Whitestown’s plans for the surrounding area include some residential development.

Ross Nixon, a civil engineer at American Structurepoint, hired by Van Trust, said contaminants would be self-contained in the property and neighboring water supplies would not be impacted by oil runoff or detention ponds.

Spivey asked that the development be delayed, if not halted, to give residents a chance to work with the developer to address concerns.

“We’d like to see you guys do the right thing and stick by us with the promises that were made when we annexed in,” Spivey said.

The proposal was continued to next month’s council meeting, scheduled for Dec. 3.

DISPATCHES MetroNet installing fiber optic network — MetroNet is working in the downtown Zionsville area in neighborhoods and near the library. It is also constructing in northeast Zionsville, east of 421. The crews should cause little, if any, traffic disruption. Residents will see a series of messages before construction activity begins in their neighborhood, including a letter, postcard and yard marker. Next, they will see crews identifying underground utilities and marking their locations with temporary paint. In the following days, MetroNet contractor teams will begin building the fiber optic network.

Adult clothing donations needed — The adult clothing closet at Love INC, a Boone County charity, is in need of adult sweatshirts and men’s jeans, waist size 34-42. Whiskerfest raises funds, awareness for humane society

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com The fourth annual Whiskerfest is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Whitestown Municipal Complex.

PET-FRIENDLY The event benefits the Humane Society for Boone County and will feature a craft show and pet photos with Santa.

“We used to just do pet photos with Santa and sometimes the lines were pretty long, so we thought, ‘This is boring for people to stand here in line and not do anything,’ so we came up with the idea to have a craft show with it,” said Susan Austin, HSBC director.

More than 30 vendors are scheduled to participate, including Pugs in the Kitchen, Just Stichin Dog Clothes, Forever Friends Great Dane Rescue, Scentsy and Whitestown Boy Scouts as well as local artisans featuring a variety of items ranging from hand paintings, wooden lettering, handmade fired pottery and homemade wreaths.

HSBC also will have dogs and cats availabale for adoption.

Microchipping, sponsored by Centier Bank, also will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. for $10.

“With the new animal control ordinances, it’s a requirement now that pets must either be chipped or have a tag on them, so we thought we’d make it easier for people,” Austin said. “Less than 25 percent of animals going into the shelter have a

microchip.”

A highlight of the event is pet photos with Santa.

“We bring pets in one way and take them out another way. We watch traffic very closely because we don’t want any fights, so we do recommend you only bring your friendly dogs,” Austin said. “If you really want a photo with a very special dog, come in and tell us and we can clear the room and take a photo with Santa.”

The suggested donation for a pet photo with Santa is $20 for printed and emailed digital photos. Photos will be taken from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cats and other animals are welcome.

Austin said they’ve seen pigs, goats, rabbits and even a pet skunk in previous years.

“Santa loves all animals. All we ask is that they must be well-behaved and the owners must be willing to clean up after (them),” Austin said.

Whiskerfest also helps raise awareness of HSBC, which opened in Lebanon more than 11 years ago.

“Still to this day, after 11 years, we find people who say, ‘Oh, my goodness, there is a Humane Society in Boone County?’ Yes, we are alive and well and finishing renovations at the shelter,” Austin said. “There is nothing better than to be one-on-one with people to answer questions and help them understand some of the needs in Boone County.”

Tri Kappa to play host to Santa Breakfast in Village

Zionsville’s Tri Kappa chapter will play host to its annual Santa Breakfast Dec. 1 in the Village, beginning HOLIDAY EVENT at 9 a.m.

Rae Hostetler, a member of Tri Kappa since 2012, first attended the Santa Breakfast as a guest when it was hosted at a local elementary school several years ago. She said she still has fond memories.

“Guests get a special VIP pass when Santa gets to his house at East Cedar Street and South Main Street right after breakfast,” Hostetler said.

Guests will be sent a customized event schedule outlining their upcoming holiday experience. They will get to meet Santa, say hello to Mrs. Claus and encounter characters from “The Nutcracker.”

Hostetler said the annual holiday breakfast fundraiser is a great way for families

to experience the Village and make holiday season memories.

“The merchants and restaurant owners who participate are very generous,” Hostetler said. “Restaurant staff members volunteer to open early, prepare the breakfast of their choice and serve it.”

Restaurant partners for the Santa Breakfast include Cobblestone, Greek’s Pizzeria, Auberge, Serenity and Rush on Main.

Merchants also have activities for kids.

Crafts will take place at My Sugar Pie and CV Art and Frame. Games and a family photo booth will be set up at zWORKS and story time for kids will be hosted by Goodman Jewelers and Black Dog Books. Southern Fancy will provide hot chocolate.

The meal will begin at 9 a.m. Other events will follow at 10 a.m. in the Village. Admission is $15 per person. Tickets can be purchased at zionsvilletrikappa.org.

All proceeds are returned to the community through grants to Boone County nonprofits and scholarships for Zionsville students.

The June 2 event celebrated the 70th anniversary of Porsche with a police-escorted drive into downtown Zionsville, where the cars were displayed on the brick street. The purpose of the family friendly festival was to raise funds and awareness about Alzheimer’s care, support and research. More than 100 Porsches participated in the June 2 parade and show, making CruZionsville the largest Porsche show in Indiana.

“Since 2010, CruZionsville (was) a very generous supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter,” Chapter Executive Natalie Sutton said. “There are at least five million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, including 110,000 Hoosiers. The funds raised

by CruZionsville helps Hoosiers and their caregivers facing the disease.”

The cars were judged by professional and amateur judges. Winners were presented awards in various categories. Car owners paid an entry fee to participate. The 2018 event raised more than $21,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association, bringing the eightyear total to more than $126,000.

During a Nov. 9 dinner celebration, Steve and Alice Tarr received an award from the Indiana Region of Porsche Club of America chairing the event during its eight-year run.

Steve Tarr said he is proud how the community came together to help with the event.

Recent forest fires remind me of my father

It’s the question that matters most to us.

How can we make your home more special and more perfect for the way you live?

I’ve been thinking about my dad recently.

He was a forester and spent a lot of days fighting forest fires. His career started with the U.S. Forest Service in PLAIN TALK the Civilian Conservation Corps camps of Wisconsin during the Great Depression.

This has been on mind because much of California has been ablaze recently, and these fires may prove to be the worst ever in terms of acres burned and homes destroyed. Although to my knowledge Dad never had to fight any big fires, he did have an ironic connection to two of the biggest fires in history.

Dad was born in 1910, one month after the fabled Big Burn Fire destroyed 3 million acres of timberland in just two days in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana. Twenty years later, he spent the summer as a Purdue forestry intern on fire watch in the same mountains. He once told me he had read reports of the Big Burn and spent that summer in constant fear of a new fire.

In Wisconsin a few years later, his CCC colleagues stood fire watch just a few miles from the site of the deadliest fire in U.S. history. The Peshtigo Fire destroyed nearly 4 million acres and killed between 1,500 and 2,500 people – virtually the entire population of the town of Peshtigo, Wis. Dad said the scars of that fire were still visible many

years later.

The thing that made this fire so deadly was it created its own wind and raced across the land at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Despite the staggering death toll, the Peshtigo Fire got very little attention because the Great Chicago Fire happened at exactly the same time. That legendary fire, which destroyed much of the Windy City, reportedly started when Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern. The Peshtigo Fire started from a controlled burn set by railroad workers to clear the right-ofway for new track.

Most of Dad’s work in Wisconsin was spent building firebreaks and planting trees in the Chequamegon National Forest. In 10 years, his CCC workers planted more than 10 million trees in those woods.

Years later, Dad managed the Forest Cropland program for the Missouri Conservation Commission – an initiative that applied new forest management practices in state and privately owned forestlands.

He fought few fires during the latter years of his career. Even so, each morning he would go outside and sniff the air. If he didn’t smell smoke, he would have a second cup of coffee.

Caring Center remodel provides more room to give back

As executive director of The Caring Center in Lebanon, Hanners reopened the organization’s doors in September after the building was renovated.

COVER STORY “The board asked me, ‘What do you need to be successful and make your job easier?’’’ Hanners said.

After 26 years with The Caring Center, Hanners knew what needed to be done. The remodel created a safer environment for volunteers and clients, made the entrance flow more naturally and added more office space.

Work began in August. During the seven-week construction interim, the food pantry had reduced hours and operated in tents outside of the building. Walls and a dropped ceiling were removed, creating a more open floor plan. The ceiling and insulation were painted black and doors were moved for a more natural flow of movement. A door for donations was widened to easily accept pallets of food and other materials.

Hanners said the timing was perfect because The Caring Center is entering the season of giving and expects to receive 40 to 50 tons of food during the next few months.

“People think of other people (during the holidays),” Hanners said.

Residents in need

More than 10,000 people in Boone County are impacted by food insecurity, which means they don’t have consistent access to nutritious food. A quarter of those are below the age of 18. The issue extends to all corners of the county, including Zionsville.

The Caring Center provides food, clothing and shelter to those in need and helps families avoid generational poverty through classes ranging from nutritional cooking skills to life skills.

The majority of The Caring Center donations come from Zionsville in the form of food, monetary gifts and volunteering.

“I feel like we’re finally getting our mission known, especially to the people here in Zionsville,” board member Jane Buroker said. “I think it’s eye-opening to some people to see how much poverty and hunger we still have in Boone County.”

Decorating for a cause

St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church is one of many places of worship that provides assistance to The Caring Center, leading food and clothing drives throughout the year.

The church will host a family gingerbread house decorating Dec. 8. Buroker hopes the holiday tradition will become

part of the local fabric while bringing in donations and increasing awareness for The Caring Center.

The new event will be underwritten by the R. L. Turner family. All ticket sales and proceeds from hot chocolate and snack bars will directly support The Caring Center. Attending families are asked to donated either a canned food item or a new toy.

“We’re hoping that as kids are building a gingerbread house, we can talk about what it means to give to other people,” Buroker said.

A morning and afternoon session are limited to 75 houses per session. Tickets and volunteer opportunities are available at TheCaringCenter.net.

A $25 ticket includes two seats and one gingerbread house. A $40 ticket includes four seats and two houses. The houses are on 8-inch by 9-inch bases and are pre-assembled so that families can easily decorate using the provided candy and frosting. Each house comes with a box for safe transportation after the event.

The Caring Center distributes 350 Thanksgiving meals each year, requiring a lot of donated food, such as: • 700 boxes of stuffing • 350 turkeys or chickens • 500 cans of cranberry sauce • 700 cans of broth • 700 cans of corn • 700 cans of green beans Meals often include pies, donated by Christ Lutheran and St. Francis Episcopal churches in Zionsville. Typically, the churches provide notes with their pies, aiming to make the recipients feel less lonely and more encouraged. Elizabeth Davidson, a member of St. Francis, began leading the project three years ago with her now late husband.

While many organizations collect toys to distribute to young children for the holidays, The Caring Center is the only one in Boone County that focuses specifically on gifts for Boone County teens in need.

“We want teenagers to know that they’re special, we’re thinking about them and we want to help them,” Hanners said. “Sometimes they get lost in the midst of everything.”

The Caring Center client families can shop for their teens during two days, selecting from donated hats, gloves, gift cards and clothing. They also can select a FUN PAK, which stands for Families Uniting Now Parents And Kids, containing games, baking materials or movies to provide free, family oriented fun.

Several Zionsville churches and Akard’s True Value will collect items for teens until Dec. 10. Last year, 112 teenagers received gifts through the program.

Synagogue attacks lead to discouragement, hope

Commentary by Terry Anker We live in an age of swift and irreversible judgment. Accusation, if acutely leveraged, has the effect of judge, jury and executioner. Our prejudices lead us to the warm corners of our own confirmation bias – we find and digest only that which agrees with that with which we already agree. Ordinarily, inconsequential or naïve utterances are used as blunt instruments to destroy decades-long careers, family relationships and trusted institutions. The English Bard, William Shakespeare, reminded us that “suspicion always haunts the guilty mind.” But he might have added note of the corrosive effect it has on us all.

Like the eroding result the irresistible forces of nature have on the seemingly impenetrable ancient stone fortresses, the constant aspersion of the detractors amongst us debases our trust in each other and in our communal organizations.

Seeming truisms – trust no one – become false demigods. Can we live in the complete absence of trust?

Should we? Is it even correct to imagine that not one human can be trusted – ever, in any circumstance?

Regardless, we plod on, wary of the motive and intention of others.

We isolate ourselves in eternally smaller identity groups, eager to exclude any who fail to conform to our increasingly doctrinaire vetting of their likely natures. The 1930s radio show character, The Shadow, claimed: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

The Shadow knows!” Yet, given his almost supernatural deductive powers, The Shadow still had to discern between actual guilt and its mere perception. Appearances deceive us. Motives are often complicated, and things are routinely not as they seem.

Avoiding December disasters Commentary by Danielle Wilson This is it, people. The season of parenting Olympics is upon us, and as a 20-year survivor of the most exhausting of HUMOR months, I’d like to offer some hard-earned advice. After all, we don’t want a repeat of 2009, do we?

• Just say no. No to making an extra batch of homemade sprinkle cupcakes for your first-grader’s teacher (she wants cash, anyway!). No to hosting a mother-daughter holiday tea for Scout Troop 176. And a big, fat no to anything that involves glitter and/or licking more than 11 envelopes.

• If you ignored No. 1 and said yes to Elf on the Shelf, there’s not a lot I can do for you now. My best advice is a late arrival (“Pickleknuckle’s flight was delayed. Stupid ATL”) and a fake broken leg (“Honey, it’s really hard for PK to move around. Santa said he should stay put”).

• Clearly articulate plans to all parties in advance, and if possible, in writing. Having definitive dates, times and locations ahead of time allows for the necessary mental and emotional preparation for dealing with in-laws, politically polarizing family and sugarcookie-crazed rugrats and provides opportunity for the stockpiling of Maker’s and the orchestration of multiple escape routes.

• Make lists. Check them twice. Gifts, chores, grocery, honey-do, Netflix mustwatches, “Reasons I Should Be Mom of the Year,” whatever.

Editor, I attended a Community Memorial Gathering (Nov. 1) at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation for the people who were recently killed at the synagogue in Pittsburgh. In one way, I feel discouraged at seeing acts of anti-Semitism rise 58 percent since 2016, but another part of my spirit is hopeful, and here is why.

There were more than 1,000 people from all faiths present to show their support of our Jewish brother and sisters. In past years, I have seen acts of support from the Jewish community for the Muslim community and the Muslim community reaching out in support to the Jewish community as well.

Recently, we saw people of all faiths build a house for a family through Habitat for Humanity. We had more than 60 people in attendance every Thursday evening of October for Carmel Interfaith Alliance’s “Meet Your Neighbor” series, where we had speakers share their beliefs and misconceptions of their faith.

I am convinced that one of the best ways to decrease prejudice is helping people meet others of another culture or faith tradition. Once we get to know each other as human beings, we see how much more we have in common than what divides us.

Now hear this Commentary by Dick Wolfsie “You need to have your hearing tested,” my wife said. “I’ve told you that a hundred times.”

HUMOR “I only remembered 60, but maybe I didn’t hear the other 40 suggestions.”

I took a hearing test online. I was instructed to wear headphones and sit in a quiet room. All the rooms in my house are very quiet — even the laundry room when I am doing the wash. Hmmm, that is a little peculiar.

I was prompted to click on a green button if I heard a sound. I clicked every single time because I realized this was just a scam to sell me a hearing aid, which I clearly don’t need. Sure enough, they called me 10 minutes after I finished.

“Mr. Wolfsie, thank you for selecting the Republic Hearing Company.”

“Wait, isn’t the election over? And I’m not Republican.”

“Sir, we are calling about the hearing test you just took online.”

I agreed to see their hearing loss professional. They sent me a form to fill out.

SEE IF YOU MAY HAVE HEARING LOSS

Why were they yelling at me in bold capital letters? I wanted to determine if I’m hard of hearing, not hard of seeing. I tried to give honest answers to the survey questions.

Do others complain that you watch TV with the volume too high?

Every night, my wife comes into the bedroom while I’m watching “The Late Show” and says, “I can’t believe how loud this is.” I know she is saying that because I can read lips.

Can you hear people in another room?

No. That is the major reason I went into another room in the first place.

Do you sometimes hear ringing in your ears?

If dog barking follows, I know it means there is someone at the door.

My audiologist appointment is next week.

“Does he have a good reputation?” my wife asked.

“I have no idea,” I said. “I haven’t heard a thing.”

Dairy farm returns to roots

By Kelsey Musick news@currentzionsville.com Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville is returning its focus to central Indiana and discontinuing national MARKETING distribution of its dairy products.

Mark Vander Kooy, Traders Point Creamery CEO, said the business is looking to reconnect with its original mission. He considers the transition more of a “refocus” than a “rebrand.”

“We are often reminded that we are a local company,” Vander Kooy said. “The local people know our restaurant and they know our products.”

Until recently, Traders Point Creamery’s yogurt products were distributed nationwide at Whole Foods, Kroger and other stores. The distribution will scale back to a local level.

“We are in the dairy market, which is really competitive,” Vander Kooy said. “Because of this, we felt we needed to focus on the benefit that we have, and that’s being a Midwest company. Trying to scale artisan products is really difficult and we are mindful of that.”

“Bigger is not always better, especially in a competitive market,” Vander Kooy said.

“We don’t want to compromise our brand or what goes into our bottles, and to be a national provider, we would have to start compromising.”

For Vander Kooy, downsizing was a difficult decision.

“Everything in human nature is to grow, so shrinking and reversing that growth was the hardest thing I’ve had to do,” Vander Kooy said. “But it will be the best thing for our employees and for our customers.”

The 1,277 permits pulled in September of 2018 remain flat from the data pulled in September of 2017. “Amid recent economic challenges, builder confidence is continuing to escalate as the demand for new housing follows,” Indiana Builders Association President Pat Richard said. ‘Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ set for CCP

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com This normally would not be the type of play that longtime Carmel Community Players board member Lori PLAY Raffel would choose to direct.

“I usually pick edgier shows, but no one would submit a Christmas show,” said Raffel, a Carmel High School graduate who lives in Indianapolis. “I don’t have any family left. I don’t go anywhere (at Christmas). I thought, ‘I’ll just bite the bullet and I’ll do the Christmas show.’”

Raffel struggled finding a show she wanted to do until someone suggested she read the script.

“I thought it has a great lesson to it and it’s not preachy and it’s not cheesy,” Raffel said. “It’s really funny and I think kids and adults will like it.”

CCP’s production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will run Nov. 29 to Dec. 9 at Studio 37 in Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy, 10029 E. 126th St., Fishers.

“The stage is bigger and there is a curtain, and for this show, the curtain is very important,” Raffel said.

Raffel said she cast several members of Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy’s dance students.

“It was hard to find boys (to cast),” Raffel said. “So, the Herdman family is supposed to be girls and boys but now it’s just one boy and the rest are girls.”

The cast includes 12 children and five adults. The story revolves around a Christmas pageant at the church. There is a new director but the woman normally in charge breaks her leg.

“They talk this poor mother into doing it,” Raffel said. “The Herdmans, kind of a welfare family with the parents not around, come because they hear at church you get refreshments for free. They show up and end up getting all the big parts.”

Raffel said everyone tells the director it’s going to be a disaster and the Herdmans are bullies.

“In the end, it’s the best Christmas pageant ever because everyone learns they are pretty cool kids after all,” Raffel said.

“We met in 1980 playing husband and wife in a play called ‘My Daughter, Your Son,’ in Terre Haute,” Joe Meyers said. “We enjoyed it, so we made it permanent.”

Joe Meyers has been acting since 1956.

“I started in 1950 when I was a mere lass,” Lee Meyers said.

Westfield Middle School seventh-grader Maya Davis is performing for the first time with CCP. She has previously performed with Westfield Playhouse. Davis plays Imogene Herdman.

“I like that she is mean and sassy,” Davis said. “I like the change she goes through and she has some killer lines, as my mom puts it. She shows her soft side as the show goes on.”

Carmel residents Steven Marsh and his wife Nikki Vrtis, along with their son, Sam Vrtismarsh, are in the production.

Marsh plays Bob Bradley and Vrtismarsh plays his son, Charlie. Vrtis plays one of

the church women.

“I’m on stage a lot and don’t say anything. The times that I do talk I have some pretty funny lines,” said Vrtismarsh, a Carmel Middle School sixth-grader.

Vrtismarsh played one of the Herdman children in the same play in 2014 at Westfield Playhouse.

“He was one of the bratty Herdman kids.

Now, he’s playing the good kid,” Marsh said. “This is the second time we played father and son on stage. We played in “The Nerd” for Westfield Playhouse.”

Vrtis is making her acting debut, although she did play the Wicked Witch in a “Hansel and Gretel” play in kindergarten. “(Vrtis) started reading for people and I just kind of hooked her in,” Raffel said.

Vrtis looks forward to her small part.

“It’s not a huge role, so there are not too many lines to learn,” Vrtis said. “It’s just getting on stage at the right time. I’m hoping I can remember (the lines) once I have an audience.”

Time for ‘A Little Christmas Spirit’ DeYoung brings ‘Grand Illusion’

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Virtually all plays have a unique set of staging challenges, and Main Street Productions, Inc.’s presentation of THEATER “A Little Christmas Spirit” is no exception.

But director Kat Watson prefers to leave it at that.

“I can’t answer this one much or it will give away a bit of a surprise,” she said. “But the play takes place in both 1990 and 1950 at the same time. Now, figure that one out.”

Featuring a main cast predominantly of Hamilton County residents, “A Little Christmas Spirit” begins an eight-show run Nov. 30 at Westfield Playhouse, 1836 W. Ind. 32.

The final performance is Dec. 16.

Written by Pat Cook, “A Little Christmas Spirit” tells the story of J.D. Morris, who has been searching desperately for a special gift for his grandson. After wandering into Nick’s Emporium and finding what he’s been looking for, he receives a surprise when he returns to pay for the item: The store is vacant.

Former Styx lead singer Dennis DeYoung never understood the attraction of performing an entire CONCERT album, start to finish, in concert.

“My theory is on any album, no matter how great it is, there is always a song or two that you think, Does anybody really need to hear that one again?” DeYoung said. “The fans responded so positively, we said, ‘OK.’ My observation after having done this for a long time, the fans are pretty important. Without them, I’d be in my basement playing with my trained parrot.”

DeYoung, 71, will present the 40th anniversary tour of the “The Grand Illusion” album at 8 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Palladium in Carmel.

“It started as a lark on the 40th anniversary of the day it was released, July 7, 1977,” DeYoung said. “I decided to do that one show in Chicago and sold it out.

People reacted so positively to it that my manager and I decided to try it again in December and it sold out again.”

Other promoters eagerly sought the tour. DeYoung, who left Styx in 1999, wrote seven of Styx’s eight Top 10 Billboard singles.

“I play the album exactly the way you would listen to it, unless you were high,” DeYoung said jokingly. “Then we take a short break and go back and change our Pampers and then we play all the greatest hits that were not on the album.”

The album includes the title track, “Fooling Yourself” and “Come Sail Away.”

Main St., Carmel What to get: Jumbo sea scallops Price: $38 Anna’s take: Anthony’s Chophouse has a variety of terrific dishes, and I tried several, but the jumbo sea scallops were by far my favorite. The scallops are pan-seared, served on top of a creamy cotija polenta and topped with chorizo and black beans.

It’s a lighter dish that doesn’t feel as heavy as steak or pork chops (which also were delicious), but the scallops are meaty and tender.

Before my main course, I sampled the tuna tataki ($16), which is sushi-grade tuna with pickled asparagus and jalapenos on the side. A wasabi avocado crema adorned the plate and was a great way to add just

a touch of spice without being overbearing.

The tuna tataki is dusted with a wonton crumb and the tuna slices are thick and tender.

I also sampled the kale cherry salad — tossed kale, green apples, dried cherries and figs drizzled with a balsamic gastrique and lemon cherry vinaigrette. The salad combines sweet and tangy flavors.

If you aren’t a scallops fan, try the Berkshire Chop ($31) as an entree. It is a center-cut, bone-in and slow-braised pork chop, served on top of puffed barley, which is the restaurant’s play on risotto. Topping the pork is a tangy balsamic gastrique and a thick, sweet strawberry chutney which makes this dish taste like the holidays.

Anthony’s Chophouse serves its side dishes family style. A good option is the creamy mac ($12), a delicious combo of gemelli pasta, serrano peppers, tomato skin, gouda cream and white corn crisp on top. If you’re looking for a healthier option, try the broccolini ($11).

It’s served with shaved almonds, dried cherries and a white wine vinaigrette.

Suggested pairings: Anthony’s Chophouse has excellent, unique cocktail selections and I would suggest going with one of those. My personal favorites are the Chophouse Old Fashioned and the Dirty Dancer – a spicy play on a vodka martini with sriracha.

Behind bars: The Dirty Dancer Get it at Anthony’s Chophouse, Carmel Ingredients: 3 oz. Tito’s vodka, dry vermouth, .75 oz. dirty mix, 4 drops sriracha, 2 stuffed olives Directions: Rinse a martini glass with dry vermouth. Add vodka, dirty mix, sriracha and ice to a shaker tin and shake vigorously. Strain into chilled martini glass and garnish with two stuffed olives.

Fairground Saints unite online

“It was a random seCONCERT quence of social media events, I would call it,” Megan McAllister said.

McAllister said Mason Van Valin posted an ad on Facebook and Elijah Edwards was the only one to respond, so they begin playing and writing music together. They wanted to expand from there, so they put an ad on Craigslist.

“The girl I was living with sent a submission video and I happened to be in the background,” McAllister said. “They spotted me and heard me singing. They tracked me down through my dad’s chain of hot dog restaurants in the Midwest. I grew up in the Midwest but was living in California when we met. It was really serendipitous, the whole thing. We started writing music and have been doing it ever since.”

The Fairground Saints will open for country music singer/songwriter Sara Evans at 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Palladium in Carmel.

“I think she’s so passionate about songwriting that I think her fans can see that and feel that. We’re passionate about it, too, and it’s a great pairing for that reason.”

Earlier this month, the group released its rendition of “Silent Night.”

“We are looking forward to performing that while on the Christmas tour,” McAllister said. “It’s going to be all new songs from us, mixed in with a little bit of that Christmas music, too.”

McAllister said this is the group’s first holiday tour.

Religion in a national park Commentary by Don Knebel Zion National Park is the only place in the United States where government employees routinely lecture about God, angels, the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

TRAVEL Even the park’s name has religious connotations.

Through millions of years, water and wind created unique red and white sedimentary rock formations on the Colorado Plateau in southwestern Utah. In the 18th century, Mormon pioneers settled near the formations, which they thought reflected the majesty of God. As a result, they called the area the “Heavenly City of God” or “Little Zion.” They named one formation “Mount Moroni” after the angel they believe appeared to Joseph Smith, their founder, and named “Kolob Canyon” after the heavenly body LDS members associate with God. In 1916, a Methodist minister from Ogden, Utah, described a massive flattop formation as the “Great White Throne” of Revelation and the name stuck. A lower formation nearby then became known as “Angels Landing.”

from Mount Moroni “The Three Patriarchs” in honor of the biblical Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Continuing the theme, other formations became known as the “Pulpit,” “Organ Pipes” and the “Altar of Sacrifice.” In the spirit of ecumenism, the “Temple of Sinawava” was named for the wolf god of the Paiutes, Native Americans who once lived in the area.
