Liquor store plan approved

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Whitestown Plan Commission approved a concept plan for a building at Whitestown Parkway and Maple development Grove Boulevard that will be anchored by Payless Liquors, a use that worried some Zionsville and Whitestown neighbors who live in the area.

Residents of the Stonegate and Maple Grove subdivisions previously expressed concerns about traffic, light pollution and a liquor store being located near schools and residential areas. The commission tabled the item at its October meeting in part to allow developer KLC Realty time to hold a community meeting to discuss the project. By the time the commission reconvened Nov. 14 to discuss the matter, only one resident spoke in opposition.

“I still believe it is not the appropriate location for this type of business,” said Adam Auvil, who suggested that only professional business services should be allowed east of CR S 700 E. “This is not the example of a building that we need in this area, which is a residential area.”

Liquor stores are a permitted use in areas zoned for general business, so commissioners could not vote against the project based on

use alone. The site is more than 200 feet away from schools and churches, which meets state requirements.

Whitestown Building and Planning Dept. staff recommended that the commission approve the plan but “take consideration of the neighboring residential property owners and the location of the liquor tenant within the Commercial Subdivision. Additional landscaping buffering, specific signage and lighting is to be considered at the development plan process to limit light pollution to nearby property owners.”

Speaking on behalf of KLC Realty, attorney Kent Frandsen said his client purchased the property because it was a permitted site for a liquor store. He said they are willing to “work hard” to create a nice looking building, within reason and fairness.

“There is a limit to what the owner can do.

He can’t make this the Taj Mahal,” Frandsen said. “He shouldn’t be subject to rules that other retail owners along Whitestown Parkway are not subject to.”

KLC Realty owns and operates 25 Payless Liquor stores in central Indiana. In Whitestown, proposed hours for the store are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The $2.5 million building is on nearly two acres and will have space for eight other commercial tenants.

Former gymnastics coach charged with child molesting

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A former gymnastics coach at InterActive Academy in Zionsville was arrested Nov. 17 and charged with two counts of arrest child molesting and one count of battery.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Kenneth “Andy” Arnold, 28, of Zionsville is accused of touching two InterActive Academy gymnasts who were 12 years old or younger under their leoArnold tards in their vaginal area as they practiced skills. A third gymnast told police he touched her on the buttocks on multiple occasions.

The gymnasts told investigators the alleged incidents took place between October 2013 and December 2015.

The affidavit also states that in mid-2015 Arnold had “been counseled regarding concerns over his touching of students.” Police interviewed a witness who alerted InterActive officials after “she observed a prior incident in which Arnold was touching the girls more than she felt necessary.”

In February, InterActive Academy sent a letter to parents stating that Arnold was no longer employed after a parent had contacted law enforcement about improper touching.

Arnold is being held without bond in the Boone County Jail.

Food pantry sees jump in clients

Girls tennis team gives back

The Zionsville Food Pantry is open to any Boone County resident in need of help, and its volunteers are reporting an increase in clients heading into the holiday assistance season.

Volunteer Nancy Thompson attributes the increase to several factors, including changes in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which resulted in 100 new families using the food pantry. She said as residents turn on their heaters when the weather cools, they pay higher utility bills and may have more of a need for assistance in other areas.

The food pantry has been a Gleaners Food Bank agency for 15 years. It is in the education wing of Zionsville Presbyterian Church. There are no requirements to receive food assistance. Clients are allowed to use its resources once per week.

“We urge families in need of food assistance to come register and shop during weekly service hours. We do have a proxy program that families can be served if they are unable to get to the pantry due to health, etc.,” Thompson said.

The DC-3 scores another victory Commentary by Ward Degler I just found out that the fabled Douglas DC-3 has added yet another chapter to its seemingly endless history. And this is an airplane that was considered plain talk obsolete at the beginning of World War II. The plane was built in 1935 as an improvement of the DC-2, the first successful passenger airliner. It was slightly bigger and equipped with sleeping accommodations for long-haul passengers.

When the war broke out at the end of 1941, commercial flight was pretty much shuttled to the backburner as America focused on building high-performance bombers and fighters.

Even so, the Army Air Corps took a look at the DC-3 and realized it could be stripped down and used to haul cargo. All kinds of cargo from paratroopers to weapons and vehicles got from point A to point B inside a DC-3. The joke was, if you could get it into the plane, the plane could deliver it.

Apparently, that included biscuits. It all started in New Guinea in 1942 when lightly armed American and Allied troops took on a strong and well-equipped Japanese army in the steaming jungles of that South Pacific nation.

Food, the stuff that armies run on, was being brought in to the country at Port Moresby.

Unfortunately, the only way to get it to the front lines was by native carriers. And that was painfully slow. And when it sat around waiting for transport, it often spoiled in the tropical sun.

That’s when the 317th Troop Carrier Group’s 57th Squadron started packing up supplies, including food, into canvas and burlap bags and dropping them at the front lines by parachute. The planes were quickly dubbed “Biscuit Bombers.”

The bombers worked so well that they later moved the effort to the Philippines, where moving supplies through heavy jungle terrain was likewise deemed impossible by any other means. Literally thousands of tons of food and supplies were dropped during the war.

Another page in this book took place in 1946 during the Berlin Airlift. The Soviets had cut off the city of Berlin from the west, and the airlift — using DC-3s — was launched to bring in food, equipment and even coal to heat and supply the city.

While landing at the airfield, plane crews noticed hundreds of children lined up at the fence. Seeing a chance to spread a little good cheer, the plane crews began dropping bags of chocolate by parachutes fashioned from handkerchiefs.

Amazingly, the venerable DC-3s are still flying more than eight decades after being pronounced obsolete. They’ve been spruced up with bigger engines and new electronics, of course. And they still haul freight, including people. They just don’t drop biscuits anymore.

Alex Pegram mixes a love of planes and photography (Submitted photo)

IEA employee combines hobbies

Alex Pegram loves planes and photography.

So naturally, the Carmel resident wanted to combine those passions.

“My mother had a pretty nice profile camera I would play around with,” Pegram said. “The summer before I started doing aviation photography I took a flying camp and got introduced to the basics of flying, different types of weather charting and maintenance issues, ways to fix airplanes.”

Soon Pegram, now a University High School senior, figured aviation photography was the perfect hobby. In the fall of 2014, he started taking photos of airplanes.

“I had a telephoto lens, and I would look up and you see the contrails of the airplanes,” Pegram said. “Then I graduated to going to little airports around (Hamilton County), and then going to Indianapolis (International Airport).”

It’s mostly a hobby, but Pegram has made some money taking photos for corporate pilots. Pegram shoots military, commercial, cargo and crop dusters. He shot photos at the Oshkosh (Wis.) air show in July.

“You’re always looking for the perfect shot.

You can get them landing, departing and in the air,” Pegram said. “I have two or three other buddies who like to do the same thing, and I meet up with them. It’s a neat community.”

Taking several photography classes at UHS has helped him improve tremendously, he said.

Pegram, 18, is working on his private pilot license.

“I’d like to be a corporate pilot, flying business jets,” said Pegram, who is considering attending Purdue to study aviation.

Pegram works at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville, mowing grass, helping direct planes in and helping passengers with bags.

“With the BMW Championship, we had 30 jets in 45 minutes (Sept. 5), which is pretty crazy,” said Pegram, referring to the PGA Tour event in Carmel.

Pegram posts the photos on Instagram @indy_spotter and has a following of more than 7,000.

“I’ve met so many people across the world doing what I do,” said Pegram, who met one plane photography enthusiast at London’s airport while on a trip to Ireland.

The owners wanted additional copies of my photos to give his family who were left grieving his death. I realized then how a brief and unexpected encounter could affect another person.”

Santa, mailbox coming soon

Families can bring their own camera and take as many photos as they want. Children will receive a free cookie from Mrs. Claus and a letter from Santa himself.

“We have a lower level here in the store.

We decorate it with a Christmas tree and a nice big chair for Santa,” said Teresa Bracken, head explorer at the shop. “We actually let each family have their own time down there with Santa. We rarely have a line, but if we do they can just shop around the store until we call them. It’s just a very private, intimate time with Santa.”

Boys and girls will be able to send Santa their wish lists and letters directly through the shop’s antique mailbox. This tradition has been a part of the holiday celebration for the last 10 years. Letters will be accepted Nov. 24 to Dec. 24 and should include a self-addressed stamped envelope so children can receive a reply from St. Nick.

Arc, Mr. Canary partner to provide jobs for people with disabilities

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Zionsville’s Stephanie Burdine has her first paying job at the Arc of Greater Boone County.

She spends her time cover story adding birdseed to Mr. Canary birdfeeders and packaging the product in Arc’s Mainstreet Enterprises, a warehouse and workshop for Arc’s clients.

Arc works with people in the community who have disabilities and helps remove barriers to employment. It does this in a variety of ways, but the warehouse — where clients earn money through business partnerships ­— has recently improved its program through the partnership with Mr. Canary.

“The Mr. Canary company reached out to me because of a relationship we had in the past with them,” Arc Executive Director Andrew Kirby said. “They asked if we would be interested in assisting with production and inventory control of the birdfeeder products. They are a very small company based out of Carmel with two employees, and they do all of the marketing and operational components. We take care of all the production, supply ordering, supply chain management and inventory.

It’s really a perfect match for what we do because we present ourselves as a production solution with our workshop.”

The single-use birdfeeders are designed to attract the American goldfinch. There are four products: the single Niger seed, the single mixed seed, sock feeders and a combination pack of the Niger and the mixed seed. The production process has 12 steps.

“That really makes it a perfect job for what we do. We are providing services to individuals with a variety of developmental disabili-

day, but depending on production, the clients sometimes only complete half of that and sometimes they complete double.

“The Mr. Canary relationship had a dual purpose for me initially, because (Arc) is an industry that’s very heavily dependent on state and federal funding, and because of that the state can come to us and say they’re cutting reimbursements or getting rid of programs,” Kirby said. “I believe very heavily in what we do, so revenue diversification is very important, and the birdfeeder contract is a very good way to make sure we are continuing to focusing on that.”

Burdine, who has been an Arc client for approximately four years, said she spends her paychecks on electronics and movies. She graduated from Zionsville Community High School in 2006 and worked briefly at Target afterward. Before working at Mainstreet Enterprises, Burdine participated in various

activities and volunteer work through Arc. “My goal is to live with my brother someday,” said Burdine, who lives with her parents.

She said that through working at Mainstreet Enterprises, she hopes to make that happen.

“It’s really changed their outlook on life,” Production Manager Jessica Alexander said of the birdfeeders and Arc’s clients. “Now they’re getting a bigger paycheck and always keeping busy with work, and they have something to be proud of. They feel like they’re making a difference, because they’re producing something they can see in stores and say, ‘I made that.’”

The birdfeeders are sold at Walmart, Kmart, Meijer, Ace Hardware and True Value. Kirby said the goal is to make 1,900 birdfeeders a

Aftermath: It gets worse With Donald Trump’s Electoral College victory over Hillary Clinton for president, a number of things have been shaken to the fore, and many of them belong filed under You Can’t Make This Stuff Up: • The “leadership” at some of our colleges endorses offering hot chocolate, cancelled exams and therapy dogs to help students traumatized by the election result. What we find traumatic is these students are future leaders of America.

• The president of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, is being asked to stop quoting Jefferson by some students and staff, because Jefferson – terribly unfortunately, in our opinion – owned slaves, as did others of his era.

• The “peaceful” protests in Portland, Ore., recently netted 112 rioters. Please note that 70 percent of the detained did not vote, according to a report.

• Calls to abolish the Electoral College continue. They do not take into account the votes of rural America, equally represented with big-city America in the E.C. outcome. With the popular vote as the lone determining factor, campaigns would heavy up in the major metro areas and call it a day. That’s exclusionary, in our view.

• The blatant hatred and racism from some of both parties’ voters is abominable. Win or lose, we believe it’s best for everyone to give the outcome a chance to succeed, and to work together for the betterment of our nation.

Life is for the living Commentary by Terry Anker Driving across the more rural of our environs during the rising of a spectacular harvest moon, one is reminded of the quiet grandeur all around. Big skies, still nights, teeming wildlife and intricately choreographed interconnections, dependent upon one and then another. Nature, by its very nature, is a spectacular. So why do we so regularly fail to notice the symphony taking place around us? What leads us to tune out the drama like a bad soundtrack in a shopping mall – only aware of it at its loudest and most disruptive points?

Is it that we humans have become less attentive than our not-that-distant ancestors? Is it that, since we have very little legitimate fear of attack by mountain lion or warring tribe, we have lost some primal instinct to observe the world around us?

Or, is it just that the chirping of crickets have been replaced by the chirping of cell phones? To be sure, the devices are de-

signed to drown out all other stimuli. Their chatter aligns to our own desire to feel wanted and responsive.

So why doesn’t nature stage a comeback?

It does, we’d guess, during a raging blizzard or torrential rainstorm. But can it ever hope to regain our attention in the quiet moments? Can the sunrise get us to put down the remote control? A deaf man whose hearing was restored by modern science was once asked his greatest surprise in joining our noisy world. He responded that he thought the sun would be louder. How can something so majestic be so quiet? He makes a good point.

Are we attending to the real beauty in our lives or, instead, are we simply being overwhelmed by the noise?

In this season of Thanksgiving, I’d like to recognize a most unlikely group, a marching band, for salvaging a humor steaming dump of a week.

I was on my way home after nearly 12 hours of high school debate competition (always a fun way to spend a Saturday!) when my younger daughter called to say she had not procured a ride to a Bar Mitzvah celebration, and could I please hurry up and take her. Normally, I would have pawned her off on my husband Doo, but he had been MIA for seven days, first on a business trip and then on a manly-man deer shooting expedition.

This single-parenting gig had already taken its toll. I’d been forced to deal with the election results and my oldest’s broken-nose surgery alone, on the same day, and hadn’t been sleeping much since.

My diminished coping skills had resulted in zero grocery runs, zero papers graded and hours of phone solitaire. I was serving cat food to the dog, Halloween candy to the kids and a heaping pile of pity to myself.

But I still had to be mom, and so I got my daughter to her party, took her brother for Steak-n-Shake, and then drove downtown for my other daughter’s band competition. I left as soon as she was finished and mercifully crawled into bed before 11.

But this was nationals, and though I was utterly exhausted, nerves and guilt kept me checking the live stream for updates.

I’d already missed the prelims and semis.

I felt I owed it to her to watch the results, albeit virtually.

As the bloggers began posting the finishes in exceptionally drawn-out fashion, adrenaline coursed through my body. Eventually, I had to sit up. Down to the final three, first one archrival and then another, were announced. Her band had won, on a tiebreaker point. I leapt out of bed, screaming and dancing. In that moment, I forgot about everything negative in my world and focused on the happiness of my child. And that made all the difference.

In a flash: Locked out Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I had just gotten home after giving a speech, pulled into the garage about 11 p.m. and entered the house through humor the door inside the garage. Mary Ellen was asleep upstairs. I undressed, but before putting on my sleeping shorts, I ran downstairs to grab a small bottle of fruit juice from the garage fridge. I retrieved the drink and turned the knob to re-enter the house. The knob refused to budge. I was locked out. Buck naked.

I banged on the door, bellowing Mary Ellen’s name, but the bedroom door was closed and the ceiling fan was whirring. On a scale from 1 to 10, I would need to make a disturbance that was a four. On the Richter scale.

My cell phone was in the car! If I called the home phone, that would surely get Mary Ellen’s attention. It rang and rang but no answer. It went to voicemail. Out of habit, I left a message: “Hello, Mary Ellen. If you get this, I’m in the garage with no clothes on. When you have a moment, could you come downstairs and let me in?”

I’m not a pessimist, but I knew she wasn’t going to check for messages at 11:15 p.m.

Then, I remembered that sometimes I leave

the back door of the house unlocked. All I had to do was sneak around and go through the entrance on the deck.

I needed to give some serious consideration to my wardrobe. What was appropriate for this occasion? I had two choices: A 40-gallon black garbage bag or the 34-gallon clear plastic bags. I look terrible in black, but the other option seemed, well, redundant. Instead, I just opened the garage door and made my way along the side of the house. Then, as I neared the back yard, I bolted toward the deck and into the living room.

The next morning, I didn’t tell Mary Ellen what happened, but she called from work later that day. “Dick, I just listened to the oddest message. Apparently, last night, there was a naked man in our garage. Who in heaven’s name could that have possibly been?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea, Mary Ellen.”

She’d never find out. I didn’t leave my name on that voicemail.

zWORKS partners with Speak Easy

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Members and partners of zWORKS gathered Nov. 17 to celebrate a successful second year in business, hand out awards and share two major ENTREPRENEURS announcements.

The Zionsville co-working space on Cedar Street will become the first outpost of the Speak Easy, an Indianapolis-based collaborative workspace for entrepreneurs. The partnership will allow members of each organization to use each other’s space and resources beginning Nov. 18.

“We’ve got two co-working and entrepreneurial spaces that are for the first time joining forces in a thoughtful and strategic way,” zWORKS co-founder Dan Moyers said, adding that this is the first partnership of its kind in Indiana.

Moyers also announced that zWORKS will soon start a search for its first executive director.

“This is a very big deal for any organization,” Moyers said. “Through our supportive members and partners we’ve been able to get there our second year. I feel confident this is the time to hire.”

Callaway’s music and lyrics have been performed and recorded by Liza Minnelli, Carole King, Michael Feinstein and Pattie LuPone, to name a few, but one of her favorite projects was writing the lyrics to “I’ve Dreamed of You” for Streisand, who sang the song to James Brolin on their wedding day.

“Barbara had fallen in love with the melody by Rolf Lovland, a great composer from Norway, so she asked me to write the lyrics,” Callaway said of the wedding song. “What I didn’t know was that she was getting married three days later. I wrote the song just in the nick of time. She got it three hours before she was getting married.’’

Callaway also wrote “A Christmas Lullaby” for Streisand’s “Christmas Memories” before recording her own Christmas album, last year’s “The Hope of Christmas” with holiday lyrics written by two-time Emmy Award winner William Schermerhorn.

Her holiday concert will include her own “God Bless My Family,” Ella Fitzgerald’s “Blues in the Night,” a song recorded

by Streisand, “At The Same Time,” and a couple classics mirroring Streisand’s interpretation.

Usually, football fans miss Black Friday events due to scheduling of games important to them. That’s OK, however, because there’s more to tailgate bargains than just on one day. They last at least a whole week.

“Forbes Entrepreneurs” reported in 2013 that Cyber Monday, the online counterpart to Black Friday, has been gaining unprecedented popularity — to the point where cyber sales are continuing throughout the week, earning the name Cyber Week. Here is our short guide for shopping for the tailgater: • Make a list of things you have found that you need.

• Exclude cutesy things like spatulas with school logos; odd shaped tables; games you don’t need; grills with built-in coolers; things the wind will blow away.

• Find the items you want online.

• Check the availability of your items with local stores with online shopping.

• Compare the online prices with those at your local stores.

In a large bowl, mix cereal and peanuts. In a saucepan, heat corn syrup and sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it first boils. Remove from heat; add peanut butter and stir until smooth. Pour over cereal mixture in bowl, stirring until evenly coated. Stir in candies and press firmly in pan; then allow one hour to cool. Cut into rows of your desired size and store loosely in covered container.

Show celebrates 25th year

“The community embraced it from the beginning, and we thought it was a great way to get kids involved in a concert that wasn’t just a concert but a little more elaborate,” said Conrad, who retired in 2014. “I’m proud of that being part of my legacy to be involved with that creative team.”

The Holiday Spectacular celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with performances at 7 p.m. Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 3 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 3-4 at the CHS auditorium.

Kathrine Kouns, director of choirs, said when she came to CHS, she was well aware of the Holiday Spectacular’s tradition.

“Over the years, it has become a tradition for people all across Indiana to enjoy as they kick off their holiday season. The show has grown in spectacle and always features hundreds of students, thousands of costumes, fantastic sets, amazing fun and inspirational music, and always a visit from Santa himself,” Kouns said. “It is a family friendly show for all ages, and the Carmel students have as much

fun putting it on as the audience has watching it.”

The 2016 theme is “Let There Be Peace On Earth,” featuring music from around the world.

“After showcasing all of our differences, we will end the show by coming together and realizing our common bonds.” Kouns said. “No matter what you celebrate, or where you live, this is a time of year to focus on universal commonalities such as the love of family, the desire for peace, the gift of generosity and the hope for miracles.”

Blueprint for Improvement: Meridian-Kessler kitchen remodel Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background Info: This 1920s Meridian-Kessler kitchen was in need of an upgrade. The small layout wasn’t giving the family the space they needed to gather. The homeowners knew they needed a more updated kitchen, and also wanted to keep the design integrity of their older home.

Before problems: The original kitchen was closed off to the living room and the rest of the house. This older home had a small kitchen and a breakfast room.

This is a typical design for these older homes in the Meridian-Kessler area. In this particular home, it resulted in a fragmented layout and unusable space.

The goal for this Meridian-Kessler kitchen was to create more storage and functional counter space, as well as creating seating for the family.

1. The original cabinets and countertops were replaced to make the room, light, bright and white. The homeowner wanted marble countertops like her grandmother used to have. This was a great choice to both update the space and respect the integrity of the original design.

2. By reworking a doorway into the kitchen, more usable wall space was available to contain appliances and create a new walk-in pantry. An original door was repurposed for the pantry to maintain consistent style through the home.

3. An archway into the old breakfast room was relocated to elongate the kitchen footprint. This space now houses a wine fridge and additional storage.

Budapest’s Great Synagogue Commentary by Don Knebel The Great Synagogue of Budapest is among the five largest synagogues in the world and is a symbol of religious tolerance. Sadly, it also remembers a period of extreme travel religious hatred.

By the middle of the 19th century, Jewish residents represented about 25 percent of the combined populations of Pest and Buda, Hungary, which later merged to form Budapest. In 1854, residents of Pest began building a monumental new synagogue along Dohány Street. Ludwig Förster, the building’s architect, was reportedly unable to identify a distinctively Jewish style, so he based the exterior design on Islamic buildings in Spain and Morocco, incorporating two onion domed towers resembling minarets.

He located a rose window reminiscent of the great Gothic cathedrals above the entrance.

The interior included three aisles and a nave resembling European basilicas and a 5,000pipe organ, unique among synagogues. When completed in 1859, the Great Synagogue had 1,492 seats for men on the main floor, 1,472 seats for women in the balconies and stand-

ing room for another 2,000.

The Great Synagogue was severely damaged during World War II by the Nazis, who used it as a stable. Under the Communists, the few Jews remaining in Budapest began using it again for worship. After Hungarian democracy was established in the 1990s, the synagogue was restored with government funds and private donations. Today, the Great Synagogue’s ark includes scrolls recovered from synagogues destroyed by the Nazis. The synagogue building is attached to the Jewish Museum, which includes a Holocaust Room remembering the events that led to the deaths of about 400,000 Hungarian Jews. A cemetery north of the building includes a mass grave of those killed in the Holocaust.

The interfaith design of the Great Synagogue has influenced synagogue designs around the world. The Central Synagogue in New York City, built in 1872, is almost identical.
