Firefighters provide help, hope in Puerto Rico

Division Chief hurricane maria Mark Hart saw devastation caused by Hurricane Maria during a 16-day deployment beginning in late September to assist in rescue efforts in Puerto Rico.

“There wasn’t a part of the island that wasn’t completely untouched by the hurricane. It definitely hit every bit of it,” Westrich said. “Every leaf was ripped off every tree. It had a barren look instead of the tropical look.”

Westrich and Hart were among a 27-member team recently deployed with Indiana USAR Task Force 1. Team members spent 12 days on the island assisting with relief efforts by completing targeted searches and relaying information between emergency responders, officials, hospitals and FEMA. “We were the initial push in finding out what was the damage,” Hart said.

The team served as the main communication point between the affected communities and FEMA. With the power grid down, Westrich said there was no easy way for community members to seek assistance, so the team was a welcome sight. The residents were in desperate need of food, fuel and water, he said.

“They were happy to see us, because they hadn’t been in contact with anybody,”

The team members covered more than 7,000 miles during the trip. They loaded ready-to-eat meals and water bottles into Jeep Wranglers and distributed them to children and those in need.

“There wasn’t a spot on the island we didn’t see,” Westrich said.

During one of their missions, the team did a search and welfare check on a Korean War veteran and his wife. After finding the couple by using GPS coordinates, the team members learned that the couple was low on food so they left a few MREs on their table.

“We turned around and he had tears running down his face,” Hart said.

“It’s just helping people,” Hart said. “It’s what firefighters do.”

Hart said one of the most amazing things he saw during his trip was how the residents banded together to begin fixing their own communities by clearing streets and moving trees.

Westrich, a FEMA USAR specialist with Indiana Task Force 1, has previously been deployed for relief efforts during Hurricane Gustav in 2008, Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the Henryville tornado. Hart has been with the Indiana Task Force 1 for the past 17 years and has previously been deployed for relief efforts during Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Gustav in 2008 and the Henryville tornado.

DOR crafting plan to refund food & beverage taxes

As the Indiana Dept. of Revenue and Zionsville and Whitestown officials continue to untangle a way for diners town news to receive refunds for taxes that shouldn’t have been charged, some taxpayers are wondering if it will be worth the effort.

DOR reported in October that Zionsville received nearly $300,000 in food and beverage taxes collected at several Whitestown restaurants since 2008. Because Whitestown doesn’t have a food and beverage tax, diners at affected restaurants paid 1 percent that they never should have been charged.

DOR sent cease-and-desist letters to all of the affected restaurants and as of Nov. 1 had received written confirmation from all but two — El Rodeo and Thai Select — that the tax no longer is being charged.

“They were able to verbally communicate to DOR their plans to implement the cease-

and-desist,” said Emily Landis, DOR director of external communications. “Both organizations are working through internal issues in order to address DOR’s request.”

When reached by phone, an employee at Thai Select said the restaurant had resolved the problem, and a manager at El Rodeo was not immediately available for comment.

DOR is working on a plan to allow taxpayers to receive refunds by completing a form and providing a receipt or bank statement.

Those affected will have at least 90 days to show proof of purchase, although a specific time period has not yet been set.

Lifelong Zionsville resident Gina Snodgrass said she dines once or twice a month at restaurants that had been charging the tax.

She said she didn’t keep any of her receipts and isn’t likely to search through bank statements to identify the charges.

“Providing proof of purchase seems like an absolute nightmare for any and all involved,” Snodgrass said. “I do not believe I would go through the hassle. It would be too insignifi-

cant of an amount.”

Landis said DOR has no way of accurately estimating how much money will be refunded. But she said the Town of Zionsville has committed to paying back the amount requested in taxpayer refunds.

“The difference from the refund amount and what was already appropriated to Zionsville as a result of collecting this tax is part of ‘phase two,’ requiring DOR to work with both community leaders to come to an agreement that is not detrimental to either party involved,” Landis said.

Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said that during his most recent meeting with DOR a plan was discussed to divert any leftover funds to the state’s general fund.

He expects that a good bit of the tax money won’t be refunded, in part because many of the taxpayers live in other states.

“It’s going to be very difficult to find all of the taxpayers,” he said. “Is there an easy way to do this? No.”

ZCHS peaks to win title

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Community High School girls cross country team needed time to jell. cross country “We knew they were good, but it was never like this is the year we were going to do it,” ZCHS coach Suzanne Rigg said. “As the season progressed, we were more hopeful. We won conference, and our (Hoosier Crossroads) conference is really strong, and that gave us a lot of inspiration heading into the tournament. It’s a combination of a lot of things that went our way, and we’re really thankful and fortunate.”

The third-ranked Eagles captured the Indiana High School Athletic Association cross country state championship with 118 points Oct. 28 in Terre Haute. Top-ranked Fort Wayne Carroll was second with 129, and No. 4 Carmel, which had won seven consecutive state titles, was third with 169. Third-ranked Brebeuf Jesuit was fourth with 196.

It was the first cross country team title for Zionsville in either the girls or boys division. The Zionsville girls team’s best previous team finish was fourth in 2016.

“We were fortunate to have the depth, and our four and five runners really came through for us, especially at the state meet,” Rigg said. “We were fortunate everyone was healthy. We had a really strong team.”

Rigg’s daughter Sophia, a senior, placed fourth among runners with teams in the meet and seventh overall. Sophomore Katelyn Wasson was seventh among runners with teams and 10th overall. Sophia agreed with her mother that the team didn’t resemble a state championship team at the start of the season.

“As the season progressed, everyone got better and our team energy improved,” Sophia said. “It was a big shock winning state. We knew we had a chance, but I don’t think in our wildest dreams we really thought we could win. It was really exciting to win. Everyone was crying.”

Sophia made a verbal commitment to compete for North Carolina State the night before the state meet. Her brother, Oliver, a 2016 ZCHS graduate, is on the University of Alabama cross country team.

The Eagles won the sectional, regional and finished second to Brebeuf Jesuit at semistate.

“You don’t want to run your best race at semistate and then run out of gas at state,” Rigg said. “But our semistate is tough. It’s a really tricky balance getting them there.”

Gavin is certainly glad she returned for her final go-around.

The senior goalkeeper, in her first varsity season, helped the No. 4 Golden Eagles reach the Class 3A state championship match before falling to No. 1 Penn 2-0 Oct. 27 at the Butler University campus in Indianapolis. Guerin had 15 shutouts, including 11 in a row, before the streak ended with a 4-1 victory over Columbus North in the semistate. This was the first year for three classes in soccer. Penn won the Class 2A title in 2016 and was runner-up in 2015.

“We were super-excited to play such a great team, and we were ready for the challenge,” said Gavin, who will play for Marian University next season.

Head coach Jonathan McClure said Penn’s experience provided an obvious edge.

“Penn’s resume over the past three seasons is very impressive,” McClure said.

“Though we graduate 10 players, we had a great deal of our underclassmen as a part of this tournament run. We feel we are on course for building a similar resume of our own.”

McClure said excellent leadership was the key to the 16-2-1 record for the team.

McClure, who was Guerin's coach from 2008 to 2013, returned as the Golden Eagles head coach before the 2016 season. Only four girls had varsity experience prior to the 2016 season.

“We believe that if you create welcoming environments, love people really well and remove barriers that keep people from Jesus, lots of people will be drawn to that,” TPCC lead pastor Aaron Brockett said.

“I think that’s what we’re seeing happen, even though we do this imperfectly.”

It may be imperfect, but it’s working.

According to Outreach Magazine, Traders Point Christian Church was the fifth fastest-growing church in America in 2016.

In the last two years, the church has expanded from one main campus in Whitestown to three additional locations: Carmel, downtown Indianapolis and Avon. This multi-site approach enables smaller satellite churches around town to physically meet people where they are — in their own neighborhoods.

Many members who have witnessed the growth first-hand attribute it to the church environment.

In February, Traders Point North in Carmel opened its doors at 1242 W. 136th St. with Sunday morning services at 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m.

“I’m not surprised at all,” Carmel resident Diana Holstein said. “You feel welcome and embraced here and there don’t seem to be cliques. There’s always an empty chair for someone new.”

Brockett and the other leaders are humbled by the church’s success.

“The growth that our church has experienced over the past few years is as much a surprise to me as anybody. I can’t take any credit for it,” Brockett said. “Jesus said it best in John 12 when he said, ‘If you lift up my name, I will draw all people to myself.’”

Teacher strives to bring Ethiopian teen to TPCA for education

By Desiree Williams • news@currentzionsville.com When Lisa Price Kuhn traveled to an Ethiopian orphanage on a mission trip in 2013, she had no idea how much it would change her life.

Kuhn was astonished by the groups cover story of children who had so much hope despite having so little.

“What struck me with all of these kids I met was their brightness and their happiness,” Kuhn said. “They were smiling and so happy to see you, and they had so little.

They didn’t have family. They didn’t have a home, and they were so full of joy.”

After a tragic fatal automobile accident, Kuhn the orphanage had stopped transporting the children to the city for schooling and decided to have them stay in the village. Kuhn, a teacher, said this set the children back in their education, so she decided to help one of the teens whose plans to take college exams the following year were derailed.

Behaylu was 14 years old when Kuhn met him. He didn’t have parents who could care for him, and his brothers were unable to provide support. Kuhn said Behaylu tugged at her heart, and they developed a special friendship.

Now, Kuhn is working to bring Behaylu to the U.S. to get an education at Traders Point Christian Academy in Whitestown. The school is ready for him, but he has not yet received the proper approvals to leave his home nation. But Kuhn — like the children in the orphanage — isn’t giving up hope.

“From the day I met him, I decided I was going to do what I could to bring him here for an education and for family,” Kuhn said.

Gathering support

Kuhn teaches fifth-grade, high-ability students at Towne Meadow Elementary in Carmel. She instills in her students the importance of making a difference, and she wanted to put that lesson into action by helping Behaylu.

To start the process, Kuhn needed to find a school that offered an international program and issued F-1 student visa applications. She selected TPCA in Whitestown and began working with Toni Kanzler, the director of high school admissions and international programs.

The admissions process consisted of Kanzler filling out an online application, gathering academic records and participating in a Skype interview.

“We want to get to know the student and learn a little

Kuhn also needed to raise money for the visa application fee and visits to the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia. Kuhn said it takes a village to get everything scheduled and prepared for Behaylu.

A ticking clock

Behaylu has visited the embassy and been denied three times, so he still is in Ethiopia awaiting approval to come to the U.S. Kuhn said it is a typical response, but she is starting to worry because he turned 18 in September and the orphanage will only be able to house him for a little longer.

“Traders Point has already started, so we want to get him here as quickly as possible. The day that he is accepted, we will be on the phones getting him a plane,” Kuhn said.

Kuhn said she reached out to Sen. Todd Young’s office for help, and his staff sent a letter to the Ethiopian consulate to encourage them to give his application a full and fair review.

The notion of a zombie apocalypse has become common parlance to indicate the end of the world. Dozens of television series, movies, songs and even band names are dedicated to the dystopian notion that the human race will end not with seven horsemen or a nuclear-enabled eastern dictator but, instead, with a virus gone awry.

Generations of us have come of age in a time when disease and contagion rank among our utmost fears. AIDS, Ebola, flesh eating bacteria and Zika are part of our common lexicon – and are the vague anxiety producers in our lives. Are they going to affect us directly? If we care for ourselves carefully, they probably will not. But they may change our dating, travel or outdoor habits for good. We dread that a single, casual social interaction could lead to an irreversible life-changing, or life-ending, instance.

So, we’ve figured out that the world is dangerous. But didn’t we know this when Og first bumped into a saber-toothed tiger and didn’t make it back to the cave? Most humans understand that a bit of caution can lead to an extended lifespan. So, we have come to hide out in the cave. Our social interactions move in bits and bytes through smartphones and social networks.

We meet in cyber chat rooms and travel through virtual reality tanning beds. Yet, are there zombies lurking on Facebook? Do the brain-eaters lie in wait behind a silly, cat-themed meme? Can they grab us with clever or salacious headlines, infect our minds with hate and cause us to do the same to others? If, as some argue, there is a disease affecting our society – one that makes us blind to the perspectives and beliefs of others – is there any hope for inoculation?

The other day I heard myself saying, “Parenting never ends,” and in the same moment, thinking, but it sure gets humor a lot easier! A coworker was regaling me with the woes of potty-training his 2-year-old while I was sharing a logistical nightmare of having to simultaneously pick up my teenagers at three different locales. Winner of the award for Most Challenging Parenting Task? The toddler! Hands-down.

Doo and I have certainly come a long way. At our darkest hour, we had four children younger than 7 and were providing full-time day care for our infant nephew. I say “we” to sound democratic, but in reality it was just I. God bless the YMCA, which provided two hours of free child-watching, hot showers and an exceptionally clean facility where harried moms like myself could congregate and pretend to look cool while attempting Turbo Kick.

I do not miss those days. To be sure, parenting still is daunting. I often lie awake wondering if we’ll end up dealing with a teen pregnancy or a stint in rehab. What if the twins don’t pass their driving tests (gulp)? What if they do? But I’m able to compartmentalize the concerns and then soothe my heartburn with an episode of “Stranger Things.”

But when your children are little, there is no escape from reality. You can’t just run to your happy place when you’re stuck in traffic with an un-diapered kid screaming “pee pee is coming!” At that point, parenting is about survival. And you must be fully, exhaustingly, present. Always.

So maybe parenting doesn’t actually get any easier, but it certainly becomes more manageable. And much less gross. Peace out.

What is a four-alarm fire?

Commentary by Anna Skinner Ever wonder what makes a four-alarm fire a four-alarm fire? Yeah, me neither.

Until fire trucks rolled plain talk by the other day and a friend wondered if it was a four-alarm fire and then asked, “What does that mean?”

Folks learned a long time ago the best way to send me into the dusty and forgotten reference stacks at the library is to ask a question that starts out, “What does that mean?” In this case I cheated and went directly to Google.

The number of alarms assigned to a fire depends on how many firefighters are dispatched. It’s a system that got started in one city (no one seems to remember which) and then spread.

For example, a one-alarm fire, also called a box alarm, calls for 20 firefighters in five sets of four firefighters. A twoalarm blaze calls for 40 firefighters plus four command staff. A three-alarmer calls for 60 and six commanders. A four-alarm calls for 80 and eight, and so on.

Multiple alarms doesn’t mean multiple fire houses. It just means more firefighters and equipment are sent to the fire.

Apparently, the system works this way: A fire call comes in and the chief

sends out the first crew. So far, it’s a one-alarm fire. The call comes for more help and the chief sends out another crew. Now, it’s a two-alarm fire. You get the picture. The most recent 10-alarm fire was last May in Brooklyn when an apartment building was ablaze.

Back in the 1800s, cities had watch towers, and if a fire broke out, the attendant rang a bell. Firefighters would then emerge from their houses and check the sky for smoke to determine where the fire was.

The telephone and fire alarm boxes updated all that, of course, so now it’s just a matter of determining how many alarms it takes to quench the flames.

To be clear, this has nothing to do with Two-Alarm Chili. This was the creation of newspaper reporter Wick Fowler, who invented a spicy chili mix that won the international chili cook-off a few years ago.

I accidentally tasted that stuff once at a local street festival. I almost called the fire department.

My favorite veggie tale Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Following my knee operation, my doctor informed me I’d developed borderline anemia. I don’t even know how humor that’s possible. Since the new administration took over, I’m afraid to cross any borders.

My physician suggested I focus on a healthy, high-protein diet, heavy on foods like spinach, hearty cuts of beef and a bowl of Raisin Bran every day. Fortunately, these are already some of my food faves—including the spinach, which I even liked when I was a kid. I remember being skeptical of the television marketing for that vegetable, though. They tried to convince me that eating spinach would help me attract the opposite sex. I was not in the market for anyone who looked like Olive Oyl. When I was growing up, my grandmother always stressed that carrots were good for our eyes, and her proof was that we never saw dead rabbits on the road. But opossum corpses were strewn everywhere.

“Opossums hate carrots,” my grandmother informed me. That was a pretty good piece of propaganda! I still like carrots and have never been hit by a car. Thanks, Grandma.

Cauliflower: I hated cauliflower. It looked like somebody’s bleached brain. Nowadays, I don’t see cauliflower being served as a side dish much. It’s usually part of a medley.

Broccoli: Apparently, I ate a lot of broccoli when I was young but didn’t know it till I was 18. I knew there was something hidden under that wonderful cheesey sauce, but I was afraid to look until I graduated from high school.

Peas: We never had fresh peas at home.

Just canned. I’m not sure anyone in my family knew that peas came from a pod.

They looked like ammunition from my BB gun, and there was no way I could get them on my fork. The best technique to tackle the issue was to roll up the peas in my mashed potatoes.

An Indianapolis-based funeral home will complete its expansion into Zionsville by the end of November. new biz Simplicity Funeral Home, with locations in Franklin and southern Indianapolis, is a low-cost offshoot of Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Homes.

Company President Paul St. Pierre said the company had been looking for a Zionsville location for two years after serving families in the area for some time.

The funeral home will occupy the building at 125 W. Sycamore St. that was once Stacy LaBolts clothing store but hasn’t had a long-term tenant for the last decade.

“We like being in the heart of the village,” St. Pierre said. “We feel it’s really where Zionsville comes to life.”

During the last several months the interior of the building has been renovated with half of the footprint serving as a gathering room for memorials. An arrangement room and bathrooms also were renovated.

The American Cancer Society held its Bark for Life event Oct. 28 in Zionsville. Participants brought their furry friends to walk the trail at Creekside Corporate Park to raise funds and awareness for ACS programs and its fight against cancer.

Post-workout stretching relieves tension, allowing the muscles to relax. Because the body is already warm from exercise, stretching after physical activity also lengthens muscle tissue.

Follow these tips: • Concentrate on large muscle groups, which benefit the most from stretching. Target shoulders and neck, legs, hips and the lower back.

• Be sure to stretch evenly on both sides.

• Avoid bouncing while stretching. This can lead to injuries.

• Keep breathing while you stretch, exhaling as you move into the stretch.

• Don’t over-stretch. To improve flexibility, you must stretch and hold a muscle beyond its normal point; however, be sure to stop stretching if you feel pain.

Stretch muscles to a comfortable point and hold for 15 to 30 seconds.

ATI to launch Theatre Immersion Experience

To the casual observer, the stars of any stage production are, well, the stars.

But to the trained eye, the production stars are never on stage. They are, in fact, completely out of sight — a point Carmel’s Actors Theatre of Indiana wants to drive home with an innovative program designed for teens who are interested in theater careers.

In January, ATI will launch “Theatre Immersion Experience 2018,” a series of job-shadowing workshops that encompass all facets of production, from stage management to directing to set, lighting and costume design.

Open to ages 14 to 18, each “immersion” consists of 12 students who follow an ATI main stage production literally from start to finish -- all under the leadership of ATI’s director of education MaryJayne Waddell, an accomplished professional with 37 years of stage experience. “(Students will) have direct access to the directors, the actors, the designers,” said WadWaddell dell, who joined ATI in August. “They’re going to see the first day of rehearsal. They’re going to see the technical rehearsal. They’ll see final dress. They’ll shadow backstage crew and the stage manager. They’ll be there opening night and the opening night party.”

In short, they’ll get a big picture, nuanced look at a major production, the goal of which is to help aspiring professionals find their theater niche. For some, that might be performing on stage. For others, it might be doing the essential work off it.

Immersions are designed to be illuminating, enlightning and career-guiding.

takes to bring a show to life and really help them appreciate all of the different departments that go into producing the stage show,” said Waddell, who has performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway, cruise ships, national tours and has appeared in TV and feature films. “We really do want to take the kids to the next level.”

Because of the focus on job shadowing and close interaction, each immersion program is limited to 12 students. In addition to following an ATI production, each experience includes 40 hours of customized instruction from Broadway and theater professionals.

“The real goal of this immersion is to help them to appreciate and actually teach them life skills on how to work together to recognize that everyone has talent, whether it’s on stage or behind the scenes,” Waddell said. “It’s not just on stage. There are lots of jobs behind the scenes.This is for kids that are really serious and curious and ready to grow.”

1. The most significant transformation came from reducing the height of the portico and creating a one-story covered porch, replacing the colonial-style pillars with something more contemporary.

2. Reducing the height of the portico allowed for the addition of three dormer windows, giving the home more height.

3. In the backyard we added a one-story covered patio with a ceiling fan, creating a shaded area for the family and their guests to stay cool on hot summer days.

4. Additional exterior changes included a stamped concrete pool deck, new windows and shutters and painting of the entire home.

Most Americans have never heard of the Eblaite Empire. But historians now believe that empire rivaled in power and achievement the contemporatravel neous empires of Egypt and Mesopotamia.

In 1964, a team of Italian archaeologists began excavating an artificial hill called Tell Mardikh about 33 miles southwest of Aleppo, Syria. In 1968, they confirmed they had located the city of Ebla, with a hilltop palace overlooking 150 acres of buildings and temples. In 1975, archaeologists uncovered more than 17,000 clay tablets near the palace, neatly arranged by subject. The tablets recorded in cuneiform script the history of Ebla at the peak of its power in the middle of the third millennium B.C., the same period in which Egyptians built the Great Pyramids. The records, written in Sumerian and a previously unknown language now called Eblaite, described a highly organized city of about 40,000 that controlled an empire occupying most of what is now Syria and parts of southern Turkey.

Ebla’s tablets revealed ideas once thought to have a much more recent origin. Citizens elected the ruler for a term of seven years, with a council of elders advising the ruler.

Women held positions of power in the government, which included 14 ministers, two serving in the city itself, and the others serving around the empire. The wife of the elected ruler controlled linen and woolen cloth making, which joined olive oil, beer and manufactured goods, as the key exports.

According to the accounting records, women and men earned equal wages.

Ebla was severely damaged by warfare in 2240 B.C., which helped preserve the tablets. It then began a period of gradual decline that ended with its total destruction in about 1600 B.C., after which Ebla and its empire were forgotten. During Syria’s civil war, soldiers have used Ebla’s hill as a lookout.

The Temple of Whom Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Today I want to tackle another tricky grammar bugaboo. It’s one of those confusing quandaries I grammar guy simply avoid using because I don’t want to sound dumb. I’m talking about who and whom.

Every time I’m tempted to use whom, I’m afraid of sounding like I own a fancy, private helicopter to travel to my private island where I roll around in gold coins, Scrooge McDuck-style. It just kind of sounds snooty. So let’s learn how to use it correctly, shall we?

I have an easy way to remember when to use who or whom: Use who when you can replace it in a sentence with he; use whom when you can replace it in a sentence with him. For example: Who/Whom tried to parachute out of my private helicopter? Bad idea, dude.

Let’s try replacing who/whom with him.

Him tried to parachute out of my private helicopter. That doesn’t sound right. How about he: He tried to parachute out of my private helicopter. That sounds better, so we should use who in this sentence.

Another example: To who/whom did you invite over to your secret island bungalow this weekend? Which sounds right: I invited he over to my secret island bungalow this weekend, or, I invited him to my secret island bungalow this weekend. Him sounds better, so we should use whom in this example.

He/him is simply a secret, tricky way to determine the subject and object of a sentence. The subject is the person (or place or thing) doing the action in a sentence. The object is the person (or place or thing) on the receiving end of the action. To whom (object) did Gary (subject) direct his cheesy pick-up lines? Since we usually don’t think in terms of subject and object, I think it’s simpler to use the he/him trick.

In my opinion, going around using whom properly probably makes people assume you have an entire closet just for your polo ascots, but I always enjoy a rollicking, post-brunch polo match on the beach of my exclusive pretend island.
