As an offensive lineman, Zionsville Community High School senior Gus Hartwig isn’t used to FOOTBALL being in the spotlight.

So, Hartwig admitted he was a bit uncomfortable at an Oct. 30 school ceremony celebrating his invitation to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Hartwig, who was presented his jersey, will play in the prestigious high school football game Jan. 4 in San Antonio. The game is televised by NBC. “I just want to do my job,” Hartwig said.

How well he does it drew national attention to the Purdue recruit.

“I didn’t think I was going to get it, then when I finally got the news, I was overcome with emotion. I was really excited,” Hartwig said. “It’s a special opportunity to represent Zionsville on a national stage and, hopefully, represent it well.”

Scott Turnquist, in his first season as the Eagles coach, has become a big fan.

“Being able to see what Gus is about not only as a football player but as a person has been a blessing for all of us,” Turnquist said. “Gus is here because he has talent, and Gus is here because he put in the time, effort and hard work to become a great football player. He cares a great deal about his teammates, and his teammates care about him.”

The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder said he has gotten stronger each year and improved his technique. Hartwig said

he succeeded by concentrating on doing the little things.

“You don’t have to do anything extraordinary, you have to do the ordinary extraordinarily well,” he said.

Hartwig has started all five offensive line positions during his high school career. However, he will likely play center at the All-American Bowl and was recruited by Purdue as a center.

“You are always in the middle. You are making the calls and who you are going to, what we’re doing,” he said. “Coach can trust me to make the calls, and I feel I can do that really well.”

Hartwig’s final two college choices were Purdue and Virginia. He committed to the Boilermakers in March.

Proximity to home was a factor.

“I like the academic and athletic balance at Purdue,” said Hartwig, whose father, Myles, was an offensive tackle at Ball State.

The collection showcases Riley’s work. A goal is to add photographs from Zionsville residents to the Historical Collection, which documents life in Zionsville, past and present.

Cynthia Young, Zionsville’s SullivanMunce Cultural Center executive director, said it was fun to sort submitted photos, new and old.

“Lloyd Riley photographs, and photographs submitted by residents, will be included in the exhibit,” Young said. “Our museum will also have a display of cameras from our collections.”

Students serve in Bolivia

Fellow Zionsville GIVING BACK Community High School junior Jillian Bond echoed the sentiment.

“I got to see a whole different part of the world I’ve never seen before and I got to meet people who were so welcoming,” Bond said.

Bond and Richason joined six other students Oct. 14-19 for a service-learning experience in Bolivia, led by Kelly Antcliff, director of youth leadership for the district, and Sarah Kiel, a first-grade teacher at Boone Meadow Elementary. As in 2018, the school partnered with Amizade, a nonprofit connecting students and faculty with service-learning opportunities around the world.

After selecting the student team in early spring, Antcliff said they met monthly to outline an itinerary that

The district does not fund the trip, so the students also planned fundraising activities.

In Bolivia, the group volunteered at schools in Quillacollo and Cochabamba, teaching English and working with students with special needs.

Giving thanks for family Commentary by Ward Degler When I was a kid, Thanksgiving had a special protocol. Mom always baked a turkey, which Dad PLAIN TALK stuffed with chestnut dressing. During the time we lived in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, we also had cranberry sauce made from fresh cranberries Dad had scooped from a wild and mostly frozen bog he had found in the woods.

When we sat down at the table and before we ate, each one of us had to say what we were thankful for. I usually started by announcing how happy I was we didn’t have school the next day. After that, I muttered something about having enough to eat, good clothes to wear and a warm bed to sleep in. We were just coming out of the Great Depression, and we knew folks that had none of these things.

I’m still thankful for all of these things, of course, but my deepest thanks now are that this coming Saturday, I will have been married to the most remarkable woman I have ever known for 39 years.

I came into our relationship with a lot of personal baggage. She welcomed me, anyway. I was confused about my faith and religion in general. She patiently led me on a path that restored my faith in God. And

ever since, she has been by my side through mostly happy days. And the days that weren’t happy, we shared our grief.

I’m also thankful that my wife’s children immediately accepted me.

I don’t think they’ve regretted it too often since then.

We actually put our marriage to the test immediately. The day after our short honeymoon, my daughter decided to visit. She took over the kitchen and baked bread. She said all newlyweds needed homemade bread. Obviously, she knew what she was doing in the bakery department.

But, regrettably, that didn’t include cleaning up the mess. There was flour everywhere and every pot and pan we owned was piled in the sink.

We recovered from that, of course, and went on to slog through 39 years.

All things considered, they’ve been extremely good years.

One more thing I am thankful for.

She has agreed to give it another 39 years. Maybe it will turn out OK, after all.

DISPATCHES F.C. Tucker real estate stats – Zionsville home prices shifted in the buyer’s favor but left the market faster than this time last year. According to F.C. Tucker Company, the October 2019 average sale price for homes in Zionsville was $404,707, a decrease of 16.1 percent compared to October 2018.

The average price per square foot decreased slightly, by 1.9 percent, to $156.32 compared to $159.37 in October 2018. Homes left the market more quickly, spending an average of 45 days on the market, or 7 fewer days than this time last year.

PREVENT A DRAIN CLOG

Clogged drains might be one of the most inconvenient nuisances of homeownership, but did you know that drains are designed to be clog free?

Most drains clog because we try to put something in them that doesn’t belong.

Here are a few tips on how to prevent your homes drains from clogging up: 1. Don’t put anything in your toilet except for toilet paper – and yes, that does include wipes, even if they say they are flushable.

2. Even though toilet paper is flushable, don’t use too much toilet paper, or it will not be able to pass through the pipes cleanly.

3. If you have an older toilet or drainage system, keep in mind it may take extra water to move items through the line – that might require extra flushes.

6. Do not put peels down the drain, even if you have a garbage disposal installed.

7. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in your drains if a clog does occur. The chemicals can eat your home’s pipes, possibly leading to bigger issues later; they are not good for the environment; and over exposure to these chemicals can have adverse effects on your health.

If you have an older home, it is possible that your drain and sewer lines are made of material that has degraded over time. If you have continued drain problems, it is important to contact a professional to have your drain system inspected. Collapsed lines, tree roots, or improper fall are all causes of drain issues that may require intervention for permanent drainage solutions.

4. Do not put grease down any drains in your home.

5. Make sure your garbage disposal is working properly. Just because the food goes down, doesn’t mean that the disposal did its job. Did you know that the average garbage disposal needs to have its blades changed every 2 years?

ZCHS runners place 2nd

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Community High School’s senior girls cross country runners have had a memACHIEVEMENT orable run.

For the second consecutive year, the Eagles finished second to Fort Wayne Carroll in the IHSAA state meet Nov. 2 at Terre Haute. Zionsville won the program’s first state championship in 2017 and was fourth in 2016.

“I’ve seen a program go from a place where we hadn’t even been on the podium before my freshman year to now by my senior year just trying to figure out how high we could go,” senior Katelyn Wasson said. “That was an exciting journey, building the program alongside building all these athletes that kind of coincided. I think it’s really cool to be part of the legacy. Every year we just do our best and leave it all out there at the state meet.”

Eagles coach Suzanne Rigg said the seniors have been keys to successes all four years.

“From the very first day of practice, they wanted to be their best,” she said “They tried to run with the upperclassmen. They just improved and improved over the four years, which is what you want.”

Wasson led the way at the state meet, finishing a career-best seventh.

She was 15th in 2016, 10th in 2017 and 15th in 2018.

“Katelyn has been an amazing athlete all four years,” Rigg said. “I’m so excited for her, for college and maybe even beyond that professionally.”

Wasson, who will compete for Purdue next year, was second in the 3,200-meter run at the state track and field meet earlier this year.

“The track season gave me a lot of confidence in my speed,” Wasson said. “I’ve always seen myself as an endurance athlete and I had that strength from running a lot of mileage. This track season showed me that I also have speed.”

Senior Anna Settle placed 11th, her best finish at state.

“Every year Anna has gotten stronger and stronger,” Rigg said. “This year, her confidence has just been through the roof. Anna has really taken off. At the start of the season, she had some good races and that gave her confidence. It kind of snowballed.”

Senior Margaret Allen finished 38th for the Eagles, followed by sophomore Lydia Moore, 62nd; sophomore Grace Gongwer, 95th; senior Lauren Rinehart, 105th; and senior Sarah Petersen, 117th.

Rigg said the seniors have been role models.

“I think these seniors have shown the way for the underclassmen,” Rigg said. “The underclassmen have seen what these girls have done and I’m excited for the future to see what they can do when they put in another year of good training.”

Commentary by Brad Thompson Each fall, Christ Lutheran Church in Zionsville organizes a Day of Service, during which congregation members are sent to work with area charities and serve the community. This year, one of those charities was Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding, a nonprofit group offering equine-assisted activities and therapy services to children and adults with physical, cognitive, behavioral and/or emotional disabilities.

When the Christ Lutheran Church members volunteered at Morning Dove, the task was to clean the horse stalls and provide fresh food and water to each.

The work wasn’t glamorous, and gloves were probably a good idea.

But the church members did it with good cheer and much sweat.

The Christ Lutheran volunteers had to get down and dirty cleaning the horse manure from the stalls. Three generations of the Tuffnell family all participated in the day of service. Granddaughter Jane wanted to volunteer at Morning Dove, but the rest of the family wanted to go to other charities.

A prayer for the lost Commentary by Donna Monday I’m just a loser. Honest. Not in the “No money, no friends, no future” sense, but in the PLAIN TALK “You’d lose your head if it wasn’t attached” sense. This has been going on all my life.

The first time I had to publicly acknowledge this failing was in the fifth grade. Our teacher was Miss Grier.

On the last day of school, Miss Grier brought out her lost-and-found box.

She took all the items from the box and lined them up on the chalk tray.

I bet there were 20 things on that chalk tray, and 18 were mine. Did Miss Grier ever offer to let me claim all of them in one final trip to the board?

Never! She was teaching me a lesson.

It didn’t work, and I’m still a loser.

At this point, I need to add that I am not a Catholic, have never been a Catholic and do not intend to become a Catholic. But I knew they had something the Methodists don’t – patron

saints. And I needed one.

Thanks to a Catholic friend, I knew that the patron saint of lost things is St. Anthony. My friend said when she was a child, she and her brothers would pray, “Tony, Tony, look around.

Something’s lost that must be found.”

So, I headed for the Catholic Gift Shop. For 99 cents, I purchased a St. Anthony medal for my keychain. It worked. Hadn’t had it three days before I lost my glasses. I got down on my knees and prayed to St. Anthony.

When I opened my eyes, there were my glasses, right in my line of sight.

Alas, the unthinkable happened. I lost St. Anthony. I thought about singing, “Tony, Tony,” but decided instead to head back to the Catholic Gift shop.

Local business owners encourage residents to shop during Small Business Saturday

Black Friday, with its steep discounts, is a wildly popular holiday season shopping day. But Zionsville Village businesses want shopCOVER STORY pers to take advantage Nov. 30 of Small Business Saturday deals as well.

Small Business Saturday is a nationwide goal founded by American Express in 2010. The inititiative is for consumers to support small businesses and communities the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Shoppers have spent an estimated $103 billion on Small Business Saturday since its launch.

Zionsville Chamber of Commerce Board President Dan Rhodes said small business accounts for a large portion of the local economy.

“Small business is described as 500 employees or less, and that’s just the primary of our entire economy, so supporting local business Rhodes is key,” Rhodes said.

Rhodes said the Village and Boone Village Shopping Center are hubs for small business, but he also said those aren’t Zionsville’s only small business areas.

“Our chamber has members out in the Whitestown area and also along Michigan Road. There are lots of options in the whole greater Zionsville area,” he said.

“Money spent locally helps the community thrive, and we think that’s very important. It’s absolutely critical for the overall community to shop locally.”

Besides benefiting the economy, Rhodes said shopping local provides a unique experience for consumers.

“One great value of small businesses is they offer one-of-a-kind, unique products, and it adds true character to a community,” Rhodes said. “That’s one of the important things that makes Zionsville a community of choice.”

Erica Carpenter, owner of Fivethirty Home, a small business on Main Street in Zionsville, encourages people to shop local year-round.

Saturday),” Carpenter said. “Now, we have a coffee shop right next door (Roasted in the Village), and in our block there are a lot of different, unique businesses. (On Small Business Saturday), you can shop all day, have lunch and get a drink. It’s critical to keeping the Village vibrant and keeping small business an important part of Zionsville.”

Other than kicking off its month-long Christmas in the Village celebration with a parade the afternoon of Nov. 30, the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce doesn’t have a specific event planned to promote Small Business Saturday. Next year, that might change.

“One thing we are doing, if you are out for Small Business Saturday, is we are going to have a parade that day and also the tree lighting on the brick street, and those festivities will start at 5 p.m.,” Rhodes said. “We’ve gone back and forth, and probably next year you will really see us promote Small Business Saturday.”

Carpenter said approximately 5,000 people attend the Christmas in the Village kick-off, which attracts more shoppers to the Village. For more, visit zionsvillechamber.org.

A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Zionsville Chamber of Commerce recently announced that its new executive director, Allyson Gutwein, will begin her position later this month.

Gutwein is a familiar face in Zionsville, specifically in the Village, where she was previously the manager of Midwest Jewelers on Main Street.

Gutwein serves as a ZionsGutwein ville Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and was a Boone County Chamber of Commerce board member for six years.

“The chamber has and will continue to play a unique and dynamic role in the advancement of a positive image for our town and advocacy for our membership,” she said. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to lead the chamber in engaging our membership, local government leaders and critical community partners to deliver our shared vision for a prosperous Zionsville.”

Candidate profiles fall short

“Your message is important to me … however … ” We all get them, these polite rebuffs. Our friend, business associate, or support desk operator is not available when we reach out. Understandable. Nature calls, travel happens and sometimes we just need a break. But the art of rejection is not as simple as some would believe it to be. And in the current torrent of communication mechanisms and chirping apps, we have greater reason to hide out than ever.

Studies report that humans are reaching an interchange apex. We send and receive scores of emails, texts, calls and posts each day.

Please pardon the reference, but it is now common to be listening to someone taking a phone call in the bathroom stall next door. Why? Is it really that imperative?

Could it be that we don’t know how to graciously take a breather?

Or, is it that those who demand our attention won’t tolerate even one?

So, we blithely post that “out-ofthe-office” form letter promising false love to whoever may reach out. Could we more honestly say, “You may be important to me. If so, I’m sad to miss you and will reach out promptly – but you may not be and you’ll soon know.”

It would be great to talk about it more, but it’s time for a break, and as the great Joe Walsh sings, “Just leave a message, maybe I’ll call.”

Running away from PF Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’ve finally accepted the fact that I have feet problems. There, I said it. My name is Danielle, and I HUMOR have planter fasciitis.

PF is an inflammation of the tissue that connects your toes to your heel and manifests in pain and soreness on the bottom of your foot. I’ve been a runner most of my life but have been relatively lucky in that I’ve avoided PF. Me being me, I usually attributed “other peoples,’” PF to “their own fault,” insinuating that I, of course, was better than them.

Not to their faces, mind you. I may be judgey, but I keep that shtick to myself.

Anyhoo, about a year ago I bought a weighted blanket and started training for Spartan obstacle course races, both of which put added strain on my feet. Yes, I am attributing part of my PF to my glorious 20-pound duvet that forces my feet into a pointed position for eight to 10 hours each

night. Combine that with lots of running and jumping on hard surfaces in less-than-supportive shoes and little to no stretching, and voila, PF! At least, that’s my “I’m-a-mom-so-I’mbasically-a-doctor” diagnosis.

But I haven’t done one thing to help my feet get better, even though I know exactly what to do. I still don’t stretch, I don’t wear a splint when I sleep, I don’t ice and I haven’t bought better shoes. I’ve basically been living in denial and limp-inducing pain for months.

A physical therapist called me out over the weekend, though, forcing me to admit that I have a problem. My name is Danielle, and I have PF. The road to recovery begins today!

Burst of energy Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I obsess about how my lawn compares to others on my block. I noticed some bare spots HUMOR this past summer, so I addressed the issue on a trip to a local nursery. Then at the Labor Day get-together, people were discussing Joe’s yard, which was suffering from the same problem. I thought, “There, but for the grace of sod, go I (that was a long way to travel for a joke, I know).”

Now, I have a new challenge to obsess over. It began with a letter from my electric company. The envelope looked like it contained my monthly utility bill, but the contents were far more ominous. The page was titled, “Last Three Months – Neighbor Comparison.”

I scanned the enclosed printout only to learn that I was consuming more energy than those identified by the electric company as, “Your Most Efficient Neighbors.” I felt so exposed that I closed the curtains and turned off the eleven lights, three TVs and two computers I had left on the night before.

The electric company claims I used 40 percent more electricity than my most efficient neighbor. Who was this person? Which house did he live in? It didn’t say. Was he hiding in the shadows? I’ll never know, because there are no shadows when there are never any lights on.

I asked my neighbor Ted if he received a similar letter. Ted is a nice

guy, but he always leaves his garage door open, which is an eyesore. I thought he was just forgetful, but apparently this is part of his grand plan to be recognized as a “conservation superstar.”

“Every kilowatt counts,” Ted told me while we were standing in his driveway. “If I never close that overhead door, I can save $1.49 a year.” He asked what I was doing to conserve resources at home. I was tired of the discussion, so I told him I only shower once a month. Ted walked back into the garage…and down came the door.

The idea that someone is monitoring what goes on in and around my home is creepy. Whenever I look outside, strange people are reading my meters, putting colored lines on my neighbors’ lawns, installing invisible fences and looking through tiny telescopes mounted on yellow tripods.

Despite this, I really am going to try to do my part in this conservation initiative. I’m going to charge my iPad in the car, disconnect my clock radio when I’m not home and make toast only when absolutely necessary. The competition is rigorous to be No. 1 in the neighborhood, but I’m not worried. I don’t plan on expending much energy.

Young actors take on key roles in ‘A Christmas Story’ at Beef & Boards

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com It’s hard to miss “A Christmas Story,” a 1983 movie which has been on a 24-hour marathon THEATER loop on TBS starting each Christmas Eve since 1997.

However, the musical, which made its Broadway debut in 2012, is not quite as well known.

“The movie is a holiday favorite, for sure. I haven’t seen the musical, but I’ve watched about every YouTube clip there is out there,” Ben Kistner said. “I especially like the Tony Awards performance.”

Kistner, a Zionsville West Middle School seventh-grader, plays the lead character of Ralphie in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Story,” Nov. 21 to Dec. 31. Ralphie is a 9-year-old who is trying to convince his parents to buy him a BB gun for Christmas, “It was the role I was definitely most hoping for, but would’ve just been happy to be in the show,” he said. “I like that he’s just a normal kid that I can relate to.”

Kistner said one challenge is he often has to express his feelings without words.

“The narrator describes a lot of what I’m doing rather than me saying what I’m doing,” he said.

Kistner performed as Michael Banks in “Mary Poppins” at Civic Theatre in 2018.

“Ralphie is just as big a part but has a lot more singing than speaking,” he said. “That’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to.”

said. “I love the scene where I put the big winter coat on. We do a pyramid and I sing with my arms out because I still have my coat on.”

Brokamp, 8, appeared in Christian Youth Theater’s “Lion King Jr.” and Jr. Civic Theatre’s “Shrek The Musical Jr.” in 2019.

Westfield Intermediate School sixth-grader Jack Clark plays Flick.

“I like that I get to have my tongue stuck to a flagpole while I sing,” Clark said. “There is a lot of dancing and choreography, so there is more memorization involved.

I’m in a lot of the dance numbers, which means I have to push myself harder.”

For Zionsville West seventh-grader Austin Lizama, his role of a bully isn’t typecasting. Lizama will play Scut Farkus.

“My friends and family think I’m nice, so they were surprised when they found out I’m playing a bully,” Lizama said. “However, other actors have told me it’s really fun to play a mean character. Plus, this will be my first professional musical I’ve been

in with Beef & Boards Dinner Theater, so having the ability to work with very talented children and adult actors is sure to be a fun ride.”

Lizama has never played an antagonistic role before. The same is true for Dylan Acquaviva, a fourth-grader at Union Elementary in Zionsville, who plays Farkus’ sidekick, Grover Dill.

“One of the fun things about acting is getting to play parts that are very different from my own personality,” Acquaviva said. “One challenge is getting into my role of being mean. It’s so different than my normal self that it’s hard not to laugh sometimes.”

Zionsville Middle School seventh-grader Claire Kauffman is returning for her third show at Beef & Boards.

Kauffman plays Esther Jane.

“I play a sassy girl on the playground,” Kauffman said. “It’s a fun role to play. There are a lot of fun dance numbers and songs that most all the kids perform in.”

‘A Christmas Carol’ gets a fresh look editorial@youarecurrent.com Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” adapted by Tom Haas, returns to the Indiana Repertory Theatre this holiday season. A brief history of Rome’s Circus Maximus Commentary by Don Knebel Rome’s Colosseum is famous as the place where gladiators often fought to their deaths. It was proceeded by the much larger Circus TRAVEL Maximus a few thousand feet to the southwest.

Perhaps as early as the sixth century B.C., Roman authorities created a track for chariot races in the flood-prone Murcia Valley between Rome’s Aventine and Palatine Hills. The oblong track was about 2,000 feet long and 400 feet wide. Twelve staggered starting gates at one end allowed the simultaneous release of 12 chariot teams onto the sand-covered track. As time went by, wild beast hunts, gladiator fights and public executions drew more and more spectators to the Circus Maximus, or Greatest Circus, some of whom watched from wooden seats along sections of the perimeter. Roman senators watched from stone seats along one turn. Early in the first century B.C., Emperor Pompey staged a wildly popular fight between captured gladiators and 20 elephants. In about 50 B.C., to accommodate the growing crowds, Julius Caesar added seats to accommodate an estimated 150,000 people. The seats were damaged by the great fire of Rome in 64 A.D., leading Emperor Trajan to rebuild the area sur-

rounding the track in stone in about 100 A.D. Competition from the Colosseum and the Stadium of Domitian, both built in the first century A.D., led to the abandonment of Circus Maximus, which held its last chariot race in 549 A.D. The entire site was eventually buried under accumulating sand and debris and partially excavated beginning in the 16th century. Today, the site of Circus Maximus, much of it still buried, is a public park, used for concerts and other public events and again drawing huge

crowds. During the Rolling Stones’ 2014 world tour, they played before more than 70,000 fans at the place where Romans once cheered as gladiators died.

Get in the next-to-last word Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt If a potato can become vodka, then you can become a bonafide word nerd. The tools GRAMMAR GUY and tips I give you are meant to be used for good; please don’t gloat your grammar greatness over anyone; rather, use it to lift everyone up. I’m about to share a word with you that will make everyone at the white tie-optional gala assume you’re the king or queen of some distant, exotic land.

I’m talking about the word “penultimate.” Although this sounds like a million-dollar word, it simply means “next-to-last” or “second-to-last.” It’s as simple as that. So, if you ate the “penultimate Oreo,” that would mean you ate the next-to-last Oreo in the package. If you are reading the 19th chapter in a 20-chapter book, you are reading the book’s penultimate chapter.

Allow me to put on my horn-rimmed grammar nerd glasses for a second.

The term “penult” is a noun that means the next-to-last syllable in a word. The penult in the word “automobile” is “mo.” Now you know that!

Certainly, I’m not going to up the ante and share an even nerdier-yet-related word, am I? Yes, I am: antepenultimate. Antepenultimate refers to the third to last item in a series, or the next-tonext-to-last thing. Going back to our 20-chapter book: If Chapter 19 is the penultimate chapter, that means Chapter 18 is the antepenultimate chapter. If we break down the Latin meanings for each part of the word, we’d get “before” (ante) “almost” (pen) and “last” (ultimate). Antepenultimate is the thing that comes before the almost last thing.
