Main Street fire accidental

The Zionsville Fire Dept. has determined that a Sept. 18 fire that damaged three businesses and apartpublic safety ments on Main Street was accidental.

The investigation concluded that the fire started in the basement of Noah Grants restaurant when an exothermic reaction

resulted in spontaneous ignition of rags in a trash container. The fire spread to cause as much as $750,000 in damage at Noah Grants, Silk Purse Antiques, Julie Bova Designs and the apartment area upstairs.

The one resident at home at the time of the fire escaped safely before firefighters arrived. One firefighter was injured on the scene, transported to a hospital and released later in the day.

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com The Whitestown Human Relations Commission has begun planning several new events and activities to celebrate diversity throughout the whitestown community.

On Oct. 21, the commission will present the Whitestown Festival of Lights Celebration at the Whitestown Municipal Complex. The inaugural event will include traditional Indian cuisine, culture and dancing and present the history of the Festival of Lights. The Festival of Lights celebrates Diwali, a five-day festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. The free event has already sold out with more than 500 people reserving a spot.

The commission also plans to hold the first ever Pride Fashion Show in Whitestown. It will occur during Pride Week, with dates still to be Rollins determined. Yoskisha Rollins, president of the Whitestown Human Relations Commission, said this will be the first fashion show of its kind in the area, and they anticipate having a transgender emcee and deejay for the event.

“The Whitestown Human Relations Commission is both eager and excited to bring awareness, education and community together with opportunities to learn about the diverse origins of the people who make and call this community home,” Rollins said.

A Piñata Party to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month was tentatively scheduled to occur during the last Whitestown Farmers Market, but has been cancelled because of the event being too close to the Whitestown Festival of Lights.

Donnelly talks bipartisanship, simplifying tax code Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Sen. Joe Donnelly has been ranked as one of the most bipartisan senators in Congress by the Lugar Center. politics The Indiana Democrat shared how he successfully works across the aisle and what he sees as top issues for Hoosiers in an exclusive interview with Current.

You’re known for working with Republicans, but many legislators seem less willing to cooperate with the other party.

How do you deal with that?

There’s a lot more wisdom in (county government) than in Washington, D.C. In the county, when people get together to solve problems, they don’t always agree on everything, but they figure out a path forward (knowing) that 70 percent of something is better than 100 percent of nothing.

How do you decide what issues are important for Hoosiers?

When I look at an issue, I look at it in a way that’s not Democrat or Republican, but does it make our nation stronger? Does it make our families stronger? That’s how I try to decide. I look at a mom and dad in

Carmel or Avon or Terre Haute or Richmond and say, ‘What makes sense for these families?’

What are the top issues facing Hoosiers right now?

No. 1 is that everybody has a chance to get a really good job with a really good paycheck, because what that does is stabilizes

the family.

Second is we have a real challenge — not only in our state but in our country — with opioids and with heroin, and I’m working nonstop to try to end this. The damage these drugs cause can destroy families.

Is the opioid epidemic a problem throughout the state?

It is a problem everywhere. The most important thing mom and dad can do is talk to their kids about it, because we’re not in the basement the entire time that party is going on. Our children need to understand that the best friend they have is the friend who’s willing to look them in the eye and say, ‘We’re leaving right now, because they’re bringing these opioids out.’ This scourge knows no economic boundary and knows no neighborhood boundary.

What are your thoughts on simplifying the tax code?

I think that would be great, and I think it’s very possible. We just need to make sure in simplifying the tax code we don’t wind up increasing the deficit at all, because it’s not fair to our families and it’s not fair to our children to increase the debt burden and to make it so that the next generation has to pay for today’s deficits.

The recent situation in Charlottesville has led to many discussions about whether Confederate symbols have a place in our culture. What do you think?

My focus is on the issue itself. There’s no place for the KKK. There’s no place for (neo-) Nazis. There’s no place for racism. We are so much stronger when we are together.

How is it different working in Congress under President Trump than it was with President Obama?

I don’t work for any president. I work with presidents, but I work for the people of Indiana, so they’re the executive branch, I’m the legislative branch, and my bosses are everyone back home here in our state.

So for all of them, when the president is right and has a policy that makes sense for our state, count me in. When I look at something and say I don’t think this helps either our state or our country, I’ll pass. It’s of no interest to me whether they’re Democrat or Republican.

What do you see as the strengths of Hamilton and Boone counties?

Hamilton and Boone are both really family friendly counties and places that folks look at and go, ‘Gosh, we’d love to live there.’ I think that’s a real strength.

As part of the Rotary Youth Exclub change Program, Paul Massuard, from France, is staying with the family and attending Zionsville Community High School. The Oberweiser family is one of three he’ll stay with during the school year.

“He’s with us until after Thanksgiving,” said Oberweiser of Massuard, who arrived Aug. 2. “He’ll live with another family to around spring break and then another one.”

The club hosted a female student from Finland last school year.

“We sent a girl from Zionsville to Italy last year,” Oberweiser said. “This is the second year we are back into hosting. We sent a student to Thailand probably five or six years ago.”

Oberweiser said the Rotary Youth Exchange program is good for the exchange student and the students at ZCHS he interacts with daily.

Oberweiser said Massuard will attend Rotary Club meetings in Zionsville.

“He’ll get with the six other Rotary exchange students in central Indiana,” Oberweiser said. “They’ll do several things throughout the year.”

Oberweiser said Massuard’s English was a bit rough when he got here.

“He understands a little more than he’s able to speak,” Oberweiser said. “We used the Google translate app on our phone a few times, but for the most part it’s gone well, and it’s only going to get better.”

Oberweiser said Massuard was very surprised at the size of ZCHS, both the number of students and the actual layout.

“He said the people and culture were pretty much as he expected,” Oberweiser said.

Massuard was placed as a junior in high school.

“The good thing is that this is the year all the kids take American history,” Oberweiser said. “The literature is all American literature. He has a full course load, so he didn’t take it easy.”

ZCS proposes $80M 2018 budget

The Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees held a public hearing Oct. 9 to discuss the district’s 2018 Education proposed budget. Chief Financial Officer Mike Shafer led a presentation that outlined five key points.

How much is ZCS going to spend?

The budget estimates ZCS will spend $80.1 million in 2018 with 75.17 percent going toward instruction, 11.25 percent toward maintenance and utilities, 11.78 percent toward administration and clerical services and 1.82 percent for other expenses. Instruction costs include teachers’ salaries and benefits, as well as teachers’ supplies and more.

The budget also accounts for the debt service fund, which Shafer said will continue to decrease. Since refinancing bonds in 2005, more than $106 million in principal has been paid off.

ZCS plans to purchase two large buses this year, as well as one smaller one. Shafer said it would be ideal to purchase seven new buses per year.

What revenue and resources will support these expenses?

Revenue will be a combination of 52 percent from state funding, 43 percent from property taxes and 5 percent from other

sources.

State aid is determined by enrollment, with its funding per pupil divided into two categories. Each district receives a set amount per pupil, and that number is adjusted on factors relating to poverty in the district. ZCS receives the least amount of funding per pupil in Indiana, which Shafer said has been the case for years.

Will the budget be balanced?

Yes, all funds are expected to be balanced. Shafer said ZCS is planning so that any changes to debt service fund regulations do not affect the balance or tax rates.

What does the proposed budget mean for taxpayers?

The 2018 property tax bill should be approximately the same as last year for all homeowners. In 2015, ZCS was rated 16 out of 20 when comparing property tax rates with peer communities. In 2017, ZCS dropped to 18th place when the tax rate decreased.

Shafer credits the decrease to savings from the debt service fund and good management by the Town of Zionsville.

What is the district’s long-term outlook?

Shafer said the outlook is fair for the foreseeable future but also dependent upon continuity in state funding formulas and tax rates.

The school board is expected to vote on the budget at its next meeting at 6 p. m.

New site for ZEF Barn Bash

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com The Barn Bash returns Nov. 11 to raise funds for the Zionsville Education Foundation.

Education With a lower ticket price and a new location, ZEF Chief Development Officer Katie Reasoner wants to encourage more people to Browne attend and learn about the organization.

Tickets are $75 per person until Oct. 27.

The price is $85 after that. The Barn Bash will be at Finley Creek Vineyards, a new Zionsville event space on Michigan Road, created by Jacquie Bols of Jacquie’s Catering.

Reasoner said Finley Creek Vineyards was selected to create a barn-type atmosphere. Last year’s event was at the Zionsville Airport.

“Inject some new life into it,” said Lyle Browne, ZEF chief operating officer.

Barn Bash will be one of the first big events at Finley Creek Vineyards, which opened this month.

Dinner will include pulled pork and chicken, a mac and cheese bar and a signature bourbon drink.

“We want it to be more of a party and not a sit-down dinner,” Reasoner said.

The band Greta Speaks will provide entertainment through much of the evening. The performance will be interspersed with a live auction.

A silent auction, run by online bidding website Reasoner Qtego also will be offered.

With a goal to raise enough money to fund one grant, tickets for a special February girls night out can also be purchased through the website. The girls night out, open to anyone, will have food from Jacquie’s Catering with a special martini bar.

Since its inception, more than $1.1 million has been raised by ZEF to fund grants for classrooms, student enrichment and professional development. Last year, ZEF provided more than $102,000 in grants to Zionsville Community Schools.

Commentary by Brad Thompson If you can read, write and do basic arithmetic, Tabernacle Presbyterian Church at 34th Street and Central Avenue in Indianapolis could use your help.

Butch and Janet West of Zionsville answered the call and work with elementary students through the Tab Tutoring Program, founded approximately nine years ago.

Volunteer tutors work with students who come to the church from School 48, The Oaks Academy and other schools. Tutoring sessions last from 3:45 until 5:15 p.m. every Thursday during the school year. The students are in kindergarten through eighth grade, and each student is assigned his or her own tutor. There are approximately 40 students in the program, but unfortunately, the program has to turn some students away for lack of tutors.

There is no training required for adult volunteers. The tutors come from all walks of life. For those who want to try it out before buying, the program needs substitute tutors who will be available to help when regular tutors cannot. This is especially true in January and February when some of the regular tutors head south for the winter. If you’re interested in volunteering, call Tab Church at 317-923-5458.

The kids participating in the tutoring range from kindergarten on up, so a group of the tutors help the kids cross the busy street on their way to the church.

Marian cycling teams with bluerub Wife’s kidney transplant leads Zionsville couple to create sol-is body care products

Besides being an avid cyclist who could cover story use the products, Shackmuth’s wife, Jane, received a second kidney transplant in 2014.

“The real thought process behind this is we had been on vacation, and she was looking for a natural-based lotion,” Schackmuth said. “They’re out there, but they are not easy to find. We talked about different concepts. I said, ‘Why don’t we start making our own?’ We’ve owned our (own) company before. We decided to go down that route. She didn’t get what she really wanted as a (natural-based) sunscreen yet. We’ve tested some this year.”

The company does produce an SPF (sun protection factor) lip balm.

The Zionsville residents started sol-is body care in 2015 and offer a variety of sports cream products under the bluerub label.

Schackmuth said athletes typically don’t look at ingredients, which are often saturated with petroleum, silicone or have high alcohol content.

“That was important to myself and my wife, because everything you put on skin as a transplant patient is important,” Schackmuth said. “Being immunocompromised, everything you put on skin absorbs in, so you have to be careful. Deodorant has high aluminum content, and you really shouldn’t use it. So we are really conscious about what (ingredients) we use and how we use it. That fueled the concept of the company.”

Jane said they discussed the idea for the company for at least a year.

“I researched what was available and how to go about doing it,” said Jane, who previously had a kidney transplant in 2003.

“We wanted to go ahead, and we thought it was a good idea because other people would be looking for the same kind of things.

We started with the chamois cream and the muscle rub because there is a demand for that. I use the products. I’ve been running, and I want to run my first 5K this fall, perhaps late October or early November.”

Schackmuth said the company has its own chemist.

“I’ve been in pharmaceutical sales for 15 years, but that doesn’t make me a chemist,” Schackmuth said. “We figure what ingredients are important to us, and then we send it off to our national lab. Then we tweak it some more and come up with a final product.”

Schackmuth, whose products are available at nearly 200 stores nationally, said the company has a very strategic growth plan.

“Next year, the forecast is about 400 stores,” Schackmuth said.

“The year after, we’re going to leap to a thousand. It all has to do with distribution. This year we got picked up by the largest outdoor distribution center in the country.”

The product is available in approximately 40 bicycle and running shops.

“We’re working with chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists,” Schackmuth said.

Schackmuth said the muscle cream is to be used before and after endurance events.

“I used to go to West Virginia and hike, and you would chafe on an eight or 10-mile hike,” he said.

Schackmuth said the athletes like bluerub because it’s natural and goes on thin.

“It lasts for the performance, and it’s good for the body,” said Schackmuth, who estimates bluerub is available in 90 percent of the bicycle shops in Indiana. “We’re in 70 percent of the independent running stores in Indiana.”

Schackmuth said the company has five sales representatives covering 15 states.

“We have a chiropractor in Canada we’re shipping products to as well,” he said.

Schackmuth, 51, describes himself as a serial entrepreneur. He started a furniture company out east when he got out of the Navy.

“I sold off to my partner, and that’s when we moved back to the Midwest in 2001,” Schackmuth said. “I’m originally from Wisconsin, and my wife is from Terre Haute.”

Schackmuth said the family lived in Carmel for several years before moving to Zionsville approximately five years ago. The couple’s oldest son, William, a 2013 Guerin Catholic High School graduate, is in the Coast Guard. Their younger son, Charlie, is a sophomore at Zionsville Community High School. Both sons were adopted from Russia.

The Marian University cycling team recently formed a partnership with bluerub to use their products.

The Knights have won five consecutive Division I Team Omnium championships and are the defending national team champion in the track, BMX and road disciplines.

Marian cyclists will use bluerub chamois cream as well as the company’s muscle rub, anti-chafe stick and hand repair cream.

“As we have done with team helmets and other pieces of equipment, we look at each individual piece of ‘gear’ that our student-cyclists use as a crucial part of their performance,” Marian cycling coach Dean Peterson stated in a release when the decision was announced. “Evaluating the ingredients of our chamois cream was a step toward ensuring we are using the safest and most reliable products in our training and racing. The fact that bluerub is local and involved with many of our existing community and retail partners was icing on the cake.”

The well-dressed, if a bit frazzled, man said to his colleague, “I’m managing three No. 1 priorities,” while waiting for a table at a fashionable luncheon spot. His plan, it seems, is to equally attack a triumvirate of matters – begging a plethora of questions. Will he dedicate one third of each day to 100 perent of each problem? Will he dedicate 100 percent of a day in a three-day rotation? Will he dedicate 100 percent of his attention to 33.3 percent of each problem simultaneously? It makes one’s head spin.

Can we hope to serve three masters?

No doubt, most of us live lives complicated by innumerable and deserving objectives, like chicks in the nest, each squawking endlessly for our attention. They all demand our time, resources and effort. Is it reasonable to believe that one person can effectively address more than one matter?

Multitasking, at least for most mortals, has proven a fiction. Studies continue to prove that we humans are ill equipped to drive, text, drink coffee and carry-on a conversation simultaneously.

So, what’s a highly motivated, and overtaxed, person to do? Create a discipline of one, and only one, top priority. Then, move to the second, only after the first is complete. Driving for a moment and then texting for a moment doesn’t work. Finish the primary object (think complete, not perfect), only then move on to complete No. 2. If we don’t get to the third, so what?

We’ve arrived safely. We’ve fulfilled our chief objective. Of our lists, are we misleading ourselves that each is equal? If we had to choose, could we? Before we give in to our obligations, have we prioritized our priorities?

What a glorious Saturday night this is shaping up to be. The husband and sons are at Regal, guard daughter at humor a competition, and Tiny Dancer is hanging with friends and the dog in the basement. Basically, it’s just me and the cat. I’m so excited!

The perfect evening is about to unfold.

The kitchen is clean, the lights are dimmed, and I have the next three hours to get reacquainted with my DVR via “Designated Survivor,” “Catastrophe,” and my new fave, “Veep.”

Does this make me lame? Yes, but I’m embracing it. I’m old enough to accept the introvert neat-freak I have become and to love every anal-retentive part about her.

Because at 45, life is too short to be someone I’m not.

Doo, though, disagrees. He’s afraid that once he dies (no doubt before me), I’ll become a friendless, Clorox-obsessed recluse, who only leaves the house for work and Friskies. To that end, he’s constantly trying to get me to “go out,” socialize with people, and have fun. He forgets I have four sisters and 13 in-law siblings, all close in age. I’ve got more peeps than is natural for an earlyto-bed, one-drink-only, soulless ginger like myself. I don’t need any more relationships, nor do I want to spend my weekends “going out.” In my book of middle-age awesomeness, fun is measured in cherry Pop-Tarts and HBO series.

Speaking of which, that delicious scenario currently awaits. And because I must capitalize on every alone-but-not-lonely second, I shall bid thee farewell. After all, when it’s Saturday night and the Wilson mice are away, the cat and I like to hit play.

Working for a widow Commentary by Ward Degler We felt sorry for Mrs. Costner when her husband died in the war. My parents told me I should ask what I could do to help out at her house. plain talk I was 10 and felt a little awkward asking a grieving widow if I could carry out her trash or rake the leaves. Mrs. Costner, on the other hand, never hesitated.

“That’s sweet,” she said. “There’s a bunch of junk in the attic that Harry was going to get down, but never got around to it.”

It was awful. Everything was dusty, and the attic was full of spiders. But after the job was done, she had me wash my hands at the sink, and then she gave me an oatmeal cookie.

The garage, too, was full of junk. Dutifully, I hauled it to the curb so the junk man could cart it away. There was a trunk in her basement that contained quilts and blankets that had belonged to her grandmother. They needed to be aired out on the clothesline in her back yard.

Naturally, when I was finished I got a cookie.

Over the next four years I did a hundred different chores for Mrs. Costner.

Things, she said, that Harry was going to

do but didn’t.

We moved away from that town some time later; I went through high school and college. After that, I went into the army where, on occasion, I thought about Harry Costner, how he had died defending our country, and I wondered how Mrs. Costner was getting on.

Many years later my younger sister was visiting from Arizona and we decided to revisit our old hometown. We drove around for a while, checking out the school building that had long ago yielded its desks and blackboards to the new school across the street.

We stopped in front of the house where we grew up, and I pointed to the house next door where Mrs. Costner had lived. An old woman opened the front door and peeked out.

“Mrs. Costner?” I asked hesitantly. She adjusted the glasses on her nose and peered at me.

“Well,” she said with a smile of recognition, “I suppose you could fix that screen door if you wanted to.”

Simple steps can clarify tax issue Editor, Several interesting articles in last week’s paper about the Whitestown/Zionsville identity issue. Maybe this is something that should be considered when annexations are being proposed. It also could be avoided with just a few simple steps from each municipality’s planning department.

How about this: Your mailing address is: Zionsville Your school system is: Zionsville Your taxing unit is: Zionsville/Whitestown This might force municipal employees to understand their municipality a little better and that just because you annex an area that does not change the school corporation for that area or the current mail delivery center for that area.

Also, when you annex an area, you “cre-

ate” a new taxing unit. The Zionsville/Whitestown taxing unit has a different tax rate than the Whitestown taxing unit.

I also did not understand how L.A. Cafe, which is in the Whitestown taxing unit and is delivered by the Whitestown Post Office or this Circle K Subway, if it also has a Whitestown address and delivered by the Whitestown Post Office, has an issue. Especially L.A. Cafe, they have been around before Zionsville had its Food & Beverage tax.

This is an issue the Indiana Dept. of Revenue needs to clear up. You would think when you receive money, you would know where it comes from, and you would think the employees of your government would know whether or not that entity is part of your municipality or not.

Editor, I thought about what I have wanted to say (regarding the Oct. 10 Current in Zionsville cover story on Whitestown and Zionsville identity issues) for a few hours without offending the author and the residents who are quoted in this article.

After last week’s column about getting a knee replacement, many people expressed sympathy. Not for me, but for humor my wife, who has to pester me every day to do my exercises, which can be very painful. The pestering, I mean.

While I’ve been recuperating, Mary Ellen decided to tackle a job she had been putting off: going through kitchen drawers to see what we have accumulated in them over the years and what should be thrown out.

“What is this?” Mary Ellen asked me as she dangled a doodad in front of my face.

It was small, white, plastic, hexagonal in shape, and had several grooves. “It looks like it goes to something,” she said.

“I have no idea what it is,” I responded.

“Let’s put it somewhere in case we ever need it. It looks important.”

“So you want to keep it because you don’t know what it is for? ” “Don’t be silly. I only keep things that look important.”

I knew exactly what she meant. I have a desk drawer in my office filled with things

that look important — but I don’t have a clue what they are for. The only way to find out if something has any value is to throw it away.

When Mary Ellen wasn’t looking, I took the thingamajig she asked me about and tossed it in the trash. Whatever that thing was, it was now gone forever. It was just a matter of time before I found out what it was for. The next week our son stopped by the house. “Dad, Mom wants me to mount the kitchen phone on the wall. I can’t find the mounting bracket. It’s a small, white, hexagonal piece of plastic with grooves. Do you know where it is?”

“Yes, of course. It’s on the far south side of Indy — at the landfill.”

“You threw that away? Dad, didn’t you know that it went to something?”

“Yes, I knew it went to something. I just didn’t know what it went to.”

“We know now, Dad. It went to the dump.”

Health tips for open enrollment Commentary by Ryan Alexander, DO Fall is often when people begin thinking about health benefits and insurance coverage for the coming year. insurance Here are some things to keep in mind as you make choices during open enrollment: Aim to establish an ongoing relationship with a primary care provider. Longterm physician-patient relationships allow doctors to get to know their patients and learn their medical history.

When reviewing your health insurance options each year, check to make sure your primary care doctor is included in your plan. If you’re taking prescription medications, it’s important to work with your current doctor to ensure you have refills to meet your needs until you find a new physician.

Review the preventive care coverage included in your plan. The Affordable Care Act requires that preventive health services be covered at no additional cost in all health insurance plans. These services, which include immunizations and health

screenings are based on age and gender.

Take time to review your health plan to understand what preventive care services are offered and then work with your primary care provider to develop a preventive care plan that’s right for you.

Learn about your prescription drug plan and work with your doctor. Some health insurance plans offer incentives for 90-day prescriptions. If you’re taking maintenance medications for a chronic condition, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, ask your doctor if a longer-term prescription is possible to save you money.

“I was feeling a little lost in life,” the 29-year-old Zionsville counseling resident said. “I have a good job as a pharmacy technician at Riley Children’s Hospital, but don’t want to do that as my career. I went to nursing school and upon graduating, realized it was not my passion either. I wanted Dulin to find a career that I was passionate about and incorporated my interests.”

She found the strength and courage to pursue her professional passions after completing the Gallup Clifton StrengthFinders Program offered at The Cabin Counseling and Resource Center in Zionsville.

The Cabin is a professional counseling and resource center offering assistance for individuals, couples and families.

The Strengthfinders program is designed to help people identify their talents, develop their strengths, enhance their professional

performance and determine a career choice.

Dulin said the program helped her realize that she wanted to pursue a degree in forensic psychology. She said she never thought it would be possible to get a degree in that field, which combines two of her interests: crime and psychology.

The sessions are led by Gallup Certified Strengths Coach Laurie Kirkpatrick. Dulin said Kirkpatrick helped her feel at ease about not knowing what she wanted to do while helping her discover her strengths.

“I believe in myself more than ever,” Dulin said.

8 businesses announce plans to open in Anson

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com With at least eight new businesses announcing plans to open in Whitestown in the coming months, the growth town continues to live up to its reputation as the fastest-growing community in the state.

“This crazy growth phase is kind of the normal for us right now. We know what an amazing place this is to live and Sumner raise a family, and we believe this is due to the fact we have such a sense of community here,” said Tanya Sumner, Whitestown director of public relations. “With great schools, retail shops, restaurants and green spaces available to our residents, it’s not surprising families and businesses alike want to be a part of our ever-changing environment.”

The new businesses include Chick-fil-A, Jimmy John’s, Noble Roman’s Craft Pizza & Pub, McAlister’s Deli, Wendy’s, a dental practice and a nail salon (both currently unnamed) and Parkway Dental Care, which

Sumner said the addition of Chick-fil-A is welcome news to residents who’ve been vocal over the years they’d like to see the chain open in Whitestown.

“Chick-fil-A’s been aspiring to build here for quite some time but had to wait until our town grew to the point it made sense for their business model. Our residents couldn’t be more thrilled,” she said. “The McAlister’s Deli announcement also resonated extremely well with our residents.”

Sumner said the Noble Roman’s Craft Pizza & Pub — which is geared toward creating a great atmosphere for families, wine and beer connoisseurs and sports lovers — has also been well received.

“Their dining room is hip, relaxed and

comfortable with 13 large screens, a wine bar that serves 16 different wines, as well as 29 different beers, including a wide variety of craft and on-tap selections,” Sumner said.

Sumner said commercial and residential growth is something the town has come to expect and enjoy throughout the community.

“Fortunately, we’ve only just begun to grow to our future potential. In Whitestown, there’s currently plenty of property for any size business to locate here, from small retail spaces to large plots of land where corporations can grow in our business parks,” she said. “There are also several new neighborhoods in the planning stages. And there are several lots available for new restaurants near our large, $50 million retail center called the Shoppes at Whitestown.”

Veteran newspaper sales-and-leadership veteran Mike Schaefer has been named Current Publishing’s sales manager staff and already is plying his trade.

He is focused on growth and development for Current and the newspapers of Times-Leader Publications, Current’s sister company.

“Then I woke up one morning art and thought, ‘I might want to eat,’” DeGan said. “So I decided to do something practical.”

So she dropped ceramics to take physics at her suburban Chicago high school.

“I was a medical technologist,” said DeGan, a Butler University graduate. “I then had kids and, for various reasons, ended up a special-ed teacher.”

Two years ago, she retired to return full time to her love of art.

“I started doing clay as a break from raising four kids,” DeGan said. “I started taking art classes at Broad Ripple High School. I moved on to Indianapolis Arts Center and got such fabulous instruction that I became an instructor.”

The longtime Carmel resident has been in the Local Clay Potters’ Guild for more than a year. DeGan is eager to hosting another display at the annual show.

“I was in it last year for the first time, and it was spectacular,” she said. “It was

fun. It was well-attended.”

The 20th annual Pottery Show and Sale is set for 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 3 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Bloomington Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave. Admission is free.

DeGan said it draws a strong crowd because it is held in conjunction with two other artists’ guilds. The Local Clay Guild show is on the second floor, and the Bloomington Glass Guild and Bloomington Spinners & Weavers Fiber Art Guild are on the bottom floor.

“They are separate shows, but we work together as far as advertising,” said DeGan, whose specialty is stoneware. “We have joint grant money to get the venue.

People have the opportunity if they travel that far to see three different shows.”

To be a member of the Bloomingtonbased Local Clay Potters Guild, the member has to live within 75 miles from Bloomington. DeGan just makes it.

“I make pitchers, mugs and bowls,” she said. “We’re allowed to bring in the neighborhood of 200 pieces. We might not put them all out at once. Everyone has assigned tasks, and one of them is making

sure if there are holes in the display,” DeGan has had a space at the Carmel International Arts Festival for several years. She had information promoting the Bloomington show last month.

“I was amazed at the people that had been to Bloomington show before or took the cards and were interested,” she said.

DeGan, who teaches a Monday day class for clay beginners at the Indianapolis Arts Center, has participated in art fairs since 2001. This one is special, she said.

“When you go to this, you are immediately greeted with someone welcoming you and all sorts of ceramic plates with homemade cookies,” she said. “There is an area called Potters’ Choice, which highlights each artist. There are photographs and samples of their work. There is a sculpture gallery for our sculptures. The remainder of that room is everyone’s work blended together.”

DeGan said it’s great to be part of the Guild because of professional growth.

“You feed off each other technique-wise and also combining marketing,” DeGan said.

Gourmet Girlfriends present tour

By Renee Larr • edtiorial@youarecurrent.com The Gourmet Girlfriends will present a culinary tour through history called Cooking Through the Decades Culinary at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library.

Partners Jan Owens and Pam Cooley make up the catering team of Gourmet Girlfriends.

“We started as personal chefs, and we’ve just grown from there,” Owens said. “We do a lot of catering. We do a weekly meal service where we cook and deliver on Wednesday to busy families. We also do workshops like this one.”

The event will, in part, be a history lesson in addition to a cooking demonstration.

“We have done this event before some other places,” Owens said. “It’s one of our more fun workshops. Guests tend to really enjoy it. We’ll start out in the ’50s talking about an invention called the microwave.

Then, we do a recipe from the ’50s, and then we go up through the ’70s.”

Guests will take home a Lipton Onion Soup mix and a cook booklet.

Your age is showing Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I recently celebrated a birthday. Okay, maybe “celebrated” isn’t quite accurate.

Let’s say I recently grammar guy endured another birthday. And, as much as I openly dislike birthday attention, this got me thinking: How do I properly write about my age?

Some say you’re only as old as you act.

In that case, I’m 11 years old. Just ask my three-year-old son.

Did you notice the two ways I wrote about ages just now? Both instances are correct.

Here’s the rule: Only add hyphens when the age is used as an adjective that comes before the noun you are modifying. For example: We haven’t been getting any sleep thanks to our three-month-old daughter.

In this case, the adjective (three-monthold) comes before the noun (daughter) it describes.

If the noun comes before the age, don’t use a hyphen. For example: Curtis is 33 years old. In this case, the rapidly aging noun (Curtis) is 33–the same number as Larry Bird’s jersey.

Imagine your home, totally organized!

So, when do you write out a number and when do you simply use a numeral?

As a general rule, spell out numbers one through nine and use numerals for numbers 10 and larger. Many style guides disagree, because if they all had the same rules, we’d only need one book. Of course, there are exceptions to this numerical rule, like when you want to have consistency in your sentence. For example: Zionsville has 3 roundabouts, while Carmel has 102.

In this case, it would look strange to write out “three” and then use a numeral, so I used numerals for both.

Whether you write it with letters or numerals, age is merely a number. In this roundabout we call life, we all get off at our own exits, because otherwise we’d all be dizzy. Relational ties are the hyphens that bind us together with the people we love.

Roman Engineering in Aspendos Commentary by Don Knebel Aspendos is located approximately 30 miles east of Antalya in southern Turkey.

Each year 400,000 visitors travel come to the city to see two remarkable accomplishments of Roman engineers.

By the fifth century B.C., Aspendos, strategically situated on a flattop hill above the Eurymedon River that flows into the Mediterranean, had become an important port city, with its mints producing some of the world’s earliest coins. The Romans, who captured and plundered Aspendos in 79 B.C., rebuilt the city with markets, monuments, baths and temples. The ruins of many of those structures remain.

The most visited ancient structure in Aspendos is the theater, considered the best-preserved Roman theater in the world.

Erected between 160 and 180 A.D. during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the theater emulated the Greek model, with its horseshoe-shaped seating area built against the hillside. Depending on the assumed size of the average theatergoer, the

estimated capacity of the 41 rows of seats, divided into two sections, ranges between 7500 and 20,000. The two-story stage house, from which actors entered the stage from one of five doors, is remarkably intact and is still used for performances.

Less well preserved than the theater are the remains of an ingenious system that brought water to the Aspendos hilltop from mountains 12 miles on the other side of the valley. The system took advantage of the principle that water seeks its own level. One 300-foot-tall stone tower near the mountains carried the water in a channel downwardly at a 55-degree angle toward horizontal pipes laid on supports in the valley.

Another angled tower channeled the flowing water back up to the city. The remains of the Aspendos water system are the most complete of any similar system in the world and are worth a visit after seeing the theater.
