Community mourns loss of teens

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com While performing a requested welfare check, deputies from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office found 15-year-old CRIME Harrison Hunn and 13-year-old Shelby Hunn dead inside the home of their father, Michael Hunn. Both died from apparent gunshot wounds in their respective bedrooms. Michael, a 50-year-old male, also was dead from a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.

The BCSO received a call at 10:36 a.m. Sept.

21 from the children’s mother, Stephanie Reece, stating they had not made contact with her since the previous night. The children were staying at their father’s home at 515 S. 900 East in rural Zionsville.

Reece was contacted by Zionsville Community Schools when her children failed to report to school. She immediately attempted to contact the children and their father. After numerous unsuccessful attempts via cellphone, she drove to the home. When no one answered the door, she called 911 to have deputies conduct a welfare check.

BCSO deputies arrived shortly after receiving the call.

“It appears it was done overnight while (the children) were possibly sleeping,” BCSO Public Information Officer Sgt. Chris Burcham said.

Deputies secured the scene and called for additional assistance. The incident is being investigated as a double murder/suicide.

“At this time, we believe this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public,” the BCSO stated in a media release. “We all have faced yet another tragic event here in Boone County. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the family, the community, Zionsville Schools and the public safety personnel that responded.”

The Hunns were divorced in November 2017 and shared custody of the children, with Reece having majority custody. Sept. 21 was a regularly scheduled visitation for Harrison and Shelby to stay with Michael.

“We have not discovered a motive at this time,” the BCSO stated. “The investigation will be ongoing. We will continue to pray for the family in this horrible tragedy.”

In a petition filed Aug. 7, Reece advised Michael’s legal counsel that he was failing to make child support payments or share his part of the children’s extracurricular expenses, as agreed upon in a previous legal arrangement. She requested that he be held in contempt of court.

“We will dig deep to figure out exactly what occurred here,” Burcham said.

The town of Zionsville has gathered to show support for the victims and their mother.

Harrison and Shelby were both tennis players, and Stephanie is head coach of girls tennis at ZCHS. At the tennis courts where his team practices, Harrison’s friends put flowers around his team sign. A memorial also was

placed at the Zionsville Middle School tennis courts, where Shelby played.

On Sept. 22, a prayer vigil was held for Harrison and Shelby at Lions Park in Zionsville, where hundreds of people released balloons into the sky.

A visitation was held Sept. 27 at Traders Point Christian Church in Whitestown and a celebration of life followed. There were so many attendees that a long line of cars backed up on Indianapolis Rd. and slowly filtered into the church parking lot.

The support for the family did not end there. Those attending the Zionsville-Brownsburg high school football game Sept. 28 were encouraged to wear blue in honor of the slain teens.

Auschwitz survivor Eva Kor speaks at ZUMC

On Sept. 26, Auschwitz survivor Eva Mozes Kor spoke at Zionsville United Methodist Church, conveying a message INSPIRATION of forgiveness, peace and hope.

Her speech followed a similar talk earlier that day at the ZCHS Performing Arts Center, where students from seventh-grade through 12th grade gathered to hear her story.

Kor and her twin sister Miriam Mozes Zieger were subjected to human experimentation at an Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. The camp was run by Dr. Josef Mengele, a German officer and physician who performed experiments on prisoners, especially on twins. This ultimately saved the lives of Kor and her sister, though holding on to hope of rescue was hard.

“I could sense in every ounce of my existence that this could not go on much longer. That someday soon we would be freed and we could go

In 1945, Kor and her sister were rescued from Auschwitz by the Soviet Army.

“We were free, we were alive,” Kor said. “We had triumphed over evil.”

Kor, 84, travels the world giving speeches. She and Zieger founded CANDLES, Inc. in 1984 to locate other surviving Mengele twins. Kor later opened the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute in 1995 to educate the public

about eugenics, the Holocaust and the power of forgiveness.

She received international attention that same year when she met with former Nazi Dr. Hans Munch and gave him a letter of forgiveness in return for his signing a documentation of the gas chambers.

“All the pain from 50 years was lifted from my shoulders,” Kor said.

In 2017, Kor made a video publicly forgiving the Nazis for the horrific events they put her through.

“What I discovered for myself was life-changing. I had the power to forgive,” Kor said. “Every single one of you here has that same power.”

At the end of the talk, Kor allowed audience members to ask questions and then signed autographs of her book, “Surviving the Angel of Death,” in the church lobby.

She left attendees with words of encouragement.

“I need all of you to help me spread the message of forgiveness throughout the world,” she said. “Every single one of you can do something to make the world better.”

A spirited weekend

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Part ghost tales and part history lesson, the 16th edition of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center’s Ghost SULLIVANMUNCE Walk takes visitors on a walking tour of the town while sharing nuggets of Zionsville’s past.

Bits of town history are brought to life by local volunteers who recreate the scenes through nine skits placed throughout the village.

Event organizer Kelly Masoncup has written many of the scripts through the years, including most of those for this year’s Ghost Walk. She occasionally incorporates local legends into stories, but often the skits are inspired by a list of town mysteries from Zionsville newspapers.

“I go through and figure out whether it would make a good story or not,” Masoncup said.

This year, one skit will quote directly from a yearbook.

“We’re taking the words of past residents,” Masoncup said.

humorous. Some of this year’s skits center on the plague, a movie theater and a mysterious suitcase left on a train.

Apple cider will be sold before and after the tour, and a fortune teller will add to the atmosphere each evening at the museum.

The Ghost Walk is Oct. 5-6 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tours leave every 15 minutes from the SullivanMunce at 225 Hawthorne St. Adult advance tickets are $12 for members and $14 for non-members, with a reduced rate for youth. Children 5 and under are free. Adult tickets are $20 the day of the event. Tickets may be purchased at SullivanMunce.org or by contacting the SullivanMunce Cultural Center.

With a new twist on an age-old tradition, members of Christ Lutheran Church of Zionsville hosted a Pop-up Charity Market where the proceeds benefited local charities Boone County Caring Center, Habitat for Humanity, Lutheran Disaster Response and Lutheran Child & Family Services.

Shoppers were given a piece of paper to total their items and pay at the end. Individual booth sales were tracked so the donations went to the charity designated by each vendor.

The Christ Lutheran Church congregation held the Sept. 16 market in its church parking lot. Early visits to Cracker Barrel Commentary by Ward Degler Years ago, when we headed to Florida on vacation, one of the first things we looked forward to was pulling into Murfreesboro, Tenn., a few miles east of PLAIN TALK Nashville. The two reasons for that were a restaurant and an antique mall. Both were nestled next to each other just off I-24.

The antique place occupied one gigantic building and was crammed with the trappings of American history, from Shaker furniture to 200-year-old butter churns.

The restaurant was a Cracker Barrel. We’d usually stroll among the antiques first, and then go next door to eat.

Cracker Barrel had food you couldn’t find anywhere else. My favorite was chicken and dumplings. Back then, Cracker Barrels were found only in the South. We started scanning for them as soon as we crossed the Tennessee line.

We didn’t know it at the time, but the very first Cracker Barrel was built just a few miles from Murfreesboro in Lebanon, Tenn.

It started out as a gas station attached to a general store. The owner, Dan Evins, worked for Shell Oil Company and figured he could

sell more gas if folks were enticed to stop and shop and get a bite to eat.

That was 1969, and Evins’ experiment worked so well he started building Cracker Barrel stores throughout the region. They all had gas pumps and the charms of a downhome country store. By 1980, he realized the atmosphere, merchandise and good food would draw customers by themselves, and he discontinued selling gasoline.

Today, there are 645 Cracker Barrel stores around the nation, all with the same general look, and all have six things in common: A shotgun on the wall, a stone fireplace with a deer head over it, a traffic light, an antique telephone, rocking chairs on the porch and a peg solitaire game on every table.

We don’t have to go south to find a Cracker Barrel anymore. That takes a little excitement out of our vacations. On the other hand, walking through the front door of the Cracker Barrel in our neighborhood is sort of like going on vacation itself.

Woman defends sister with Down syndrome denied by sororities

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Sororities initially began as a way to help women feel connected in predominantly male schools. For many, socalled “Greek life” can be a way to build COVER STORY friendships, become part of a smaller community within a university setting and find opportunities for leadership and service.

But some sororities have been called into question for inclusion issues. Sources such as the New York Post, USA Today and Huffington Post have reported on problematic details of racism and elitism within sororities.

The recent exclusion of a student with Down syndrome from sororities at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. has raised eyebrows across the nation.

AnnCatherine Heigl, known as AC, is a cheerleader at GMU, is in class eight hours each day, has high grades and works part-time in a preschool. AC graduated in 2017 from Zionsville Community High School, where she was a cheerleader and active in the community.

AC is the first person from Indiana to be accepted to GMU’s Mason LIFE program, open to students with intellectual disabilities. Through the program, students focus on an area of work specialty and after four years receive a certificate of completion rather than a traditional degree.

After making the school’s NCAA Division I cheerleading team, AC became the nation’s first intellectually disabled collegiate cheerleader. She then decided to go through the sorority recruitment process, known as rush, at GMU in midSeptember with encouragement from her sister, Lillie Heigl.

AC visited all eight sororities the first evening, then received invitations to return to two the next day. The following day she was told she would not receive any bids, invitations to join the chapters on campus.

“She did literally get dropped from every single one,” Lillie Heigl said.

The sororities’ exclusion of her sister has Lillie frustrated and upset. She expressed her disappointment via email to the Mason Panhellenic, the governing body of the college’s Greek organizations, when AC was rejected by all GMU sororities.

“I felt like in a world that is not made to be inclusive to people with intellectual disabilities, once again she was excluded,” Lillie wrote in the email that she later posted on Twitter. “I hope that your chapters went in with open minds when it came to talking to her. Many chapters have values like scholarship or intellectual curiosity, values that for a person with an intellectual disability might look different.”

In the email, she shared that her own college sorority experience positively impacted her and so she encouraged her sister to go through rush. A law student at Syracuse University, Lillie has added to her workload the task of figuring out why this happened and how to make it right.

The community response she created by tweeting screenshots of the email has taken over her already busy schedule. Her Twitter post has more than 1,400 retweets and 3,800 likes.

“I’m trying to balance my whole ‘angry big-sister,’ ‘investigative reporter’ and ‘PR nightmare’ with (being) a full-time law student,” Lillie Heigl said.

Several days later, GMU’s Panhellenic Executive Council delivered a statement acknowledging that AC was released but stated the selection of members is up to the individual chapters.

“As a council that promotes inclusivity, we recognize that people have been harmed by the decisions of our members, and we are committed to engaging all communities in dialogue on these issues to do better in the future,” the statement said.

“You’re going to have these conversations but what does that actually do? What’s going to change?” Lillie said. “I don’t see concrete action points, which is what I’d really like to see.”

AC refuses to speak more about her experience. Her mother, Laura Heigl, said she compartmentalizes as a way of coping.

“She just said, ‘My heart hurts, I don’t want to talk about it,’” Laura said. “We know how she feels about it.”

Laura said AC is a persistent and determined person, but despite her successes, this is a different kind of rejection.

“It feels personal. At the end of the day her question was, ‘Why does no one want me for their sister?’” Laura said.

LIFE students weren’t able to rush until last year, when the only woman who went through the experience received a bid. AC was the only LIFE student to rush this year.

Heidi Graff, director of the Mason LIFE program, said AC was among 49 students at GMU who didn’t receive bids out of a reported 288 who rushed.

The GMU sororities are Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, Pi Beta Phi, Zeta Tau Alpha, Gamma Phi Beta and Kappa Delta.

Although there’s no information about the number of students with disabilities involved in Greek organizations nationally, Shawn Eagleburger, Pi Beta Phi’s director of strategic operations and communications, said the sorority follows a non-discrimination policy and will not tolerate discrimination by its chapters.

Kristen Douglass, program manager of digital marketing for Alpha Phi, said via email, “We are saddened by the recent events at George Mason University. Our GMU chapter is committed to joining the dialog to ensure an inclusive recruitment process for all young women who seek to join the (National Panhellenic Council) system, and that students in the MasonLIFE program have the support they need should they join any NPC member organization.”

The international headquarters for the other campus sororities did not respond to messages.

Lillie is attempting to clarify whether the issue comes down to individual bias or whether national policy for each sorority might limit students in the LIFE program who are not eligible for a university degree.

“I hope the outcome, regardless, is a more inclusive environment and a larger-scale conversation for everybody about the importance of representation for people with disabilities and the value that they bring to the table,” she said.

Duke disregards what residents want

Commentary by Terry Anker We use them every day, these aphorisms. Old sayings and collective shorthand keep our conversations moving and meanings clear. Still, we so often forget from where they hail. We can use our favorite search engine to inquire as to the expression’s etymology, yet to rely blindly on a single entry can be foolish. We are required to surf from site to site seeking some intellectual satisfaction that each appearance is not a simple duplication of another.

The maxims themselves suffer from the same echo. Modern speakers will sample the words and concepts from earlier generations and co-opt them as their own, so the able-word historian will push back ever further looking for an accurate origin point. Many are found rooted in the Bible. Much of our collective literary and oratory memory commences there. But others can be directly or loosely traced to the earliest scrolls, clay tablets or hieroglyphs, leaving one to wonder if much of human thought has been consistent from our genesis.

It suggests, in part, that our thinking has been conscientiously, and unconscientiously, formed by all that we’ve heard or read – and perhaps by all that’s been heard or read by everyone that we’ve heard or read. Is the collection of human wisdom a thread rather than an evolution? Or, do we legitimately process information and ideas anew with each subsequent presentation to fresh generations?

Among the many adages with foggy attributions is an old favorite: Talk is cheap because supply exceeds demand. Perhaps it doesn’t matter who gets the acclaim as long as the concepts are urged to persist.

Hitting all the wrong notes Commentary by Danielle Wilson I learned something about myself this week, people: I am terrible at karaoke. I know! It came as a surprise HUMOR to me, too, but it turns out I only know the words to about seven songs, and anything by Cyndi Lauper is too high for my vocal range.

Granted, I have no vocal range, nor can I really sing. Usually, what I lack in talent I make up for in showmanship and pure enthusiasm. But this past Friday, while launching the new “Passing Period Karaoke” initiative in the social studies hallway where I teach (we are in a quasi-competition with science over which department is more fun), I learned even rock-solid rhythm and superb snapping can’t save someone from the embarrassment of belting out the wrong line or mumbling through a forgotten chorus as a throng of confused but highly entertained teens captures every moment

on social media.

Luckily, I wasn’t alone. Several other teachers, including younger, hipper ones, struggled to accurately sing along to Billy Joel, Neil Diamond and the Village People. We did a pretty good job with “My Girl” and the national anthem, but other than those we couldn’t find an appropriate song that everyone knew. Of course, later, as I rehashed my missed opportunity for internet fame, I came up with several that I would have nailed, including but not limited to, “Let It Go” from “Frozen,” and the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.” Also, anything from “The Sound of Music,” though Broadway doesn’t generally play well with the under-20 crowds.

Editor, I read in Current in Carmel about Duke Energy wanting to put in a substation near north Meridian in Carmel that does not conform to our standards. Duke Power is a monopoly and usually they can do whatever they want, and if you don’t like it, well, you can’t buy your power anyplace else.

This is a company that is famous for cost overruns and inept management that business classes use as a model for what socialism would look like. And can you imagine having Duke design anything for a city that didn’t look like it was built by Attila the Hun? Do you want something ugly, visible and in the color of a howitzer? Then think of Duke. Will they allow you to hide their creations behind bushes or shrubs or any decorative plants? Perish the thought.

Yes, I know their guys get up on storms and fix the wires, but that wouldn’t be necessary if they buried lines underground like every other utility does. Then those monstrous poles that kill more motorists than potholes would no longer deface our landscape. Do I think Duke will care about what we want? See above.

Paying extra lip service Commentary by Dick Wolfsie In an article I recently read, no experts are quoted. There is no scientific polling, no international study referHUMOR enced. But the people from a well-known breath mint/gum company claim the average person spends 20,000 minutes in his or her lifetime kissing. Your smooching may vary, depending on whether you attend a lot of Greek weddings or have more than 15 grandchildren.

I’m not an overly competitive person, but I do believe in keeping up with Joneses, who, by the way, are our newlywed neighbors down the street. The Fettermans next door, married 40 years, might represent a more realistic goal for me.

I’d been doing OK until now, but I’m going to increase my output, so my obit can read: “Exceeded the standard kissing time by 2,000 minutes.” When it comes to lips, I can put two and two together.

When Mary Ellen came home the other night, I gave her the customary hello smooch, but I lingered a few seconds longer in the osculation. Osculation is the scientific term for kissing. Don’t use that word during romantic encounters. It’ll have a negative

impact on your lifetime total.

My wife became instantly aware that I had breached the unwritten rule for time spent on the customary, “Hi, honey, I’m home” kiss.

“What was that all about?” she asked.

“You were lingering on my cheek. You do know it’s only Thursday?”

It’s bad enough I’m newly obsessed with maintaining a respectable record in the puckering department, but apparently a slew of other situations exist when my breath should be pristine.

Now, there’s something to chew on. Which is exactly what the gum company says: “Hey, we sell something to chew on.”

In order for my wife and me to someday surpass the national average, I’m going to need her full cooperation. Last night, I told Mary Ellen how beautiful she is and how great dinner was, but I still don’t think I have a chance of reaching that 20,000 mark.

Apparently, kissing up doesn’t count.

ZCHS Key Club hosts blood drive

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com On Sept. 11, the Key Club at Zionsville Community High School conducted its annual blood drive. The club PHILANTHROPY collected 57 units of blood, enough to help 171 people, according to Key Club Sponsor Cathy Busick.

“After the blood is donated at the high school, it goes back to the Indiana Blood

Center lab in Indianapolis, where it is tested and (transferred) into transfusable blood products needed by hospital patients. Then, it is shipped to a hospital to save lives,” said Courtney Howay, an account representative at the Indiana Blood Center.

Key Club, an extension of the Kiwanis Club, is a nonprofit dedicated to creating student leaders and serving others.

The high school’s National Honor Society chapter, also sponsored by Busick, will host another blood drive Jan. 29, 2019.

The film was screened in July at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival Presented by Heartland International Film Festival. The documentary won the Audience Choice Award presented by Indiana Spotlight.

“That’s the most prestigious award because it tells the film industry that our film was chosen by the audience,” said Executive Producer/Producer Amy Pauszek, whose Where’s Amy photo column appears in Current publications.

The film was screened at the Sept. 27-29 Circle City Film Festival.

“Jenni’s story will warm your heart while teaching us to live an engaging, productive and meaningful life,” Pauszek said.

“Grateful” also will be shown in the Indy Shorts Winners Program No. 1 at the Oct. 11-21 Heartland International Film Festival.

“We’re so excited because it’s such a prestigious festival to be in,” Pauszek said. “‘Grateful’ is a must-see film for everyone at the 2018 Heartland International Film Festival.”

Pauszek, a Geist resident, plans to submit the film to additional film festivals.

“We’ve sent it off to others and we’re hoping to get into more,” she said. “People really love it. This film will help anyone who has experienced ALS or any type of life-threatening illness. It shows there is hope, and through family and friends anybody can get through these obstacles.”

It also has locations in Greenwood and downtown Indianapolis, but the Fishers location is the first to feature a full menu. The menu is created by 5280 Bistro, a popular food truck in Fishers. I kicked off my experience by tasting the Bavarian Style Soft Pretzel paired with MashCraft’s own garlic beer cheese, or queso blanco. The pretzel was doughy, buttery, dusted with salt and, because of its size, easily shareable. For

my main course, I opted for the fish tacos: two soft corn tortillas filled with grilled and blackened whitefish with a crunchy slaw. A spicy poblano crema is drizzled on top along with a healthy serving of cilantro. Potato chips are served on the side.

The items on MashCraft Fishers’ menu are not typically found on the food truck menu, so it allows for some diversity.

Suggested pairings: For the more seasoned beer drinkers, pair the fish tacos with MashCraft’s Last Light Blood Orange IPA, which has a citrus note on the front end that pairs nicely with the fish. The citrus is balanced by the hops. For lighter beer drinks, opt for MashCraft’s Gold American Blonde Ale. It’s not as hoppy and is a refreshing beverage to pair with the meals.
