Zionsville’s Easterday named Business Leader of the Year

Tom Easterday’s impact as a business and community leader has not gone unnoticed.

The former Zionsville achievement Town Council president was named Business Leader of the Year Nov. 7 at the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s 28th annual awards dinner in Indianapolis.

Easterday, who has lived in Zionsville for 31 years, is the senior executive vice president, secretary and chief legal officer at Subaru Indiana Automotive in Lafayette.

“Tom has really been instrumental in growing and leading SIA to be one of the most highly rated, well-respected automotive assembly facilities in the country,” Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar said. “Tom is very calm and very thoughtful. I’ve been to that facility several times, and when you walk around with him, you pick up how admired he is, how well-respected he is and how wellliked he is by the associates there. Tom sets the tone. He is so thoughtful and insightful.

I’ve seen him in board meetings and group settings where he lets the debate go on, but then when Tom speaks, people really listen.

And far more often than not, they do what he suggests and recommends.”

Easterday was quick to share the credit.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized, and it really serves as recognition for the great teams I’ve worked with here at Subaru Automotive and the number of fantastic government, community and business leaders that I’ve had the pleasure to work with on a number of issues,” Easterday said.

before production began in 1989. He started as corporate counsel and is the first American to be appointed to the SIA board of directors.

“In the last four years, we have added over 2,000 new jobs at SIA in Lafayette,” Easterday said. “We’ve been growing quite a bit, and we are now the fastest-growing automaker in America right now.”

Easterday’s son Matt, 29, is a longtime Special Olympics athlete. His wife, Deb, is chair of the board of directors of Special Olympics Indiana. His daughter, Anne Bohm, 32, and her husband, Clinton, have three sons.

Along with Special Olympics, Easterday is passionate about Boy Scouts. He was a Boy Scout and so was his father, Ed. Easterday served on the Zionsville Town Council from 1994 to 1999 and was president from 1995 to 1999.

Elwood man arrested for residential burglary

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com An Elwood man was arrested for allegedly breaking into a Zionsville home late Nov. 16 and stealing electronpublic safety ics, tools and more.

Police were called to the 100 block of Spring Drive at 11:54 p.m.

Nov. 16 with reports of a burglary in progress.

The homeowners called police after their dog started barking and they heard a door slam, according to police records.

Zionsville police arrested Stephen James Gall, 40, after initiating a traffic stop on a

2001 Buick LeSabre at Sycamore Street and US 421. Officers observed Gall’s vehicle leaving the area of the burglary shortly after it was reported. Gall told officers he was turning around in the neighborhood because he was lost and that his girlfriend was in the hospital, a police report states.

Officers discovered Gall with more than $1,600 worth of items in the vehicle that Gall the homeowners said were stolen, including an iPad, Nook, sound bar, jacket, headphones and tools, the report

states.

The homeowners told police they found their garage door and vehicle doors open and that they had previously been closed. They also noticed open drawers in a dining room and an unused bedroom.

Police suspect Gall allegedly entered the house by using a garage door opener in an unlocked vehicle in the driveway, the police report states.

Gall has been charged with burglary, residential entry, possession of marijuana and theft.

The incident is still under investigation. A jury trial is scheduled for March 12, 2018.

ZIONSVILLE/ WHITESTOWN C.R. 400 S./425 S. is closed CONSTRUCTION between C.R. 650 E. and 750 E as crews work on the 300 S./400 S. connector project in east Whitestown. Two lanes are under construction, although ultimately it is planned to be a four-lane, divided roadway. The project is expected to continue into 2018.

CARMEL A water main upgrade is under way on Range Line Road between City Center and Executive drives. Once the water main is relocated, traffic will move to the inner lanes of Range Line Road for work on the outer lanes. The road will remain open throughout the project.

River Road is closed between 146th Street and Community Drive for a reconstruction project, which was expected to be complete near Thanksgiving. The project will include a two-lane boulevard and a new roundabout at Cherry Creek Boulevard.

Spring Mill Road is closed between 106th and 116th streets, with additional lane restrictions between Main Street and Mallard Court. The road is expected to reopen in December.

The slip lane allows vehicles to turn right without entering the intersection and disturbing other vehicles.

Lance Lantz, superintendent of the department, said he has received comments from drivers who said the slip lane causes

confusion about where to stop and who should go through the intersection first.

“Many years ago when traffic was light in the area, it didn’t seem to be problematic, but as development has increased in that area, it has really led to some confusion,” Lantz said.

“It’s not an efficient intersection.”

The four-way stop is already in effect and the department will remove the slip lane in the winter. Asphalt was added to the northeast corner of the four-way stop to create space for right turns.

Lantz said the department plans to turn the intersection into a roundabout in the future.

Tiny houses will dot Lions Park Dec. 8 through 10 with a new event, Tiny Wonderland, featuring professionhousing ally and owner-built homes decorated for the holidays.

The public can tour the homes, ask questions of the builders and learn about the tiny house movement.

“Whether you are just an enthusiast or hoping to purchase a unit or just wanting to walk through, (there will be) tons of different design ideas,” said Zionsville resident Maggie Daniels, who is organizing the event.

Tiny Wonderland is hosted by Try It Tiny, a website dedicated to tiny home rental created by Daniels. She said many of the homes at the event will be available for rent.

“If people were thinking about trying it tiny and they still want to see it before trying it, that’s an option, too,” she said.

Daniels expects at least 20 tiny homes in Lions Park decorated for the holidays.

Because most tiny homes are on wheels, it’s easier for builders to transport them.

“That does facilitate the ability for the builders from outside the state and surrounding area to bring them in for the event,” she said. “We’ll shuffle them out when the event concludes.”

The idea was inspired by similar festivals dedicated to tiny house living throughout the nation, including one in Indianapolis last year.

Tickets are available online at TryItTiny. com for $10 or at the event for $15. Children 10 and younger are free. Tiny Wonderland will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Whitestown plans 11-acre park

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com The Whitestown Parks and Recreation Dept. is developing plans for an 11-acre park off Main Street near the recreation Walker Farms subdivision. The concept drawing includes two basketball courts, three tennis courts, a splash pad, playground, turf play area, sledding hill, one large shelter with restrooms and a few smaller shelters scattered throughout the park. It also is planned to incorporate the community gardens already in use.

The town currently has access to 7 acres, which is land donated by the Walker Farms developer. The other 4 acres belong to Beazer Homes. Nathan Messer, parks director, said Beazer plans to donate that land if the town can help with its drainage issues.

The town had previously discussed using the land for a new town hall, or a police station, in the area. Messer said officials ultimately decided to create a multi-use park because it’s something the town lacks.

“When you come up with a plan like that, you’re never sure how people are going to react,” Messer said. “I had a strong feeling they were going to be happy and excited,

but I think the excitement behind it is more than I expected. It definitely fits the need and desire for that park.”

With the concept drawing complete, the department’s next step is to present the town council with funding options for the $4 million project. Messer said he is working with attorneys and accountants to find the best funding source.

Messer wants to begin construction next spring, and if all goes well, open the park in the fall.

Author and photograrecreation pher Jay Cossey will discuss his book, “Familiar Butterflies of Indiana,” at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the nature center, 690 Beech St. “I brought him in because the book itself is really nice,” said Mindy Murdock, nature center manager. “It shows not only the butterflies but a lot of what the caterpillar looks like. It’s a one-stop field guide for someone that is really interested in butterflies or which ones are coming to their flowers in their garden.”

Cossey likes to say he’s been nominated as an honorary Hoosier even though he lives in Canada.

“My best friends live in Indiana, so I’ve spent a lot of time in your beautiful state,” Cossey stated in an email. “I’ve taken thousands of photographs in Indiana, mostly in Indianapolis and in the rolling hills of Martin County.”

The Town of Zionsville held the first of three open houses Nov. 16 to gather input on its five-year master master plan plan for its parks. Zionsville residents and others with ties to the community visited with project leaders at Town Hall to provide thoughts and discuss ideas.

Tatijana Marsee of Indianapolis, who works for the American Cancer Society, attended the open house to see what is in development. ACS works with Zionsville parks for programs and fundraising events.

“We have a great partnership with the parks department for use of their space for programs we run,” Marsee said.

Megan Swain, a lifelong Zionsville resident, is excited to see how the town’s growth will shape park development.

“I basically grew up in Lions Park as a kid here, and now that I live here again, it will be exciting to see what the future holds,” she said.

Jason Preston of Zionsville attended for multiple reasons.

“I appreciate the chance to come and see the new developments and the big picture and look forward to seeing the public’s input in the future,” he said.

Zionsville Supt. of Parks and Recreation Matt Dickey said the master plan will cover a variety of aspects relating to parks.

on infrastructure improvements but will also address policy and program updates to provide a parks system which meets the needs of its residents,” he said.

The town also is collecting feedback through an online survey at surveymonkey. com/r/Zionsvilleparksplan through Dec. 18.

Enjoy birds, coffee at ZNC

The Zion Nature Center is offering free coffee, tea or hot chocolate nature to visitors who want to learn about birds and watch them feed. For the fourth year, ZNC is participating in “Project FeederWatch,” which is run through the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology.

The sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of the month through March 2018 (although in January 2018 the meeting will be on the second Saturday). Project FeederWatch is a nationwide research study. In its 24th year, it involves more than 15,000 participants counting birds at their feeders as often as once per week and sending their observations to scientists at the Cornell lab. The reports help Cornell scientists better understand bird population trends and movements.

“Project FeederWatch is for all bird lovers,” said Mindy Murdock, Zion Nature Center park naturalist and manager. “Visitors can ask questions, like if you have questions about how to set up feeders, or the best time to watch, what types of food for what types of birds, or what to do if you have a hawk.”

Staff will discuss ways to attract birds to back yards this winter. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be provided but attendees must bring their own mug.

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com For this year’s Secret Snowflake Shop, children can shop for a special pet on their list as well as family library members.

The fourth annual event at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library is an opportunity for children to buy holiday gifts for important people in their lives. Each gift is $3, which includes wrapping.

To help reduce waiting in line, shoppers are encouraged to pre-register for one of four blocks of time. When they arrive, they’ll receive a group number and will be able to do activities around the library until their group is called.

“The hope is they’ll have a better sense of time to make it a more pleasurable shopping experience,” said Erin Czajkowski, co-chair for the event hosted by Friends of the Library.

The addition of gifts for pets, primarily cats and dogs, was inspired by children’s requests in previous years. Gifts for people are available for all ages.

Because parents aren’t allowed, shopping assistants aid children with their lists.

While children are in the Snowflake Shop, parents can browse silent auction items created by Friends of the Library, with proceeds going to library programming.

The shop is open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 2. Registration for specific time slots can be made through ZionsvilleLibrary.org.

When Zionsville was founded in 1852, the Victorian era had recently begun. So bringing Victorian Holidays to the holidays SullivanMunce Cultural Center seemed like a natural fit to museum staff volunteer Candace Ulmer.

“It’s history,” Ulmer said.

“We were of that Victorian era.”

Festivities begin Dec. 2 when a direct-to-NorthUlmer Pole mailbox will be unveiled by Mrs. Claus, who will also share ideas of treats her husband enjoys. Letters left in the mailbox by Dec. 21 that include a self-addressed, stamped envelope will receive a response from Santa. Ringing a bell after leaving a letter will alert nearby elves to collect it.

Children’s crafts that day will have a Victorian theme. Plenty of food will be available between freshly baked items from the SullivanMunce Guild along with a chili bowl sale. Bowls can be filled for free after purchase. The food- and microwave safe-bowls are made in the art center, with proceeds going back to the clay studio.

Ulmer said she wants to tie into the town’s history during Victorian Holidays and to share holiday customs from the time the town began.

“It’s to bring back old traditions,” she said.

The Victorian Afternoon Tea brings these traditions back to Zionsville from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 16. Although the program is free, reservations by Dec. 9 are required. Savories and tea will be served with a lesson about Christmas and high tea customs.

During the Victorian Holidays, art by local artists of all ages and abilities is on display in the gallery through Dec. 16 as part of the First Come, First Hung annual exhibition.

Artists lined up the morning of Nov. 18, with the first 35 selected to show their artwork, most of which is for sale.

Annual events spark holiday spirit in downtown Zionsville

By Heather Lusk • news@currentinzionsville.com It was 15 years ago when Johnny Vargo, owner of Rush on Main, first experienced Christmas in the Village.

“Honestly, that’s what brought us to cover story Zionsville,” he said. “It was like a scene from a movie.”

When he and his wife saw snow falling on businesses, decorations in the shops and a Christmas tree in the middle of Main Street, they changed their plans to build a house elsewhere and found a home in Zionsville.

Drawing new people into the Village is a goal of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce committee that organizes the Christmas in the Village events. The month of festivities also serves as a thank you to residents, according to Lesley Hunt, owner of Lesley Jane, who leads the committee.

Although several committee members such as Hunt have been involved for many years, all of the chamber of commerce staffers are newcomers.

“We’re learning as we go. We’re enjoying the process as we go,” said Tracy Coussens, the chamber’s event coordinator. “You don’t reinvent Christmas. We’re just adding Zionsville’s stamp to it.”

The committee tries to introduce new elements each year to build on what has been successful in the past.

“You want it to stay fresh,” said Erica Carpenter, owner of Five Thirty Home.

Carpenter experienced Christmas in the Village for the first time after opening her Main Street shop five years ago.

“This was the cutest thing ever,” said Carpenter, who dove into Christmas in the Village details.

Those details make the month of events challenging each year, according to Carpenter. Among the challenges is finding enough volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“The thing that you learn doing this is that you have to be flexible, because things will happen,” Hunt said.

ALL IN THE FAMILY Every weekend, something different for kids is incorporated into the festivities.

is to make this a family event, to keep that hometown, homespun feel to everything we do,” Hunt said.

Throughout the month, families can take free horsedrawn wagon rides through the Village.

On Dec. 3 and 17, Five Thirty Home will sponsor rock painting. Hidden rocks that are found can be posted to the Zionsville Rocks and Boone County Rocks Facebook pages.

A special Christmas in the Village rock will be hidden in mid-December. The finder will receive special prizes.

Last year’s popular Elf Scavenger Hunt returns Dec. 9, starting in Boone Village. Kids search for clues throughout the downtown area to win prizes at stops along the way.

Families can take a break to decorate cookies at zWORKS, thanks to a donation by Zionsville United Methodist Church.

NOT JUST FOR KIDS Carpenter’s favorite event is Ladies Night Dec. 7, when women can catch up with girlfriends and share shopping ideas. “It’s a good opportunity

to start to make a mental list or pen-and-paper list,” Carpenter said.

During the Christmas Crawl Dec. 14, participating shops and restaurants will offer signature food and drinks during the evening, with karaoke starting at 9 p.m. at Rush on Main.

“It gives everyone a night a little bit different for Zionsville,” Vargo said. “We just hope that everyone jumps everywhere.”

LAST DASH On Dec. 21, free gift wrapping will be provided by zWORKS members as a team-building project for the coworking space.

“As a startup, you don’t have that corporate culture yet and those service opportunities,” zWORKS Executive Director Kate Swanson said.

Because of his heavy workload before the big day, Santa will be unavailable during the weekend, but Three Dog Bakery will sponsor a reindeer food station so that children can prepare something special for the big guy’s herd.

SPECIAL EVENTS Weekend parking will be easier all month with the Shopping Shuttle between Lions Park, SullivanMunce Cultural Center, Main Street and Boone Village. The trolley that has transferred passengers for several years is in need of repair, so Zionsville United Methodist Church will provide a bus to help transport shoppers.

Many retailers host their own events during the month, and many will have goods only available in December.

Inga’s Popcorn offers special flavors like Snowstorm and Christmas Cookie at the new Cedar Street location. Patrons can purchase large portions of Cobblestone’s side dishes.

CV Art and Frame has annually hosted a Thomas Kincaid Disney event but this year will bring in a special legacy artist formerly with Disney Studios to offer lessons on drawing characters Dec. 1 to 3. We, each and every one of us, is held captive, at least a bit, by our own experiences and acculturation. For many years we regaled the French spouse of a close friend of the sublime humor in the sophomoric romp “Caddyshack.” Routinely, we would repeat lines, giggling in our own command of the low-brow script. Finally, we arranged to host a private screening of the classic. Seven natives and one not-sonative viewed, with beer in hand, as Judge Elihu Smails and the now-storied cast of characters delivered our beloved one-liners.

Our sides aching from laughter, the film closed as Carl’s nemesis, a plump, dancing gopher, boogied us out of the theater to the catchy Kenny Loggins tune. Now, we turned to our continental comrade – you must surely understand why we love this film so.

“Hmm,” she replied cautiously, “it was fun, but, I’m still not sure that I get it.” Crestfallen, we realize that some things might not translate. The French popularity of Jerry Lewis makes sense. The French love of Jerry Lewis is more difficult to sort out.

Variances of our perspective are difficult to sort out. Some refuse to consider the value of another point of view. And some, as if driven by some eternal shame, suppress the glory of their own. As we consider the proper role for Jerry Lewis comedy in the storehouse of great culture, is his contribution superior to that of greenskeeper Carl Spackler? Who decided what matters – and, more importantly, what doesn’t? After all, Carl’s the one who reminded us Gunga Galunga, as the frugal Dali Llama offered in leu of a caddy’s tip, “When you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So, I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.” Yes, Carl, it is nice. Treasure it.

It has been a long time since I’ve been nervous for one of my kids. Years of (insert sport/extracurricular activhumor ity here) Mom experiences and calls from teachers have desensitized my physiological reactions to their performances, high-stakes tests and various academic/employment applications.

And now that we’ve successfully launched one off to college, I understand that a few failures along the way will do more for a child than a record-breaking season or a straight-A’s semester. Suffice it to say, I don’t freak very easily over my children’s exploits.

Nevertheless, there are still moments when I want to cry and vomit and cower in the back of my mini-van mumbling every Catholic prayer I know. One of those was yesterday while my younger son attempted to pass the road exam for his driver’s license during a downpour of Biblical proportions in a flooded town known for its obscene number of roundabouts. Seriously, conditions couldn’t have been worse, and he was already anxious about his parallel parking, which earlier had been abysmal.

After I dropped him off with the instructor, I immediately headed for the nearest empty lot to panic. Although I remained in the driver’s seat, I did fight back tears and say 10 Hail Marys. This kid needed a win. Please, God, give him a win! But it was completely out of my control.

He passed, and nailed the parallel parking! More importantly, I added another layer of parenting experiences to my emotional armor. I hope it’s enough. His twin tests tomorrow.

Eye disease and Ellis Island Commentary by Ward Degler I was thinking about Ellis Island the other day. My father used to brag that his ancestors came plain talk through the immigration center shortly after the Civil War. He was wrong, of course.

As it turns out, the first Deglers arrived in this country in the early 1700s, long before Ellis Island existed.

My mother quietly put dad in his place with the news that her family arrived during the Mayflower era. She was plagued all her life by folks wanting her to join the Daughters of the American Revolution.

That’s not why I was thinking about Ellis Island, however. I was musing about the place because I just had an eye examination and learned I have glaucoma in one eye. Thousands of immigrants were refused admission to the U.S. because of eye disease.

I thought it was glaucoma, a condition caused when drainage canals become blocked. The scourge at Ellis Island, however, was trachoma. Much worse.

Trachoma is caused by a bacterial infection that causes the inside of the eyelid to become rough. The roughness abrades the eye and causes blindness. It is highly contagious, but treatable.

Anyone arriving at Ellis Island with trachoma was sent back home. Thousands of the 12 million immigrants who arrived at the immigration center between 1892 and 1954 were denied entry to America.

For most of its history, Ellis Island was believed to be part of New York. In 1998, however, the Supreme Court ruled that it actually belonged to New Jersey. Ellis Island was closed in 1954 and was abandoned for more than 10 years until it was taken over by the National Park Service and declared part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. In 1982, the government launched an extensive renovation project, and today Ellis Island is a popular museum.

It’s interesting that while trachoma is now curable, glaucoma isn’t. And I still can’t believe my dad missed the family arrival date by more than a hundred years.

Hold the mayo Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen and I recently exchanged a few words over mayonnaise. Sometimes condiments can be seen as an humor insult to the chef. Like ketchup, for example. When I pour Heinz over my wife’s beef bourguignon, we always get into a stew.

It all started one morning when Mary Ellen was searching for the sugar and noticed that I had accidentally placed the opened mayonnaise jar in the cupboard rather than back in the fridge the night before. Mary Ellen then tossed the jar in the garbage, along with this denouement: “It’s no good. We have to throw it out.” I begged to differ. I couldn’t accept the product’s ruin in just a few hours. I say if you can’t fight off bacteria overnight, you’re not worth the preservatives you’re made of.

The next day, desperate for a smear on my BLT, I fished the mayonnaise out of the garbage and slathered it on my bread.

Hours later my son stopped by and made himself an egg salad sandwich. When Mary Ellen discovered what I had done, she panicked. “Are you trying to wipe out the entire family?”

I read the mayonnaise label. It did say: REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING. There was an 800 number next to that warning, a hotline for people with emergency mayonnaise questions.

“Hello, you’ve reached the Mayonnaise Hotline.”

“Hi. I have a question about food poisoning.”

“This is the mayonnaise hotline, not the Mayo Clinic. I know what you’re going to ask. Husbands call all day long with this question. Look, our mayonnaise is loaded with acids that can actually kill bacteria.

And the eggs used in prepared mayonnaise are pasteurized. It’s perfectly safe to eat.”

“So I shouldn’t throw it out?”

“Of course you should throw it out! A man can’t win a mayonnaise argument with his wife.”

He was right, of course. I didn’t tell Mary Ellen about my phone call. It would have been Hellman’s to pay.

“It’s time,” owner Susan retail Schube said. “It’s been a great run. I’m leaving Main Street, I’m not leaving Zionsville.”

Schube opened the store in 1990 with partner Terry Johnson, who died in 2013.

The store sells fine art, estate items and custom-designed jewelry, but one distinguishing factor has been fountain pen sales and restoration.

“I’m holding history in my hands and restoring it to usefulness,” said Schube, who restores the pens herself. “A fountain pen is a utilitarian thing that can be a work of art.”

The store could close as early as the beginning of 2018.

All items in the store are on sale at varying prices.

As for what’s next, the future is unclear.

“It’s an evolution of how I run the business, and how things continue and how things don’t continue,” Schube said. An internet store which opened in 1999 will continue.

It’s the human interaction that Schube will miss the most, such as when people browse the shop, ask directions or look for a restaurant recommendation. She has seen families evolve through the years and watched their children grow up.

She also will miss the positive reaction to her custom jewelry designs, knowing that many pieces will be family heirlooms.

“A little piece of me goes with it,” Schube said. “So whatever happens to me, there’s a little Susie running around maybe making somebody’s granddaughter, somebody’s grandson happy.”

Feeling pressure to heal

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Helping to address aches and pains with handson healing techniques, Ingrid Schwegler has brought a combination of reiki reflexology and reflexology to Zionsville for the past year at her business, From Seed to Bloom. She now wants to add ortho-bionomy to bring immediate relief to clients’ sore spots.

Through reflexology, pressure is applied to areas of the feet to impact other parts of the body and internal organs. Reiki is a concept of channeling energy into a specific area of the body. Both work with the nervous system to indirectly relieve stress patterns.

“If our blood doesn’t flow well in our body, it creates blockages somewhere. It’s the same thing for our nerve impulse,” Schwegler said. “Every time there is tension and there is blockage, things cannot flow properly, and that’s how over time we create disease.”

Ortho-bionomy provides direct therapy to the tendons or joints of a specific area, such as a shoulder.

“From a physical and mental standpoint, if I can touch your shoulder in a way that’s going to create some immediate relief, that’s an enhancement to what I do today,” she said.

Born in Switzerland, Schwegler was a biochemist before learning about reiki from her massage therapist.

When she attended her first reiki training, she wasn’t sure what to expect.

“I didn’t really know what I was going to do with that, but it just kind of opened something up,” she said.

A few years later, Schwegler took a reflexology class at Peace Through Yoga. During the training, she realized by coincidence she’d taken the class 25 years earlier.

“I suddenly remembered everything and realized that, ‘Ok, that’s what I need to do,’” she said.

Schwegler was planning to open a full-time practice in Carmel in early 2016 when space in The Wessell Building on Zionsville’s First Street opened.

“This is what I’m called to do,” she said.

By Tom Blessing Indiana Special Education Attorney Hollingsworth & Zivitz tblessing@hzlegal.com I get lots of calls from parents whose special needs children do things which get them in trouble at public schools, leading to suspension, expulsion, placement in an interim setting and even juvenile criminal charges. Sometimes schools will call parents (often repeatedly) asking them to come pick up their child from school early if the child is having a rough day. The law gives substantial protections to students in special education as well as those who do not yet have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) if the school had reason to suspect the child had a disability.

Many parents think they don’t have a choice when the school proposes putting their child on a half-day schedule or asks them to come pick him up early, but under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), disabled students are generally entitled to attend public school for the same hours as their typical peers; they can’t be sent home early or put on a shortened school day schedule just because their behaviors are difficult to manage.

The legal term for taking a child out of his classroom for disciplinary reasons is a “removal,” and a removal for any portion of a school day is considered a removal for the whole day: if your child is sent home 5 hours into a 6-hour school day, that counts as an entire day out of school. A removal can range from making a child sit in the hallway or sending him to the office up to suspension or expulsion. Schools can generally remove disabled students for up to 10 days without providing services, but the law requires schools to follow certain procedures to remove a student for more than 10 days in a given school year. A

removal of a student for more than 10 consecutive school days or a series of removals that constitute a pattern is considered a “disciplinary change of placement.” The law requires public schools to follow certain procedures before making a disciplinary change of placement of students with disabilities, so I recommend consulting a special education lawyer if you find your child in this situation.

I recommend documenting it every time you are called by the school to come pick up your child so you can keep track of the removals. You may be entitled to compensatory educational services to make up for the lost time. If your child is being removed for more than 10 days (expelled), the law requires the school to hold what’s called a manifestation determination conference. This is a meeting with school staff to determine if the child’s behavior was related to his disability or if the school failed to follow his IEP, in which case the school has to conduct a functional behavior assessment (FBA) of the student. If you disagree with the outcome of the manifestation determination you may appeal it by filing a request for a due process hearing.

Students who are charged with offenses involving drugs, weapons or serious bodily injury may be placed in an interim school setting for up to 45 days even if the behavior was related to their disability. An Independent Hearing Officer can order a student placed in an interim setting for up to 45 days if she believes the student is substantially likely to injure someone at school. I’ve had a couple cases where schools tried to place a student in an interim setting even though his conduct did not meet the criteria for that, so it’s a good idea to consult a special education attorney if your child’s school schedules a manifestation determination conference.

Oak Ridge Boys bring show to The Palladium

Don’t worry, Richard Sterban assures, this might be a Christmas show, but the Oak Ridge Boys will deficoncert nitely be singing their biggest hit.

“I get asked that all the time, ‘Even though it’s a Christmas show, are we still going to hear ‘Elvira?’ The answer is, ‘Yes, you will,’” Sterban said. “That’s the law.

The Oak Ridge Boys must do ‘Elvira.’”

The Oak Ridge Boys’ holiday tour will stop at The Palladium in Carmel at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7.

“Believe it or not, this is going to be our 29th annual Christmas tour, and we have been rehearsing Christmas music since sometime in September,” said Sterban, the group’s bass singer. “Our Christmas shows have become a big, big part of our year. We’ve become known for our Christmas music and have seven Christmas albums.”

The latest one, “The Oak Ridge Boys Celebrate Christmas,” is available at Cracker Barrel restaurants.

Sterban said the Christmas show is a bargain.

“It’s really two shows for the price of one,” Sterban said. “For about 45 minutes, we do our regular music, mostly our hits, that we do during our regular concerts.

We then take an intermission and do a complete Christmas show.”

Sterban said the songs cover all sides of Christmas, secular, fun and romantic.

Santa Claus makes an appearance and goes out in the audience. That is followed by what Sterban calls the rocking chair segment.

“The four Oak Ridge Boys sit in Cracker Barrel rocking chairs and sit in front of a fireplace. Each guy takes a turn talking about childhood Christmas memories,” Sterban said. “We talk about what it means to us individually and what Christmas music has meant to our career. It’s a great time for our fans to get to know the Oak Ridge Boys. It’s a highlight of the show. After that, we segue into a section with a song that talks about the true

meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus.

That’s very important to us and our fans.

It’s a great way for families to spend time together around the holiday season.”

Sterban said the Christmas show is the same each night. During their regular concert, they might vary their set list each performance.

“There are several reasons for our longevity, but the No. 1 reason is we love doing what we do,” Sterban said. “We do not plan to retire any time soon.”

This lineup has been together since 1973.

Lewis, Pizzarelli pay tribute to Nat King Cole Jazz veterans Ramsey Lewis and John Pizzarelli combine forces to pay tribute to Nat King Cole at 8 p.m. Dec. 8 at The Palladium.

“It’s a combination of songs Nat King Cole recorded and made popular in his lifetime,” Lewis said. “His album, especially the one with the ‘Christmas Song,’ is on the charts every year. Then there are favorites of John and favorites of mine. We just end up having a lot of fun with those songs because Christmas

music is heartwarming and it’s that time of the year.”

Pianist Lewis is joined by his trio and Pizzarelli on guitar and vocals.

Lewis is looking forward to returning to The Palladium.

“It’s a wonderful place to play,” Lewis said. “The people are warm and inviting.

There might even be a sing-along, if they are good.”

Super brings magic to ZPAC

“Every day I thank the Lord I get the privilege to do what I do for a living,” Super said. “I’ve surpassed my wildest childhood dreams, and I hope I keep getting to do what I do until I’m too old to do it.”

Super, 41, was the winner of NBC’s “Phenomenon” in 2007, the show’s only season, and was a Top 12 finalist on “America’s Got Talent” in 2014.

Carmel Community Players is entering the festive fray with “Holiday Cabaret,” Dec. 1 to 3, at the Carmel Community Playhouse.

Directed by Perry and Vince Accetturo, the show distinguishes itself from the others by how it was generated.

“What makes our show unique is that it was created completely based on the performers that we have,” Perry said.

The performers range in age from 15 to 80 and come from a variety of backgrounds — from a trained opera singer to a local news reporter to an improv comedian who loves to sing.

The show is an intimate, cabaret-style performance featuring vocalists from across central Indiana who chose their own holiday favorites to perform – with the Accetturos’ approval, of course.

Beth She’an: History in a park Commentary by Don Knebel Beth She’an National Park in northern Israel provides a unique opportunity to observe the remains of a series of settlements from near the begintravel ning of civilization to the Byzantines.

Beth She’an is strategically located at the intersection of ancient trade routes about 17 miles south of the Sea of Galilee, just west of the Jordan River. According to archaeologists, residents of Beth She’an, who first settled in the area about 7,000 years ago, built a series of villages atop the ruins of earlier ones, creating an artificial hill called Tell el-Hisn (Castle Hill). In the 15th century B.C., Egyptians under Pharaoh Thutmose III captured the area and created an administrative and military center on the hill. In the 12th century B.C., the Egyptians lost control of the area to the Philistines, who had arrived from somewhere in the Mediterranean and used Beth She’an as their base. According to the Bible, the Philistines defeated King Saul at nearby Mt. Gilboa and hung his headless body on a

wall of Beth She’an. King David later drove the Philistines from the area, making Beth She’an part of the Kingdom of Israel. When the Assyrians conquered Israel in 732 B.C., they destroyed Beth She’an.

The Greeks, who conquered the area in the fourth century B.C., built a new city called Scythopolis at the base of Castle Hill.

When the Romans captured the area in 63 B.C., they expanded Scythopolis, adding a theater, a hippodrome and a colonnaded main street. By the first century, Scythopolis had become the capital of the Decapolis, a loose confederation of 10 Greco-Roman cities mentioned in the New Testament. By the fourth century, Scythopolis had become a Christian city, with a number of important churches.

There are many things to see and explore in northern Israel. Beth She’an National Park should be on everyone’s must-see list.
