Hopper steps down as Zionsville council president

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Elizabeth Hopper has resigned as president of the Zionsville Town Council. Council Vice President Joshua town council Garrett made the announcement at the Oct. 23 morning meeting.

Hopper was arrested Sept. 25 after a Zionsville Police Dept. officer noticed her silver Subaru Crosstrek drive over a sidewalk and curb as it turned westbound on Hunt Club Road from southbound Ford Road in south Zionsville. A chemical test at ZPD showed she had a .221 blood alcohol concentration, which

is more than double the legal limit.

She was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person (Class A misdemeanor), operating a vehicle with an ACE of .15 or more (Class A misdemeanor), operating a vehicle while intoxicated (Class C misdemeanor) and public intoxication (Class Hopper B misdemeanor).

The council voted to appoint Garrett as its new president and Bryan Traylor as its new vice president. Councilors Traylor and Kevin Spees were not present at the meeting.

It was unable to vote on the 2018 budget because of a technicality, but it did approve rezoning for a 6-acre site in The Village and voted to restrict parking in the Colony Woods neighborhood.

What happened: The council expected to vote on its 2018 budget at its meeting Oct. 23, but because of a technicality the vote was delayed.

What it means: Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro told the council that the Dept. of Local Government Finance alerted him that a legal notice advertising public hearings for the budget incorrectly listed Oct. 16 as the date of the second public hearing. Because that fell during fall break, the council announced at its Oct. 2 meeting that the second public hearing would take place Oct. 23 instead. The DLGF, however, said the printed legal notice trumped the public announcement, making the council unable to vote on the matter Oct. 23.

What’s next: The council set the final reading on the budget for 7:30 a.m. Oct. 30.

What it means: The council initiated the rezoning after several proposed developments for the site in recent years fell through.

VBD zoning is more restrictive than B-2 and B-3. It allows commercial development but bans certain uses, such as heavy manufacturing. Attorney Roger Burrus, representing building owner Barbara Hanson-Slaff, said his client was against the change.

What’s next: Burrus said a developer interested in the site is working to determine if the site is still suitable for its plans with the new zoning.

What happened: The council voted 4-1 to approve an ordinance amendment that restricts parking on portions of Williamsburg Lane and Williamsburg Court in the Colony Woods neighborhood between 3 and 5 p.m. on school days.

What it means: Colony Woods residents asked the council to make the amendment because several cars are frequently parked along the affected roads as their drivers wait for students to finish classes at Zionsville Community High School, which is right across the street. One resident spoke in opposition and said several of his neighbors also did not support the change.

What’s next: The ordinance is now in effect. Firsttime violators could face a $10 fine.

What happened: The council approved an amendment to the cash drawer ordinance.

Dispatches Former teacher pleads guilty — Former Zionsville West Middle School teacher Michael Plewa has pleaded guilty to child solicitation. He was arrested in April 2016 for having an inappropriate relationship with a former student that involved sexting. According to the plea agreement, he received a two year sentence with 180 days in community corrections and the balance suspended. He will be on supervised probation for one year and must register as a sex offender. He must also permanently surrender his Indiana teaching license.

Task force appointment – Gov. Eric J. Holcomb has announced the appointments of Zionsville resident Kim Milas to the Task Force for Assessment of Services & Supports for People with Intellectual & Other Developmental Disabilities.

Interstate improvements – A $47 million patching and resurfacing project is under way along I-65 from one mile south of U.S. 52 in Lebanon to nearly 3.5 miles south of State Road 38 in Lafayette. The project also includes replacing the decks on the State Road 47 bridge and on the Tippecanoe County Road 900 and 1000 East bridges over I-65. The project is scheduled to be complete in October 2018.

MetroNet hopes to begin install soon

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com MetroNet has revamped its safety measures and wants to begin installing fiber-optic internet lines in Zionsville soon. town news The Evansville-based, highspeed internet provider halted work in central Indiana in September after the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission found it responsible for 10 out of 20 incidents that damaged gas lines in Carmel and Fishers this summer.

“We think that we went too fast in construction in our desire to provide choice to our customers in Hamilton County,” MetroNet President John Cinelli told the Zionsville Town Council during a special presentation at its Oct. 23 meeting.

MetroNet has not yet begun installing lines in Zionsville, although it has worked on construction of a service building west of Bennett Parkway on Old 106th Street. In February, the town council approved a plan to issue $1.5 million in Indiana Economic Development Revenue Bonds and use tax increment financing to help make it financially feasible for MetroNet to install 300 to 400 miles of lines in town.

Cinelli and MetroNet spokesman Steve Biggerstaff outlined some of the company’s new initiatives, including the creation of a director of cus-

tomer service position, weekly safety committee meetings to discuss utility hits and increased use of water to loosen ground around buried utilities at sites experiencing drought-like conditions.

Biggerstaff said MetroNet is working more closely with municipalities and utility companies than it has in the past. He said work was scheduled to begin again in Westfield Oct. 24 with a construction kickoff meeting. Similar events will be planned as work resumes in other areas, he said.

Councilor Susana Suarez asked MetroNet officials if they had a plan for alerting residents that the company will be digging nearby and suggested they work closely with homeowners associations on notification.

Biggerstaff said MetroNet informs residents of upcoming work through letters, flags and signs and said the company plans to reach out to Zionsville HOAs. “That’s one of the (things) that we wish we would’ve done more of in Fishers,” Biggerstaff said.

Biggerstaff said MetroNet also has updated its website, metronetinc.com, to make it easier for residents to ask questions and find answers.

“Our goal is that we will have no residents calling the town hall and complaining about what we’re doing. Our goal is to answer those questions prior to that,” he said. “We don’t want you to have to field those questions.”

ZIONSVILLE C.R. 400 S./425 S. is closed between C.R. 650 E. and 750 E, as crews work on the 300 S./400 S. connector project in CONSTRUCTION east Whitestown. Two lanes are under construction, although ultimately it is planned to be a four-lane, divided roadway. The project is expected to continue into 2018.

CARMEL A water main upgrade is under way on Range Line Road between City Center and Executive drives. Once the water main is relocated, traffic will move to the inner lanes of Range Line Road for work on the outer lanes. The road will remain open throughout the project.

Cleaning and repainting on Keystone Parkway is underway. Nighttime lane restrictions are occurring between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Daytime restrictions began Oct. 27 and occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Executive Drive and Range Line Road is closed for construction of a roundabout. Construction is expected to last until mid-November.

Gray Road and 126th Street is closed for construction of a roundabout. The project is expected to take 60 days and be open in midNovember, weather permitting.

River Road is closed between 146th Street and Community Drive for a reconstruction project expected to last until Thanksgiving.

Spring Mill Road is closed between 106th and 116th streets. The closure is expected to last through October.

WESTFIELD Construction has begun on the City of Westfield’s Fall Resurfacing and 2017 Trail Connections projects. Fall Resurfacing includes Joliet Road, Catherine Drive, Greyhound Pass from 151st to Western Way, Greyhound Court, the Spring Meadows subdivision and half of the Pine Ridge and Quail Ridge subdivisions.

K-9 Thor will begin public safety his duties with officer Jacob Shelburne after a six-week training course at Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Ind. Thor and Shelburne were among 17 dog and handler teams to recently complete training at Vohne Liche. Many were from the Midwest, but some came from Georgia and Hawaii.

“It’s a lot of work, physically and mentally,” Shelburne said.

Shelburne said the beginning of the program focused on commands before moving into scenario-based training such as detection work, area searches and apprehension.

“Pretty much everything that we would do on the streets we’re doing in these six weeks,” Shelburne said.

Thor is being trained in narcotics and explosives detection, tracking and searching and will be used as a full-service K-9 in Zionsville. He wears different collars and equipment, depending on the job he’s expected to perform.

Shelburne said he’s also spent the last several weeks bonding with Thor.

“They’ll do anything for you once they attach to you,” Shelburne said.

Thor was brought to Vohne Liche from the Netherlands, and his commands are primarily given in Dutch. The 2-year-old Belgian Malinois is the same breed as the other ZPD K-9, Jelka. The dogs will work alternating shifts, so they won’t regularly cross paths.

Thor replaces Eso, a canine who retired this summer because of health issues.

The Boone County Solid Waste Management District is sponsoring the sixth annual event, which is a juried art and fine craft show promoting recycling, reusing and reclaiming of post-consumer goods.

“It is the first year it is under the Boone County Solid Waste Management District’s umbrella,” said Jennifer Lawrence, BCSWMD executive director. “We have been a part of the committee for the previous events.”

ZCS OKs $90.2M in ‘18 budget Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees met Oct. 23 to approve the 2018 budget, review district enrollment and hear a presentation from the Zionsville Century Club.

What happened: The board approved the 2018 budget.

What it means: The budget that ZCS will submit to the Dept. of Local Government finance for review tops out at $90.2 million with a 1.68 tax rate. ZCS Chief Financial Officer Mike Shafer said that the district expects DLGF to approve the ZCS budget at $80 million with a tax rate of approximately $1.30, leaving it essentially unchanged from the current rate.

What’s next: The DLGF will review the budget.

What happened: ZCS Chief Operations Officer Rebecca Coffman presented the annual student enrollment report.

What it means: ZCS enrollment has increased by 191 students since last year, with the total number of students at 6,868. Since the 2016 report, 303 students moved out of the district and 501 moved into it. No core classes have more than 35 students.

What happened: Duane Canfield of the Zionsville Century Club gave a presentation about the organization’s $10,400 gift to the Zionsville Community High School Best Buddies program.

What it means: The Century Club meets quarterly to select a program to support with donations from its members. Most recently it selected Best Buddies, a club that promotes friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Turkey Foot Road: Not a grave situation

At the corner of Mulberry Street and Turkey Foot Road sit three headstones. Beyond the stones, behind a headstones fence, are three larger cemetery stones.

The name John L. McCracken is the only one legible. But McCracken is buried in Indianapolis. As far as anyone can tell, he never lived in Zionsville.

So how did these gravestones appear in Boone County?

The home’s original owner, Eugene Pock, was a heavy machine operator who moved old headstones and gravestones and replaced them with new ones. He was allowed to keep the discarded stones, so he used them as backfill for the steep slope by his house.

The house was eventually passed along to his granddaughter, Jennifer Kelshaw, who lives there with her husband Gary Kelshaw.

said the stones have stopped at least eight cars since they were added.

One motorcyclist decades ago wasn’t so lucky and was fatally injured after crashing into the side of the house when Pock lived there, according to Kelshaw. Several boulders were put into the yard after that accident.

The smaller headstones were discovered by pipeline workers several years ago while digging on the property. They stopped their work in a panic.

“They got scared,” Kelshaw said.

Kelshaw doesn’t know how many other stones might be lying beneath the earth, but Pock’s son told him the yard is filled with them.

“I don’t know how many more we can find down there,” Kelshaw said.

Many curious people have knocked on his door to ask about the headstones, often nervous that there are bodies buried at the corner.

“No, we don’t have people buried here,” he said.

A ‘Strange Journey’

Zionsville pastor co-authors book exploring mysteries of Catholicism

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com What do you get when you cross an author who writes memoirs and devotionals with one who writes paranormal fiction and cover story travel essays? The subtitle of their new book says it all: “How Two Homesick Pilgrims Stumbled Back into the Catholic Church.”

“Strange Journey,” co-authored

by Jonathan (Ryan) Weyer, a former Presbyterian minister, and Jessica Mesman Griffith, who has a master’s of fine arts degree in creative writing, will be released Nov. 1 by Loyola Press. A book launch party Griffith featuring a short reading from the book, panel discussion and book signing is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at Saint Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church in Zionsville, where Weyer is the pastoral associate of evangelization.

“Basically, we want to recover the mysterious and uncanny nature of Catholicism. Too many times, people in the church try to make it an easy-to-follow formula, a rule book, ‘Do this, don’t do that and follow these steps, and everything will be great,’” said Weyer, 43, who writes as Jonathan Ryan (his middle name). “As if 2,000 years of beauty, truth and strangeness can be distilled into a self-help book for harried people. Reality is much more complex, difficult, beautiful and heart-breaking.”

“Strange Journey” begins during Advent and progresses through the liturgical year. It covers feast days, celebrations of the saints and other observances, with personal stories describing how the authors have been drawn deeper into the church in pursuit of the mystery of faith.

Because of the book’s structure, the authors didn’t sit down to write the book together or take turns writing chapters.

“We mapped out the story we wanted to tell in advance, according to our favorite Catholic holy days, and then we each wrote our parts separately,” Griffith, 40, said. “When we put them together in the final draft, we were surprised and happy to see how well the puzzle pieces fit.”

Because the co-authors have such different styles, Weyer doesn’t believe they could have written the book any other way.

“We both played different parts of the song and they just fit,” said Weyer, a Zionsville resident. “Jessica is a beautiful, artistic writer, and I tend to be more of a storyteller.”

It’s not the first time the two have worked together. They co-founded the spiritual blog “Sick Pilgrim,” winner of the 2017 Wilber Award for Best Faith-based blog, and the “Wonder Podcast.” “‘Sick Pilgrim’ is more than just our blog. It’s become a spiritual community for artists and seekers to support and inspire each other on the journey,” said Griffith, who lives in New Palestine. “That’s really important to me, to give artists and other people, who often feel Weyer they don’t fit in a way to be in the church, to keep the faith.”

“We were floored to discover so many others who loved the things we loved. So many people are hungry for magic, for enchantment, for a place to revel in the joy and weirdness of faith without the pressure to be perfect,” Weyer said. “It was like opening a hospital door for all the spiritually wounded to come in and rest.”

But for those expecting “Strange Journey” to be a book about rebellion, they may be surprised to find it focuses more on renewal.

“The church can often get seduced by power, money and control instead of truth, beauty and love,” Weyer said. “And, as a faithful son of the church, I wanted to tell people my story with the hope they would see the mystery of faith is far more attractive than a half-baked program that will quickly become obsolete.”

What message do Weyer and Griffith want readers take away from “Strange Journey”?

“All of our spiritual journeys are strange and take many twisted turns. We’re both Catholic because it is strange, it is unsettling and it does take a lifetime to learn, to grow, to heal and become whole,” Weyer said. “Our journeys aren’t over. It’s a process of opening doors only to discover a room full of more doors. That can be frustrating. It can also be comforting. We aren’t expected to get it right all the time. God is mercy.”

Commentary by Terry Anker We found ourselves careening down the crowded streets of America’s largest city, New York, reviewing the events of the day – the nature of the incoming flight, the ease of traversing the Holland Tunnel, and, in course, our acquaintance with a new car service. Recommended for transport by a close friend and Manhattanite, we were impressed by the comportment and wayfinding of our driver. Snarled traffic would lead to a redirect, then another, until a more attractive path emerged.

Although the crystal-blue sky was glorious as the October sun cast its reflected light across the scores of gleaming edifices, we found ourselves headlong in a narrow canyon of oppressive brick structures.

Built before the ubiquitous use of reinforced steel, these vintage buildings, while charming in many ways, hosted small windows open only to facing windows directly across the constricted street. Despite the ambient light spilling into the scene, the effect could best be described as dusk. The same might be said as afternoon turned to night, street lights illuminate ensuring that folks rooted here live lives wrapped in perpetual twilight.

If we dedicate ourselves only working to contain the extremes, what do we surrender? Are we humans prone to avoid change at the very same time that we benefit from it? Some moments lift us while others urge us to retreat. Does our hiding from dark and light make its existence any less real?

Life brings both expected and unexpected seasons. But what is the merit in a command of adaptability? If we live in a place that is neither fully day nor fully night, can we ever hope to recognize the difference?

Should’ve saved that Coke bottle Commentary by Ward Degler There is an un-opened 1950s vintage bottle of Coca-Cola for sale on eBay. The last asking price I saw was $9,000.

I’m trying to get my plain talk head around that. When that bottle popped out of the vending machine in 1950, it cost a nickel. More ludicrous still, when you returned the empty bottle, you got your nickel back.

Most soft drinks come in aluminum cans today, a trend that kicked into high gear in the 1960s as a cost-effective alternative.

But back in the day, soda came in bottles. RC, Pepsi, 7 Up, Dr Pepper and most other brands came in straight-sided bottles, distinguished from one another only by the logo on the bottle.

Coke was different. Its bottles were contour shaped. In 1915, the call went out to glass bottle manufacturers to come up with a new design for Coca-Cola bottles, something that would set Coke apart.

The Root Glass Company of Terre Haute was declared the winner with a contourshaped bottle of green glass. The new bottle went on the market in 1916.

For the next decade or so, Root Glass

mined some 20,000 tons of sandstone annually from the banks of the Wabash River in Putnam County. The sand contained a high copper content, which translated to green glass.

Coke became fiercely protective of its new bottle. The shape was patented and manufacturing lots were numbered. Bottles remained the property of Coca-Cola, and some were stamped, “Not for Sale,” and “Must be Returned” on the bottom.

Root Glass went out of business in 1932. The Coke bottle business spread to glassworks around the globe. Each city stamped the bottom of its bottles.

A friend and I used to take a daily Coke break. We’d put our nickels in the machine and then we’d bet another nickel on the bottle. We’d check the city name on the bottom, and whichever bottle came from the farthest away was the winner.

Now a bottle of Coke is worth $9,000.

I’m cured of my urinating-while-exercising problem! Thanks to my OB/GYN, I can now run without stopping at humor construction port-a-lets every 2 miles. And luckily for you, the appointment was the most entertaining, embarrassing hour of my adult life.

FYI, any visit to the Lady Parts Doctor requires great preparation. There’s a particularly high level of grooming that occurs, from perfectly-pedicured toes to a meticulously-made-up face. And of course, everything in between must be en pointe.

For whatever reason, I completely neglected the aforementioned routine and showed up a hot mess. When the nurse told me to undress from the waist down, I was mortified. Did I mention I have a male physician?

Who’s my age?

I commenced with the “He’s seen it all” mantra, but broke into a cold sweat when I caught a whiff of my Sperry’s-withoutsocks feet. I forgot all of this the moment Doc walked in, though, because I then had to explain in excruciating detail my peejogging adventures. We discussed possible solutions and finally agreed to try a nonsurgical device. Doc then opened a tacklebox full of what appeared to be medieval torture objects, selected one, and told me to “give it a whirl.” In privacy, thank God. So I jumped, danced, moved and grooved to see if I could wet myself. Miracle of miracles, the floor remained dry!

Step 2 proved more challenging. Try as I might, I just couldn’t remove the thing. So Doc returned, hilariously mimed the process, and left me again. This time, with a few Cirque du Soleil twists and a Hail Mary, I did it.

Standing up for lunch Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Now that Mary Ellen has retired, and I’m significantly cutting back on work, we’ll end up being home together humor around noon. Mary Ellen and I have never shared a real lunchtime. For all of our marriage, we weren’t ever both home during the workweek, and on weekends I usually went to Costco and snarfed up free food samples. I have been home recovering from knee surgery, so Mary Ellen suggested we start having a noon meal together. The blood drained out of my head. I started to perspire. A twitch developed in my right eye. I had to be careful or she was going to know that I was not happy with the suggestion.

How do you tell someone after 37 years that you really don’t want to have lunch together? When you are used to eating alone, you develop a few habits that will be hard to break. My wife, who shares a significant DNA strain with Miss Manners, would never understand. Maybe you will.

Mary Ellen will want to have lunch at noon. When I worked at home alone, I would sit down for lunch sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Wait, that is

a total lie. I have never actually sat down for lunch at home in my adult life. I slapped a sandwich together while standing at the fridge, then ate it on the way upstairs to turn on a cable news show.

I just knew that Mary Ellen was going to want to actually sit for the meal. And we’d have to use utensils, like forks and spoons. And have conversations. I even had nightmares about it. I love my wife, and I love to talk to her. But not in the daylight.

Not during the week. Conversations are OK at dinner; so are napkins, utensils and chairs. But not at lunch. Not starting after 37 years.

The other day, Mary Ellen prepared a meal at noon. When I walked in the kitchen, she said, “I can’t believe what you are wearing. Sweats and a dirty T-shirt? You can’t sit down for lunch looking like that.�

Music to my ears. So I stood up, just like the good old days.

Open your trash bin to throw in a bag and you might be greeted with an “aromatic” scent. Trying to clean it new biz alone can be time-consuming and leave a mess of its own.

Now, two friends have teamed up to provide a unique service, transforming trash bins from grimy to glowing.

Bin Cleanse is an eco-friendly trash bin cleaning serving Zionsville and surrounding areas started by Dan Poore and Mike Mattingly. The service has been popular overseas but is just now gaining popularity in the U.S. Although there are a few independent owners in places such as Florida, California and Texas, it’s just now taking hold in the Midwest.

“After doing extensive research, we realized there was a great need for Bin Cleanse,” Poore said. “Many (homeowner associations) mandate residents keep their bins in their garage, and not only is the smell horrific, but they can harbor germs and attract rodents.”

The company uses an automated truck similar to trash services that grabs the

“We use eco-friendly chemicals for our cleaning and 200-degree heated water to kill all the germs and disease inside the bins,” Mattingly said. “It captures all of the gray, dirty water that results from the bins being cleaned. We then dispose of the water at a designated treatment facility.”

The 74-year-old Carmel resident has been collecting U.S. stamps since he was 7 years old.

“I go back to the 1800s for U.S. stamps,” said Swartz, a former pastor of Carmel’s King of Glory Lutheran Church. “I view every stamp as a window to the world. It’s lifting up either a person, a building or a circumstance.”

Swartz, who serves as a volunteer usher at The Palladium along with his wife, Betty, had mentioned to Indiana Wind Symphony Director Charlie Conrad a couple of years ago the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation and the great music around that time.

“I knew his love for putting together thematic concerts,” Swartz said.

They began planning together, and Swartz will give a historical narration for the symphony’s “Echoes Over Five Centuries: The Reformation” at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at The Palladium in Carmel.

“I’ve always been a fan of church music and classical music,” Swartz said.

Conrad said Swartz brings a great deal of knowledge about the Reformation.

“In addition to the religious aspect, it had quite an effect on music as well,” Conrad said. “Paul will be doing the narration in between numbers. We’ll play some music that historically was significant, and some based on some of the chorales and tunes that came from the time. We’re doing a piece from Elisabeth Cruciger, the first female hymn writer of the Reformation, and she was also married to Martin Luther’s son. Martin Luther wrote several (hymns) himself. ‘A Mighty Fortress is Our God’ is the most famous one.”

Swartz, who will have a display of his Reformation and Luther stamps in The Palladium lobby, is writing a book called “A Life Stamped, Cancelled and Delivered!”

“I thought if I don’t get the book out until next year I can include all the stamps of Luther that are issued this year,” said Swartz, who has written several journal articles about Luther.

Swartz was pastor of King of Glory Lutheran Church for 13 years before retiring in 2012. He’s now serving at First Trinity, a diverse Lutheran congregation on the east side

“They can’t afford a pastor, so I’m helping them out,” Swartz said.

Swartz’s collection of Martin Luther stamps began in 1983 when the U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp commemorating the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s birth on Nov. 10, 1483. The stamp triggered a worldwide search by Swartz to discover what other Reformation stamps were produced. He has several albums full of stamps relating to Martin Luther or this year’s Reformation anniversary.

Luther published his Ninety-five theses, or complaints against the Catholic Church, and launched the Protestant Reformation on Oct. 31, 1517. Many stamps from various nations are being reeled this year.

“Luther was the champion of individual rights and the freedom of the conscience,” Swartz said. “You won’t find anyone in the history of mankind who championed that more than Martin Luther.”

Songbook Foundation launches Meredith Willson website editorial@youarecurrent.com The Carmel-based Great American Songbook Foundation recently launched a website showcasing the archives of composer and playwright Meredith Willson, who wrote Broadway and cinema hits “The Music Man” and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.”

The Meredith Willson Digital Collection makes a trove of historic materials accessible worldwide to researchers, musicians and fans of Willson, who also penned such popular songs as “You and I” and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.”

The collection is a collaboration between the Songbook Foundation and HistoryIT, a digital history company that helps organizations transform their archives into engaging online collections. HistoryIT team members, while working with the foundation staff, identified a representative sample of compositions, scrapbooks, correspondence and photographs from Willson’s career, then digitized and tagged the materials for display on a search-optimized website.

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com When “A Grand Night of Singing” opened on Broadway in 1993, it was the first time the music of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein had been on theater Broadway in a revue format.

“It has been speculated that one reason for the delay was that so many Rodgers and Hammerstein songs connect so directly with the stories they tell and are so embedded in our culture that it becomes difficult to envision them out of the context,” said Carol Worcel, who is serving as director and choreographer for the show for the upcoming Actors Theatre of Indiana’s production. “Perhaps another reason is that these classic tunes sometimes seem sappy and out of touch with the edgy realism today’s audiences so often expect.”

However, Worcel said the arrangement of 30 or more songs by Walter Bobbie creates a “brilliant format that follows the timeless seasons of love, using themes which we can all identify.”

Worcel, who lives near the Geist area in Indianapolis, said there have been no real challenges in preparation.

‘In fact, this rehearsal period has been very smooth due to the fact that we have an amazingly talented cast and a very accomplished production team,” Worcel said.

Worcel said there is an even mix of songs from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s betterknown and lesser-known musicals.

“Honey Bun is one of my favorites in this production,” Worcel said.

Springfield to play Palladium

By Lana Bandy editorial@youarecurrent.com Don’t be surprised if Rick Springfield seems a bit nostalgic when he hits The Palladium stage Nov. live music 5 in Carmel. It seems Indiana holds a special place in the musician’s heart.

“It was one of the first solo shows I ever did, so I dig it for that reason alone,” Springfield said. “We didn’t know what the reaction would be, but Indianapolis stood up and said, ‘We’ll book that show,’ so it’s very cool.”

The show is the Australian rocker’s stripped down solo acoustic performance in which Springfield shares the stories behind his songs. After 40-plus years as a musician, actor and author, he recently told Current that audiences can expect to hear some popular gems.

Q: What can fans expect that night?

A: Expect the best, but be prepared for the worst. Wait...no, that’s North Korea, not my solo show. The solo show is very personal and intimate and it’s a lot of spontaneous stuff, so it’s a lot of fun for me, and, I hope, for the audience.

Bullying in our schools has become a national epidemic and, unfortunately, this is probably the most common phone call I get from parents. Usually it goes something like this: “My child is being bullied to the point that he’s afraid to go to school. The school has not done anything to stop it. What can I do?”

Naturally, many parents who call want me to write a letter to their school corporation or even file a lawsuit against it. Unfortunately, I often have to tell them that there’s not much they can do from a legal standpoint unless they have evidence that (a) the school violated a legal duty, and (b) their child has been harmed—physically or psychologically—as a result. If your child is simply afraid to go to school because of the bullying but hasn’t been emotionally traumatized or physically injured, it will be difficult to bring a legal claim against the school district because the law requires you to prove damages in order to have a case. Being nervous, scared or uncomfortable at school may not be enough to support a legal claim. As the saying goes, “They don’t make Band-Aids for hurt feelings.”

Schools have a duty to protect your child from bullying, but often they look the other way or downplay it, telling parents “Kids will be kids.”

They don’t seem to take bullying seriously and rarely punish the perpetrators severely. I have represented several children who have been bullied, assaulted or sexually harassed at school—one to the point of committing suicide. In almost every case, the school could have done more to prevent the bullying from happening.

Indiana does have an anti-bullying law, but it’s not very strong. It only requires schools to have an anti-bullying policy and to report bullying

incidents to a database. But schools routinely under-report incidents of bullying and many parents mistakenly assume that they can sue a school if it does not follow this law, which says you can’t sue the school based only on its failure to follow the statute. In fact, if the school doesn’t comply with the statute, its non-compliance is not even admissible in court.

If your child has been harmed, it may still be possible to hold the school responsible in a lawsuit. I’ve used different legal theories against schools where students have been bullied. Schools have a duty to supervise students, to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition and to protect students from reasonably foreseeable criminal acts—which bullying incidents often are. Students with special needs may have additional remedies available.

My advice to parents whose children are being bullied is to document every incident (who, what, when, where). You can tell school staff what’s happening in person or over the phone, but it’s a good idea to put it in an email to your child’s principal, teacher and guidance counselor.

Make a paper trail. Doing so makes it harder for the school to claim that it was unaware of the bullying. If your child is emotionally or physically harmed, you’ll want to show that the school knew or should have known that he was at risk of being injured. Schools like to defend these cases by arguing that the harm was not “reasonably foreseeable,” so telling school employees that your child is being bullied is important. Do not assume that the school will document the bullying properly—do it for them. When kids are hurt at school and parents bring a claim, evidence has a way of mysteriously disappearing. By sending the school staff emails, you will have proof that they knew your child was being bullied.

A master bathroom makeover Commentary by Randy Sorrell Here are more questions from the desk of Randy Sorrell, proprietor of Surroundings, in the Indiana remodeling Design Center.

Q. We intend to remodel our master bathroom this winter but are having a difficult time visualizing the final product. Any suggestions?

A. This is a common thought. Fortunately, there are a variety of tools to help you imagine what your bathroom (or kitchen, lower level, patio, etc.) will look like. A great place to start is by touring a few of the suppliers to gather inspiration. We like Jack Laurie and Ferguson in the Indiana Design Center. The Tile Shop and Lee Supply have wonderful vignettes, too. Spend time on Houzz and Pinterest and you will likely discover a few bathrooms with very similar layouts as yours. From there, it’s pretty easy to imagine your new space!

However, the most powerful method of visualizing is with a 3-D design. It can really bring your space to life with the actual paint colors, tile and vanities that you hope to use.

Q. How long should we expect for the project to take?

A. Most master bathroom projects will require four to six weeks, especially with a tile shower and new floors.

Q. Can we use our existing mirror? It’s in great shape and is frameless.

A. Certainly, you can. The greater question is, should you? If everything else has been updated but the mirror, it could be a little obvious. We will often keep existing mirrors, the toilet and a few other items when the project is more of a facelift.

Wall Street Goes Hi-Tech

Over the past several decades investors have seen “once-in-ageneration” market events taking place every few years. These erratic market movements are the result of a fundamental change that has occurred in the nature of the stock market. The catalyst for the change?

Improving technology over the past two decades has dramatically improved the speed and efficiency with which institutional investors (hedge funds, pensions, endowments, sovereign wealth funds, etc.) are able to move vast sums of money in and out of securities. Computers now trade with one another instantly and anonymously, allowing even the largest investors to sell positions rapidly. The stock market’s increased long-run volatility is the unintended consequences of this change.

We believe that the rise of computer-driven trading has caused the stock market to become increasingly susceptible to a “feedback-loop crash”, where automated selling generates more automated selling and sends indexes plunging. Barron’s magazine is also ringing the alarm bells. It warned in its cover story on Oct. 16th, that assets being run by computer driven “quantitative strategies” have nearly doubled since 2007 and now total nearly 1 trillion dollars. The Arch of Constantine Commentary by Don Knebel The Arch of Constantine, near the Coliseum in Rome, memorializes an event that changed the direction of Western history.

On Oct. 28, 312 A.D., Roman travel Emperor Constantine I defeated rival Emperor Maxentius in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, thereby gaining unquestioned control of the Western Roman Empire. Constantine credited his victory to a vision in which the Christian God told him to put the superimposed Greek letters Chi and Rho, symbolizing the Christ, on his soldiers’ shields. In 313 A.D., Constantine, joined by the Eastern Emperor, issued the Edict of Milan, ending the persecution of Christians and making Christianity legal throughout the Roman Empire.

In 315 A.D., the 10th year of Constantine’s reign, the Roman Senate erected a massive arch honoring his victory at the Milvian Bridge. The three-portal arch, more than 82 feet wide and 65 feet high, straddled the Triumphal Way, the route by which the victorious Constantine had entered Rome, displaying the head of Maxentius. Identical inscriptions on either side near the top of

the arch attributed Constantine’s victory to the inspiration of a singular “divine,” suggesting that Constantine wanted to affirm his belief in one God while not offending Romans still believing in mulitple gods.

Curiously, the arch uses statues and reliefs from monuments honoring earlier rulers.

Even the carvings depicting Constantine, some showing a halo around his head, were re-worked from earlier carvings.

Some speculate this reclamation was necessary because fourth century Romans had lost the skill to create great works of art.

Others believe the re-use communicated the idea that Constantine was the epitome of earlier leaders.

The Arch of Constantine is the last and largest Roman arch, inspiring, among others, the Arc d ’Triumph in Paris and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The halo around the head of Constantine inspired later depictions of Jesus.

A grammar horror story Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt On days like this, kids in costumes aren’t the only spooky things in the neighborhood. Did you know grammar guy commas can save innocent lives? I wanted to avoid controversial subjects like killing in this column, but here we are discussing the only two certainties in life: death and punctuation.

In today’s article, I’m going to settle the Oxford comma debate once and for all.

How’s that for a bold statement?

Suppose I wanted to list a few (three, to be precise) of my favorite things. I could say: I like eating, children and small animals. That was intended to read as a list of three things–not a list of one thing followed by examples (although I’ve heard squirrel bacon is excellent!). Most people think the Oxford comma (a.k.a. the serial, series or Harvard comma) is at odds with the AP Stylebook. I’m not sure if this will come as a trick or a treat to you, but the AP Stylebook actually makes clear that it’s perfectly appropriate to use an Oxford comma when doing so helps to avoid confusion or misinterpretation.

My general rule is: use commas sparingly. Pretend they’re shotgun shells and

you’re trying to survive in a zombie apocalypse. According to AP, “If a comma doesn’t help make clear what is being said, don’t use it.” I love secretly eating my child’s Skittles, Milky Ways and Butterfingers once he’s asleep. This sentence doesn’t need a comma after “Milky Ways” because it doesn’t provide further clarity in the sentence’s meaning, nor does it lead to misinterpretation.

Hopefully, this nuanced take on the comma controversy provides a diacritical middle ground for the two feuding punctuation parties. I’m not naive enough to assume I will be able to change anyone’s mind on a polarizing topic such as this; I merely wanted to illustrate how two opposing factions can (theoretically) peacefully coexist.

I know, I know you probably think this is a not-so-subtle way of addressing the ageold rivalry between vampires and werewolves. For the record, you are correct. I believe in a world in which vampires and werewolves can – and do – get along.
