Elderly homeowner fatally shot in driveway

By Nick Poust “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ A Zionsville man is dead after being shot in his driveway on Sept. 28.

Police said John Clements, 82, sufCRIME fered gunshot wounds in front of his home at 685 Terrace Dr. at approximately 12:50 p.m. He died from his injuries after being transported to St.Vincent Hospital.

As of press time Sept. 30, police had few details on the suspect. Police said a neighbor called 911 and reported seeing a black male fleeing the scene in a late-model white Chevy Impala with Indiana plates. ZPD Chief Robert Knox said the suspect used a “high-caliber weapon.� “This is earth-shattering for the Zionsville community,� Knox said at a press conference. “We

assure you that the Zionsville Police Dept. is doing everything we can to bring this person to justice.�

Zionsville schools were on lockdown after the shooting.

This is the second homicide in Zionsville this year. A woman and her young son were murdered by a relative in February. Before that, Zionsville hadn’t had a homicide since 1997. “As an agency we pride ourselves on being personally invested in the safety of this community,�

ZPD Sgt. Adrian Martin said. “We are exhausting every resource, every agency humanly possible that we can fast enough on the phone, email or through radio to assist in the apprehension of this individual.�

Martin added that “hundreds� of police officers are involved in the search.

The next U.S. census is still four years away.

Because of rapid growth the past five years, Whitestown will have a WHITESTOWN special census this year.

The town is looking for 110 census workers to ensure every resident is counted. “Per federal law, a census is only done once per decade; 2010 was the last one, 2020 will be the next scheduled one,� Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “We and the other communities that are growing rapidly have requested this special census since our growth is obviously outpacing the growth of most communities in that 10-year period.�

The special census is necessary to accurately reflect growth numbers in the “fastest-growing community in the state for the last five years in a row,� Norton said.

“With our growth explosion, having accurate numbers could make our community eligible to receive an additional $1.7 million in federal and state funding between now and the next scheduled census in 2020,� Norton said. “That $1.7 million could go a long way in helping us provide services for our growing number of residents by improving infrastructure, adding walking, Norton biking paths, etc.�

The 2010 census showed Whitestown’s population at 2,893. Norton said it’s estimated the current population is about 6,700, with an anticipated population of 10,000 to 12,000 by the 2020 census. “Our engineers have come to that estimate based on our recent and current growth rate, the number of permits pulled for new housing, and development plans that are in the pipeline

for new homes and neighborhoods,� Norton said.

The census workers will work 25 to 40 hours per week for two to eight weeks. Hours are flexible. The pay is up to $15 an hour. “The census workers will either physically go to or call each home in Whitestown on evenings and weekends when people are most likely to be at home to inquire about the number of people (and ages of residents) at each address,�

Norton said. “The census will literally count each person living in Whitestown.�

As long as enough applications are received, the Census Bureau plans to test applicants Oct. 4 and 5, with the goal of conducting the census in November.

A first-time pageant participant was crowned Miss Fall Festival Outstanding Teen to cap the Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival.

Zionsville Community High School junior Andi HaPAGEANT gen won the crown Sept. 18 at the Whitestown Municipal Complex.

The pageant is held a week after the Fall Festival to give the previous year’s winner the chance to reign over the event. It is part of the Ms. America organization. “I got involved in this pageant because I’ve always had a dream to do one,� Hagen said. “When I found this one and it was local, I decided to go for it.�

Her talent was a cello solo. Hagen, 16, has been playing since fourth grade. Her platform was anti-bullying. She would like to work with the Stand for the Silent organization. “I chose anti-bullying as my platform because I feel like it is an under-represented situation in schools and communities today.

I really just wanted to bring attention to it,� Hagen said. “I would love to work with Stand for the Silent. I chose them because they seem to focus on the victim’s side of bullying. I feel a lot of times we focus on stopping bullying, but we’re never concerned about the victims.�

During her reign, Hagen will participate in many events sponsored by the Lions Club. She said she will represent the community well with her leadership skills, confidence and work ethic.

She said she wants to become more involved in the community and work on her public speaking skills. She will compete in the Ms. Indiana Outstanding Teen competition in Zionsville in June.

GhostWalk to haunt Main Street

By Heather Lusk “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ For the first time, ghosts and ghouls will haunt the area around Main Street during the 14th edition of the GhostFUNDRAISER Walk, benefiting the SullivanMunce Cultural Center. “Main Street is, I think, our claim to fame,�

SullivanMunce Cultural Center Executive Director Cynthia Young said. “We just want to celebrate the history of Zionsville where it all started.�

Seven scenes will depict moments in Zionsville’s history with a focus on historic figures who visited Zionsville, such as Abraham Lincoln and Susan B. Anthony. More than 110 volunteers will assist in the production.

The 45-minute guided walking tour usually takes visitors through the residential section of the Village, but organizers decided to stay on Main Street this year to celebrate the state’s bicentennial.

Kelly Masoncup, who has organized the GhostWalk five times, keeps track of all of the past skits that have been performed to ensure the tour stays fresh each year. Some subjects that are repeated, such as a skit about Zionsville’s rogue monkey, are presented in different ways or with new information. “It brings together the history of Zionsville in a fun and important way,� Masoncup said.

Programs tie to Vonnegut book

By Heather Lusk “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ From jazz to UFOs, the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library will host six programs centered LIBRARY around Indiana native Kurt Vonnegut and his book, “Slaughterhouse-Five,� tying into the state’s bicentennial.

The book was chosen as part of the annual United Vonnegut We Read program to be read simultaneously by Zionsville, Lebanon and Thorntown libraries this fall.

Orton Ortwein, assistant department head for adult programming, said the “UFOs in Indiana� program is a first for the library. “We’ve never done a supernatural program before,� said Ortwein, noting that Billy Pilgrim, the main character in “Slaughterhouse-Five,� believes he was kidnapped by a strange alien race.

Other programs include: “ A jazz concert to kick off the programs held at the library from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5 with the Charlie Ballantine Trio performing in the non-fiction section. “The vaulted ceiling is perfect for music,� said Ortwein, adding that Vonnegut was a huge jazz fan. “ Chris LaFave, curator of the recently renovated Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library in downtown Indianapolis, will speak about the author’s life in the city from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18. “ A bookcase on the second floor of the library near the information desk displays several copies of “Slaughterhouse-Five,� along with other Vonnegut-related books, both by the author and about his life.

Americans are still American Commentary by Ward Degler

Let’s talk about our country the way we remember it. Back when folks were openly patriotic and proud to be PLAIN TALK Americans.

Everybody kept an eye out for their neighbors’ needs back then, helped in small ways to point the kids in the right direction so they would grow up with a sense of honesty and fair play, worked hard and gladly shared the fruits of their labors with others.

The good news is that Americans are still like that. Everyone I know is, in their hearts, fair-minded and kind, respectful and downright proud to live right here in the heartland of America.

I believe our country still bears the imprint of our Founding Fathers, courageous men and women who understood that the greatness of any nation is a bestowed gift from God. And we acknowledge that we who have inherited this gift are responsible for its future.

One place I know where this goodness is clearly evident is Rocky Ripple, a small incorporated town in the middle of Indianapolis.

The town is an island sandwiched between the canal and the White River, not far from the campus of Butler University.

Rocky Ripple was founded in 1928 as an incorporated village and continues today with its own governance. The population in the last census was 606.

In the middle of the town is Holdt Park, a lush, tree-lined green space where on the last Saturday of September every year the town sponsors an old-fashioned festival and art show.

Upwards of 100 artists and craftsmen bring their wares and set up their tents. Food vendors fire up their grills, and musical groups set up on the bandstand.

Folks start setting up for the festival around 7 a.m., and visitors begin arriving around 10 a.m.. Promptly at 11 a.m., someone mounts the bandstand, takes the microphone and sings our national anthem. There’s a hush then as the crowd stops and everyone stands with their hand over their heart.

There’s no political reason for this. It’s just Americans being American.

Boone County sheriff seeks tax increase to boost staffing, public safety

Since 2010, its population has grown 12 percent, and continued COVER STORY growth is forecasted in the coming years. Many of its schools are bursting at the seams, and businesses of all sizes have relocated or recently opened in the area.

One thing that hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed, however, is staffing levels in the Boone County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office. Despite having thousands more people to protect, the sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t grown since 2004.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how Sheriff Mike Nielsen, a Republican who has described himself as â&#x20AC;&#x153;adamantly opposed to any type of tax implementation,â&#x20AC;? found himself in an unlikely position less than two years after taking office: traveling the county touting the need for a tax increase. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Boone County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office can no longer sit back and only provide mediocre services at best because of our serious lack of staffing in many divisions,â&#x20AC;? Nielsen stated in an open letter to Boone County residents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I personally decided last year after the budget hearings that we needed to partner with the County Council and provide the County Council an option for increasing revenues. We needed to be part of the solution instead of the problem.â&#x20AC;?

The sheriff has put together a five-year strategic plan based on the adoption of a local income tax or LIT. State law allows counties to implement a LIT to be used for public safety, economic development, certified shares or property tax relief. Forty-seven Indiana counties use income taxes for public safety, with rates ranging from .05 percent in Wells County to .25 percent, the maximum rate allowed until this year, in many others.

of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population must approve it.

On Sept. 13, the Boone County Council voted in support of the tax at a rate of .5 percent of adjusted gross income, which means only the Zionsville Town Council or Lebanon City Council must approve the tax for it to go into effect Jan. 1.

Elected officials from all Boone County municipalities will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at Lebanon High School to vote on the tax.

If adopted, a Boone County resident making $80,000 a year can expect to pay approximately $400 more in taxes annually. The county would move from having the 71st lowest tax rate in the state to approximately the 50th lowest rate, placing it among the middle of Indianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 92 counties.

Boone County residents have expressed a wide range of opinions on the proposed tax in recent weeks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for the good of the public,â&#x20AC;? Bret Lee of Lebanon said after a Sept. 8 public meeting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know any other way that they could generate (funding) if they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pass this.â&#x20AC;?

Town Council meeting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I expect our public servants to properly budget, and if that means you have to readjust something then it should be readjusted,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do not understand why the first way to relieve what sounds like years of budget short-

falls is to tax an extra tax.â&#x20AC;?

Officials across Boone County have blamed property tax caps, which voters elected to add to the Indiana Constitution in 2010, for stifling funds for public safety. Since 2010, Indiana municipalities have lost out on nearly $1.6 billion in funds because of tax caps, according to the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.

Matthew Greller, IACT executive director, said municipalities across the state are feeling the impact of the tax caps to one degree or another. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forced units of government to work more closely to find efficiencies and cost savings, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also caused things to go by the wayside in terms of infrastructure and things of that nature,â&#x20AC;? Greller said.

Despite the outcome of the vote on the LIT, Nielsen foresees a difficult road ahead. He points to a sharp increase in heroin use in recent years and a rise in violent crime â&#x20AC;&#x153;overflowing into Boone Countyâ&#x20AC;? from neighboring counties as issues local law enforcement will have to address, no matter what. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office simply has to change the way we are doing business today,â&#x20AC;?

Nielsen stated in his open letter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have to provide each employee with the best tools, manpower and technology to perform their duties to the best of their ability. We simply can do much better than we are today.â&#x20AC;?

If the LIT is approved, the county and each city or town in Boone County will receive a portion of the funds to use for public safety. And each entity has its own plan for spending it.

In Zionsville, Police Chief Robert Knox and Fire Chief James VanGorder have expressed strong support for the new tax, which is expected to generate nearly $4 million in additional revenue for the town within a year.

The Zionsville Fire Dept. has seen a 23 percent increase in calls in the past three years, but its staffing levels havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t grown with the population or workload.

VanGorder said ZFD is constantly three firefighters short at each of its stations.

The department is so short staffed that it has instituted mandatory overtime 15 to 20 times a year for each firefighter just to maintain minimum staffing levels, and vacations must be scheduled a year in advance.

VanGorder said firefighters expressed â&#x20AC;&#x153;unhappiness with the inability to take time offâ&#x20AC;? during labor management meetings in 2015. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The problem here in Zionsville is we are short-staffed every day, so there is little to no chance to use this earned time,â&#x20AC;?

VanGorder said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am concerned about workplace morale. The highly skilled personnel should be able to have the same staffing levels as our neighbors.â&#x20AC;?

ZFD Lt. Steve Hayes, Zionsville District vice president of the Hamilton County Professional Fire Fighters Local 4416, said firefighters were required to work on days off for emergency callbacks 16 times in 2014 and 2015. So far this year, they have been required to do so eight times for emergency callbacks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many times that phone call comes with very little notice,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do think this situation affects morale.â&#x20AC;?

Staffing levels also affect ZFDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s abilities to do its job efficiently. The NFPA 1710 outlines minimum criteria for fire departments to work effectively and efficiently, which includes four firefighters on a fire engine â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one more than Zionsville can staff. NIST reports show that it takes a three-person crew about 33 percent longer to complete tasks at the scene of a fire, which can make a big difference in how much of a home is damaged or lost. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m frequently asked what keeps me up at night,â&#x20AC;? VanGorder told the town council Sept. 6. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my staff, knowing that every day we send them out there to do their job short-handed.â&#x20AC;?

Commentary by Peter Funt Before taking his seat at Monday nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presidential debate, Lester Holt confided to the audience in the hall that his knees were shaking. Ninety minutes later, shaky would be an overly kind way to describe Holtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance as moderator. Putting aside any judgment of which candidate fared better, or how the event might affect votersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; opinions, Holt faced one of the most difficult tasks in modern journalism and came up short. Holt asked 14 questions (plus a few interjections and short follow-ups). Of those, seven were generic, policy-based inquiries, asked of both candidates. Six were specifically directed at Donald Trump, regarding things he has said and done. Only one such specific question, and a gentle one at that, was asked of Hillary Clinton. Journalistically, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not even close to the standard trashed regularly

by Fox News: fair and balanced. How the respected anchorman managed to fumble as he did is not particularly mysterious. Following sharp criticism of his NBC colleague Matt Lauer in the so-called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Commander-inChiefâ&#x20AC;? one-on-one, where Lauer challenged Clinton repeatedly while allowing Trump to get away with distortions, The next event uses a â&#x20AC;&#x153;town hallâ&#x20AC;? format, with two moderators, so it is likely that prospects for a real debate are dim. This time, though, the nice guy finished last.

Doormats and doorbells

â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have let yourself become such a doormat,â&#x20AC;? someone once proclaimed. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let people take advantage is likely what was intended. Certainly the lowly doormat stands at the ready to clean the feet of arriving visitors and family members alike. It catches the mud and grime of street life and prepares the entrant for a cleaner and more orderly transition to sanctum sanctorum.

Among higher order devices that greet us at the front door is the doorbell, glowing as a beacon ever ready to proclaim a visitor crying out with melodious chime heralding that a traveler has arrived upon our threshold. One could imagine that the porchlight, mat and stoop must see the doorbell as the most admired.

Like doormats and doorbells, our society tends to praise those among us who are shiny and whose tone is presently the most fair. Contemporaneously, we ignore or decry the many contributions of those who serve quietly, consistently and with little fanfare.

Each day they present themselves to provide for all, foreign visitor and domestic resident alike. They stand at the ready to meet each challenge with elegant simplicity and lack of complication.

While both devices adorn the passage into our homes, which is indispensable?

Which serves the greater purpose? The doorbell can be substituted with any number of methods to accomplish its intended purpose. Simply rapping oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knuckles against the door could work. Every child knows that knock, knock is followed by whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s there?

Perhaps a visitor could call or text. But without the mat, the line between in and out is blurred. The dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s debris gushes in. Arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we better off with a few more doormats and a few less doorbells? But, can our egos take the realization?

Every so often I get the chance to play Supermom. Inevitably, it happens when my husband Doo is MIA and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m opHUMOR erating on little to no sleep, but I always seem to come through.

This morning was one of those times. I actually saved the day twice!

My first Wonder Woman moment came at approximately 7 a.m. I had just returned from dropping my color guard daughter off for a competition when I realized she had left her undergarments behind. I texted her but received no response. Luckily I had to go right back over to get her cross country brother to his meet, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone. Boy deposited, I drove around to the front of the school, only to discover 10 identical buses about to pull out for Ohio. With no parking spots nearby, I ran a red light, ditched the car across the street, and then sprinted barefoot the 100 meters to the soon-departing caravan. It occurred to me that I was barefoot and still wearing pajamas.

Thinking only of my poor daughter having to toss rifles without a bra, I began interrogating far more pulled-together parents as to the whereabouts of â&#x20AC;&#x153;the guard bus.â&#x20AC;?

Eventually I found it, deposited the goods, and walked back to my car, feeling very Linda Carter-like, albeit less braceleted and a little more homeless looking.

The second call for help came through not more than 10 minutes after I was home.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the exact text conversation that transpired: XC son: What time are you coming to my meet?

Me: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be there for your race. Why? XC son: I may have left something.

Me: OMG. Did you forget your shoes?

XC son: Maybe.

Sweet mercy! Clearly my children will not be joining me in the League of Justice. I did manage to squeeze in a shower and actually don footwear before hopping into my notso-invisible minivan and solving the second crisis of the day. And all before 10 a.m., thank you very much.

Am I Wonder Woman? Nope. Just the occasional Supermom.

Movie madness Commentary by Dick Wolfsie If I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t gotten lost on the way to the entry exam, the people at Mensa might have made me a member. I tried a HUMOR second time, but I got a flat and I have no idea how to use the jack. Otherwise, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be in Mensa. Believe me.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get in Mensa if you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t follow movies. At home, while Mary Ellen and I watch a flick, she answers emails and does Sudoku puzzles, but still manages to understand exactly what is going on. I have to keep asking my wife if those are the good guys or the bad guys.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want my wife to think I am not watching carefully, so if I doze off and suddenly wake up. I begin laughing to show her I am paying attention. That proved to be a mistake when I fell asleep during Blazing Saddles and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize Mary Ellen had switched to a Civil War documentary.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pass some sensible bipartisan legislation that deals with the following criminal acts by movie-makers: Â&#x201C; Flashbacks â&#x20AC;&#x201C; If thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a flashback, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s have a big sign in the theater lobby that says: Flashback at 7:37 p.m. and 8:42 p.m.

confused, until my wife says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dick, that was a flashback.â&#x20AC;? Okay, now I want my money back. Â&#x201C; Dream sequences â&#x20AC;&#x201C; This is when a character either dreams or imagines something on the screen. In the old days when a person was having a dream, you got this campy music and the picture dissolved to show the actor had fallen asleep. I guess special effects are hard to do nowadays. Â&#x201C; Prequels and sequels â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Years ago while watching the first Star Wars movie, my son informed me that they made the second episode first. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On purpose?â&#x20AC;? I asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d think with 500 people on the production set, someone would say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hey, wait a second, we forgot to do Part I!â&#x20AC;?

I still go to the movie theater with my wife.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind paying $1 to get in, 25 cents for a bag of popcorn and 10 cents for a Coke.

Pete said they have had some friends call but were not eligible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a lot of people that get ruled out immediately,â&#x20AC;? Pete said.

IWS will perform â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Bicentennial of CONCERTS Statehood!â&#x20AC;? at 7 p.m. Oct. 9, at the Palladium in Carmel.

IWS will open its show with Frank Ticheliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Angels in the Architecture.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We decided to do this one as a fifth-year (anniversary) memory of the Palladium. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the first piece we ever played there at a regular concert,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said several selections from Indiana circus music composers are planned. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Indiana had several extremely important figures in circus music,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The most famous one is Fred Jewell.â&#x20AC;?

Jewell was the music director for Barnum & Bailey and Ringling Bros. circuses.

Another tribute will be to C.E. Duble, a long-time trombone player with the circus band. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll do about six or seven pieces with a narration tying them together,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said.

Conrad said the concert concludes with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fantasy Variations.â&#x20AC;? The piece is by James Barnes, a composer Conrad said the IWS has featured many times. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of our favorite composers,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said.

Ingredients: Â&#x201C; 1 cup heavy whipping cream. Â&#x201C; 2 teaspoons of finely chopped garlic. Â&#x201C; 1/3 cup finely grated parmesan cheese. Â&#x201C; 3 pats of butter. Â&#x201C; 1 cup of cooked shrimp cut into thirds. Â&#x201C; 1 cup of cooked angel hair pasta.

Directions: Put on a medium pot of water to boil. Grab a medium-sized skillet and heat it to medium heat. Add butter and let it melt but not burn or brown. The key is donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turn the heat up too high.

Add garlic â&#x20AC;&#x201D; you can add more or less based on preference â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but make sure it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t brown or burn. Burned garlic will ruin the dish and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to start over. Use a low heat and be sure to stir the garlic so it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick. The finer you chop the garlic the more itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s likely to burn, but finely chopped garlic also helps spread the flavor throughout the dish, so just keep an eye on that.

Once the garlic and butter are cooked, add the shrimp. Often people over-cook shrimp and it becomes rubbery. You just want it to turn pink. If you are worried about over-

cooking the shrimp, you can cook it separately in a pot of boiled water. You can reheat cold shrimp with a touch of water in a bowl covered with plastic wrap in the microwave but be careful reheating. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want the shrimp to turn rubbery.

Next youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll add the heavy whipping cream to the skillet. You want the cream to reduce and become thick without scalding the dairy product. Remember, medium heat and patience is the key. Stir with a wire whisk to help the sauce thicken. Add Parmesan cheese and stir while adding. (Note: if you use cheap Parmesan, it could make your dish taste too salty.)

While making the sauce, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be cooking the pasta in boiling water. Basically, follow whatever time it says on the package if you bought pre-made pasta, but generally it should be 3 to 5 minutes.

Add the fresh cooked pasta to the sauce while itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still hot and it will absorb some of the sauce before you scoop it into a bowl.Â

Shapiro’s Delicatessen, an Indianapolis-area business since 1905, has reached an agreement to license its dining experience and name in Ohio. The first location will be in Blue Ash, Ohio, a northeast suburb of Cincinnati. The restaurant will be a combination of the flagship restaurant in downtown Indianapolis and its casual Twisted Tradition concept. The model will feature the most popular items and updated sandwiches and other dishes from the Twisted Tradition Shapiro concept, along with Shapiro’s traditional favorites.

A catering department will serve events and group business lunches.

Shapiro’s-Blue Ash is expected to open in the first quarter of 2017.

“Shapiro’s is creating a casual restaurant to meet the growing demand for fresh food prepared with local ingredients that caters to the business lunch crowd as well as families looking for a great meal,” stated Carmel resident Brian Shapiro, fourth-generation president of Shapiro’s, in a press release. “The new restaurant reinforces Shapiro’s commitment to serving the Blue Ash metropolitan area with highquality, delicious Kosher-style food for which we are famous.”

As enlightened tailgaters, we need to remember that tailgating is a social event, where good, tasty food and drinks are served.

It is a social event to relax and enjoy conversation and congenial spirits. Tailgating is not an opportunity to overdo cooking and grilling.

When you see a tow-behind grill/smoker and a man feeding upwards to two dozen guests you are seeing a person that spent too much money and too much effort to accomplish something that any homemaker knows is not that hard.

When planning your tailgating menu think of using items that take very little time to prepare and grill, but still taste like food from that huge grill setup. Here are a few rules that we are repeating to allow for more tailgating fun.

Use extremely tasty pre-cooked foods that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t taste like pre-cooked.

When not using pre-cooked meats, use cuts that are simple to fix.

Prepare everything possible at home in your sterile kitchen.

ally as pictured. Or KISS and make up individual skewers of meatballs, sausage slices and veggie chunks. Pack these into a sealand-serve container and refrigerate overnight.

On game day put the skewered items in your food cooler for transport to the tailgate. Also add the package of chicken kabobs, unopened, to the cooler.

Pack the sub buns in a paper bag with other items that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to be in a cooler.

As guests arrive, place kabobs and other skewered items onto your hot grill. Drizzle olive oil onto the veggies first. Everything will be ready in about 12 to 15 minutes. Remove the skewers and strip them onto four separate paper plates. Keep the meatballs on one plate, the sausages on another, and the chicken on a third plate and the veggies on their own plate.

Serve with your favorite mustard or other appropriate sauces preferred by the guests, like pizza sauce or even a teriyaki sauce.

Startup moves into former PNC bank building

By Heather Lusk Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Pam Cooper wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t planning to move her business into a dedicated office space, but thanks to circumstance, RELOCATION she and six employees are temporarily occupying the former PNC bank building at 390 S. Main St. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just all came together,â&#x20AC;? Cooper said.

Cooper and her husband, Tom, started Boosterville in the entrepreneurial and coworking center zWORKS more than a year ago.

When another zWORKS business searching for a dedicated location didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to occupy the former bank, Cooper recognized an opportunity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They want to keep these companies in Zionsville,â&#x20AC;? Cooper said of the support she received from the town, zWORKS and the Boone County Economic Development Corp.

The town-owned property had been vacant since 2013. Cooper said the building will eventually be demolished when the property sells, but expects â&#x20AC;&#x153;weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be here for quite a while.â&#x20AC;?

Boosterville is a card-linked platform that connects merchants to cause-driven buyers.

After working on the product for three years, Cooper said the website is launched and is ready to partner with nonprofits and merchants. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We can still walk back and forth to zWORKS and see our buddies there,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Carter Building back in business

It stood empty for five years after the death of Robert Carter in 2011.

Now, the Carter Building will UPDATE have its first leased tenant.

Genesis Engineering Group recently signed a contract to occupy the top floor of the building.

The Price family purchased the property earlier this year as an investment. It plans to divide the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s space to lease but has no specific tenants in mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to make sure weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to contribute, be a good addition to the community,â&#x20AC;? said Ken Price, patriarch of the Price family.

Genesis Engineering Group provides mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for new construction and renovations. Price estimated it will occupy the building in two to three months once permits are acquired and renovations are complete to the approximately 3,800 usable square feet on the top floor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great location, and it was large,â&#x20AC;? Price said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we had the building inspected, the guy was only there a couple of hours.â&#x20AC;?

The inspector said the building was in â&#x20AC;&#x153;great shape.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be at the corner of Main and Oak streets, from an old Village perspective, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the center,â&#x20AC;? Price said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Several years ago in 2010 we were kind of looking at family estate planning. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all worked hard, but you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t earn any money in banks anymore.â&#x20AC;?

With many of the Price family members living and working in Zionsville, they concluded that real estate in the area would be a good option with both residential and commercial properties, starting with a building at 58 North Main St. One area of the Carter Building is occupied by a member of the Price family who runs its real estate and consulting businesses.

Price said there is space for two more tenants on the main floor and basement. He expects to have the entire building leased by November.

The basement, which once housed bumper cars when it was the Carter Toy Museum, â&#x20AC;&#x153;doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel like a basementâ&#x20AC;? but lacks natural light, Price said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spacious,â&#x20AC;? he added.

For example, in a great room or basement where you will need bright full light, consider recessed lights or flush mount ceiling fixtures.

In 1939, 4-year-old Lhamo DĂśndrub, born to a poor Tibetan farming family, was declared the 14th Dalai Lama and taken, along with his parents, to Lhasa, Tibetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital. Considered the reincarnation of earlier Dalai Lamas and Avalokite vara, the bodhisattva of compassion, DĂśndrub was renamed Tenzin Gyatso. At age 15, Gyatso, titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;His Holiness the Dalai Lama,â&#x20AC;? became the temporal leader of Tibet. In March 1959, during a failed revolt by Tibetans against Chinese control, the Dalai Lama and a small entourage, including his immediate family, escaped from Lhasa on foot and eventually reached extreme northeastern India. The Indian government allowed the Dalai Lama to set up a Tibetan government in exile in McLeod Ganj, a former British military town high in
