Plan Commission approves industrial buildings, Pulte development Compiled by Sara Baldwin Schatz • sara@youarecurrent.com What happened: The commission unanimously approved a development plan amendment to demolish the existing structure at 700 Mulberry St., where Zionsville Community Schools plans to build an employee clinic and student service center.

What it means: The existing residence, a home which has been vacant for several years, will be demolished. An 8,200-square-foot building will be constructed in its place. The building will house a St. Vincent Wellness Center for ZCS employees, the school’s Food Service Dept. offices as well as child care services. Andrew Wert, land use professional at Church, Church, Hittle & Antrim law offices, represented ZCS at the meeting.

“In developing these plans, our team was very mindful of the residential neighborhood to the east, Pine Meadows,” Wert said.

Kathy Gilbert, a Pine Meadow resident, spoke in favor of the development.

“We’re just here in support of this entire project,” Gilbert said. “The school system has been absolutely delightful to work with.”

Access will be from the Zionsville Community High School campus to the west. The builders plan to preserve as many of the mature trees as possible. Residential elements, such as a pitched, shingled roof, will be included in the plans to help keep the residential feel.

What’s next: Specific building plans require approval before construction of the project can begin.

What happened: The commission passed a re-zoning of approximately 73 acres at 4250 S. SR 267 from agriculture to light industrial zoning.

What it means: The property, owned by Jig Farms LLC, borders already developed industrial facilities and residential homes. The developer, VanTrust Real Estate LLC, has not specified tenants but plans to build two separate distribution facilities, one 200,000 square feet and the other 700,000 square feet. Plans also include a privacy fence and sound-buffering mechanisms.

Craig Triscari, a resident of the Saratoga neighborhood which backs up to the area, spoke on behalf of neighboring families, saying that they would be less averse to retail development but do not want industrial development.

“It is literally right on top of residential homes,” Triscari said. “The community in general is not in support of an industrial area.”

Because of the distance between the facilities and neighboring homes, two berms, a pond and landscaping were added to the plan. Attorney Matt Price, representing the developer, said it is the best compromise for the area.

What’s next: Specific building plans will be proposed and presented to the Plan Commission.

What happened: Nearly 60 acres owned by the State Bank of Lizton at 8602 E. 500 South, the site which was originally proposed for the Little League regional headquarters, was approved to become the site of a 78-lot Pulte Homes subdivision.

What it means: Members of Zionsville’s Plan Commission and several Zionsville residents debated for nearly two hours about the plans.

Kevin Schiferl, owner of a neighboring home, publicly called into question the ability of one Plan Commission member, Michael Rinebold, to be impartial because of his previous involvement with the Little League development. It was decided that Rinebold was in compliance with commission rules and was allowed to vote.

The area, at the southwest corner of CR 500 and 875 E., was annexed and rezoned in 2008 and has undergone multiple development proposals. Nine community members who live nearby asked that Pulte consider building less homes on the area, citing water pressure and drainage issues and concerns that the homes will not blend aesthetically with the rest of the area.

Vicki Westbrook, who lives on 550 South, which backs up to the development, said, “My question to Pulte is, ‘Why not build less homes?’

You could do 20 less homes to make it a nicer neighborhood with larger lot sizes.”

Michael Lyons, also a resident of 500 South, said he has a legally approved shooting range in his backyard and is concerned about safety if homes are built behind him.

Price said the proposed buffer and home setbacks will provide enough space between the development and neighboring homes.

The plans passed with a 4-2 approval.

What’s next: Plans for the development will go before the Zionsville Town Council for approval.

A Whitestown man, 44-year-old David Blackburn, has been charged with battery for allegCRIME edly leaving marks on his 6-year-old daughter after spanking her between 50 and 100 times.

According to court documents, the girl’s mother, Stephanie Grow, said she was Blackburn attempting to give the child her medicine Oct. 9 but the child would not listen to commands.

Grow woke up her husband, Blackburn, to get their daughter to take the medication. Grow said the couple had discussed discipline the night before.

Grow said Blackburn then attempted to get the girl to take her medication. When she would not listen, Blackburn allegedly spanked his daughter approximately 50 to 100 times. Grow stated she was making breakfast while he was handling the punishment.

Grow allegedly asked her husband three times to stop spanking the girl, but he said, “No, we have to get a hold on her,” according to the documents.

After finally getting Blackburn to stop the spanking, Grow noticed that her daughter’s pull-up was askew.

When she looked closer she saw bruising and red marks on the girl.

Blackburn and Grow allegedly argued about the discipline. She packed her belongings and left the house with her daugher.

She then took the girl to the hospital due to the extent of the injuries.

Hospital staff informed police and the Dept. of Child Services.

Blackburn was taken into custody at his home and police say he admitted to spanking the girl up to 25 times, at times with the pull-up removed. He has since been released from custody.

Parks Dept. maintains graves

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Tucked within subdivisions or the middle of fields, several small cemeteries dot Zionsville’s landscape TOWN HISTORY as traces of families who once called Boone County home.

The sites, known as pioneer cemeteries, were created as family plots by some of Indiana’s first settlers.

The Zionsville Parks Dept. maintains eight of the cemeteries, mowing and checking headstones for cracks. Eagle Village off Michigan Road is one of the larger ones.

“Many are on private property, and townships aren’t involved at all with those,” said Matt Dickey, Zionsville Parks Dept. director.

The small cemeteries established before 1939 that are not privately owned or maintained by organizations and are maintained by taxpayer money.

Larger cemeteries, such as Zionsville Cemetery, are privately owned and maintained. Other small cemeteries on private land are the responsibility of the

On Oct. 2, Zionsville Postmaster General Paul Chaffee spoke to Union Elementary’s second-grade class about the U.S. Postal Service. He also swore in the students as honorary mail carriers. The second-grade class is responsible for collecting, sorting and delivering mail twice a week through an in-school mail service called Union Express.

The program is designed to teach students how to use the postal service. It also serves as a way for teachers and parents to correspond with students and students to correspond with their classmates. As part of the program, Union Elementary second-graders participate in a stamp design contest. At the Oct. 2 ceremony, six students were awarded plaques for their Union Express stamp designs and were given $10 Target gift cards.

Remembering conservationists Commentary by Ward Degler Let me tell you about the wife of an old friend of mine. The friend was Jim Keefe. His wife was Doris, but everyone called her Dink.

For many years, Jim PLAIN TALK directed the Information Dept. of the Missouri Conservation Commission. He was the voice of purpose and common sense about all things pertaining to hunting, fishing, soil, forest and water conservation in the state.

Dink was a stay-at-home mom who raised four kids. By her own admission, she cleaned house when company was coming and did laundry when the kids needed clean socks.

At the same time, Dink had a keen eye for important issues.

Such an issue came up in 1975 when the Missouri Conservation Federation tackled the enormous task of rallying folks to sign petitions asking the state legislature to place a sales tax referendum on the ballot for the following year’s election.

The problem was, the federation had one employee, and he was charged with being everywhere at once, giving speeches, recruiting volunteers and making sure the

campaign kept a full head of steam. That meant there was nobody to man the office, the phones, the filing and the myriad other administrative tasks.

That’s when Dink stepped in. For one full year, she worked eight hours a day for no pay to keep the project on track. When the measure was approved by the voters, she quietly closed up the office and went back home to her stay-at-home routine.

Jim Keefe, meanwhile, created awardwinning conservation videos, rallied for common sense conservation programs and created a legacy of sound conservation measures that serves today as a model for the entire nation. The Conservation Sales Tax generates $80 million each year, enough to fully fund state parks and soil and water conservation programs.

When Jim died a few years ago, he was inducted into the Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame. Dink had already been a member for several years.

Zionsville cartoonist and author Rob Harrell will present his three-part series, “The Life of Zarf,” at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 15 EVENT at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library. The event will include bingo, jousting, a drawing and a book signing.

“The Life of Zarf” is the story of a troll named Zarf and his two best friends who know how to make Harrell the most of life at the bottom of the school hierarchy.

“Trolls are kind of the ultimate underdog.

Nobody likes trolls. They’re usually the bad guys,” Harrell said. “And even the classic illustrations are so ugly and demeaning. I thought life in middle school would be particularly rough for a troll.”

According to Harrell, the idea for “The Life of Zarf” just popped into his mind.

“Working in a fairy tale world gave me a lot of inside jokes with the reader, like the idea of having the grown-up Goldilocks be the lunch lady because she knows her way

around a bowl of porridge,” Harrell said.

CONSTRUCTION ZIONSVILLE/WHITESTOWN The new stair system in Starkey Park is under construction. Trail-goers should stay off Trail SP-1 between the parking lot and the trail’s intersection with SP-2. This area is fenced off so that trail users cannot access this section of trail. The work is estimated, weather pending, to be complete by the end of November.

During the next few weeks, the Zionsville Wastewater Dept. will be replacing undersized sanitary sewer lines in two alleys: between Poplar Street and Cedar Street from 2nd Street to 6th Street, and on Locust Street between 1st and 4th Streets. Work was scheduled to begin Oct. 22 on Locust Street. The contractor will work with property owners and residents as much as possible to minimize impact of this construction.

There will be limited access to alleyways during active construction. This project is part of the Town of Zionsville Wastewater Dept.’s commitment to ensure that the town’s collection system and wastewater plant operate optimally in order to provide the community a properly treated effluent from the plant. The areas were scheduled in this year’s Sewer Rehab Program.

WESTFIELD A traffic signal will be constructed at Ind. 32 and Ditch Road. Utility relocations are expected to begin this fall and turn lanes will be added next spring. The traffic signal should be complete by summer 2019. No road closures are anticipated for the early construction plans such as utility relocation.

The Towne Road Improvement Project has begun, and Towne Road is closed to thru traffic from 156th Street to 161st Street. The project should be finished this month. Three box culverts will be replaced and new ditches will be cut to facilitate better roadside drainage. Each travel lane will be widened by 2 feet and grade adjustments along the road will improve line of sight.

As part of a federally funded project to improve safety, lighting will be added to 20 intersections throughout the city. The project will be complete in February 2019, and so far, no road closures have been announced.

Since 1972, King has worked on political campaigns and offered governmental guidance, including King a stint as a special projects consultant for the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, specializing in the sex crimes and child abuse divisions.

In the early 1980s, she began volunteer work with organizations such as the Family Support Center, which is now a part of the Children’s Bureau.

“I would do volunteer work when the kids were in school,” King said. “I got so interested in helping children that were taken away from their parents or abused and neglected.

I feel that those children did nothing to deserve their circumstances.”

In 2001, King retired from her political career to pursue a passion for painting. She opened a space in downtown Zionsville, A King’s Art Studio and Gallery.

“I had never been able to devote any time

to art and creating,” King said. “I thought, the last part of my life I’m going to devote to art.”

King still felt a calling to help children. Her college friend, Sharon Pierce, also has a history working in child services. The two met at Ball State University in the 1970s through their sorority, Pi Beta Phi. Pierce, a Zionsville resident of 28 years, became CEO of The Villages more than 25 years ago. The Villages, a nonprofit organization, specializes in foster care, adoption and family services for Indiana’s children, youth and families.

King began contributing to The Villages in 2011. After donating financially for six years, she decided she wanted to go a step further.

“In 2017, Ann and I were having breakfast at Rosie’s,” Pierce said. “She said to me, ‘I want to do more than write a check.’”

At that time, The Villages was serving 3,000 children. According to Pierce, 57 percent of the children were 5 years and younger. Because of lack of care, many were not toilet trained.

“We were experiencing even 3- and 4-yearolds who had not been potty trained,” Pierce said.

According to Indiana Dept. of Child Services, foster parents in Indiana are paid approximately $615.90 per month for a child under 4 who does not require special services. Compared to other states, this rate puts Indiana in the bottom half of the U.S. for foster family pay. A week’s worth of diapers can cost as much as $40, on top of other expenses.

“It is not fair for families who have stepped up (to foster a child) to have to sacrifice their own families’ financial wellbeing,” Pierce said.

pers and other supplies, King ordered 1,000 diapers on Amazon and sent them to The Villages, where they were distributed among families.

“That gave us the idea to do an annual ‘Diaper Day’,” Pierce said. “Ann planted the seed and that seed has flourished.”

This year, 23,472 diapers were collected on The Villages’ Aug. 28 Diaper Day. In 2017, the inaugural Diaper Day brought in 21,531 diapers. “(This amount would) only last about three days for the children they serve,” King said.

Noblesville resident and foster parent Altonio Spiker said he is thankful for the resources provided by The Villages, including the diapers his family received from the Diaper Day drive.

He and his husband, Stephen Spiker, began fostering 3-month-old Robert in July.

Stephen and Altonio have wanted a child for more than eight years. Because they are a same-sex couple, many foster organizations denied them in the past. After two surrogacy attempts ended in miscarriage, they knew they would have to wait for the right opportunity.

“Marriage became legal for us, so we decided to give (foster care) another chance,” Altonio said. “We started looking for groups that would help us through it and we came across The Villages. We loved the support system they offered for foster parents.”

The Villages works hand-in-hand with organizations such as the Dept. of Child Services to vet each foster family with extensive financial and criminal background checks, home visits and more. It also requires parents to take classes, receive first aid certifications and child-proof their homes.

“We got approved on a Monday and we got Robert that Wednesday,” Altonio said.

“He was 5 days old.”

Altonio said many people choose not to foster a newborn because of the difficulty and expense. The money offered by the state does not cover the cost of day care for an infant. Altonio and Stephen are participating in a foster-to-adopt program.

“We’re hoping that he will be ours,” Altonio said. “This is something me and my husband wanted. (The Villages) gives you such an unbelievable support system. I’m happy that we chose to go with them.”

Altonio said the child can go through as many as 12 diapers each day and is happy to have received diapers from The Villages.

King said giving diapers and donating to The Villages is a way she can give to the children in lieu of caring for them personally.

“I don’t feel that at my age I can take in a little baby,” King said. “This is a way that I can help take care of them and make their life a little easier and a little better.”

As long as there have been humans, we have flung our collective hopes to that which lies beyond our immediate grasp. Early explorers followed rivers and paths seeking the outer bounds of what might be called home. For their part, sailors would collect provisions, rig whatever might float and wade into the crashing surf knowing, if only through instinct, that there must be something more – something just past what we currently understand as tangible, risking life and family on a bet for the unknowable.

Too often, the quest would leave them consumed by an angry sea.

But then, some would find a humble rock cast upon the waters and there build a civilization.

This fortnight past, I found myself enjoying the hospitality of a stony coastline on a series of volcanic islands, part of an archipelago extending into the Atlantic Ocean cast from Saharan Africa. In sailing around the landmass, one could imagine the vast and incalculable expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. In it, we are bolstered in the reassurance of such human striving. Certainly, we are creatures capable of both evil and glory. The bad in us is all too obvious. Still, in seeing the vastness of the rolling sea laid out, one is struck by our capacity to strive for something more. As the isle was the ultimate rigging point for Columbus and his crews bound for discovery, we wondered what must have been on their minds as they left the craggy but familiar shores to head due west toward the setting sun.

Much has transpired in these many millennia. Yet, there remains infinite discovery to be made — the bounds of space, the depths of oceans and the components of our own lives chief among them.

The states of Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming ELECTION do not impose income taxes on their citizens. Nevada, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not impose income taxes on corporations.

In Indiana, the personal income tax rate is 3.23 percent of adjusted gross income, and the corporate income tax rate is 6 percent of the corporation’s adjusted gross income.

The governor says we have a technically skilled worker shortage in Indiana. Abolishing the state personal income tax would attract more high-tech workers to the Hoosier State. Capping the state property tax at 1 percent of purchase price, instead of the ever-increasing assessed value, would also give high-tech workers an incentive to make Indiana their home. Abolishing all personal and corporate income tax would invigorate Hoosier businesses to invest in growth within our state.

All forms of taxation have a negative impact on the Hoosier economy. The more we reduce taxation across the board, the more money will be spent in Indiana that will result in a more vibrant, balanced economy.

Lost and still not found Commentary by Danielle Wilson That’s it! I am done with debit cards. Sure, they’re great when you don’t have cash and you can remember your PIN. HUMOR And I do love that they masquerade as credit without the annoying interest rates and accompanying, “Let’s go to Vegas!” mindset. But enough, already. I can’t handle the inevitable breakup that comes after I accidentally throw it away at a Meijer gas station or one of my darling teens loses it somewhere in the landfill she calls a room.

The card that I have now, which is actually my third since April, is MIA. I’m confident the aforementioned child has it, but she swears to the contrary. I know I should cancel it immediately, but I’ve only had this one for six weeks. I haven’t even memorized the numbers yet!

And that’s the real rub. My debit card is part of the reason I survive as a working mom. When I have to start over with a

whole new set of expiration dates and CVV codes, life comes to a grinding halt. Suddenly, I’m receiving “payment could not be processed” emails from forgotten accounts with automatic bill pay and emergency texts from hangry kids who can’t add money to their lunch accounts. And my weirdly close relationship with Amazon Prime takes a major punch to the gut. I can no longer buy two, 5-foot posable skeletons with accompanying eyepatches without getting out of my seat and going to find my purse. Can you imagine? The horror!

So, I’m holding out hope that my pretty little DC shows up soon. I really can’t go through another break-up.

Bagel, flagel, shmagel Commentary by Dick Wolfsie When I stepped inside a New York deli recently, I witnessed something peculiar. People weren’t eating traditional HUMOR bagels — those rings of hockey puck-shaped dough that have been boiled and then baked to a perfect brownish sheen. Instead, they were eating something called a flagel, also known as a shmagel. Shmagel/flagel, whatever. They looked delicious.

These bagels have been shmooshed (Yiddish for “flattened”) into the size of 45 rpm records before being put in the oven. One flagel or shmagel might not fill up your stomach, but it fills up your plate.

Some diners spread cream cheese over the top; others tried to slice the flagel the normal way, a risky maneuver given that flagels are half the height and twice the diameter of bagels. Some people also were putting lox on top, right over the onions or poppy seeds, or any of the 22 varieties.

There are websites dedicated to flagels, and other sites by people who want nothing more than to shmear the good name of bagel purveyors. One woman complained: “Flagels were invented 20 years ago, and I

may have gotten one of those originals this morning.”

Here’s another comment: “I really liked them. Do they have fewer calories than the regular bagels?”

Yes, and a pound of matzo weighs less than a pound of corned beef.

I dug deeper online to further educate myself about flagels. Where were they invented? And how had I missed out on this earth-baking sensation prior to last week?

One site warned of the side effects of digesting this product, including headache, stomach cramps and irritability. I grew up in a home where everyone felt this way after every meal. Oops, sorry! I was reading a website that came up about the antibiotic Flagyl, not flagels.

When I got back home to Indy, I wondered if I could figure out a way to bring flagels to the Midwest and make a lot of money. Actually, I don’t think I’m smart enough. But some Einstein will figure it out.

Hackman Hulett LLP was founded in 1929 under the name Thompson Rabb & Stevenson in downtown Hammerle Indianapolis. The firm changed its name to Hackman Hulett LLP in 2015. PLAY “I first read the show when I was on a plane and despite trying to remain quiet, there were moments I couldn’t help but audibly react, laughing loudly enough that I got some weird looks from other passengers,” she said of the farce.

The Westfield resident is acting and producing Improbable Fiction Theatre Company’s “The Comedy of Errors” Nov. 2 to 11 at The Cat Theatre, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel.

“There is a lot of effort going in to each side and, as anything, I wish I had more time to devote to each,” Bartley said. “I have been involved in many aspects of theater over the past couple of decades, but this is my first time being producer.

Thankfully, a couple other members of the show are seasoned producing veterans and are helping answer any questions I have along the way. The acting side feeds into my creativity, and the producing plays into my type-A characteristics.”

Bartley said the show features a 20-member cast with a wide range of backgrounds and ages.

“As this is Shakespeare, we of course have to include some fight choreography,” Bartley said. “The Cat is a smaller venue, so it is always a challenge to figure out how to use the space well and get the full effect. For this show, we are doing comedic fighting. Keep an eye out for the difference of speed and, of course, fantastic character reactions.”

This is the first of Shakespeare’s plays the group has done which it hasn’t had to trim because of length. Bartley said the performance is likely to be under two hours.

“I began performing with the Improbable Fiction people even before the official creation of the company, so I have been with them since its start,” Bartley said. “I have been able to be on stage in many of the performances. The last two IFTC shows I acted in were ‘The Butler Did It Again’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing.’ Both took place

“We take the time to develop characters and relationships that fit the show and are believable to the audience,” Bartley said.

Bartley plays Lucinda. Her sister is Adriana, who is married to the main character Antipholus of Ephesus. Adriana is played

by Tamara Rulon, a Noblesville resident.

“Tamara and I have been on stage numerous times over the last six years, but this is our first time as sisters,” Bartley said. “Because we work so well together, it has been fun to bring a sisterly love and banter to life. One of the challenges is realizing that Shakespeare, like any author, developed his craft over the years. His ability to build characters in ‘The Comedy of Errors’ was not quite as developed as you may see in other, more well-known

works. There are moments when the actor has to take two character traits that do not typically go together and create a believable character. This ended up being a fun task to tackle.”

Other cast members include Adam Workman, Antipholus, Indianapolis; David Burch, Dromio of Ephesus, Noblesville; and Daniel Shock, Dromio of Syracuse, Noblesville.

Noblesville resident Ryan Shelton is directing the play. Christy Clinton, Fishers, is the assistant director.

Shelton and Clinton are founders of IFTC along with Noblesville resident Jeff Bick.

“We started producing shows together at the Belfry in Noblesville and with Noblesville’s Shakespeare in the Park,” Shelton said. “We have a partnership with Nickel Plate Arts as well.”

Modern ‘Odyssey’ comes to ZMS

The play’s story is being retold in the 1950s but depicted during the Trojan War. Ben Diedrich portrays Odysseus, giving him the opportunity to perform several combat scenes.

“Action is everywhere,” Diedrich said. “You can’t go a scene without having something fun to do.”

The ZMS performances are at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 and 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 3 Tickets are available before each show.

Having recently read ‘The Odyssey” at ZMS, Meyer is excited to already know many elements of the story.

“We wanted to give them that culture right away,” said Gregg, a science teacher at ZMS. Seventh- and eighth-graders will perform a musical in the spring and some act as mentors for this production’s 55 students, helping the younger students with elements like costumes, lighting and acting.

Although the cast is larger than many plays, Gregg said it allows students to refine skills such as body language, placement and projection that aren’t always a focus of a musical.

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: Inside Sun King Spirits taproom and distillery, 351 Monon Blvd., Carmel What to get: The Carmel Tenderloin Price: A la carte, $3.50 per slider Anna’s take: The Den by Foxgardin is the perfect place to go if you want to sample a little bit of a lot of different items. It is a spin-off of the popular Foxgardin restaurant in Fortville. The restaurant offers four types of sliders, barbeque options, several sides and entrees. I ordered the fried mozzarella, a side of fries and the Carmel Tenderloin slider. The fried mozzarella are thick slabs of mozzarella cheese, cut fresh, marinated in house-made, wet batter, tossed in a dry batter, fried and served with homemade marinara sauce. They are what The Den calls “twice-fried,” so they’re extra crispy.

My favorite was the Carmel Tenderloin, a miniature twist on a sandwich famous throughout Indiana. It is the size of a slider, making it very conquerable compared to traditional tenderloins. The tenderloin is

actually made out of tenderloin and not the more common ingredient, pork loin. Chef Jake Burgess said the restaurant, which has no freezers, is fast/casual but chef-driven.

All sauces are made in-house.

The Den by Foxgardin is one of four restaurants inside Sun King Spirits, a taproom and new distillery just off the Monon near downtown Carmel. Sun King Spirits features the emerging concept of food halls, where multiple eateries with different menus are housed within one establishment.

Suggested pairings: Burgess said his goal for The Den by Foxgardin is for food to pair well with any of Sun King’s beers.

“My idea behind my food, here especially, is eat what you want, drink what you want and everything will meld together,” he said.

Berlin’s twin towers Commentary by Don Knebel Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt has been called the most beautiful public square north of the Alps. Its twin church towers reflect both religious dissonance and archiTRAVEL tectural harmony.

In about 1688, Frederick I of Prussia created a new outdoor market in an area of Berlin inhabited by a large number of Huguenots (French Protestants) who had fled persecution by French Roman Catholics.

In 1701, Frederick gave the refugees permission to build a church at the northern end of the market, where they worshipped in the Reform tradition established by John Calvin. When indigenous Protestants, who worshipped in the tradition established by Martin Luther, demanded their own church, Frederick allowed them to build a Lutheran church at the southern end of the market.

In 1785, Frederick II commissioned Carl von Gontard, a local Huguenot architect, to design and build virtually identical Palladianstyle domed towers adjacent to the original churches. Beginning in 1818, a theater, its exterior design complementing the domed towers, was erected along the western side

of the plaza. The northern church became known informally as Französischer Dom (French Dome), and the southern church became known as Deutscher Dom (German Dome). The plaza itself was called Gendarmenmarkt after the military stables that once existed on the site.

Allied bombing during World War II severely damaged the buildings in Gendarmenmarkt. The East German government restored them all during the 1970s.

Today, Französischer Dom is still used as a church and includes a Huguenot museum.

Deutscher Dom, no longer a church, houses an exhibit about German parliamentary history. The theater is used as a concert hall for one of Berlin’s orchestras, which performs open-air concerts from the hall’s steps during the summer. In the winter, Gendarmenmarkt once again becomes a colorful outdoor market.
