Zionsville police are still searching for a suspect who fatally shot a man in his driveway Sept.

Infant death – A Zionsville man was arrested Oct. 2 for shaking his three-month-old child, which resulted in the infant’s death. Ronald D. Robbins, 23, is accused of grabbing and shaking his son on Sept. 11, which led to severe bleeding on the brain. He died on Sept.

23. Robbins is being held without bond in the Boone County Jail. He is charged with aggravated battery and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Man arrested after carjacking Zionsville family

By Nick Poust • news@currentzionsville.com Several Zionsville residents are recovering from a harrowing Sept. 25 ordeal in Anderson that led to a carjacking with a famCrime ily member inside the vehicle.

Information provided by the Anderson Police Dept. states that Robert Rickard III, 34, approached a black 2015 Honda CRV stopped at a red light at Scatterfield Road and

59th Street and told the 52-year-old driver and her 12-year-old son and 81-year-old mother to leave the vehicle.

Rickard then allegedly sat in the seat behind the driver and asked her to drive, but she fled with her son to a nearby Steak ‘N Shake to call police. The driver’s 81-year-old mother remained in the front passenger seat during the incident.

With police vehicles in pursuit, the vehicle stopped near 56th Street and Shadeland Av-

enue in Indianapolis, where officers found the suspect and the unharmed 81-year-old woman.

Officers arrested Rickard and charged him with robbery and auto theft.

During a police interview in Anderson, the report states that Rickard told investigators he feared he was being followed by suspicious vehicles and didn’t immediately pull over because he wanted more police present.

The name of the family has not been released.

Machine simplifies road repairs

The Zionsville Street and Stormwater Dept. has a new machine that will make road repair a quicker and easier transportation process.

The $17,000 milling machine is the first of its kind for Zionsville. It is designed to repave small sections of roads.

“Before we had this machine we had two methods of maintaining roads. That was what we called the throw-and-go method or full depth repairs,” said Amanda Dorman, Zionsville director of communications. “Throw-and-go is basically what people know as pothole repair.

That’s when there are potholes and you put asphalt in a hole and compact it, then move on to the next area. A full depth repair is really cutting out a full section of roadway and fully re-constructing it all the way down from the sub-grade up to the surface.”

Those two methods of repair have pros and cons.

“This milling machine essentially replaces that throw-and-go process. Basically, for potholes that have three or more inches of depth it’s fine to fully re-construct the road,” Dorman said. “It’s where there are areas where

there are surface imperfections that are only an inch or so deep. They’re so shallow they don’t hold asphalt well. To do a full pothole repair doesn’t work as well. It’s not a great long-term solution because they are shallow and when you place asphalt in it, it creates a lunar-like surface.”

The machine has already been put to use repairing parts of Pine Street. With brush and limb season approaching, use of the machine will be put on hold until leaves and limbs can be cleaned up.

“It’s great because it’s a fast and efficient process,” Dorman said.

Painted pumpkins to raise funds

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Every October, Akard True Value Hardware in Zionsville holds the Pumpkins for a Purpose fundraiser. The tradition giving back began in 2013.

“The idea came around when people were talking about painting pumpkins pink to raise awareness for breast cancer,” said Leigh Ann Akard, third generation family business partner at Akard True Value.

“I got to thinking about it and thought it was such a cute idea. But when I really got to thinking about it I realized there are so many different organizations, causes and wonderful things that are looking for support and donations, and even more importantly ways to raise awareness.”

Participants can paint a pumpkin for a cause they support and bring it to Akard True Value Hardware by Oct. 14. along with a 4 x 6 printed information card naming the pumpkin and information about the beneficiary.

“It could be something as simple as a Halloween pumpkin or something relating to their cause. Each day during the contest, we’ll promote one pumpkin on our social media sites,” Akard said. “At the end, all the pumpkins will be on display. People can vote on which one

they like the best. It’s a penny a vote. Each organization keeps the money given to vote for their pumpkin.”

The group with the most votes will receive an additional $100 donation.

The pumpkins will be on display for public voting Oct. 17-31 at Akard True Value Hardware, 25 Boone Village in Zionsville. They will also be featured at the Boone Village Halloween party Oct. 27.

“Our hope in doing this is to help push out the word and educate,” Akard said.

Summer tasks are still waiting Commentary by Ward Degler If I was where I should be in the grand scheme of getting things done, I’d be hauling out my leaf rakes about plain talk now and checking them for autumn readiness. I’d have the gardens cut back, cleaned and mulched for winter. I’d be crossing off items on a checklist as I prepared the lawn mower, tiller and weed whip for the long, dark and dreary cold season.

Then I’d saunter into the house and relax with a cup of hot chocolate and wait for the leaves to start falling so I could man the rakes. Unfortunately, that’s not where I am.

The truth is, there is still a whole passel of summer tasks as yet unfinished. The brick patio next to the deck, for instance. It’s not only mostly finished, it’s been mostly finished all year. And there’s that final set of concrete blocks needed for the edge of the front garden. That project has been patiently on hold for a very long time. And for some reason I haven’t scraped and painted the house trim yet. That should have been finished by July.

I was going to repair the fence and rebuild the gate last summer. Funny, but it’s still waiting for hammer, nails and paint brush.

It’s a puzzle how I’ve fallen so far behind. I do recall there were a lot of rainy days awhile back, and I honestly think I haven’t been able to catch up since then. If memory serves, that was 1980. Or was it the year before?

It isn’t just the summer tasks that have suffered, either. I just put the snow shovel and sidewalk salt away last week. And I finally installed the weather stripping on the garage door to keep last winter’s snow out.

The hard truth is that I haven’t gotten today’s work done because I’m still working on yesterday’s. I was going to mow the lawn — perhaps for the last time this season — last Wednesday, but there was a project from the weekend I had to finish first. Then it rained, of course, and now the grass is so tall it ripples in the wind like the plains of the Serengeti.

Fact is, the lawn will get mowed, the fence will get repaired, the trim will get painted and the brick and concrete work will get done.

I just can’t say for sure when. I still have a couple of last winter’s tasks to finish first.

Zionsville prepares to celebrate state’s bicentennial

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com For more than five weeks it’s traveled by farm equipment, roller coaster, horse and buggy, Studebaker, boat and race car.

And when the Indiana Bicentennial torch cover story enters Zionsville Oct. 13, it will briefly travel in a 1939 Buick before the trek to Lincoln Park just days before the final stop at the Indiana Statehouse.

As part of the state’s bicentennial celebration, a torch modeled after the one on the state flag will make its way through all 92 counties. It is being carried by thousands of relay participants. The torch will enter Boone County earlier that day, then travel through downtown Lebanon before heading east on Oak Street to Lincoln Park. After a brief stop in the park it will continue along First Street to Sycamore Street, heading east to Michigan Road where it will be passed to Hamilton County at Zionsville Presbyterian Church.

Festivities will begin at noon with cake, ice cream and music as part of a free event in Lincoln Park. The torch is expected to arrive around 1:45 p.m.

“We can’t predict exactly when it will arrive,” said Rhonda Crawshaw, chair of Zionsville’ Bicentennial Committee and a member of the Boone County Bicentennial Committee. Thanks to a GPS device and camera built into it, the torch’s progress can be tracked in real time through a mobile app.

Eleven Zionsville residents were nominated in the spring to carry the torch. All 11 were selected.

“We really felt that everyone made a noteworthy contribution to the community,” Crawshaw said. “We wanted as many people to participate as possible.”

At the park, Abraham Lincoln impersonator Danny Russel will share the former president’s history. The Zionsville Community High School Wind Ensemble Band will perform, and town council members — past and present — will be part of the afternoon’s festivities.

“The torch run was designed to unite Indiana as one,” Crawshaw said. “The symbolism is to ignite the flame and pass it to

Commentary by Will Durst An estimated 84,000,000 Americans tuned into the first presidential debate at New York’s Hofstra University last month, but Donald Trump did not seem to be among them. Mentally he had checked out, maybe to seek admission to Dr. Snuffleupagus’ clinic to score some surplus Claritin. A consensus of post debate polls revealed 54 percent of respondents thought Hillary Clinton won, 24 percent considered Trump the winner while the other 22 percent either had no opinion or looked at the questioner like they were crazy for even asking. The month of September witnessed a Trump surge that thrust the real estate mogul into a dead heat, so these numbers indicate half his supporters thought he lost. His own spin-doctors were ecstatic he managed to pronounce his own name correctly. Trump embarked on a post-debate oblivion tour to tell whoever would listen (Fox News) how everybody was telling him he had totally won the debate by a wide margin. Presumably these are the same “delusionals” who so often remark on his terrific temperament.

Not just a great temperament, the best temperament in the history of presidential politics. The major debate knock against Hillary Clinton is that she was too scripted, but that’s more Team Trump sniping, jealous that the former Secretary of State was able to string words together into actual sentences with subjects and predicates and points and stuff. The show’s not over. There are debates scheduled for Oct. 9 and Oct. 19.

Happy birthday, Indiana

Every 200 years or so, we ought to have a party. And since we’ve waited so long, let’s make it a big one. Many of us Hoosiers remember from our Indiana history class that our fine state officially joined these United States December 11, 1816, to be exact. Over these 20 decades that mark Indiana as a defined political geography, we have often taken note of the significant passing of time, the accomplishments of those who came before us and the gentle landscape with which we find ourselves presented.

During the celebrations commemorating our centennial year, we recognized our famous citizens and contributors. We built monuments to our contributions to the preservation of the Union. We created our first community foundation. We founded our system of state parks. We paraded while brass bands played.

Today, yet another century has come and gone. Since the land upon which we now reside has been home to countless humans

for 10,000 years, we might wonder if a couple of hundred years warrants much of a to-do. Yet given the fleeting days of short human lives, shouldn’t we pause occasionally to recognize our contributions, however fleeting?

Officially, the lead party planner is the Indiana Bicentennial Commission (in.gov/ ibc). These good people have put together all kinds of important facts, places to visit and things to do in honor of the anniversary.

But if your busy calendar allows for only one birthday party for Indiana, consider joining me for a leg of the statewide Bicentennial Torchbearer Relay to be held at Conner Prairie in the late afternoon Oct. 13 – then stick around for the popular Headless Horseman tradition at the interactive history park!

Our cat just celebrated her seventh birthday. Hooray! We’ve managed to keep her alive all these years despite moving humor houses, acquiring a dog and occasionally forgetting about her entirely over long weekends. The most amazing thing is, I might love Ginger more than my kids (interpret that sentence however you’d like; both ways are true). And that’s saying something because I am not a pet person and, according to my husband, Doo, I am cold and dead inside. Perhaps that’s why I love the cat. She totally appeals to my practical, stoic nature.

1. Felines have the lowest maintenance plans of any domesticated animal, especially the short-hair domestic options.

I’ve never taken Ginger for a walk in the single digit temps, swept up enough of her hair to form another cat, or cleaned her diarrhea out of the shag carpet. I cannot say the same for our lab.

2. Cleaning the litter box makes for the perfect punishment for the short people who live with us. Even with the multi-cat clumping and ammonia-absorbing super formula, scooping poop is stinky and degrading. Love it!

3. I dig her attitude. When I walk in from work, there’s no needy bull like I get from the dog (or my kids). If Ginger decides to grant me with her presence, it’s more like, “Hey, woman. You’re alive.

I’m going back to my room. Call me when dinner’s ready.” So cool.

4. O.K., I may not be entirely dead inside, because I do believe there is something magical about having a soft fuzzy creature purring with contentment on your lap on a cold winter’s night. Who needs the snuggie when you have a cat? Actually, Ginger’s favorite spot is atop our snuggie, making for a double dose of adorable warmth!

5. You never know what you’ll find in the fridge. Seriously, Doo thought he heard meowing in the kitchen, opened the door to the refrigerator, and there she was. Oops! No worries, Ginger hadn’t been cooling for more than a minute or so. Five tops.

Long live Ginger, and cats everywhere!

Presidential debate needs clarity Commentary by Wendy Brant Let’s determine what really counts in this presidential election. Hillary Clinton is a socialist.

She promotes the redistribution of humor wealth through disproportionate taxation on the wealthy. A President Clinton would lead in determining who gets subsidies and in what amounts. Class envy is used to promote socialism. Political correctness abounds. Sadly, it is a divider, not a unifier.

Our Constitution guarantees the right of each citizen to equal opportunity under the law — except for the Clintons. Politically, Hillary and her husband have been notorious for one scandal after another. Hillary opposes changes Donald Trump believes are necessary.

Trump is a businessman who will lower taxes, end punitive regulations and create a national climate in which businesses can thrive again.

He supports returning rights back to the states that creeping socialism has hijacked from them. ObamaCare will end, replaced by interstate competition, assuring better insur-

ance options for more people at lower costs.

Trump will create better school choices for parents, especially those in inner cities. Citizens deserve a good education, acquiring the skills to support themselves without dependence upon government subsidies.

Trump will go after habitual criminals, especially illegal aliens. He is right. A nation ceases to be viable with open borders. Yet he supports legal immigration with careful vetting to assure that peaceful individuals are coming here for the right reasons.

He will nominate people for the Supreme Court with the judicial philosophy of an Antonin Scalia, not judges who create law.

Our nation was founded upon Judeo Christian precepts and a reverent faith in God. Bless Franklin Graham for going state by state leading in prayer for spiritual revival in America This election presents a somber defining choice!

need to cancel the entire parade. Although disappointing, everyone involved recognized that it was the correct decision.

Notwithstanding the cancellation of the parade, the Fall Festival continued and was successful. So, even though we did not have the chance to parade, all of us in the Great Lakes Shrine Association and Murat Shriners came away from the experience with a renewed appreciation of the spirit of volunteerism in this great community and, especially, the Zionsville Lions.

Getting a leg up Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Publicly sharing personal medical problems is not a good idea. Several years ago, I mentioned in a column that I humor was losing my sense of smell. A doctor wrote me and suggested I might have a brain tumor. Others just said I should have my head examined. I’m not sure if this was the same advice.

I received similar notes of concern when I reported my sneezing fits — sometimes a couple dozen achoos in a row. A reader commented this might be an indication of a severe case of “drug-induced rhinitis” and that she was going to pray for me. Then she said, “God bless you.” She needed to say it 25 times.

One suggestion for my persistent nighttime leg cramps was mustard — cheap mustard, not gourmet types like Grey Poupon or Gulden’s. More like French’s. He recommended two teaspoons right before going to sleep. I didn’t tell my wife I tried it, and when we got into bed, Mary Ellen suggested I change toothpaste brands. She said not only did my breath stink, but also my teeth were yellowing.

Referring to my leg cramps, one reader asked, “Dick, ever try soap?” I took that kind of

personally. I asked my doctor about all these cures. He had heard that putting a bar of soap in the bed worked, but he hadn’t mentioned it to me, figuring I already knew about it. How would I know that? Did I go to Harvard medical school like he did?

I tried the soap, hoping Mary Ellen wouldn’t notice. She’s always accusing me of falling for every wacky idea.

“Dick, what’s that strong soapy smell?”

“Look, Mary Ellen, don’t think I’m totally nuts — but I put a bar of soap between the bed sheets.”

“That is incredibly weird, but it might cure those leg cramps.”

My absolute favorite email response was from a woman who said she sometimes missed work because she spent the entire day in bed with gramps. She thought it was a hereditary problem.

I’m hoping hers was a spelling problem.

ZFD takes cancer prevention steps

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Because cancer is the leading cause of firefighter deaths in the U.S., according to the International Association of Firefighters, the Zionsville Fire Dept. has taken steps to help increase the safety of lopublic safety cal firefighters.

During and after a call, firefighters are instructed to decontaminate gear to help reduce exposure to contaminates. The equipment was recently added to their vehicles to speed the process.

“Even before we get back in the firetruck, we do a gross decontamination, getting the really thick particles off gear multiple Beam times throughout the event,” Deputy Chief Jeff Beam said.

ZFD recently purchased 35 sets of fire gear, costing $2,713 per set, to ensure that each of the 82 firefighters has two sets of gear.

“It’s very easy for us to get those things clean, to wash those items and get (dressed) in a clean set while we’re waiting for the others to dry,” Beam said. “We’re never going to completely eliminate the exposure, but we try to limit the exposure.”

Earlier this month, firefighters received decontaminate instruction from Lt. Steve Hayes, who conducted a cancer prevention training seminar. Cancer survivors from other local departments shared their personal stories with ZFD. No cancer-related deaths or illness have been reported by ZFD firefighters, but these steps are an attempt to prevent that in the future.

“We’re a very young department, and so luckily we have not seen any of those items come up in our membership,” Beam said. “This is all purely there to try to avoid just those things from happening to our members.”

Vinyl label releases first album

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Jeremy Zucker couldn’t understand why one of his favorite albums, “Touched,” by Ken Stringfellow, hadn’t been new biz pressed on vinyl. So he suggested to the musician that he could find a way to have it re-released.

“He said, ‘Let’s do it,’” said Zucker, a Zionsville resident whose business is based at zWORKS. “So then I had to figure it out.”

Music-lover Zucker had met artists such as Stringfellow through his website, Indy Rock Live, which he started years earlier as a way to see.

Learning about the record-making process through local contacts, Zucker created his vinyl-only boutique record label, Azucar Records, and had 500 copies of “Touched” manufactured.

“I thought, why not give this a shot?” he said. “Now it exists. I wanted to make it exist.

This means something to me.”

To celebrate its availability as a limited edition, Zucker chose orange vinyl for the album.

Copies are sold at Luna Music in Indianapolis and through online orders that Zucker personally fills.

2001, which Zucker said was a source of comfort for many people. The release of the vinyl version coincided with the 15th anniversary of the album’s release, and sales have been brisk during the first few weeks within the U.S. and abroad.

Zucker noted here is a gap in vinyl availability for music produced between the 1990s and 2000s.

“I’m taking those beloved albums from the last 20 years and putting it in this format,” he said.

Zucker hopes the venture will set an example for his three children.

“If you have an idea to do something, why not give it a shot?” he said.

Buyer demand remains strong Commentary by Jim Litten According to statistics compiled by F.C. Tucker Company, August was the busiest month in 2016 for central real estate Indiana’s real estate market so far. Compared to this time last year, pended sales grew more than 15 percent in August, and eight of the 14 counties Tucker tracks recorded doubledigit percentage growth in sales. This growth helped raise overall year-to-date sales, which are now 6.3 percent ahead of this time last year.

Boone County’s pended sales jumped more than 46 percent in August 2016 compared to August 2015. Prices have also increased by 3.6 percent over last year to an average of $288,544. Low inventory continues to challenge the market, and Boone County reflected the 14-county average – a decline of approximately 19 percent – in available homes.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sales price increased 4.6 percent to $394,644.

• Inventory moved at a faster pace in Zionsville in August 2016. Overall, homes sold in 66 days – 11 fewer days than this

time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had fewer options available to them. Last month, 178 homes were available for sale – 21 fewer homes compared to August 2015.

• Pended home sales increased in Zionsville. In August 2016, 52 homes sold – an increase of 23 homes compared to August 2015.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, two were priced $1,000,000 to $1,999,999; 13 were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 18 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; 11 were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and eight were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

Realtors definitely felt the momentum in August. Buyer demand is still strong, and we could see stronger sales if inventory returns to the level it was two or three years ago.

We expect 2016 to be our best year since the housing market began its recovery.

Cursed Castle begins Oct. 8

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Through the past 53 years, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has seen haunted houses ranging from family fun pirate ships to vampires, carnivals, a wicked workshop and more.

The haunted houses change each year.

This year, the museum will be transformed into a Cursed Castle to provide two different events for families.

“We offer two unique experiences for families for Halloween. The first is Lights-On Hours, and those are for the trick-or-treaters, for kids to go through with parents and get a goodie bag,” said Bis Feldman, head witch and co-chair of this year’s haunted house. “Our haunters have no makeup and are very friendly. The second is Frightening Hours. That is more of a typical haunted house experience. Haunters don’t touch anybody that goes through. It’s more of a jump-out, creepy kind of scare situation for those that enjoy that type of thing on Halloween.”

younger children wanting to participate in the past. There is no age minimum.

This is Robert Frost’s opening of a poem about the peace and pleasure of October.

He writes about how we are beguiled. Defined, this can mean “to cause time to pass pleasantly.”

And for anyone traveling to a football game there is no secret that the season has changed. The lush wet summer green leaves have turned brown. The harvesting machines bring in corn and beans and farmers are cutting hay. The mornings and evenings are cool while the days are mild and warm. The trees are beautiful, making the drive to the game more enjoyable. Some families are even stopping at roadside stands to buy apples, cider and pumpkins on their way home from the game. There is a smell of burning leaves in the air.

If we give an exam to tailgaters about why they love the fall, they will check the box for “all of the above.”

Keeping with the season, here is a great seasonal recipe to give you pleasure.

Apple crisp Ingredients: 8 to 10 apples, 2 cups flour, 1 cup white sugar, 1 1/4 cups rolled oats, 1 1/4 cups brown sugar, 3 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 1/4 cups butter Preparation: In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, butter, oatmeal, 1 cup of brown sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon.

into thin strips. Once you have enough to fill a 9 x 13 glass pan to just under the rim, mix the apples with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and the remaining 1/4 cup of brown sugar. After you’ve mixed the apples and brown sugar together, spread the flour mixture over the top, making sure to smooth it evenly across the entire pan. Bake in a 350 oven for 50 to 60 minutes or until the crisp mixture turns a nice golden brown and the apples have lost their crispness but still have some body. Refrigerate overnight. Then cut into manageable size pieces. Place these into a plastic sealable 9 x 13 container (the kind that can be burped).

This crisp is delicious on its own, served with whipped cream, or if you want to have some dry ice in your cooler, with ice cream.

Penne puttanesca Submitted recipe and photo courtesy of Donatello’s Italian Restaurant in Carmel This is a great option for vegetarians at Donatello’s Italian Restaurant. It does have anchovies but can be left out if you want.

There are various accounts of the origin, but the popular theory is that in the 1950s a chef was serving his customers and barely had any ingredients left in the pantry. He threw together what he had — some tomatoes, olives, and capers — and invented a pasta meant for a peasant, because it’s made with leftover ingredients. Hence, the colorful name.

Notes: I know some people don’t like anchovies but they should melt away and you won’t really know they’re there except they add a nice salty, seaside flavor to this dish.

We recommend pitted kalamata for this dish.

Serves: 1 to 2 people Ingredients: • 1 cup whole peeled tomatoes • 2 teaspoons of finely chopped garlic • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil • Handful of pitted kalamata olives • 1 teaspoon of capers • 2 pieces of anchovy • 1 cup of cooked penne pasta Directions: Put on a medium pot of water to boil.

Drain the juice from the tomatoes and place them in a mixing bowl. Put on a latex glove and squeeze the whole peeled tomatoes until they are small bits but still somewhat chunky.

Grab a medium-sized skillet and heat it to medium heat. Pour olive oil in the pan and let it warm up without burning or bubbling up.

Add garlic (you can add more or less based on preference) but make sure it doesn’t brown or burn. Burned garlic will ruin the dish and you’ll need to start over. Use a low heat and be sure to stir the garlic so it doesn’t

stick. The finer you chop the garlic the more it’s likely to burn, but finely chopped garlic also helps spread the flavor throughout the dish, so just keep an eye on that.

You’ll also want to add some anchovy. This should melt into the olive oil instead of being one big piece. You can break it up and stir it with your cooking fork or chop it ahead of time. Some people like using anchovy paste but we think whole anchovies are better.

Make sure you don’t add too much olive oil. You’ll be able to tell when you add your tomatoes.

Once the garlic is cooked but not brown, add the tomatoes. You’ll hear them sizzle so make sure the heat isn’t too high.

Your goal is to have the olive oil and tomatoes to mix together seamlessly. Heat and stirring should accomplish that.

Once the sauce is almost done — you can tell the tomatoes are warm and soft without being mushy — you can add your capers, oregano and olives. You want the olives slightly cooked so they are warm and soft, but they don’t take as long as the rest so you add them at the end.

Add the fresh cooked pasta to the sauce while it’s still hot and it will absorb some of the sauce before you scoop it into a bowl.

Blueprint for Improvement: Transitional family room Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background Info: This 1990’s Carmel home in the Brookfield neighborhood was lacking some character. The homeowners were looking for help in reflecting their personal style within their home.

Before problems: The fireplace wall in this home was primarily a large expanse of drywall. The homeowners did not like that their fireplace was lost on a very large wall in their living room.

After

After solutions: The goal was to create a focal point in their living room that results in a great first impression for their home.

1. The existing cabinets were modified to house all of their existing AV equipment. The original cabinets were painted a rich gray color and the bottom cabinets now have a copper-colored laser-cut door insert.

2. The original mantel was replaced with two handcrafted rustic Colorado lodgepole pine mantels that help draw the eye upward and add an elegant touch of nature.

3. The design above the mantel mimics the design in the copper door fronts. This piece creates a much more dramatic fireplace wall for the center of the home, and is more appropriately proportioned for the large wall.

4. Stacked stone was used to create the base of the fireplace and the hearth. This stone gave the homeowners a great color palate to draw from for the rest of their living room space.

5. New floors were installed throughout the living room and first floor. Wide plank, hand-scraped hardwood floors completed the wholistic aesthetics of the space.

Saadian tombs in Morocco Commentary by Don Knebel The Saadian tombs in Marrakech, Morocco, reflect the architectural achievements of the Saadi dynasty. They also reflect travel an era of religious tolerance.

In 1554, the Saadi family became rulers of all of Morocco. In 1578, Moroccan forces defeated a crusade led by 24-year-old King Sebastian of Portugal. Using the wealth from the ransom of European prisoners, Ahmad al-Mansur, the sixth Saadi sultan, constructed El Badi (“the marvelous”) Palace in his capital of Marrakech, modeled on the Alhambra. When finished, the palace contained 360 rooms, a massive courtyard and a pool measuring 300 feet by 60 feet. Palace rooms were decorated with marble from Italy, gold from Sudan and jade from China. Al-Mansur and later sultans used the palace to host lavish receptions for European ambassadors, showcasing Moroccan power.

Before al-Mansur died from the plague in 1603, he constructed tombs in the grand style of El Badi Palace for the royal family, their servants and government officials. The

tombs included two mausoleums, one with 12 columns, which eventually sheltered a total of 66 graves, and a garden containing more than 100 graves. In 1672, Moulay Ismail ibn Sharif claimed the title of Sultan of Morocco and displaced the Saadi dynasty. Over a 10year period, he demolished El Badi Palace.

Apparently afraid to destroy the resting places of the dead, he sealed and hid the Saadian tombs. The French rediscovered the tombs in 1917, restored them to their original grandeur and opened them to the public.

A visit to the Saadian tombs, a major Marrakech attraction near the Kasbah Mosque, conveys the style and elegance of El Badi Palace. A few of the grave markers, both in one mausoleum and in the garden, are oriented in an east-west direction, perpendicular to the remainder. They mark the graves of Jewish members of the royal staff.
