Some residents not happy with proposed downtown traffic light

By Audrey Bailey • news@currentzionsville.com The town of Zionsville is making plans to install a traffic light at one of the major entry points to downtown, transportation but not everyone thinks that’s a good idea.

Town officials are targeting next fall to begin installing a traffic light at Oak and First streets, an intersection that is currently guided by a three-way stop sign. But, according to Lance Lantz, Zionsville superintendent of street/stormwater services, managing the area’s high traffic flow is something that needs to be addressed.

“We have done a traffic study and found that the level of service in the evening peak hour of travel is an E on a scale of A to F, which means there is a significant delay experienced by drivers,” Lantz said.

Some in the area don’t believe the light is a good idea. Mervyn Cohen, a Zionsville resident, does not see the need for positioning a stop light at this familiar intersection.

“The problem with putting a light there is there are many times a day when it’s really quiet,” Cohen said “So, people are just going to sit there with the light green going the other way, and you’re sitting at red, doing nothing.”

For Cohen and some other Zionsville residents, the idea of removing the stop signs and adding a stoplight seems both unnecessary and costly.

“It’s solving a problem that doesn’t exist at the cost of a lot of money,” Cohen said.

The Zionsville Economic Development Commission is considering funding the estimated $260,000 project next year. In addition to installing a traffic light, the project would include improvements to First Street from Sycamore to Poplar streets.

“There’s a landscaping and pedestrian draining plan that has been developed to fix some other deficiencies along Oak Street,” Lantz said. “And, as part of that design process, we look to include a signal at the intersection along with all the other sidewalk and pedestrian accommodations that would be necessary to include a pedestrian crossing element.”

Z’Sparkle results – Event organizers recently announced that the Z’Sparkle Party Drag Race held in August raised more than $31,000 this year for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter. The event also received the “Champions Award” at the Oct. 10 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in downtown Indianapolis for the highest fundraising.

ZEF celebrates 20 years of classroom support

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Twenty years ago a group of education supporters joined forces to create the Zionsville Education Foundation with education a goal to provide grants to teachers and save funds for the future. In the past two decades, approximately 500 grants have been bestowed, with 10 grant recipients announced for this fall cycle.

Grant requests to help build independent readers, provide stereomicroscopes and create a hydroponic tower garden - among many other ideas - were among 15 applications received for this cycle.

“They are exactly what ZEF wants,” ZEF Executive Director Tracy Phillips said. “Innovative, out of the box, game changing grants, something that will change the course of a young person’s life.”

The grant budget for fall and spring is higher this year than previous years in celebration of the 20th anniversary.

“We always have more grants than we have budget,” Phillips said. “We want to fund as many grants as possible.”

Of the 24 schools competing at the state cross country meet at Northview Church in Carmel on Oct. 3, the Zionsville Middle School girls team placed fourth overall. All-state honors went to Katelyn Wasson and Reagan McCooey. Rounding out those who received state trophies also included Katie Humphries, Sarah Petersen, Sheridan Eggers, Mary Vukovich and Erin Beyer. The ZMS boys placed sixth at the meet. Allstate honors went to Logan Cole and Robby Pratt, who won the race in a time of 9:45, setting a school record beating 312 other runners. Zionsville West Middle School’s Anna Settle had a top-25 finish at the meet, placing 21st. The ZWEST’s girls team placed eighth overall, while the boys team placed 11th.

“We’re looking for the kid who is probably not going to win the contest,” Akard said. “The underdog who makes their own costume using their imagination and their own materials.”

For who knows how many years now, Leigh Ann Akard has been “running around like crazy” barking instructions over family fun her walkie-talkie and putting out fires a couple of nights before Halloween. It takes a lot of effort to organize the annual Boone Village Halloween Party and keep it running smoothly. Why does she do it?

“It’s all about the kids,” said Akard, the co-owner of the event host Akard True Value Hardware. “We get herds of kids. It’s so much fun seeing them. And it’s the way Boone Village can give back to the community. It’s our one big event of the year.”

Akard’s family has operated a hardware store in Zionsville since 1955, first on Main Street before moving to the Boone Village Shopping Center, at the corner of W. Oak St. and Ford Rd. “I’m not sure how many years we’ve been doing this (party) – probably 35-plus years, ever since I was a kid,” said Akard.

Doctors busy during flu epidemic

By Terri Horvath • news@currentzionsville.com Medical professionals still have a healthy fear of the flu, partially because of the devastating epidemic back in the day of 1918. At the time, Zionsville and the rest of the country were nearly helpless in coping with its effects.

No effective drugs or vaccines had been developed to treat this killer flu strain or prevent the spread. The only course of action advised by the health care community was for people to wear masks and avoid crowds. As a result, gathering places, such as schools and theaters, were shuttered.

Nationwide about 675,000 died from the disease. Worldwide 20 to 50 million deaths were attributed to this pandemic. Researchers eventually discovered that this flu virus had traveled to the lungs and caused pneumonia for several of its victims.

In a statewide effort to combat the spread, Indiana medical advisor William B. Lincoln issued this statement to the press: “While as yet there are but a few cases of influenza in this section, it was decided to be on the safe side and take all precautions possible to prevent an epidemic of the disease here.”

Like other districts in the state, Zionsville closed its schools from Oct. 7 to Nov. 4. A few cases, including some deaths, still developed and kept the area’s doctors busy. Two who probably were working overtime to deal with their patients’ cases were Dr. Onis Brendel, holding the reins in the photo, and his father Dr. John F. Brendel.

Today, medical professionals offer vastly improved options. A favored choice is vaccination, which is often available at pharmacies, doctors’ offices or even at work.

Indy native writes about race

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com When Dwight Ritter was 35, the woman who raised him died. He had remained close with her over the years. His wife books knew her. His children knew her.

But, overcome with grief, he couldn’t bring himself to go to her funeral.

“I hunkered down in New England 1,000 miles away, built a wall in my psyche and never allowed myself to remember, in detail, her role Ritter in my wonderful childhood,” Ritter said. “I inherited her walking cane and a Gideon Bible. I was so ashamed of myself for missing her funeral, I built a locked box of memories filled with love and humor that – over time – slowly came to life.”

Fast forward 30-plus years to 2009. Ritter’s 13th book, “Emerson The Magnificent,” had gone to press. His agent had one question – what would his next book be about?

The answer came when his wife hurt her hip and asked him to get the cane he’d inherited from his nanny, Georgey.

“I handed it to her, and we looked at each other, both holding that cane,” he said. “This is

your next book sweetheart,’ she said.”

That book – first titled “The Cane” – is now in print with a new title – “Growin’ Up White.”

Set in Indianapolis (where Ritter grew up), it centers around the Stoner family, told from the perspective of their middle son, Rick. It’s also the story of Georgey – a “quirky 50-yearold black housekeeper from the Bahamas who is an integral part of the Stoner family.”

“The only true character whose name I kept was Georgey,” Ritter said. “Everyone else was like a good tossed salad made of tasty parts of fruits, vegetables … and a few nuts thrown in.”

Starlings still fill the skies Commentary by Ward Degler It was a sunny day until a black cloud blocked out the sun. Except it wasn’t plain talk a cloud, it was a flock of starlings twisting and swooping through the sky.

This remarkable bit of avian choreography is called a murmuration. Starlings do it twice per year in spring and fall.

Apparently, it’s what’s left of their original migration flight back home in Europe. There, they migrate from the chilly climes of Norway to the balmy breezes of Egypt in the fall and back to the fjords again in the spring. In America, they seem content to migrate back and forth from the city to the farm. Some bird historians say it started in 1848 when someone released a pair of starlings in New York’s Central Park. Others claim it was in Pennsylvania in 1850. Either way, the birds grew to enormous populations in a hurry.

It didn’t take long for the birds to become a major problem in large metropolitan areas. In New York City, their droppings made people sick, and by the early 1950s, the problem had reached epidemic proportions.

In my hometown, the birds filled the trees and littered the sidewalks. The city council temporarily lifted the ban on discharging firearms within

the city and offered a bounty of one nickel per bird.

The response was immediate and overwhelming. Probably no one in city hall knew how many residents actually owned shotguns, or how enthusiastically they would respond to the challenge.

Officials cancelled the program after only three weeks when they realized they had overlooked one important factor in their planning.

The city jail was the designated drop off place for the dead birds, and it wasn’t long before the accumulation of overstuffed gunnysacks overwhelmed the building.

A mass burial program was hastily imposed while prisoners were temporarily relocated to a neighboring county.

Ultimately, the city paid out several thousand dollars in bounty payments, re-imposed the ban on discharging firearms and quietly filed the starling program away in hopes it would soon be forgotten.

Some said the starlings never noticed.

Zionsville author Don Knebel tells travel tales in new book

But the differences between Eastern COVER STORY and Western bathroom practices is just a glimpse of the many stories contained in Don Knebel’s new book, “Flushed with Curiosity: 101 Travel Tales with a Twist.”

“The idea was to give people a sense of the world that they wouldn’t have otherwise,” said Knebel, 69.

A resident of Zionsville for 16 years, Knebel has always had a passion for traveling with his wife, Jennifer. He originally graduated from Purdue University with an engineering degree, but after a few years, decided to pursue a different path and ended up at Harvard Law School.

In 1974, Knebel moved to Indianapolis to work as a partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP. He retired in 2013 and now works as an adjunct professor at Indiana University, lectures in the community about religious understanding and writes travel columns for Current.

Knebel first began writing these columns back in 2011, when Brian Kelly, publisher of Current, suggested he document and share his unique experiences with others.

Before this, Knebel’s passion had taken him and his wife to “all the places most people go,” he said, including cities like Rome and Paris. But before too long, the couple was booking flights and exploring some of the worlds most archaic and exotic destinations.

“In the spring of 2006, we decided to go to Israel for about 10 days and came back with a sense that we really needed to learn more about the history and cultures of the Middle East,

which is where civilization started,” Knebel said.

From there, Knebel and his wife went to Egypt, India, Syria, Turkey, Morocco and several other places, adding up to about 35 countries. These travels are featured in Knebel’s columns and his new book.

The accounts in “Flushed with Curiosity” are printed and placed according to historical chronological order. After the novel’s opening story in Jericho, Knebel precedes to one of his most memorable destinations in Northeast Africa where he describes the ancient, yet advanced civilizations of Egypt.

“Of all the places we’ve been, the one that was most eyeopening was probably Egypt” Knebel said. “So many of the world’s religions were all religious concepts that go all the way

back to Egypt.”

These concepts include purification by water, seen in Judaism and Christianity, and origins of the Christian Trinity.

Knebel uses these narratives as a foundation for what has inspired him to travel to various foreign places and share the cultural practices each holds dear.

Throughout his excursions to areas some westerners might consider off-limits, Knebel has managed to observe more overarching similarities between these societies than differences.

“Ultimately, people are more alike. Everybody wants to have their family be successful, themselves be successful,” Knebel said. “They want to believe in something bigger than themselves. We all want to believe in something beyond ourselves.”

We had talked on more than one occasion about how we thought the vice president would wait to see how Hillary Rodman Clinton (D-N.Y.) would fare after the conclusion of the e-mail server investigation, likely in February, before he would announce.

Shows what we know. Regardless, we are disappointed by his decision, because we believed him to be a more-worthy challenger to Clinton than Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will turn out to be in the long run. But just as there is scant difference between Democrats and Republicans these days, we believe that is the case with Clinton and Sanders.

••• There is a lot of back and forth going on in Zionsville about the potential for a traffic light at Oak and First streets in the Village.

We’re probably in the vast minority on this, but based on our travels in and around that area, the light is needed.

Wispy shreds

Confederate is defined first as “joined by agreement or treaty.” The synonyms include: cooperating, combined and united.

Flag is defined as “a piece of cloth or similar material, typically oblong or square, attachable by one edge to a pole or rope and used as the symbol or emblem of a country or institution or as a decoration during public festivities.” Therein synonyms include: banner, standard and streamer. Both seem harmless enough. In fact, one might argue that they have a bias towards the positive.

How can a cooperative streamer lead to violence?

But like much of the human condition, the whole is far greater (and much different) than the sum of its parts. Through what has been a largely civil reframing of the Confederate Flag has been repositioned in our collective understanding. What represented to some the violent oppression of fellow humans by the immoral institution of slavery to others suggested dogged inde-

pendence and self-reliance. Several states continued to employ the flag and many memorials were dedicated to it.

Whether you call the war between the states a quelling of rebellion or the “war of Northern aggression,” the battle is over and all can predict the silencing of the symbol – the flag is retiring into the ash heap of history. Most say it is time. Yet, why do we imbue so much in these wispy shreds of fabric? Can a bit of cloth just be a bit of cloth?

Symbols are powerful. Candidates wrap themselves in flags to show patriotism or sniff stinky shoes to show, one can guess, solidarity with the common stinky-footed man. But, who owns these symbols. And, who gets to decide their meaning?

Oh, Halloween, how I love thee. A night of enchantment and bountiful candy. A time to prepare for that perfect costume. A pointy hat, black cape and a witch’s broom?

Or maybe a ghost with a simple white sheet. Make sure to hem it or you’ll trip up your feet!

No matter the act or role that they choose, remember that parents too need humor treats and/or booze. A spiced wine or cold beer, it’s really no matter, All Hallows Eve means a night to get fatter! At Chez Wilson, you see, chili and cornbread do reign, as I sport a fall apron and a dazzling new mane.

‘Cause every Halloween I wear a cool wig, usually a strawberry-blonde afro that goes over big. We decorate to the hilt, mainly just outside, with a graveyard and strobe lights, and goblins who’ve died.

My favorite is our scene with the rusty lawnmower, underneath which lies a body who moved much slower than the machine which fatally pinned him beneath, and left him in pieces — his arms, legs and teeth.

We add a little more décor each October that comes, like a beady-eyed raven amongst some fake plastic mums.

Last year was the fog machine, though it actually kind of sucked. It overheated and shut down; I think we got . . . screwed.

Anyhoo, we adore this most fantastic of eves. Whether in the heat we sweat or cold temps we freeze.

As long as there’s no rain to ruin the night, we’ll traipse through the hood with utter delight.

For on this night of all nights, with magic in the air, we celebrate family and tradition and my fake afro hair.

Most importantly we relish our children’s wide eyes, filled with wonder and excitement and hopes still alive of landing the mother lode of sugar and sweets, and setting up shop later to trade jellied feet.

Then it’s off to bed where sleep comes late, as they replay the events of such a wonderful date.

Happy Halloween to you all, and let me leave no doubt, it’s my most favorite day of the year! Peace out.

Because I am originally a New Yorker, I still read the New York Times every Sunday morning. My favorite column is humor “The Ethicist,” written by several well-known philosophers — not well known to me, but apparently very well known to other accomplished philosophers, although I’m not sure what philosophers ever accomplish.

Here’s an example of a topic: You are the last to leave a restaurant during a rainstorm, but the last umbrella in the hat check room is not yours. Should you take it? Yes, they actually debated this. I am sad to say, drier heads did not prevail.

Here’s how I’d answer some common questions: Q: When I travel, I always take the little bottle of shampoo out of the bathroom and put it in my suitcase. I was feeling guilty about this, but the clerk said the company that makes this stuff expects people to do that. That’s why they put their name on the product. Recently, I picked up a Sony TV and a General Electric hair dryer from the Westin. Should I stop?

A: Only after you cross the border.

Q: I gave my friend money to buy me a lottery ticket. He went to Village Pantry and bought 10 for himself and one for me. He gave one to me that night. The next day, a ticket he was holding won $25,000,000. I think that was my ticket and he got them mixed up in his pocket.

Should I confront him?

A. Assuming you can afford to fly to Fiji … and assuming you can get past his four bodyguards on his 300-foot yacht, sure, why not?

Q: For the last five years I have been having fun with my neighbor. Every day when he goes to work, I mow his lawn.

We were at a party together and he was telling me how this is driving him crazy because his lawn never grows. I almost busted a gut. Should I tell him?

A. What, and ruin this perfect practical joke?

Hey, here’s my address. Wouldn’t it be funny if my car never got dirty?

Parenting Time During the Holidays The holiday season can be a difficult time if you are going through or just recently divorced. This is especially true for young children, therefore, it is important to know what the schedule will be and deal with issues that may arise before they turn into substantial and potentially volatile disputes.

The Guidelines. If your divorce decree or preliminary order indicates that you will operate under the Holiday provisions of the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines, then the first step is to be certain that you have read these provisions and understand how they divide the holiday periods in question. A considerable amount of misunderstandings can be avoided by both parties reviewing the Guidelines and any discussions about varying from them can start from common ground. Ultimately, if the parties cannot agree and the decree establishes the provisions in the Guidelines as the default schedule, both sides also know what the consequences of not agreeing will be. If an agreement is reached, make sure it is clear all the way to times and dates.

Stick to whatever schedule you agree upon and be courteous in timely dropping off and picking up the children, understanding that each moment with both families is precious for them and that scheduling delays can result in larger conflicts between parents.

Consider Family Traditions. Holiday traditions are one thing children can look forward to even during difficult times. If your family has holiday traditions, make every effort to continue them. If the divorce or separation is recent and you believe it may be difficult on the children, consider a vacation or begin a new and fun family tradition that the children can get excited about. For example, if, historically, your family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve and the other parent’s family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Day, you should create a schedule that allows the children to participate and enjoy both families’ traditions each and every year. Sometimes, if the holiday traditions are identical, it may make sense to alternate holidays on a yearly basis rather than break-up each holiday into equal parts. This way, the children are able to participate in both homes even if the celebrations are on different days.

Alternating holidays on an annual basis can also create more relaxing family holiday experiences as opposed to the stress involved with coordinating schedules.

Communicate. If the children are not with you for the holidays, call them, send cards and/or emails. Consider creating your own family celebration either before or after the actual holiday. Children love celebrations and gifts, regardless of the day and time. Conversely, if the children are spending the holiday with you, you should encourage and allow them to speak with the other parent. If the children are too young to call on their own, help them make or receive a call, and always give the children and the other parent a quiet moment together.

Put the Children First. No matter how challenging your relationship is with your children’s father/mother, please remember that he/she is the parent of your children and, therefore, you should make every effort to respect the co-parenting relationship, striving to keep your children’s best interests as your top priority.

Coordinate gift-giving. Ask the other what he/she plans on giving the children, and share your plans with the other parent. Help your children make a holiday card or purchase a gift for them to give the other parent. Offer to take your children shopping to buy presents for the other parent. For young children especially, holidays are exciting times and they want to give as much as they want to receive. Put personal feelings aside, knowing that building healthy and positive relationships between parents creates a winning situation for the entire family.

Remember that the other parent will be in your life long after the children are grown, so the more you are able to effectively communicate and co-parent, the easier the transition will be on you and your children.

Visiting drummer Aronoff kicks off Festival of Books & Arts festival highlights

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The 17th annual Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts is loaded with events, but none bigger than its opening act. performance An Evening with Kenny Aronoff will kick off the festival at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Jewish Community Center, 6701 Hoover Rd. Indianapolis. The cost is $25 in advance and $30 at the door for the show with the acclaimed drummer, who is playing with John Fogerty.

“He talks about his career and all the things he’s done in his career and how he remains relevant today,” said Martha Karatz, senior vice president for communications for the JCC.

“He has a health regimen he follows strictly, and he’s an athlete of sorts when you see him on the drums. He talks about his roots in classical music.”

Aronoff, 62, will perform live and share keys to success from 40 years in the business.

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music graduate has previously played with John Mellencamp, Elton John and Paul McCartney, among others. Earlier on Oct. 28, Aronoff will teach a one-hour master class at 4 p.m. for $50 per person.

The festival will run from Oct. 28 through Nov. 16 at the JCC. There is a $40 pass for all the events (excluding Aronoff’s performance).

The Choreography of Dreams, a Spirit &

Place event, is set for two free shows at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Nov. 8. The performance incorporates music, video and spoken words on what it’s like to age in today’s world. It features five unique video stories, related by elder citizens and then interpreted by Dance Kaleidoscope dancers.

“They are all local organizations, and they have collaborated on this wonderful event,” Karatz said.

Most of the events take place in JCC’s Laikin Auditorium.

Another highlight will be “Seussapalooza,” a tribute to Dr. Seuss with arts and crafts and book reading corners, from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 1. The free event will include a special guest,

Clay Middle tackles ‘Peter Pan’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com It wasn’t hard for Clay Middle School choir teacher Miranda Susie to entice students to perform in “Peter Pan performance JR.” “The kids have loved this production,” said Susie, who serves as director of the musical. “They love it. It has pirates, mermaids and lost boys. They love that there are all the familiar characters. There are a lot of familiar songs, but they learn a lot of new music. The costumes and sets are fun.”

The musical will be presented Nov. 5-7 at 7 p.m. at Clay Middle’s auditorium.

“We have choir, band and orchestra students. We have athletes in the play,” Susie said. “The whole student body is represented.”

Piper Williams, an eighth grader, plays Peter Pan. “I like singing and performing, and doing it with my friends is a lot of fun,” Williams said.

Williams was in the chorus in sixth grade musical, “Guys and Dolls JR.” She was an understudy in “Xanadu JR.” as a seventh grader.

“So finally in eighth grade I get to experience being a lead, which I hadn’t done before,” Williams said. “I really love the music. I like how there is a little bit of the Disney movie and a little bit of the Broadway so it’s kind of

“I’ve had smaller roles in the plays in middle school, which have all been fun,” Hedges said.

“But this is a new and fun experience.”

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Once again, as we drive to the game, we can’t help but notice that all the corn and bean fields have been harvested, and warm days seem to have vanished. Most of the fall color for trees is gone as well. So what does this mean?

It means that we’ve pressed that little weather icon on our phones at least two dozen times. It means that we are going to have to find good ways to enjoy a tailgate party without shuddering from the cold. So here are some basics things to remember.

Staying warm requires understanding two key principles: conduction and convection.

Conduction is the transfer of heat between two solid surfaces that are in direct contact with each other, such as when you stand on cold pavement. Convection is the transfer of heat between a mass (such as your body) and a moving fluid or gas (such as a cool wind that whips around every square inch of you).

Understanding both of these chilling mechanisms, as well as the workings of your body’s built-in thermoregulatory system, will help keep you warm when you next cold-weather tailgate.

Dress in layers so you can keep the wind out and be able to remove items so that you don’t sweat when your body does heat up.

Avoid the wind by setting up on the lee side of your vehicle or having a canopy-tent with a walled side.

Have a heat source. The best one is the sun, but if there is no sun, then have your grill hot and in your seating area.

Keep your body hydrated.

Keep your body “furnace” stoked with hot foods, hot beverages and slow-burning food

ONION SOUP Ingredients: 1 lb. onions sliced, 2 tsp. fine sugar, 2 heaping tbsp. flour, 8 cups beef stock (or 10 cubes bouillon in 8 cups H20), 4 tbsp. butter, Salt (unless you use bouillon which already has a lot) Pepper, French bread, Gruyere and/or Mozzarella cheese Preparation: In a soup pot, brown onions slowly in butter until they become transparent. Add sugar and cook just three more minutes before adding flour and cook another minute. Add beef stock and bring the whole mixture to a boil while stirring. Lower your heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Salt and pepper the soup as you like it, let it cool, and then refrigerate the soup (overnight) in a large square, re-sealable container.

Colored contacts for Halloween? Think again

A recent study published in “Eye & Contact Lens: Science & Clinical Practice” found the presence of harmful chemicals in the vision colorants used in cosmetic contact lenses bought without a prescription.

They are urging consumers to beware of buying contact lenses without a valid doctor’s prescription because these lenses cannot be guaranteed to meet U.S. FDA standards for this type of medical device. Some of the chemicals found in the colorants were chlorine, titanium and iron, all of which can have devastating consequences for vision and ocular health.

Dr. Jeffrey J. Walline, O. D. Ph. D., and chair of the American Optometric Association’s Contact Lens & Cornea Section, stated, “This makes these lenses extremely dangerous to even try for a short period of time, including, for example, a Halloween party.”

These chemicals decrease the contact lens’ ability to breathe and the way they are applied to the lenses can be indirect contact with the cornea. This may cause the cornea to develop permanent scarring, corneal ulcers, infections or grow irregular blood vessels. Consequently, these

lenses are extremely dangerous to wear even for a few hours.

It’s important to remember that all contact lenses require a prescription in order to be legally sold. The federal government considers all contact lenses to be medical devices. Federal law states any sale of contact lenses made without verifying the prescription with the prescribing eye doctor or without a complete copy of the prescription is illegal. This is law for a reason. These cosmetic lenses sold without a prescription, often on the internet or in salons or party stores, are not regulated, and we are now seeing hard evidence to prove there are chemicals which can permanently damage your eyes, even when worn for a short period of time. Only contact lenses prescribed by an eye doctor and worn according to the prescribed schedule are safe to wear.

Homes sales up this year Commentary by Jim Litten September saw fewer listings and pended home sales, but year-to-date, the market is perreal estate forming better than 2014. In the ninecounty central Indiana region, Tucker’s data revealed a 6.8 percent decline in home sales last month compared to September 2014. Year-to-date, sales were up 7.9 percent, and average yearto-date home sale prices climbed 4.9 percent to $185,536.

Boone County saw a 7.3 percent decline in inventory, and the average yearto-date sale price for the county also slipped 3.6 percent to $271,190.

• In Zionsville, the average year-todate home sale price dropped 3.6 percent compared to this time last year, decreasing to $370,598.

• Inventory moved at a slightly faster pace in Zionsville in September 2015 compared to September 2014.

Overall, homes sold in 74 days – four days faster than this time last year.

• Pended home sales have slipped

slightly in Zionsville. In September 2015, 29 homes sold – a decline of 20 homes compared to September 2014.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, one was priced $2,000,000 or higher; two were priced $1,000,000 to $1,999,999; two were priced $500,000 to $999,999; seven were priced $300,000 to $499,999; eight were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and nine were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

Residential real estate sales and listings are still very active. The region is 7.9 percent ahead of last year’s pended sales at this time, and that’s a sure sign we’ve ended the third quarter on a strong note. And, as average sale prices continue to rise, the incentive to list a home is still high.

Antique shop celebrates 70 years

David Brown grew up in the house next door to his parents’ antique business. He has never strayed far. anniversary “I’m passionate about retail and mom and pop shops as I call them,” said Brown, whose Zionsville store will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Halloween. “I like working with people every day.”

In recent years, Brown, 64, has rebranded the store, which has three buildings, as Brown’s on Fifth. The shop is at 315 N. Fifth St. “Business is challenging as always,” he said.

“We’re Zionsville’s oldest business. We’ve outlasted everybody on Main Street. You never have enough customers but somehow people have found us.”

His parents, Marshall and Mary Jane Brown, started Brown’s Antiques on Oct. 31, 1945. The couple had moved to Zionsville as newlyweds in 1940.

“They started this in their backyard,” Brown said. “For about three or four years, it was a hobby as my dad still had a full-time job elsewhere.

After that he quit his job at Allison’s and raised a family on this business.”

Brown said his father spearheaded a movement to rejuvenate the Zionsville business area.

“They worked in the store up until their death,” Brown said. “They were both involved in civic matters their entire lives.”

Brown started full-time in the business three years after graduating from Zionsville Community High School in 1969. Brown, who has two older sisters, was the only one who stayed in the business. He and his wife, Kathy, have two sons, Jamie and Matthew, who live in Zionsville.

“I plan to keep working as long as I’m able,” Brown said.

Entrepreneur hopes new game will become tailgating favorite

Mark Van Zant figures he has a product to rival cornhole as the favorite game of tailgaters. new product Van Zant, a Zionsville entrepreneur, is the owner of Tabletop Football. Mike Swalley, a Brownsburg resident, created the game and worked on it for five years. Swalley, a business associate of Van Zant, has handed over the project’s reins to Van Zant.

“We’re trying to keep his dream alive.” Van Zant said. “He developed it to a certain point, and in the last year I took over the project for him and the patents. We’re ready to take it to the mass market.”

The marketing campaign is “Cornhole is Scared!”

The table top football game pivots on a single point. The object is to get the ball through one of three holes in the end zone, two are field goals and one is a touchdown.

“You are tilting or maneuvering the board to play the game,” Van Zant said. “It’s unique that you’re moving the whole board instead of moving pieces around on the board yourself.”

Van Zant said he is trying to raise funds

through sales of the game on Kickstarter, a crowdfunding platform.

“We’re hopeful to get the funds we need to have reengineered and retooled to be mass produced,” Van Zant said. “The funds we raise on Kickstarter will help us with all the development costs in addition to providing a finished product to the public. Then it will be available to the public for $60 or $80 once it hits the market.”

Van Zant, 42, said the game can be purchased on Kickstarter for $69. There are seven different buying levels.

There are five different interchangeable tops as of now. In addition to football, there is basketball, golf, soccer and a World War II Air & Sea theme. Hockey and baseball tabletops are planned.

“It will fold up easily, so we’re really targeting the tailgate market,” Van Zant said. “We think there is market there for more games.

The key is to make it transport.”

Van Zant, who owns Designer Glass Solutions, said the long-term goal is to include collegiate and NFL licensing so different teams will be available.

The goal was to achieve a clean and “beachy” design that would last through time.

1. The oversized tub was removed and allowed room for a larger shower.

2. A more open layout was created which made the room seem larger and brighter by filtering in natural daylight.

3. A heater was installed in the toe kick of the vanity to help distribute heat throughout the room.

4. Decorative feet were added to the new tall vanities so they appeared more like furniture.

5. Sufficient and functional storage was added to the room using cabinetry and hooks.

6. The family’s stained glass windows finished off the beach theme by adding fun color.

Background Info: This home is in the Smokey Knoll subdivision in Carmel. The homeowners have lived in the house for 24 years and felt it was time to remodel. They decided to start with the master bath.

Before problems: The room was dated and starting to show significant wear. The oversized tub was rarely used and blocked off the rest of the room. The vanities were short and lacked much needed storage. The shower was small and felt dark and closed in.

Egyptian tombs known as City of the Dead Commentary by Don Knebel Turning an old joke line on its head, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians are “just living” to get into a cemetery, travel creating one of Cairo’s most unusual tourist destinations.

In the 14th century, Cairo’s rulers established a cemetery in a desert area east of what was then one of the largest cities in the world, with a population of about 500,000.

The rulers and other elites built their mausoleums on the site, the most impressive being the domed mausoleum of Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay, completed in 1474, which served as a model for later tombs. The mausoleums typically included large rooms over the underground gravesite where relatives of the deceased could stay during a 40-day mourning period and subsequently visit to pay their respects and obtain blessings. Over time, smaller buildings, having a similar purpose, were built over gravesites in what became known as the “Northern Cemetery,” which now extends for four miles along a six-lane highway.

In the 20th century, Cairo grew rapidly as people moved in from the countryside. As land to accommodate the city’s increasing mil-

lions grew increasingly scarce and expensive, people began finding permanent shelter in the tomb buildings of the Northern Cemetery.

Lacking the resources to resettle them, the government tolerated the illegal squatters and their numbers grew. Today, up to a million people live in and around the tombs. Children play amidst the graves while women hang their laundry on ropes strung from one mausoleum to the next. Lacking a better solution, the government has run electric wires and provided water to some of the tombs. Vendors
