Councils approve tax increase

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Boone County residents will pay more for public safety beginning in January as a proposed local income tax increase republic safety ceived approval from six city and town councils at a special meeting Oct. 11 at Lebanon High School.

With the Boone County Council approving the .5 percent rate increase in September, only the Lebanon or Zionsville council needed to approve it for it to take effect. Lebanon voted 4-3 in support, making the tax increase official with three councils still to vote.

After Lebanon’s vote, the Whitestown and Zionsville town councils voted unanimously to approve the tax increase, but Zionsville Town Council President Susana Suarez said the town plans to file an amendment in early 2017 that would sunset the tax in seven to 10 years.

“Anytime you increase taxes, there should be some level of accountability for the taxpayers to know that you’re doing this in such a serious way that you’re willing to revisit and reassess whether those funds are still needed,” Suarez said after the meeting.

If Zionsville approves the amendment, either the Boone County Council or Lebanon City Council would also need to approve it for it to take effect.

The town councils of Advance and Jamestown voted unanimously in support of the tax increase.

Thorntown councilors voted 2-2, with the clerk-treasurer voting in support to break the tie. The Town of Ulen did not send representatives to the meeting.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen spearheaded the effort to adopt the tax increase. He spent months meeting with county officials and residents to explain why he believes it is the only way to address public safety staffing shortfalls throughout the county and meet other needs.

He said advocating for the tax was “the most important personal and professional journey

that I have ever and will ever take in my career.”

Those efforts will lead to an expected $4.5 million for Boone County next year.

Before the vote, dozens of Boone County residents shared their thoughts on the tax increase during a public hearing.

Joyce Douglas of Lebanon was among many residents who urged the councils to reconvene at a later date to consider a smaller tax increase.

“It’s time to live within our means. It’s time to think of everyone, not just government employees. It’s time to think of taxpayers,” she said.

Among the supporters of the tax were several members of law enforcement and fire departments in the county, including Advance resident Trevor Davids, who works in the county jail. With current staffing levels, only two officers are in the jail at one time.

“I live in fear at times in the facility I work in, because I only have one person helping me at times,” he said. “When there’s three of us, it feels like we just hit the lottery.”

Nielsen’s five-year strategic plan for implementing the LIT includes hiring eight additional merit deputies, 10 corrections officers, three courthouse deputies and one communications officer for the BCSO. He said he expects to spend 2017 filling those roles, with the public seeing a significant difference in service in 2018.

Proposed liquor store site concerns some

Whitestown Pkwy. that would include a multi-tenant building. Payless Liquors is the only announced tenant.

Residents in the nearby Stonegate and Maple Grove neighborhoods said they were surprised when they learned a liquor store was proposed in an area near several schools and neighborhoods with young families.

“This store would be directly on the path that my kids – and hundreds of others – travel each day to get to and from Boone Meadow, Stonegate and Zionsville West Middle School,” Maple Grove resident Chris Winebrenner said. “Not only might it pose a safety risk, but frankly, I don’t think my second grader and preschooler need to see a liquor store every time we drive to and from school.”

Stonegate resident April Brown said families in the area would prefer to see a family-friendly business.

“It would be nice, since they’re putting crosswalks up, to make it something that families and kids can go to,” Brown said. “A liquor store tucked in between two neighborhoods really doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

Whitestown Director of Planning and Community Development Lauren Bailey said she has received numerous comments from residents echoing those concerns, as well as others.

The site was zoned General Business in 2007, and its permitted uses include liquor stores. Bailey said that when the plan commission considers the concept plan on Oct. 17 it cannot deny the petition based on a liquor store being proposed at the site.

She said the commission may table the issue to give the petitioner time to meet with residents and address concerns. The Whitestown Plan Commission is scheduled to discuss the matter at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17.

State law requires that alcohol sales not happen within 200 feet of a school or church. Bailey said this proposed location is “a lot further” away than the requirement.

The liquor store is expected to be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and employ 10 people.

Representatives from developer KLC Realty did not return a call for comment as of press time.

Girl Scout project benefits library

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Girl Scout Troop 1817 was looking to create a legacy project to help the community. With a little giving back brainstorming they came up with a plan to not only benefit other Girl Scouts but also the HusseyMayfield Memorial Public Library.

“As the girls get older they can do different service-level projects. You can do a service project or what we call a take action project, which means that the project becomes sustainable at some level beyond them,” Troop 1817 Leader Debbie Forbeck said.

The troop combed through Zionsville on foot to determine who they wanted to help.

“I literally had the girls walk around town.

From there, we had a brainstorming session and they came up with different ideas of what to do,” Forbeck said.

They chose the library. Scouts met with leaders at the library to determine their needs.

“One of their greatest needs was to have more volunteers and more people exposed to the library.” Forbeck said. “It was a way to get more people involved in the library and have other Girl Scouts do a service project at the same time. When troops go to the library to

find out about this badge, they’ll do a service project for their library.”

“Once a Girl Scout completes the program, they’ll get a patch that our troop helped design with the library. We actually bought all the patches for the library, as well. We had an anonymous donor who donated the funds for us,” Forbeck said.

Halloween party set for Oct. 27

The Zionsville Community High School jazz band will kick off the festivities with a performance at 5:20 p.m. Akard True Value will grill hot dogs that can be purchased for a small donation to its Pumpkins for a Purpose fundraiser. Each pumpkin is painted, and proceeds from votes go to the organizations represented. The event also includes a costume contest with winners in several different age groups.

Requiem for the necktie Commentary by Ward Degler It started with my first professional job as a newspaper reporter. And it continued throughout most of my plain talk career: Attire at work was coat and tie.

There was a routine to it back then, a daily process that became part of the work ethic. It went like this: I snugged my tie in place before I left the house. I preferred a full Windsor knot, but a four-in-hand was also acceptable. In the car, I hung my jacket from a hanger in the back seat to keep it from getting wrinkled. At work, I put it on and buttoned it with a single button as I entered the office.

Greetings and good mornings all around, to the receptionist, the janitor setting up wastebaskets for the day’s collection of detritus and litter, and to secretaries and co-workers.

At my desk (this is the good part), I took off my jacket and hung it over the back of my chair. Then, I sat, rolled up my sleeves and loosened my tie. Let the day begin.

At lunch the process was reversed; snug up the tie and don the jacket. Back at work the sleeves went up again and the tie knot was jerked loose. Back home at night everything got hung up until the next day.

I had a collection of ties back then and wore a different one each day. And, yes, anyone who

didn’t know what to get you for Christmas bought you a tie. I never received one with a hula girl on it, but I knew guys who did.

This is what working America was like for guys back then. I worked for one company where only white dress shirts were sanctioned. Another that disallowed light-colored sports coats. The constant in all places, however, was the necktie.

I’m not sure when it changed. It’s just that one day I went to work and all the guys were wearing golf shirts. A couple years later it was T-shirts and jeans. The president of a company would walk into a staff meeting wearing a tee that announced he was the World’s Number One Dad. His kids knew that, but I’m not sure we needed to.

I feel a little sorry for guys today. They no longer have special rituals to get them through the workday. Once they’re dressed, they’re good to go. It’s simpler I suppose. Still, there was a sense of authority, commitment and determination that came with removing your jacket, rolling up your sleeves and loosening your tie. You knew and the world knew you were ready to meet the job head on.

A store of this negative connotation and in that location is not appropriate. It is not in keeping with a residential area.

It is easy to understand that there will be an increase in traffic that will directly and negatively impact residents who use the en-

trance to Maple Grove. Noisy trucks will be unloading shipments, too. Furthermore, a liquor store can bring possible robbery and other crime to the neighborhood. It will not have a good impact on property values either.

A meeting to (discuss) this store will be held on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Whitestown Town Hall on Whitestown Parkway. We expect further protests and negative fallout if Whitestown Town Hall continues with its decision to allow this building to take place and they ignore the residents’ complaints.

While many teens were hanging at the pool this summer, 16-year-old Sophia Joelle was in Los Angeles on the set of The music Voice singing for Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton. “I was just really excited,� she said. “I felt I prepared really well and was just excited to do it after so long of waiting.�

Joelle sang as part of the show’s blind auditions. Her road to LA started with an audition for producers. “I got the opportunity to audition in Chicago and thought, ‘Why not? The Voice is a big show,’� she said.

Joelle’s segment aired Oct. 3 – the last night of the blind auditions. Her mom, two sisters, a sister’s boyfriend and a cousin watched from backstage as she sang Sia’s Elastic Heart. “I love Sia and the fact she does pop, but her lyrics have a lot of meaning, which isn’t common in pop now,� Joelle said. “The song has a lot of character and meaning to it, so I thought it’d be an awesome song to sing for audition.�

What she didn’t know as she sang was only Cyrus had a spot left on her team. In the end, no chairs turned for her. “The first thing she (Cyrus) said is ‘America is going to love you when they see you. You’re so cute.’ Adam spoke a lot to the fact I was so young and had time to keep developing,� Joelle said. “Alicia was so down to earth and said I was so brave to come out here and do this at 15, that it was part of my journey, and I’d go on to do great things. Blake didn’t say much, but when I was shaking their hands he gave me a big hug and said, ‘That was amazing.’�

made the show, Joelle said she wasn’t too disappointed because she knew 96 other singers who auditioned weren’t shown at all.

But don’t expect to see Joelle audition for the show again. “It was an awesome experience, but for me, at least, it was a one-time experience,� she said.

For now she’s writing songs, focusing on school – she’s a sophomore at Zionsville Community High School – and enjoying show choir.

Her biggest takeaway from The Voice: “I think probably the confidence to walk away from something like this even though I am not on a team or on the show, and I know I did my absolute best and not being disappointed with that.�

Newly published 1947 memoir unfolds history of Village home

By Heather Lusk • news@currentinwestfield.com It’s a story that began nearly a century ago and wasn’t shared for more than 60 years.

“Bonnie Knoll: The Tale of a Home cover story That Grew” chronicles the life of Grace Monroe, who passed through Zionsville with her husband after World War I, purchased a house at the corner of Sixth and Pine streets and named it Bonnie Knoll.

The story could easily have remained unknown. The Monroes never had children, but doted upon a young girl next door.

When Grace and Charles Monroe died within three days of each other in 1963, the neighbor girl and her family inherited several of their possessions, including Grace’s memoir.

When those neighbors returned to Zionsville seven years ago, stopping by their old house to reminisce, they were curious to also see Bonnie Knoll. They contacted Marianne and Guinn Doyle, who purchased the home in 1999, and were given a tour. Before leaving, they mentioned Grace Monroe’s memoir and asked if Marianne Doyle would like to see a copy. She responded with an enthusiastic “yes.”

Doyle said she received it a few months later and dropped everything.

“I walked around the house reading it,” she said, recognizing certain areas of the home being described.

“It’s a charming little book,” Doyle said, who added that she shared it with friends, who insisted that it would be interesting to others.

Doyle worked through the necessary paperwork to obtain the copyright and began trying to find a publisher.

There was some interest in the manuscript, but as Doyle was asked to change the words or to add sections, she protested.

“This is her book, not our book,” she said. “We can’t lose Mrs.

Eventually, Doyle opted to have the book self-published to ensure the content was preserved.

“It’s been a real adventure for me, and I’ve protected Mrs. Monroe’s voice,” she said.

She worked closely with a local editor, illustrator and font specialist who used examples of Grace Monroe’s handwrit-

Charles and Grace Monroe were on their way to Indianapolis in 1922 to look at a lot on which to build their dream home. Road construction detoured them through Zionsville, taking them past an empty house. Inquiring at the bank whether it was for sale, they happened upon the physician who had very recently purchased the home but hadn’t yet moved in. “I’ve never had anything I wouldn’t sell,” he said, according to the memoir.

Soon after the purchase, the Monroes discovered, with some shock, that they had purchased nearly four acres of land. The book describes their home improvements, raising chickens, leaving their home during the Great Depression so that Charles could find work in Virginia, and their life during World War II. Grace Monroe wrote the memoir in 1947. According to the book, she and her husband spent later winters in Florida but always returned to their “labor of love,” Bonnie Knoll.

“They had a very homey, warm, comforting vision for this book,” said Mike Ficarra, who created the book design. “I tried to carry that through.”

“I had no clue what this process was like,” Doyle said. “It’s been really interesting.”

Throughout the book, Monroe never mentions Zionsville by name and keeps the identity of the town’s citizens quiet as well.

“When you read it, she makes sure it’s not personal,” Doyle said.

“I know all those names, because I did the research for it,” said Doyle, such as a person who recalled the house’s foundation being laid in 1862 and the doctor who sold the house to the Monroes.

Some of the sketches in the book are original art by Charles Monroe. His studio was in the back of Bonnie Knoll, where he also forged metal pieces such as lanterns and hardware. Much of his handiwork remains in the house.

“It was clearly something she wanted to have published,” said Doyle, who also acquired Grace Monroe’s diary in which she mentions “her book.”

“I had it; it was here. It couldn’t sit another 60-some odd years,” Doyle said. “It was the stray cat that we took in that we then had to take care of. We got it done for her.”

A sober memory of ‘The Fall’

Well, we’re back. We couldn’t resist commenting on the upcoming election. We want to delve further into the Republican Party’s magnanimous comments while many members concurrently were pulling support from its nominee, Donald Trump. A lot has been said about the GOP’s “values” and “principles,” and we keep asking ourselves, Just what might those be? From our vantage point, the only values and principles the national GOP possesses relate to its unparalleled talents in losing national elections.

No organization is better at grasping defeat from the jaws of victory, as the old saying goes. Further, many pundits talk about how the nomination of Trump is all the fault of the GOP, which is true. However, we differ in that it isn’t anything the party has done during the last 15 months, but, rather, its failures dating to the late 1980s, when the GOP ceded control to the wimpy, liberal Bush wing of the party. As much respect as we have for Ronald Reagan, his biggest mistake was putting George H.W. Bush on the ticket.

Little did we know that while Reagan was resurrecting the Republican Party, he had inadvertently created the monster that would ultimately destroy it. Trump isn’t destroying the establishment GOP; the Bushes beat him to the punch. Explaining Trump’s relative success: Voters are attracted to him for no other reasons than he’s willing to fight and calling out the establishment and rigged systems, and we’ve not seen that from a Republican on the national stage since Reagan.

A place for anything

America, among its many other noted accolades, is the capital of stuff.

We have a ton of it. We have stuff in which to put our stuff. We have stuff to help us organize our stuff. I suppose that we have stuff to organize the stuff that we use to organize our stuff. It can all be a bit overstuffed.

But, pulling it together into some cohesive and orderly arrangement feels good. Once arranged, we are at the ready for whatever might come our way. The provisions for the machinations of life stand at hand awaiting our slightest need for deployment. Countered against the stacked disarray of the more shanty methods, an orderly approach to living seems entirely in order.

It seems simple. Yet, like many consequences of human undertaking, the expectation of simplicity is often followed by anything but. Our plans to keep house are overwhelmed by all manner of domestic ca-

tastrophe. Soon, our intended baskets, drawers, closets, shelves and tubs are filled to overflow with impact debris of a full life.

Should we surrender and expect a call from the A&E television show “Hoarders?”

Hopefully not. When the stuff is swelling and soon to overtake, pause and start, big to small. Wrangle the bits of scattered ephemera from work, school, marriage and family into holding pens. Then, arrange the variables that remain – preserving only those that have some significant practical or sentimental value. After, retrieve the small items, favorites first, until the space seems right.

Whatever is left in the coop goes to resale, charity or the landfill. “Everything in its place and a place for everything” only holds true if there is actually a place for anything.

As I wrapped up an emotional breakdown in a rather untoward McDonald’s bathroom stall off I-65 over humor the weekend, I reminded myself that even the strongest of women have to “let it out” from time to time. Doo thought it was hilarious, but given the night I’d had, I’m surprised I’d held it together for as long as I did.

The short of it is that my dad took a tumble and sustained a C-2 fracture, which, for those of you not up on your anatomical vocab, means quite literally that he broke his neck. Dad’s fine – he’s sporting a brace and a few stitches – but the hospital ordeal was extraordinarily stressful, in addition to occurring at a most inconvenient time, the middle of the night.

I’d have much rather been sleeping, but since I was in town, close by, and sober when it happened, I became an unwilling participant in what is now being called “The Fall.” I mention my sobriety only because several of my sisters were also “available” to handle the crisis, but only one didn’t have to Uber home from the bars when the SOS text went out.

So basically it was me, my mom, and one coherent sibling dealing with blood, dad’s protests, ER paperwork, and the inebriated baby of the family who not only insisted upon tagging along, but was also adamant about concocting an over-the-top story that would ensure dad’s immediate triage.

Emotionally weaker people might have lost their shtick at any point during the night, but I managed to stay calm and collected throughout, even when dad was categorized as a level-3 trauma and had to be ambulanced to a different hospital, one with a metal-detector entrance and homeless men sheltering in the waiting room.

Mom and sober sister kept their cool until dad was home, when a shared hug undid them both. Me? I got halfway back to Indy before the smell of fried potato goodness and the enormity of what “might have been” hit. At least I had a relatively clean toilet to cry on. Thanks McDonald’s!

The pumpkin workout

October is here, which means everywhere you look you are seeing pumpkin...pumpkin lattes, cookies, cakes, canexercise dies, pies...anything and everything is now with pumpkin! So, we thought with all the extra calories we all might be consuming this month due to pumpkins, it would be fun to turn one into our workout equipment. Your little ones can join along in the fun and help decorate the pumpkin when you are finished with the workout, or you can get a little pumpkin for them so they can do a pumpkin workout, too.

Here are a couple of our absolute favorite workouts to do with pumpkins.

Lunge with a twist A. Stand tall with the pumpkin in your hands with elbows bent. Lunge right leg back and twist left over front leg (make it harder by extending the arms straight out in front of you, then twisting).

B. Turn forward and step your right leg forward to meet left and come to standing.

Repeat on the other side for one rep.

V sit and twist A. Sit on ground and lean back, so that abs engage. Back should be flat and diagonal from the ground, starting at the tailbone and

Facts about gender and health Commentary by Lena Franklin, MD It’s common knowledge that ovarian cancer and prostate cancer are two diseases specific to women and men, family medicine respectively.

Men can get breast cancer, but it’s far more likely to occur in women. Men and women are susceptible to certain diseases based on the biological and anatomical differences between them.

And while gender increases the risk of certain health conditions, diseases often present differently in women and men, too.

One example is heart disease — a condition that’s more prevalent in men. While men are more likely to die from a heart attack early in life, women are more prone to “silent” heart attacks, which occur without chest pain or other telltale symptoms. Perhaps because women tend to live longer, they are also more likely to suffer a stroke, the risk of which increases with age. Osteoporosis is another disease that is more common in women. After menopause, they are five times more likely to get the disease than men.

When it comes to drinking alcohol, men

are two times more likely to binge drink than women. Men are more likely to require hospitalization due to heavy or binge drinking and are more likely to die from it. In terms of cancer, lung and colon cancer strike men more often than women.

While these gender differences and related statistics can be interesting, it’s important to remember disease and health issues can impact anyone. That’s why most primary care physicians recommend that adults see their doctor at least once a year for a physical. It’s during these more comprehensive visits that your doctor can discuss risk factors, family history and any symptoms you may be experiencing. He or she can also determine what preventive tests and screenings you may need so any diseases or health issues can be treated as soon as possible.

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A panel of four legislators recently spoke before Zionsville business owners and community leaders at the annual Legislative Lunch and Business Expo preexpo sented by the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce.

U.S. Rep. Susan W. Brooks (IN-5)preceded the panel discussion by offering an overview of her perspective on state and national government going into 2017. She said she believes national security will be a focus next year, as local security teams “are the eyes and ears” for homeland security.

Sen. Mike Delph, State Rep. Dr. Tim Brown, State Rep. Donna Schaibley and State Sen. Phil Boots participated in the discussion, offering their own perspectives of upcoming issues in Indiana and Boone County.

The school funding formula was also a hot topic with the impact that it has on Zionsville and other school districts. Delph said he represents areas that include Carmel and Zionsville, along with some Indianapolis Public Schools and sees the range of schools impacted.

be a challenge for us as it is every time we go through the budget,” he said.

“Education is a major issue we always deal with,” Schaibley said. She also said that finding long-term solutions for roads is a goal for next year’s budget.

They agreed that Indiana’s reputation is a weakness. Schaibley said the mentality about Indiana changes when people being recruited by local businesses visit the state.

“Once they get people here, they see what we have to offer,” she said. “We have a reputation that is not true to what we really are, and we need to somehow get better word out about our communities.”

One year ago, Stefanie Childs and Lindsay Lyon had an idea to sell shabby-chic style clothing and home accessories New biz online.

Their “endgame” was to eventually open a shop in Zionsville, but “we never even dreamed we would find a storefront (so soon),” Childs said. “It’s been such a whirlwind, and we can hardly keep up.”

On Oct. 1 they held a grand opening of their retail store, Blooms & Linen Boutique, 40 E. Poplar St., Zionsville.

This has been their third location since the website went live in February. They first stored their inventory in Child’s basement but found it challenging to serve customers who wanted to try on items. In May, they moved into an office space in the Village of West Clay.

Child’s husband spotted a rental sign off of Main Street and encouraged the ladies to explore it. Within a week, they had signed the lease and were able to move their inventory directly from their planned booth at Fall Festival.

The shift to a new location has been a shift in their aesthetic.

we started,” said Lyon, a Zionsville resident, who called their current look “boho free spirit,” and Childs called it “rustic bohemian.”

They agree their clothes work for a range of ages and functions. “We want everyone to feel welcome when they walk in,” Lyons said.

“Part of our goal is making women feel beautiful with what God’s made them to be,” said Childs, who lives in Indianapolis.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, but they said they expect to add hours as they ease into a schedule. Learn more at bloomsandlinen.com.

Warm up with soup Commentary by Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Cold weather seems to bring on our emotional need for hot soup. In the 19th century, Lewis Carroll, besides writing “Alice in Wonderland,” “Jabberwocky” and other classics, was so driven by his love for soup that he wrote a poem about it. In his poem “Beautiful Soup,” he begins with, “Beautiful soup, so rich and green, Waiting in a hot tureen!”

Since one can look up hundreds of other written tributes to soup there must be a reason. Research shows that what you eat during cold game days can help you survive cold blasts. There are nutritious options — like soups that trick your body into thinking it’s July. Here are four easy cold-weather tailgate foods to leave you feeling your best— even when the weather is at its worst.

• Deviled eggs – Their yolks contain vitamin D to replace lessened sunlight.

• Almonds – As a munching snack, their fat helps with skin lubrication.

• Pretzels – A healthy, high-carb snack during the game that increases your brain’s production of serotonin, which makes you feel good.

• Hot soup – Increases your body’s water intake and makes you feel warmer.

In today’s trendy sports bars and pubs, the rage is tortilla soup. Add onion, red pepper, sausage, and cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Add broth, tomatoes, salt, chilies and lime juice. Bring to a boil, and then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Allow the soup to cool outside on your deck or balcony so that you can refrigerate it overnight.

On game day, reheat the soup and pack it into a Coleman Powerchill hot/cold thermoelectric cooler for transport to the game. Another option is to place the soup pot onto a towel in a room-temperature, insulated cooler. Cover the pot with more towels to keep it warm during your drive to the game. As you ladle the soup into bowls or mugs, top each with tortilla chips, and serve with cilantro and green onion.

Cedar plank grilled salmon with sweet potatoes

Ingredients: • Cedar planks with enough surface area for salmon • 4 Alaska salmon fillets (4-6 ounces each), fresh, thawed or frozen • olive oil spray • 1 tablespoon fresh (or 1 teaspoon dried) dill, thyme or rosemary • salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste • 4 large sweet potatoes, sliced lengthwise into wedges • 1/2 tablespoon ground cumin Directions: Soak cedar planks for 1-2 hours (or overnight) submerged in water. Remove and pat dry.

Linz: Forgetting Hitler Commentary by Don Knebel Linz, the third-largest city in Austria, has been home to men with lasting influence.

Current residents would like to travel forget one of them.

Linz was founded as a trading village by the Romans on both sides of the Danube River, 19 miles south of Austria’s current border with the Czech Republic. By the 15th century, it had become the most important city in the Holy Roman Empire, attracting people from all across Europe. Johannes Kepler lived in Linz from 1612 to 1626, teaching mathematics. While there, he discovered his third law of planetary motion. On Oct. 1, 1762, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, then 6, gave his first public performance at a Linz Inn. He stopped by Linz in late 1783, where he wrote his 36th Symphony in four days.

Nine-year-old Adolph Hitler moved with his parents to Linz, where he lived until he was 18. On March 13, 1938, Hitler announced to cheering crowds the annexation of Austria from the tiny balcony of Linz’s town hall, gain-

ing Linz the Nazi title of “City of the Founding of the Greater German Reich.” Hitler dreamed of making Linz, which he considered his “home town,” the cultural center of Europe and made grandiose plans for a museum in Linz to display art stolen from the Jews of Europe. The plans were never realized.

Today, Linz, with a population of about 200,000, is a recognized center of electronic media and one of 69 UNESCO “Creative Cities.”

An unusually large city square, dating to the 13th century, features a marble statue celebrating the Holy Trinity and hosts outdoor markets year round. Linz guides show visitors the inn where Mozart first performed and the university and buildings honoring Kepler. Confronting their city’s association with Hitler, guides also point to the streets and monuments remembering the victims of Nazi horrors.
