ZCHS 2007 grad running for mayor in Lebanon

By Sam Elliott “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Matt Gentry, a 2007 Zionsville Community High School graduate, has been doing a lot of walking in his current hometown of Lebanon.

POLITICS The 26-year-old isn’t strapped for transportation, but is instead going door-to-door to talk to voters about their concerns for the city and introduce himself as a candidate for mayor. “I go out and knock on doors on my lunch break every day or so, and I go out in the evenings, too,�

Gentry said. “It’s the best way to hear from people about what’s on their minds. I introduce myself and ask if they have any concerns about the city or any questions for me ‌ Quite a few [want to talk], and we’ll spend between five to 20 minutes just talking about the issues facing the city and Gentry talk about what my positive plan is for the future of Lebanon.â€?

Gentry attended Zionsville schools through middle and high school after his family moved to Boone County in 2001. “We couldn’t really find a farm, so we settled in Zionsville for a while,� he said.

The family found a farm outside Lebanon the summer before Gentry’s senior year at ZCHS, and he’s been back in Lebanon since graduating from Purdue University with a degree in political science and economics. “I was appointed to a vacancy on County Council, and I was more than happy doing that until I wasn’t really pleased with the direction the city was going,� Gentry said. “I thought if I believed that, I actually needed to step up and decided to run [for mayor]. I wanted to give people a choice and offered what I was kind of thinking for the future of Lebanon. “People said, ‘Oh you’re too young. You should have waited,’ but I really think that four years from now would have been too late,� he added. “That’s why I stepped up when I did, and hopefully we’ll continue to have success here in November.�

While Gentry is much younger than his opponent — incumbent mayor Harold Lewis — and peers in politics, he noted young mayors aren’t completely unheard of. “The mayor of Frankfort was 23 when he was elected four years ago,� Gentry said. “I’m way older than he was.�

DISPATCHES Vroom bringing jobs to Whitestown – Vroom, an online pre-owned car retailer, announced plans Sept. 30 to locate its new reconditioning and fulfillment center in Whitestown, creating up to 220 new jobs by 2020. The New York-City based company will invest $13.5 million to construct and equip a 501,120-square-foot facility, housing to up to 2,500 cars at a time that will be refurbished on site. With construction beginning immediately, the company anticipates the facility will be operational in December and provide 24-hour delivery of cars to 50 million people within a 300-mile radius.

Meals on Wheels – Zionsville Meals on Wheels will hold its annual meeting from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 15 in the Town Hall Community Room, 1100 W. Oak St. All drivers and servers are encouraged to attend the meeting, which is open to the public.

Refreshments will be served.

Arc Artisans show – The Arc of Greater Boone County presents the Arc Artisans Art Show at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at Sugar Creek Art Center, 127 S. Pearl St., Thorntown. The Arc assists those with disabilities in many ways, including promoting their artwork. The event features items for sale, food, live music, raffle and more. Admission is free.

Gallagher hired at TPCA – Traders Point Christian Academy announced that Ryan Gallagher has been named the school’s chief advancement officer. Gallagher will lead efforts to expand the current high school facilities on campus and plan for expected future growth due to planned development in the surrounding area.

ZFD firefighters say yes to union

With 76 percent of PUBLIC SAFETY firefighters voting in favor of the change, the International Association of Firefighters Local 4416 is now the exclusive recognized representative of ZFD. “Zionsville firefighters are pleased with

the outcome of last week’s election and look forward to continued dialogue with decision makers to exchange ideas for a best practices approach to a growing all-hazardous response department,� said Tony Murray, president of IAFF 4416. “An affiliation with the IAFF and the state association is an investment in the career of a professional firefighter.�

Town councilors stated they were against the change because the arrangement could put stress on the relationship between the firefighters and elected officials, leading to labor nego-

tiations in the future. “While disappointed with the outcome, we are not entirely surprised as most professional fire departments in neighboring communities are represented by the IAFF union,� Town Council President Steve Mundy said. “We will continue to work with our employees to assure that we retain open communications with them and listen to their input.�

ZFD has been affiliated with the union since 2014. Firefighters may choose whether or not to join the union on an individual basis.

Solar panels to be built next to Whitestown Municipal Complex

By Mark Ambrogi “ \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ The Boone REMC Solar Community project will soon be coming to Whitestown.

There will be a field of solar panels on the grounds to the west of the ENERGY Whitestown Municipal Complex. The Whitestown Town Council approved the move this spring. The Boone REMC board approved it earlier this month. Boone REMC is an electric utility cooperative serving 10,000 members in Boone, Clinton, Hamilton, Hendricks and Montgomery counties. “It’s an effort by the town to show we are being very progressive in embracing sustainable uses of energy as well as giving our residents a chance to do so,� Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “That’s really why the project is happening. The solar panels don’t provide electricity to our building directly. It just goes into the grid.�

The Whitestown Redevelopment Commission invested $75,000 into the project from tax abatement impact fees. “That essentially will give us a 28 percent

share of the project and reduce the cost of electricity here at the building by about 40 percent,� Norton said. “That will allow residents to buy into it to get their credits as well.�

Anybody who is a Boone REMC member can purchase a share of the project.

Norton said the Municipal Complex uses 10,000 kilowatt hours per month. “I think our bill is around $1,200 per month, so that’s pretty substantial,� Norton said.

Boone REMC is in the process of selecting the vendor. “They want to get started in mid-October or early November,� Norton said. “They would like to have it done by December.�

Simulation shows hardships

This was the question the Community Foundation of Boone County posed to 60 Boone County residents Sept. 16 in an POVERTY hour-long poverty simulation.

With 6.3 percent of Boone County’s residents living in poverty, the foundation wanted to help attendees understand what it’s like to live for a month in poverty.

The simulation was broken into four 15-minute sessions that represented the four weeks in a month. Each person was assigned a family that faced one of the many hardships that compound poverty: homelessness, absent parents, joblessness and others.

Faced with these challenging circumstances, participants had to find a job, get to work, take care of bills and buy groceries, all within 15 minutes. If participants failed at these tasks, their family went hungry that week.

When the simulation started, people walked casually to get a job or to get groceries at a nearby table and they waited patiently in long lines. By the end of the simulation, people were running to get everything taken care of because they realized that no matter how hard they tried, there just wasn’t enough time.

Jim Michalke of Thorntown said that the simulation made it clear how overwhelming living in poverty can feel. “I almost would’ve preferred to be unemployed to be able to go around to take care of everything,� he said.

At the end of the simulation, the Community Foundation encouraged participants to get involved with volunteer opportunities that benefit Boone County, including the Boys and Girls Club, Indy Reads, the Head Start program and many others.

Garage sale season is here Commentary by Donna Monday At this time of year it’s too late to swim and too early to go to Brown County, but it’s perfect for garage sales.

PLAIN TALK That helps explain why half the town is selling and the other half buying from each other’s driveways.

I decided to check it out.

In Sugarbush, Debra Heffernan, a hair stylist at Body Beautiful, was styling the homefront by selling stuff she no longer needs. With four sons, ages 8 to 18, she had a lot of stuff.

“I like to get rid of things,” she said, “to re-purpose.”

So what could I do? I re-purposed Debra’s child bolster seat. What her kid has outgrown will be perfect for my granddaughter, 7-yearold Katie. This was not my plan.

Oh well...

The best buy at Debra’s? Books at 10 cents.

David Brown, owner of Brown’s Antiques on Fifth Street, was also hosting his annual garage sale. Brown’s began on Halloween, 1945, so this is the time of year he always starts anew.

“The hardest part,” said Brown, “was getting it all out, especially in the rain.” He had moved an entire driveway full of things outside-inside-outside three times.

Mike Farley dropped by and picked up a metal butterfly for his wife Martha’s birthday. I know what it cost, but I’m not telling.

The hardest part, he said, “was being able to find, stage and price everything.” The best part was what the best part always is: “Meeting people and talking to them.”

I’ve decided that’s the real charm of garage sales. It’s not the money, it’s not even the cleaning out everything. The best part is meeting each other – young, old, rich and poor – right in your own driveways.

Minnesota locals enjoy coffee shop turned newsroom Commentary by Ward Degler This time of year I find myself thinking about the New York Times. Not the newspaper, but Edna’s Grocery and Coffee Shop at the edge of the lake in Cordova, Minn.

Cordova is a wide spot on a farm road in PLAIN TALK Le Sueur County, an area better known as the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant. While there are many things that distinguish Le Sueur County in Minnesota, what with all those vegetables, about the only thing of distinction in Cordova is Edna’s Grocery and Coffee Shop.

All told, there are some dozen large farms around the lake and about another dozen smaller ones. Most of them grow green beans, corn or carrots for the Green Giant Company.

The others grow feed corn and soybeans along with some milk cows and beef cattle. No one knows why, but one of the largest operations in the area is owned by Lars Swenson and

has broken with tradition and raises nothing but pigs. Folks seldom talk about this except when the wind changes and reminds them of the hogs.

Everybody in the Cordova area usually manages to stop in at Edna’s at least once during the day to catch up on the news.

They walk in, order a cup of coffee and a slice of Edna’s Macintosh apple pie, slip into a booth and join the conversation.

No one is actually in charge of the news at Edna’s, although Edna does jot down notes of significance from time to time.

It’s more like everyone brings their own piece of the news and adds it to the mix.

It generally takes about an hour and two cups of coffee to get all the news. The place has always been known as Edna’s, but one day after a particularly newsy afternoon, someone remarked that it was “just like the New York Times.” Everyone seemed to agree, and the name stuck.

I think about Edna’s this time of year because it’s October,

and things are beginning to slow down around Cordova. All the vegetables have been harvested. Everybody’s garden has been dug up, the feed corn and soybeans are in, and the air carries the heavy smell of apples.

It’s quiet around the lake and folks show up at Edna’s a little earlier than usual, and they stay a little longer. It’s here they learn that May Carlisle’s hens stopped laying earlier than usual, and that Herb Griswald’s prized milk cow has given birth to twin calves.

Soon the lake will freeze and the men will be occupied with ice fishing. Of course, they’ll still stop in at Edna’s to take the chill off and catch on all the news that’s fit to be told.

By Heather Lusk Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ For those who enjoy a little superstition, the 13th edition of the SullivanMunce Cultural Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s walking tour of Zionsville has a black cat, a skit about omens and COVER STORY the ghost of Lincoln.

The 45-minute guided walking tour of historic homes in Zionsvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s village takes place Oct. 9 and 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with tours leaving every 15 minutes. The weekend will showcase different vignettes reenacting fact-based stories, most of which are from museum or news sources. Some are about deaths that occurred in town, others are about things that were normal at the time but may seem unusual today.

Approximately 50 performers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; most of whom are Zionsville residents â&#x20AC;&#x201D; will participate in eight skits, one dance and random scariness that should be tame enough for most ages. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not one of those really scary [events],â&#x20AC;? said Cynthia Young, SullivanMunce Cultural Center executive director. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a family friendly event, and there are early [tour] times while itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still light outside.â&#x20AC;?

Several children are participating this year, including three of the youngest ever at 5 and 6 years old. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They wanted to act and help their older sisters,â&#x20AC;? said Kelly Masoncup of two of the youngsters. Masoncup has chaired the Ghost Walk for four years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We usually have a wide range of ages,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want the community to participate.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last [year] someone spilled their popcorn because they were scared,â&#x20AC;? she said, hoping that will happen when she and some of the other children perform their poem at the beginning of their skit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gonna be pretty scary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tons of groups that are going to come, and I have to keep performing over and over again,â&#x20AC;? He will be playing the role of a traveling salesman who sells a cure-all â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wizard Oilâ&#x20AC;? filled with poisonous ingredients to unsuspecting townspeople. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so excited about the Wizard Oil,â&#x20AC;? said director Vikki Soliday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That one seemed the creepiest to me. I found that to be most intriguing because it contains a lot of factual information.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s based on true stories in the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history.â&#x20AC;?

She is returning as director after joining the Ghost Walk team last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prior to last year Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d attended one Ghost Walk,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was very creepy and inspired me to be a part. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was intriguing because everyone did such an excellent job

and made the history of this town very believable,â&#x20AC;? Soliday said.

A skit revolving around Lincoln has been included for several years, often tying into the history of Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s funeral train coming through Zionsville. Kirk Horn has portrayed Lincoln for three years and writes his own script that â&#x20AC;&#x153;incorporates new characters in the mix to keep it freshâ&#x20AC;? while simultaneously pulling from history. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Lincoln is less philosophical and more humorous and absurd,â&#x20AC;? Horn said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have more freedom to deviate from the Lincoln character we all learned about in school.â&#x20AC;?

While visitors wait for their tour they can enjoy popcorn and cider available for purchase or peruse the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special exhibit of artifacts and items related to many of the skits.

Ghost Walk is one of the top fundraising events for SullivanMunce. Young hopes to meet or exceed last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 600 guests, which was the largest Ghost Walk to date.

Some tour times are already nearing capacity. Last year a handful of visitors without reservations had to be turned away because the groups were too full. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love Ghost Walk,â&#x20AC;? Young said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It brings the community together.â&#x20AC;?

Liars never prosper

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do that! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not my fault!â&#x20AC;? is the refrain of the youngest amongst us.

Children soon mature past the instinct to shun responsibility for their actions, understanding earning trust in the long-term is far more important than avoiding the consequences of their actions today. We come to know as we mature that a scolding for playing football in the house and breaking a lamp is far less severe than growing into a young adult human who is unreliable and distrusted. With trust comes freedom â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and goodies. In the history of all new drivers, not one parent has said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Here are the keys to the car, son, please know that I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t trust you to drive it but am going to give it to you anyway. Even this juvenile mind comprehends that earning trust by carrying the responsibility of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own actions in earlier encounters leads to significant benefit as the stakes increase. Getting the keys to the family car (and a blessing

to drive it) far outweighs the debt paid for other youthful transgressions (being held to account for the broken lamp).

Yet as we age, it seems some among us become detached from this simple principle. We return to a model more like that of our toddler days â&#x20AC;&#x201C; if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t prove that I did it, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m certainly not going to admit it. True, being trustworthy is not required to get a driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license in any state. One must pass an eye exam and prove knowledge of the rules of the road; but as adults, we are only fettered by our conscience and youthfully engrained understanding that trust always outweighs the prurient pleasure of getting by with a ruse. Are there times when liars prosper and cheaters win? Sure. But does the victory last?

Sweet mercy! My teenager is most certainly weird, but I find her refreshingly awesome.

As she heads upstairs to attend to her hygiene needs, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m left pondering her interesting-ness. Like most high school freshmen, Corinne is still in a somewhat awkward physical stage. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s literally climbing past 5â&#x20AC;&#x2122;8â&#x20AC;? as I type and tends to slouch to fit in better with her shorter peers, although her daily marathon-length flag-spinning practices have her in amazing shape. Acne occasionally spots her pretty peaches-n-cream ginger-hair skin, but sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s become surprisingly dexterous with the make-up application so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not really a big deal. In many respects, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just an average girl in the burb.

What makes my 14-year-old so cool though is her quirky personality and over-the-top self-confidence. This girl can literally walk out onto a field in a space-age skin-tight black pleather body suit, dance around like a cat in front of thousands of people, and not give it a second thought. She can nail at least six different accents, including Jersey Girl, Scottish, Indian, Russian and Mamaw, and frequently will bounce between a few while whipping and nae-naeing with her siblings. She believes she looks good in everything, from oversized sweatpants to the aforementioned futuristic feline onesie, and owns her unruly red hair like nobodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business. Though a self-admitted procrastinator, Corinneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got the best grades in the house and is already thinking Yale. As a back-up school. Did I mention her chocolate buttercream? As Corinne says in her southern Mamaw drawl, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sweetheart, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to die for!â&#x20AC;?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m usually not one to brag about my kids, but with this daughter, I kind of like drawing attention to her uniqueness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hey everybody, I created that!â&#x20AC;? And sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfect. Peace out.

TV memories, Part II

1 in 4 women battle symptoms of pelvic floor disorders.

Here’s Part II of my favorite TV moments in 35 years. It seems like yesterday I was standing in front of a camera with no HUMOR clue where to look or what to say. Wait, that was yesterday.

Most embarrassed I have ever been In 1988, I had the rare opportunity to interview Cyd Charisse, a beautiful and leggy dance partner of Fred Astaire. My producer told me that Ms. Charisse was travelling the country and her tour was sponsored by Underalls – at least that’s what I thought she said. I knew Underalls was a brand of pantyhose, so this made perfect sense to me.

Ms. Charisse answered all my questions, but neglected to mention her sponsor. I decided to help her out.

“Well, Ms. Charisse, I’m sure that Underalls is very proud to have as their spokesperson a woman known for her beautiful legs.”

“I’m sure they would be, but my sponsor is Inderal, the drug I take for my crippling arthritis.”

One of my favorite moments I was interviewing a panel of young men who, as the result of motorcycle accidents, had endured traumatic head injuries. One of

the panelists, Jay, had short-term memory loss. To compensate for this, he jotted down notes throughout the interview on a mini yellow legal pad. Sitting next to Jay was another patient named John. Throughout the show I confused their names, often addressing Jay as John and vice versa. After making this mistake for the fourth time, Jay broke out in a big grin and said, “Dick, would you like to borrow my pad?”

Funniest thing my wife ever said after a show Almost 35 years ago, I did a segment in Columbus, Ohio, about couples who swing.

This wasn’t dancing. These were married folks who switched partners. When I got home, my wife told me how impressed she was with the guests.

“You were impressed?” I asked, jaw dropping.

“Yes. We can’t even find a couple to go to the movies with.”

Do you have a keepsake from your father you treasure? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Actual physical objects are no substitute for the many, many memories and experiences Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had all through the years. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m now on the wrong side of 70, so you can well understand those memories are the keepsakes.â&#x20AC;?

Is there one special memory? â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many memories of many different emotional natures as any man would have who had the privilege of having in his father in his life until that man was 54 years old, which was the age I was when he died. I wish he could have survived longer because he had been so active all of his life he rarely had time to stop and sniff the roses.â&#x20AC;?

He liked it that way, though, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t he? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was the atmosphere overhanging him and his attitude, it was very exciting. There was an old proverb about those people who work hard have a tendency to play hard. In his case, I believe what happened, and it must be acknowledged, is that he burned the candle at both ends a little too much. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad he enjoyed his life but I wish it could have been prolonged.â&#x20AC;?

The legendary singer would have been 100 on Dec. 12. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the first time, the show has gone audio-visual,â&#x20AC;? Sinatra Jr. said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have decided, along with the very famous songs he made through the years, that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also time to disclose some of the stories and some of the personality of the man himself.

We like to believe ours has a leg up only because I was around for most of the stories that are involved. Assuming the audience already knows his music, now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time they know the person.â&#x20AC;?

You put your singing career on hold and made a sacrifice to be your fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s musical director and conductor for his last several years. Was that a special time? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was something of a labor and learning experience, but it was never a sacrifice. festival regular PolkaBoy Band, as the 13-piece group will perform from 4 to 7 p.m. Airstream Betty, a new seven-piece country and rock combo band formed earlier this summer, will play from noon to 3 p.m. Another new addition to the festival, the Zionsville Drum Troupe will play its African-style and world rhythm from 3 to 4 p.m.

The festival has also added a petting zoo this year, while children can also take advantage of the pumpkin patch, games, crafts and face painting. Adults can enjoy the artisan market and German brews.

Cohenour fits in at B&B

Everybody knows â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Addams Familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; so I have some really awesome source materials,â&#x20AC;? said Cohenour, who will play Morticia in the musical version at Beef & Boards from Oct. 8 to Nov. 22. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People have been supportive. The other day the makeup artist posted a picture of my makeup he designed on Facebook for me, and it was so awesome because, people posting â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;She was born to play that part.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m almost six feet tall, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very curvy and I have really long dark hair and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very pale. I just look like Morticia, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll take it as compliment.â&#x20AC;?

The three Cs of tailgating

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley According to most ancient historians, chairs didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t become common until the 16th century. Prior to that, chairs were a symbol of â&#x20AC;&#x153;authority and luxuryâ&#x20AC;? and common people sat on stools, benches and chests. Today some tailgaters keep alive that five-century old tradition of sitting on chests (coolers) and stools (folding). The rest of us, however, have discovered the comfort of using chairs to seat tailgating friends. When it comes to selecting seats their concerns are for the three Câ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Â&#x201C; Compactness â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they have to fit in oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vehicle. Â&#x201C; Color â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for team spirit, they should be in team colors. Â&#x201C; Comfort â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they should offer a comfortable place to talk and eat.

The most compact of seats are easily the bag chairs that fold to fit into the small footprint of a narrow carry bag. These come in almost every school color and also with licensed logos for the color criterion. Bag chairs, however, sit one very low and require him or her to exert a physical effort to rise to a standing posture. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve discovered the most comfort with Captainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Deck chairs from Coleman that have a higher seat platform (17+ inches). These chairs fold and are available in most school colors. Their footprint, even when folded, is much greater than bag chairs, so space may become an issue. Be sure to have chairs for your tailgate party as a symbol of â&#x20AC;&#x153;authority and luxury!â&#x20AC;?

Here is a great bar recipe for morning tailgates or a breakfast buffet at home. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from Shirley Wilmot, a Gopher fan in Minnesota.

CINNAMON BARS Ingredients: 2 cups flour, 1 cup buttermilk,

1 1/4 cups granulated sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 egg, 1/2 cup soft margarine, 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp. baking soda, 3 Tbsp. milk, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. almond extract, 3/4 tsp. salt, 1/4 stick butter Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. Combine flour, granulated and brown sugars and margarine and mix on low heat until crumbly.

3. Press two cups of this mixture into an ungreased 9â&#x20AC;?x13â&#x20AC;? baking dish. To the rest of the mixture add the soda, cinnamon, salt, vanilla, buttermilk and egg.

Mix well and pour over packed portion, already in dish. Bake 20 min. at 350 and then cool for at least 30 min. For frosting, mix butter, milk, powdered sugar and almond extract.

The end of summer can be traumatic for those of us who think anything below 50 degrees qualifies as freezing.

EXERCISE You do have to admit though that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something crisp and clean about cool fall mornings, free of the hot and humid Indiana summer days. This weather makes for some of the best outdoor workouts all year, especially if you are including your little one.

With older kids back to school and the holidays fast approaching, it can definitely be a challenge to find the times and places to exercise.

Walking is one of the best ways to get in exercise throughout the day. After your older kids are on the bus, take 10-20 minutes out of your morning to take your little one on a walk in the stroller. Not only will it allow you to take in the fresh air and prepare for all

the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s obstacles, but it will also allow you some time to bond with your little one.

If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult to take your littlest one out for a walk due to naps, schedules, etc., then make use of your backyard. You can do walking lunges with or without your stroller/little one to work your buns and legs. Do jumping jacks for cardio and take a towel or yoga mat outside to do push-ups for your arms and planks to strengthen your core.

Doing all of these exercises 12-18 reps, three times daily will significantly improve your overall fitness level along with creating endorphins, which will make you happier!

The Brownsburg business NOW OPEN developed into a full-time pursuit quickly. Ray, president and owner, has long thought about expanding the office, but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find the right spot. In August, she found the perfect place in Zionsville.

The Payroll Department opened a remote sales office at 88 N. First Street on Sept. 29. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to over-expand ourselves to where we grow too big,â&#x20AC;? said Ray, whose Brownsburg office is at 701 N. Green St. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be here working part-time in the Zionsville area, and as this area grows our office will grow.â&#x20AC;?

The Payroll Department processes payroll for small to mid-sized businesses, both in Indiana and out of state. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a full-service payroll company,â&#x20AC;? Ray said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to process the payroll, do the taxes, pay income taxes, do W2s, the whole thing.â&#x20AC;?

Here’s a controversial idea.

What if the material surface of your patio or deck is not as OUTDOOR DESIGN important as we imagine? What if the more critical components are its shape and size, how it’s appointed, the quality of the patio furniture and landscaping that envelops it?

Our preference, of course, is to build new patios with compelling surfaces for a huge impact. Wouldn’t we all love to have a natural stone or brick paver patio or the latest and greatest decking material? Of course! Unfortunately, life, pesky budgets and bad timing sometimes get in the way and alternatives are necessary.

We call this “solutioneering.”

From drab to fab The very compelling pictured patio didn’t start out like this and most certainly was pretty stale…under a deck, dark and boring. Then the determined homeowners took

charge, got creative and created their very own incredible backyard living space.

How did they do it? A pressure washer started the process with a quick cleaning.

Brightly colored cushions on the inviting hanging swing and professionally recovered patio chairs served to brighten the area and create drama. Shade loving plants were selected for their entry pots and fresh landscaping and stone mulch furthered the objective.

That left the boring concrete patio to attack. Rip it out and spend thousands on a new brick patio? Nope. Instead, they covered the cleaned concrete with a bright floral outdoor rug, thoughtfully selected a few lively tiled ceramic tables and suddenly, the concrete patio is irrelevant.

Controversial? Nope … “solutioneering” and brilliant!

Recycling Bins With almost all homes recycling these days, it is necessary to find a place for recycling bins. The trash area may not have additional room for recycling, so specialized cabinets have been created.

Corner Drawers Almost all of us have them, those awkward drawers in the corner of the kitchen. Many of us have a lazy Susan or bigger cabinet that is difficult to use. Corner drawers are a great solution to this kitchen storage problem.

Visitors to Jordan can see what Christians have long claimed is the grave site of Moses.

From there, they can see where Muslims, for whom Moses is also an imporTRAVEL tant prophet, place his grave.

According to Deuteronomy, after Moses had led the Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years, he viewed the Promised Land from atop â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mt. Nebo,â&#x20AC;? but God would not permit him enter. He died and was buried â&#x20AC;&#x153;in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is.â&#x20AC;?

After Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in 313 A.D., Christians eager to identify Biblical sites were undeterred by the lost knowledge of Mt. Neboâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location and the statement that Moses was buried in â&#x20AC;&#x153;the valley.â&#x20AC;? Pilgrims located Mosesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tomb on a mountain peak providing a spectacular view of the Jordan Valley and built a basilica on the peak now called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Siyagha.â&#x20AC;? The church and its empty tomb became popular among pilgrims and were described in 394 by a visiting nun named Egeria. A mosaic

floor added to the church in 531 was covered when the church was rebuilt in 597. The site was eventually abandoned and forgotten.

In the 1930s, the Jordanian mountain peak claimed by early Christians to hold Mosesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tomb was excavated. Franciscans built a modern church built over the recovered mosaics of the earlier church and erected a stone honoring Moses. A sign overlooking the Jordan Valley points to important cities in Israel and Palestine. The nearest of those cities is Jericho, near where an Islamic tradition places the grave of Moses.

The Franciscan church protecting the sixth century mosaics is closed for restoration. But on a clear day, the view of Biblical cities from above provides a worthwhile mountain top experience even if the location of Mosesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tomb remains unknown.
