U.S. service academy nominations made — U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) recently announced his nominations for U.S. service academy appointments. One hundred and forty-four students applied for the nominations, and out of 64 interviewed, 42 from across Indiana received a nomination from Young. A nomination does not guarantee admission to a service academy, but is required in order to be considered. Criteria considered include evidence of character, leadership, academic excellence, physical aptitude and extracurricular activities. From Zionsville, Elijah Lang was nominated for the U.S. Naval Academy.

Silent auction to benefit birds — A silent auction at Wild Birds Unlimited, 9830 N. Michigan Rd., is available through Dec. 9. Proceeds benefit Liz Hatton, a bird rehabber in Westfield who nursed more than 700 birds back to health last year. The store has a fully decorated Christmas tree for the auction.

Paws for Holiday Fun — The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., will present Paws for Holiday Fun, an event geared toward ages 5 to 12, at 4 p.m. Dec. 4. Children can join TheraPets dogs for a reading of “Olive, the Other Reindeer” by Vivian Walsh.

BAGI announces building permit increase — The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis announced in the greater Indianapolis nine-county area, October single-family building permit numbers increased by 9 percent, reporting 615 permits over 563 in October 2018. This is the fourth consecutive month in which the market has experienced an increase in permits monthover-month from 2018.

Fairbanks joins Community — Fairbanks, which offers substance-use programs, will become part of Community Health Network by the end of 2019. The partnership will provide patients a more comprehensive approach to addiction and behavioral health services, including treatment for serious mental illness and a psychiatric intensive care unit. Patients will also have access to an expansive primary-care system and network of specialists which will improve coordination of care across all disciplines.

St. Alphonsus to “turn red” — St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, 1870 W. Oak St., will illuminate the church in red Nov. 27 to stand in solidarity with Christians around the world who have been persecuted for their beliefs. Red is the symbol of martyrdom. This is the second year the U.S. has acknowledged the Red Wednesday initiative.

Local author, illustrator to sign books — Black Dog Books, 115 S. Main S., will present local author, Heather Lefebvre, and illustrator, Laura Winslow, for a book signing event on The History of Christmas from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 30. Enlightening students on Veterans Day Commentary by Ward Degler A special event came to Monon Trail Elementary School in Westfield recently, a Veterans PLAIN TALK Day observance for members of the third and fourth grades. It also was an opportunity for veterans of several wars to sit with youngsters and field their questions about their service. It particularly was special for me because my great-grandson, Jacoby Walker, was among the fourth-graders.

The event started with a presentation explaining to the kids what Veterans Day is, how it came to be and what it means. It is always Nov. 11 because back in 1919, little more than a dusty day in history for all of us there on Friday, World War I officially ended. It became immediately significant that the armistice was signed by all of the warring parties at 11 a.m. on the 11th of November – the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Originally, the holiday was called Armistice Day because that’s what it celebrated. But when World War II came along, then Korea, and ultimately Vietnam, the name was changed to Veterans Day, honoring veterans of all wars.

After the introduction, the kids migrated to round tables where a veteran waited at each, ready to answer questions. There was a supply of cupcakes on each table, which encouraged speedy sitting and rapt attention.

“Did you ever shoot anyone?” was a popular question. None of us had, but some had come close. We explained that wars are fought by people who drive trucks and sit behind desks as well as those with guns.

“What is your most vivid memory of the war?” was another inquiry. I don’t know what the other men said. There was a retired fighter pilot, a medical service officer, an infantry soldier who spent two years in the jungles of Vietnam, and two active duty men who had served in Afghanistan. My most memorable time was leading Navy photographers through the streets of Washington, D.C., documenting President John F. Kennedy’s funeral. Rather than document the funeral, however, we took pictures of the crowd. Someone came by for our film every few minutes. We guessed they were looking for persons of interest. After all, the president had been assassinated, and nobody really knew yet how many might have been involved.

When the time was up, and we had finished our cupcakes and conversation, I was confident the Monon Trail third- and fourth-graders had a better understanding of what a veteran is and why recognizing his sacrifice is an important thing to remember on the 11th of November every year.

F.C. Tucker real estate stats — Zionsville home prices shifted in the buyer’s favor but left the market faster than this time last year. According to F.C. Tucker Company, the October 2019 average sale price for homes in Zionsville was $404,707, a decrease of 16.1 percent compared to October 2018.

The average price per square foot decreased slightly, by 1.9 percent, to $156.32 compared to $159.37 in October 2018. Homes left the market more quickly, spending an average of 45 days on the market, or 7 fewer days than this time last year.

ZCHS Eagles capture boys state soccer title

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com After losing to Chesterton 1-0 in overtime in the 2018 IHSAA state championship, ACHIEVEMENT the Zionsville Community High School boys soccer team was on a mission to return.

“The guys got a taste of it and they wanted to make sure they came back,” Eagles coach Rob Jordan said.

The No. 1 Eagles (21-0-0) became the first unbeaten and untied team to win since Carmel did it in 2006 by beating unranked Lake Central 3-1 in the Class 3A state championship game Nov. 2 at Fishers High School.

It was the Eagles’ second state title. They also won in 2009 and were runners-up in 2008.

“Ten years later we thought we could do the same thing,” senior Evan Miller said. “Immediately from the getgo, we were on the same page. Everybody was playing for the same thing.

It was cool to see that. Even at the training session, everyone was working hard. I don’t think we thought we were going to have that unbeaten, untied kind of momentum. Once we starting winning and having these shutouts, we went back to thinking, ‘Let’s do something incredible.’”

The state title was the first for Jordan, who has been Zionsville’s coach for nine seasons.

“There is definitely a motivating factor that you want to get back and try to correct what you didn’t do right the first time,” Jordan said. “It’s hard to get there once. To get there two

times is really hard. It was a bit of a motivating factor to try to get back.

More than anything, the kids like playing, they like playing together. It’s an opportunity to keep on going. It’s always about the journey.”

The Eagles won five consecutive postseason games by one goal before the final.

“If it was easy, you wouldn’t want it,” Jordan said.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half of the championship match, senior Chris Freeman scored to tie it with 18:44 left to play. Thirty-four seconds later, junior Alex Carr scored what proved to be the winning goal. Senior Ben Weidner added a goal with 2:40 left.

Freeman led the team with 13 goals and 10 assists on the season. Carr and Weidner each had 10 goals.

The Eagles lose nine seniors, including seven starters.

“We have a huge junior class that were contributing, but it’s going to be hard to replace our seniors,” Jordan said.

Pancake has memorable run of travel, events

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The fact Annabelle Pancake played in her first golf tournament at age 3 isn’t surprising when you GOLF know her family ties.

Her father, Tony Pancake, played golf at the University of Alabama and is Crooked Stick Golf Club’s head pro. Her mother, Libby Pancake, whose maiden name is Akers, golfed at Arizona State and is a member of the Indiana High School Golf Hall of Fame.

The past four months have been impressive for Annabelle Pancake.

She won the Indiana Women’s State Amateur title in June, a title her mother won in 1985 and her aunt, Kelli Akers, won in 1990.

The Zionsville Community High School senior made her LPGA Tour debut in the Indy Women in Tech Championship at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Speedway Sept. 26-27.

“It was definitely cool to be in that environment with the pros and people really good and have done that for so long,” said Pancake, who was scheduled to play in the American Junior Golf Association Rolex Tournament of Champions Nov. 25-28 at the the PGA National course at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. “I definitely learned a lot, and my dad and I had so much fun.

I’m really thankful that the sponsor was able to give me that opportunity.”

Her father was her caddy.

“The bigger events, I like to have him caddy because he knows my game so well,” Pancake said.

Pancake shot 76 in each round, failing to make the cut. However, she wouldn’t have played the final rounds, anyway, due to the high school regional. She did draw attention with her eagle on the 16th hole on the opening round.

“I didn’t even see it go in,” Pancake said. “Christina Kim is the one who reacted. My dad turned to me and the first thing he said was, ‘You’re going to be on TV.’ I was like, ‘You are probably right.’ That was very cool and

definitely a confidence booster for the last couple of holes. It was a great experience. It’s something I will never forget, for sure.”

Pancake, who has committed to Clemson, said she wants to see how she does in college before determining if she eventually wants to try to make it on the LPGA Tour.

“I know the coaches will prepare me to go on the tour if that’s what I want,” she said.

Pancake led Zionsville to a regional title and placed first individually with a 64 Sept. 28 at Smock Golf Course.

The Eagles finished fourth in the state tournament at Prairie View Golf Club the following weekend. Pancake tied for third individually, her best state finish. She tied for fourth in 2018 and 2017 and was seventh in 2016.

The Eagles won the state title in 2017 and were second in 2018 and fourth in 2016.

During fall break, Pancake went to Dallas to practice with partner Melana Barrientos for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Sectional Qualifier Oct. 22 in Kansas City.

“We shot even-par 70 and ended up getting first alternate,” Pancake said.

“We had a lot of fun, and considering how we weren’t used to that cold weather quite yet, it wasn’t too bad.”

Barrientos, a junior from Plano (Texas) West, also will play at Clemson. Pancake and Barrientos became friends through Junior Golf.

Christmas in the Village Parade to kick off month of Christmas-related events in downtown Zionsville

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com A Zionsville holiday tradition returns Nov. 30 to kick off a month of celebration. Christmas in the Village begins at 5 p.m. with a COVER STORY parade through the Village, and several other events will follow throughout December.

“We kick off the season with our parade and Christmas tree lighting on the 30th,” Zionsville Chamber of Commerce Event Manager Rachel Vining said. “We also have live entertainment, a s’mores station, barrel train rides after the parade and pictures with Santa.”

Trolley rides begin at 4 p.m., from Lions Park through downtown to Boone Village and back to Lions Park. The trolley allows parade attendees to park in those lots and arrive closer to the downtown destination.

Other organizations are participating in Christmas in the Village as well. The Zionsville Kiwanis Club will serve s’mores. The Kiwanians also will collect socks to assist the Zionsville West Middle School Aeries-Builders Club with its collection of socks for homeless people. The students have set a goal of 300 pairs of socks. Tube and crew socks are preferred, but all donations, including adult and childrens’ sizes, will be accepted. All socks must be new.

Sock collecting and s’mores will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at the parking lot at the corner of Pine and Main streets.

The parade and tree lighting, however, are only the start of the month-long celebration. The Zionsville Chamber of Commerce will conduct several more events after Nov. 30.

“Throughout the month, we’ve got three more events that will happen,” Vining said.

Dec. 12 is a ladies’ night out. Most businesses on Main Street participate with pop-up events from 6 to 9 p.m.

“They will have experiences for people. Sometimes, it’s drinks, makeovers, manicures, lots of different things,” Vining said.

Participation is free. Services and other items will be available for purchase.

conduct the Snowflake Seek and Find.

“Families come down to the brick street and Boone Village, and they’ll get a card that gives them clues about businesses that have a snowflake search. Once they find at least 10 snowflakes, they go to zWORKS and receive a complimentary cookie for decorating,” Vining said.

The chamber is still compiling a list of participating shops. Vining encourages residents to visit the chamber’s social media platforms for information and updates.

A Christmas Crawl will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 19, and it will provide the opportunity for 21-and-older residents to complete a “crawl” through the restaurants and bars in downtown Zionsville.

“They’ll have special holiday drinks, beverages to purchase,” Vining said. “There’s no cost for the crawl itself, but you do buy beverages as you go.”

In the past, the final location has always been Rush on Main, but this year there are three ending spots.

“At any of those ending locations, they have prizes you can enter for,” Vining said.

The ending locations are Bubs Burgers, Rush on Main and Greek’s Pizzeria.

Some non-restaurant businesses on Main Street also are participating. They will offer wines and drinks for shoppers.

“I know for sure there are businesses offering nonalcoholic options as well for people who just want to come and be festive and don’t want to partake,” Vining said.

NEW AND RETURNING OFFERINGS The main Christmas in the Village events are all returning, but a new attraction is Santa on the Move. Traditionally, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Santa has been available for photos at the Santa house near the tree in the Village at Main and Cedar streets. This year, on Dec. 14 and Dec. 21, Santa will be in a secret location from 11 a.m. to noon. Clues will be revealed closer to those dates. Santa’s last day is Dec. 22.

A horse-drawn wagon will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday in December, and complimentary rides will be offered.

Increase salaries for teachers

Commentary by Terry Anker To some of us, the world is a less colorful place. It doesn’t mean that we cannot see the same hues but that we think of them as the basic kindergarten Crayola pack with eight colors only. Sophisticated, we employ descriptive words like light green or dark blue. But otherwise, concepts of chartreuse and periwinkle elude us.

So far, the shorthanded descriptors have worked well enough. But today, it seems we are expected to wear certain colors on certain days to show certain encouragement of all manner and variety of cause, home team and political purpose.

Sure, we support the Colts – and also the Pacers, Indy Eleven and Indians. We support teachers. We support the farmers who work long, unrelenting hours, captive by uncontrollable weather to produce our food. We support the merchants who retrieve, organize, grade and deliver that food in the most safe, choice and cost-effective fashion on the planet. We support the entrepreneurs who take great personal risk to conceive, fund and implement important new innovations.

We support moms and dads, brothers and sisters, schools and universities, charities and nonprofits, our heritage and yours, bankers and businesses, hospitals and researchers, and all the rest.

Still, there aren’t enough colors to go around. If we don’t wear it right, on the right day, in the right way, are we not “right” at all? Must each claim a color and claim it quick?

With Thanksgiving upon us, however, I’m taking a new approach. Here’s why you should actually be thankful for me: • I make you feel better about yourself. I’ve been called a “sinner,” “drunk” and “child abuser.”

I’m apparently going to hell and I will supposedly be divorced by 2021 because of the way I treat my husband. I’m also rarely funny and consistently cross the stupidity line. How amazingly perfect you are in comparison!

• I help you burn calories. Because of the significant increases in both your blood pressure and heart rate while reading about my latest judgment-worthy shenanigans, you can skip your daily exercise routine and enjoy a workout from the comfort of your own Barcalounger. You’re

welcome!

• I’m your guilty pleasure. Like a horrible car accident, you just can’t help but stare at this space each week, even though you tell yourself you really shouldn’t read such “trash.” But it’s OK! You’re allowed to indulge yourself once in a while. Moderation in all things, right?

• I provide solid water-cooler fodder. Mom-shamers, zipper-merge etiquette, Trump’s teenage antics, IU drinkfests … what would you talk about with your gal pals at Wednesday Bible study or Thursday MOPS if it weren’t for me? The Indy suburbs need some spice occasionally. Consider me your weekly dose of cayenne pepper!

Editor, As a retired public school teacher from a neighboring state with grandchildren in Indiana public schools, it was good to see public school teachers stand up, not just for themselves, but also for their students.

After a decade of seeing Republican politicians neglect and disrespect and seeing teachers’ salaries fall behind inflation, it is long past time for bringing pay up to neighboring states. Even a poorer state like Kentucky pays teachers around $3,000 more than in the Hoosier state.

Teachers also deserve a better retirement system. Investment in education is the best investment for economic growth that a state can make, so we should be looking at using some of that $2 billion reserve fund to bring salaries up, build a better pension system and move to reduce class size.

For a long time, we have celebrated Thanksgiving with our friends, the Haversticks, at a nice HUMOR local restaurant. Bob likes to plan ahead, so we usually know around July 4 where we are going and what time we are eating. And where we should park.

About four years ago, other friends, the Goslings, invited us to stop by in the late afternoon on Thanksgiving and have dessert, or I should say, another dessert. We have looked forward to this every year and assumed they would ask us again. And now we come to what Mary Ellen and I call the Gosling dilemma. It’s getting close to Thanksgiving as I write this, and neither Dan nor Noelle had mentioned a thing about it. We see them at church and always have a nice chat. Nothing was said.

“We could just show up,” I said to my wife. “Except for my spilling red wine on their carpet three years in a row, why would they not invite us?”

“Maybe we shouldn’t go,” Mary Ellen said. “But they might expect us and then be insulted if we didn’t show up.

Of course, if we simply went to the door and rang the bell, they couldn’t really turn us away. Could they?”

This past Sunday, Dan was at church and I decided we needed to settle this.

“So, Dan, are you looking forward to seeing your family this holiday?”

“Yes, we are, but not as many are

coming as last year.”

“Oh, that’s too bad. I guess you guys will have a lot of pie left over.”

He smiled and nodded. I didn’t know what I should say next: A) I sure love pie; B) See you Thursday or C) Have a great Thanksgiving without us.

Finally, I just blurted it out, “Dan, are we going to see you on Thanksgiving?”

“Well, of course. We just assumed you were going to drop over.”

“Really? You never mentioned it.”

“You guys are always invited for pie.”

I pushed my luck.

“You mean forever?”

“Yes, Dick, in perpetuity.”

You seldom hear the word perpetuity and pie in the same conversation.

When I got home, I was eager to tell my wife.

“Listen to this, Mary Ellen. You and I have a place to go in perpetuity.”

“I know I do, but you’re not getting into heaven with two unpaid speeding tickets.”

“No, not heaven. Dan said we can have pie at their place on Thanksgiving for as long as we live.”

“That’s very nice of them. I’ll get a bottle of merlot to take.”

“What should I bring, dear?”

“Carpet cleaner.”

Free student-run clinic aims to expand

By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com Two men with Zionsville ties who helped start a free student-run medical clinic want HEALTH CARE to raise money to expand it’s operating hours this holiday season.

The Indiana University Student Outreach Clinic, at 3102 E 10th St. in Indianapolis, provides free health care to those in need on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. out of the Neighborhood Fellowship Sevilla-Martir Church. The clinic is seeking $500,000 in donations to outfit a building across the street from its main facility to expand hours and provide daily care to patients.

In 2000, Pastor Jim Strietelmeier founded Neighborhood Fellowship, operating it out of his house. He said a church should connect to its community, so he and other members began assisting the hungry and impoverished near the church. Zionsville Fellowship then provided food, but Neighborhood Fellowship continually received people at its door whose chronic ailments became acute medical emergencies.

“At that point, we, as a church, began to pray, ‘God, will you give us a clinic?’” Strietelmeier said.

In late 2008, a group of Indiana University medical students approached Javier Sevilla-Martir, a professor of family medicine at the IU School of Medicine, wanting to start an outreach clinic. Sevilla-Martir, who had

established a free clinic in his native Honduras, was tasked with finding a suitable location.

A Zionsville resident and Zionsville Fellowship attendee, Sevilla-Martir thought of Neighborhood Fellowship, a group that he said impacted the community through free Sunday dinners, a food pantry and clothing donations.

Sevilla-Martir reached out to Strietelmeier and asked if the fellowship would be interested in housing the clinic, which had moved to a different location Strietelmeier at that time. Strietelmeier said it would.

In a community of about 15,000 homes, an estimated 50 percent of residents near the clinic live at or below the poverty level and report unmet health care needs due to cost, lack of transportation, lack of a primary care provider or unemployment, according to the fellowship.

The clinic now partners with IU’s medical, dental, nursing, social work, law, physical therapy, health and human sciences schools, in addition to other schools from Butler University.

Sevilla-Martir said the clinic is served by more than 800 students from the IU School of Medicine.

“They always say it’s one of the best experiences in their medical education,” Sevilla-Martir said.

Wine bar opens in Zionsville, offers tasting flights

By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com A startup wine bar offering tastings of hundreds of wines from around the world has opened at 6625 WhitesNEW BIZ town Pkwy.

After celebrating its grand opening Nov. 6, Cork & Barrel will offer tasting flights, wine flights, and glasses and bottles of wine. In addition to its wine selection, Cork & Barrel will present educational talks coupled with tastings to help customers learn everything from grapes to grape-growing regions.

Co-owners Alex and Sarah Hine, with help from the Boone County Economic Development Corp, Microloan Program – which helps businesses find funding for equipment purchases and specific projects – said they are thrilled to accomplish their goal of opening a local wine bar.

“I’m not a beer drinker,” Sarah said.

“There are so many breweries or brewpubs that have popped up in the area, but when you go to a lot of these places, they don’t offer anything but beer.”

She said some pubs offer spirits or a small selection of wine, but customers don’t get the opportunity to experience “the best of wine.”

Sarah said Cork & Barrel will expand its current inventory of 120 wines to 300.

“Most people don’t get the chance to travel around the world,” Sarah said.

“Usually, you are stuck with the same wines from each restaurant. In the grocery stores, liquor stores, you see a lot of them have produced ones and those big brandname ones, and so we only carry boutique wines, so people really get the chance to explore and taste different styles (and) regions.”

Cork & Barrel also will offer a variety of local hors d’oeuvres, a small beer selection, wine and food pairings, wine-themed gifts and a small event space for paint nights, candle making and other events, which will be updated on the company’s website, corkandbarrel.wine.

“There’s a wine for everyone. It’s just about being open to those possibilities,” Sarah said.

DISPATCHES Single family building permits rise — The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) announced that in the Greater Indianapolis nine-county area, including Boone and Hamilton counties, October single-family building permit numbers increased by another 9 percent, reporting 615 permits over 563 in October of 2018. This is the fourth consecutive month in which the market has experienced an increase in permits month over month from 2018. Boone County topped the list, followed by Hamilton County.

These monthly increases put this year’s market activity nearly matching last year with only a 1 percent deficit, registering 6,059 permits thus far compared to 6,135 at this time in 2018. Permits issued in 2019 in the Greater Indianapolis nine-county region have created a total economic impact of $1,085,068,764 in local income, $246,328,572 in local taxes, and 18,371 local jobs so far in 2019. Indiana’s unemployment rate still falling — Two positive takeaways from Indiana’s recent employment report: The state’s unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in 18 months, and the number of unemployment insurance claims dropped to their lowest level this year. Indiana’s jobless rate dipped in August to a preliminary 3.3 percent from 3.4 percent in July, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The rate in Indiana hasn’t been that low since February 2018, when it stood at 3.3 percent for three consecutive months starting in December 2017. In addition, the number of Hoosiers filing for unemployment benefits in August dropped to 14,048, the lowest amount in a single month so far this year.The unemployment rate has decreased 7.3 percentage points since July 2009, the low point of employment, ranking 8th in the nation.

Band of Carmel, Zionsville students to play Monument Circle on Nov. 29

By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com A group of local students will perform during the “Holidays on the Circle” event series CONCERT on Monument Circle later this month Rosie and the Thorns is a band comprised of high school students Rosie Inman, a Zionsville Community High School senior who sings and plays guitar; drummer Joseph Alsatie, a University High School junior; guitarist Ben Buckman, a University High School senior; and bassist Ethan Johnson, a University High School senior.

More than 150 performers applied to participate. Rosie and the Thorns was one of only 12 selected.

Last month, the band auditioned for the annual tree lighting and “Circle of Lights” live show, set for Nov. 29. They were not selected for “Circle of Lights,” but were asked back to perform the next night from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 30 for Downtown Indy, Inc.’s continued holiday celebrations.

Alsatie, Buckman, Inman and Johnson began playing together during the summer.

“The band was created after one of my solo gigs at The Scoop on Main Street,” Inman said. “Ben reached out to me about having interest in singing in a band after hearing me play there. He and Ethan and Joseph had been looking for a singer so they could start a band and look for jobs and playing opportunities. We came up with a small list to try out playing together, and it went very well.

“We clicked and decided to keep going. We had no idea it would be taking us this far.”

“I grew up listening and playing along to all kinds of music, but I’ve always had a soft spot for jazz, and Christmas jazz is no exception,” Alsatie said. “I’m very excited to be performing with my band, and I believe it will be a good experience for us to perform to a larger audience.”

Inman said she has known Johnson and Buckman since attending middle school in Zionsville. They introduced her to Carmel resident Alsatie when they began attending University High School and played together in pep band and band classes.

“I’ve been playing guitar and singing since I was about 11,” Inman said.

“I’ve always enjoyed singing in choir and musicals, so getting a guitar for Christmas was the gateway into the world of playing on a stage (that was) not in a classical or theater sense. The guys also have been playing music for a long time, a lot longer than I have, and are extremely skilled in multiple instruments and are still trying to branch out.”

“This performance could put us on the map,” she said. “While we have played some professional, paying gigs prior, after this performance we can hopefully land a couple more offers from larger venues. It’s also important for us because it shows us what we’re capable of doing.

“While the guys are extremely talented, and I had no doubts in them whatsoever, it’s really been fun working with them to be prepared and just have a good time.”

Rosie and the Thorns play mostly covers, but Inman said band members are always writing new music and working on original songs.

To date, they’ve played at The Scoop, Eagle Fest, University High School’s Fall Fest, parties and other events, but Nov. 30 will be the band’s biggest performance yet.

Because they’re so new, a website is still in progress, but photos and video of local performances can be seen on The Thorns’ social media platforms, @thethornsband on Instagram and Facebook.

Professional exhibit developer Cathy Hamaker was one of several experts who assisted Songbook Foundation Archivist Lisa Lobdell in designing the “Of Thee I Sing: Politics on Stage” exhibit.

The Foundation’s Songbook Exhibit Gallery is at the Palladium in the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“When they told me it was going to be about politics, I was like, ‘Oh that’s challenging,” Hamaker said. “The more I thought about it, there are so many musicals that are so much a connection to the time and politics.”

Dunedin’s ‘Gingerbread House’ in New Zealand Commentary by Don Knebel Some people identify the railway station in Dunedin, New Zealand, as one of the world’s most beautiful buildings. For others, TRAVEL that is a matter of taste.

On May 25, 1861, Gabriel Reed, a peripatetic prospector from Australia, discovered gold along the Tuapeka River near Otago on New Zealand’s South Island. The area became known as Gabriel’s Gulley, and miners from around the world began coming to the Otago area seeking their fortunes. Dunedin, founded in 1848 by settlers who had broken away from the Church of Scotland, was the nearest town. By the middle of the 1860s, Dunedin had become the largest urban area in New Zealand and was by far the most prosperous. Residents used their gold wealth to try to recreate an image of Edinburgh, for which Dunedin was named. Railroads soon began linking Dunedin with the remainder of New Zealand.

By the 20th century, the growth of Dunedin had slowed and it was no longer New Zealand’s largest city. But the existing railroad station was still the busiest in the country and was no longer adequate. In 1904, the government began building a grand new station to complement the Romantic architecture that had become associated with Dunedin. Built in the Renaissance Revival style, the exterior of the station was constructed with

light and dark stones, with pink granite columns, giving it a gingerbread house-look. About 750,000 Minton tiles, imported from England, covered the floor of the booking hall. A frieze of Royal Doulton porcelain, also imported from England, surrounded the balcony. Terracotta shingles imported from France covered the roof. Despite the expensive materials, when the station opened in 1906, its cost was lower than anticipated.

Parenthetical thoughts on tots Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I need a Roomba. OK, maybe “need” is a strong word, but I need a Roomba. I just crunched the numbers, and getting a Roomba to robotically clean my floors would make my life approximately 4.5 percent better. Feel free to disagree with me on this as well: Parentheses make writing stronger. It’s OK if you don’t agree with my stance because — after all — we all have our faults. Let’s examine some rules on using parentheses accurately.

Parentheses block off information that either clarify your writing or are used as an aside. To use parentheses to clarify the contents of your sentence, you could write: Americans consume 70 million pounds of tater tots per year (or the equivalent of five Eiffel Towers). Here’s an example of how to use parentheses as an aside: Tater tots (or, as I like to call them, potato toddlers) are the best food in the world.

If your parenthetical clause ends your sentence, insert the period after your parentheses (not before).

In fact, I just illustrated the point. To take things to the next level (like dipping your tots in sriracha ketchup), let’s discuss punctuation inside your parentheses. If the contents of your parenthetical clause form a complete sentence, add punctuation!

The brand name Tater Tots is trademarked by Ore-Ida (they were “invented” in 1953 by Ore-Ida co-founders F. Nephi Grigg and Golden Grigg.).

That being said, you can certainly overuse parentheses in your writing. This would be like running your Roomba all day, every day; instead of enhancing your life, it would just get in the way. If my Roomba (Rosie) sucked up the tater tots I left on the floor (I promise I was going to eat them later.), I’d have to sternly (in binary language, of course) reprimand her. This over-utilization of parentheses gets in the way of an already interesting sentence. And — just like your relationship with your robot vacuum — never let parentheses (or tater tots) get in the way of a good thing.

DISPATCH Don’t rinse your turkey — There are many misconceptions surrounding your Thanksgiving turkey, but none is more dangerous than the turkey-washing myth. Raw poultry can contain dangerous microbes like salmonella, and it’s not uncommon for home cooks to rinse their meat under cool water in an effort to wash away these pathogens. The intention may be admirable, but this is a worse turkey sin than overcooking your bird or carving it before letting it rest.

According to AOL, rinsing a raw turkey with water is more likely to make you and your dinner guests sick than not cleaning it at all. The only thing rinsing does is spread potentially harmful microbes around. In addition to getting bacteria on your hands and clothes, rinsing can contaminate countertops, sink handles and the surrounding air. The three main ways to lower your chances of contracting salmonella when dealing with raw turkey are to thaw your bird in the fridge, minimize contact with it before it goes into the oven and give it plenty of time to cook once it’s in there.

It seems as though we just put to bed last year’s Gifts section, yet here we are finalizing the 2019 edition. Time speeds right along while we’re having fun, right? And fun should be one of the components of the holiday season, we believe.

We took a look at several possibilities for the theme of this year’s section, and “handmade” kept bubbling to the surface. The cover illustration by Zach Ross, our art director, captures exactly that idea.

Our managing editors, Ann Marie Shambaugh and Anna Skinner, sallied forth to find unique gift items made by hand, and there is some-

thing for everyone.

How do you welcome the holidays? We have a homemade Advent calendar with special reminders of the season or a family memory for each day leading to Christmas.

Real tree or artificial? When do you decorate it? How long before it’s “done for the season?” Real.

We usually wait until they go on sale, so it gets decorated late! It’s done after New Year’s.

Favorite local shop and why? Silver in the City. We love the eclectic and creative selection.

Do the presents go under the tree as soon as they’re wrapped or do they “appear” Christmas Eve? Does Santa leave special gifts unwrapped? As soon as they’re wrapped. We make a big deal of stockings, though. They are a Christmas morning surprise.

Best gift you have ever given (and to whom)? I surprised my then-girlfriend with an engagement ring at Christmas.

Best gift you’ve ever received (and from whom)? See answer above – She said ‘Yes’ to me 29 years ago.

Favorite Christmas tradition?

Singing “Silent Night” on Christmas Eve in church by candlelight.

Favorite Christmas memory?

We always drove from one set of grandparents to the other on Christmas Day. I loved seeing both families – and more presents to open!

Favorite Christmas song? “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”

Have you ever had a Christmas mishap? Tell us about it. One year, almost everyone came down with stomach flu – including family from out of town! I won’t go into details.

Christmas dinner: Formal or casual? What will be served? We dress up some for a family photo.

We will probably have baked ham, salad, potatoes, green beans and some kind of pie or cake.

All I want for Christmas is ... A less polarized and angry country. Or a chance to meet Weird Al Yankovic.

How do you welcome the holidays? We always kick off the holiday season the weekend after Thanksgiving with a trip to Piney Acres in Fortville. Then we go home, make some hot chocolate and decorate the house for the holidays while watching Christmas movies.

Favorite local shop and why? You can frequently find me at Gallery 116, grabbing coffee at The Well or shopping for my son at Roman & Leo. Do the presents go under the tree as soon as they’re wrapped or do they “appear” Christmas Eve? Does Santa leave special gifts unwrapped? We put the presents under the tree as soon as they’re wrapped. It’s always fun to guess what everything could be.

Best gift you have ever given (and to whom)? The Christmas after my grandma died, I gave my mom a jar of “Kind Notes” with little notes and inspiring messages for the difficult time. She could pull out a note whenever she needed a pickme-up, and it was the perfect present for that time in our lives.

Best gift you’ve ever received (and from whom)? The Christmas after my son was born, my husband gave me a sapphire ring to accompany my wedding band. After my husband was born, his mom received a sapphire ring from his dad, so it’s a bit of a family tradition.

Favorite Christmas tradition?

Making Christmas cookies, decorating the tree, watching Christmas movies.

Favorite Christmas memory? In 2012, central Indiana was hit with a big snow storm right around Christmas, and many roads and

businesses around Indianapolis closed for several days. Both my husband and I had our offices close as well. It was unexpected to have the extra time off work around the holidays, and we had so much fun those few days. We hiked around in the snow, tested out our new Christmas presents and just spent time relaxing with family and friends.

Favorite Christmas song? My favorites are “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Carol of the Bells” and “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”

Have you ever had a Christmas mishap? Tell us about it. Our cats love to climb up in the tree and sleep on the branches. One year, they knocked the entire tree over.

All of the water at the base spilled out, ornaments broke, it was a mess.

Christmas dinner: Formal or casual? What will be served? Our dinner sort of floats between the two. We host Christmas, so we have family come to our house in the afternoon. My husband (the cook in our family) makes a ham, tons of sides and we have a big meal for Christmas lunch.

All I want for Christmas is ... A relaxing, stress-free time with my family.

How do you welcome the holidays? Since I’m at the coffee shop more than I’m at my own home, I love adding some fun decor to the shop’s shelves. Listening to some of my favorite holiday playlists also is a favorite pastime.

Real tree or artificial? When do you decorate it? How long before it’s “done for the season”? Typically, it’s been artificial, although it would be nice to have a real tree some year. I have lots of ornaments that have been passed down, so it’s generally a combination of those with some of the glass reproduction vintage-y-looking round ornaments. I try to make sure everything is down the first couple weeks of January.

Favorite local shop and why?

Can’t choose. Too many great merchants.

Do the presents go under the tree as soon as they’re wrapped or do they “appear” Christmas Eve?

Does Santa leave special gifts unwrapped? Now, gifts typically go under the tree as they’re wrapped, although I do recall Santa leaving special gifts unwrapped when I was growing up.

Christmas Eve pajamas.

Favorite Christmas memory?

When I was a little girl, my grandpa would take us to downtown Indy to view the Christmas-tree lighting from what was then the Bank One building. It was something I looked forward to all year.

Favorite Christmas song?

“Greensleeves” Have you ever had a Christmas mishap? Tell us about it. Honestly, not that I can recall.

Generally, it’s casual and we attend Christmas dinner at a parent’s home.

My husband had taken a slide of the theater my mom managed, Michigan Theatre in South Haven, Mich., that a summer visitor had taken and sent to my mother. Have you ever had a Christmas mishap? Tell us about it. Maybe the time we were all dressed and eating away and our almost 3-year-old granddaughter starts gagging, with no doubt she was going to throw up all over the table.

So, I calmly put my hands out and caught it to everyone’s shock.

Christmas dinner: Formal or casual? What will be served? Dinners, no matter how many guests, are formal. I’ve always felt on Christmas Eve everyone can dress up. My husband makes a delicious standing rib roast with all the fixings.

NOBLESVILLE: Federal Hill Commons Ice Plaza is an outdoor ice-skating rink open through Jan. 6. The rink is open from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Starting

on Dec. 23, hours will be extended to 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily during Noblesville Schools’ winter break.

The rink will have special holiday hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 29 and Dec. 24, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 31 and will be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission rates are $12 for ages 13 and older and $10 for ages 12 and younger.

Guests may bring their own skates, but skate rental is included in the admission fee. Admission rates of $10 are available for groups of six or more and for patrons participating on themed nights. Themed nights include a Toy Drive Dec. 6 and Miller Night sponsored by Bailey and Wood Financial Group Dec. 20. Holidays may bring added stress with visiting friends and family, cold weather and other issues, but Summers Plumbing Heating & Cooling staff are providing tips to make sure plumbing problems don’t contribute to seasonal angst.

Some of the most common holiday problems plumbers encounter are clogged kitchen drains, often caused by a turkey bone. But other Thanksgiving meal ingredients can cause clogs, too, such as eggshells and pasta.

“People don’t realize how bad eggshells are,” General Manager Michelle Hepburn said. “And obviously, grease is not a good idea, either.

Pasta is a bad one, and we see a lot of that.”

Moreover, with relatives assisting with cleanup, Hepburn said some of Summers’ plumbers have noticed silverware or excess food shoved down the drain because others may not be as careful in someone else’s home.

Hepburn also reminds those playing host to holiday get-togethers that dishwasher drains can clog, too, and dishes should always be scraped off.

When it comes to other drains in the house, plumbers notice an increase in baby wipes (although they don’t know why) clogging toilets. Baby wipes should never be flushed.

Per cold weather, Hepburn reminds homeowners of common prevention methods such as ensuring the crawl space entry is covered and unhooking garden hoses, but a lesser-known cause of frozen pipes is leaving the garage door open too long.

“If there’s any plumbing in the garage, close the garage door,” Hepburn said, noting small water lines freeze quickly.
