Investigation ongoing in Quail Run shooting

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com A man was injured in a shooting Oct. 29 shortly after 10 p.m. in the 1300 block of Quail Run Apartments, just south of CRIME Zionsville Community High School on Ford Road.

The victim, 33-year-old Isaac Bermudez, was shot in the head and transported to St. Vincent Hospital. He gave a brief description of the suspect before medics took him away from the scene.

Police established a multi-jurisdictional perimeter, utilizing resources from several Boone County and state agencies. After searching the area until approximately 2 a.m., Boone County Sheriff’s Office officials said they exhausted all leads and believe the suspect left the area. The investigation is ongoing.

“We had a lot of resources in play,” Zionsville Chief of Police Robert Knox said. “We had a state police helicopter, dogs, drones and more. Unfortunately, we did not get the conclusion we wanted and did not find who pulled the trigger.”

“We do not know a motive,” Knox said. “We are operating on different theories at this point in time.”

Bermudez, a general manager for Greek’s Pizzeria, said in a Facebook message to Current that he feels extremely lucky and happy to be alive.

“I’d like to thank God, the amazing staff at the trauma center here at St. Vincent, along with ZPD for their efforts and services, and my friends and family at Greek’s Pizzeria for all the love and support,” Bermudez said.

In May 2017, a fatal shooting occurred in the parking lot of Quail Run Apartments. Knox said it is odd that two of Zionsville’s recent shootings happened on the same street.

“It’s a very strange coincidence, but we are not seeing a connection between the two,” Knox said. “Unfortunately, in the last three or four years we’ve had more than our fair share of these things.”

Zionsville had been without a murder since 1997, but in 2016 there were three. Since then, additional murders have occurred, including a double murder-suicide last month and the 2017 Quail Run murder. Knox said he takes crime in Zionsville personally but thinks Zionsville has done a good job mitigating crime.

“In any community, you’re going to have this kind of nonsense,” Knox said. “It’s unacceptable, but how do you address it? You do what you can, you investigate the best way you possibly can and use all the resources at your disposal. You hope and pray that these people who have ill intent see the error of their ways before they go out and do something else.”

Members of the community are encouraged to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.

“I don’t want this in any community, especially ours,” Knox said. “If you see something, say something.”

Cookie Café comes to the village

Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Kim Estep, owner of Kim’s Cookie Café, said the power of suggestion and positive thought helped her open ZionsFOOD ville’s first cookie café, along with hard work and dedication to the craft.

“I started saying I just want to have a store in town,” Estep said.

Soon, people stepped up to help her find a location, paint the building and donate equipment.

“One thing led to another,” she said.

“Nice people have helped me. It’s been very humbling.”

Estep has made custom cookie orders in her home for the past five years and wanted to eventually open a shop, which opens Nov. 10 at 70 East Hawthorne St. It will be open seven days a week.

Estep’s pre-packaged decorated cookies will be available but she also will have bouquets of cookies, mugs filled with cookies and pasteurized, edible cookie dough.

“It’s kind of a craze,” she said. “You can take smaller bites and enjoy it a little bit.”

After watching an instructional video on YouTube five years ago, she learned how to decorate cookies for a church bazaar. Her package of cookies sold immediately.

Alzheimer’s disease: myths and facts big difference in the effectiveness of these drugs.

This November, countless Americans are calling for awareness and collecting donations on behalf of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. While nearly 5.5 million people are currently living with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in the United States — meaning the disease affects approximately one in two families directly — many misconceptions about Alzheimer’s prevail. These are the most common myths and their corresponding facts:

MYTH: If one of your parents gets Alzheimer’s, so will you.

FACT: Less than five percent of all cases of Alzheimer’s are cases of familial Alzheimer’s disease.

MYTH: Alzheimer’s is a normal part of aging.

FACT: A small amount of memory loss is common as we age, but dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are certainly not. To understand the difference, compare misplacing your keys to forgetting where you live. Being forgetful is inconvenient, but Alzheimer’s disease eventually debilitates every aspect of day-to-day living.

MYTH: Alzheimer’s isn’t deadly.

FACT: Alzheimer’s typically progresses over a 14-year period and always results in a brain so weakened that life-sustaining systems in the body ultimately fail. It’s a fatal brain disease with no known cure.

MYTH: Only old people get Alzheimer’s.

FACT: While the majority of individuals with the disease experience symptoms only after the age of 65, early-onset Alzheimer’s affects about five percent of all Alzheimer’s patients. These people experience symptoms in their 50s, 40s or even 30s.

MYTH: There are treatments that slow or stop Alzheimer’s from progressing.

FACT: To date, there are no treatments that can stop or slow the gradual onslaught of Alzheimer’s disease.

However, there are medications that can help manage symptoms. Early diagnosis can make a

“I wanted to have the bricks dedicated and in place in our Veterans Garden before Veterans Day so residents could visit the garden on the weekend leading up to Veterans Day,” said Ron May, chaplain at Hoosier Village Retirement Center. “Having the ceremony on Nov. 7 also ensures we don’t conflict with other scheduled veterans day events in the community that our veterans may wish to attend.”

The garden was dedicated in May 2017 with 124 bricks. Since then, Hoosier Village has added bricks twice a year to honor new resident veterans near Veterans Day and Memorial Day. The new batch will raise the brick count to 200. The garden has room for 400 bricks.

Zionsville builder Beazer Homes hosted a neighborhood block party and ribbon-cutting ceremony HOMES Oct. 27 in front of the future site of its Hampshire community amenity area. Amenities will include a pool, pool house, tennis court, playground and pickleball court.

The Beazer homes are being developed in tandem with Fischer homes in the Hampshire development, near the intersection of Whitestown Road and 800 E. The block party also featured prize drawings, gift bags and activities for kids. Food was provided by Mad Max Smokehouse food truck and the Indiana on Tap truck served beer from Moontown Brewing Company.

More than 120 volunteers met at the Boone County Fairgrounds Sept. 29 for the Habitat for Humanity Boone HOMES County Neighborhood Home Repair Program. They were divided into small work groups and assigned to six repair projects in Lebanon, Whitestown and the new ReStore in Zionsville.

The new initiative aims to help homeowners in Boone County with exterior repairs such as painting, yard clean-up and basic building projects.

“This new program will follow the HFHBC model for home ownership, which requires both a need and some sweat equity and a modest cost based on income, in which we will use a sliding scale,” HFHBC Program Director Glen Jourdan said. “We are excited to be able to offer more community engagement opportunities with this program.”

There were probably 100 people or more huddled together along the security fence.

We were out on the tarPLAIN TALK mac at the airport trying to stay warm in the 40-degree temperature and 30 mph wind.

It was a mixed crowd. There were veterans from the Korean war, Vietnam and more recent conflicts. There were young mothers with children in tow and dads who had taken time off from work. They came from Richmond, Evansville, Valparaiso, Carmel, Indianapolis, Zionsville and other Hoosier communities.

Most of us had been standing in one line or another for two hours or more, waiting for Air Force One to land. We hoped to see the president and maybe shake his hand before his motorcade whisked him downtown, where he was scheduled to address the Future Farmers of America.

The plane landed on schedule and came to a stop a few yards from where we waited. White House staff and members of the press exited the rear door while the ramp was shuttled into place at the front exit.

Moments later, the president stepped out

and waved to the cheering crowd.

Sadly, while the president was in the air a madman walked into a synagogue in Pennsylvania and started killing people. As a result, the president needed to talk with reporters after landing in Indianapolis. His tight schedule left no time to chat with the crowd or shake our hands. Before getting into his limousine, however, he stood for a long moment and greeted us with an apologetic wave and a smile.

Were we disappointed that we didn’t get to shake hands with the president? Maybe a little. But I doubt any of us actually expected a one-on-one with the man.

That really wasn’t why we were there. I think most of us came out to the airport and waited in the cold for Air Force One to land because we recognized that the job of the president of the U.S. is often a lonely one. And it’s nice to get a friendly wave from a group of strangers now and then.

An Ohio nonprofit has expanded to Indiana to help children with life-threatening illnesses feel like PHILANTHROPY kids again. The organization gives children and their families a chance to take a break from the daily grind of dealing with illness and create lasting memories through year-round A Kid Again Adventures. The experiences include trips to local amusement parks, zoos and sporting events.

The Indiana Chapter is the first outside Ohio and is part of a strategic shift to expand the organization to a national level.

The organization provides more than 30 adventures to more than 13,000 people each year and has served more than 219,000 people since its creation in 1995.

Carmel resident Jimmy Pierri serves on the A Kid Again advisory board for the Indiana Chapter.

awarded A Kid Again the “Tip of the Hat Award” and donated $125,000 to the organization. In 2017, LIDS raised funds for the nonprofit throughout stores in the Midwest through its “Just Do It” campaign.

LIDS recently hosted an A Kid Again adventure. Pierri said A Kid Again Adventures help facilitate the recovery for children and their families. The adventures are group activities led by volunteers and A Kid Again employees and are designed for the whole family. Each family is provided with parking, a meal, complimentary tickets, a dedicated A Kid Again volunteer and a gift for every child in the family younger than 20.

“In the adventure, in the moment, you see the disease or whatever is ailing these kids, you see it kind of go away,” Pierri said. “It inspires them to get well.”

Pierri has attended several A Kid Again Adventures, including trips to Kings Island, and said the adventures create a ripple effect of smiles, relief and joy for the children and their families.

“Seeing the families at an adventure, despite their circumstance, there’s just a sense of relief that you can see through their smiles,” Pierri said.

ZCHS girls cross country team finishes 2nd

By Mark Ambrogi •mark@youarecurrent.com Although the Zionsville Community High School girls cross country team fell short in defending its state title, coach Suzanne Rigg was not disappointed with the SPORTS effort.

“The girls had really strong performances,” Rigg said. “(Team champion Fort Wayne Carroll) had three girls that were at the very top. It’s hard to compete when you have three girls that far up there. The Zionsville girls ran really solid races.”

Carroll captured the Oct. 27 Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Cross Country State Finals championship at Terre Haute with 85 points, outdistancing second-place Zionsville with 149.

In 2017, Zionsville won with 118 points while Carroll placed second with 129. The Eagles graduated their No. 1 runner, Sophia Rigg, the coach’s daughter, and No. 5 runner, Annie Pappas, from the 2017 squad. Sophia is competing at North Carolina State.

The rest of the team returned and added freshman Lydia Moore and junior Lauren Rinehart, a transfer from Brownsburg.

Junior Katelyn Wasson was the top Zionsvlle finisher in 15th place overall. Senior Brooke Meredith was next in 30th.

Moore was 50th, junior Sara Petersen was 53rd and Rinehart was 61st.

“I’m really excited for next year,” Rigg said. “We just have to keep them all healthy.”

“It seems like every year they feed off the success and experience of the girls that have come before,” Rigg said.

“For me, that’s what is fun about this because they have that confidence now that they can be good. They can not only make it to state but do well. It’s fun to watch that progress.”

The future looks positive as well with Zionsville Middle School winning the state big school/girls open division title at the Indiana Middle School Championships Sept. 29. Maryclaire Swanson, from ZMS, was second individually.

Boys & Girls Club regroups as a county-wide organization

By Sara Baldwin Schatz • sara@youarecurrent.com At the Oct. 27 Boys & Girls Club Be Great Breakfast fundraiser, the gym of what was formerly known as the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville’s Club West COVER STORY on 700 East in Whitestown was transformed into a large dining hall. Though the worn gym walls were exposed, the floor was covered with vinyl and white tablecloths were adorned with rolled silverware. Piping-hot silver platters filled with steaming breakfast food were lined up behind the tables. Keynote speaker Chuck Pagano, former Colts head coach, sat at a table in the front.

Tim Fretz, CEO of BAGCOZ, opened the event with a big announcement.

“Effective Oct. 1, we are now the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County,” he said.

Fretz told the crowd that the Zionsville and Whitestown clubs, along with the Lebanon Area Boys & Girls Club, became the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County Oct. 1. The new club will still have three locations: Lebanon, Whitestown and Zionsville.

“There is a national trend of merging clubs,” Fretz said.

The structural change, which has been in progress for 10 months, allows the organization to combine fundraising efforts and restructure staff to better serve the community’s needs.

The boards of directors of both clubs have been working jointly with support and guidance from the national arm of the Boys & Girls Club. Between the three locations, the club serves more than 3,100 Boone County children in sports leagues and summer camps. There are more than 450 students weekly who are in the before- and after-school programs.

“Both clubs have been doing great work in their communities. Due to the continued growth in the area, both boards felt merging the two clubs would bring more resources to the organization and would be the best option for the future of the youth in our community,” board President Rob Schein said.

In 1953, the Lebanon Area Boys & Girls Club opened its doors. As the county’s population grew, a second club was established in Zionsville in 1983. The two clubs separated in 1984 into the Lebanon Area Boys & Girls Club and the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville. In 2011, the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville purchased the ZSports and Dance Center and turned it into Club West. Because of its location, the club serves youth from Zionsville, Whitestown and Lebanon.

“This reunification is really coming back to our roots,” said Susie McKenna, BGCBC board member.

McKenna said a number of sizable donations have allowed the organization to pay off the mortgage on Club West and make necessary repairs and changes to the building. The second floor is under construction and will soon house a computer lab, library and art room, funded by a Lowes Renovation Across the Nation $50,000 grant and a United Way capital campaign.

As the cherry on top of an exciting event, Fretz announced that the gym at Club West would be renamed The Holliday Family Gymnasium, for a large donation made by the Holliday Family in honor of the late John Holliday.

The Boys & Girls Club of Boone County has raised more than $114,000 toward its $200,000 goal. If the goal is reached, the funds will be matched by United Way. Brianna Ramirez was a 2018 Boys & Girls Club Youth of

the Year finalist. She spoke at the Be Great Breakfast about her experience at BGCBC and the lessons she learned.

“The first lesson I learned was to accept others,” she said.

Ramirez said she started at the club a shy, introverted girl but with the help of staff she discovered a love for art and an ability to open up to others.

“The club is and always will be my home away from home,” she said.

Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Pagano spoke at the Oct. 27 Be Great Breakfast about his battle with cancer and thanked the Zionsville community for embracing him during that time. • “Because of the fear of failure and being criticized, most people won’t put themselves out there. But that just comes with the territory. Somewhere in the middle (of the criticism and the praise) is reality.”

LETTER Give the blessing of prayer

Commentary by Terry Anker Perhaps we’ve already heard it.

Maybe a passing billboard caught our eye. Or, it could have been a television commercial that planted the suggestion. For the intelligent and erudite, it might have been a well-placed advertisement in this very newspaper that brought it to your attention. Regardless of the genesis, it seems difficult to believe that it is time for another election.

On Nov. 6, many of us will march to the polls. Millions already have made the trip through the newly instituted early voting in addition to the time-tested standard of advanced absentee suffrage. Good, and add this voice to the many that urge us to exercise the right. If you haven’t yet done it, drop this paper and vote – now. For those of us who have, well done.

Still, millions will skip the ballot box entirely. Some for reasons that may seem good enough but most for convenience or lack of will. Sure, politics is more than a bit unpleasant. It always has been. Fantasy writer and would-be Minnesotan office-bearer Will Shetterly once correctly remarked that “politics is a dirty business, but if you do not do politics, politics will be done to you.”

In this acrimonious electorate, there are those who have decided to take a break by working to avoid participation in the whole circus.

If we don’t vote, for any candidate, how can they be responsible for the behavior of those elected? If we feel uninformed, how can we make an informed choice? Hmm. Can one be a conscientious objector to elections? Perhaps. Yet, isn’t a nonvote, in most cases, the same as a consent to the rule of the minority?

Our resistance is registered as an advantage to the largest of the sets of those motivated to participate.

There is no “opt out.”

Reelin’ in the years Commentary by Danielle Wilson My baby is 20 today. Twenty! I think I’m in shock. I am way too young to have a 20-yearold and he’s way too young to HUMOR be 20. Another startling development? Yesterday, my twins were accepted to college. What the what!

How is this happening? When I asked a colleague, he said, “The days go by slowly, but the years? The years fly by.” Preach.

I remember when I had three under 3.

I’d wake up at the crack of dawn, already anxious about what kind of parenting hell I’d have to survive. Physically exhausting, emotionally challenging and psychologically punishing – each day seemed interminable.

Odds were good that I wouldn’t eat anything other than a stray Gerber puff and a toasted-hours-ago bagel, and that at some point I’d be exposed to a biochemical substance that required a Clorox hose-down and several shouted expletives. By nightfall, I’d usually collapse into bed, say a quick prayer

that everyone would sleep through the night and fall into a fitful repose only to do it all again come sunrise.

I can recall with vivid detail harrowing trips to the Fishers YMCA, the Children’s Museum and a particularly controversial depantsing at the Carmel Library that nearly earned me a story-hour lifetime ban. I remember individual playdates, specific neighborhood walks and even the guest lists for all the birthday parties. But I can’t tell you where all the years went. I cannot remember when my two sons suddenly needed razors or when my daughters began wearing makeup. I literally have no idea when my kids grew up.

Seriously, where has the time gone? My baby is 20! Peace out.

Long live coffee and debates Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just read on AOL that coffee first thing in the morning is bad for you. Hard to believe, isn’t it? No, not the cofHUMOR fee part — the fact I still have AOL. Apparently, you mess with your internal clock when you drink java on an empty stomach. That morning cup of joe can backfire and make you feel sleepier and grumpier. Has no one noticed this in 300 years?

Beneath that article was another medical finding, that women who keep quiet during an argument with their husbands are four times more likely to die from heart disease.

So, if I argue with my wife, I’m a boorish brute and a sexist. But if she wants to argue with me, she’ll live longer.

We have debated just about everything in our 39 years of marriage: How to eat popcorn; if it’s a good idea to nap in the middle of the day; how to load a dishwasher; and high flame or low for scrambled eggs. We once debated whether my mother knew how to raise children. I thought my mom had done a pretty good job, but Mary Ellen provided some very strong evidence to the contrary: Me!

I must not be a very good debater because I seem to lose the exchange, even if I have most facts in my favor. For example, I was pretty sure this past July was my wife’s 67th birthday, but she claimed she was only 66. I dug out her passport and birth certificate from our safe deposit box.

I tried to further bolster my position with this argument: “Mary Ellen, remember when we got married, we talked about there being a four-year difference in our age?”

“Oh, Dick, you’re living in the past. That was 38 years ago.”

I hope the two of us have many more heated discussions. I figure if she keeps arguing with me, she will stay healthy. And I’m still going to continue to drink huge amounts of coffee, even if it makes me sleepy and cantankerous.

I know you’re tempted to say, “Wouldn’t that be grounds for divorce?”

Pianist Jon Nakamatsu to make debut appearance with Carmel Symphony Orchestra

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Classical pianist Jon Nakamatsu’s journey has been one of perseverance.

Nakamatsu was a high MUSIC school German language teacher in California when he won the gold medal at Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in June 1997.

“It went by in a flash. I can’t believe it’s been (more than) 20 years,” Nakamatsu said. “It seems like a dream and I have to go back to my real job teaching school. I think it went by so fast. Right after the competition, the tour started three days later and because they (concerts) never stopped, it’s just been a whirlwind. In that time what transformed my life is being on stage constantly. I guess because I never knew if this career was going to happen for me, it’s kind of a pinch yourself moment when I get to walk on stage. That’s why coming to Carmel is so special. I never would have been there if it wouldn’t have been for an event 20 years ago.”

Nakamatsu will make his first appearance with Carmel Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. Nakamatsu, who has worked with CSO Music Director Janna Hymes previously with another orchestra, will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.”

“The wonderful moment for the audience is the 18th variation, which is the famous one,” Nakamatsu said. “Rachmaninoff is a love, of course. He wrote so many great things for the piano. I enjoy playing it every time. It’s one of those pieces where you always find something new, different and exciting. It reveals its secrets over time to us.”

Hymes stated Rachmaninoff has “a way of transporting listeners to another place with his work, and this piece is no exception, especially performed by Jon.” Nakamatsu compared winning the Van Cliburn competition to winning the musical equivalent of the Olympics.

“It’s every four years and basically can make your career,” Nakamatsu said. “But while the Olympics is often the height of an athlete’s career, for musicians, the competition is just the start. What winning does is allows you marketability. I was the same person the day before the competition as I was the day after, but suddenly I was set for a tour. It’s not the most glamorous entree into the world, but that’s how the business works. The competition sets up tours for you for a year or two years, but then you are on your own.”

The victory abruptly ended Nakamatsu’s teaching career.

“It was just a magical opportunity,” he said.

Nakamatsu worked with private teacher Marina Derryberry starting at age 6.

“She knew how to prepare someone for a competition 20 years later, so we had a long journey together and she was there when I won,” Nakamatsu said. “She was there when I first played at Carnegie Hall.

It was a huge common trip for both of us. I feel so lucky we had that.”

Derryberry died in 2009.

Before his Van Cliburn competition success, Nakamatsu had his ups and downs in competitions.

“You lose more than you win, that’s for sure,” he said. “There’s no chance of winning if you don’t risk losing. I’ve learned more from the things that I lost and the number of times people slammed doors in my face. It wasn’t just competitions. It was knocking on managements’ doors.

Having people tell you you’re not good enough, you’ll never make it, there’s no reason why you should be here. If you can weather that in any profession and get through the ugliness of that, I think you have a chance for something amazing.”

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 1464 W. 186th St., Indianapolis What to get: Tilapia Price: $25.75 Anna’s take: I sampled several dishes at Oakley’s Bistro on the north side of Indianapolis, all of which blew me away. The meal started with chef Steve Oakley’s famous shrimp corndog, the recipe that beat Bobby Flay last year in a 2017 Food Network episode of “Beat Bobby Flay.” The corndogs are al a carte at $2.75 each. They consist of cocktail-sized shrimp dipped in Oakley’s secret corndog batter and then fried. They are topped with bistro honey mustard, lending a sweet finish. The corndogs are topped with microgreens.

I then ordered the Lobster Waffle ( $14.75).

This was my favorite dish because of its taste and uniqueness. Essentially, the Lobster Waffle is exactly as it sounds – a basil roasted garlic waffle topped with lobster bites, sautéed zucchini, crispy leeks, mustard cream and tomato jam. It is an exotic twist on the traditional chicken-and-waffles dish, and it was phenomenal.

I then tried the Three Little Pigs ($16.75),

which are three small, individual pork dishes. One is a suckling pig croquette. Another is a country pate. The other is pork belly.

This dish was rich and decadent. If you look closely throughout the restaurant, pigs are everywhere in the decorations because chef Oakley loves to create pork-centered dishes.

For my entrée, I opted for the tilapia. The thick slab of mild fish is served with a side of butternut squash risotto inside an edible potato basket, adorned by pine nuts around the plate. The tilapia is seared and served atop tender baby vegetables and wholeroasted tomatoes. A tomato fennel fondue adds a bright flash of color.

Much of the menu changes seasonally, but a few items are staples, such as the Mac-N-Goat Cheese ($6.75), which is mixed with a pesto sauce. The goat cheese gives the dish a rich taste.

For dessert, my sweet tooth craved the chocolate whiskey cake ($8.75), served with caramelized bananas, chocolate mousse and a hearty scoop of Cookie Monster ice cream. It was a fantastic finisher.

Suggested pairings: If ordering the tilapia, pair it with a 2017 Joseph Drouhin Macon-Villages, a dry, white French Chardonnay that tastes minerally and crisp, not oaky and buttery. For the beer drinkers, order the Hefeweizen Grapefruit Bier Schofferhofer.

Background Info: This 1998 home on Geist Reservoir was the perfect place for the homeowners to settle down in retirement. They completed their basement and kitchen remodel last year. The outdoor living expansion was the last piece of the puzzle to complete.

2. A new covered porch roof was extended to cover part of the upper deck and a new screened porch was added.

3. The new custom exterior staircase is the focal point of the space. Its curved design adds visual appeal to the home.

Commentary by Don Knebel Visitors to Arlington National Cemetery are often surprised to find an imposing Greek revival-style mansion close to rows of tombstones a few hundred TRAVEL yards uphill from President John F. Kennedy’s Eternal Flame. The mansion’s twisted history explains both the cemetery’s location and its name.

In 1802, George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted son of George Washington, began building a massive house atop Washington Hill, just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Custis wanted the house, visible from the just-completed Capitol, to be a memorial to President Washington and a repository for his memorabilia. The completed house was 140 feet wide and featured enormous Doric columns. Custis named it Arlington House after the family homestead.

Upon Custis’ death, Arlington House and the surrounding 1,100 acres passed to his daughter, Mary, who had lived in the house with Robert E. Lee since her marriage to him in 1831. When Virginia seceded from the Union in April 1861, Lee left Arlington House

to command Confederate forces and Mary left for her own safety. Union forces soon occupied Arlington House to prevent Confederate forces from lobbing cannon balls onto the Capitol from Washington Hill. In 1864, the United States government obtained Arlington House and its grounds in a tax sale the Supreme Court later ruled was illegal. To prevent Lee and his family from ever again using Arlington House as a residence, the Army designated the area Arlington National Cemetery and began burying Union dead close to the house.

Today, Arlington National Cemetery contains more than 400,000 graves, including that of President Kennedy. Jacqueline Kennedy selected the burial site just east of Arlington House for its spectacular view of Washington, D.C. Arlington House (previously called the Custis-Lee Mansion) is now maintained by the National Park Service as a memorial to Robert E. Lee. Regarding your grammar distinction, let’s tackle it head-on. Most people probably think they know what an acronym is, but let’s review. An acronym is an abbreviation where the abbreviation is formed from letters of other words, usually the first letter of each word. This abbreviation (to be considered an acronym) needs to be pronounceable as its own word. Examples include NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), radar (Radio Detection and Ranging), SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) and Taser (Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle).

If you are pronouncing the abbreviation as its own word, your resulting word is an

acronym. On the other hand, if you’re pronouncing the letters of each word, you’ve got an initialism on your hands. Examples of initialisms include DVD (digital versatile disc), FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and FYI (for your information). Initialisms are traditionally capitalized.

Now, things get murky, thanks to the internet. Are internet slang abbreviations like LOL (laughing out loud) and ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) acronyms or initialisms?

I’ve heard people pronounce each of these abbreviated phrases using just the letters as well as spoken phonetically. In the case of ROFL, the acronym version rhymes with “awful.” And, with the proliferation of texting and social media commenting, these abbreviations are increasingly not capitalized.

As popular usage of the term acronym has expanded to include initialisms, I wouldn’t be surprised if dictionaries follow suit to include initialisms in the definition of acronyms.
