Memorial nearing completion

Progress is being made on the Veterans Memorial outside the Whitestown Municipal Complex. Limestone REMEMBRANCE blocks to be engraved to honor each military branch have arrived and are in place. The memorial is being built by three Zionsville teens as part of their Eagle Scout project.

“It’s such an exciting project and the Boy Scouts have just done a phenomenal job taking this from concept to reality,” said Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown. “These young men have conceptualized the whole project, met with landscapers, brick makers and stone masons, started GoFundMe pages and set up booths at many events to sell bricks.

It’s very exciting to see young people with such determination, and it’s exciting that this is a project that will benefit the entire community, bringing much-deserved recognition to local veterans and their families.”

The memorial stones were part of Scout Luke Pishon’s portion of the project. He said it’s exciting to see the stones being installed.

“It was something that I have been work-

ing towards for over a year,” he said.

Scout Luke Revercomb has undertaken the landscaping. He anticipates his portion of the project will be complete within a month if all goes well.

“I think seeing it actually take shape is really satisfying,” he said. “There have been months and months of background work to get us to the point we are at, and seeing it come closer to completion makes me feel good knowing I have helped the town and especially the veterans of Whitestown.”

Chris Luciana is in charge of the third aspect of the memorial – the engraved paver bricks honoring local military. Materials for his portion should be delivered this month with a completion target date of early November.

“I think it’s great to see the project go from an idea to reality, and I think it’s even better that it will benefit Veterans,” Luciana said.

The Scouts’ goal is to create a place where residents can reflect on the sacrifices made by local veterans and active military members.

The plan is for the project to be complete in time to be unveiled and dedicated Nov. 11, which is Veterans Day.

Festival of Lights to celebrate diversity

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com The second Festival of Lights celebration and Indian Food Fair is set for 6 to 9 p.m.

Nov. 3 at the Whitestown MuCULTURE nicipal Complex gymnasium.

The event drew more than 800 people from around central Indiana last year.

“Once again this year, we’ve got people coming from many surrounding communities, such as Carmel and Greenwood, who tell us they are excited about the Whitestown Festival of Lights because there’s nothing like it anywhere else in central Indiana,” said Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown.

The goal of the festival - hosted by the Whitestown Human Relations Commission is to celebrate the growing Indian culture in Whitestown.

“Our Asian Indian population is our fastest-growing demographic,” Sumner said. “We thought it would be fun to help promote awareness about this beautiful, colorful culture through the authentic dance performances and food that is part of this event.”

Vishnu Koneru, a Realtor and Whitestown resident, helps organize the festival and is a member of the Whitestown Human Relations Commission.

“A lot of cultural dances and music are involved,” Koneru said. “We have a platform for various sponsors to showcase what they want to bring as well as different artists. It’s totally organized by volunteers and the Whitestown Human Relations

Koneru agrees it’s nice to bring diversity into the community, educate people and share Asian Indian culture with others.

“I’ve been out of my (home) country (of India) for almost 16 years. I’ve never had a town come together to celebrate an Indian festival,” Koneru said. “It’s a phenomenal opportunity. We feel like people here are open to understanding and embracing the culture.”

The festival is free but those interested are encouraged to register ahead of time becasue space is limited.

“If we are at capacity, people will have to wait to enter,” Sumner said.

Hunt had wanted to open a second store for years.

“I looked at a lot of different locations over the last three years or so,” Hunt said.

“Then in May of this year, I started really looking at the Fashion Mall at Keystone.

When a space became available that was the right size and location, I went for it.”

The new boutique is in the Saks wing of the mall and has the same aesthetic as the Zionsville store.

“The new location is smaller than the Zionsville location, but the design concept is the same,” Hunt said. “The same fixtures were designed and fabricated.”

Hunt offers designers not traditionally found in Indianapolis, such as Jagger shoes, FRNCH Paris, Keepsake, The Jetset Diaries, Evidnt and Lucca.

“The key to me was to be able to provide really good quality at a great price point, but also sell items that had a classic look with a very modern twist,” Hunt said.

Hunt orders select pieces for each store.

When sold, they aren’t restocked.

“I don’t necessarily re-order, so it keeps the merchandise looking fresh and something that you’re not going to find on everyone else in town,” she said.

Hunt wants the items she sells to easily incorporate into women’s wardrobes.

“I buy individual pieces so you can add them to what you already have,” she said. “I don’t necessarily buy entire outfits. It gives you the opportunity to mix that in with older things in your closet.”

The mysterious case of casein Commentary by Ward Degler Here’s something I thought I knew: “Casein paint is illegal.” It isn’t. Let me wander back through time to sort out how I came to that conclusion.

PLAIN TALK Back in the early 1950s when I was a young art student, I was enamored of the wholesome illustrations in the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines by illustrator Ben Stahl. That, I realized, is what I wanted to do. So, I dug up as much information as I could about my hero and set my sights on becoming a famous illustrator.

Ben’s medium of choice was casein, an ancient paint made from milk protein and lime. For many of his illustrations, he used casein white paint with watercolors for rich, full-bodied colors.

I traipsed off to the art supply store and bought a large tube of casein white and got busy imitating Ben Stahl. I did lots of paintings. Some good, others not so much.

A couple years later, I needed more casein white. The clerk at the art store shook his head ruefully and said they couldn’t sell it anymore.

“It is illegal,” he said.

I never questioned it. I just switched to oils and later to acrylics. They were OK, but I missed those mellow colors I got with casein.

Last week, I mentioned to a friend that I used to paint with casein but didn’t anymore because the paint was illegal. He said he’d never heard of such a thing. I decided to look into it.

I read everything I could find on casein paint. But nary a word did I find about the stuff ever being illegal.

Throughout the centuries. casein paint has been used to paint interior walls of buildings and has been a favorite medium for murals. It enjoys a lasting quality of color that even oils and egg tempera don’t have.

I’ve learned a lot from this. I no longer accept anything as gospel without doing my own research. Even when it comes from someone working in the hallowed halls of an art supply store.

A reflection on McKamey’s Village Pharmacy Commentary by Donna Monday I’ve been here more than 40 years and as the saying goes, “I’ve seen ‘em come and I’ve seen ‘em go.”

TOWN HISTORY That’s especially true of Main Street, where businesses have cycled through, year after year, decade after decade. Only one departure brought tears to my eyes. I cried when I heard that McKamey’s Village Pharmacy was closing. Life changed when Joe and Cheri McKamey left the coveted corner of Cedar and Main.

Anybody in this town who is 45 or older will remember McKamey’s. It was where we started our days. It was like something right out of the ‘50s, a “Happy Days” come to life. McKamey’s carried everything.

Need a prescription? Check.

Want coffee, tea? Coke? Check.

Breakfast? Check.

Lunch? Ditto.

Toys? Film? Aspirin? Easter basket?

How about a post office? McKamey’s sold stamps before Walgreen’s even thought about it. A post office box sat on the pharmacy counter. You could leave your mail in the box and a carrier would pick it up.

Donna and Kenny Klinger worked the soda fountain. Years before Starbucks, Donna knew what we regulars wanted. For me, it was a morning Coke, sometimes with a splash of vanilla, sometimes with lemon.

Donna would see me entering the back door, catch my eye and ask, “Lemon or va-

nilla?” That’s how my day began for years.

People packed the place every day. Everybody in a 5-mile radius wanted to start their day at McKamey’s.

Now residents of Florida, Joe and Cheri were in town not long ago, so I grabbed the chance to ask them about their memories.

I especially wanted to know what they remembered best about the place.

“The camaraderie,” Joe said. “(Patrons) were waiting for us to unlock the door,” Cheri said.

The lunch crowd all had their favorite places to sit among the booths and bar stools.

“By golly, you didn’t mess with that,” said Joe, adding that sometimes people would tell the offender that he or she was sitting in their seat.

Joe and Cheri owned the pharmacy from 1975 to 1988, when it was sold to Patricia and Harland Hotham, who operated McKamey’s until 2002. I’m glad I was here.

I’m especially glad my children, who also remember businesses like Rainbow Video, were here. I’m glad they knew such a time and such a place and saw such camaraderie, to use Joe’s perfect word for hanging out with people you love in a place you’ll always remember.

“The eating was almost secondary to the conversation we were supposed to have and how we interact with each other,” Major said.

Connection and interaction are at the center of Glass’ goal, for youth in particular.

“They need to be able to have something tangible to hold onto, not just a fleeting Instagram picture,” she said. “We just don’t communicate person-to-person anymore.”

Glass is a fast talker, constantly in motion answering phone calls and questions from her staff. She has had a variety of careers, including fashion designer, radio show host and owner of a sports marketing company.

“All of the things in the tea room are a portion of what I have done with my life,” she said. “We tell the stories here.”

Serenity Café celebrates 10 years on Main Street

“When you come in, COVER STORY you know this is a different place,” said Karin Glass, owner of Serenity Café and Tea Room on Zionsville’s Main Street.

A visit to the cafe is not simply about taking the time to drink tea and converse, which Glass believes is an important aspect.

The environment promotes civility, which Glass feels is missing in society. It’s what prompted her to create Make America Smile, a grassroots group to promote kindness.

“It takes more to (expend negative energy) than it does to smile,” she said.

Nov. 4 marks 10 years since Glass first opened Serenity. Today, she maintains a consistent menu of family recipes. She said customers would be upset if she changed items. Instead, she offers daily specials for those who want variety. As a member of Indiana Grown, her kitchen utilizes mostly local resources.

“Tea is not a fast-food sport. It’s sharing a conversation with others,” she said.

Soon after opening, Glass began hosting mystery dinners and etiquette classes.

Eventually, wine dinners were added. For the cafe’s 10th anniversary celebration, Glass has special events planned from Oct. 27 through Nov. 10. Past events, like decorating sugar skulls and painting, will return for the anniversary.

Serenity is one of the few places in the Greater Indianapolis area that offers etiquette classes. Glass is like a drill sergeant during the class, quickly identifying when students’ elbows are on top of the table or if silverware is held incorrectly. She also

suggests conversation starters, asking students what they would do with $100,000 or what one thing about themselves they would change.

University High School’s Personal Finance class attended an etiquette session to help students prepare for interviews and create a positive first impression.

“I wanted personal finance to not be just personal finance,” University teacher Mike Hagen said.

Student Eric Major attended the course and recalled that much of the etiquette is not centered around food but around communication, which he said is an art form.

Framed thoughts

Legislative paralysis in Washington, D.C.

Commentary by Terry Anker Each week, the origination of this very column comes from a template – not of the ideological sort but rather of the functional. It arranges concepts into a consistent and comfortably editable form. Its headers remind of the hoped date of publication and the exact number of words. It also urges the suggestion of a title, while the ultimate choices rests with the crack editorial staff.

It is all format over function. It does not write this column or even frame it with the germ of an idea. It sits, like a ruined city, with an outline of what might be but little image of what should.

Would it be better to start each anew? Could an absence of any expectation lead to more creative and compelling thinking? Like openmic poetry, it could meander only to the contentment of the deliverer, safe in the notion that the platform was without constraint. But then, isn’t there beauty in brevity? Don’t we best communicate within the outline of some accepted form? A template brings order and ensures needed structure.

Still, if the template is too thorough, does it become more an administrative form desperately seeking modest and redundant information? Does its very limited scope pre-determine that the thinking produced by it will be equally banal and correspondingly uninspired?

Is an editorial outline too simple as a metaphor for our lives? Perhaps. Yet, don’t we each begin with a simple template, staring blankly, urging us to fill with action? We are born with any number of gifts and debilitations. From there, is it we that control the framing or it that controls us? Too much constrains and too little fails to liberate. Can we find our voice within the confines of a reasoned structure?

Finally caught a break Commentary by Danielle Wilson I’m on the brink of something wonderful, friends. Tomorrow starts a week-long fall break for the school district HUMOR where I teach, and neither my kids’ break nor my husband’s vacation days overlap — which means I have five days of doing whatever I want without the needs of my family sucking me dry, at least from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a Christmas miracle come early.

So, I’m sitting here blissfully planning how I shall spend each little nine-hour slice of heaven. Netflix and Hulu will fill a good portion, as I am behind on a few of my favorites. I’ve also got a basement full of the demonically possessed to empty as I prep for the best suburban Halloween graveyard within a 5-mile radius (I am, of course, excluding the Trumpkin-Pencekin house down the road, with which I simply cannot compete. Bravo to you, whoever you are.

Your display is truly terrifying!). I had “Grade Papers” on my list for a hot minute, but let’s be honest. A box of Kleenex and “This is Us” are calling. Quizzes can wait.

What I’m most looking forward to is downtime. The not rushing around after work to drop a kid at practice, swing by Meijer for yet another gallon of milk, and then throw together a Kraft box dinner that no one will eat, anyway. I don’t have to get out of bed, I don’t have to shower, I don’t even have to put on clothes. OK, maybe I need the clothes, but who says they must be clean?

Not this gal! Nope, I can just slow down and enjoy something wonderful. A break.

Editor, We find it strange that Republican Congresswoman Susan Brooks can get so little done when Republicans control the White House, both Houses of Congress, and also trying to control the U.S. Supreme Court.

It seems like Rep. Brooks is a victim of her own party. She can’t get anything done because, well, they won’t let her.

For instance, Rep. Brooks has introduced at least 39 bills, according to the legislative record found in Google. Out of those 39, only three have become law. And only three others have become amendments to existing law.

Sure, it’s easy to criticize just to be criticizing. Rep. Brooks has what we found to be a dynamic and impressive record at Ivy Tech.

Her work in the educational field was lauded as exemplary while she was at Ivy Tech.

So what happened to her in Congress?

Why has her party held her back?

We believe Dee Thornton is that new voice needed to pursue meaningful efforts for change, and to keep alive the institutions that serve us best: health care, gun ownership and safety, the massive impact of environment on our oceans and atmosphere, education and student loan burdens that affect our young people.

Mary Ellen and I decided today to make a reservation somewhere for the upcoming New Year’s Eve. Last year, HUMOR I waited until Dec. 31. A little last-minute, but I did leave a voice message first thing that morning.

I called one place and the manager said, “We start booking after Nov. 1, but don’t wait too long. Some loser called last year on New Year’s Eve morning.”

For fun, my wife and I tried to see if we could remember what we did every New Year’s Eve. We were doing well until we hit 2000.

“Dick, we went to French Lick to celebrate the Millennium.”

“No, Mary Ellen, the Millennium was technically 2001.”

“You are wrong about that and I refuse to have this argument every thousand years.

OK, what about ’99, Dick?”

“Wasn’t that the year we took your sister to dinner?”

“I don’t have a sister. I thought that was your sister. How about ’98? We got a bottle of Champagne and walked hand-in-hand through the park. Wait, maybe that was

Rick in ’88.”

I became clear we had not been invited to a New Year’s Eve party at someone’s home in many years.

“I think,” Mary Ellen said, “it’s because one of us talks endlessly about how television has changed over the years and how hard it is to write a weekly humor column.”

“Do I do that, Mary Ellen?”

“Talk about insecure! I didn’t say it was you. Hey, why not have a New Year’s party this year? After all, we have a new house.”

“I’m sure not going to invite a bunch of ungrateful, selfish people who didn’t have the courtesy to include us in their past celebrations.”

“Wow, Dick, let’s keep that Christmas spirit right through the New Year, OK?” If you are reading this column and have never invited us to your house, I can give you the name of a great restaurant. Just be sure to call after Nov. 1.

Hit-the-Bricks turns 36

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com For 36 years, the Zionsville Optimist Club has organized an annual 5K and 3K run/ walk called Hit-the-Bricks as a RACE fundraiser for the organization.

This year’s race took place Oct. 6 at Zionsville Community High School with more than 300 participants.

“Thirty six years and no rain,” said Elaine Morrison, co-chair of Hit-the-Bricks.

The event provides funding for youth sponsorships provided by the club. Each May the ZOC awards a $4,000 scholarship to a ZCHS student at Senior Awards Night, funded largely by Hit-the Bricks.

“What is so great about our run/walk are the number of youth who participate,” said Morrison.

The club estimated that 125 youths participated in this year’s race.

The race’s name is derived from a portion of the course that takes the runners onto Zionsville’s brick Main Street. The course starts at ZCHS and goes onto the Rail Trail, through the Village, then heads to Main Street and circles back to ZCHS for the finish.

“That lot is a prime location, on the south side of Whitestown Parkway, close to Main Street. That’s why the KFC was interested in that location back in 2008,” Sumner said.

“But that’s when the Recession hit, causing the entire Anson development here in Whitestown to stall for several years.”

Sumner said shops selling the same products in such close proximity isn’t that unusual.

“In fact, we’ve seen it happen several times here in Whitestown,” she said. “For example, we’ve had several nail salons, pizza restaurants, pet supply stores and dental offices open within fairly close proximity to one another, and within a fairly short time frame. The free market will decide which businesses will endure for the long term.”

Sumner said a third tire store, Belle Tire, also is interested in Whitestown. It would be off I-65 along Perry Worth Road near the new WoodSpring Suites Hotel. Plans for that shop will go before the Whitestown Plan Commission in November.

Humperdinck to make Palladium debut

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Born Arnold George Dorsey, he took a new name, courtesy of a manager, that no one ever forgets.

CONCERT Legendary English pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck will make his first appearance at the Palladium at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The tour features songs from his 2017 album, “The Man I Want To Be,” which also is the title of one of the songs.

“I think that’s one of the best albums I’ve done in a while because it has a lot of new songs on it,” Humperdinck said. “It’s not doing somebody else’s material and making it your own. It was a different approach for me this time.”

The album includes a slower version of Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are.” Humperdinck’s new Christmas album, “Warmest Christmas Wishes,” was released this month.

“At the end of the year, I should be releasing a PBS special which I did in Hawaii (this fall),” Humperdinck said.

His concert will include his major hits.

“I can’t do a concert without doing the standards that made it possible for me to be here in the first place,” he said. “It’s a show that has been tried and tested around the world.”

At 82, Humperdinck isn’t slowing down.

“People keep saying to me that you’ve been in the business, are you going to put your feet up or hang your hat up?” Humperdinck said. “I say I don’t even know what that means. I just want to continue until I can’t sing anymore. But I can sing. My voice is as strong as it was when I first started.

It hasn’t lost any of its value. When you get older your vibrato gets a little slower, but mine hasn’t. It’s become a very contemporary voice, which I really love.”

Humperdinck performs 80 to 90 concerts per year.

“Each time I walk on stage it’s fabulous,” Humperdinck said. “I don’t think there is a feeling better than being appreciated by the people sitting there watching you perform.”

Archivist earns national certification editorial@youarecurrent.com Great American Songbook Foundation Archivist Lisa Lobdell was recently named to the national Academy of Certified Archivists, a designation that supports and promotes the highest level of professional archival standards and practices.

Lobdell has served since 2010 as archivist of the Foundation’s Songbook Archives & Library, which houses more than 100,000 documents, images and historic artifacts.

Lobdell an Indianapolis resident, established the Foundation’s physical archives and continues to manage the acquisition of new collections, curate gallery exhibitions, supervise volunteer docents and oversee increasingly important digital preservation efforts.

Lobdell took the Archival Certification Examination during the Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting in August in Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Society of American Archivists, the Society of Indiana Archivists, the Midwest Archives Conference and the Association of Recorded Sound Collections.

Humperdinck said his fans span a large age range, which has expanded his audience.

“If you have one age group, they disappear,” he said. “But with my kind of audience, it’s three or four generations, and it’s just unbelievable.”

Humperdinck made his splash in 1967 with his version of “Release Me.” “That one song gave me my career,” he said. “It doesn’t happen very often in today’s world.”

The song was No. 1 for six weeks in March and April 1967 in the United Kingdom, keeping The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” from reaching the top spot.

“It stopped the Beatles from having their 13th No. 1,” Humperdinck said. “This unknown person came along and stopped the almighty Beatles. It’s been a great stepping stone in my life. It was No. 1

around the world and gave me a global career immediately. My style stands out from all the others and it was unusual for a balladeer to come into the charts and remain there and be fortunate to have about $150 million in album sales around the world.”

Some of Humperdinck’s other major hits include “The Last Waltz” and “After the Lovin.’”

His manager Gordon Mills took the name Engelbert Humperdinck from a German 19th century opera composer.

“Mills developed a stable of singers, including Tom Jones and Gilbert O’Sullivan and myself. Between the three of us, he had a pretty good British team of horses,” Humperdinck said. “The only thing I would have liked to have had was a middle initial because it did belong to the man who wrote ‘Hansel and Gretel’ (opera). I would have liked to have the variation. I am a doctor of music. I should put a doctor in front of it.”

Butler University Director of Bands Col. Michael Colburn will return to his roots.

Colburn served with the EVENT U.S. Marine Band, dubbed “The President’s Own,” for 27 years, including the last 10 as director.

“I’m looking forward to working with the group again,” Colburn said. “I’ve had a couple of chances to guest conduct them since I retired in 2014, but those opportunities don’t come very often, so this is really special. The chance to do that in our new home of Indianapolis is going to be a lot of fun.”

The U.S. Marine Band, which was formed in 1798, will perform a concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Tickets were free and all were quickly distributed.

“I’ve got a group of 40 or so students coming to the concert,” Colburn said.

Colburn played the euphonium for nine years and then was the assistant director for eight years.

“The current director, Jason Fettig, served as my assistant during my entire time as director, so we worked very closely together,” Colburn said. “So, I’ve been proud to see what he’s accomplished. Plus, I still know many of the players and ensemble as well. We stay in touch with one another.

I’ve been watching what the band has been doing since retirement with great interest and enthusiasm.”

Colburn will conduct the band for a rendition of composer John Williams’ “The Adventures of Han” from the movie, “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

“Our relationship with Mr. Williams began when I was an assistant director and we were trying to find someone to come in and guest conduct for one of our major anniversaries,” Colburn said. “I invited him on behalf of the then-director. That started a relationship I’m very happy about.”

Colburn said Williams served as Marine Band guest conductor several times during Colburn’s tenure as director.

“He actually did write a piece for the band shortly before I retired, called ‘For the President’s Own,’” Colburn said. “I was really excited to have one of our most famous composers writing a piece for the Marine Band.

I’ve done a lot of Mr. Williams’ music, as you might imagine, but I’ve never conducted this (piece) before since it was part of the soundtrack of the movie that came out this summer. I’m looking forward to learning the piece and taking it for a test ride with the Marine Band.”

Colburn said there are several differences. For instance, the average age of Marine Band members is approximately 35.

“The first thing I told the members of the Butler Wind Ensemble is I didn’t ever expect them to sound like the Marine Band. That wouldn’t really be a realistic expectation,” Colburn said. “I’ve enjoyed working with young members for many years. Even with my time with the Marine Band, I did a lot of guest conducting with high school and college ensembles. My father was a high school band director, so I’m no stranger to education.”

Group to run literary art park editorial@youarecurrent.com Residents of Indianapolis’ northwest side will soon be able to enjoy a neighborhood literary art park, thanks to a recently launched crowdfunding PROJECT campaign.

Sponsored by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and offered through the crowdfunding platform developed by Patronicity, the campaign is being run by Brick Street Poetry, Inc., a nonprofit based in Zionsville.

“Developing a long-term passion for the arts begins at a young age,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch stated in a news release. “By taking a vacant, underutilized space and giving students the knowledge and support to create literary art is truly innovative.”

If the campaign reaches its $5,000 goal

by Dec. 8, the “Neighborhood Literary Art Park” will receive a matching grant of $5,000 from the IHCDA’s CreatINg Places program. As of Oct. 17, more than $2,600 had been raised.

At the end of the series, workshop participants will create a piece of art to be displayed within the park.

“We’ve worked in virtually every type of venue in Central Indiana and far beyond over the years, and we have shared poetry with about every demographic,” Brick Street board member Dan Carpenter said. “But owning a piece of land and building a sanctuary and launch pad for literary and related art is a new adventure for Brick Street and a real stretch of our imagination — and fund-raising ability. We’re confident the community around Paris Avenue, the children and youth and their mentors, will drive this partnership to success if our hands and ears are open.”

Greene, Carmel, and Debbie Slack, Carmel, specialize in oil paintings. Marie Reamer, Carmel, does fine art photography. Nancy Keating, Carmel, is a mosaic artist. And Randall Scott Harden, Noblesville, is an impressionist oil painter.

Harden joined as a partner in September.

“We have some new artists we’re excited about,” Greene said.

New artists include Wesley Dallas Merritt, Westfield; Wendy Franklin, Carmel; Yuri Okamoto, Indianapolis; Amy Greely, Nashville; and B. Skinner, Battle Ground.

There are 18 artists in the gallery.

“We have a wait list, but we are always looking for good local talent,” Greene said.

The annual Lion Costume Contest

Reamer said the foot traffic is best later in the week and weekends. She said the gallery walks and other events in the Arts & Design District help bring in business.

“We’ve provided space for some new, talented artists and we made it through the year. That’s a good accomplishment,” Reamer said. “We did really well. We had a great first year.”

Greene said she is proud that the gallery has kept the quality high and how the partners have meshed.

“We all have different backgrounds and experiences,” Greene said.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday.

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 110 W. Main Ave., Carmel What to get: The PBB&J burger Price: $12 Anna’s take: The PBB&J combines the best of both the savory and sweet worlds.

A thick, meaty burger is layered with mild Monterey Jack cheese, candied bacon slices, and strawberry preserves. A sea-salted peanut butter is smeared on the bun. I’m a little late to the peanut-butter-on-a-burger game, but this was an excellent choice to introduce me to the delicacy. The Pint Room lets you choose between a variety of sides, and

I’m a sucker for sweet potato fries. In addition to the stellar food, The Pint Room’s bar has a unique ambiance, with the names of all its current beers listed on a chalkboard.

Beer taps line the walls behind the bar. It’s definitely a burger-and-beer joint, and it didn’t disappoint. If you aren’t a fan of red meat, The Pint Room offers some salads, different sandwiches and a variety of appetizers as well.

Suggested pairings: The Pint Room has 100 rotating taps and 24 core taps, so you’re bound to find a beer you like. A few options to pair with the PBB&J burger would be a Sun King Cream Ale or a Workingman’s Pilsner from Fountain Square Brewing Company, both core taps always offered at The Pint Room. If you’re one for darker beers, try pairing the Founders Breakfast Stout with the PBB&J burger. Porters pair well with red meat, and the sweet beer complements the strawberry preserves.

Behind bars: Gin Gimlet Get it at Sun King Spirits, Carmel Ingredients: 3 oz. No Mean City gin, 1/2 lime, squeezed, 1 oz. simple syrup, soda water, cucumber wheel Directions: Shake gin, lime juice and simple syrup in tin with ice.

Strain over ice, top with soda and garnish with a cucumber wheel.

Blueprint for Improvement: Basement finish in Westfield Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal of this basement finish was to create a functional floorplan that allowed for entertainment, relaxation and recreation.

1. Designing a floorplan that worked for the homeowner was the first step in this large transformation. An entertainment area, office space, bedroom and full bathroom were incorporated into the final design.

2. In the entertainment area, a stacked stone gas fireplace and built-in cabinetry and shelving were added.

3. The entertainment area also included a wet bar, finished with new cabinetry and a cement tile backsplash, making it a perfect place to host guests.

4. A home office was created and designed to be easily separated from the rest of the basement with a sliding barn door.

5. An extra bedroom and full bathroom were added to the basement for guests.

Background info: Located in the Merrimac neighborhood in Westfield, this mid ’90s home was the perfect place for the homeowners to raise their family. Although the home hadn’t had many updates, it still functioned well with the exception of the basement.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The challenge for this project was space planning to create a new finished basement. The unfinished basement was mostly used for storage and kids’ recreation. The family was missing storage and needed a good layout that created separate areas that met current and future needs.

Couldn’t — or could? — care less Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I care approximately zero about owning a watch. I can’t imagine (at this point where our phones GRAMMAR GUY rule our lives) ever needing to own a watch. I don’t care about them as fashion accessories, nor do I need to have one as a status statement. After I take a watch off, my arm hairs all stand at attention as if the commander of the arm hair army is passing by.

So, should I say, “I could care less about watches,” or, “I couldn’t care less about watches?”

I should correctly say, “I couldn’t care less about watches.” This implies that my level of caring about watches is already so low it may as well be nonexistent. It’s not possible for me to care any less about owning a watch. Even nerdy calculator watches are redundant at this point unless you’re wearing one, ironically. And I don’t really see the point in the smartwatch.

With my smartphone, I have no need for a watch. As a man who wears male clothing, my pockets are big enough for my wallet, phone and Burt’s Bees lip balm.

Don’t get me started on pockets and gender privilege. It’s totally a thing. Men have an upper hand even when it comes to functional, amply sized pockets.

When you say, “I could care less,” it implies that you can, in fact, care less.

Unless you’re using this phrase sarcastically, you’re using it incorrectly. “I could care less about humans,” the uppity housecat yawned to herself. First of all, that cat can talk! Secondly, she’s implying that she has the capacity to care less about humans, even though she has not exhibited any evidence that she has ever cared about humanity (with the exception of when she’s hungry).

Perhaps the key to reducing our anxiety and stress is to start caring less about things out of our control. We get so consistently worked up about the littlest things.

On the other hand, maybe you couldn’t care less about this entire topic. If that’s the case, you’re already ahead of your time.

Sizing up Crater Lake Commentary by Don Knebel Although its bottom lies about a mile above sea level, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and the seventhdeepest in the world. It was TRAVEL created by an extraordinary geologic event that the descendants of eye witnesses still talk about.

For 400,000 years, volcanic eruptions in an area about 80 miles northeast of Medford, Ore, created 12,000-foot-tall Mount Mazama. Approximately 7,700 years ago, the volcano erupted with a force more than 100 times greater than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, spewing out 3.5 billion cubic yards of molten rock. As continued flow emptied the magma chamber at the base of the mountain, the center portion of the mountain collapsed into the void, forming a caldera, or crater, more than 2,000 feet deep and 6 miles across. Rain and snow then began filling the hardened lava crater.

After approximately 250 years, the water escaping through evaporation and seepage equaled the amount coming in, stabilizing

the resulting lake’s surface at 6,178 feet above sea level, with an average depth of 1,148 feet. Because no ground water enters the lake, its water is purer and clearer than that of any other lake on Earth, allowing light to penetrate 144 feet, twice the distance of alpine lakes. The depth and clarity contribute to the vibrant blue color of what was originally called Deep Blue Lake.

Archaeologists have determined that members of the Klamath tribe of Native Americans lived near Mount Mazama when the violent eruption created Crater Lake, which they came to regard as sacred. Seventy-five of their sagebrush sandals were found beneath volcanic ash in a nearby cave. Members of the tribe still repeat stories about the falling mountain, whose essential details match geologists’ explanation of how Crater Lake was formed.
