Ivy Tech Foundation recognizes Zionsville benefactors

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com A Zionsville couple recently was recognized by the Ivy Tech Foundation as Benefactors of the Year for philanthropy Central Indiana.

Rollie and Cheri Dick earned the honor after funding half of the expansion of the school’s Associate Accelerated Program, which allows students to receive an associate’s degree in roughly one year instead of two. Through the program, students receive a stipend to cover some living expenses, allowing them to concentrate on schoolwork instead of earning money.

“I think so often the challenges of getting a degree are insurmountable,” Cheri Dick said. “You have to work, you may have children, you may have other pressing demands.”

“I’ve had a passion for education for many years,” Rollie Dick said. “I think education is key to the survival of our city and our civilizations.”

The couple appreciates that the school offers a variety of educational opportunities for those who seek a degree and for those who simply want to add to their knowledge base.

“We love Ivy Tech and what it does for people,” Cheri Dick said. “We all have different skill sets.”

Longardner Scholarship for pre-architecture students at Ivy Tech. The scholarship was named after Cheri Dick’s father, who built the Stouffer’s Hotel, now home to the Ivy Tech Culinary Center, on North Meridian Street in Indianapolis. She noted that her father was particularly proud of the floor where the culinary school is now housed.

The couple has donated to causes throughout the city, supporting various educational, cultural and health organizations.

“I will enjoy Indianapolis better if it has a good symphony, a good IRT and a good hospital,” Rollie Dick said. “On the one hand, it’s philanthropic, and on the other hand, it’s enlightened self-interest.”

Recycled art market — The Boone County Solid Waste District will host Do it Again Recycled Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St. The event features twentyfive artists who create works of art from reclaimed items. There will also be a silent auction, education activities and makeyour-own-art tables. This is a free, familyfriendly event.

Father-son breakfast — Fathers and sons are invited to Zionsville All-Pro Dad’s Day Breakfasts. These monthly gatherings provide some father-son quality time while providing speakers at the same time.

Special prosecutor appointed in OWI case

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A special prosecutor has been appointed to handle the case of Zionsville Town Council President Elizacourts beth Hopper, who was arrested Sept. 25 and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Boone County Superior Court Judge Bruce E. Petit Landwerien on Oct. 16 appointed Shelby County Prosecutor Brad Landwerlen to the case. Boone County Prosecutor Todd Meyer requested the change.

“I am familiar with Ms. Hopper and her (ex-

husband), who is an attorney, and I occasionally go in front of the Zionsville Town Council for funding requests for my office,” Meyer stated in an email. “That said, I felt it was appropriate for my office to step aside in order to avoid any appearance of impropriety.”

Meyer also requested a special prosecutor in a case against Alan Wilhoite, a Lebanon farmer charged in September with criminal confinement, intimidation, Meyer pointing a firearm (unloaded) at another person and carrying a handgun without a license. Wilhoite is the husband of Marcia Wilhoite, a member of the Boone County Council.

Hopper was arrested after a Zionsville Police Dept. officer noticed her silver Subaru Crosstrek drive over a sidewalk and curb as it turned westbound on Hunt Club Road from southbound Ford Road in south Zionsville, according to a probable cause affidavit. A chemical test at ZPD showed she had a .221 blood alcohol concentration, which is more than double the legal limit.

Hopper was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, operating a vehicle with an ACE of .15 or more, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and public intoxication.

Hopper has petitioned for a specialized driving permit. A hearing on that request is set for Oct. 26. Her trial is set for March 19, 2018.

A nurse working in the Boone County Jail has been arrested for public safety trafficking Xanax to an inmate.

Boone County Sheriff’s Office staff members launched an investigation after they noticed four inmates appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance at apClark proximately 1:45 p.m. Oct. 2, according to a press release.

Investigators discovered that Denell C. Clark, 37, of Fortville, had allegedly distributed 15 to 20 2mg Xanax pills to an inmate.

Clark, who was working for Quality Correctional Care, LLC, confessed and said she brought the pills in from the outside, the press release stated.

Clark has been charged with trafficking with an inmate. Her bond is set at $10,000 cash or $1,000 surety.

Quality Correctional Care immediately terminated Clark and released a statement.

“The recent allegations involving our employee are both troubling and disappointing,” it stated. “After fully cooperating with the Boone County Sheriff’s criminal investigation, it is now clear that the recent allegations were the result of the isolated actions of one employee.”

U.S. District Court facing judge shortage

A shortage of judges in the United States District Court’s Southern District of Indiana has led legal system to a judicial emergency. Citizens have been warned to expect longerthan-normal wait times as their cases go through the system or even as they attempt to reach the courts by phone.

The district covers approximately the southern two-thirds of the state. In a 12-month period, its weighted filings per judgeship was 915, which ranks the court first in the circuit and second in the nation in caseloads.

The district has felt the effects of a vacancy since June 30, 2014, when Judge Sarah Evans Barker took senior status, a form of semi-retirement with the option for reduced caseloads. The judicial emergency was worsened by the deaths of Magistrate Judge Denise K. LaRue Aug. 2 and Judge Larry J. McKinney Sept.

21. They were both serving the Southern District of Indiana through senior status.

Chief Deputy Clerk Alison Chestovich said the district is trying to function efficiently despite the emergency and ensure everyone gets their day in court.

She said a long-term solution might include Congress adding more judgeships to the district.

Jay Kenworthy, a spokesman for Sen. Todd Young’s office, said Young has been working to quickly fill judicial vacancies. “(Young) has also spoken with Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Sen. Charles Grassley about the crisis in the Southern District and supports adding an additional judge,” Kenworthy said.

Judges from other districts and states have recently stepped up to help out. Judges from the Eastern District of Wisconsin and northern, central and southern districts of Illinois have been appointed to assist. Other judges from Indiana have agreed to increase their caseloads as well.

Lincoln’s ties to holiday explored Why Claghorn Custom Flooring?

When thinking about Thanksgiving, Abraham Lincoln likely isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. thanksgiving But when Lincoln impersonator Kevin Wood visits Zionsville’s Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library Nov. 2, that’s a connection he wants people to make.

Prior to 1863, not all states celebrated a day of Thanksgiving. Those that did often did so on different days. Author and editor Sarah Josepha Hale said the nation should have a national day of thanks andpetitioned several prior presidents, but with no luck. Eventually, during the Civil War she convinced Lincoln that the nation needed reasons to be thankful.

Wood will recount the story from Lincoln’s perspective and share an anecdote of the president’s brief visit to Boone County.

“People are always interested in Lincoln’s connection to their own area,” Wood said.

Normally when Wood portrays Lincoln, he reviews on the nation’s history and the former president’s personal story, often in schools and libraries. The history buff

began as a Lincoln impersonator in 2000 when people commented on his resemblance. It started as a hobby, and during the past several years he has been portraying Lincoln professionally.

“I had to grow into it,” the 51-year-old said of starting at a younger age. “If you can imagine Lincoln with no wrinkles, it just doesn’t work as well.”

Wood lives in Chicago, where he occasionally does his presentation in Spanish, although Lincoln only spoke a little German.

Registration for the 7 p.m. program is recommended at zionsvillelibrary.org. It will last about one hour and is open to anyone school age and up.

Walk adopts Halloween theme

The Howl-a-Ween bark for life Bark for Life is set for Oct. 28 at Creekside Corporate Park in Zionsville. Registration begins at 9 a.m. This is the second time the event has been held in Zionsville.

“The event was in coordination with the Zionsville Fall Festival last year, but due to some staff changes (at American Cancer Society) was postponed to a Halloween- themed event,” said Tatijana Marsee, community development manager for the North Central Region of the American Cancer Society. “Our goal is to have at least 50 people there and to raise a couple thousand dollars.”

Bark For Life is a fundraising event that honors the care-giving qualities of canine best friends. It presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companions and contribute to cancer cures through the ACS mission.

Rain garden has new home

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Eagle Elementary teacher Molly Haas, adding a rain garden is a great hands-on opportunity for her stueducation dents’ inquiring minds.

The Town of Zionsville approached Eagle Elementary about transplanting a rain garden from the soon-tobe-demolished former Town Hall building, Haas said.

“The goal of these gardens is to manage stormwater runoff and improve local water quality. In an effort to build student agency and empowerment, the fourth-grade students are taking charge,” said Haas, a STEM coach and teacher.

The garden soaks up rain water, which helps prevent erosion, Haas said. It was recently relocated to Eagle Elementary.

Haas said every student in fourth grade took part in the Problem Based Learning initiative to move the garden.

“The best part, thus far, is having a real-

world problem that students are working together to solve,” Haas said. “While we are working on specific science objectives and standards, other subjects have been naturally interwoven. It also gives students a chance to collaborate with each other, Eagle Elementary PTO/Dads Club and the community.”

Because the PBL required some physical labor, the Dads Club and PTO were involved, too.

Haas said by using a PBL approach, the students worked to answer the question: How can the students, as environmentalists, relocate the rain garden from Zionsville Town Hall to Eagle Elementary?

“Through the PBL, students will create a new design for the rain garden that will match our location constraints, ensuring that it will be a functional rain garden, planning short-, long-term, how to maintain a functional rain garden and communicate to the community the benefits that this rain garden will provide,” Haas said.

Boone Village to host party

The annual Boone Village Halloween Party will return from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 26.

The shopping center Halloween offers a safe trick or treating location for kids with a costume party, games and music.

Event organizer Leigh Ann Akard, owner of Akard True Value Hardware, remembers attending when she was a child decades ago.

“It’s a tradition,” she said.

Fourteen awards will be given for costumes, which will be judged at 6 p.m. First-, second- and third-place awards will be given in four age groups, ranging from infants to those 8 and older.

Some memorable costumes have included the Fall Festival carnival, Jeff Gordon and the hardware store’s popcorn machine.

For the top two age groups, ages 5 to 7 and 8 and older, a special award will be given, the Kids Imaginative Design Award.

“It’s the idea of giving the award to the child who you know made the costume themselves,” Akard said. “More the creative side.”

Mountain House to provide a safe place for young mothers in need

It helps women who are homeless or in volatile situations get back on their feet during the first year of motherhood.

Founded by Lori Buzzetti through her organization, So Big, Mountain House will provide shelter and food to expectant women for a year after their babies are Buzzetti born. Besides those basic necessities, the women also receive education, skills and guidance to plan their futures.

“Our goal is to be able to teach them life skills and get them connected with education and work so they can support themselves and their families,” Buzzetti said.

As an obstetrician, Buzzetti saw firsthand many women in “desperate situations.” In 2008, she started So Big to evaluate their needs and determine how best to provide support.

“When I was working at St. Vincent, God just laid it on my heart to create a home where women would feel loved, where they’d have a place to turn, where their families could be strengthened,” Buzzetti said. “There’s only so much you can do as a doctor. We would have women who were living in cars, or living from couch to couch each week, or some women who felt that abortion was the only option.”

It was after conversing with these women that she decided to create a maternity home similar to The O’Connor House in Carmel and Project Home Indy.

The Mountain House will accommodate four women at the Whitestown location and allow them to care for their infants while learning home management and financial skills. The women will be able to focus on a career or education knowing that their basic family needs are met.

The house is on Main Street and owned by New Hope Christian Church next door. The 100-year-old farmhouse has served as a home for missionaries and foster care. Through contacts at the church, Buzzetti learned that the church wanted to find a more permanent resident.

Each woman will have a private bedroom with a shared bathroom. The house has a large dining area, a threeseason porch, large backyard and community kitchen. A bedroom downstairs will meet disability needs.

While living in the house, women will receive child health and parenting advice from pediatricians and nurse practitioners. They also will learn to navigate food and medical

resources and services.

Each will be required to participate in the Transform Program developed by Wheeler Mission to guide the women in areas of self-awareness, conflict resolution and finances.

They also will be expected to assist with chores and find employment in the community.

“We want to work with them in identifying what their goals are, what resources and strengths they come with, and that may take some time,” said Jen Meyers, a So Big board member and clinical social worker at St. Vincent Primary Care.

Meyers said the women can discover a different direction in life as evidenced by success stories at other maternity homes.

“I think if somebody is given the opportunity for some stability, they’re able to focus on those things that can move them forward in reaching their longer-term goals,” Meyers said.

Prospective residents for Mountain House can be identified through social workers like Meyers or through life centers and other organizations.

Meyers said many of the women will form bonds, having come from similar situations where they might feel isolated or lonely. Many have lived in foster care or in generational poverty.

“When you sit down and talk to these moms, that’s sometimes how they grew up,” Meyers said.

Buzzetti’s goal is that through Mountain House the women will receive education and life skills needed to support themselves. She also wants them to find a relationship with God and discover a support system with their families and others.

“This is just about relationships, and that’s how you break that chain, is to pull people in,” she said.

For its first major fundraiser, So Big will host a formal event, Born to Sparkle, at Golf Club of Indiana Oct. 26.

The event also will serve as a celebration of the opening of Mountain House.

Funds raised from the ticketed dinner and silent auction will support the Mountain House. An anonymous donor will match what is raised up to $50,000.

“It’s a chance for people to find out the vision for what we want to do,” Buzzetti said.

The estimated annual budget for Mountain House is $200,000, which includes the salary for 24-hour staff members, food, clothing and supplies for infants and mothers. The budget is based on expenses from other maternity homes, although some of it might be offset by donations of items like diapers or coordination with food pantries.

In addition to the silent auction, funds will be raised through a Balloon Pop. Balloons can be purchased for various amounts, then at one point during the evening everyone will pop their balloons simultaneously and find a number inside. The number will correspond to a prize with a value similar to or above the amount donated.

A Fund a Need table will accept donations to purchase specific items, such as onesies or sheets.

Event organizer and board member Ashlee Brackett wants to also raise awareness and find volunteers to provide ongoing support for the house.

“If we can sell 300 tickets, that’s 300 people who are going to really have a firm idea of what we are about,” she said. “That’s 300 ambassadors that we can have then to spread the word because there are a lot of women in need, and we would love to be able to continue opening more houses. Lives are going to be changed.”

Most seats for the event have sold, but tickets and donations can be made through the website SoBig.org.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. with dinner from Maggianos at 7 p.m.

Ingredients (serves six): 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 4 tablespoons cold butter, 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup TruMoo Orange Scream Milk, 1/2 cup dried cranberries, 1 tablespoon grated orange peel Orange glaze: 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar, 1 tablespoon TruMoo Orange Scream milk Directions: To prepare scones: Heat oven to 425 degrees. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. With pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in eggs, one at a time, then milk, cranberries and orange peel. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Refrigerate 30 minutes, or until firm. Pat dough into 8-inch round, about 3/4-inch thick. Cut into six wedges; carefully separate wedges and place on parchmentlined baking sheet about two inches apart. Bake about 15 minutes until lightly golden and crusty. To prepare orange glaze: In small bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar and milk until well blended. Cool scones slightly. Drizzle scones with glaze.

Ingredients (serves six): 1 loaf (16 ounces) sliced raisin-cinnamon bread, 2 cups TruMoo Orange Scream Milk, 3 large eggs, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon grated orange peel 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon orange extract, 1/8 teaspoon salt, Confectioners’ sugar Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cut raisin bread into 1-inch pieces (about eight cups). In large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, orange peel, nutmeg, orange extract and salt. Toss with raisin bread to mix well. Butter a two-quart casserole or baking dish. Pour bread mixture into dish. Place in center of deep, ovenproof pan. Pour boiling water into pan until it reaches halfway up sides of dish. Place pan on center rack of oven. Bake until just set, about 40 minutes. Carefully remove from oven. To serve, sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. Serve warm.

In a lifetime of work, some things go well and some things proceed not so well.

But, if we are lucky and persevere, one can manage to pull together a bit of success.

A few find themselves having built a most impressive operation – highly productive and well-regarded by all who bear witness.

One might imagine that such a person would naturally expect to be granted suitable compensation for such success. But, all too often, it doesn’t work out that way.

Income disparity and performance variability are the hobgoblin of our modern age.

Shouldn’t the hardest-working and most intellectually adroit merit the highest gratitude in our society?

If one is not properly appreciated (because of gender, address or otherwise), how can it not be appropriate to ask why?

In these many years on the planet, most of us come to know that humans are selfinterested. Scottish moral philosopher Adam Smith wrote that most of us care more about the splinter in our finger than the death of a million in China.

We all have internal and external motivators. Certainly, there are times when the external motivators are weak. However, we have enormous sway over what and how motivation comes from inside. Taking measure of our own worth is incumbent only upon us – it is derived from within and unknown to others. Do blaming others for not seeing our worth fall to them? Or, does the responsibility to be noticed and treated fairly end with ourselves? Their perspective may make our challenge difficult. Yet, mustn’t we learn and value our own contributions because few others ever will?

Well, I experienced another near-perfect storm the other night. Not enough sleep, a long day at work, anxiety over humor driving a mini-bus with eight teenagers to West Lafayette the following morning and a Community Night filled with detailed descriptions of 75-plus marching band movements, four alumni award presentations and a litany of “thank yous” during which I may have actually dozed off. By 9:15 p.m., I couldn’t hold back the complaining, eye-rolling or phone Solitaire wave of exhaustion and impatience.

Doo did not find me entertaining and handed me the keys. Message? “If you can’t pull your shtick together right now, leave. This is about our daughter. And the car I might win.” Fine. His stinky breath was driving me bonkers, anyway. And yes, I told him.

The problem is that when I’m severely sleep-deprived and “stuck” at an event, I completely ignore everyone else around me and focus on how awful I feel. I can usually buy time by retreating to a bathroom, but often I just revert to rudeness. I simply cannot control the expressions on my face or the words that come out of my mouth, even though I know they are hurtful and/or disrespectful. It’s total decompensation.

Through the years, Doo has learned to recognize the signs and does his best to “handle” me before I go Chernobyl. I must have been throwing off major radiation warnings because after five more minutes of me pouting (I couldn’t actually leave; I’d just have to come back for him), he called the ball. I was home in bed within minutes.

So despite the near-perfect storm, the Danielle Wilson did not sink. Thanks, Doo! Peace out.

A salute to apples Commentary by Ward Degler Honeycrisp apples are back on the store shelves. I can think of no better name for these beauties. Sweet, tart and crisp in one globular plain talk fruit.

Today, we buy Honeycrisps in small, pre-packaged containers or, at some stores, one at a time. Pricy things, but oh, so tasty!

The Honeycrisp is another in a long line of apple varieties developed by the University of Minnesota’s Horticultural Research Center in Minneapolis. Folks up there have been messing around with apples for a long time.

A few years ago they came up with the Haralson, also sweet, tart and crisp.

I fell in love with Haralsons when I lived in Minnesota. So much so, that I loaded a young Haralson tree into the back seat of an airplane and flew it back to Indiana.

Unfortunately, it couldn’t stand the hot Indiana summer and died.

Another apple that is popular just about everywhere is the McIntosh.

Minnesota had nothing to do with this cultivar, however, since it has been the national apple of Canada since 1811.

When I was a kid we bought apples by the bushel, always from the local orchard. Mostly, they were Maiden Blush,

Jonathon or Black Twigs. Maiden Blush originated in Philadelphia in 1817. Black Twigs came from Tennessee and were reportedly Andrew Jackson’s favorite apple.

Jonathons showed up either in 1796 in Ohio or in 1826 in New York. Both states still claim birthrights to this day.

Back home at harvest time we would drive out to the orchard and load up the car with as many bushels as we could cram into the back seat and the trunk.

Mom always made a couple apple pies at harvest time. Then we meticulously wrapped the remaining apples in newspaper and stored them in a barrel that we kept in a dark corner of the cellar.

When dinner was over and the dishes were washed and put away, I would trek down to the cellar and bring back an apple for every member of the family.

Around the first of March the apples began showing signs of age. The good ones were wrinkled. Others had rotted, and I had the job of cleaning out the barrel.

My wife and I still enjoy an apple every evening.

After the dishes are done, of course.

I’m at a loss to understand why people camped out for days for the opening of the new IKEA store in Fishers. humor Back in the good old days, you could wait in your house for UPS to deliver your online furniture purchases … instead of sleeping in a tent on the cold concrete and missing the latest episode of “Will and Grace.”

I’d like to tell you about a one-night stand. No, I didn’t have a one-night stand.

I bought one online a few years ago, and it required assembly. Every piece in the kit was assigned a letter. All the grooves were numbered and there was an actual picture of all six kinds of screws and nails.

This instruction manual was in three languages: English, Spanish and French.

That was an immediate distraction for me, because the phrase “Avec precaution, retourner l’element sur ses chants avant” sounds a lot sexier than “Carefully turn your unit over and onto its front edges.”

I’m not good with tools. The directions said I needed a Phillips screwdriver. That would be equal parts vodka, orange juice and Milk of Magnesia, right?

This night stand’s manufacturer provided a hotline number — answered by the very same kind of people who respond to those life-and-death turkey questions on Thanksgiving morning. One year, I abused that phone number after downing a couple of wine coolers. I called to ask if I could take a frozen turkey in the sauna with me to defrost it. It’s hard to make those folks laugh.

After I got my bedside table assembled, I was pretty happy with myself, although it didn’t look exactly like the photo on the box. Mary Ellen thought it was the biggest birdhouse she had ever seen.

I went to the newly opened IKEA yesterday to see if it might make a good subject for one of my TV segments. I had an appointment with the district manager. When I entered his office, he said something I know he’s said a thousand times, but it still made me laugh.

“Come in,” he said. “Please make a chair and have a seat.”

BACA actually owns four centers: 2 in Fishers, 1 in Zionsville and 1 in Elkhart. BACA Zionsville (often referred to as BACA Z) opened in October 2012.

Dr. Carl Sundberg and Devon Sundberg are the co-owners of the Behavior Analysis Center for Autism.

The center is full of light and open areas and includes individual therapy rooms, group therapy rooms, a large lunch room, motor room with occupational therapy equipment, client computer areas, the Geof Mohs Memorial Garden and a functional living area with a restroom for training shower skills. BACA Z offers outings to develop functional living skills. BACA Z is designed to serve all ages (2-20+) in one location. NET, OT and speech are offered at this location.

The Behavior Analysis Center for Autism opened its doors in October 2009. BACA was established by Dr. Carl Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA-D, and a group of highly trained Board Certified Behavior Analysts who have been working with Dr. Sundberg for several years.

Dr. Sundberg studied under Dr. Jack Michael and received his Ph.D. from Western Michigan University. He now oversees the training of all the staff at BACA and consistently spends time with the clients.

Ciao by Il Villagio restaurant on Main Street will become Convivio later this year. Owner Emilio Cento wants to complete construction by November.

“Everybody’s refreshing,” he said, citing several local restaurants that have undergone makeovers and changes recently. “I just thought that it was time to redo it.”

Cento started the Italian restaurant Il Villagio in 2003. He changed it to Ciao by Il Villagio when a new landlord purchased the building several years ago.

He and a friend, Andrea Melani, intended to update the Zionsville location more than a year ago until a building in Carmel presented itself. So the duo instead brought the concept to a new restaurant, Convivio, which opened in November 2016 at 11529 Spring Mill Rd. Cento hopes the first anniversary of the Carmel restaurant will coincide with the opening in Zionsville.

ing will be redone, exposing some of the natural brick and opening the rooms. He plans to have a semi-open kitchen and will rework the balcony, added by Cento almost a decade ago.

The addition of pizza and an area to sell fresh pasta will be the biggest additions to the new Convivio location.

Passersby will be able to see fresh pasta being made in the front window of the building.

The dinner menu will be the same at both locations with the exception of a lunch menu only available in Carmel. The menu changes every few months featuring a different region of Italy using fresh ingredients and pasta.

Talking about knees and hips Commentary by Dr. Khalid Azzam No one wants to see his or her parent in pain, and it can be difficult to know how to help. Here are some tips for talking with an aging parent about hip and aging knee replacements.

What are signs I should talk with my aging parent(s) about a hip or knee replacement?

If your parent is visibly in pain or frustrated that simple daily tasks have now become painful and uncomfortable, then it’s time to broach the topic. Hip and knee arthritis is a very common reason for pain in individuals ages 60 and older. If your parent has everyday pain in the groin, front of the thigh or in the knee, they should make a consultation.

A lot of patients think too long before deciding on a hip or knee replacement. Pain from hip or knee arthritis, after reaching a certain stage, is unlikely to go away. If your parent is considering joint replacement, encourage him or her to make an appointment to learn more.

How do you suggest approaching that conversation?

Make sure your parents know you’re

coming from a genuine, caring place. Before having the conversation, educate yourself so you can provide helpful information.

What’s the process like for a hip or knee replacement patient?

In the first visit, patients will talk with their orthopedic surgeon about the pain and how it has affected their daily life, and they’ll get X-rays. A physical examination of the joint will be performed, and the surgeon will review the X-ray photos with the patient. If the patient is a good candidate for hip or knee replacement, he or she will pick a date for surgery. As the surgery date approaches, the patient will visit his or her orthopedic surgeon to discuss the procedure.

Patients also meet with a dedicated internist at this time to make sure they’re “medically cleared” for surgery and anesthesia. After surgery, patients have a series of follow-up appointments with their orthopedic surgeon.

Whimsical artist to visit

By Heather Collins editorial@youarecurrent.com Zionsville’s CV Art and Frame will host the whimsical world of Brown Countybased international artist painting Gabriel Lehman Nov. 3 and 4. Lehman’s artwork celebrates child-like wonderment and playfully features stop-motion, film-like characters.

“I work in character form because it’s fun for me. I’ve always loved cartoons and I try not to take things too terribly seriously,” Lehman said. “I keep it light and fun.”

Lehman said he utilizes cinematicstyled lighting, hidden light sources and exaggerated colors in the shadows of his artwork. Lehman sticks with what he knows and draws inspiration from sunrises, sunsets, cooking utensils and things that make sense in his world.

“I can always go there and paint something. Even if I don’t feel inspired, I can always paint something from my world,” Lehman said.

Musician writes score for Holocaust documentary

Ashton Gleckman, a 17-year-old musician from Carmel, wrote the score for a new Holocaust docufilm mentary set to premiere in Indianapolis Nov. 2.

The film, “Hidden,” tells the story of children who were hidden during World War II. The movie, directed Gleckman

by Gi Orman, focuses on five child survivors from Poland. There are some re-enactments, filmed in Poland with actors, of the stories told. The filmmaker brought two of the survivors back to Poland to see where they once hid.

Orman said he plans for the 72-minute film to be a teaching tool. It comes with a curriculum for several different grade levels.

“It really teaches people a topic that hasn’t been touched on a lot,” he said.

Gleckman has been playing music since he got his first guitar at age 7. In 2015, he scored a Holocaust documentary film called “Once Upon a Family: The Saga of Polish Jewry,” which was produced by Project Witness, which also produced “Hidden.”

Orman met Gleckman from the previous Project Witness documentary and brought him on board for “Hidden.”

Gleckman wrote the score but found a violinist to add the right tone.

“For ‘Hidden,’ it was all about translating the heart of the film into a musical voice,” Gleckman said. “‘Hidden’ is filled with truly extraordinary stories of heroism, loss and coming out of dark situations on the other end. The music (is) needed to assist in telling that story.”

After completing his sophomore year at Carmel High School in May, Gleckman was withdrawn from school by his parents to allow him to pursue his film and film music interests full time.

Orman and Gleckman will be at the Indianapolis premiere, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Keystone Arts Cinema. Admission is $18 and the original score can be purchased for $5.

Soup for late fall Commentary by Joe Drozda and Bob Bley In cold weather there’s nothing better than soup, and here’s a very easy soup to make that will bring all tailgaters back for seconds.

Italian Wedding Soup Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 cup diced onions, 1 cup chopped carrots (1/4 to 1/2 inches chop), 1 cup chopped celery (1/4 to 1/2 inches chop), 10 cups chicken stock or broth, 1/2 cup dry white wine, 1 1/4 cup small pasta, 1/2 teaspoon dill weed, 10 oz. bag baby spinach washed and trimmed, 24 oz. bag Johnsonville Classic Italian Style Meatballs (pre-cooked) Preparation: Pre-heat oven to 350. Dice onion, carrots and celery and set them aside, mixed, in a bowl. Wash spinach, cut off the stems and set aside. Bake meatballs according to the package directions. When meatballs are done, cool enough to then cut into halves. Put olive oil into a heavy large soup pot on medium low heat and sauté onion, celery and carrots until soft (5 to 6 minutes). and add the wine and chicken stock as you bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and add the pasta and cook until it is tender (6 to 7 minutes). Before

Background Info: This home, built in 2003, is in the Foster Estates neighborhood on the east side of Carmel. Although the home is still fairly new, the basement lacked overall functionality for the owners and their children.

Before problems: The original layout of the basement did not have clearly defined areas to entertain and because of this, the basement was underutilized. The space appeared much smaller and confined than it actually was. Overall, the space was dated and needed an update.

After

The owner’s goal was to give the basement an update that allowed for them and their children to entertain guests comfortably and better utilize the space they had available.

1. Removing the built-in entertainment system gave the owner the space to add a home theater with creative storage solutions for electronics.

2. Expanding the doorway to the neighboring game room and adding sliding barn doors created a more open concept while making both rooms appear larger.

3. Defining a space with a couch, fireplace and TV created a cozy space for the owner to watch TV and relax, even when the theater was being used.

4. Additional changes included adding a paneled wall and door to hide the electrical room, relocating the workout area and updating the bar area.

Twin statues near Luxor, Egypt, originally honored an important pharaoh. They became famous for their erroneous association with a mythological king. travel Pharaoh Amenhotep III, the grandfather of Tutankhamen, ruled Egypt between 1388 and 1351 B.C., a period of great prosperity and cultural achievement. He was remembered with a massive mortuary temple complex on the west bank of the Nile River. Identical statues of a seated Amenhotep, each 60feet high and carved from a single block of sandstone, guarded the entrance to his temple. How the Egyptians transported the 720-ton statues hundreds of miles from their quarry site when they did not have the wheel remains a mystery.

Over time, annual Nile flooding destroyed most of Amenhotep’s mortuary complex, but the statues survived. When Greeks under Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in the fourth century B.C., they assumed the statues represented Memnon, a mythological Ethiopian king famous for helping defend Troy during the Trojan Wars. They

named the area Memnonium and called the statues the Colossi of Memnon, names they still bear. In 27 B.C., an earthquake toppled the upper half of the northern statue and people began reporting high-pitched singing emanating from the base at dawn. They attributed the singing to Eos, the goddess of dawn and mother of Memnon, mourning her son’s death at the hands of Achilles. Visitors came to the singing Colossus from all around the world, seeking divine guidance. Hearing the singing meant good fortune. In 130 A.D., Roman Emperor Hadrian visited the Colossi after the death of Antinous, his lover. Although his traveling companions heard singing, Hadrian did not.

Sixty years later, Emperor Septimus Severus did not hear the singing and repaired cracks in the northern statue’s base. No one has heard the singing since. Scientists believe dew in the cracks, drying in the morning sun, created the sounds.
