Area move-ins up 14 pct.; towns see rapid growth

It’s no secret the Zionsville and Whitestown areas continue to see a growth spurt. development Welcomemat Services, a mover marketing and technology company, showed a 14 percent increase in the number of people moving into the zip code 46077 from the second quarter of 2015 (283 people) and number of people moving into the area during quarter two in 2016 (323 people).

“We are seeing an inNorton crease because I’m sure Zionsville is such a great place to live,” said Sheryl Eickman, who owns the Welcomemat Services franchise. “There is a low crime rate, great schools and great values.

It’s a very impressive community.”

The 46077 zip code covers Zionsville, part of Whitestown and a small section of west Carmel.

“There is growth in Whitestown in the 46077 zip code and 46075 area,” Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “As far as the Indiana Business Research Center, for the fifth year in a row Whitestown is the fastest growing. Last year we had 14 percent growth in population, which leads the state.”

Norton said there has been tremendous retail growth in the Anson development,

the majority of which is in 46077, as well as housing.

“Westport Homes in the 46077 area in Whitestown is starting to kick off sales,” Norton said. “All of the lots in Eagles Nest have now been built. I don’t know what the population’s percentage growth will be for 2016, but I think it will be similar to 2015.”

According to the Indiana Business Research Center, Whitestown’s population grew to 6,013 in 2015.

“We believe in 2016, we’ll have around 6,800, and that’s why we’re doing a special census,” Norton said.

DeLong Town of Zionsville Planning Director Wayne DeLong said Zionsville’s population growth is steady.

“We’re seeing on average 400 new residents a year,” DeLong said. “That’s looking at new housing units that are being created.”

DeLong said there is additional growth coming with more housing developments, such as Hampshire and Inglenook under construction.

Zionsville’s population grew from 25,687 in 2014 to 26,296 in 2015, not including the reorganization with Perry Township.

The population grew by 9,000 when Union Township and unincorporated areas of Eagle Township became part of Zionsville in 2010.

Get creative recycling ideas

By Sierra Solis • news@currentzionsville.com Guests can take a creative approach to recycling at the sixth annual Do It Again Recycled Art Market, set for 10 a.m. to event 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center.

From turning the thermostat down to bicycling more, visitors can learn about simple ways to protect the earth.

In partnership with the Spirit and Place Festival, the free event will be themed “Home is what you make of it.” Local artists will display their use of recycled items in creating art, such as ornaments, journals, hats, purses and other items.

Hands-on activities for all ages will be offered, including five-minute art tables, junk sculptures, a green photo booth and a community collage with ideas on living green. A silent auction will feature a hand-painted rain barrel.

This year the event will feature Cedar Street Builders. The company was the first in Indiana to build a passive house, a home that is energy-efficient in cooling and heating.

Flight1 teaches children to soar despite struggles

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Caroline Hoy was working as a social media contractor when she was asked to post a job opening that caught her nonprofit eye.

“Good communication skills. Enjoys being with people. Aviation background a plus. I’m reading it and thinking, ‘That’s me!,’” she said. “It was a really special sort of culmination of some of my background in one position.”

In March, the Carmel resident became the first executive director of Flight1, a nonprofit that teaches children facing hardships to fly – literally. During the free three-year program, participants spend time in a simulator before making three flights in a real airplane out of the Indianapolis International Airport in Zionsville or Indianapolis Regional Airport in Greenfield.

“The main point is for them to literally be able to take the controls and feel the confidence of being the decision-maker in their lives,” Hoy said. “There’s just something really special about that sense of control when you are the one piloting the airplane wherever you want it to go. When they get out they

just have a spring in their step that is very heartwarming.”

For Tommy Aldrich, Flight1 helped provide a sense of direction after the death of his father in 2012 left his world in shambles. Now 13, he said Flight1 helped him face his fears.

“I never flew a plane before, and I was scared at first. I was also scared when my dad passed away,” he said. “Flight1 gave me a lot of courage when I flew the plane, and that kind of helped me fly with my dad in spirit.”

Hoy feels that she is able to relate to

families going through the program because tragedy struck her own family in 2013. Her oldest daughter died suddenly at age 4. Doctors determined she had a common virus that led to viral meningitis and multiple organ failure.

“It was such a shock,” Hoy said, adding that Audrey had been healthy her whole life. “You never expect something like that.”

Now, Hoy reaches out to other families in the midst of difficult times. Flight1 primarily accepts children who are facing health challenges, have an ill family member or have recently suffered the death of a loved one. She enjoys watching the difference a flight can make in their lives, and she’s hoping others will, too.

“I would invite anyone who’s curious about what we do to come to one of our flight events and see firsthand the kids and their faces when they get out of the airplane.”

The nonprofit doesn’t own any aircraft but rents them at the airports. Hoy anticipates that people volunteering their planes for the program will be “crucial to our next growth step,” she said.

ZWMS teacher academic coach finalist

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville West Middle School social studies teacher Libby Rease loves teaching U.S. history, but a change of achievement pace is always nice.

“What I really like about the Academic Super Bowl is every year they choose a different subject, so it’s not always U.S. history,” Rease said. “So not only do I get to help the students learn about other topics, like this year it’s the French Revolution, it also allows me to dig in deeper to the different topics. I love their enthusiasm for whatever subject it is, and they’re really fun to Rease coach.”

Rease, who teaches U.S. history for eighth graders at ZWMS, was named one of the four middle school finalists for the Indiana Association of School Principals for Academic Coach of the Year. The finalists were honored at an IASP luncheon in late September. Although she didn’t win, Rease said she was honored to be a finalist.

Rease serves as the Academic Junior Super Bowl coordinator and coaches the history section for the members. Rease was nominated

by ZWMS Principal Matt Doublestein.

ZWMS will host the Academic Junior Support Bowl for 12 area schools for the fourth consecutive year in April 2017.

This is Rease’s 17th year teaching middle school history in Zionsville Community Schools. She previously taught at Zionsville Middle School. She has worked as an Academic Bowl coach for both middle schools for 15 years. Before starting as a history teacher, she was a permanent substitute teacher for two years in ZCS. Prior to that, she was a preschool teacher at Traders Point Christian Academy and then a substitute teacher for several schools for several years.

“I started teaching after my kids were in school,” said Rease, an Indianapolis native who graduated from Bradley University with an education and history degree in 1979.

Rease, a Brownsburg resident, and her husband, Randy, have two grown children.

Candice Hansen, 34, lives in Wausau, Wis., and is married with three children, Morea, 6, Westley, 4 and Cora, 2. Rease’s son, Doug, 30, lives in Zionsville and is a pilot for JetBlue. Doug’s wife is Jenna.

What it means: The budget includes general fund expenses for teacher salaries and classroom expenses, transportation, building and maintenance, capital projects, debt service and more.

What it means: ZCS enrollment has increased by 196 students from one year ago. Within this increase, there were 430 students who left the district and 581 students who moved into the district, not including graduating seniors and incoming kindergarteners. The largest single grade level is the seventh grade class with 565 students.

What’s next: Thanks to the 2015 referendum, class sizes have stabilized. At the middle and high school level there are 129 fewer sections of core level classes that have 30 or more students, and no core classes have more than 35 students.

All natural disasters at the hand of Mother Nature, happening during our time. giving back My family and I are fortunate that we have never been through anything like these events, but when my middle son, Collin, 16, and I recently returned from a three-day trip to Baton Rouge, we truly had a greater appreciation for what Ms. Nature could do at any moment.

We flew down there on a whim to help those affected by the recent flooding, which damaged 146,000 homes and forced thousands of Louisianans into shelters. The flood was characterized as the worst U.S. natural disaster since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Collin and I wanted to help demo homes, and that’s what we did. Through a local friend, I was able to connect with a church in the Baton Rouge area that placed us on a “demo team,” and we went to work. Walking into our first home, you could smell the mold rapidly growing, with the water lines at waist level.

We helped an elderly woman named Hilda pull up her entire wood flooring, knock down cabinets, remove drywall and carry debris (the entire contents of her home) to the sidewalk

so that a large crane could eventually come by to remove what it could. Imagine the same scenario for everyone in just one neighborhood. It looked like a war zone!

In those few days we were able to help three other elderly people, all of whom had no flood insurance. It was heartbreaking hearing their stories, but it was an eye-opening experience for both me and my son and the people in Baton Rouge who will have to continue their clean up, unfortunately, for years to come.

Cubs run draws fans to Rush

By Nick Poust • news@currentzionsville.com In January, Zionsville neighbors and Cubs fans Jeff Sepiol and Johnny Vargo had an idea to start a Chicagoworld series themed bar.

Rush on Main opened in March, just in time for baseball season. Little did they know it would be a historic one for their success-starved favorite team. With the Chicago Cubs seeking their first World Series win in 108 years, business has been good.

“The reception has been great,” Sepiol said.

“The support in this community has been unbelievable. It’s a little overwhelming. We’re really fortunate.”

Sixty-plus people packed into Rush On Main for Game 2 of the World Series Oct. 26, which Sepiol said was “the slowest Cubs postseason game we’ve had.” The restaurant features photos of Wrigley Field and Chicago landmarks as décor throughout the space.

As customers waited for an appetizer, Sepiol came over and put a piece of wax paper down for a placemat.

“We’re not plate people here,” he said.

The crowd ooh’d and ahh’d to big hits and strikeouts during the game, drinking beers and eating everything from the Slammin’ Sammy, a ham and cheese sandwich, to Da Fridge burger, stacked with three patties and three types of cheese.

“Back in March and April, Johnny and I said, ‘Hey, what if the Cubs go to the World Series?’ and here we are,” Sepiol said. “It’s surreal.”

Women Build is a national Habitat for Humanity program designed to provide a comfortable learning environment for women to discover they can build a Habitat for Humanity home. More than 50 women recently showed up at the Boone Village Shopping Center in rainy conditions to build the walls for the home.

The walls were loaded onto flatbed trucks and transported to the Lebanon build site. All the exterior walls were in place by the end of the first day. Thirty-three teams, each consisting of 10 women, have raised funds to completely finance the cost of building the home.

They plan to have it complete in eight weeks.

“We have given ourselves a big challenge again this year — building this house in just eight weeks,” said Sue Burks, Habitat for Humanity of Boone County volunteer coordinator.

“However, we are confident that we can get the job done with all these dedicated women.”

Each team will be assigned one build day.

The first team began work Sept. 13 with completion of the house planned for midNovember. The work week will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Fundraising events by many teams were held this summer to build enthusiasm and get organized.

“It is so impressive how well these ladies have organized every phase of this build, from fundraising to pounding nails,” said Steve Furste, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Boone County.

Let me say a few things about dogs in their dotage. Specifically, how my dog Brutie — now 15 years old — spends his plain talk days and nights.

Despite not being socialized in the house until he was three months old, Brutie was housebroken quickly. When he needed to go, he whined, did a little dance and headed for the door. Although he would piddle just about anywhere in the yard, one area only was reserved for heavy commerce.

And so it went throughout the years. Ninety percent of my lawn was normal for the neighborhood, while the remaining 10 percent had a lushness to it that made lawn care specialists slow down and wonder as they drove by.

Outside, Brutie still heads for the old dumping ground, but inside his dance routine has changed. He sleeps a lot, and sometimes when he wakes he has difficulty getting the caboose to communicate with the engine. And while his front legs are already in motion, his hindquarters remain in prelaunch.

Once in gear he raises his tail high and goes into a partial squat, all while trying to whine, whimper and head for the door.

He doesn’t always make it, and sometimes

leaves a small deposit behind. This confuses and embarrasses him. As far as he knew, he was in full throttle headed for the northwest corner of the yard.

We have learned to watch for Brutie’s “hightail” mode, and whenever he flies his flag, we rush him out the door, and — as the old joke goes — hope everything comes out all right.

Sometimes he wakes me to go out a couple times during the night. It’s OK, since I usually have to go myself. There are some parallels between dogs and guys in their dotage.

The vet says Brutie is mostly deaf and nearly blind. Mysteriously, he can still hear me open the refrigerator from three rooms away, and he can see me rise from my chair to go into the kitchen — even when he is sound asleep.

Brutie has been a good friend for many years. We all have limited time, so it’s easy to forgive his mishaps, and I don’t have a problem being his doorman whenever he needs to hightail it.

Zionsville’s Joe Hauptmann leads Libertarian presidential campaign in Indiana

By Nick Poust• news@currentzionsville.com With voters running out of time to decide between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, Zionsville’s Joe Hauptmann is working to promote another option: Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party’s presidential cover story nominee.

Hauptmann, the Indiana state director for the Gary Johnson for President campaign, knows a little bit about what it’s like to go up against Democrats and Republicans. He ran for Congress in 1998 and holds the national record for a Libertarian candidate against a Democrat and Republican by polling 11 percent against Dan Burton and Bobby Kern in 1998.

“I’m hoping this election I get knocked out of that chair,” he said.

Hauptmann expects Johnson to be the next third party candidate to rattle a system that has long been dominated by Republicans and Democrats.

“The fact that Democrat PACs are actually spending money attacking us is something new,” Hauptmann said. “It’s obvious that we are relevant. It’s an encouraging thing. It’s a wake-up call for all of the people who have been into the minor parties for a long time. It’s not just about educating people, and this is what we’re going to look forward to in the future.”

Hauptmann sees encouraging signs. He said he has almost 2,000 volunteers in Indiana interested in getting involved, most of whom are looking to be part of a campaign for the first time.

For Hauptmann, having to get in touch with so many people is a good problem to have.

“My job, quite frankly, is the problem of an abundance of wealth,” Hauptmann said. “We’ve never had this many volunteers. We’ve never had this kind of positive reaction before.

people walking into our office in Broad Ripple to get signs. I’ve never been out of the office more than a half hour without somebody stopping me with a positive comment. The response has been excellent.”

Although that may be the case, Hauptmann lamented that the system is “effectively designed so that there’s no chance of ever meeting the requirements.” Johnson is making a presence in the polls, but Hauptmann said that’s about all that can happen in this system.

“The commission is not non-partisan, it is bi-partisan,” Hauptmann said. “The commission is set up by the Democrats and Republicans. The League of Women Voters actually dropped out of running the debates when they basically said it is not designed to increase discussion. It is designed to limit it.”

Although he finds that discouraging, Hauptmann said the campaigns of Clinton and Trump are opening doors for Johnson.

“Both of them are basically pushing the idea of look at how incredibly bad the other guy is,” Hauptmann said. “Therefore, the last thing they want is a rational third person up there to draw those votes. With Gary Johnson up there, it’s showing there’s a third choice. That does not play well into their playbook.”

Johnson has a playbook of his own, giving the Libertarian Party a louder voice and undecided voters another option.

“People should be proud of their vote,” Hauptmann said.

“This is about who you think should be the best president. If you really think that we need the wall, you should be voting for Trump. If you really think it’s her time, then you should be voting for Hillary. But if you’re just voting to keep the other guy out, then I think voters should be looking at Gary Johnson.”

early voting In Boone County, 4,786 voters had cast ballots in early voting as of approximately 10 a.m. Oct. 28. In the 2012 election 8,197 people cast ballots during early voting.

The results of those votes won’t be made known until Election Day, but Boone County Deputy Clerk Jessica Fouts said she’s seen interest in candidates other than Clinton and Trump.

“I’ve had several people call and ask, ‘How do I do a write-in?’

But as to who has done it, we won’t know until Election Day,” Fouts said.

If we were on the team Everywhere we go we find ourselves engaged in discourse about the upcoming elections, national and local. It’s difficult to resist commenting and offering our two-cents worth (that’s about all it’s worth, frankly). We’ve been reading recently that Donald Trump apparently is getting some traction with his “the election is rigged” line. Perhaps it’s appealing to some that feel everything in this nation is rigged, with Wall Street, lobbyists, inside-the-beltway “experts”, and other circles conspiring to enrich themselves at the expense of the rest of us. There’s no question there’s a heightened level of frustration out there. And, we are embarrassed, as members of the media, to witness the unprecedented scorn heaped upon the Republican nominee by the “neutral” media. Granted, Trump provides plenty of fodder to feed the media’s anti-Trump diatribe, but, still, it should remain as objective as possible in its mainstream coverage. Otherwise, put opinion where it belongs: on the opinion page. Since this arguably has become the “year of the outsider,” we would encourage Trump to continue talk of a rigged system.

But he should go beyond that. He should explain the establishment isn’t against him, but, rather, you, the voter. And keep repeating it. Every member of the establishment - and this includes Republicans - is against anything other than the status quo, and they want Hillary Clinton in the White House, guaranteeing nothing changes. They want their cushy jobs protected. In an attempt to be fair, we offer this advice to Hillary Clinton: Keep cutting Wikileaks’ access to the Internet. The less voters know about the inner workings of your campaign, the better.

The body politic Commentary by Terry Anker Oxford defines us thusly: The people of a nation, state, or society considered collectively as an organized group of citizens – the body politic. We are one, whether at this moment we feel like it. Social media, television and even your friendly local newspaper seem especially full of political opinion.

And, like a body enduring the challenge of a lengthy race, our extremities long for an end to the test of endurance. Limbs, heart and lungs all cry out for speedy conclusion. But our brain, mighty and exalted, commands that we push ourselves to a strong finish.

Our body politic strains but will soon recover and find itself ready to compete again.

We’ll sleep, recuperate and rebuild.

Yes, Election Day is finally approaching.

To all who are eligible to cast a ballot and who have yet to exercise the right, go vote: Do it now or do it on our nation’s proper Election Day. But do it. The year 2016, a year unlike many before it, has divided us into

distinct candidate camps with disparate, some might argue desperate, points of view. OK. Yet it is our obligation to this body politic to participate.

Whatever our choices may be, there is respect in the act and commitment we make.

Libertarian, Democrat, Republican or Independent. This time Susan Brooks deserves another go. Todd Rokita, too. Carmel-raised Todd Young seems right for the Senate. The best economic plan is Eric Holcomb’s. Then, choose Mike Pence and his running mate to ensure a Hoosier at the top on Inauguration Day. In claiming a preference, no offense is intended or warranted. Let’s hope our body politic makes it across the finish line free from injury and still better because of the race.

Today was a good day. True, I stepped in dog poop three times and briefly electrocuted myself. But overall, I humor place this particular Tuesday firmly in the “More Than Just Survived” category. Why? Well, I was doing what I love best — futzing around with my Halloween yard décor.

See, we Wilsons (really just me) take Oct. 31 very seriously. Our (my) goal is to be the best “Halloween house” in a three-mile radius, eventually five. Granted, we don’t have much competition right now, but I’m hoping by continually adding one life-size witch/ vampire/Grim Reaper and two strands of orange lights each year, we’ll inspire others to pick up the torch (and a few pitchforks, and maybe a possessed scarecrow). Because honestly, when else can you trash your yard with strobe lights, fake webbing and Regan from “The Excorcist” and not be fined by the neighborhood association?

By the time you’re reading this, of course, the best holiday of the season will be over and done with, and I’ll be staring at a pile of plastic bones, black capes and dead batteries. Sadder still, I’ll be back at work and will have neither the time nor the inclination to clean up said junk heap.

That’s another reason why today was so wonderful – my kids were at school while I was out frolicking in my faux graveyard, setting up Regan’s tea party. As luck would have it, my fall break does not align with theirs, and I’ve been forced to stay home all week without them (outward sigh, inward jubilation).

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll love my children.

And lately, I’ve even started liking a couple of them. But they are exhausting, and unless I want to end up looking like the zombie I miraculously rigged up in the front maple, I need to plan moments where I can forget about the carpooling and cooking and be a kid myself.

So yes, I trod on squishy dog turds throughout most of the afternoon, and suffered mild electric shock while masterfully configuring 17 extension cords, but I definitely had a good day. Peace out.

Feeding frenzy Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The Wolfsies have accepted two invitations to dinner on Thanksgiving. The Haversticks always invite my wife and son and humor me to join them at a lovely buffet at a downtown hotel. Since Mary Ellen and I have siblings who live out of town, we appreciate this gesture. I come from a pretty good size family in New York, but we’re not talking to each other because of a contentious Thanksgiving about 25 years ago.

For you ornithology buffs, please note: I have seen a turkey fly.

Our friends the Goslings have invited us to their house later in the afternoon. The Wolfsies offered to bring something to share at the Gosling dinner pitch-in. But what we contribute (and how much) might depend on the noon smorgasbord downtown — and whether the restaurant has those big Styrofoam to-go boxes.

If Mary Ellen decides to cook, how much are we supposed to bring? Calculating that would stump even Albert Einstein, who came from a nice Jewish family where food obviously played a very important role. Some biographers think the equation E=mc2 really meant the amount of food you can Eat (that would

be E) is equal to the size of the average Mouth (that’s M) times the number of cousins (C) who were invited. Then Einstein’s mother just squared everything to ensure there would be leftovers.

Mary Ellen will watch her prepared food like a hawk, concerned it may go unappreciated, thus requiring her to slither out the door with a still-full casserole. But there is an even worse scenario: suppose her dish is completely consumed. Not a scrap left. That would mean she didn’t bring enough. This miscalculation would stain the reputation of the entire Wolfsie clan.

So here’s how we figure it. Dan and Noelle Gosling are having 20 people for dinner, so we need to make enough mashed potatoes for 40 people, because if the spuds are delish, everyone will have seconds. But other people are also bringing dishes. So if all 20 people bring enough food for 40 servings, there will be enough fare on the table that night to feed about 800 people. That should be plenty.

LIDS unveils social media center

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com LIDS unveiled a social media and marketing tool Oct. 25 at its Zionsville headquarters, finalizing the details of the 150,000-square-foot office. ribbon cutting Press Box is a digital command center that tracks social media along with demographics, competitive information and the sentiments of sports teams. A small handful of employees monitor the information about 15 hours a day from the headquarters and react through social media.

“You don’t have to have a room like this to be involved in what’s happening in social media,” said Jeff Pearson, LIDS senior vice president of Ecommerce. “But it makes sure that we understand everything that is going on, and it is very visible to the company.”

The social media command center is powered by Salesforce, which generates the analytics of social media.

“The reason for having the Press Box and the social command center is to take advantage of those (social media) opportunities exactly when they happen,” Pearson said.

“If you wait 30 seconds, 60 seconds, it’s old news. That’s the power of what the Press Box

is going to allow us to do.”

“The Press Box is an opportunity for us to insert ourselves into the conversation around sports,” LIDS President and CEO David Baxter said.

LIDS, which sells officially licensed hats for the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB, carries the sports theme to its headquarters, which has a sports bar and locker room vibe. Inspirational quotes line the hallways, and a digital scoreboard ticker keeps track of the latest scores and schedules in the lobby. Throughout the building television screens broadcast ESPN, and a downstairs cafeteria is eqiupped for employees to play ping pong, pool, video games or foosball.

“People definitely want to work in a place that is fun and rewarding,” Pearson said.

“You’re doing something that is important, but it’s fun and you have fulfillment coming to work. The mix of being able to work hard and being able to play hard and have some fun is important.”

During the behind-the-scenes celebration, LIDS created customizable hats, an option available at 923 of its stores. LIDS is the only company that offers customized stitching that includes the option to add the official autographs of athletes to a hat.

Creekside officially ‘fiber ready’

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Creekside Corporate Park is now officially Fiber Ready, thanks to an investment by AT&T to create infrastructure that town tech officials hope will lure businesses to Zionsville’s office park.

The Fiber Ready Certification was established by AT&T nine months ago to help attract employers to Indiana communities. Creekside Corporate Park is the second business park in Boone County to receive the designation. It is among 10 designated sites across the state.

“The world we live in continues to change,” AT&T Indiana President Bill Soards said. “The way we communicate, the technology which we use to communicate is changing by the hour.

“Fiber optics is becoming the life blood for businesses,” he said, adding that the designation is part of the nearly $2 billion investment made by AT&T in the last three years in fiber optic and broadband networks in Indiana.

Soards, a Zionsville resident, said the fiber was laid at Creekside Corporate Park within the last month and is almost complete.

“It’s infrastructure that you can’t see, but it’s critical,” Soards said.

Foundation launches Run2gether

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Vivian Maley of Zionsville launched the Joseph Maley Foundation after her son lost a battle with leukemia in nonprofit 2008. The nonprofit continues to grow as it seeks to assist people with disabilities.

“When Joseph passed away, we as a family wanted to start a foundation to continue that work, like disability awareness and spreading that through Indianapolis,” said Maley, executive director of the foundation. “Eight years later, we have seven programs under our umbrella. All of them revolve around our mission of serving children (with disabilities).”

One of JMF’s programs is Run2gether, which was born from adaptive running under the JMF fitness program. The Run2gether initiative uses adaptive chair joggers for runners to push those with disabilities in races or relays.

“We want to engage more athletes of all abilities in opportunities and races they might not otherwise be able to do physically,” Maley said. “We were able to purchase some joggers. Each captain has a crew of about two or three people. It’s just a cool relationship between the athlete and the crew. Recently, we

received a $10,000 grant from the OrthoIndy Foundation, and they asked us to come back and apply for another $10,000, so we have money now to purchase a fleet of chairs.”

The Run2gether participants competed in a Back On My Feet relay in October, and they plan on creating a couple different running groups.

“The running community in Indianapolis is huge,” Maley said. “The interest is really catching on.”

Managing prostate cancer Commentary by Clinton D. Bahler, MD, MS, IU Health Physicians Exciting advances in the management of prostate cancer are making it possible for doctors to provide more treatment personalized treatment to men diagnosed with the disease. While prostate cancer screening, which includes the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam, detects many cancers, screening is not always able to tell the difference between slowgrowing tumors, which are common, and more aggressive forms of the disease that can lead to symptoms and death. This has led to overtreatment of prostate cancer in some cases.

Now, through a combination of MRI-guided biopsy and genetic testing, urologists are able to more accurately determine the type of tumor and whether a “watchful waiting” approach is advisable given the presence of slow-growing tumors. Genetic testing also can predict whether the cancer is likely to spread beyond the prostate. Both of these advancements help prevent overtreatment of those prostate cancers that are unlikely to cause death.

For men with more aggressive tumors that

are localized within the prostate, a new minimally invasive method for treating prostate cancer has been recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Pioneered at Indiana University School of Medicine for the localized treatment of prostate cancer, the technique uses high-intensity, focused ultrasound to destroy cancerous tissue with fewer side effects, including lower risk of incontinence and sexual dysfunction, than traditional prostate surgery.

Men between the ages of 50 and 70 should discuss the risks and benefits of PSA screening with their doctor. Those at greater risk of developing prostate cancer, which include African-Americans and men with a family history of the disease, should talk with their primary care doctor about when PSA screening should begin and how often the test should be completed.

For those of you that have read “The Tailgater’s Handbook” (first edition) you might remember this story. While traversing the Big Giver’s Parking Lot at Penn State way back in 1995, a lady hailed us to offer a bowl of her soup. It was life-changing! She called the soup Lost Cheeseburger Soup, and it tasted exactly like a country club cheeseburger. It was beefy, cheesy, chewy and just plain delicious. It was so good and has garnered so many favorable emails and letters from readers of this column and visitors to our website (tailgatershandbook.com) that we feel obligated to rerun this recipe every few years. You may ask, “Why was this soup referred to as lost?”

As was our practice, we asked the lady to send us the recipe and she promised she would, but it never came. When the book went to press we still didn’t have her recipe, even though a whole chapter was planned for the Lost Cheeseburger Soup. Alas, a sumptuous hearty meal we would never taste again!

Several years later a nephew of this woman (Joyce Massetti) emailed us. He was at that infamous tailgate party and read about the lost soup (minus recipe) in the book. He thought to himself, “That was us.” He contacted aunt Joyce and was able to furnish us with her name and the recipe. Hence, we have added this great recipe to our site and write about it often. You need to try this exceptional cold weather soup.

2 cans Campbell’s Cheddar Cheese Soup, 1 can water, salt and pepper.

Preparation: Brown ground beef, drain, then add carrots and onion (chopped). Cook entire mixture until soft and season the mixture to taste with salt and pepper. Add soup and water and heat well.

This soup is great for a substitute for that old favorite, chili. Serve with dill pickle chips and rolls for dipping. Add shredded cheddar cheese to thicken to soup to your liking.

This recipe makes four to six servings and we usually double the recipe.

Loeb to appear at The Warehouse

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com As a big music fan, Lisa Loeb said she knows what concertgoers want to hear.

“I understand when people concerts come to see shows, they want to hear songs they know,” Loeb said. “So I’ll be performing from all my albums. I’ll be playing songs that fans request off my albums. I’ll be playing mostly grownup songs. But I always play a couple of kids’ songs, because it’s really fun.”

Loeb will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 5 at The Warehouse, 254 1st Ave., Carmel. Loeb will play a couple of songs from her new album “Feel What U Feel.”

“It’s a family friendly CD, probably a little more in the kids’ world,” Loeb said. “Everyone will enjoy it, I promise.”

Loeb began to get into children’s music about 10 years ago.

“I had an opportunity to do something different from what I normally do, which is pop, rock and singer-songwriter type of music,” Loeb said. “It wasn’t just for kids, it was for me. When I was growing up in the ‘70s and early ‘80s, there were a lot of things out there for kids. But they had something in it for grownups with humor, cleverness and story-

Miso Halibut with Soba Noodle Stir-Fry Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Ingredients: • 1 package (12 ounces) prepared soba noodles (or noodle of choice) • 4 Alaska halibut fillets (4-6 ounces each), fresh, thawed • 3 tablespoons sesame oil, divided • 2 cups roughly chopped bok choy • 1 1/2 cups sugar snap peas • 1 cup sliced mushrooms • 1/2 cup chopped green onion • 1/4 cup miso • 1 cup water • 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce Directions: Prepare noodles according to package directions; set aside.

Heat large, nonstick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Brush both sides of halibut with half of the sesame oil.

In heated skillet, cook fish, uncovered, about 3-4 minutes, until browned.

Shake pan occasionally to keep fish from sticking. Turn halibut over; reduce heat to medium and cover. Cook 2-3 minutes until fish

In saucepan, blend miso, water and teriyaki sauce. Bring mixture to boil then reduce heat to a simmer and cook 1 minute. Stir sauce into warm noodle-vegetable mixture. To serve, divide and portion mixture into 4 bowls or plates. Top each with halibut fillet.

Commentary by Don Knebel An estimated 10 percent of the important cultural artifacts from 7,000 years of Chinese civilization are owned by a single travel museum. The museum is not in China, and its most visited item is not very old.

Chinese nationalists overthrew the imperial Qing dynasty in 1911. In 1925, the nationalist government confiscated thousands of works of art and cultural artifacts that had been displayed in the palaces of the Qing and earlier dynasties. These items, from bronze and porcelain vessels from the earliest days of Chinese civilization to paintings and imperial government records, were eventually displayed at the Palace Museum in Beijing’s Forbidden City. In 1948, with the Communists threatening, the nationalists moved thousands of crates of objects from the Palace Museum and other important museums to Taiwan, then a Chinese province. about 700,000 items, one percent of which are on display at a time. Among the most important items is “Mao-Gong Ding,” a 3,000-yearold bronze ceremonial caldron, famous for an encouraging message from the emperor to his governor inscribed in 500 ancient Chinese characters on the inside surface. Many visitors walk past the three-legged caldron and other items reflecting the extraordinary creativity and longevity of Chinese civilization, heading instead to the third floor. There they wait in line to file past a seven-inch-long cabbage head, carved in translucent jade, complete

with a locust and a katydid. The intricatelycarved green and white “Jadeite Cabbage” by an unknown sculptor was apparently given by a Qing emperor to his mistress in the late 19th century. It has become the most popular item in the museum’s vast collection.
