sour cream or pile it on tortilla chips and sprinkle with shredded cheese or with cornbread.

Prep/cook time: about 45 minutes Serves: 8 Ingredients: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, 1 green bell pepper, large diced, 1 red bell pepper, large diced, 1/2 red onion, large diced, 2 cloves of garlic, minced, 2 1/2 pounds ground chuck, 2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon paprika, 3 tablespoons ground cumin, 1 teaspoon oregano, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes, 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste, 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed (optional), 2 table-

spoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves Directions: Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Cook onions until soft and translucent, add garlic, peppers until slightly tender. In the same pot, brown meat breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Add spices, sugar and mix all well. Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste and beans, give it a good stir, put a lid on the pot and turn down the heat to simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If sauce is drying out add a couple of tablespoons of water. Sauce should look thick, moist and juicy. Taste for seasoning. Turn off the heat and leave chili to stand for about 10 minutes before serving so flavors can blend.

Fit over 50: Exercise tips Commentary by Kirsten Kaisner-Duncan, MD Establishing a consistent exercise routine is important at any age. For women ages 50 and older, however, regular women exercise counters many of the effects of aging. It helps alleviate menopause symptoms, improves sleep and elevates mood. It’s also beneficial for weight management and preventing more serious conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.

Elaborate planning isn’t necessary to get the exercise you need. In fact, one important factor is simply to ensure you’re doing some physical activity every day. Household chores, errand running and yard work are ways to maintain a basic level of fitness. And although you don’t need a gym membership to stay active, a well-rounded fitness program should include: • Aerobic activity – Find time to do some aerobic exercise at least three to four days a week. You can benefit from as little as 20 minutes. Walking, jogging and swimming are good choices. Aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular health and strengthens muscles.

• Strength training – This can be accom-

plished with simple hand weights. Start with a lighter weight, and then gradually work your way up, increasing repetitions as your workouts progress. This type of training maintains bone strength, helps tone and improves posture.

• Stretching – Maintaining balance, range of motion and flexibility is increasingly important as we age. Stretching helps, and again, the activity doesn’t have to be strenuous. Simple stretches in the morning and/or before bed are a good way to start. For a more structured approach to stretching, consider yoga or Pilates.

While it’s never too late in life to begin exercising, it’s best to talk with your doctor first.

Productive living is easier when we’re healthy, strong and energized. Regular exercise goes a long way in preparing women in their 50s and beyond to enjoy this time of life.

Local shops fill Hallmark void

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com This summer two local Hallmark stores closed their doors, leaving a void for many consumers who relied upon these shops for greeting cards, wrapping retailers paper and novelties.

The Wooden Key Hallmarks in Boone Village and on Michigan Road were among 22 other stores that closed in Illinois and Indiana under the same franchise owner. With the holiday season in full swing, Zionsville residents may wonder how to fill the void of holiday cards and decorations.

Beyond mass retailers, many small businesses in the Village offer unique options.

Ganache, known for its handmade truffles, also has the largest selection of greeting cards in the Village. The Pine Street shop has a selection of individual cards for upcoming holidays and packs of Christmas cards as well as placemats and napkins.

Central Indiana’s real estate market remains a balancing act between available inventory and sale prices. real estate Sale prices rose 4.3 percent last month compared to October 2014, while active listings declined 7.6 percent. In addition, the nine-county region saw a 15.3 percent dip in pended home sales last month. However, home sales are still up 7 percent for the year.

Boone County was the only county to defy the trend in October. The county had an increase in inventory, at 1.2 percent. The

average year-to-date sale price for the county declined 3.7 percent to $271,276.

In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sale price dropped 4 percent compared to this time last year, decreasing to $373,188.

Inventory moved at a slower pace in Zionsville in October 2015 compared to October 2014. Overall, homes sold in 93 days – 19 days slower than this time last year.

I would argue that selecting your sink is one of the most important decisions you will make during home improvement your kitchen remodel. Jerusalem’s Holy Wall

A section of a 2,000-year-old wall is the world’s holiest place for many Jews.

In 19 B.C., Judea’s King Herod travel began building a trapezoidalshaped retaining wall around the plateau on which Jerusalem’s Second Temple stood. Workers filled in the voids, creating a 37-acre paved platform. Herod expanded the temple located near the western wall of this “Temple Mount.” Each Yom Kippur, the High Priest entered the Temple’s Holy of Holies, experiencing the presence of God. In 70 A.D., during the First Jewish Revolt, Roman soldiers demolished Herod’s Temple.

Rabbis advised Jews to shun the Temple Mount to avoid inadvertently encountering the area of the Holy of Holies, so they began praying at the “Western Wall” below. After the Second Jewish Revolt in 135, the Roman Empire banned Jews from Jerusalem. In about 325, Emperor Constantine allowed Jews to lament the loss of their Temple once each year at the Western Wall, which Christian residents disparagingly called the Jews’ “Wailing Wall.”

In 1560, Ottoman Emperor Suleiman allowed Jews to pray at a section of the Western Wall near houses in the Moroccan Quarter.

Question: I need some help here: I see the words “cache” and “cachet” more and more often, and I grammar guy want to make sure I’m using them correctly. Are they interchangeable?

Answer: If there’s a recurring theme in these columns, it’s that words that came to us from French often trip us up. That’s certainly the case here. Let’s see what we can do.

“Cache” is the more likely of the two words for you to be familiar with. It means a “collection of items of the same type stored in a hidden or inaccessible place” – or sometimes just the hiding place itself. It’s also used in computing to refer to a temporary storage space, like your browser cache. Speaking of which … never hurts to clear that out, folks.

“Cachet” you don’t see as much – or at least I don’t. It means a “distinguishing mark

In the 1948 war following Israel’s independence, Jordan captured East Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount, and barred Jews from the Western Wall. In 1967, Israel gained control of East Jerusalem and razed the Moroccan Quarter, creating a plaza along a section of the Western Wall. A screen now divides the plaza so men and women can pray separately, many by inserting slips of paper between the wall’s massive blocks. How even God can resolve these conflicting claims is not clear.
