DNA match, Facebook lead police to murder suspect

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com An Indianapolis man has been arrested for the Sept. 28 murder of a Zionsville resident. He is also believed crime to have allegedly fired shots at two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept. district headquarters in October.

Damoine Wilcoxson, 21, barricaded himself and an infant Wilcoxson in his apartment near 46th Street and Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis as police attempted to make the arrest Oct. 31.

He shot at officers, who did not shoot back but instead used tear gas. At approximately 4:30 p.m., Wilcoxson was arrested, and no one was injured.

“It’s been a good day, a long day, a dangerous day. I praise God nobody got hurt,” Zionsville Police Dept. Chief Robert Knox said Oct. 31. “Now let’s move on to that next chapter. I’m very proud of the investigative team. They worked virtually around the clock with a very strong determination to chase this thing to its rightful conclusion.”

According to a probable cause affidavit, police connected Wilcoxson to the murder after determining that the same gun used in Zionsville was also used in shootings Oct. 4 and 13 at two IMPD district headquarters buildings. Investigators obtained DNA samples from shell casings and notes left at the IMPD shootings that matched Wilcoxson, who had been arrested for robbery in Ohio.

Wilcoxson is accused of murdering John Clements, 82, in his driveway on Terrace Drive as he checked the mail. For weeks, Zionsville police said the only evidence they had was witness reports that the suspect was a black male driving a white Impala.

Police found footage of what they believe to be the Impala used during the crime through a camera at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and on the dash cam of an officer on his way to the scene. After identifying Wilcoxson, they discovered an IMPD case report from July that stated Wilcoxson pulled a firearm and threatened to kill his girlfriend inside of her white 2012 Chevrolet Impala.

Police also used Facebook to gather evidence.

Wilcoxson accepted a friend request from an undercover officer, who was then able to read information on his profile that was not public.

According to the probable cause affidavit, among the information they found was a rant about kill-

ing people and terminology similar to the notes found at the IMPD shootings.

Knox refused to comment on how or why Wilcoxson selected his victim but stated that Zionsville investigators are working to gather more information from Wilcoxson.

“We’ve had two investigators assigned full time to this.

They’ve just done yeoman’s work,” Knox said. “Hopefully (the arrest) assuages some of the anguish in the community about this awful thing Clements that happened. (Zionsville) is a great community. It’s still a very safe community, but evil came and visited our community on Sept. 28. This was pure evil.”

At a press conference Nov. 1, Knox said that he could not speculate on Wilcoxson’s motive in targeting Clements.

“I do not know why Mr. Clements would have been targeted,” he said. “It does seem extremely random.”

He also said that the DNA evidence was key in the investigation, and if his DNA hadn’t been collected upon Wilcoxson’s arrest for robbery in Ohio the case may not have been solved at this point.

In Indiana, DNA is only collected upon conviction.

Knox and other officials involved with the investigation would like to see that changed.

Wilcoxson has been charged with murder and is being held in the Boone County Jail. He faces a maximum of 65 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

Their diligent work brought this to a quick resolution so that others would not be harmed. We are also very thankful to our friends and neighbors in Zionsville who were able to provide information to the police related to the investigation.”

According to a probable cause affidavit, neighbors rushed to the aid of Clements after the shooting and provided a description of the vehicle and suspect to police that helped lead to his arrest.

The Zionsville Town Council held a morning meeting Oct. 31 to approve a budget and more..

What happened: The Town Council approved the 2017 budget and salary ordinance.

What it means: The $29.5 million budget includes the addition of employees in the police and fire departments, as Boone County will implement a local income tax for public safety beginning next year. The town’s tax rate will decrease from 2.1382 percent to 2.0556 percent.

What’s next: The budget and tax rate go into effect Jan. 1.

What happened: The council approved a $10,000 incentive for Lewellyn Technology for a $1.5 million expansion.

What it means: Lewellyn Technology, which provides services to reduce and address electrical safety hazards, is planning a 3,000-square-foot expansion at 6210 Technology Center Drive. It is expected to create up to 30 new jobs by 2021.

What’s next: Renovations are expected to begin in early 2017, with the new space expected to be ready to use by the summer.

What happened: The council tabled a vote on allowing a gas station at the southeast corner of US 421 and E 300 S. What it means: One resident spoke against allowing a gas station at this site, expressing concerns over light pollution, the smell and more. Several others spoke against this use at the Zionsville Plan Commission’s October meeting.

The council tabled the issue to its first meeting in November, which is in the evening, to allow for additional residents to provide feedback if they desire.

What’s next: The Zionsville Town Council will discuss the matter at 7 p.m. Nov. 7.

ZCHS band savors its first state title

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Zionsville Community High School Marching Eagles senior drum major Sam Stucky, it was fitting achievement that this year’s show earned a state title.

The championship was in the ISSMA Scholastic A division, which is determined through a combination of school size and band size.

The band captured the honor in the Oct. 22 competition at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis. This is the first championship for the marching band, which ZCHS Director of Bands Tom Landrum said provided a wonderful reward for all of the hard work put in by everyone involved.

“This is easily the best show we’ve ever had, awards notwithstanding,” Stucky said.

“We had some staffing changes this year, including a new color guard director. While some bands would deal with this kind of stuff badly, we dealt with it masterfully.”

A strong rehearsal routine was key.

“We kept the energy going throughout the season, and we were able to score our highest score in school history,” Stucky said.

Other drum majors were Theresa Bottorff and Sam Ferguson.

Landrum said the show ends with one performer making a graceful exit from the performance area through large golden gates.

The band created a special effect with fog and a bright light coming from the other side of the gates, which brought the show to a close with someone going “Into the Light,” the performance title.

“This was a very emotional and perfect ending of the show for many of us, and apparently the judges appreciated it as well,” said Landrum, in his 17th year as ZCHS. As a state champion, Zionsville put on an exhibition performance Oct. 29 at Lucas Oil

Stadium.

“This achievement took a lot of hard work and dedication by everyone involved,” Landrum said.

Sophomore flute player Kathleen Donoho said the focus the members maintained was key.

“It’s been kind of a crazy season,” Donoho said. “People have gotten injured, people have moved out of state, new people have joined to fill in those spots. It could have all been a train wreck, but everyone worked so hard and that hard work paid off.”

Donoho will always remember walking off the field after the band’s performance in the state finals.

“We were all standing around hugging and a lot of us were crying, and I had this moment where I realized that I didn’t care if we never got to do the show again because we could not have asked for a better show to be our last,” Donoho said.

Sophomore guard member Sawyer Lehman said the crowd deserves an assist for increasing the band’s energy.

“I have never heard an audience cheer that loud for something that I was doing,” Lehman said. “It was a great feeling that I will never forget.”

French students visit Zionsville

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Thirty-five French students are experiencing an American Halloween and election first-hand as they spend two weeks education in Zionsville as part of Zionsville Community High School’s exchange program.

On Oct. 31, the students met with Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak, who explained his role in town government. Prior to their visit to town hall, students participated in a scavenger hunt on Main Street, tracking down items such as a knight in shining armor, a white picket fence and a Jack-o-lantern.

Fabrice Robardey, a professor of history at JJ Henner secondary school in Altkirch, France, is among the four faculty members traveling with the students.

Robardey expects the trip will help students gain “a better understanding of the country from the inside. We learn about the U.S. from the outside, and TV and movies,” he said. “They get to know a different culture from the inside.”

All of the students are part of a foreign language immersion program through which they study social studies, math and physical education.

Robardey said several students are acting as journalists on the trip, submitting daily articles of their experiences to the local press in Altkirch.

In June, 10 American students taking French at ZCHS will travel to Altkirch, along with Principal Tim East and French teacher Amy Conrad. East said they’ve been participating in the program for three years with the same school, with different junior-aged students each time.

“It’s a fresh group each year,” he said.

During their two weeks in Indiana, the students will visit Lucas Oil Stadium, the Indiana State Museum and Indiana University.

The organization helps local communities with bat conservation by offering bat house installation guides, hosting community events with their bat ambassadors and educating the public on how to create bat-friendly gardens.

“We try to not only educate, but to activate people,” Marcato said.

The Bat Encounters program includes a live demonstration with four species of bats. During the program, presenters will also help to dispel some of the myths about bats, educate the community on the importance of bats to the ecosystem and answer questions.

Marcato also noted that bats are important pollinators and pest controllers. According to Marcato, bats pollinate more than 400 species of flowers and fruits, including avocados, peaches and agave, from which tequila is derived.

“So every time we have a margarita, we should be cheers-ing a bat,” Marcato said.

The Bat Encounters program is free. The Zion Nature Center will collect items for the Zionsville Food Pantry at the event and requests that attendees bring one item for donation.

Students hold mock elections – On Nov. 8, students across Indiana, including at Eagle Elementary and Zionsville Middle School will elect their own governor, president and senator in a show of active citizenship through Indiana Kids’ Election (IKE), an award-winning mock election program. With its special emphasis on encouraging students to develop one’s voting habit at an early age, IKE attempts to emulate the election process as closely as possible.

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library will be invaded by prehistoric creatures in November centering around the children’s book, “The Edge of Extinction: The programs Ark Plan.”

“The library is really excited to celebrate a local author,” said Youth Librarian Julie Myers, who organized the month of events. “Everybody loves dinosaurs.”

“The Edge of Extinction” series takes place in a world where dinosaurs have taken over Earth. During the Dangerous Dino Dinner Nov. 14, Zionsville author Laura Martin will explain how she researched her book.

“The thing about dinosaur research is it’s changing constantly,” said Martin, noting that new discoveries are made every day. “I had to make sure all my research was as up-to-date as possible.”

The book, the first in a two-part series, will be available for purchase with some copies being given away in a random drawing to those who have registered for the dinner.

That evening Martin will share clues about her second book, which takes place around Lake Michigan and contains “prehistoric marine reptiles” that weren’t technically dinosaurs but were their aquatic equivalent.

“I love the book, because it’s action-packed and high-interest,” said Myers, adding the story is not overly frightening or gory for younger readers. “It’s good, clean action.”

The program, for children in grades 3 to 7, includes a pizza dinner. Reservations are required and can be made on the library website at zionsvillelibrary.org Also during Dinovember, to earn prizes children can search for dinosaurs that will move throughout the library. Dino decorations have been created by local Girl Scout troops, and Nov. 10 children from kindergarten through second grade can make a volcano during the Prehistoric Discovery Day from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

Enjoying our mini vacations Commentary by Ward Degler My wife Jeanne and I have been talking about taking a vacation for more than a year now. Somehow, however, it plain talk has never gotten past the talking phase. Many reasons, I guess. Mostly, “lacka.” You know, lacka time, lacka money, lacka motivation.

We were talking about this the other day and realized that what we have been doing instead is taking mini vacations. I’m not talking about weekend trips to here and there – although talk about things we could do over the weekend in Chicago have intensified recently.

Our mini vacations, it turns out, are trips to the store, to church, across town to visit family. They seldom take more than a couple hours but are filled with all the primary ingredients of an extended vacation.

For example, lunch at a dockside café on Geist Reservoir has many of the same flavorings as a seaside stretch in New England or a wharfside resort in Milwaukee.

A quick trip to the grocery store the other day was filled with the same awe and wonder of a foliage parade in Vermont. Our trees

are every bit as colorful as theirs. And, not counting the cost of the groceries, it only cost about 75 cents in gas and wear and tear on the car.

Altogether, we’ve taken about 20 mini vacations already this fall, and we are busy planning others. A one-hour drive to Kokomo will provide vistas of some of the most beautiful farm fields and woodlots in the world – beauty to rival Canada’s finest. Besides, my favorite aunt lives in Kokomo, and we can take her to lunch with the same enthusiasm we would in Moscow or San Francisco – and with a much smaller tab at the end of the day.

There are other joys to the vacation mini persuasion. We don’t have to learn a foreign language or bone up on strange traffic laws.

No poring over confusing street maps.

And, if the weather is rotten, we can always stay home. We lacka very little there.

A parting glass Commentary by Jonathan Matthes Well, here it is, the last installment. I want to say a big “thank you” to all of you who have followed the entire series, or picked it up halfway, or just started. I’ve had a blast, and hopefully you’ve had some fun reading along, too.

If you want more “Inaugurally Addressed,” just incessantly email the editors. Remember, the more obnoxious a little kid is, the more likely the trip to Disney World becomes. But seriously, we’ve come a long way and covered a lot of ground. Robert Todd Lincoln, check.

James Buchanan, check. Calvin Coolidge, quadruple check. The next time someone says, “This election is the worst,” you can say, “Well, let me tell you about Andrew Jackson.”

But that’s a long enough stroll down memory lane. I thought it’d be nice to offer you these three Hoosier-election factoids as a parting glass. Enjoy.

1. Mike Pence could become the fifth Hoosier vice president. Schuyler Colfax in 1868, Thomas Hendricks in 1884, Thomas R. Marshall in 1912 and 1916, and Dan

2. Three men with significant Indiana ties have been president: William Henry Harrison, Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Harrison. Benjamin, an Indiana resident, was William’s grandson. Little Ben was 7 when William died, meaning they were all alive at the same time.

3. Indiana has been a part of 50 elections and has been with the winning ticket 37 times. That’s a .740 batting average, or the same as LeBron James’ career free-throw percentage.

Interesting, right?

Anyway, the election is Nov. 8. I know we’re all not exactly pumped about the prospects.

But if there’s a takeaway from “Inaugurally Addressed,” it’s that we all get to do it again in four years. Whether that’s hopeful or dreadful, I leave up to you.

ZCHS sophomore Maeta Hall ready to make her mark on national music scene

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Maeta Hall has wanted to be a star vocalist for as long as she can remember.

Her mother, Tobie Hall, said cover story that ambition is clearly displayed in their home movies.

“She’d always say, ‘Introducing Maeta Hall,’ and then she would sing,” Tobie said. “In every home video, she has a microphone and she’s singing. It’s kind of a family joke that she was destined to be a singer.”

Now the Zionsville Community High School sophomore is moving closer to her dream with the release of her first single with the help of her manager, Willie “Bum Bum” Baker, who has also worked with Beyonce and Pink.

“It’s mostly pop mixed with R&B (rhythm and blues),” Hall said. “I used to hate pop, but I’m getting into it. I thought pop was just what’s out now. But I didn’t realize there are so many different kinds of pop. I thought I was going to have to change my voice and change who I am, but I didn’t.”

Hall made the switch to more pop on the advice of her management team.

“She was adamant she was singing R&B, but they would laugh and say, ‘You have to do pop, honey,’” Tobie said. “They were saying your second album you can make it more what you want. They take the songs and put them out one at a time, because they have to decide what the fans want.”

Hall released a single, “Headlights,” in September.

The song, which was written by Sam August and Hall, is on iTunes and Spotify.

“We have 18 songs, but we’re not going to use all of them on the album,” Hall said.

Hall records at Baker’s house in Atlanta. He is co-owner of the record label Delab Music and has been nominated for a Grammy Award.

“We write together and develop her sound and direction,” Baker said. “We’re getting her ready for the social media push. She’s continued to develop herself. She’s a great musician.”

Baker said he would still describe her style as more R&B than pop.

“At 16, she is very focused,” Baker said. “We develop her, but she said this is what I want to sing about. This is my sound. This is what girls my age like. We take guidance from her and help to produce.”

Baker said a friend from his North Central High School days had called to tell him about Hall three years ago.

“They sent me a -Tobie Hall video, and it just blew me away,” Baker said. “We immediately got her down to Atlanta and started to work with her.”

Hall, who started playing the piano when she was 5 years old and began singing at age 8, did interviews at Radio Disney and J-14 Magazine in Los Angeles in September to promote her songs. She went to New York City for an interview with YSBnow, a print and digital publication for teens.

Tobie said her daughter was approached about doing a reality show but eventually turned it down because of a restrictive contract.

Hall auditioned for “America’s Got Talent” in Indianapolis about two years ago. “(Her manager) wanted her to do it just for experience,” Tobie said.

Hall said it wasn’t a good fit, and that she is most suited for an audition for “The Voice.”

“I think I would be good at that one,” said Hall, whose performances can be found on her website (maetasworld.com) and YouTube.

but he won’t admit it,” Hall said. Her father, John, plays the drums, too, and is a ZCHS graduate. Tobie grew up in Zionsville and graduated from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.

State law change to election ballot impacts straight-party voting editorial@youarecurrent.com According to the Association of Indiana Counties, Inc., voters planning to cast a straight-party ballot in the Nov. 8 election need to be aware of changes to the general election ballot which could impact their final ballot selections.

Senate Enrolled Act 61, which takes effect for the first time in the upcoming general election, requires voters to select individual candidates when voting for any at-large offices.

“Voters still have the option to cast a straight-party ballot, but it is important to note this option will not cast votes for candidates running for any at-large offices, school board positions, nor will choosing the straight-party option cast votes for any public questions,” stated Debbie Walker,

president of Association of Clerks of Circuit Courts of Indiana. “Voters must proceed to that position on the ballot and make their selections to cast their votes for those offices or questions.”

The Association of Clerks of Circuit Courts of Indiana and the Association of Indiana Counties urge voters to educate themselves about their ballot options.

Walker, who also serves as Henry County Clerk of the Circuit Court, said, “On behalf of all clerks of the circuit court of Indiana and the Association of Indiana Counties, we want to ensure voters are aware of this new law and do not inadvertently fail to cast their votes for at-large offices.”

‘Writing Home’ returns to Theater at the Fort Nov. 11 news@currentzionsville.com Partnerships for Lawrence is giving veterans a chance to express themselves through veterans day the written and spoken word at its upcoming sessions of “Writing Home: The Stories of American Veterans in Words, Dance and Theater.”

In an effort to tie the past, present and future together, the organization said it is “allowing people to ponder and experience home in a unique way.”

The theater piece will bring to life a series of letters from the Indiana Historical Society’s collections between Normal Vandivier, an Indiana naval avia-

tor stationed in the Pacific during World War II, and his parents.

Later, the event will be capped by the readings of veterans previously involved in writing workshops at the Indiana Writers Center. Creative dance interpretations will be performed by Dance Kaleidoscope.

As attendees enter the auditorium at the Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave., they will be asked to share thoughts about home and a veteran they know as music plays, or, if they are a veteran, they will be welcome to share their own thoughts of home.

After the program, guests will be invited to enjoy refreshments and discuss the program with others.

Explore Atterbury-Bakalar Commentary by Jennifer Ingersoll The Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum is located on the former Bakalar Air Force Base and current Columbus MuVETERANS DAY nicipal Airport. Originally known as Atterbury Army Air Field when built in 1942, the base was renamed Bakalar and used for reservist training through 1970. William Atterbury and John Bakalar were Hoosier war heroes. To preserve the rich past of the Base, the museum displays items of Army/Air Force history during the periods of World War II through Vietnam.

Exhibits include an F-4 Phantom jet, displayed outside the entrance as well as handcrafted 1/8-scale model aircraft some with a 15foot wingspan. Meticulously created, all of the model planes either flew from the air base or were flown by one of the museum volunteers.

A barracks display shares the tight and sparse living quarters for the trainees, while the World War II glider pilot exhibit exposes the unbelievable sacrifices made by the brave men.

Other exhibits include the Tuskegee Airmen and a World War II jeep that on examination show the driver and passenger were literally sitting on the gas tank of the vehicle. There is an exhibit dedicated to a brave set of World War II pilots that did not receive recognition by

the military. Known as the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots, or WASPs, these women were not allowed to fly in combat, yet were often used for extremely dangerous missions, including test pilots.

The Air Museum is free admission and open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesdays - Saturdays. A self-paced museum, guests can take their time to explore. But to really know the history and understand the sacrifices taken, talk to one of the museum volunteers, many former pilots and servicemen.

The Indiana Historical Society is giving area residents a chance delve into Civil War-era letters from soldiers, wives, civil war friends and family members when it holds a special program Nov. 12 in light of Veterans Day on Nov. 11 “Tales of War from Indiana’s Civil War Regiments” will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis.

Speaker L. Bao Bui, a visiting assistant professor from Ball State University, will use the letters to show how Hoosiers lived through and experienced the Civil War through the writing and sharing of personal triumphs and tragedies.

It’s the best we could do?

Nearly two years ago, we predicted here that Hillary Clinton would win the race for the White House. Polling this week leaves us in doubt about that. Her opponent, Donald Trump, has gained mightily in sampling - not so much because he’s “the answer” but because she is “the question.” With the unraveling of the Clinton machine - what with pay to play, getting debate questions in advance (thanks, Donna Brazile!) and total ineptitude with respect to email statements and servers, among other “attributes” - her campaign is looking sickly as we head for the Nov. 8 vote. Let us be frank: To quote the egomaniacal Trump, having Clinton as president would be a “disaster.” Having him? Questionable. The Clinton machine sinks deeper than any. Former President Richard Nixon was forced from office for the Watergate scandal. We believe that everything Clinton has done makes Watergate look like Romper Room. Is it rigged, as he suggests? Yes, we believe it is. The Democratic National Committee all but locked out Bernie Sanders, and, of course, there was the feeding of debate questions along with the Bill Clinton-Loretta Lynch “chat about grandchildren.” Please! Maybe it’s not the corruption that raises eyebrows here anymore, but how stupid the machine believes all of us are. We wouldn’t want her within 100 miles of a seat of power. These candidates are what we as a nation have given ourselves? If there is anything we like about Trump, it’s that he has brought the spineless Republican Party almost to its knees. If there’s anything we regard about Clinton, it’s that she married well.

Sadly, that is that.

A co-mission Commentary by Terry Anker A basic principal of the law is the distinction between commission and omission.

One points to those times when a person is proved to have committed an act prohibited by a particular code or rule. Alternatively, one can be held liable if they should have taken a specific action but failed to do so.

The former is fairly straight forward.

Namely, one steals from another, violating the local law, and is held to account for the transgression. The latter can be a bit more complicated. Imagine a therapist who believes that his patient may have violent tendencies. Does the doctor have an obligation to report the potential criminal to the police or should he protect her privacy?

What if the patient disclosed that she had already killed her husband and was storing him in the freezer – would the doctor be an accessory to the crime if he simply omitted disclosure? What if the patient killed again?

Should the therapist have tried to prevent

it? Must he have?

On Nov. 8, many of us will cast a ballot to select a new leader of the free world. And, we carry with us into the voting booth any number of deeply held beliefs. Some of them have been tested by close examination and others have not. Without a doubt, a few will negatively judge the choices we make. Others will sympathize.

Do we have a co-mission – to vote and to make a perfect choice? If we cannot, can we opt out? Is how we vote as important as knowing that we did? This is a year where many believe committing the act of voting for president is a near crime while a choice to omit is a high road alternative. Can we judge those who vote “wrong” more harshly than those who fail to mark a ballot at all?

As I sit contemplating a recent email, I’m reminded that my husband Doo and I are on the verge of something humor wonderful. The aforementioned message was from our medical provider, dutifully informing us that we no longer have access to our oldest’s health records, including the diagnosis and prescribed care for a broken nose he suffered yesterday on his 18th birthday (yes, the same kid who crashed his grandfather’s car on Mother’s Day, four days after receiving his driver’s license, was on the wrong end of a particularly hard and pointy elbow during a PE class basketball game. Of course, I’ve already been blamed, as I’m the mean mom who refused to call him out for first period so he could sleep in on his most special of days).

We are now officially the parents of an adult, albeit one with a now slightly crooked nose. And even though science says his brain won’t be fully developed until he’s 25, I am within my legal rights to kick him out of the house and wish him best of luck. Hallelujah! Not that we have any mind to do so, but it’s comforting to know we have the option. Am I right?

But I digress. The point is, Doo and I are fast-approaching a new phase in our lives, one without carpool duties, homework panic attacks and band fundraisers. God willing, all four of our precious little angels will be gone in less than six years. I know that parenting never gets easier, that my children will always cause me worry, but I have to admit I am totally looking forward to a Wilson empty-nest.

So in addition to a dangerous but kinda-cool crossbow gift and a hilarious “What’s-Up? Chicken Butt” card, we celebrated the bejeesus out of this milestone birthday. A cupcake breakfast, Spongebob balloons and a Benihana dinner. Throw in an emergency room visit and you have the makings of, if not a perfect day, at least a memorable one.

Happy 18th, my darling! Dad and I are thrilled HIPAA now applies to you! Peace out.

Washing my hands of it Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Last week, an Indianapolis doctor published an article in the New York Times with this startling admission: “I will humor eat food that has fallen on the kitchen floor.” Pediatrician Aaron Carroll claims a kitchen floor is not that dirty, at least compared to other germ-laden parts of the house. Putting food back on the platter after it was dropped on the floor would be dangerous to my health. My wife would kill me.

Dr. Carroll is the author of two books about medical myths, debunking fallacies like needing to drink eight glasses of water a day, the human’s inability to digest gum and that eating turkey makes you drowsy (Thanks. Now we all need a new excuse for snoring during Uncle Leo’s war stories this Thanksgiving).

Dr. Carroll’s mentor is University of Arizona microbiologist Charles Gerba, known as Dr. Germ, who attained recognition for his famous study (this is true) where he numbered sheets of toilet paper in public restrooms to determine who used more paper, men or women.

After his research was published, he was not invited to the office Christmas party. By the

way, when Dr. Gerba completed his study, he passed the research paper around the faculty lunch room. Many were skeptical of his germ theories, but they all ended up with his cold.

Both Dr. Gerba and Dr. Carroll agree that the kitchen floor is far cleaner than the arm rest on your easy chair, and still not as disgusting as your can-opener, which is almost pristine compared to your TV remote. Toilet seats are relatively germ-free, at least compared to the handle on your fridge door. If you drop half a tuna sandwich on the floor, you can eat it, but if you want to put it back in the refrigerator, use your foot to open the door. Gerba also claims the most dangerous bacteria are on the handset of an office telephone. In fact, dining off a toilet seat in the company bathroom is actually safer, germ-wise. Bon appetit.

By the way, I just heard that Kanye West might dump Kim Kardashian. I figure that after reading this column, you might enjoy a little dirt.

Cindy Crowe-Layne has a mission to assist Boone County residents struggling with addiction by showing them unaddiction conditional love, acceptance and mercy while advocating for awareness. Recently, she took another step toward that goal by releasing a 15-minute online pilot of a documentary series she hopes will turn into something more.

Crowe-Layne, owner of Zionsville’s As the Crowe Flies hair salon and founder of the nonprofit Birds Be Free, hosts and narrates the series as she travels throughout the community to see what people are doing to combat addiction. In the pilot, Crowe-Layne speaks with Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen, a Boone County Jail inmate, and Scott Mitchell, a recovery activist from Freedom Church.

“If your family member has cancer you’re going to do absolutely everything in your power to support them and lift them up,” Mitchell said during the “Birds Be Free” pilot.

“Well, same thing with these addicts. We have to do everything we can to lift them up and keep them excited about recovery.”

Crowe-Layne’s nonprofit organization, Birds Be Free, is hoping to raise $50,000 to help produce future episodes of the “Birds Be Free” series and create a full-length television series that takes the viewer on a journey down

Crowe-Layne said it will take the community working together alongside law enforcement to make an impact and lower the addiction rate in Boone County, as well as implementing more programs to assist people with recovery.

“It’s going to take all of us to do this,” Crowe-Layne said.

Crowe-Layne has started several pro-recovery initiatives through the Birds Be Free organization, including a Celebrate Recovery Bible study, a book club and a pen pal program and fundraising to help women in sobriety living facilities.

Pended sales up 6.1 percent Commentary by Jim Litten Central Indiana’s residential real estate market showed steady growth in September, according to statistics real estate compiled by F.C. Tucker Company. Compared to September 2015, overall pended sales rose 6.1 percent despite homebuyers having 2,118 fewer homes on the market from which to choose. The average sales price increased 2.5 percent to $188,145. Statistics for the 15-county region indicate 2016 pended home sales are on track to exceed last year’s results.

Boone County’s pended sales jumped 17.9 percent in September 2016 compared to September 2015. Prices have also increased by 7.5 percent over last year to an average of $291,625. The number of available homes for sale continues to decline in the region; inventory in Boone County slid 14.6 percent, a drop of 63 homes available compared to this time last year.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sales price increased 9.2 percent to $404,611 – the highest average for the 15-county region.

• Inventory moved at a much slower pace in Zionsville in September 2016. Overall, homes sold in 90 days – 40 more days

than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had roughly the same number of homes available to them. Last month, 194 homes were available for sale – just two more homes compared to September 2015.

• Pended home sales increased in Zionsville. In September 2016, 30 homes sold – an increase of two homes compared to September 2015.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, one was priced $1,000,000 to $1,999,999; 6 were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 14 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; five were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and four were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

Despite the drop in homes for sale, home buyers are snatching up available homes rather quickly. Low mortgage rates and appropriately priced homes should keep positive momentum in home buying through the end of 2016.

ZCHS presents classic ‘Oklahoma’

“Oklahoma,” the Rogers and theater Hammerstein musical that premiered on Broadway in 1943, will be performed at Zionsville High School from Nov. 17 to 19 for four performances.

The musical follows two love triangles set in the early 1900s in Oklahoma Territory.

“Even though we have conflicts,” said senior Claire Eugenio, who plays innocent farm girl Laurey, “love conquers everything, and at the end of the day that’s what helps us coexist peacefully.”

Director Mikayla Koharchik said the show follows the characters as they realize their dreams.

“Dreams aren’t necessarily what you have, but it’s the people around you that make it a possibility,” she said.

Koharchik, who directed school productions of “Footloose” and “Pippin” the last two years, likes students to explore different musical genres.

To ensure the theme in the traditional musical is still relevant for today’s audience, Koharchik has made some slight adaptations.

“One of the things we’re doing is giving Laurey a more independent character so she’s not a typical ingénue,” she said.

The musical is still appropriate for all ages.

“The way it was created was as a family production, and it’s a classic,” Eugenio said.

“I think that people know the story,” said junior Weston LeCrone, who plays cowboy Will Parker. “And people don’t know the deeper meaning behind (the characters).”

Other than the directorial staff, the production is run entirely by roughly 80 students.

Dancer to appear in ICB event

“When I dance I feel a freedom event and I feel I can express myself without using words,” Danek said.

Danek, 13, will perform at the Indianapolis City Ballet’s eighth annual Evening with the Stars at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Murat Theatre at the Old National Centre.

Dankek, a homeschooled eighth grader from Carmel, has been dancing for nine years and has been a member of Ballet Theatre of Carmel for more than six years.

“I’m so thankful for Indianapolis City Ballet for giving me this opportunity,” Danek said.

“I’m so excited to dance in front of a large audience and to meet all the dancers I’ve looked up to.”

Evening with the Stars features artists from ballet companies from around the world, including Tiler Peck, Robert Fairchild, Iana Salenko, Daniil Simkin, Sofiane Sylve and Ron “Prime Tyme” Miles. Rising stars Gisele Bethea and Aran Bell will perform a premiere by Cherylyn Lavagnino.

Tailgating in the late fall has its temperature challenges. Sometimes we tailgate in the cold morning and then sit in the stadium in the hot sun. Sometimes we tailgate in the afternoon sun and experience a fall in the temperature as the game proceeds into the night. So the question is, “How should we dress for the weather?”

The use of layers is the best strategy. One should have a base clothing layer to regulate body temperature and move moisture away from his or her skin to a second layer, where it spreads along a larger surface area where it can dry more effectively.

For warming nutrition, try this great recipe: Very Simple Tailgate Turkey Chili 5 ways This chili avoids a little of the fat of ground beef without losing any of the flavor we require for pre-game and post-game meals.

You’ll find that the whole tomatoes are very soothing to your throat on a cold day.

Ingredients: 2 lbs. ground turkey, 1 lb. spaghetti, 3 pkgs. McCormick’s Chili Mix (or your favorite), 3 28 oz. cans whole peeled tomatoes (un-drained), 4 15 oz. cans dark red kidney beans (un-drained), Olive Oil. Preparation: The night before, cook pasta according to package directions, then drain and set it aside. Brown the turkey in a large pot with some olive oil. Then add everything else to the pot. Bring the mixture to a low boil and then reduce the heat to allow the chili to simmer for one hour. Stir the mixture occasionally. Allow the chili to cool on your deck or balcony. Then refrigerate overnight. Put pasta

On game day heat the pot of chili to a boil, then remove from heat and place the pot onto a pad in your Coleman powerchill thermoelectric cooler to keep it hot on your trip to the game. You can also add the paper cups of pasta to this heated cooler. Or you can place the chili in a room temperature cooler surrounded with insulating towels and use your grill to heat it at the game. You can heat water at the game or from a thermos and pour it through the cups of pasta before you add them to your individual chili bowls. Serve chili over the spaghetti and add onions and cheese.

The goal was to create low maintenance outdoor living spaces for both entertaining and every day life.

1. The deck footprint was expanded to allow for seating, making this a place for the family to gather and entertain. The Trex composite deck and railing material requires little maintenance to keep it looking new.

2. The staircase was expanded and relocated to allow for more space to dedicate to the grill. The grill now sits in its own alcove with a stainless steel prep shelf.

3. LED deck lights were added down the stairway leading to their existing outdoor fireplace to make evening entertaining easier.

4. Their screened-in porch was transformed into a three-season room with the addition of a new EZE breeze window system. These vinyl glazed panes have the transparency of glass without the cost or weight. When closed they can seal the room to allow for more everyday comforts like baseboard heating and more substantial furniture.

Before Background Info: This 2005-built home in the Dean Road area in Indianapolis was in need of an upgrade to their outdoor living spaces. The homeowners needed a better space to enjoy their lush back yard and pool area.

Before problems: The original deck was stained cedar decking that required a significant amount of maintenance each year. These active homeowners needed an improved outdoor living solution with easy upkeep. Their sunroom was in need of updates to transition it into a three-season room.

Passau: Swords and records Commentary by Don Knebel Passau, Germany, prides itself on a record many would think beyond the reach of a city of 50,000. It recently posted travel another record for which its residents were not so happy.

From 999 to 1803, Passau was ruled by a prince-bishop, a bishop with secular powers. Veste Oberhaus, the bishop’s imposing fortress, still overlooks the city from a small mountain across the Danube. A large red wolf from the bishop’s coat of arms adorns the building’s exterior. The wolf once identified swords forged in Passau, which were revered because users thought the wolf gave them divine protection One of Passau’s main attractions today is the St. Stephen’s Cathedral, whose twin towers can be seen throughout the city. The cathedral was erected in the Baroque style between 1668 and 1693 after an earlier cathedral was destroyed in a fire. St. Stephen’s pipe organ has grown over the years until it now has 17,774 pipes and 233 registers. The

organ was the largest in the world until 1994, when it was outdone by a church organ in Los Angeles and had to settle for being the largest outside the United States. The sound of this massive organ can be drowned out by eight large bells hanging in the towers’ bell rooms The largest, cast in 1952, weighs more than eight tons.

Passau is sometimes called the City of Three Rivers because it lies at the intersection of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. About once every five years, one of the rivers floods.

In 2013, persistent rains caused the Danube to reach levels several feet above the tops of doors in the city center. The outside wall of an old building marks the crests of 10 major floods since 1501. The 2013 waters reached a level not seen in 500 years.
