Councilor Josh Garrett said he felt “very skeptical” of the proposal, as he expressed concern that the town could be backed into paying for the project if corporate partnerships don’t come together.

“I don’t want this to turn into a drag on Zionsville,” he said.

Rinebold said that he is planning a trip to the Little League Southeastern Region headquarters in Warner Robbins, Ga., which was the most recent Little League regional relocation. He said the success of that project should provide insight on how Zionsville could create a similar facility. He also said the committee has reached out to the Indiana Sports Corp., which helped secure the 2012 Super Bowl, for assistance.

The Town Council is expected to discuss whether it will provide $10,000 for the proposal at its Nov. 28 meeting, which begins at 7:30 a.m. at Zionsville Town Hall.

There are 11 road rehab and resurfacing projects ongoing in Zionsville.

Lance Lantz, sutransportation perintendent of the Zionsville Street and Stormwater Dept., said there will not be any road closures as a result of these projects, but there will be traffic control where the work is being done.

Homeowners will be contacted as needed when work occurs Lantz in their area. If the weather cooperates, it is anticipated these projects will be completed by the end of 2016.

The projects are Willow Road west of US 421, Starkey Avenue, Temple Avenue, CR 975 East, Bloor Lane, Ash Street (Elm Street to Maple Street), Village Court, Turkeyfoot Avenue, Stevens Road, CR 950 East and 1st Street (Oak Street to Ash Street).

“This work has been ongoing for several weeks, and it is difficult to determine a precise schedule as it is a very fluid process,” Lantz said. “Most areas experience construction activity for a day or possibly two, then go idle for

several days or weeks until the next operation mobilizes. We often don’t know until a day or

two ahead of time when an area will go under construction due to weather and other factors, or we would publish a schedule.”

Lantz said each area follows the same generic chronology: concrete crews come in to replace curbs, curb ramps and sidewalks; base repairs occur wherein failed areas of pavement are removed and reconstructed; milling operation moves in to remove the top 1”-1.5” of asphalt surface; paving operations resurfaces the road; pavement striping, markings and reflectors are installed and restoration crews come back to fix any turf grass areas disturbed during any of the aforementioned processes.

Lantz said with at least six operations occurring along 11 road segments of varying length, it is difficult to predict timings with any specificity because one day of delay for any reason creates a snowball effect.

“If I had any confidence in a schedule, I would publish one, but I have found that once the schedule gets off it only confuses people who heard that something was going to happen on a particular day,” Lantz said. “This is why we communicate the general areas and timelines, since it is typically only one to two days for each of the six basic phases.”

A study published by Rush University identified a diet that can significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, even with moderate adherence to the dietary pattern.

Scientific evidence continues to show that diet can actually reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A study

by Martha Clare Morris, ScD, a professor of Nutritional Epidemiology at Rush University has shown that the MIND diet can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by up to 53% and slow cognitive decline associated with healthy aging by as much as 6.5 years. The MIND diet, is similar to the Mediterranean and DASH diets which have been shown to support cardiovascular health but it incorporates more of the foods linked by previous research to improve cognitive function and delay decline.

Morris’ MIND trial followed 923 individuals between the ages of 58 and 98 over the course of 4.5 years. Their diet was assessed using guided questionnaires and cognitive function was measured yearly using 19 cognitive tests. Participants were scored based on how closely they followed several recommended diets (Mediterranean, DASH and MIND). The

MIND diet was the most effective overall, as strict adherence showed an impressive 53% reduction in risk of Alzheimer’s disease and moderate adherence showed significant reduction in risk at up to 35%.

Accidental shooting – Lebanon Police Dept. Sgt. Ted Boling is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the foot on Nov. 9 after completing a training exercise at the Boone County Jail. He was preparing to clean his department-issued handgun when it accidentally discharged and struck his right foot. He was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. The incident is being investigated by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

Turtle exhibit nears full funding

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com They say that slow and steady wins the race. In this case, a faster than expected but steady fundraising drive has nearly raised enough money ZION NATURE CENTER for a new Zion Nature Center turtle exhibit in a little more than a year.

“We have received great community support that came through multiple donations: our 2015 rummage sale, anonymous donations at the Nature Center, gifts in memorial, Tri Kappa of Zionsville, truly the list goes on and on,” Zion Nature Center Manager Mindy Murdock said.

Murdock said there was never a set deadline to raise the $9,500, but she is pleased to have raised just shy of $9,300 already. Donations are still being accepted.

“This being the first big project and exhibit that we’ve ever asked for donations on (is encouraging),” Murdock said. “We didn’t know what to expect with our first professionally designed product.”

The exhibit, a 5-foot diameter hollowedout tree stump, is in the design and planning stages with Minnesota-based Blue Rhino Studio. It will house eastern box turtles. Murdock

said the stump will be designed to be realistic, with insect tunnels, woodpecker holes, fungus and more. It will be the first piece of what Murdock said she hopes will become a realistic forest habitat within the Nature Center.

“Even though the (new) Nature Center (building) project will take longer than we had hoped, we are still looking for a spring completion date for the new exhibit and hope to hold an open house at the current Zion Nature Center to mark its arrival,” Murdock said.

Tree honors veterans’ service

Each year its employees military decorate a 12-foot Christmas tree with photos of those who have served or are serving in the military.

Guests bring in photos of loved ones to leave on the tree.

“It’s kind of a cool thing that happens during the holidays, because everybody feels busy in the hustle and bustle. We take time to honor the veterans with the tree,” said Leigh Ann Akard, third-generation family business partner at Akard True Value.

The tradition began with a photography store nearby in the shopping center.

“He had 8 by 10 photos of veterans. They did a tribute wall down at Lions Park during the fall festival,” said Joe Hollingsworth, an employee at Akard True Value. “We thought it would be a good idea to put them on a tree that we used to put in the corner here on the plaza, but we changed our minds because it wasn’t a great idea due to weather. We decided for that one year we would put them on a 12-foot tree in the store that we had that we

couldn’t sell anymore. It was really cool.”

Shoppers would come in and inquire if they could add their own family’s photos.

“The tree started getting pretty full. Then we noticed that photos were being moved around on the tree. People were coming in and admiring the tree, but also moving the pictures around so they could see their loved ones.” Hollingsworth said. “They’d say they love coming in to the store because it’s the one time of year they actually get to see their loved ones who were deceased or active duty.

It’s to the point now where the tree is pretty packed full.”

Boone REMC was one of 33 electric cooperatives in Indiana to participate in the third annual Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day Oct. 14. boys & Girls Club Nine Boone REMC employees spent the day at the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville West, painting several interior rooms of the facility and using a bucket truck to reattach gutter down spouts on the building’s exterior and change lightbulbs in the parking lot.

The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville helps area youth develop the skills, fitness and character they need to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Executive Director Tim Fretz said the West Club serves about 220 children ages 5 to 18 every day after school and about 35 children before school.

“We certainly appreciate Boone REMC coming and helping us out,” Fretz said. “Without the equipment they brought, it would be very difficult for us to get some of these projects accomplished. Also, we’ve been in the transition of trying to change some of the colors in the club, just to give it a facelift for the kids.

DST: Here we go again Commentary by Ward Degler So, now I’m getting up an hour earlier. Well, not really. I’m still getting up at the same time I always have. But the clocks have changed.

Daylight Savings Time plain talk strikes again.

The only good news is the kids no longer stand in the dark at the bus stop. The bad news is the cows still beg to be milked at the same time they always do.

Only now it’s 5 a.m. instead of 6 a.m.

DST has been doing a number on us twice a year for as long as I can remember. It first started in 1908 in Canada. America instituted it in 1918, and it became a real thing to all of us during World War II. It was supposed to save energy and help us get the most out of daylight.

I guess it did those things. I’ve sat outside at 10 o’clock on a July night in Minnesota and read the newspaper. That meant I didn’t have to go indoors and turn on a light. I’ve also traveled to and from work in total darkness in winter. During those months we never turned the lights off.

Back when Richard Nixon was president and we suddenly had an energy crisis, he

issued a couple of panicky executive orders supposedly intended to conserve coal, gasoline and presumably light bulbs. He ordered the nation’s thermostats to be locked at 65 degrees and the country’s speed limit reduced to 55 mph.

He also ordered DST enacted year-round. In January that year, dawn crept over the horizon just before lunchtime and vanished again shortly after the afternoon coffee break.

For the longest time Indiana never changed its clocks. Which made perfect sense because we’d already advanced them years before and never changed them back. Only Arizona has kept the faith and never changed time.

I don’t like the time change. Oh, I’ll still get up at the same time, no matter what the clock says. But I have a gee-whiz, slam-bang, bee’s knees digital watch that only a kindergartener can set. And my grandkids don’t come over that often.

A sophomore struggling academically thrives after being guided to a drafting course available at his school. Fifth education graders learn the connection between school and work through an annual BizTown event. And 21st Century Scholars attend an afterschool training seminar for the Scholar Success Program. These are examples of school counselors helping students thrive. Yet many students are at a critical disadvantage—there is not enough counseling time to reach every student who needs it.

The Center for Education Statistics ranked Indiana 42nd in the nation for having one counselor for every 541 students in 2013. The American School Counselor Association recommends a 250:1 student-to-counselor ratio. But Indiana Dept. of Education data shows that for every 619 students, Indiana has just one licensed counselor.

Ratios vary greatly from county to county.

In Boone County, IDOE data shows there’s one licensed counselor for every 520 students, with 23 licensed counselors between the county’s three public school corporations. Zionsville Community Schools has a 448:1 ratio.

ASCA identifies three areas where counselors support student success: academic performance, college and career preparation and social/emotional development. Many schools report success with their academic counseling efforts, such as course selection or study skills, but the highest need comes with college and career preparation and social/emotional issues.

A comprehensive counseling approach provides time for counselors to address all three critical areas with all of their students. A new effort from Lilly Endowment Inc. will address the academic, college and career and social/ emotional needs of students. Through grants to public school districts and charter schools, the Endowment’s five-year, $30 million initiative will help schools better meet students’ needs for comprehensive school counseling.

Hoosier Village expansion targets those just entering retirement

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com For years, Dave and Janice Welty drove past Hoosier Village on the way to visit their daughter and her family in Zionsville.

They often wondered what lay beyond its cover story entryway on W. 96th St., and, as it turns out, it’s their next home.

The Weltys expect to be among the first residents of The Oaks at Hoosier Village, a $45 million, 75-duplex expansion of the retirement community featuring homes designed primarily for those just entering their senior years. The units average 3,000 square feet and include open floor plans, two-car garages, optional walk-out basements and more.

“These are things folks would probably expect in their current homes,” said Nancy Jones, corporate marketing director

for BHI Senior Living, which owns and operates Hoosier Village.

“They really didn’t want to give up having families visit, entertaining and keeping the things they really love,” she said.

Dave Welty, who worked in real estate before retiring, said he was attracted to the large front porch, much like the one on his current home in the Dayton, Ohio, suburb of Oakwood.

“I like the exterior appearance,” he said. “I Jones really like the idea of an outside porch, kind of like the old-fashioned communities where everybody sat outside.”

Young seniors

Jones said that others in the senior living industry have recently reached out to Hoosier Village because of the community’s efforts to attract younger residents. The minimum age to live there is 62 years old, although spouses may be younger.

“There’s a lot of interest in what we’re doing, because

we’re attracting such a young crowd,” Jones said.

Carroll expects the trend to continue as the “silver tsunami” of Baby Boomers reaching retirement age continues to grow.

She said young retirees are interested in prime locations, lowor maintenance-free housing, great dining options and robust activities and more.

“There are some really interesting things going on right now in designing these properties and figuring out what people want, and it’s exciting,” she said.

The expansion

The Oaks will be constructed on nearly 70 acres on the north side of the Hoosier Village campus, which is at 5600 W. 96th St. Construction of the model will begin this month, with other units scheduled to be built in 2017.

In addition to the 150 units in duplexes, the expansion will include seven estate lots, a pocket park, garden area, pavilion and the community’s second dog park. The buildings will be near a forested area and within walking distance of a new nature trail through the woods and native prairie park.

Welty, who at 80 likely is to be older than some of his new neighbors, said that — among other things — he is looking forward to living in a community that makes it easy to go walking outdoors.

“You can get out, even in your later ages,” he said. “It’s just nice, kind of like a college campus, with all those beautiful trees. To me there isn’t much it’s lacking.”

From kids to seniors While Hoosier Village has found its niche providing homes for people in retirement, it didn’t start out that way.

In 1904, Edward and Sarah Crawford donated 185 acres to start an orphanage in Boone County. The Crawford Baptist Industrial School was run out of a building on the campus that now houses the IT department.

Decades later, its mission began to change as welfare organizations opted to place children with foster fami-

lies rather than in orphanages.

“In the ’50s there was less of a need for (an orphanage), but they began building the first part of what was then the Indiana Baptist Home in Zionsville,” Jones said.

Hoosier Village was founded on the site in 1956 as BHI Senior Living’s first full-service retirement community. BHI, which has roots in the Baptist denomination, still operates the campus, as well as Four Seasons in Columbus, The Towne House in Fort Wayne and Wesley Manor in Frankfort.

Now the real work begins The silent majority has prevailed, and presumably it will be silent no more. Where we all but predicted a presidential race victory for Democrat candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton more than once in this space, we sit not with egg, but soufflé, on our faces. Internally? Relief. She did not merit the opportunity to continue her ways from the Oval Office.

Donald Trump, the since behavior-modified Republican candidate, took care of that with a monumental victory at 2:53 a.m. on Nov. 9.

It was stunning to us. Now we have hope from a source we, at best, were questioning as far as his ability to deliver the vote if not control his mouth. But Trump delivered. The polls were wrong. The experts were wrong.

The establishment game is over and out.

Now he needs to follow up on his many campaign promises, chief among them repealing and replacing Obamacare, cutting corporate and personal taxes, growing jobs, shoring up defense and borders, and tolerating nothing that is not in America’s best interests. While the silent majority did its talking at the polls, the Clinton campaign was hobnobbing with Beyonce, Bon Jovi, Cher and other entertainment luminaries, practically looking down their noses at America. Trump went straight to the people with his message. So, we are hopeful, yes, but there is a ton of work to be done. He has the office, the Senate and the House of Representatives and, we believe, eventually he’ll have the Supreme Court to launch his vision. He says he wants to heal the divide. Let that not be merely political speak. Get after it, sir, starting with a smooth and respectful transition. It can be done.

Life is for the living Commentary by Terry Anker It is a beautiful day today in Indiana. The sun is shining and all is right with the world.

In fact, we have been the beneficiaries of an unusually mild autumn (so far). Shirtsleeves and open windows have carried us much further into the calendar than we’ve come to expect. So why are so many of us entirely preoccupied, not with squeezing the last from our summer, but instead with preparing for the coming winter?

As Aesop so rightly identified centuries ago, some of us are grasshoppers and others are ants. Certainly, it takes both to make the garden grow. But just as certainly, the perspective of the two insects, so alike in so many ways, is entirely different when it comes to preparing for the future. In the fable, it is the grasshopper that finds the error of his ways. He comes to know that starvation awaits those unwilling to prepare for their own care. He learns that unnecessary dependence is folly. Check. But, could

that smarmy little six-legged ant have likewise taken a lesson? Is there joy passing us by because we fail to see it? Is our predilection toward tomorrow keeping us from enjoying today?

Sure, on balance, we’d be foolhardy to overlook a solid plan for what might come. It even makes sense to prepare for a worsecase scenario. We spend so little to insure against catastrophic loss that our failure to do so is difficult to defend. Yet, is there room for a little late harvested happiness? Are we too old, too rushed or too worried about what’s next to grab a piece of the good times around us? Maybe the better question is, can we ever be too old, rushed or worried? Life may be for the prepared, but it is also for the living.

May I just complain about my children for one minute? And before anyone shoots off a nastygram, let me humor preface this by stating that I actually do love my kids.

There. Happy?

‘Cause I’m not. Why is it that every day I return home from a long day of work, I am met with a countertop filled with crusty dishes and fruit flies, backpacks and stinky socks strewn on the table and floor, and at least one “What’s for dinner?” greeting.

Several times a week I also hear, “When are you going to the grocery?” and, if I’m really lucky, “Libby pooped on the carpet.”

Now, I’m not the type of person who thinks, “Yay! My family needs me!” No, my usual reaction cannot be printed here. But honestly! How hard would it be for them to pick up after themselves? They’re all capable of loading a dishwasher and scraping up canine mess. Have I just spent 18 years raising lazy, inconsiderate brats?

Granted, two of my kids are rarely home.

Tiny Dancer typically has an hour in between school and rehearsals, and Guard Girl basically lives on the band field. Still, I can’t understand why my children neglect basic sanitation protocol. They all have assigned chores. They all know how crazy a messy house makes me. Why do they continually prioritize Instagram and Xbox over their about-to-lose-it mother? Why doesn’t anyone love me?

I suppose that’s my problem. I equate a Cloroxed toilet with love. To me, the greatest gift would be to walk in on a Wednesday afternoon and see three of my precious little angels scrubbing the floors Annie-style while the fourth self-initiates a Meijer run for milk and Fruit Loops. But alas, they are still just teenagers, more interested in checking text messages than hanging up their coats. And if my husband rarely manages to rinse his plate, am I really surprised that my 15-year-olds don’t?

Grumpy new man Commentary by Dick Wolfsie “Hey, there’s that grumpy old man,” said a lady at the grocery store. “‘You talkin’ to me?’”

I snapped back (Mafia-style), humor which ruined any denial I was planning to offer.

I went back over all my weekly columns since 2001 to see if I could find any evidence of her claim. I only found about 324 examples.

However, that’s over 15 years, so I think that puts me in the “easygoing kind of guy” category.

Here are some of the things I’ve complained about over the years: Cereal boxes: I can buy 50 zip-lock bags for a couple of bucks, but the skinflints at General Mills can’t find a lousy two cents to put Wheaties into a zippable plastic pouch inside their cardboard boxes. Many think the current packaging is fine. And that’s not even counting 100 billon tiny black ants.

Phone extensions: I call people in their office at a small company and their phone extension is like 78456. Seriously. How about 6? Six would be a good extension. And by the way, I live on a street with four houses, and my number is 8210. And while I’m in a grumpy mood about numbers, I don’t like having to

put in the area code to call my neighborhood across the street.

Here’s what I don’t want people to say to me when I’m out ...

“Would you like a bag for that?” Clerks ask me that all the time. That’s fine when you have several small items. But the other day I bought a small package of M&M’S. “Would you like a bag for that?” “NO, THEY ARE ALREADY IN A LITTLE BAG.” (I’m yelling again, aren’t I?).

“Have you dined with us before?” Why do waiters ask that question? How could that make a difference? No, we’ve never been here before. I see food items listed on this big piece of paper with prices next to each one. Now what do we do?

“Have any big plans this weekend?” Cashiers always ask me this on Thursdays and Fridays. I also don’t want them to ask if I had a nice weekend on a Monday or a Tuesday.

This is why I only shop on Wednesdays.

So, do you think I’m grumpy? Hey, who asked you, anyway?

Coming to Tradtraders point ers Point Creamery in the newly created position of CEO, Vander Kooy is able to partially get his wish working closely with local farms and overseeing the creamery that straddles the border between Zionsville and Indianapolis.

He began working with Traders Point Creamery in Vander Kooy 2012 as a consultant, assisting with the processing plant and pricing structure. His goals for Traders Point include expanding availability of the product line and visibility of the restaurant, but he wants to continue the vision that the owners had when they first created the farm.

“I think it’s a very special place as it is right now,” he said. “I just hope more people can experience it. I don’t want (people) to notice a lot of changes. I think the changes that we’re moving forward on are the unseen changes, the changes that help our products get into

more stores coast to coast.”

He said that with the increased demand for its products, the company works with local certified organic farmers to meet customer and quality needs.

“It’s really inspiring to be around some of these farmers,” he said. “Whether it’s our own farmer or the other farmers we partner with, that’s where the inspiration comes from that helps us move forward.”

Vander Kooy’s role encompasses the farm, restaurant and line of products sold across the nation.

Lewellyn announces expansion

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Lewellyn Technology has announced an expansion to invest $1.5 million into its 5,000-square-foot headquarters tech in Zionsville. The expansion will add up to 30 new jobs by 2021 and 3,000 square feet to be used for offices, with roughly a third of that new space to be used as a training center.

The company works with a variety of businesses and offices to put electrical safety measures and procedures in place. Clients include research facilities, universities, property management companies and military bases.

“Pretty much anything electrical safety we can do,” CFO Roger Black said.

The company also works with combustible dust, analyzing it to meet National Fire Protection Safety standards, with many of its employees formerly having worked for OSHA. “We’re electrical safety A to Z and combustible dust A to Z,” he said.

Black has heard the demand from clients to have classroom training where they can meet the electrical safety training required every three years.

“We’re looking to have more training areas where we can train our employees when we

hire them, as well as hold (electrical safety training) classes here,” Black said.

The company also plans to expand into “lock out, tag out” procedures, which prevent accidental restarting of equipment that has been turned off for repair or service.

Lewellyn Technology received hiring credits from the state and the town of Zionsville and expects to receive tax incentives from Boone County for equipment purchases.

Neighboring MOBI also recently announced an expansion, and Black said the proximity and access to I-465 makes the area appealing.

“We like this corner of the world,” he said.

“It’s a little gem here that no one necessarily knows about.”

No turkey trot this year due to lots of cooking and preparations for the yummiest holiday of the year? We’ve come up fitness with some fun yet challenging exercises you “can” do to rev up your metabolism before one of the highest calorie days of the year.

Go to your pantry and grab up two cans of food. This is all the equipment you will require.

You “can” do it arms!

Stand tall and hold a similar soup can in both hands. From this position, lift the cans to the side and keep your arms straight. Your goal is to lift your arms parallel to the floor. Slowly lower your arms and repeat 10 to 12 times.

You “can” do it legs!

Strengthen your legs by doing a lunge.

Holding a soup can in each hand will provide added resistance to this exercise. Begin by standing tall, then step one foot approximately three feet in front of the other, bending

both knees and lowering your body toward the floor. To finish, push off the floor with the front foot and return to the starting position.

You “can” do it chest!

Soup cans can also be used for a chest fly exercise. Lie on your back and hold a soup can in each hand with your arms extended toward the ceiling. Perform the movement by lowering your straight arms to the sides until you touch the floor in a straight line from your shoulders.

Finish off with a little cardio by placing one canned good on the floor and tapping the top of the can with each foot (alternating). Do 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, two times. After doing this workout, you will definitely feel less guilty about indulging in that second piece of pumpkin pie!

Zionsville Show Choir to sing into holidays

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com It’s three days of Zionsville Show Choir performances with more than 100 high school students singing in their annuschools al Holiday Concert Dec. 1 and 2, followed by the Carol of Homes annual home tour Dec. 3.

The ZCHS Holiday Concert at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center will feature performances by the Royalaires and Choralaires, which together form the Zionsville Show Choirs, Inc. “It brings the happy holiday vibes early on,” said Cassidy Sampson, co-president of the co-ed Royalaires. “It lets you enjoy the holiday season a little bit more.”

During the Carol of Homes, six Zionsville homeowners open their doors with students performing solos, duets or in small groups.

The performances change throughout the day with performers rotating to sing holiday music throughout the festively decorated homes, while other students serve as hosts.

“All members are involved in some capacity,” said Mollie Callahan, whose daughter is a show choir performer.

“I like to call it backwards caroling,” said

Sampson, a senior who has been involved with show choir for three years. She said some members play instruments as background music.

“It’s really cool to see that some kids have more talent than just singing,” Sampson said.

With the students having latitude to create their performances, “There’s a freedom aspect to it,” Sampson said.

Proceeds will help pay for show choir competition fees, costumes and sets.

Simultaneously, a group of young men will sing a cappella carols strolling down Main Street during Christmas in the Village.

Patty to perform Christmas concert

Sandi Patty plans to brighten concertgoers’ holiday spirits.

Patty, a contemporary Christian singer known as “The Voice” for her wide vocal concert range and flexibility, will perform a Christmas Blessing concert at 8 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Palladium in Carmel.

“This will be 99 percent Christmas concert,” Patty said. “There are so many amazing Christmas songs.”

Several members of Patty’s family will perform with her.

“It will be sweet to feature them on a couple of songs,” Patty said. “My husband (Don Peslis) is with me, and two of my kids will be singing, and my daughter-in-law. Another kid is a road manager and another is our business manager on the road, handling all of our designs. It’s really sweet to be able to travel with my family when for so many years I had to get on a plane

or bus without them. We’ll do some a cappella singing. We’re going to try to cover everything from ‘Jingle Bells’ to ‘O Holy Night.’”

Patty, a five-time Grammy winner who had lived in Anderson since she was an Anderson University student, returned to her birthplace

of Oklahoma City in 2009 when her husband got a new job.

Patty, 60, is more than halfway through her Forever Grateful Tour, which will be her final large-scale solo tour (90-plus cities) of her career. Patty performed her Forever Grateful set at her home church, Madison Park Church of God, in Anderson in April.

Now she is pleased about returning to the Palladium as part of her Christmas concert tour from Nov. 26 to Dec. 18.

“The Palladium is so beautiful,” Patty said.

“I’m excited to go there with my band show.

I’m real excited about being able to be at that amazing venue.”

Patty said she expects to see many family members and friends.

“It’s still home,” Patty said. “I’ve traveled so much all my life that I don’t consider just one place home. I really consider so many places, Indiana, Tennessee and Oklahoma City.”

Thanksgiving Day has been an annual holiday in the United States since 1863. Many people trace the origins of the modern Thanksgiving Day to the harvest celebration the Pilgrims held in Plymouth, Mass. in 1621. However, their first true Thanksgiving was in 1623, when they gave thanks for rain that ended a drought.

George Washington, the first president of the United States, proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day in 1789.

Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and friends to get together for a special meal. The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie and vegetables. It is rivalry week in football, when cross town or cross state rivals meet. It’s usually the last big tailgate of the year.

So let’s talk about the menu for the Thanksgiving tailgate. Why not serve all the good things from the Thursday dinner? Or, you could make a turkey soup for the people chilled by late November temperatures. This year we have a new bar recipe to go with any leftover items from Thursday’s feast.

Pumpkin bars Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, 4 eggs lightly beaten, 1 15 oz. can pumpkin, 1 cup vegetable oil Frosting: 6 oz. low fat cream cheese, 1/3 cup softened butter, 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla, 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar Preparation: On the day before, preheat

the oven to 350 degrees. Stir together in a large bowl flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, salt and cloves. Then stir in the eggs, pumpkin and oil. Mix until well combined and then pour mixture into an ungreased 15”x10” baking pan and spread evenly. Bake 25-30 minutes until a toothpick, inserted, comes out clean. Cool the pan on a wire rack.

To finish the presentation, make the frosting by combining the cream cheese, butter and vanilla and beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy. Then gradually add in 4 ½ to 5 cups powdered sugar and beat to make the mixture spreadable. Frost the cooled un-cut bars and then cut them into 36 pieces. Top the bars with candy pumpkins and cover with a lid or foil and refrigerate overnight.

On game day, take the bars to your tailgate in a cooler packed with ice.

Cook time: 3 hours, 45 minutes.

Ingredients: 1 package (12 ounces) fresh or frozen cranberries, 2/3 cup sugar, 1 seedless orange, peeled and sectioned, 2 McCormick Bay Leaves, 1 McCormick Cinnamon Stick Directions: Place all ingredients in 4-quart slow cooker. Cover. Cook 3 hours on high, stirring every hour. Uncover. Stir well. Cook, uncovered, 30 to 45 minutes longer on high or until slightly thickened.

Slow Cooker Oatmeal Apple Cobbler Prep time: 15 minutes.

Cook time: 3 hours.

Servings: 10.

Apple Filling: 5 medium Gala apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced, 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar, 1/4 cup all-purpose baking mix, such as Bisquick, 1 teaspoon McCormick Ground Cinnamon Oatmeal Cobbler Topping: 1 cup allpurpose baking mix, such as Bisquick, 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats, 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar, 1/3 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Ground Cinnamon, 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter, cut into pieces Directions: Spray inside of slow cooker with no stick cooking spray. For the Apple

Filling, toss apple slices, brown sugar, baking mix and cinnamon in large bowl. Place in slow cooker. For the cobbler topping, mix all ingredients, except butter, in medium bowl. Cut in butter with fork until crumbly. Sprinkle over apple filling. Cover.

Prep time: 10 minutes.

Cook time: 3 hours, 35 minutes.

Servings: 16.

Pumpkin Cake: 1 package (2-layer size) yellow cake mix, 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin, 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted, 1/4 cup milk, 2 eggs, 2 teaspoons McCormick Pumpkin Pie Spice, 1 cup chocolate chips Caramel Sauce: 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, 1 teaspoon McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract, 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Pumpkin Pie Spice Directions: Spray inside of 6-quart slow cooker with no stick cooking spray. For the cake, mix all ingredients in large bowl. Pour into greased slow cooker. Place towel over slow cooker and cover with lid. Cook 3 1/2 hours on low or until cake is almost set.

Meanwhile, for the caramel sauce, cook and stir all ingredients in small saucepan on medium-high heat 5 minutes or until sauce is smooth. Carefully remove slow cooker insert and place on wire rack. Pour 1/2 of the caramel sauce over the cake. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes to cool slightly. Serve cake with remaining sauce and ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

‘Christmas’ at B&B opens Nov. 25

By Zach Dunkin • news@currentinwestfield.com For Deb Wims, coming home for the holidays means stepping onto the stage at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. After all, shows it’s what she’s done for 18 years as the co-host of the theatre’s original holiday production, “A Beef & Boards Christmas.”

“The Christmas show is my heart and soul at Beef & Boards. It is home to me,” Wims said. “The holidays aren’t complete unless I’m onstage with all my dear friends at The Beef.”

When the show opens Nov. 25 for a run through Dec. 23, she again will share hosting duties with longtime friend and fellow performer, Kenny Shepard, of Fishers, who has been a part of the show since 1994. Wims joined the cast in 1996.

“I was hired as one of the dancers,” the Indianapolis actress recalled. “I was thrilled.

I hadn’t done a Christmas show in several years, and being crazy about Christmas, I couldn’t wait. It was right up my alley.”

Her attachment to the holiday classic makes this year’s production particularly bittersweet. She will be relocating out-of-state with her family next year, so these will be her last performances in the show.

“I will miss my friends, especially Kenny Shepard, the most. Sharing the stage with him year after year makes this show so special,” she said. “The combination of us together on the stage makes it magical.”

Shepard estimates that he and Wims have played in nearly 40 shows in which they have played everything from romantic partners to rag dolls.

“There are triple threats, and then there are triple threats that people look forward to seeing again and again. That’s Deb,” Shepard said.

“Plain and simple, she is the heart of Beef & Boards – especially the Christmas show.

Cook 45 minutes on high. Uncover and stir.

Philae: A temple, bed and comet Commentary by Don Knebel An important Egyptian temple complex survives because of an extraordinary journey. It is remembered by another extravel traordinary journey to a comet.

When Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 B.C., he was proclaimed pharaoh and considered himself a god. After Alexander’s death in Babylon in 323 B.C., his general continued the idea, becoming Pharaoh Ptolemy I. His son, Ptolemy II, built a temple to the Egyptian Goddess Isis on Philae Island in the Nile River near Aswan. The temple, mimicking much older temples, showed Ptolemy II among the Egyptian gods. Later Ptolemaic pharaohs added their own touches to the temple.

When Cleopatra, the last Ptolemaic pharaoh, died in 30 B.C., Romans took control of Egypt, and their emperors began acting like pharaohs.

In about 100 A.D., Emperor Trajan added to the Philae Temple an aesthetically pleasing 14-column pavilion that served as a river entrance to the temple and a place for storing the boat on which Isis traveled on the Nile. The walls of what is often called “Trajan’s Bed” were deco-

rated with images of Trajan offering incense to Isis and Egyptian gods.

The first Aswan dam partially submerged the Philae temple and Trajan’s Bed. With the building of the Aswan High Dam, the Philae structures were threatened with total submersion. Engineers working for nine years with UNESCO removed the temple complex from Philae, block by block, and reassembled the buildings on higher Agilkia Island, modified to resemble Philae Island. Today, the temple to Isis and Trajan’s Bed are among the most intact of all ancient Egyptian temples. In 2004, the European Space Agency launched the Rosetta spacecraft toward comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. The lander was named Philae in honor of the temple. The name of the 2014 landing spot, determined by public vote, was Agilkia, the destination of the Philae Temple and Trajan’s Bed. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP.
