Jury duty scam — A scam involving the threat of arrest for missing jury duty has hit central Indiana. A victim answers the telephone and the caller says a warrant is being issued for not appearing for jury duty (or paying taxes or another offense). The caller may give the name of a courthouse employee, a deputy or a name similar to an employee. The victim is then told to pay money to avoid arrest. These calls are fake. Contact your local police if you receive one.

Park planning meetings — Help the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Dept. plan for the next five years through three public input meetings. All meetings are scheduled in the new Zionsville Town Hall Community Room, Room 207, 1100 W. Oak St., Zionsville. Meetings will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 16, Dec. 14, and March 21.

Officers sworn in, mayor declines raise Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council met Nov. 6 to welcome two new police officers, discuss 2018 salaries and more.

What happened: Mayor Tim Haak swore in two new police officers.

What it means: Daniel Brown and Thomas Lucas are both Ball State University graduates who are several weeks into a 15-week Zionsville Police Dept. training program. They were hired as a result of the implementation of the public safety local income tax, which went into effect Jan. 1.

What happened: The council approved using $100,000 from the general fund to cover unexpected costs for the new Town Hall parking lot and future drive adjacent to Brendan Way. What it means: The town originally planned to add a topcoat and pave the existing parking lot, which also serves the new Town Hall building.

However, poor soil conditions under the existing lot complicated the project, and the town expects to find the same soil conditions where the new drive is planned. The appropriation also includes the addition of sidewalks between the parking lot and Oak Street and some storm inlet changes.

What happened: The council introduced the 2018 salary ordinance for town officials and employees.

What it means: The ordinance increases employee pay 2.5 to 3 percent based on performance. The town will continue to pay 90 percent of insurance premium costs for employees and 85 percent for spouses and dependents. The mayor, who makes $120,000 per year, indicated that for the second year in a row he would not accept a proposed pay increase, although Town Council President Josh Garrett said he believes the mayor deserves one.

What’s next: The council is expected to vote on the ordinance at a future meeting. The next one is set for 7:30 a.m. Nov. 20.

What happened: The council approved a resolution authorizing the refunding of bonds.

What it means: Refunding the bonds works like a refinance to take advantage of lower interest rates. The resolution also removes a provision to use property taxes as a backup plan to repay the original 2008 bond. The provision was included to get a lower interest rate but was never used.

What’s next: By approving the resolution, the town is expected to save approximately $45,000 a year and $448,189 over the life of the bond.

Councilor pleads guilty to OWI

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Town Councilor Elizabeth Hopper pleaded guilty Oct. 26 to operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor. courts As part of the deal, three other charges — operating a vehicle with an ACE of .15 or more, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and public intoxication.

The agreement states that Hopper will serve a suspended sentence of 365 days with four days already served and that she will be on supervised probation for the balance of the suspended sentence. It states she is not allowed Hopper to possess or consume alcohol during the probation and that her driver’s license is suspended for 210 days with specialized driving privileges for the following 180 days.

When reached by phone, Hopper declined to comment.

Hopper was arrested Sept. 25 after a Zionsville Police Dept. officer noticed her vehicle drive over a sidewalk and curb, according to a police report. She registered a .221 blood alcohol concentration, the report states, which is nearly three times the legal limit.

Hopper stepped down from her role as town council president Oct. 23 but will remain on the council. She also resigned from the Zionsville Safety Board and Board of Police Commissioners.

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Fire Dept. battled a barn fire Nov. 8 that resulted in the death of some chickens but no injuries to the homeowners or public safety firefighters.

The owner of the barn at 748 S CR 800 E reported the fire at 7 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure. They brought the fire under control within 30 minutes. It did not spread to the home or other buildings.

Firefighters estimate fire caused as much as $40,000 in damage. In addition to chickens, general equipment kept inside the barn was destroyed. The cause is still under investigation.

Several area fire departments provided tanker trucks with water because fire hydrants were not available in the area.

Zionsville Community High School senior Molly Grotjan was awarded achievement first place in the junior category of the Indiana state Make It With Wool contest during the Indiana State Fair. She created a three-piece outfit that will be entered into the state competition in San Antonio in February .

“I sew for 4-H, and from that I had heard about the contest through word of mouth,” Grotjan said. “I was able to use my 4-H outfit that I had sewn in the Make It With Wool Contest.”

Her three-piece outfit took more than 60 hours to sew and included a navy skirt, navy and cream color block top and a gray and blue tweed cape.

“Sewing is something I love to do,” Grotjan said. “I love being able to compete with others my own age. It continuously makes

Her 10 years’ experience participating in sewing events helped Grotjan perfect her craft.

“My sewing instructor judges for other sewing competitions, and what I do is not something he sees very often, hand-sewing.

I did a lot of hand-sewing on my hems, buttonholes, all the binding around my cape,” Grotjan said.

She made it to the national competition last year, too.

“The goal is always to place in the top 10. I placed in the lower 5 out of the top 10 last year. The goal is to place in the top 5 this time,” Grotjan said.

She is glad that the contest promotes the American Wool Council and American Sheep Industry.

“To me there are so many benefits to just competing that winning is just the icing on top of the cake,” Grotjan said.

Fourth-generation carpenter inspired by the past

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com In a world of mass-produced, particleboard products, Boone County resident Tabb Adams is handcrafting county items that are built to last generations.

Adams’ work harkens to the sturdiness and timeliness of a grandmother’s large oak dinner table or the wooden rocking chair that has put generations of babies asleep and lives on for the family’s next bundle of joy.

Adams, 47, is a fourth-generation carpenter who has continued the family tradition by restoring some of Indiana’s most historic buildings and launching his own carpentry business in Sheridan that serves Hamilton County and surrounding areas.

“It’s kind of cool that I can still go places and see things that my ancestors have had their hands on and built,” Adams said.

Adams has had a hand in maintaining the 100-year-old Murat Theatre in downtown Indianapolis when he served as building engineer. He’s also worked on the Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center and the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where he served as

director of facilities.

In 2015, Adams launched his own carpentry, refinishing and repair business, Cross Cut Vintage Designs. Adams creates barn door consoles, farmhouse tables and specializes in mid-century modern and rustic farmhouse designs. He utilizes wood from torn-down barns made of oak or poplar but also works with more high-end woods like ebony and mahogany to create custom pieces for customers.

Adams also handcrafts pieces for modern times, like a stand-up desk for a teach-

er at Allisonville Elementary School.

“If somebody dreams it up, I can build it,” Adams said.

Adams said he gets a lot of inspiration from his workshop, a 100-year-old barn that he and other farmers and carpenters have renovated over the past century.

“I have a lot of satisfaction in creating something that is special for somebody in hopes that it will be a family heirloom and be passed down for generations,” Adams said.

I had to pick up an item at the store the other day, and as I wound my way past a bin of Halloween candy plain talk now listed as a clearance item, I passed an aisle lined with candy canes, Christmas ornaments and other Yuletide offerings.

Mind you, the Halloween candy still was fresh from the trick-or-treat display only a couple of days before. Not only that, but Thanksgiving still was three weeks away and I hadn’t even thought about buying a turkey yet.

I once joked that the effort to get a jump on the seasons would ultimately find us touting Easter goodies in November and Fourth of July fireworks in January. Now, I’m not so sure it’s a joke.

It goes without saying that making a profit is essential to staying in business.

But I wonder if it’s necessary to besiege us with merchandise for one holiday before another has even arrived?

There used to be an order to events, a season for all things under the sun as Ecclesiastes proposed. That meant we could expect to see the trappings of Thanksgiving show up only after the Halloween candy was gone. And Christmas carols begin echoing through the streets only after the Thanksgiving turkey leftovers finally disap-

peared from the fridge.

It used to work that way. Not only that, but school itself never started until the Tuesday after Labor Day. Now the kids are ordered back to the classroom while the family is still in the middle of summer vacation. I wonder if there is that much more for kids to learn these days that they need an extra month to do it.

When I was a kid, school started in September. We got three days off for Thanksgiving and two weeks for Christmas. After that, school days dragged along tediously until the term ended around the first of June.

Something else: Somewhere around Thanksgiving the mailman delivered that most sacred of publications — the Christmas catalog. That gave every kid in the nation a month of slowly turning pages, marking special items with a pencil and working up a whole series of creative hints about what they want for Christmas. It was always an exciting time.

But everyone is in a hurry today. The holidays become a blur. And I really miss leisurely thumbing through the Christmas catalog.

Zionsville Food Pantry feeds hungry

Commentary by Brad Thompson Housed in Zionsville Presbyterian Church and operated by volunteers from the community, Zionsville Food Pantry distributes food to those in need every Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. and each Friday from noon to 2 p.m. to serve residents of Boone County.

Many Boone County families lack reliable access to nutritious food. According to a 2014 report by SAVI, an economic research group created and managed by The Polis Center, Boone County has one of the highest childhood poverty rates in central Indiana and a food insecurity rate of 11.2 percent. Yet, federal and state programs only go so far. For example, according SAVI, 31 percent of Indiana’s food insecure are not eligible for federal nutrition programs and must depend on assistance provided by food banks.

The Zionsville Food Pantry helps fill that void with food it obtains from Gleaners Food Bank and other sources, including grocery stores and community groups such as the U.S. Postal Service, Ascension Health, local schools and Scouts that conduct food drives.

The food pantry distributes that food through the efforts of dozens of volunteers. On occasion, other groups that serve those in need offer services, including the Lions Club, which periodically provides free vision screening.

New Town Hall provides more space for employees, public amenities

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Standing in the lobby of Zionsville’s new Town Hall building, Mayor Tim Haak and Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro watched as demolition crews across the parkcover story ing lot shattered more than a decade of municipal history into millions of pieces and snapped nearby ash trees like toothpicks.

Zionsville’s old Town Hall was coming down.

The town experienced tremendous growth and change with its offices headquartered in the 56-year-old former church building. Haak and Mitro have many good memories there, but it wasn’t hard saying goodbye. As the structure aged, employees ran out of space, suffered through a failing HVAC system that nearly got the building condemned a few years ago and, according to Mitro, learned to live with an “interesting” smell.

“The employees put up with a lot in that old building,” he said.

But now?

“They’ve died and gone to heaven,” said Mitro, whose new office includes a view of the Rail Trail and surrounding forested area.

And the increased space and new amenities aren’t the only reason they’re smiling. The $10.25 millon project finished ahead of schedule without exceeding its budget.

The Town of Zionsville will hold a dedication for the Town Hall at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at 1100 W. Oak St. Mayor Tim Haak and the Zionsville Town Council invite the public to see the new building during a ceremony with guided tours, giveaways, appetizers and more.

The event is free and no RSVP is required.

The problems

Before moving to the north end of the parking lot, the Town of Zionsville housed its offices in the former Zionsville United Methodist Church building at 1100 W. Oak St. ZUMC moved to a bigger space on Whitestown Road in 2001.

Besides the mounting maintenance issues, employees struggled with the layout of the building. It didn’t include an employee break room. Events in the community room often were overcrowded, and the town council perched where the pulpit used to be in a room that still looked more like a sanctuary than government center. The expanse of hard wooden pews often sat mostly empty and cold.

The new building remedies those problems and more.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Haak said. “We benefit from having enough space to work in, increased efficiencies between departments and a lot more access for the public.”

‘Far better’

Town employees are still “over the moon” about their new working conditions, Haak said, which now includes a dedicated employee break room with three refrigerators, plenty of windows to let in natural light and back hallways that allow employees from different departments to easily connect with each other, even though the areas appear to the public to be separate.

But the 42,600-square-foot building also was designed with the public in mind, Haak said. It will be accessible between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily to give Rail Trail users a place to relax, refill water bottles or use the restrooms. A public plaza behind the building is expected to be complete in the spring.

The second-floor community room is double the size of the previous building and will give nonprofits and other organizations a place to host meetings and events. It’s also home to conference rooms available for public use, the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce and Boone County Senior Services.

“Sometimes it’s hard to conceptualize something on paper until you get in and see it,” Haak said. “The second floor is a prime example. That turned out far better than any of us could have expected.”

Looking ahead

As employees settle into their new offices, they don’t expect to move again anytime soon. With Boone County

and Zionsville expecting population growth in the coming years, the town is ready to expand with it. Approximately 5,000 square feet on the second floor will remain unfinished until it’s needed and the building is designed for expansion on its southwest side in the future.

The future has big changes in store for the site of the old Town Hall, too. With the old building nearly gone, construction crews will soon add a roadway to bisect the site and align with Brendan Way across Oak Street.

The town plans to sell the land in two parcels, one on each side of the new road, to developers. The west parcel will go out to bid soon, with its buyer expected to be known by the end of the year, Haak said. The site is in a tax increment financing district, meaning that new taxes collected from its future businesses will be used to support town development — ­ in this case, the new Town Hall.

But for now, employees are just glad to have finally made the move. “(We’re) happy in our new home,” Mitro said.

Embracing imperfections

Commentary by Terry Anker A recent weekend found me in the company of a number of not-yet betrothed young men. One had jumped the broom, but most were simply considering making the move. Indeed, my long marriage (longer in most cases than the entirety of their lives) sparked curiosity. Why do some marriages last when others do not? That answer, if a complete one exists, certainly eludes me.

Marry well, if you can, but always expect to find, and seek, compromise. Make little note of your partner’s peccadillos and hope they will do the same. Find room in your lives for each other. There is joy in knowing that the other person is there, always attentive to you and your needs.

Try to constrain your annoying habits.

Remind your spouse that a vice indulged at home is always better than one unseen.

Clean up after yourself – every time and without exception.

But most of all, tolerate imperfection.

Cigars smell. Men stink. And, I’ve never really liked the aroma of strong perfume. It makes me sneeze. So, what? If my bride loves the fragrance, I love it, too. I carry my own very pronounced imperfections. Those in my life who love and accommodate me have come to understand that truth and value my happiness, as do I theirs. In this there is no horse trading, scorekeeping, snarky comment or resentment. And, why should there be?

Seems to me anyone that dines there as often as we do could get a letter from Flap Jacks stating how often we’re there.

I had to go to the Apple Store. Again.

Actually, the visit marked my third in 10 days because the original humor repair to my daughter’s phone lasted until we got home, and the second time I didn’t have four hours to wait for a Genius Bar opening. As I sat on a wooden cube resisting the siren call of Solitaire on my Samsung (yes, Chez Wilson is pro-Android, except for our one rebel child), I took a moment to observe my surroundings.

For starters, the millennials who work at Apple are enviably cool. They come in all shapes, sizes, races, ethnicities and represent a full spectrum of wardrobe preferences. From the detail-minded, shirt tuckedin, headphone-wearing floor manager to the laid-back, ripped jeans, hipster glassessporting tech gurus, I found myself wanting to be 20 years younger and childless.

Then you have customers, who make the sport of people watching truly entertaining.

I saw baby boomers struggling through a clinic on simply “How to work your iPad” and a heavily bearded man wearing a T-shirt that didn’t quite cover his substantial gut ordering his toddler grandson to “Git over here!” The woman next to me had triple ear piercings and a nose ring, and across the room sat a fellow dance mom (hi, SL!). Not surprsinginly, there were scores of angsty teens and young professionals trying out the latest gadgets, but I also spotted a Colts player and several people, besides myself, on Samsungs. It’s still too soon to share my opinion of the gentleman behind me with a noticeable GI issue.

I definitely prefer my Samsung but it’s always intriguing to visit the Apple Store.

Mary Ellen passed along some comments she had heard about me at her book club.

“Kathy says your newspaper humor column makes her laugh, and Cara, our hostess, told me she thinks you’re quite amusing on TV.” “Wow, thanks for sharing that!”

“But Dick, I have to ask you this: How come you’re not so funny at home? People keep telling me how humorous you are and how much fun it must be to live with you, but I don’t see it. Maybe you leave it all in the basement where you write your column, or at the remote locations where you do your TV segments?”

“I’m that dull, huh?”

“Oh, don’t get me wrong. We’ve had a great marriage for 38 years and I’ve been perfectly happy. It’s just not been the laugh riot everyone else assumes it is.”

It was a startling observation — and not an unfair one. When we are out with other couples we all laugh. Waiters love to trade jabs with me. The UPS guy and I always yuck it up on my porch. I never leave the dry cleaners without exchanging a few jokes with the clerk. But apparently, I save

nothing for my relationship with my wife. I only have so much to give, and maybe I give it all at the office.

“Mary Ellen, this is your fault. I can’t kid about your cooking: it’s outstanding. You dress impeccably, you have perfect hair and you are very intelligent. I need some material to work with.”

“I must admit, Dick, you are making a convincing argument.”

I was determined to make things right.

We sat across from each other at the dinner table that evening.

“Dick, you are trying way too hard. The red foam clown nose is not original. And you keep kicking me with those giant shoes.”

When a slight grin appeared on my wife’s face, I knew I was making progress.

“I could try some snappy repartee at dinner every night. I know I could be as funny at home as I am at work.”

“Oh, please,” Mary Ellen said, “don’t make me laugh.”

Kas Miller and her husband, Donny, have lived in Whitestown since 2014 with their five children. Donny is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. Kas works in insurance. Her company is the exclusive agency for retail stores within NICRA, the National Ice Cream Retailers Association, which inspired the idea for her family to take a chance on the business venture.

“I’ve met a lot of ice cream store owners and realized there was a need in the Whitestown/Zionsville area, so I reached out to some of them and we thought this was a good time to try it out,” Kas said.

Fundae’s will serve 32 flavors of ice cream in a rotation. Its ice cream comes from The Chocolate Shoppe in Madison, Wis., which has won multiple awards. Kas said it’s the best ice cream option because of its rich and creamy taste as well as its natural ingredients. Fundae’s will

Alzheimer’s disease: myths and facts big difference in the effectiveness of these drugs.

This November, countless Americans are calling for awareness and collecting donations on behalf of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. While nearly 5.5 million people are currently living with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in the United States — meaning the disease affects approximately one in two families directly — many misconceptions about Alzheimer’s prevail. These are the most common myths and their corresponding facts:

MYTH: If one of your parents gets Alzheimer’s, so will you.

FACT: Less than five percent of all cases of Alzheimer’s are cases of familial Alzheimer’s disease.

MYTH: Alzheimer’s is a normal part of aging.

FACT: A small amount of memory loss is common as we age, but dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are certainly not. To understand the difference, compare misplacing your keys to forgetting where you live. Being forgetful is inconvenient, but Alzheimer’s disease eventually debilitates every aspect of day-to-day living.

MYTH: Alzheimer’s isn’t deadly.

FACT: Alzheimer’s typically progresses over a 14-year period and always results in a brain so weakened that life-sustaining systems in the body ultimately fail. It’s a fatal brain disease with no known cure.

MYTH: Only old people get Alzheimer’s.

FACT: While the majority of individuals with the disease experience symptoms only after the age of 65, early-onset Alzheimer’s affects about five percent of all Alzheimer’s patients. These people experience symptoms in their 50s, 40s or even 30s.

MYTH: There are treatments that slow or stop Alzheimer’s from progressing.

FACT: To date, there are no treatments that can stop or slow the gradual onslaught of Alzheimer’s disease.

However, there are medications that can help manage symptoms. Early diagnosis can make a

‘Broadway and Beyond’ set for CAT Theatre

Wolf, who co-founded the theater company theater Nickel Plate Players with his wife Sandy Thorne in 2014, is presenting “Broadway and Beyond” at The Cat Theatre in Carmel, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and 18. The performances feature Wolf and Jessica Hawkins, both Fishers residents. Wolf said he agreed to partner with Will Wood of The Cat Theatre for certain productions.

“There are several productions that have large casts of performers, which is too big for Hawkins that space,” Wolf said. “So, we started with ‘Dueling Pianos,’ and then I decided I wanted to create a smaller cabaret-type show and one in which I could come out from behind my piano. The (Indianapolis-area) theater community sees me in one light. They don’t know I performed on stage as an actor. I do a little dancing, so I thought it would be a good time to show the community what I do.”

Wolf then thought who would be the best person to share the stage with for this show. Hawkins was in one of Nickel Plate’s original productions, “Beehive,” in 2014.

“I immediately noticed not only her ability and talent, but her professionalism,” Wolf said.

In addition, Wolf was a fan of Hawkins’ appearance as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre’s “La Casa Azul” in 2015. Wolf received permission from Hancock for Hawkins to perform some songs for this show.

“He even offered up some of the tracks for us to use,” said Wolf, adding the tracks feature a full orchestra. “He’s been so supportive and so gracious.”

In addition, Wolf said there will be classics, duets and solos from Broadway and classics from famous Piano Men. Hawkins is excited about the variety of the performances.

“This is really fun because I get to sing songs that are not part of a specific character,” Hawkins said. “There are a lot of songs I’ll never get to sing in a show. Some are more romantic.

Some are ridiculous and funny. Gregory’s songs are a little more dramatic, definitely deeper.”

Wolf will perform songs from his play, “Ten Pin Alli,” which he co-wrote and directed.

“It’s really nice to be able to do songs from different shows,” Wolf said. “You can’t pop into Sondheim (music) in the middle of a Rodgers and Hammerstein show. We get to mix it up and present a lot of different writers and materials.”

Wolf serves as artistic director of Nickel Plate Players, which operates under the parent company of The Indiana Theatre Company. Among the shows he created was “Indiana The Musical” as part of the bicentennial celebration in 2016.

‘Les Miserables’ will push actors and musicians

By Heather Lusk editorial@youarecurrent.com Taking on a production that is almost entirely singing is not an easy feat for professionals, much less amateur theater performers.

But director Mikayla Koharchik was confident there was enough talent at Zionsville Community High School to stage the school edition of “Les Miserables.”

“I feel like we’re doing the show justice,” Koharchik said.

Although high school students have always performed in the orchestra pit for ZCHS musicals, there’s an additional challenge of playing for two hours with the production. Koharchik received a grant from the Zionsville Education Foundation for professional musicians to perform with the students, assist with their parts and serve as mentors.

“It definitely helps to have someone who is better than you teach you to play better,” said senior Declan Nelligan, who plays guitar. He estimated the orchestra for previous productions was about half the size.

“They’re helping us all grow as musicians,” said Rude, who plays French horn.

He served on the crew for previous performances and is also impressed with the work being done behind the scenes.

“It’s much larger than anything I’ve seen us do before,” Rude said.

Koharchik said the performance is the biggest she’s undertaken in terms of scope and size.

“Everything else pales in comparison,” she said.

The musical follows the life of Jean Valjean after his release from prison after the French Revolution. The school edition, considered PG-13, is abbreviated for length and might not be appropriate for the entire family, according to Koharchik.

It’s official: Homeowners are staying put longer and moving less. At least, that’s the abbreviated summary of the WSJ study released last home improvment week. We’ve been experiencing this for a few years now, and the trend is considerably exacerbated by the tight home inventory market.

Frustrations are fueled by land use regulations, making it more difficult to build new homes and mega investors gobbling up hundreds or thousands of homes for rentals, thus precluding them from the market for new home buyers.

Conversations among industry professionals verify these thoughts. My real estate friends are selling plenty of homes, but a squeezed inventory is limiting success. My remodeling and patio/landscape friendly competitors are quite busy, too. It’s a frothy business climate!

Here’s another interesting trend, something that we are personally experiencing with a growing list of friends. Although we would like to downsize, the cost of the new and smaller homes on the market cost more than what we can sell our existing home for. So, moving would prompt additional debt or liquidating stocks to pay cash. Or ‌ COMMON STORY Consumer appetite for new debt, or lack

thereof, is compelling many of us to stay put longer. And why not? Most of us love our homes and our neighbors, we just want ... (you can fill in your own blank). It could be an updated master bathroom or new kitchen. Many still dream of their future outdoor living space where everyone can gather under a shady pergola with a sexy fire feature and have a blast. Sounds great to me!

Prague Castle and diversity Commentary by Don Knebel The “Guinness Book of World Records identifies” Prague Castle as the world’s largest castle. If a collection of buildings can be considered a castle, travel Prague Castle also deserves the record for the greatest architectural diversity within a castle.

In the ninth century A.D., Duke Borivoj I, the first Christian ruler of Bohemia, fortified an 18-acre site atop a hill overlooking the Vltava River. A wall and a moat protected the palace and a few wooden residences, and Borivoj soon erected a stone church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 920, Duke Vratislaus I built the Romanesque Basilica of St. George, which became a convent.

Over time, Bohemian rulers added buildings and improved the fortifications. In the 14th century, the site became the seat of Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor, who made the Prague Castle his residence and began construction of St. Vitus Cathedral, modeled on the great Gothic cathedrals of Western Europe. When the Habsburgs took up the Czech throne in 1536, they moved

the seat of power to Vienna and used Prague Castle as their summer residence.

After a major fire in 1541, they rebuilt sections of the castle in the Renaissance style and returned the imperial office to Prague.

In the 18th century, Empress Maria Theresa added neoclassical buildings to the mix.

Today, Prague Castle is the official residence of the president of the Czech Republic. The Republic’s crown jewels, among the most valuable in Europe, are maintained in St. Vitus Cathedral, one of four churches currently extant within the Castle. Most of the castle is open to the public, which enters through a Baroque gate flanked by 18th century statues of fighting giants. The gate is over what was originally a moat, with the castle now protected by guards wearing uniforms created by the Czech-born costume designer for “Amadeus.”

Did you know most prospective employers check your social media account as an unofficial grammar guy step in the job interview process?

Yikes. That means he or she probably scrolled through to see your late-night, all-caps rant about whichever political party you oppose, as well as your “Bachelorette” finale live-tweeting session (I can’t believe she picked him, either).

The same goes for basic grammar and spelling. Today I’m tackling five Facebook foibles and Twitter trip-ups that very well may prevent you from getting hired for the job you want.

If you’re looking for a great job, you need to know your grammar. Did you catch what I did there? Too often I see people use “your” when they should use “you’re.” Your is something you own or possess; you’re is the contraction (or mash up, as I like to call it) of “you” and “are.”

When you write “I hope the Colts don’t lose again,” you likely hope they score more points than the Patriots. When you

write “I hope the Colts don’t loose again,” you’re suggesting they remember to put on their belts so their pants don’t fall down. See the difference?

“There” names a place, thing or the existence of something: I think I left my chapstick over there. To check if you’re using “there” correctly, see if you can replace “there” with “here.”

“Their” shows possession: I can’t believe those chowder-eating cheaters the Patriots deflated their footballs. To check if you’re using “their” correctly, see if you can replace “their” with “our.”

“They’re” is a mash up of “they” and “are:” Huzzah, they’re having a sale on Burt’s Bees chapstick at Target! To check if you’re using “they’re” correctly, see if you can replace “they’re” with “they are.”

Yes, in addition to the topics of your social media posts, employers also look at the content of your characters.
