Hunn teens remembered at ZCHS football game

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Harrison and Shelby Hunn, two teens who were purportedly murdered by their father in his home Sept. 21, were remembered during Zionsville High School’s MEMORIAL Sept. 28 home football game Brownsburg.

Students, staff and fans were encouraged to wear blue in honor of the slain teens.

Many showed up in blue, including almost the entire Brownsburg section. The varsity cheerleaders had blue pompoms.

The community has been reeling from the teens’ deaths and searching for ways to support their mother, Stephanie Reece.

Harrison and Shelby were both tennis players, and Reece is the ZCHS girls coach and is a coach at Pearson Automotive Tennis Center in Zionsville. Junior Lauren Campbell had Reece as a private coach the past two years and plays for her at ZCHS. “When it came on over the announcements at school, it hit so hard,” Campbell said. “I was

ZCHS had grief counselors speak with students and follow up the next week.

Campbell said the tennis team was searching for a way to help. She and teammate Frannie Pittman designed T-shirts honoring Harrison and Shelby to sell at the high school.

Proceeds from each $20 shirt goes directly to Reece. That weekend, Campbell and Pittman ordered 400 in different sizes.

game,” Campbell said.

When the shirts sold out, Cambell and Pittman had sign-up sheets to keep track of nearly 200 additional orders.

Campbell said Reece may be taking a break but she wants to get back to coaching.

“She told me that’s the only thing that will feel normal for her,” Campbell said. “She’s surrounded by friends and family right now and I really think she’s doing the best she can.

She’s the strongest lady I know. ”

What happened: The Zionsville Town Council voted to rezone 14.5 acres at 779 Lennox Ct. from an urban business district to multi-family zoning. The ordinance came with a unanimous favorable recommendation from the Zionsville Plan Commission.

What it means: The property, near 106th Street and U.S. 421, was once destined for a Walmart.

After a 10-year battle with the Town of Zionsville, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. decided to sell the property in 2017. Archview Properties LLC purchased the property and proposed a 218-unit apartment complex. The rezoning will allow Archview to construct apartment buildings featuring a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

What’s next: With the rezoning passed, Archview’s additional plans for development will come before the Plan Commission.

What happened: Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro introduced the 2019 Budget for the Town of Zionsville.

What it means: Mitro presented highlights from the proposed budget. A greater emphasis will be placed on the town’s streets and parks. The town’s I.T. department and the Zionsville Planning and Economic Development Dept. will be restructured in 2019. He noted healthy financials, saying the budget is fully funded by Zionsville’s tax income and reserves, though only two areas would require the use of reserve money. “We will always have challenges as we continue to grow, but we are in great shape,” Mitro said. He also noted that Mayor Tim Haak, who has earned $120,000 since 2016, asked not to take a raise again this year.

What’s next: The final reading for the budget will be heard Oct. 22.

What happened: The council voted unanimously to adopt the Boone County All-Hazard Mitigation Plan.

What it means: Rachel Hanson of Boone County Emergency Management explained that the adoption of the All-Hazard Mitigation Plan was necessary in order to receive funding from FEMA for natural disaster recovery. The act identifies risks and establishes a plan to prepare the town for blizzards, floods and tornadoes.

ZIONSVILLE The repair and resurfacing of CONSTRUCTION Oak Street from Quail Run Drive to CR 950 East/Sheets Road was scheduled to begin on Oct. 4 and will continue for two to three weeks.

CARMEL West 96th Street is closed west of Ditch Road for a stormwater culvert project. This project will last through the end of the year.

WESTFIELD The Towne Road Improvement Project has begun, and Towne Road is closed to through traffic from 156th Street to 161st Street. The project should be finished this month. Three box culverts will be replaced and new ditches will be cut to facilitate better roadside drainage. Each travel lane will be widened by 2 feet, and grade adjustments along the road will improve line of sight.

DISPATCHES Humane Society awarded $25K — The Humane Society for Hamilton County has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust for their efforts in saving animals from Marion County who are the hardest-to-save and place in a forever home. Norton talks housing

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton spoke at Noblesville-based Housing and Neighborhood Development’s HAND fourth annual suburban housing conference Sept. 21 at the Cambria Hotel in Westfield.

Last month, HAND Inc. invested more than $2 million to acquire and renovate 17 duplexes in Lebanon, which it will maintain as affordable apartments for low-income residents. The acquisition was its first outside of Hamilton County.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness also spoke at the conference, noting issues with retaining workers due to the cost of living in Fishers. Fadness said an integrated housing policy is necessary for the long-term sustainability of a community.

Norton discussed similar issues in Whitestown, where the population was 514 in 1995. In 2018, Norton said the population has risen to 9,700 people.

“We’ve developed on the backs of industry that cannot find workers in the community where their industry is built,” Norton said. “It’s crazy.”

the infrastructure for a bus line to shuttle workers from Marion County to Boone County, but now Marion County cannot find workers.

“We’ve given a tax abatement to said company (for) millions of dollars,” Norton said.

Norton discussed how many oppose workforce housing because of concerns about lowering home values.

“Maybe the suburban communities help Indianapolis rebuild its product,” Norton said. “A strong Indianapolis is a strong central Indiana.”

Zionsville Community High School’s bid to win its second consecutive state girls golf title might have fallen short, but the future looks bright.

The top-ranked Eagles placed second to GOLF Evansville North in the Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Golf State Finals Sept. 28-29 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. Evansville North finished with a two-day total of 605, while Zionsville shot 612. The teams were tied after the first round.

“The kids played well,” Anderson said. “They’ve been

a solid group all year. Evansville North just didn’t make any mistakes (in the final round).”

Pancake said although the scores were the same, her play was better in the final round.

“I was getting more consistent with my long game, I just didn’t make as many putts as I wanted,” she said.

“We’re excited we’ve grown this program a lot in the past two years and we hope to keep going up.”

Anderson said next year looks promising.

“We have a sophomore, Lauren Kaltenmark, that is an amazing player as well. I look for the girls to come back and have another solid run next year,” Anderson said.

Pagano to speak at Boys & Girls Club event

The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville will host the second “Be Great Breakfast” Oct. 27. The event will be at FUNDRAISER 8:30 a.m. at the West Club facility, 5964 S. 700 E. Whitestown. Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano will be the keynote speaker.

“Coach Chuck Pagano will be discussing coaching, surviving and overcoming odds,” said Katie Obremskey Reasoner, BGCZ’s resource development director. “It’s an informal sort of question and answer with a moderator format.”

The event raises funds for the club’s operating expenses.

“For every child we have at the club, it’s $50 to be a member,” Reasoner said. “The after-school program is $50 per semester and it costs us per child over $420. There is a gap of about $277 from what the kids pay

and what the actual cost is, so we have to fundraise for the gap. This is one of our major fundraisers to fill that gap.”

Club officials hope the event inspires children and adults to be high achievers. “‘Be Great’ is one of the Boys & Girls Club of America’s tag lines,” Reasoner said. “This is where you open doors to be great.”

Tickets are $75 for adults, $50 for children under 12, $125 for VIP and $1,000 per table of 10.

“If you purchase a table or a VIP ticket, you get a meet-and-greet with coach Pagano prior to the event,” Reasoner said.

Rob Schein, the club’s president, stated in a press release: “Coach Pagano has made such a positive impact in the community.

We are honored he will be part of the Be Great Breakfast. As a cancer survivor, NFL Head Coach and Zionsville resident, Coach Pagano is an inspiration to us all”.

The United Way of Central Indiana is seeking 30 high school students to participate in its Youth COMMUNITY SERVICE Leadership United Program. The program is open to high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who live in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion or Morgan counties.

“The program is a leadership and board development program for high school students that teaches them about the nonprofit system and how to serve on nonprofit boards and committees,” said Celeste Gellenbeck, Youth Leadership United coordinator.

The program begins with a retreat in January 2019 and continues with six additional Saturday sessions through May. Each Saturday session will focus on a different topic. Students learn about leadership, philanthropy, board responsibilities, community needs and team-building.

“We do a service project and then they have a day of reflection and graduation ceremony,” Gellenbeck said. “We just kind of reflect on the class and the service project,

and we invite the parents back for the last half of the day.”

At the end of the program, students are placed on a local nonprofit board.

“That’s really what sets our program apart,” Gellenbeck said.

Applicants should have a desire to learn about giving back to their community, but volunteer service is not required.

“The first question on the application is to list three of your volunteer opportunities, but we do not eliminate anyone if they don’t have volunteer experience,” Gellenbeck said.

“We have had a couple of students who this was their first step into volunteering.”

The deadline to apply is Oct. 31. Chosen participants will be notified in Decemeber.

Aiming to connect communities across Boone County and highlight OUTDOORS the Big 4 Trail, the Boone County Economic Development Corp. and Friends of Boone County Trails installed a hammock park along the Big 4 Trail.

Located in Hazelrigg Park, which is maintained by the Friends of Boone County Trails, the hammocks are approximately 5 miles west of the Sam Ralston Road trailhead in Lebanon, between Lebanon and Thorntown.

The hammock park consists of several posts secured in the ground. Open hooks allow trail-goers to attach their own hammocks. There also are three permanent hammocks donated by the Boone EDC. “We are pleased to partner with the Boone EDC to help create destination points along the Big 4 Trail,” said Dan Warkentien, president of Friends of Boone County Trails.

Megan Swain, director of community development at the Boone EDC, said her vision for the Big 4 Trail is to generate inter-local tourism. She wants to encourage people to use the trail to dine, shop and explore neighboring towns.

The concept is part of a larger placemaking effort. Since joining Boone EDC in August 2017, Swain has coordinated projects such as monarch gardens in Lebanon, Whitestown and Jamestown; community chalkboards in Zionsville and Whitestown; and the hammock project at Hazelrigg Park, all with the intent to help businesses grow

by leveraging the county’s assets.

“The goal of placemaking in Boone County is to make it the ideal place to live,” Swain said. “We want people to want to work, play and live here in Boone County. Businesses are looking for quality of life for their employees.”

Swain said she would like to install a hammock park in Zionsville but has not yet secured a spot. She is working with Amanda Vela, director of communications and community relations for the Town of Zionsville, to install hammocks by spring 2019.

Hammacher Schlemmer season Commentary by Ward Degler It’s always fun to write about quirky stuff. Like the giant ball of string war between a Minnesota farmer, whose ball of twine is 12 feet high and PLAIN TALK weighs 17,000 pounds, and a challenger in Kansas, whose ball is eight feet and 5,000 pounds and is reportedly growing rapidly.

That’s why it’s such a celebration each year when the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog arrives in the mail. The company, which began in 1848 as a New York City hardware store, takes pride in offering the unusual and extreme in marginally useful things.

This year’s offerings include three inflatable characters for your front yard. Start with a two-story black cat for $299. After Halloween you can slide into the Christmas season with a 15-foot Rudolph – also for $299 - and a giant Grinch at $399.

Another Christmas item is a “Nightmare Before Christmas” cuckoo clock for $199.

Students organize second prescription drug take-back day

From 8 a.m. to 4 PUBLIC SAFETY p.m., Zionsville Police Dept. officers were stationed in the parking lot at Jennings Field next to Zionsville Community High School, accepting unused pharmaceutical drugs from persons age 18 and over. The goal is to encourage members of the community to clean out their medicine cabinets and remove unused prescriptions, making the drugs less accessible to the general public. The officers properly dispose of the medication.

Zionsville resident and homeschool student Claire Nieshalla helped organize the first event in April, sponsored by Young Republicans and Young Democrats clubs at ZCHS, among other partners. Nieshalla said the Young Republicans have continued the effort.

“Last time, we had three or four boxes full of unused prescription drugs and it was like, ‘Wow, that’s all from our community.’

That was a big wake-up call,” Nieshalla said.

Fishers High School students held a simultaneous event. Between the two events, 47.5 pounds of prescription drugs were collected.

“The last event was the first ever (take back day) at a high school location,” Nieshalla said. “Because of that success, other schools have been interested as well. It’s

really taking off statewide, which is what we hoped.”

U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks, U.S. Senate candidate Mike Braun and State Rep. Donna Schaibley all visited the event to speak with students.

“We were able to inform them and they were able to inform us,” Nieshalla said.

Also joining the conversation was ZCHS Principal Tim East. Nieshalla said it was interesting to hear his perspective. She said she is grateful to the school, ZPD and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office for making the event possible.

“The Zionsville Police Dept. and Boone County Sheriff’s Office have been so supportive,” Nieshalla said.

The Young Republicans of Indiana aim to make the initiative a statewide effort. The next take back event will be in Carmel from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20 in the parking lot of Creekside Middle School.

High demand spurs Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding to build new facility

As executive director for Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding, Coit has found that it’s a word she uses far too often.

Organizations and riders often want to COVER STORY use the facility, but with limited space, the schedule is often full.

“We are blessed to be in this facility, don’t get me wrong,” Coit said. “We’ve been able to skimp and add some really necessary things.”

In three years, Coit will be able to say “yes” to those many requests as Morning Dove prepares to launch a comprehensive campaign to build a new facility in Whitestown.

The campaign also will create an endowment to help with operating expenses. Development Director Bailee Reynolds said she hopes half the funds will be raised through lead investors prior to publicly launching the campaign in 2019.

The new facility will be on 30 acres that is currently farmland near CR E 550 South. Located near I-65, it will be accessible easily by residents of Boone, Hamilton and Marion counties.

Morning Dove is one of a handful of Premiere Accredited Centers through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship. The new facility will cement it as one of the largest therapeutic riding facilities in the nation and will be one of few built specifically for adaptive riding programs.

The new location will have additional meeting space, more training rooms, a full outdoor arena and a heated indoor arena, allowing it to stay open longer in the winter.

Pacing the schedule

Nearly 120 students participate in each nine-week session at Morning Dove. The classes help people with disabilities learn a variety of skills by riding horses. Depending on their needs, they may increase core strength and balance; learn to follow a sequence of events; improve motor skills impulse control; and develop empathy.

Horses are ideal for therapy because their gait mimics the movement of the human pelvis, teaching human muscles to move as if they’re walking.

“When (Jay) rides a horse it’s the closest thing he gets to the feeling of walking,” said Mary Jane Perkins, whose son, Jay, is in a wheelchair.

A special harness lifts Jay from his wheelchair to mount Pete, a horse with whom he shares a solid connection and many treats.

“I like the bond between the horse and the rider,” Mary Jane said.

Jay is perfectly at ease riding. He started hippotherapy when he was 3 and moved into therapeutic riding several years ago. Hippotherapy is physical or occupational therapy approved by a physician. The absence of a physical therapist is the only difference Mary Jane Perkins has noticed

between hippotherapy and therapeutic riding. However, instructors at Morning Dove still focus on goals and trunk control for Jay. “I think the transition was pretty much seamless,” Mary Jane said.

Every Friday, the entire facility is rented by St. Vincent for hippotherapy lessons, but therapy is only one piece of Morning Dove’s offerings. Its Equine Assisted Learning programs teach a myriad of skills beyond riding a horse.

“We’re teaching them to interact with the horses in different ways to help with teamwork, self-awareness, respect, body language, that kind of thing,” Coit said. “We’re still discovering different ways to use our horses,” she said.

Addiction rehab centers, veterans programs and programs for at-risk youth are among EAL groups that participate.

“A horse is a very clear, non-verbal communicator if you look for it,” Coit said. “They also forgive very quickly.”

Horses best-suited are older, seasoned and healthy enough to be ridden. In addition, horses must be curious and enjoy activity.

A variety of horse personalities meet the many needs of riders. Children on the autism spectrum need an active horse requiring an attentive rider. By comparison, a child with cerebral palsy may require a horse with a gentle gait.

Horses too old for riding can still be part of EAL programs.

A humbling beginning

Morning Dove was established nearly 20 years ago with six riders on a Saturday afternoon. It bounced between several riding centers until 2011 when it leased an area on the Fortune family farm in Zionsville.

Through the years, Morning Dove has added office space, an insulated riding area and more spots for horses cobbled to the existing buildings on the property.

Soon after Morning Dove obtained nonprofit status, it began conducting annual fundraisers, including the Dove Ball, to help defray operational costs. This year’s Dove Ball theme, “Horseshoes and Harmonies,” will be Nov. 2 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Golf Club of Indiana in Whitestown. Howl at the Moon dueling pianos will perform.

Morning Dove hopes to raise $75,000 during the event to help maintain operations. Tickets are $125 each and are available at morningdovetrc.org.

Fighting for acceptance alongside AC

Commentary by Terry Anker Etiquette follows us everywhere.

We line up in a certain way at airports. We order our food in certain ways at restaurants. We interact with each other, in certain ways, every day. Famed heiress and arbiter of all things proper, Marjorie Merriweather Post, applied her considerable free time, and wealth, to advancing some modern standard of polite society. America, it seemed to her, had drifted from the rigid protocol of its colonial roots. While it might have been punishable by death to have turned a back to the queen, was one expected to behave the same in the presence of a senator from the newly minted United States?

As time has invariably marched on, these set-in-stone rules of social interaction have eroded. Every day as casual day is common in our offices. First names are the ubiquitous exchange of virtually every workplace. Even in the citadel of rule-making autocrats, weddingplanners have loosened the reins on their guidelines. Do we sit on the left or the right? Do we stand or sit – and when? Do we buy a gift or just hand over cash? Do we dress up or decidedly dress down?

In a world of elusive standards, can we be expected to know the wediquette?

Still, shouldn’t we find room for just a bit of politeness? With hostilities high and civility low, is there a practice, a dictate, that can guide us through these stormy seas? Perhaps knowing how long one has to respond to a formal invitation isn’t going to stop the hate and conflict surging in the world around us, but how can having a sense of reasonable expectation (on both sides of a matter) be a bad thing? We may not care about the RSVP, but they might.

Editor, Thank you for your article in the paper about (AnnCatherine Heigl). I was so disappointed to see that my sorority, Chi Omega, was listed as one of the sororities that denied AC. Pardon my appearance Commentary by Danielle Wilson My youngest recently attended her first high school dance. A big deal for her, sure, but not really for me, as her HUMOR three siblings have already navigated several dances. Which is why, on my way to the departure location for the awkward-photo session of my daughter and 27 of her besties, I didn’t think twice about the fact that I’d be rolling into a stranger’s home sporting sweaty workout gear, no makeup and a disheveled ponytail.

Surprise! About 30 parents were already there, most looking, if not ready for an evening out, certainly showered and pulled together. Apparently, this was an adult gathering, too. The introvert in me screamed, “Leave now!,” but I hadn’t even seen my child yet, let alone documented her moment for Facebook posterity.

So, I engaged in uncomfortable small talk with beautiful people I didn’t know, acutely

aware that I smelled like a damp gym sock.

Eventually, I tried to disappear into a corner, but it was no use. We had unfortunately offered to host the after-party, and as word got around that “Maddie’s mom” was here, I was sought out for “good luck” wishes, cash offerings and, of course, the my-son-is-theboyfriend, glad-we-could-finally-meet chat.

In hindsight, I clearly made rookie mistakes. I could have arrived much later, brought along Doo as my wingman, or at a minimum, slapped on some mascara. Now, I’ll forever be branded the aloof, stinky mom with ill-fitting leggings. On a positive note, my daughter looked gorgeous, and I did get the pictures to prove it.

Remembering the fixer Commentary by Dick Wolfsie We have a great fix-it guy. His name is Randy. Handy Randy has a lot to live up to. Our last handyman died HUMOR 13 years ago this month. It’s taken us that long to find a replacement for Steve. And a replacement for the missing hallway floor tile, and the bathroom faucet handle and the bulb for the refrigerator.

Here’s a memory of Steve from 2005.

When Steve comes over, we sit and chat about his kids and his grandkids. Then, he gets around to his infirmities and then his wife’s cousins who are overstaying their visit. And finally, how things are going at his regular job — which, interestingly, is just talking to people on the phone about their problems. And he’s not a therapist: He’s an acoustical engineer.

Then, it’s time for a little lunch. After about an hour, I do something rude. I ask Steve about actually fixing something.

“Steve, sorry to interrupt, but can we talk about fixing the hinge on the front door?”

I should be more careful with how I phrase things, because for the next hour that’s exactly what we do. Last week, I

learned a lot about the rich history of the door hinge, the benefits of stainless steel over iron and the evolution of the pin that allows the hinge to move freely.

But my door still didn’t close well.

“I’ll have to fix that hinge another time,” Steve said. “It’s getting late.”

“It wasn’t late when you got here six hours ago.”

“Dick, these things take time. What’s a good day for me to come back?”

“Why are you coming back? We can do what we do over the phone.”

Despite my kidding, Steve was our savior.

Steve could fix anything, except the cancer that finally took him.

After he passed, I appreciated his skill and friendship even more, and I wrote a tribute to him that I will share with you next week. As I write this, Randy is upstairs installing mirrors in our new bathrooms.

Randy has become a pal as well. That’s the kind of guy you need when you’re in a fix.

Village Dance opens new studio

The 4,500-square-foot facility, owned by GROWTH The Blvd at Anson, is approximately 1,000 square feet larger than its previous location.

It has a new layout and a garage for storage, allowing for more studio space and a larger waiting area.

Annette Pettigrew founded Village Dance Studio in 1977.

Her daughter, Traci Broman, purchased the studio from her in August 2017.

“Our focus is ballet-centered,” Broman said. “We are community-focused and family-oriented. We are well-known as a conservative studio as far as our music and costuming.”

The studio began in the Village. More than 20 years ago, Pettigrew purchased a building in west Zionsvile and named it ZSports and Dance Center. Later, the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville bought the building and renamed it the “Club West.” Village Dance Studio rented a second-floor space inside.

“Our enrollment has grown steadily over the past five to 10 years due to the growth of Whitestown and Zionsville,” Broman said, adding that the Boys & Girls Club also has grown and needed the extra space.

Classes at Village Dance Studio began Sept. 29, the day of the grand-opening celebration. Broman said the students and parents are already enjoying the extra space. The new layout features more windows and natural light as well as

Lying about money — A new study from Finder.com reveals that lying about money is the American way.

More than three-quarters of people surveyed fessed up to having committed dishonest acts for financial gain, mostly without any feelings of guilt or remorse. Civic Theatre presents Cole Porter classic ‘Anything Goes’ Oct. 12-27

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com This will be the fifth time Michael J. Lasley has been involved with “Anything Goes,” but it will be his first MUSICAL time directing.

Civic Theatre Executive Artistic Director Lasley, who will be involved with his 201st show at Civic, will direct the production of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” Oct. 12 to 27 at The Tarkington in Carmel.

“I’ve been involved with it three times at Civic and two more times at other theaters,” said Lasley, who joined Civic Theatre in 1990. “This is the first time I’ve directed it. For as popular a show as it is in community theaters and regional theaters, it was on Broadway in 1934 and then not again until 1987. Then there was production again in 2011. It’s very popular with theater-goers, but has not had a lot of revivals on Broadway.”

It was last performed in Civic’s Young Artists Program in 2013. Lasley also was involved with the 2003 production at Civic.

The musical’s songs include the title song, “I Get a Kick out of You,” and “You’re the Top.” “We’re partnering with the Great American Songbook to promote this and they are going to have a display out in the lobby because these songs are the Great American Songbook,” Lasley said. “It’s a great tie-in for everybody. With this being our 104th season, to have a big splashy show like this with a Hoosier composer is perfect for us.”

Susie Harloff, Avon, is playing nightclub singer Reno Sweeney for the second time.

She previously performed the role at Footlite Musicals in 2017 in Indianapolis.

“But this is a completely different version of the show,” Harloff said. “This storyline makes a little more sense because it is kind of an old-fashioned, crazy storyline.”

She last performed at Civic in 2013 in “Into the Woods.”

“I got to the play the Baker’s Wife in that show, which was a bucket-list role, a role I always dreamed of playing,” Harloff said. “After that, playing Reno Sweeney (at Civic) is my next bucket-list role.”

Harloff said the choreography is intense.

“I’ve been dancing for a long time and pick things up pretty quick, but I did not pick this up quick,” Harloff said. “I had to work really, really hard to get all the steps. I’m still trying to figure some things out. The level of direction is so intense.

They really try to dig deep down into the character and make you really think about who it is you are playing and not just what lines you (have).”

Juddson Updike, a Carmel resident, is performing in his first Civic show but had worked in the production area and Civic shows for younger people.

“I didn’t start in theater until I was 19,” Updike said. “I did some small stuff in Chicago. I performed for Disney for a yearand-a-half on a cruise ship, singing and dancing, working with Mickey Mouse and all that fun stuff.”

Updike is playing Billy Crocker.

“He’s a little different than I am, but he’s

a lot of fun,” Updike said. “I’m basically a stowaway on the ship, so I get to act in disguises and doing different voices. It’s a lot of fun to play because I get to be a couple of different characters.”

A behind-the-scenes look Civic Theatre will start its 2018-19 season with its “Putting it Together” program Oct. 12 for the second consecutive year.

The fundraising session starts at 5:30 p.m., prior to the 7 p.m. show.

“The idea is to ask people to pay a little more, which is actually what it costs to do this,” Lasley said. “We get about 50 percent of our income from support from individuals, government foundations, sponsors and the other half comes from box office.”

Lasley said the idea is for subscribers and individual ticket buyers to pay twice what they normally would pay as a fundraiser.

“We give them something to eat and drink, but more importantly we give them a look at the process from auditions all the way to seeing the show that night,” Lasley said. “They’ll see crews set up, they’ll be able to take tours backstage, see the actors preparing and see the scenery backstage.”

The little wine bar is at Broad Ripple Avenue and College Avenue with an open concept of exposed brick walls, exposed wood and plenty of wine bottles displayed throughout the restaurant. I started my dining experience with the pineapple tuna nachos. This gluten-free appetizer stacked a thick nugget of sesame-encrusted tuna, a chunk of pineapple, wakame and sriracha aioli atop a corn tortilla chip. The plate is sharable, with five delicately balanced nachos, but you won’t want to share after tasting.

gnocchi, which is essentially pasta made out of potatoes, so it also is gluten-free.

The plump, little dumplings were warm and doughy. If comfort had a taste, it would be gnocchi. The dish is complemented with a house-made ragú and, as its name suggests, highlights pork. There’s bacon.

There’s Italian sausage. There’s prosciutto.

There’s pork shoulder. The meal is hearty and warm, and Louie’s Wine Dive definitely doesn’t skimp on the portions. The 4-pork gnocchi comes with a serving of focaccia, which I opted to use as an edible spoon to sop up the leftover sauce. Seriously, do not let that stuff go to waste.

To top it off, I tried the beignets, which are dusted with powdered sugar and served with a side of warm rum butter. Six beignets will run you $7, and $2 of that goes to Riley Hospital for Children.

Suggested pairings: Argiano’s Non Confunditur Cabernet blend from Tuscany.

A glass is $14. It isn’t overly tannic. Fruity notes of the wine counter the savory taste of the pasta. A bottle is $52.

Fishers resident Kevin Shadle has a new twist in his latest Candlelight Theatre role.

Shadle plays PLAY Judge Joseph Holt in James Trofatter’s “The (White) House of Horrors,” Oct. 12 to 28, at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis.

Richards As Judge Advocate General of the Army, Holt was chief prosecutor in the trial of the alleged Abraham Lincoln assassination conspirators.

The play centers on Mary Surratt, who was hanged after being found guilty.

West “This role will be a bit different for me in that it is not a comedic role,” Shadle said. “I have done the Halloween show before and enjoy performing at the Presidential Harrison Site. From the actor’s perspective, it is an altogether different way to perform theater, a short vignette many times a night, for an audience that sometimes totals more than some community theater audiences.”

Noblesville resident Ann Richards is a relative newcomer to Candlelight Theatre, performing as Christmas Spider in last year’s holiday show.

“It was so much fun, playing a spider in a former U.S. president’s home,” she said.

Richards plays Francis Cleveland, wife of Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president.

“Such fun. I even get to Shadle do a little channeling (of spirits) during the play,” she said.

Geist resident Donna Wing, Candlelight Theatre’s creative director, portrays Surratt.

“The greatest challenge Wing to me is in playing a role of a woman found guilty of a crime where doubt is an element,” she said.

Noblesville resident John West is playing President James A. Garfield.

“I like this role as it is the first time I’ll be playing such a prominent person in history,” West said.

Volunteers vital to success Commentary by Jeff McDermott After 31 years as a trial lawyer, I faced a steep learning curve when I became president and CEO at the PALLADIUM Center for the Performing Arts. Having been a patron and board member, I knew we were blessed not only with talented staffers but also with an army of dedicated volunteers – “unpaid professionals” numbering nearly 300 strong who work at our three venues. I had met many of these wonderful people over the years and knew them to be welcoming and cheerful, but I did not fully appreciate all they did to support our organizations If I was going to lead and support them, I had to learn a lot more. I began by setting up approximately 20 lunches with groups of volunteers, so I could put names and faces together, ask questions and really grasp the scope of their job duties. I learned that they undergo extensive training to handle nearly any situation that arises. They also work long hours, arriving 90 minutes before each performance and leaving only after wishing all of our patrons goodnight.

To get a better sense of their responsibilities, I played “Undercover Boss” at a Pal-

ladium performance. I read the “Volunteer Manual” cover to cover and proudly donned the uniform of dark pants, white shirt and a tie. I reported to the pre-show usher meeting and received my assignments for the evening. I greeted patrons and scanned tickets in the South Lobby, then moved around the venue to assist with seating – under the watchful eye of an experienced volunteer mentor. For nearly five hours I stood, walked, smiled, welcomed and worked as a team with my fellow ushers.

I learned, among other things, that our volunteers are a wonderful source of new ideas. As our front-line ambassadors, they are uniquely positioned to identify new ways to enhance the guest experience.

Perhaps most importantly, I learned that we literally could not provide first-class hospitality to our patrons without these volunteers. For them, this is a labor of love – love of the Center and our community.

The goal was to create a space that was more functional for a family and create a design that reflected the homeowners’ personal taste.

1. The biggest change was removing the peninsula and expanding the kitchen into the dining area.

2. Relocating the fridge to the outside wall of the kitchen allowed for the addition of a large eat-in island.

3. All new cabinetry and quartz countertops were added, giving it a more modern look.

4. The fluorescent overhead light box was removed. Recessed and pendent lights were added to bring the space up to date.

5. The doorway to the laundry room was opened up, creating more space to add new cabinetry, locker-style storage and more countertop space.

Background Info: This 1970s home in the Colony Woods neighborhood of Zionsville is home to a small family. Overall, the owners loved the location but never felt like the interior of the home functioned well for them or reflected their personal taste.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The focus of this project was the kitchen.

It was very small and the design was dated. For similar reasons, the powder bath, laundry room and basement also needed updating. The home had never been updated, so everything inside was original.

Cement candles make no scents Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Think about concrete for a second, even if you weren’t already thinking about it. Do you see a GRAMMAR GUY driveway, sidewalk or building in your mind? Concrete is solid. I promise I’m not being paid by the big concrete lobby or anything.

When we talk about concrete as a noun, we think about driveways. As an adjective, concrete is anything you can experience using your five senses; it’s the opposite of abstract. Something that is abstract doesn’t exist in material form.

Today, we’re tackling abstract and concrete nouns.

Remember how a noun is a “person, place, thing or idea?” The first three are easy; they fall into the territory of “concrete” nouns. Only when we get into the “idea” category do things get dicey. Abstract nouns are things like freedom and love. You can’t buy a scented version of an abstract noun at Yankee Candle.

I suppose you could buy a candle that smelled like freshly poured concrete. Is concrete considered “cement” when it’s

wet and only becomes concrete when it hardens? These are the things that keep me up at night. You could obviously buy an apple pie or pumpkin spice candle. But you can’t bottle “wisdom” or even taste “disappointment.” Try as they might, the scent scientists at the Yankee Candle laboratory couldn’t candleize an abstract noun even if they burned the candle at both ends.

To help you remember abstract nouns, know that they fall into the following categories: feelings, states, emotions, qualities, concepts, ideas and events. I’d like to see those wax nerds try to put an abstract noun like “pessimism” into candle form.

Here are some concrete nouns you may think are abstract. Although untouchable, rainbows are concrete (you can see them).

Even though it’s invisible, noise is concrete (you can hear it). Is this starting to make sense?

One of the most famous miracles attributed to Jesus involved curing a paralyzed man unable to get into the healing waters of the Bethesda Pool. That TRAVEL once-doubted pool can now be seen in Jerusalem.

The Gospel of John reports that the Bethesda Pool was near Jerusalem’s Sheep The Children’s Museum Guild’s Haunted House Gate and was surrounded by five porticos, The Children’s Museum Guild’s Presented by suggesting a pentagonal configuration.

Because pentagonal structures were unknown in the first century and no pool had been found near the Sheep Gate, scholars once assumed the Bethesda Pool was either a literary device or inaccurately described.

In the late 19th century, archaeologists uncovered a pool structure just north of the Temple Mount. Excavations in the 1950s revealed that the pool was rectangular, divided by a stone dam into two nearly square sections. The four sides and the central dam were all topped by colonnaded porticos.

Scholars now agree that the Bethesda Pool not only existed where the Bible locates it, Curtis Honeycutt is a national award-winning, syndicated humor writer.

Archaeologists have determined that the Bethesda Pool was built in two stages, with the northern section and the dam built first to collect and store water for the Temple.

The second section, south of the dam, was built later to increase the pool’s storage capacity. When completed in the third century B.C., the two-section pool was 400 feet long, 165 feet wide and 50 feet deep, with steps leading into the water. In the fifth century, when the Bethesda Pool was not needed as a reservoir, Christians built a church atop the dam, with both sides of the church perched above the pool on arches anchored in the pool’s bottom.

Whether Jesus healed a paralyzed man at the Bethesda Pool is a matter of faith.

Whether the pool existed is not.
