Cobble Creek on hold – The commission approved another continuance for the Cobble Creek development. Tim Ochs, an attorney representing Pulte Homes, said developers have run into some “significant design issues” regarding drainage. They are finalizing the design of a dam to alleviate the issues. The commission is expected to discuss the matter at its November meeting.

Roundabout faces more repairs

It will be repaired under traffic, likely with flagging, said Debbie Calder, Indiana Dept. of Transportation’s communications director for the Crawfordsville district.

Calder said INDOT officials reviewed the roundabout and have recommended that the following changes be made: -The east splitter island will be tapered down and updated with reflective paint.

-A “Keep Right” sign will be installed at the end of the splitter island on the east leg of the intersection.

-Pavement markings in the westbound lane on the east leg will be repainted to better guide traffic into the intersection.

-Worn pavement markings will be repainted.

-Raised pavement markers left in place along the east leg will be removed, and holes will be filled with epoxy.

tersection as dangerous but said the changes will improve traffic flow.

“It was brought to our attention by a concerned citizen,” Calder said.

Calder said the contractor that built the project is still under contract and is going to make the changes before the end of the year.

She said the project engineer didn’t have a timetable yet about how long the repairs will take.

The intersection closed for construction of the roundabout from July 6 to Sept. 21, 2015.

Then it was closed for nine days from Nov 2 to 11 in 2015 for repairs to the mountable curb on the center island.

ZEF awards $35K in grants

Fall 2016 Classroom Grants

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Education Foundation recently awarded more than $35,000 in fall classroom grants to Zionsville Community Schools. ZEF works to fureducation ther facilitate education with new and innovative ideas. Students and teachers are encouraged to approach ZEF when they see a need for additional funds to create new ways to learn.

One grant was awarded as a result of Zionsville Community High School student Katherine Hamori noticing a need while studying soil samples last summer as she researched organic plant health and crop growth.

“This grant is an interesting combination of things,” ZEF Executive Director Tracy Phillips said. “At the time, they were conducting the testing in an uncontrolled environment because we didn’t have a greenhouse. They said their data would be somewhat flawed because they couldn’t control the environment.”

Hamori made the need known to two teachers at ZCHS who directed her to ZEF. “Katie actually wrote this grant along with Adelpha Twyman, extended experiences coordinator for ZCHS,” Phillips said. “This is the first grant they’ve received from ZEF. Katie

herself has a lot of ownership because she discovered this need.”

The money from the grant will go toward purchasing a small greenhouse that will be housed within the science courtyard at the school. Students can conduct scientific experiments inside the controlled environment without hindering test results.

“The lovely thing about it is not only will it benefit Katie in her research, but it will also help all of our life sciences, AP biology, AP chemistry, environmental sciences and genetics classes,” Phillips said. “This is a very broad reaching grant.”

ZUMC hosts homeless through Family Promise

Three times a year, Zionsville United Methodist Church opens its doors to homeless families, providing food and shelter for a week.

The church does so as part of a program through which Indianapolis-area churches take turns hosting families, organized centrally

by Family Promise of Greater Indianapolis.

These weeks require a team effort, which at ZUMC means about 60 people. Church members divide up the tasks, from driving the program’s van to and from downtown Indianapolis in the morning and evening each day, fixing evening meals, organizing fun activities for kids and sleeping overnight at the church to help in case of need.

Churches need to have some basic facilities, such as a place to play, Sunday school rooms that can be converted to dorm rooms and a place to eat. Showers are also important.

The program creates an opportunity for churches to show love to homeless families. In many cases the parents in the program have recently started new jobs they hope will allow them to ultimately find stable housing. The kids attend school, but in the evening, it’s fun and games.

Family Promise needs to recruit congregations to fill several week-long gaps in 2017.

Knights to be new TPCA mascot

Traders Point Christian Academy in Whitestown is rebranding.

The high school moniker will no longer be the Golden Eagles, with purple schools and gold colors. Instead, the new identity will be the Knights, wearing navy and silver.

“I feel like it has generated a lot of excitement and given our high school students an opportunity to create a new culture that they have rallied behind,” TPCA Athletic Director Adam Stevenson said.

The rebranding is part of a $7.5 million project to build a new high school and athletic field.

“We have reached the capacity on our current facility,” TPCA Director of Admissions Toni Kanzler said. “The high school students are having many of their classes every day in the church facility. We just don’t have room until we finish the building next summer.”

Kanzler said that Stevenson worked with coaches and others to rebrand the high school as the Knights because it is a unique mascot for the area and represents the school’s Christian values.

20th Century Structure named

By Heather Lusk • new@currentzionsville.com The 20th Century Structure in Zionsville has been designated to Monique and Brad Schnabel’s Main Street home built in 1876.

After living in her home for history nearly four decades, Monique Schnabel finally decided this year to complete the application in order to have her home considered.

“I hate to be trite, but it really was a bucket (list) issue,” she said. “It was time to do it now.”

In order to be considered, a structure must be at least 100 years old with “an exterior that hasn’t been unreasonably altered,” according to the application.

The award is presented by the Zionsville Historical Society, which initiated the Century Structures program in 1987 with a purpose to “designate, recognize and honor historic homes in the village.”

“Homeowners who choose to take the time and energy to preserve what was, rather than to simply build new structures in a particular architectural style, deserve to be recognized for their efforts,” said Lynne Manning, ZHS president.

sources at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the Boone County Courthouse.

The couple also found a website listing Sanborn maps showing the location of all buildings in a certain year, created to estimate fire insurance risks. The Schnabels were able to identify their home on an 1895 map.

“It’s interesting to see the footprint,” said Monique, who added that over the years the porch changed and a shed was added and removed.

Bicycle riders and racers from across the Midwest will soon gather for the second Zionsville Harvest 50 Gravel Road Race and 25Mile Challenge Ride. bicycling The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 29, will feature a 50-mile race and a non-competitive 25-mile ride starting at Historic Maplelawn Farmstead in Zionsville. Both will take place on gravel and country roads that run through Boone County.

There will be an official race start and finish at the pedestrian bridge north at Turkey Foot Park in Zionsville.

Riders and racers are encouraged to come back to the farmstead for the awards, and lunch will be served from noon until 3:30 p.m. There will also be hourly tours of the homestead, run by Maplelawn Farmstead, Inc, a nonprofit “dedicated to developing and operating a historically recognized museum and related educational programming,” according to its website.

Remembering my first knife Commentary by Ward Degler I received my first pocketknife when I was 6 years old. We didn’t call it a pocketknife, though. According to my plain talk dad, who gave it to me for Christmas that year, it was a jackknife.

The knife itself was the second part of a two-part Christmas gift. The first part was a pair of Gokey Botte Sauvage boots, arguably, then and now, the most prestigious boots a man can put onto his feet.

The boots were particularly appropriate since we lived that winter in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. It was below zero much of the time, and snow was already deeper than I was tall.

I thought my heart was going to burst from my chest as I opened the box of boots.

After I had oohed and ahhed and whatever else it is that ecstatic 6-year-olds are prone to, I noticed on the outside of the right boot a small leather holster that opened from the top and was secured with a heavy strap. It was empty.

My dad noticed it, too, and commented that he didn’t see how I could wear such good boots with an empty holster. He then pre-

sented me with my first knife, an Americanmade Case knife with a bone handle and three blades.

Obviously, I could hardly wait to get back to school to show off my treasures. At home I took them off only long enough to oil them with waterproofing boot grease. My mother drew the line at sleeping in them, but she did consent to keeping them right next to my bed.

I have carried a knife with me pretty much every day since then, and frankly I don’t feel dressed without it.

Today I carry a Schrade Old Timer. It was one of the last ones the company made before going out of business in 2004 after a century of knife-making. My single Case knife is the large W.R. Case & Sons folding knife that I bought from a navy shipmate in 1962. Case stopped making knives years ago when the company was sold to Zippo Corporation.

And, truthfully, I would really like to have another pair of Gokeys. The ones with the knife holster.

Now and then something exceeds my expectations. Not often, but sometimes.

That happened last week in Lincoln Park for the Bicentennial Celebraplain talk tion.

Maybe you were there. If so, you saw Abe Lincoln himself in the gazebo, hand thrust forward holding the family Bible as he spoke against the evils of slavery.

You saw Mayor Tim Haak thanking Abe for stopping by again, reminding him of his last stop in Zionsville on his way to his inauguration in 1861.

You had free pie, free ice cream and free cake. Of course, somebody baked those wonderful pies (My Sugar Pie), and somebody served that wonderful ice cream (The Scoop).

Somebody provided that spectacular cake (Pearson Ford) and somebody baked it (Taylor Bakery).

I hope you took a good look at the cake, which boasted all the symbols of Indiana – the state flag, the state flower (peony), the state tree (tulip) and the logo of the Town of Zionsville.

You know the logo — the one the one that says “Zionsville … for all the right reasons.”

Well, I understand that motto now. “All the right reasons” for making Zionsville home were on display, right there in Lincoln Park.

Scores if not hundreds of fourth graders sitting quietly on either side of the brick walk waiting to learn both Indiana state history and to become part of it; middle school musicians filling the air with the audio fragrance of Gershwin; town council members, past and present, waiting to greet the bicentennial torchbearer; an honor guard; and the list goes on and on.

came at the end, of course. That’s when Zionsville Police Dept. Officer Josh Chapman, running in memory of our late and beloved Town Marshal David Effler, came running down the brick pathway to the gazebo.

There to meet him, in addition to dignitaries and Police Chief Robert Knox, stood David Effler’s widow, Pam. With Pam in the gazebo stood their son, Josh, and his wife, Mya, and their baby boy.

Guess what Dave and Pam Effler’s baby grandson is named?

Marshall.

That’s right. He is Marshall Effler.

Only in Zionsville.

Forget the cake, forget the pie. Forget that Indiana is officially 200 years old. Let’s just celebrate us – that we live in a town with so many “right reasons” to be here.

Happy birthday, Indiana, and welcome baby Marshall Effler.

making the move Cindy Palmer, a former Carmel resident, is the nonprofit’s co-founder and serves as the managing director. Palmer and her husband moved to the Brookside neighborhood in mid-May. Sarah Shaw, another ex-Carmel resident who serves as spiritual development director, also moved to Brookside. The neighborhood is called Covenant Community Housing.

There has been a Heart Change effort to buy up deserted homes in the Brookside area. A builder renovated the buildings for a very low fee, allowing them to rent the duplexes for some of the mothers and the children.

“There are four Heart Change volunteers, including me, living there,” said Palmer, who has four grown children. “There are a lot of things you can teach better as a neighbor. The idea is to have the mothers move into places where things are going to work right and the energy bills won’t be through the roof. The idea is the mothers are there to encourage one another. They can share things, like a lawn mower, and help one another. Our ladies live in surviving mode and we want them to live in thriving mode.”

Zionsville teacher serves inner-city mothers, children

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Cathy Dwyer has always had a soft spot for babies. That led the Zionsville resident to volunteer with Heart cover story Change Ministries.

“A friend of mine, Sarah Shaw, that was volunteering told me they needed help in the nursery, and that was the little hook that got me in,” Dwyer said.

Five years later she is involved way beyond that.

Heart Change Ministries was founded in February 2006 with the stated mission to help mothers in crisis and encourage them to be the women God created them to be.

“It’s a faith-based program for inner-city moms and preschoolers, primarily,” said Dwyer, who is now part of the nonprofit’s leadership team.

The target area is the Brookside neighborhood, on the east side of Indianapolis.

The faith-based nonprofit holds classes in the Oaks Academy Middle School, a former Indianapolis Public Schools building.

Classes are held Monday and Wednesday mornings for newcomers to the program.

“The longer they’re with us, we have a little more advanced class called Mothers University, which is three mornings a week,” Dwyer said. “There are basic classes for things such as parenting skills, health and nutrition and how to take care of their children.”

In addition, there is GED tutoring.

Dwyer said a free lunch is served after the classes, and even that becomes a learning exercise.

“Many of these moms never grew up eating around a table, so we teach engaging with your child,” Dwyer said. “We’re teaching basic life skills. Many of them didn’t have a loving mother themselves, so how do you learn how to take care of your own kids if you didn’t learn from your own mom? Most of them want to be good moms.”

Most are single mothers, Dwyer said.

Graduates from the program enter the work initiative, where they learn to make soaps.

The items are sold in a couple of boutiques in Indianapolis or during show home tours.

“Anything we make from selling the soaps goes back into paying the women,” Dwyer said.

The group gets referrals from Crisis Pregnancy Centers, some inner-city churches and the court systems. Most of the mothers are

between 17 and 30 years old.

“Most have dropped out of high school and want a GED or want to become involved in the program,” Dwyer said. “We’re trying to help them help themselves. It’s been an eyeopening experience.”

Dwyer helps volunteers in a variety of areas.

“I started out working in the nursery holding babies because I love babies,” Dwyer said.

“My son was out of the house, and it just grew and grew as you get more involved in the kids’ lives and the mothers’ lives. Now I teach a couple of classes, one for the beginning level, and one more advanced about relationships.”

Many of Dwyer’s Zionsville neighbors give her donated items for mothers. She also helps provide transportation to the school.

There is a full curriculum for the pre-schoolers. Dwyer has experience, as she taught high school French for several years. When Dwyer and her husband, Steve, moved to Zionsville 18 years ago, she became a part-time French teacher. She teaches one hour in the morning at Pleasant View Elementary before heading to her volunteer work.

“Most of the volunteers on the leadership team are between (age) 50 and 60 because the vast majority are in the same situation,” Dwyer said. “Their kids are raised and they’re in college or beyond. There a few exceptions to that.”

It sure doesn’t seem that long This isn’t gloating. It’s simply reflection.

We had more than a few people look at us, mouths agape, when we said back in 2005 we were going to launch a publishing company.

We heard, “Yeah, good luck with that,” “They’re going crush you like an over-ripened grape and spit you out,” and “This is the wrong time to do that, because newspapers are dying on the vine.” OK, thanks, got it. In truth, that actually became fuel to develop what shortly thereafter became Current Publishing, LLC. As some of you might know, we independently were working on plans to do this, when one of us crossed paths with a mutual acquaintance. He suggested we get together and mine each other’s thoughts. So we did that, and after 15 minutes it became readily apparent that with strength in numbers – to speak nothing of combining energies and knowhow – we just might be able to get this done. Sixteen months of market and reader research, and funding, legal, staffing and logistics work ensued, and – it seemed like overnight, truly – our first publication, Current in Carmel, arrived in the day’s mail of Oct. 24, 2006. Ten. Years. Ago. Our dream came true, and it continues to flourish in our second decade as a locally owned and operated business. We can’t even begin to explain how fortunate we are and how grateful we are to so many, including our readership, our advertising partners, our investors, our vendors, our research firm and, last but nowhere near least, our colleagues here at this humble enterprise. Add it up, and it all looks like this: You win with people. In the end, it’s that simple.

Getting to this point was anything but.

It was a dark-and-stormy night Oct. 19, 2006. We were busy assembling our first edition. Sometime before 10 p.m., everyone left for the night … except for Steve. He had a few more things to do (including an hour nap in his car at 2 a.m.), and that lasted only until about 6 p.m. the next day, when the paper was shipped for the press run … only approximately eight hours late. Brian was pacing with a stack of unpaid ad invoices and a calculator belching smoke. It was quite the scene. We were housed in temporary quarters, “Cubicleville” at the former Thomson USA building at West 103rd and Meridian streets. We met a See BACKSHOP | Page 17

Off to the races Commentary by Terry Anker With the rising sun, we all reach collectively for our smart devices. What messages arrived over night? What is the itinerary for the coming day? We run the rat race as if our lives depended upon it. Perhaps they do.

Whether corporally perilous or not, we can agree that we are all running somewhere – either toward our objective or away from it.

We move, always. Even as we think that we are standing still, we are carried along by those near us. As we consider it now, it all seems very exhausting.

So if we are all somehow tied to the race, how do we win – or at least try to keep up? Ask any experienced runner about their technique to victory and one will elicit as many responses as athletes asked. A sprinter will urge an immediate burst from the blocks and a full-on dash through the finish line. The distance runner might encourage a more methodical and deliberate approach to

triumph. Have a game plan. Execute on the plan. Win with the plan. OK, but how does it connect to us? Is life a marathon or a sprint? And if we figure it out, can we plan a strategy that makes it all a bit easier?

Conventional wisdom implies that life is a marathon and not a sprint. We are encouraged to hold back so as not to burn out too quickly. It all sounds reasonable, but sometimes it seems more like a relay race. Occasionally, we carry the baton. Other times, we pass it along for another to carry. Then we stand at the sideline and cheer them on – our hopes vested in their talent and dedication. Who knows? Still, if we are off to the races, shouldn’t we determine what kind of race we are running?

Are you superstitious? I am. I firmly believe that the only way the University of Louisville can win a game humor is if I wear my Cards T-shirt with a pair of Express jeans and abstain from Diet Coke for the day. And that hearing Rod Stewart’s “Forever Young” in full means a family member is pregnant.

I also never take chances with sidewalk cracks, tails-up pennies, spilled salt, or stupid black cats, for obvious reasons.

Why I am like this? After all, I’m fairly well-educated and can rationally acknowledge that a kitty sauntering across my path should have absolutely no repercussions on my day. Or that my moving one seat to the left at a Colts game shouldn’t make a bit of difference on whether or not T.Y. Hilton scores a touchdown. I know in my heart that these silly things don’t matter, and yet I can’t prevent myself from acting on them, anyway.

Part of my superstitious nature I blame on genetics. I am a ginger twin and have supposedly inherited special sensory connections to my sister, although it’s really only worked one time, and that was on her end. Furthermore, by all accounts, my maternal grandmother was “born under the veil,” and therefore had “the sight.” (I can’t explain what any of this means but it sounds cool.) And my mom is extremely intuitive; always knew when I was pregnant, even before me or Rod Stewart. So I’ve grown up with both an appreciation for trusting my instincts and the belief that “signs” foretelling the future do exist for those who choose to read them. Case in point: My daughter sang in a production of “Joseph’s Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” just one month before I was awarded a travel grant to the Middle East!

Anyway, I bring this entire topic up because the most superstitious (and awesome-est) holiday of the year, Halloween, is upon us. Weird things can and will happen, especially if you’re not prepared. So grab a rabbit’s foot, wear some garlic, and take care around mirrors. And if you hear “Forever Young,” congratulations! Peace out.

On New Year’s Eve 2006, we bade them farewell after sending the paper to press (on time!), boxing up all our worldly possessions and unplugging, maybe, four computers. We were headed for a more permanent home, the Old Town Shoppes at the southeast corner of East Main Street and South Range Line Road in Carmel. We all but outgrew that office in less than a year, but we hung in for nearly five, before moving to our now office/ home/world headquarters at 30 S. Range Line Rd. What a trip!

Colleagues have come and gone (fairly rapidly in the beginning as we strove to find our sea legs), but the one constant has been Dennis O’Malia. He has been a vital part of this operation since well before Day 1. Some might not know him as an advertising sales executive extraordinaire and the one who really gave us our “go like hell” tenet, but as a former owner of O’Malia Food Markets. We believe everyone associated with us comprises The A Team, to which we owe a massive measure of gratitude. Even though we can’t mention them all by name here - Brian, aka Mr. Drysdale (see: The Beverly Hillbillies), would faint from the newsprint expense - we seriously would

be remiss were we not to name the folks we call “our bosses in the office”: Zach Ross, our art director and production coordinator, who is far and away the most unflappable/unfazed human around when all hell is breaking loose; Andrea Nickas, our advertising artist, who just keeps quietly super-serving our advertising partners with high-quality and quick work, as does Lara Acton, our ad traffic manager (a job at which either of us would fail in a heartbeat); Raquel Dowley, our office manager, who has built in so many critical efficiencies and is as detail-oriented as they come; Sophie Pappas, our micro-managing (in a fantastic way) editorial director, and her managing editors, Ann Marie Shambaugh (Carmel and Zionsville), Sadie Hunter (Noblesville and Geist) and Anna Skinner (Westfield and Fishers). Those folks and all their associates/charges really are the ones that make Current go, and we tip our hats to everyone. We wouldn’t trade a soul from that lot.

Current’s circulation has grown from 26,000 households in 2006 to 125,731 today. We had planned for expansion early on, but each foray into a new market was accelerated at the behest of advertising partners – even through the recession. Today, in addition to Carmel, we are proud purveyors of what we call locallocal content - demanded by readers through research, the information you can’t get from a single source anywhere else - in Fishers,

Geist, Noblesville, Westfield and Zionsville.

That research allows us to provide the content package that resonates with our readers, who linger with the paper and view our advertisers’ messages 2.7 times per single issue.

It’s a powerful combination. Too, we have immersed as fully as possible in the communities we serve, especially in the not-for-profit arena. To date since our founding, we have donated in excess of $1.6 million to NFPs, and that never will abate; it’s part of who we are and that for which we stand.

We’re often asked, “What’s next?” It’s an excellent question. To be sure, there are other markets – near and far – to be conquered.

Time will tell. For now, though, here’s a toast to everyone – EVERYONE! – who made this possible, not the least of which are our incredibly understanding and supportive families. Without them … well, we won’t even ponder that.

It’s all extremely humbling.

Shanon Marks had been using essential oils for decades but said she didn’t realize the therapeutic value until more recently.

After losing her job more than one year ago, she began studying aromatherapy online and became a certified aromatherapist in April, opening a business tucked in the back of the Village Antique Mall at 45 S. Main St. “I wanted to be able to provide very highquality oils and blends to my customers,” she said.

Losing her job was the best thing that could have happened, she said, “because it pushed me to do what I really wanted to do.”

“Certain essential oils have different therapeutic results,” Marks said. She primarily receives requests for items to reduce stress but often also for concerns such as insomnia and allergies.

“Aromatherapy isn’t just about the aroma,” she said. “It’s taken people 30 years to figure out it’s not just about the fragrance. It’s about the therapeutic values of the volatile oils,” such as the calming and analgesic benefits of lavender, she said.

concerns so she can find the best solution to meet their needs. She said she hopes her customers will tell her if something doesn’t work so she can make adjustments.

Her location at the back of the antique mall allows privacy for her to converse with clients. Her shop is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday through Saturday, and appointments are encouraged for new clients.

Beginning later this month, she has planned workshops to help clients create their own simple items such as bath salts, personal inhalers and even homemade bug spray. Information is available at her shop and via email at greenone8@hotmail.com.

Young teacher works to inspire others through yoga

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com While many teens are characterized as moody and overdramatic, Anna Limauro is working on being the opposite. The 13- year-old yoga Creekside Middle School student, who recently became certified as a yoga instructor, is hoping to share yoga techniques with other teenagers to help give them confidence. “(For) relaxing and school and drama, they kind of need it the most,” she said In May, Anna registered with Yoga Alliance, the nation’s largest teacher registry, after completing the Torchbearer of Tradition program. The new program, created by Zionsville-based Blooming Life Yoga Studio owner Lily Kessler, is aimed at youth aged 12 1/2 through 18.

The Torchbearer of Tradition program was initially created by Kessler because Anna was interested in participating in the 200-hour adult program.

“She just seemed incredibly dedicated,” Kessler said. “She has this insatiable curiosity.”

Anna was first introduced to yoga through a workshop designed to increase girls’ confidence.

She started taking youth yoga classes, then taking it more seriously began attending adult classes in Zionsville and Carmel.

‘A safe place’

Ideally, Anna would like to incorporate the history and philosophy of the poses when she teaches and wants to bring the feeling of confidence and acceptance that she first learned.

“I could see Anna being a master yogi,” Kessler said. “She is very interested in the philosophical aspects and the ways that they link traditions, cultures and world philosophies together.”

Lily Kessler was concerned that some of the adult conversations would be “inappropriate” for youth and instead decided to create Torchbearer of Tradition, the first yoga program specifically for teens.

The 200-hour course covered everything in the adult program, but Kessler expected to keep the conversations at a less adult level.

But Kessler discovered that the teen conversations were tougher than some of her adult classes.

“It was such an eye-opener for me of what kids are going through,” she said. “They are surrounded by drugs, alcohol, huge peer pressure, risky behaviors, suicide.”

Kessler feels that the safe environment of the yoga studio helped the teens cope with decisions and offer others advice.

“They started to step above and witness what was around them rather than be entrenched in teenage drama,” Kessler said.

Why not do your part to keep this tradition alive by staging your own Halloween tailgate?

Here’s how to dress-up your tailgate in the Halloween spirit. Have orange and black Jell-O shots for the adults. Carve a pumpkin with your school logo. Have a tub full of leftover candy for passers-by. Have simple Lone Ranger-type masks for your guests.

Today, chocolate chip cookie cakes are extremely popular in supermarket birthday areas because they can be decorated like a cake. If you consider the sugar excesses of Halloween season, no one among us should fear the calories of icing and chocolate chips in their system. Here is a cookie bar recipe that can use up a lot of those little packs of Reece’s Pieces and has perfect Halloween colors.

PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE BARS Ingredients: 2 7.2 oz. Packages of Betty Crocker Peanut Butter Cookie Mix, 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons water, ½ cup peanut butter, 1/3 cup all-purpose flour, 1 cup Reece’s Pieces (11 trick-or-treat size 4.9 oz. bags) Instructions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cover inside of a 10 x 13 baking dish with parchment paper and lightly spray the paper with no-stick spray. Chop about ¾ of the Reese’s Pieces to expose the insides. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until light golden brown. At first the center will be a little soft.

Cool the cookie sheet on a wire rack for at least an hour or until the sheet is room temperature on its bottom. The longer you wait the more solid the bars will become. Next, grasping the parchment paper, slide the big bar rectangle onto a cutting board. Be careful because the large cookie/bar will be fragile at this point. Slide the parchment out from under the large cookie and cut it into 24 bars with four rows of six bars per row.

On game day, box the bars into a plastic sealable container for transport to the game and wait for the compliments.

Friends form theatre company

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Longtime friends Lynne Manning and Marianne Doyle have been talking about having their own theater group for 18 theater months.

It has now come to fruition as they have formed the Zionsville Little Theatre Company.

The first production, “Little Women,” will be held at the Whitestown Municipal Complex, 6210 Veterans Dr.. There will be shows 7 p.m. Dec. 16; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 17; and 2 p.m. Dec. 18. The seating capacity is 150.

“We’re looking at doing two productions a year at this point,” Manning said. “We’re seeing how we can expand into classes and workshops.”

Manning, who has served as a director at Off-Main Street Players in Zionsville, is the Drama Club sponsor at Zionsville West Middle School. Doyle’s speciality is costume design.

“Marianne has done several costumes for me for Off-Main Street Players, as well as for the middle school,” Manning said.

Manning and Doyle are producing the first show. Manning said they are exploring the possibility of becoming a nonprofit at some point.

Grace Church musical opens Oct. 28

The hit musical will be family fun directed by Amy Christie.

It focuses on the message that “love conquers.”

Grace Church’s presentation of “Beauty and the Beast” will focus on the power of transformation, as well as the lives of the various characters.

“The vision for the show Osgood is that true unconditional love has the power to transform lives. Seeing beyond someone’s exterior and into their heart is the way lives change. I believe this is a message the world needs to hear right now,” Christie said. “Love conquers. Engage with people that are different from you. Don’t let fear paralyze you. Listen, learn, love. It might transform them and it will transform you.”

This year, the “Beauty and the Beast” animated film is celebrating its 25th anniversary and, coincidentally, Grace Church is also celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The cast is composed of about 90 performers, ranging in ages from 8 to 70, and ranging in experience from beginners to Broadway performers.

“We really value that. We want people from varied backgrounds and at various ages,” Christie said. “There is something so beautiful as they all come together for a common goal and a higher purpose.”

Carmel High School senior Betsy Sandifer will play the roll of Belle. The Beast will be played by Noblesville High School junior Jon Osgood, most recently the winner of “Noblesville Idol.”

According to Grace Church, the last musical it produced, “Les Miserables,” was attended by thousands.

2. While the existing jetted tub functioned well, the tub deck needed a cosmetic update. The beautiful new wood-look floor tile was continued up the side and top of the tub deck, and a beautiful accent tile surround replaced the former outdated white tile.

3. The former alcove shower felt extremely small because of the limited amount of light and glass. The shower transformation included raising the shower ceiling, opening up one of the four walls, new tile, corner bench, large recessed niche and plumbing fixtures.

4. Other beautiful details, such as new framed mirrors, industrial light fixtures, granite countertops, undermount sinks, and oil rubbed bronze plumbing fixtures, were the perfect accompaniments to finish off the space.

Before Background Info: In conjunction with the fireplace remodel we featured two weeks ago, this 1990s Carmel home in the Brookfield neighborhood was in need of updates to the master bathroom as well. The homeowners were looking for the best design solution to combine function with style.

Before problems: The former master bathroom had efficient function and circulation space, but each area, especially the closed-off shower, needed updates to reflect the homeowners’ style and coordinate with the rest of their home.

There are two aspects to child custody—legal and physical. Legal custody refers to the ability to have input on medical, educational, and religious issues pertaining to a child’s upbringing. Joint legal custody is appropriate in most cases unless there is a significant breakdown in communication between the parties. Generally, as long as the parents are able to communicate and cooperate with one another on decisions involving the child(ren) without a high level of conflict, joint legal custody will be ordered and the parents are required to consult one another before making any of these “major decisions.”

The second aspect of custody, physical custody, is much more often the subject of dispute. Simply stated, physical custody refers to where the children spend their time. As an initial matter, parents may create a unique schedule which satisfies the needs of their children and each other. Often, however, developing a parenting time schedule can be very challenging. When parties are unable to agree, the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines provide a parenting time schedule that gradually increases parenting time as the children grow older, provides for a division of holidays, and allots time with the children should one parent live a significant distance from the children’s primary residence. It should be noted, however, that the Guidelines represent a minimum amount of reasonable parenting time to be afforded to the non-custodial parent. Often times, Indiana Courts will award a highly involved, non-custodial parent with parenting time in excess of the schedule that is provided in the Parenting Time Guidelines.

People often feel the need to “have their day in court,” believing that if the judge hears “their side of the story” the custody order will be in their favor. However, in evaluating whether to ask a judge to

make a ruling on custody and parenting time, the parties would be well advised to keep in mind that time in court is limited, and it is difficult to present all of the information believed to be important. A judge often has a limited timeframe to hear the evidence and limited remedies when determining a parenting time schedule. This is not to say that custody conflicts which arise should not be litigated.

However, once you decide to proceed to court, the final decision is out of your hands.

Finally, if parties are unable to reach an agreement, Indiana Courts will focus on the “best interest of the children” and in doing so will consider a number of factors in determining an appropriate custodial and parenting time arrangement. These factors include, but are not limited to, which parent has served as the primary caregiver; the child’s age and sex; the wishes of the child and the parties; the child’s relationship with each parent, siblings, and others; the child’s adjustment to their home, school, and community; and the mental and physical health of all involved.

Remember, there are a number of benefits to reaching an out-of-court agreement, including but not limited to, allowance for non-traditional work schedules, flexibility for holidays and more importantly the ability to decide and shape your future with your children. Being able to communicate and cooperate on these matters is a win-win for all involved.

Amritsar and independence Commentary by Don Knebel Amritsar, in northwest India, is the site of the Golden Temple, the holiest place on earth for followers of the Sikh religion. travel It is also the site of a massacre that played a key role in igniting the demand for Indian independence.

On April 10, 1919, violent protests in Amritsar led British Brigadier General Reginald Dyer to impose a ban on all public gatherings. On April 13, thousands of Sikhs in Amritsar for their annual Baisakhi festival, unaware of the ban, congregated in Jallianwall Bagh, a six-acre public garden near the Golden Temple, where they joined protestors knowingly violating the ban. Seeing the huge gathering as a threat to his ability to maintain order, General Dyer arrived at Jallianwall Bagh with 50 armed troops, who immediately and without warning began firing indiscriminately at the crowd. People tried to run, but their escape routes were blocked by either walls or British forces. Some people were crushed to death as they tried to leave. Others jumped into a large garden well.

The soldiers stopped shooting only when they ran short of ammunition. An official inquiry by the House of Commons, which led to the resignation of General Dyer, counted 379 unarmed dead and 1,200 wounded, including women and children. Indians have always believed the casualty count must have been much higher because of the large number of people in Jallianwall Bagh when the shooting started.

What became known as the Amritsar Massacre convinced Mohandas Gandhi to initiate the non-violent struggle that eventually led to Indian independence in 1947. In 1951, the Indian government erected a memorial honoring the victims of the massacre inside Jallianwall Bagh, near brick walls still displaying bullet holes. Perhaps the most poignant reminder is the Martyrs’ Well, with a sign saying that 120 bodies were found piled at the bottom.
