Council proclaims support for ZCS referendum

The Zionsville Town Council voiced its support for the local school district as it unanimously passed a proclamation supportpolitics ing Zionsville Community Schools’ upcoming ballot referendum during its regular monthly meeting Oct. 5 at town hall.

The schools’ current referendum, passed in 2012, expires at the end of the year. The proposal to voters on the November ballot extends the current referendum, at the same tax rate, for an additional six years to avoid a drastic increase in class sizes and the loss of more than 100 employees.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Hopper introduced the proclamation of support to the rest of the council.

It read, in part: “Whereas the future of the town of Zionsville is inextricably linked to the quality of Zionsville Community Schools; and whereas Zionsville Community Schools will receive the lowest per-

student funding in the state of Indiana … and whereas the loss of referendum funds would result in the loss of up to 120 teaching and support staff positions, leading to greatly increased class sizes at all levels … and whereas continuing the current referendum rate for an additional six years provides financial stability to recruit and retain the best teachers, provide student and community stability and provide stability in home values … and whereas every dollar of taxpayer investment provided by the referendum will benefit student learning and achievement in Zionsville and will not be spent on administrative overheard, buildings or facilities … Therefore, the Zionsville Town Council endorses efforts by the Zionsville Community schools to pass an operating referendum for a six-year period and pledges its support to this community.”

ZCS Supt. Scott Robison and other ZCS officials were in attendance. School board member Jane Burgess addressed the council to express thanks for the proclamation of support.

Talks begin for 2016 Zionsville town budget

The Zionsville Town Council heard the introduction and first reading of the town’s proposed 2016 budgovernment get during its regular monthly meeting Oct. 5 at town hall.

Town Manager Ed Mitro introduced the budget to council members, as Zionsville Mayor Jeff Papa was unable to attend Monday’s meeting.

Mitro Mitro said the proposal he presented to the council was designed to maintain quality services while at the same time trying to stay on budget.

“The original budget proposal submitted by Papa the mayor and staff was a wish list … looking at maintaining a 2.5 percent increase range, which was the same as we had last year and also just tried to hold steady with increases that may come,” Mitro said.

That initial budget was also in the red by more than $2.5 million, prompting a round of cuts by Mitro and Papa.

“Mayor Papa and myself went through the process of looking at all of the budgets, coming up with cuts that we believed would be helpful and necessary to try and get the operating balance for the town to be in balance,” Mitro said.

“The first go around, we had a budget that was an increase of 8.72 percent from the projected 2015 year-end,” he added.

“Through an initial set of cuts that we then presented to the town council, the town looked at reducing the budget by approximately $1.9 million. We were hoping at that time that we’d end up with just a very small but positive balance in the overall operating budget.”

As an August budget workshop approached, errors in the budget were discovered that spurred a need for Zionsville to make another round of cuts.

“Ultimately, we would end up cutting approximately $2.6 million from the budget and would end up with total operating funds that were about $294,000 to the good,” Mitro said.

“Our proposed 2016 operating budget at $17,108,000 is about 4 percent lower than the projected year-end in 2015,” he added.

The next step in the 2016 budget proposal will be for the Zionsville Town Council to consider the budget on a second reading at a special meeting Oct. 26.

In other business, the council: • Approved amendments to a collection of ordinances. One established timed noparking loading zones for trucks delivering to Main Street business; one removed regulation references to the former stop signal at the intersection of Ford and Bloor, which is now a roundabout; and another made changes to the town’s snow removal rules — citizens will have until noon of the second day after a snowfall to shovel their sidewalks or could face a $50 fine.

• Approved rezoning of 1.4 acres at Creekside Corporate Park from I-3 Urban Heavy Industrial to I-2 Urban General Industrial, matching the rest of the area.

• Approved consideration for a transition plan to meet the latest Americans with Disabilities Act regulations.

• Approved consideration for a charitable contributions policy for the town.

Dispatches Correction – In the Sept. 29 story about former Zionsville resident Matt Gentry running for mayor of Lebanon, Gentry’s opponent in the election — Democrat Michele Thomas — was misidentified as incumbent mayor Harold Lewis. Gentry defeated Lewis in the Republican primary.

Cruzin’ 4 a Cure fundraiser returns Oct. 10

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com During the past eight years, Josiah’s Ride: Cruzin’ 4 a Cure has raised $81,200 to help nine youth and their fundraiser families, beginning with namesake Josiah Nelson.

For the ninth annual event Oct. 10, two more local children and their families affected by leukemia and lymphoma are being sponsored by the fundraiser, which is open to those who ride motorcycles and those who don’t.

“We don’t want to lose the fact that it is a motorcycle ride during the day, but we don’t want to be categorized as only that,” said Chrissy Koenig, the event organizer who initiated the first ride. “There are other ways to get involved and help these families.”

“We’re not motorcycle riders,” said Angie Worzalo, whose son Joey was diagnosed with leukemia and was a beneficiary last year, “but we get two T-shirts, two breakfasts, two dinners.”

Those who register to ride receive the meals at the American Legion, 9950 E. 600 S., plus other benefits and are invited to participate in the journey from Zionsville to Creekside Lodge in Crawfordsville and Hoops Sports Bar in Frankfort. Non-riders may follow in cars.

“The first two or three years we thankfully struggled to find families [to benefit],” Koenig said. “The last couple of years we’re hearing

of more and more diagnosed children. You have to make a choice or you say, ‘Let’s just have two.’”

This year, Camden Cooper, 14, and Leah Killinger, 8, and their families will benefit from the ride.

“Every family has been from Zionsville, and we try to do that,” Koenig said. “We want our local residents and sponsors to know that they’re sponsoring a local family.”

Corporate sponsorships are the backbone of the fundraising, but the American Legion website includes a link for Paypal donations.

“It’s not just for Legion members. It’s a great avenue to support these kids,” Worzalo said.

Breakfast is open to the public before the motorcycles leave. Every morning of the event, red balloons are released in memory of Michael, a previous recipient, who “grew his angel wings” in 2011, Koenig said.

“You don’t have to register to come,” Koenig said. “You can just be there for the event.”

The riders return by 4 p.m. for a dinner, live music, raffle and auction at the American Legion. A bounce house and face painting for kids will be set up on the lawn.

This fall, take a trip out to Turkey Foot Park for a little fresh air and a crash course in history. The park offers a achievement few miles of trails along Eagle Creek, and one trail in particular has a new installment.

At the end of the footbridge is a tree cookie, or a cross section, taken from an old sycamore tree that fell down a few years ago.

Along the rings of the cookie are brass tags that match local, state and national events to the year, or ring, in which they occurred.

The person responsible for this project is Eagle Scout Jack Horn, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School. Horn became interested in this project when he heard the tree had fallen down next to the path.

“I wanted to educate the people of Zionsville about their history,” Horn said. With the help of his friends and family, Horn cut the tree, built the shelter and installed the slab, placing it next to the spot where the tree had originally fallen.

Next to the tree cookie is a plaque that explains what each of the brass tags stand for.

A salute to farmers Commentary by Ward Degler When it comes to physical endurance, I will put the American farm kids up against just about anybody. I learned plain talk just how tough they are when I was just a kid.

There was an announcement at school that anybody helping with the corn harvest could be excused from school on Friday. All I heard was the “get out of school” part, so I raised my hand. Harvesting corn? How hard could that be?

The man who hired me was Mr. Webster.

His son Henry was in my class, so I figured I had it made. I sidled up to Henry for instructions. All he said was, “The truck will pick you up at 6 o’clock.”

Six o’clock? Seriously? Wasn’t it still dark at that hour?

Actually, the truck was early when I raced into the pre-dawn darkness and crowded into the back of the truck with a dozen other kids from school.

At the Webster place, a long table had been set up with platters of bacon and sausage, bowls of scrambled eggs and fried potatoes.

Stacks of toast towered skyward, and jars of homemade jam were open and inviting. I

totally forgot I’d had a bowl of cereal before leaving the house.

Harvesting corn, it seemed, was going to be pleasant indeed. Or, so I thought. Halfway through my third piece of toast, Mr. Webster honked the truck horn.

“Time to get to work,” he said. At the edge of the cornfield, Henry handed each of us a machete.

“We have to cut the first six rows of corn by hand to make room for the corn picker,” he said.

By lunchtime, every muscle in my body was screaming and my hands were blistered.

Henry, meanwhile, wasn’t even winded.

By evening I could barely hold the machete, and my back was permanently stooped. When someone finally announced quitting time around sundown, I managed to crawl onto into the truck for the ride home.

The following week I decided to focus on my studies and leave farming to guys like Henry.

Mullet said the home was called a “tear down” by the realtor and the inspector told them he wouldn’t buy the house.

“Our goal all along was to preserve the house, to make it comfortable to live in, to make it attractive in the style in which it was built,” Mullet said.

Monique Schnabel had wanted to replace the siding on her Main Street home for some time, but the task was never a priority. When she and husband Brad decided to move forward this summer, workers discovered that most of the wood siding underneath was in great shape.

“It’s like she had a terrible dress on before and now she looks just right to me,” she said.

meet twice a month privately and decided to open a monthly drum circle to the public following requests from others to join.

Another set of lessons is expected to take place this winter. Information will be available on the Zionsville African Style Drum Troupe Facebook page. Approximately two dozen people are generally present for the drum circle.

The group spent the summer rehearsing to perform and donate proceeds to Water is Basic, an organization finding sustainable water solutions in areas of Africa, where much of the troupe’s music originates.

The troupe had its first public performance in mid-September in Fountain Square. They earned a $250 prize from the Fountain Square Arts Council for the Playing for Change Foundation. The troupe is scheduled to perform for Earth Day 2016.

“The idea for this drum troupe came during Womendrum last fall, when several women from the area decided we wanted to continue playing together,” said Rita Horn, a Zionsville resident.

In January, Horn organized lessons with a local drummer for those who wanted to learn African-style drum rhythms.

“He teaches things that are really basic,” she said. “Then people who are advanced can lay more on top of it.”

The first building erected in Zionsville specifically for educational purposes was the yellow brick acadback in the day emy on Walnut Hill, originally opened in 1876. The school initially boarded boys only.

Eventually, the building was converted for all genders to an elementary school on the first floor and a high school on the second.

By 1911, the town decided it needed a new high school, so the academy became the area’s elementary school.

Eventually the old building was razed to make room for a modern addition to the high school, which had been built directly to the north.

Zionsville artist makes creatures for fun, families

As the child of an art teacher, Jennifer Berger was always creating some type of artwork. That love of art as a hobby has carried over into adulthood. The Zionsville resident creates 3-D felt ornaments in the shapes of animals cover story and monsters. Her foray into art began with making baskets with her mother.

“She got me into doing the baskets. She kept saying she wanted me to make a basket, so I finally bought a kit and we made one basket between us,” Berger said.

Her mother lost interest in basket making, but Berger went on to find other crafting hobbies. A friend showed her how to felt and she began felting stockings and ornaments.

Berger moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana in 1995 to be closer to her family. Her sister-in-law, Candace Berger, worked in interior design and needed someone to assist her in architectural drawings.

“She taught me how to use AutoCAD,” Berger said. “I moved here because I had a full-time job that was fun and I got to see my niece and nephew everyday.”

Prior to 2009, her artwork was just a fun hobby that provided a nice, supplemental income. Berger’s CAD work began to slow down, so she began to ramp up production and experiment with her art.

“Over the years I developed things through experimenting – felted 3-D ornaments. Then I figured out how to stuff them.

Once I figured how to stuff them I found my niche. My first 3-D ornament was a pig,” Berger said.

She developed cats and pigs and then moved on to other animals. She was trying to figure out how to create a horse’s neck when she came up with her next idea: monsters.

“They’re kind of goofy looking things. I didn’t think I could sell them,” Berger said. “They were all one of a kind because they were experiments.”

Her brother, Jeff Berger, offered a piece of advice on her felt monsters.

“When I did the monsters my brother said, ‘You should market these as cubicle critters,’ People hang all kinds of things in their cubicle,” Berger said.

While most everything she creates is an ornament and includes a hook to hang the item, her work goes well beyond adorning a Christmas tree or cubicle. She always wanted to make a Cheshire Cat, and out of that desire Cheesy Cats and Growly Dogs were invented. The cats have a wide grin and the dogs have a dangling tooth.

The next reinvention of her art is mobiles.

“I wanted the frame work to be really simple that you could hang up when you have a baby, but then as you get older you can take them off and hang the ornaments,” she said.

She figured out how to create the frame of the mobile using, of all things, the ever popular Tinker Toys.

Berger sells her art through her Facebook page or through art shows in Indianapolis and throughout the state. Artifacts Gallery in Broad Ripple has showcased her art at Christmas for the past three years.

Show the road in 60 seconds This ought to get the creative juices flowing. Zionsville Community Schools is having a 60-second video contest for all grades. The theme, appropriately, is “The Road Through Life Begins Here.” The goal of the competition is for students to have their videos show the “how.” Entries are due Oct. 28. Prizes will be awarded, and the school district also will win a prize, of sorts; it will gain a window and insight on students’ “roads.” Student prizes include a $1,000 Visa gift card, two classroom iPads, iPad Minis and various amounts of loaded Visa gift cards, as well as a pizza party. ••• Maybe the Trump Show is wearing thin?

It could be too early to tell, but we’re watching New Hampshire, which since forever has been some kind of barometer (along with Iowa and South Carolina) as to the true political climate for Republican candidates.

According to Fox News, this month’s NBC/ Wall Street Journal Marist poll shows Carly Fiorina making a 10-point leap: from 6 percent last month to 16 percent this month.

“She still trails frontrunner Donald Trump, but her Granite State surge shows a potential path for Fiorina who has been mostly surfing the national zeitgeist,” Fox reported. We like what she has shown thus far, but we consider it just an appetizer for what we expect to be a battle royale between Trump and Fiorina as the months pass. If the Republican Party pushes any of the “insiders” over these two, it might as well fold the tent and call it a day.

In his latest book, the 2008 chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, now claims that more business executives should have gone to jail in the aftermath of the early days of what is now being called the Great Recession. He didn’t call for it at the time, nor did he mention the role of erstwhile government officials responsible to prosecute such things.

While one can only assume that Bernanke and his ilk are motivated to justify the unprecedented and extreme moves they took as “essential” to prevent a 1930-style depression, he does make a salient point regardless of his own culpability. If governments, agencies and mega-corporations are too big to fail, are there individuals who are too important to be held accountable?

Ours is a system of laws and rules administered in a most evenhanded and thoughtful way. But like barnacles on a ship in the water, we have accumulated all man-

ner of exceptions, special advocacy groups, and loopholes allowing for a perversion of the simple concept. If misdeeds occurred, either from neglect or intentional action, they should be fully explored. But we must be emphatic in applying the same standard to government bureaucrats as corporate ones. One might imagine that a failure on the part of the Justice Department to prosecute any individuals is related to a perception of collusion between powerbrokers in Washington and those in New York. Big financial firms are far more familiar with Pennsylvania Avenue than Main Street. Is the same true of the government officials we trust to enforce the rules? And can we rely on a system where the risk is only borne by one of the benefitting parties?

For more than three months, I totally avoided offering any input into our kitchen remodeling. If I had contributed humor my ideas, we would not have had an appliance garage, where we currently park our 2003 Black & Decker toaster. And I would have requested a dishwasher that made a little noise, so I don’t have to keep asking my wife: “Are you sure it’s on?”

Now it’s time to remodel my bathroom. It is not that Mary Ellen is forbidden to enter it; it’s just that she considers it forbidden territory. Let’s put it this way: we have been married 33 happy years, and then there were the two years we shared a bathroom.

We began by shopping for a toilet. After five minutes, I had already invested more time in that selection process than I had in picking out my new car … or my wife’s engagement ring. Oddly, the toilets were way up high on shelves. When’s the last time you looked up at a toilet? Don’t answer that.

One of the toilets had a sign that said: WILL FLUSH A DOZEN GOLF BALLS I couldn’t wait to try it.

“Dick, what’s all that racket up there?”

“Mary Ellen, I’ve just flushed a dozen Titleists down the toilet.”

“Wow, you must have played terribly today. What happened to cursing and breaking your club in half?”

Some manufacturers include a seat that doesn’t slam down but lowers noiselessly – a good idea for people who are occasionally frustrated by failure on the throne and tend to slam down the lid.

And finally, some of the toilets were labeled “smart.” They have 14 buttons and a remote control, but what they remotely control is still a mystery. I don’t want a smart toilet. I don’t want one that answers the phone, or is connected to Bluetooth, or gives me a weather report. I don’t want my bottom warmed or scented. I simply want my toilet to sit there.

And I promise to do the same.

Pointe for the Cure Masquerade Soiree set for Oct. 30 at IMA

It’s only fitting the Indiana Ballet Conservatory holds a fundraising event to benefit pediatric cancer research.

“There is a connection here because of fundraiser the children,” said Wilmara Manuel, IBC interim executive director. “What we do here is educate children and educate dancers. One of our former board members did work in pediatric cancer and thought it would be a good match. It evolved into the student dance in honor of a child currently fighting cancer. Our mission is not just to educate a dancer, but the whole student and to really make them Manuel aware of the world around them and how [they can] contribute. They have a gift to dance, and we have a great staff who is creating this piece. So they are using their gifts and talent to bring entertainment to raise awareness for that one night to help that child smile and forget about what they are fighting.”

The third annual Pointe to the Cure Masquerade Soiree will be held Oct. 30 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a VIP reception. The Masquerade Soiree and a cocktail and silent auction session begins at 6 p.m. The IBC performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Toby Theatre. There will be a special appearance by singer Josh Kaufman, winner of NBC’s “The Voice” during the cocktail session. Kaufman will hold a meet-and-greet during the VIP reception.

“We want to give back to the community,” Yakovleva-Randall said.

The performance is “Pulse: Dancing to the Beat of Our Own Drummer,” which was created by Yakovleva-Randall. It was

first performed in 2012.

“We’ve done selections from it since but this will be the full production,” YakovlevaRandall said. “We combine percussionists and contemporary dance. Why did I create this production? How could I not create this production? I come into the studio, and there Yakovlenais so much talent around me, my students Randall and amazing faculty member, Sergey Serglev, who is an award-winning choreographer.

“Then I come home, and here is my amazing husband [Daryl Randall] who is drumming. All this talent around me made me think about something unique and very special. I came up with story about a little boy who follows his dream and becomes a musician and a little girl following her dream and becomes a ballerina. The message to the audience is never give up, and always follow your dream.”

About 30 dancers, ranging in ages from 11 to 17, will perform in the show. Many young cancer patients will be invited.

“We have a child match program, so each student meets a child who is fighting cancer, and they dance in honor of the child,” Manuel said. “At the end of the evening they each walk across with a picture and they say, ‘Tonight I dance for,’ and they say the child’s name.”

Manuel said they raised $45,000 for Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and Team Joey, part of Heroes Foundation. The same three charities will benefit from the fundraiser this year.

The cost is $75 for the evening ($100 includes VIP reception).

Indiana Wind Symphony opens season with October Joyride

The name of the concert, set music for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Palladium, is derived from two pieces the IWS will play, called “October” by contemporary American composer Eric Whitacre and “Joyride” by 28-year-old American composer Michael Markowski “This will be the third piece of Markowski that we have played, and I think he has a bright future ahead of him,” IWS conductor Charles Conrad said.

Kelleen Strutz, a classical and jazz pianist and vocalist, will be the IWS’s special guest.

She will perform George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” which Conrad described as one of everyone’s favorites.

The concert also will feature several classical band works by significant composers, Conrad said.

One piece is “Pageant” by the late Vincent Persichetti, who is celebrating the 100th of the anniversary of his birth this year.

“Persichetti was one of several composers in the 1950s who started writing serious pieces for concert bands,” Conrad said. “That had not been in vogue for 20 and 30 years before that. The concert band, at the turn of the 20th century, was considered artistically in the same sphere as orchestras, ballet companies and operas. It had fallen badly in the 1930s and ’40s, to the point it had become more of historical relic playing patriotic concerts and more for entertainment than artistic merit.

Persichetti was one of those who started the band back up the food chain in terms of artistic merit.”

The show will close with Alfred Reed’s “Armenian Dances.” Reed died 10 years ago, so Conrad said this is in memory of the 10th anniversary of his passing.

Place grated zucchini in a bowl with remaining ingredients and mix all well.

‘Remembrances’ on stage Oct. 16

It could make you sad. It could make you cry. It could make you angry. It could make you uncomfortable. “Rememmusic brances: A Ballet in the Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust” will certainly make you think.

“You know how you feel when you sit there in your car for a minute after you’ve seen a serious movie, and you ask yourself, ‘What did I just see? What am I feeling?’” said choreographer Brian Honigbaum, who created the ballet in 2001. “That’s what we are trying to get.”

Dance Kaleidoscope will present the Indiana premier of Honigbaum’s historical ballet Oct. 16-18 at Clowes Hall.

Honoring the 11 million Jews and others who died in the Holocaust, Honigbaum stays true to the historical and chronological context of the event in various sections representing the atrocities of the Holocaust as the audience follows a family of three through it all.

“It’s a moment when the audience can take a deep breath,” said Mackenzie Kirk, a Carmel freshman at Brebeuf Jesuit High School performing in the ballet. “They can pause for a few minutes.”

This year marks the eighth year that Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre has participated in Holliday Park’s Hauntless family fun Halloween. This guided, candlelit tour through the park is perfect for those in search of a festive, kid-friendly Halloween activity. Members of Jr. Civic’s premier performing troupe ACT ONE as well as adult actors from the theatre contribute their talents to this educational night hike through the park.

Civic performers of all ages participate in the program by performing the roles of some not-so-scary creatures found at Holliday Park, such as an owl, beaver, bat, crayfish and moth. Additionally, Jr. Civic participants and their families line the trails and guide the park’s visitors as they meet the natives, roast marshmallows by the bonfire and make various fall-themed crafts.

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley In the 1600s, the Caribbean Arawak tribe was cooking meat on sticks laid over a fire.

They called this process “barbacòa” and this was the forerunner of the American Bar-B-Q. Two hundred years later, BBQ came to the southeastern United States, where pigs were cooked by pit-roasting before eating. The charcoal briquette was patented in 1897 by Ellsworth Zwoyer. After WWII, in the post-war boom in suburban lifestyle of the ’40s, open outdoor grills become a backyard fixture. The iconic Weber grill was born in 1952 by George Stephen. In the ’60s, in a bid to get customers to buy more natural gas, employees of the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company redesigned a charcoal grill to run on bottled propane.

These resulting broilers have led us to today’s tailgating grills.

If you look in a 2015 tailgating lot, you’ll see mostly gas grills using those little dark green 16 oz. propane cylinders. This season, we have two adjacent tailgate parties next to ours using identical Coleman Road Trip Grills. Although we have a newer version, the Coleman NXT300, we see more and more of these and less charcoal.

A most popular item for a tailgate party is crispy buffalo wings. We experimented in our own kitchen and have found the perfect crispy recipe.

Crispy Oven Baked Buffalo Wings Ingredients: (4 Servings) • 2.5 lbs. chicken wings • I Cup Frank’s Redhot Buffalo Wings Sauce • 2 cups flour • Salt and pepper Preparation: Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

shears (or knife). Cut wings at the joint into two parts each. Put wings on paper towels to dry. In a gallon size re-sealable plastic bag, put in two cups of all-purpose flour and a tablespoon of kosher salt and teaspoon of black pepper. Place wings in the flour bag and coat them with the mixture. Remove the wings with tongs, shaking off excess flour. Place wings on a sheet pan rack with the pan below. Place pan into the oven and bake 35 minutes. Remove wings and place them into a bowl of the buffalo wing sauce to coat them slightly. Replace the wings onto the rack and cook them five or ten minutes more until they crisp slightly.

Remove the wings and let them cool. Then place them in the refrigerator overnight in a zip bag. On game day, re-sauce and heat the wings on your grill in a disposable aluminum pan. Serve with celery and blue cheese or ranch dressing.

Welcome autumn with it intense fall colors and the beautiful pumpkins! Wicked pumpkin pie is our favorite Halloween treat in our family! This yummy pie is a breeze to make and it is so wicked that it won’t sit for too long on your kitchen table!!

Note: Did you know that the word “pumpkin” comes from the Greek “pepon”, which means “large melon?” The French changed it to “pompon.” The British converted it to “pumpion,” which eventually became “pumpkin” for the American colonists. While the origins of the word might have traveled continents, the pumpkin is native to North America.

Wicked Pumpkin Pie Ingredients: 3/4 cup milk, 3 large eggs, 2 tablespoon unsalted melted butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons ginger, 1/4 teaspoon cloves, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 1/2 cup canned plain pumpkin puree, corn meal, 1 1/3 cup heavy cream, cold, 2 tablespoons confectioner sugar, 1 tablespoon brandy (optional).

Directions: In a blender, combine the first nine ingredients on high speed. Add canned pumpkin and blend on medium speed. In the meantime prepare glass pie pan. Rub pan pie

with butter. Shake in dry corn meal; swirl to contact all butter. Turn pie pan upside down and tap, so excess cornmeal falls out. Pour pumpkin mix into prepared pie pan. Bake at 350F for 50 minutes or until knife comes out clean. Let it cool on a wire rack. For whipped cream, beat cream at medium speed to soft peaks, gradually add confectioner sugar then brandy.

Beat to stiff peaks. Accompany each wedge of pie with a dollop of whipped cream.

BTI presents a Halloween story

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Halloween is the prime time for spooky stories, but the Ballet Theatre of Indiana is taking a whole new turn with its Halloween performance. And it Performance happens to be based off a true story.

BTI will present “Macabre, a Night of Edgar Allen Poe Ballets” on Oct. 29 and 30. The show will be the season opener and focuses partly on Poe’s life and partly on his stories.

“We’ve never done a Halloween production,” said Audrey Robson, BTI’s director of public relations. “We definitely thought that using Edgar Allen Poe was very appropriate for the Halloween season.”

There will be tables for seating, and guests are able to purchase food and drinks during intermission. Robson said the stage is quite close to the tables and describes the show as very interactive.

“It’s definitely something that is unique to Indy,” Robson said. “It’s appearing as a ballet, and it masters up with the Halloween theme, so it’s a different way to experience Halloween. We’ve never done something quite like this before.”

The show takes place at 7:30 p.m. both nights and lasts about an hour and a half including intermission. Although alcohol is served, those under 21 are still welcome.

For 31 years, a black-caped rider mounted on a charging horse has terrified the passengers on the hayrides that each October roll through the 1800s family fun town and apple orchard of Conner Prairie. And the result is always the same: 30,000 children and adults annually lose their minds when the Headless Horseman cruises by their tractor-pulled hay wagon.

Based on the classic Washington Irvin tale “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the Headless Horseman at Conner Prairie has become as classic as the lighting of Monument Circle’s “world’s largest Christmas tree” in downtown Indianapolis. It’s just not Halloween without it.

The Headless Horseman isn’t the only activity that turns Conner Prairie into Conner Scarie.

Fishers Boo Bash returns Oct. 23

By Sam Elliott • news@currentzionsville.com For children and families needing an early start to their Halloween celebrations, the Fishers Boo Bash returns to the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater Performance from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The event, in its third year, offers safe trick or treating for children plus games, live music and a collection of fall and Halloween activities.

“We pair up with up to 60 businesses or organizations in the community,” Fishers marketing and public relations manager Casey Cawthon said. “Each one will host a safe trick or treat stop, and all those stops include candy or games or an activity for the kids to do something a little fun, and while they’re there, their parents can learn more about that business or organization.”

Fishers city staff will also have booths set up to connect with community members and the Fishers Parks and Recreation tent

Registration for the costume contest will be capped at 50 entrants in each group — ages 0 to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 10 and 11 to 12. Each age group will have four winners in categories of prettiest, scariest, most creative and best movie character.

That’s new,” Cawthon said. “We noticed there were a lot of families dressing up together, so we thought it would be fun to add a category for them to enter.”

Boo Bash attendees can take advantage of complimentary hot chocolate and Pat’s Philly Pretzels while supplies last, and the parks and recreation tent will have goodie bags available, also on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Entering just its third year, the Boo Bash has already become one of Fishers’ larger gatherings.

“Last year we had over 6,000 people at this event,” Cawthon said. “It’s become one of our more popular events.”

Namaste! In honor of Columbus Day and sailing the ocean blue, I’m proud to share October’s Aquatic Yoga Pose. Yoga is about yoga making space for stillness and listening to the voice that arises from the quiet. Now let me introduce Fish Pose.

Fish are quite different from all other animals. Their unique makeup of gills and fins, and the fact that they live only in the water, sets them apart in the animal kingdom. Fish see the world from below the surface, and what a world they see! Living among bright coral, glowing anemone and giant whales makes being different very exciting.

Transform yourself into a fish to see the world from a different perspective. Lay on your back and place your arms by your sides.

Press your forearms into the floor and lift your chest and back up. As your spine starts

to arch, slide your hands under your bottom, palms down. Lift your chin up, coming on to the crown of your head and look behind you.

Stay in the pose and breathe.

It’s fun to try fish in front of a mirror or with a partner. Lie head to head and as you lift your chin, look behind you. See you if you can see your reflection or make eye contact with your friend. Try to make fish lips in your fish pose.

Fish pose helps you take deep, full breaths.

It keeps your abdominal organs healthy, too.

Fish pose relieves stress and refreshes your mind and body, like a dip in cool water.

Teaching your child to be a good sport

Raising children and managing the ups and downs of youth sports often go hand in hand.

For parents, this not only Kid’s health means cheering from the stands but also helping children learn the importance and characterbuilding value of good sportsmanship. Here are some strategies for raising kids who not only enjoy sports, but are good sports, too.

Set expectations.

Take the time to share a pre-season conversation with your child about how he or she should act on the field, sidelines and in the locker room. It’s easier to hold kids accountable for their behavior if the ground rules are firmly established.

Model the attitude you want your child to convey.

Remember that when you are yelling at the referee from the sideline (yes, even when he missed calling that penalty), you are sending a message to your child that this behavior is acceptable. The same holds true for criticizing

your child’s coach. Even if you disagree with the coaching strategy, resist undermining the coach in front of your child.

Positively reinforce good behavior. Touchdowns and home runs are rewarded with cheers and high fives, but exceptional sportsman-like conduct is sometimes overlooked.

Offer praise when you notice your athlete showing good sportsmanship, such as gracefully handling a tough loss, helping an opponent stand up post tumble, or respectfully accepting a questionable call against.

Emphasize your child’s value off the field.

Sports are great for kids; they build confidence, provide exercise and help teach social skills. It’s important, however, for children to recognize that winning isn’t everything.

Breast cancer and the eye Commentary by Tammy Wittman October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Many people do not realize that breast cancer can spread to women’s health the eye. In fact, the most common type of ocular tumor in women comes from breast cancer. I have seen many breast cancer survivors who tell me they did not know this.

Sadly, often a patient will not experience any visual symptoms with an ocular tumor.

In fact, when I was doing my externships with a retinal specialist, I saw a patient who was referred to us for a suspicious looking ocular tumor. She was in her late 50s and was visiting her daughter. Her daughter want-

ed her mom’s eyes checked because she had not had them checked “in years.”

This tumor turned out to be metastatic from breast cancer. The patient did not even know she had breast cancer at all.

Door closes at Village Kitchen

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com After being in business for approximately six months, the Village Kitchen has closed. But the space won’t be empty restaurant long. Northside local Zak Kahn has plans to bring in Darrin’s Coffee for the morning with wines and high-end bourbons being served in the evening. Light breakfast and lunches will likely be served during the day.

“We’re moving on to greater things,” said Darrin Marion, who was expecting to open at 98 S. Main St. but was unable to complete the project due to building restrictions.

“It’s been a challenge these last couple of months,” said Village Kitchen owner Bryan Avery, who announced the closure of the 112 S. Main St. restaurant Oct. 3.

He and his wife initially hoped to open in January but decided to make more updates than originally intended to the space, formerly Plum’s Upper Room. They reworked the kitchens and bathrooms, cleaned the high wooden ceiling beams and refinished the floors.

“As a business person you decide. Do you invest more or do you cut your losses and go?” Avery said. “The writing’s on the wall.”

He had been active in community events, participating in the Lion’s Club Fourth of July celebration and Fall Festival.

“We were doing pretty well as we first opened, and [business] trailed off the last month and a half,” he said.

He praised Zionsville residents who supported his business but doesn’t have any plans for the near future. “I’m going to let the dust settle on this,” he said.

In the meantime, Marion has plans to open another coffee location in two weeks in Clermont on Crawfordsville Road.

Online pre-owned car retailer Vroom will open its latest reconditioning and fulfillment center in Whitestown, eventunew biz ally bringing as many as 300 jobs to the area after the site opens in December.

The company, founded in 2013, claims to be the largest online car retailer in the United States and offers customers refurbished automobiles with free delivery and a seven-day, moneyBloch back, no-questions-asked return policy.

The company has leased the former Subaru building in a 501,120-square-foot facility on Indianapolis Road. The new location will be Vroom’s second reconditioning center along with a location near Dallas, Texas. Vroom’s Whitestown home will allow for 24-hour delivery of cars to customers within a 300-mile radius.

“We’re looking forward to expanding our reconditioning and fulfillment operations, and we think the Indianapolis area is the perfect place for us to have a presence, right at the

crossroads of America,” Vroom CEO Allon Bloch said. “This new location will improve our customers’ car buying experience even further as we work toward the goal of reducing our national delivery timeline to just 24 hours.”

The Whitestown facility will be able to house 2,500 cars and will administer 126-point inspections by technicians on all vehicles before they’re sold.

Vroom is planning to hire approximately 100 local workers with auto repair and logistics experience when the facility opens in Whitehead December and eventually plans for the Whitestown location to have 300 employees. Currently, the company employs 140 workers in New York City and its other reconditioning center.

“Vroom brings an innovative business model to Whitestown and its convenient, consumerfriendly approach to car sales online makes it exactly the type of employer we want to establish and grow here,” said Molly Whitehead, executive director of the Boone County Economic Development Corporation. “We look forward to seeing Vroom’s success and integration with the Boone County community.”

The goal was to achieve an inviting and engaging room for the family to enjoy!

1. The porch was added off of the existing dining room, creating a natural transition of spaces.

2. Functional screen windows were installed to allow fresh air and sunshine into the space.

3. A wood-burning stone fireplace and TV were installed to create a prime focal point in the room.

4. A custom beverage counter was designed just outside the white French doors for functional entertaining.

5. The existing brick wall and custom white columns add contrast to the dark wood ceiling and flooring.

6. The addition was furnished with rustic, industrial selections.

The homeowners have lived here for 2 1/2 years and were definitely ready for a perfect porch addition!

Istanbul’s Dolmabahçe Palace Commentary by Don Knebel

Istanbul’s Dolmabahçe Palace is one of the most spectacular buildings of its kind in the world. Its grandeur hastened travel the collapse of the empire that built it.

By the middle of the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire was beginning to experience the economic stresses that led to its becoming known as the “Sick Man of Europe.” To convince his subjects and European monarchs things were not as bad as they appeared, in 1843 Sultan Abdülmecid II began building an opulent palace on a 61-acre site on the European bank of the Bosporus. The Western-style Dolmabahçe Palace was named for a garden that once occupied the site. When completed in 1856, the palace included three sections, one for administration, one for receiving visitors and one a harem for the wives and concubines of the Sultan. The 500,000 square feet of useable space included 285 rooms, 43 toilets and six Turkish baths, one incorporating Egyptian alabaster. Fourteen tons of gold and six tons of silver adorned the palace, which

also showcased Baccarat crystal and Venetian glass. The ceremonial hall featured a 4.5-ton chandelier, the largest in Europe.

The Dolmabahçe Palace cost the equivalent of 35 tons of gold, 25 percent of the Ottoman Empire’s annual revenue. The Sultan financed this extravagance and the expense of his simultaneous involvement in the Crimean War with foreign loans, contributing to the eventual collapse of his empire. When Atatürk founded the Turkish Republic in 1923, he used the Dolmabahçe Palace as his summer residence.

The Dolmabahçe Palace and its magnificent riverside grounds are available for guided tours. Visitors ascend a staircase with crystal balusters to view its many splendors, including a bedroom in the harem where Atatürk died on Nov. 10, 1938. The bedroom clock is forever stopped at 9:05 a.m., the minute of Atatürk’s death.
