Supreme Court hears Whitestown, Zionsville arguments

Attorneys for the towns of Zionsville and Whitestown on Sept. 23 presented arguments to the Indiana Supreme Court — the lawsuit latest chapter in an ongoing land battle between the two towns over Perry Township.

Whitestown, which filed the appeal to the state’s Supreme Court as it seeks to protect its western border for future expansion, claims Zionsville and Perry Township cannot merge because they are not adjacent to one another.

“They are entirely separated by Whitestown,” Whitestown attorney Steven Unger said in his argument. “You can’t go from Zionsville to Perry Township without going through Whitestown.”

Zionsville believes it does neighbor Perry Township as a result of reorganization with Eagle Township in 2010.

ber 2014 election — with more than 90 percent of Perry Township voters on board, Zionsville’s lawyer said Wednesday.

“Before there was an election, it was very publicly proclaimed that Zionsville and Perry Township can’t reorganize,” Unger, Whitestown’s attorney, said. “It remained on the ballot because it was already too late to take it off.”

A Boone County judge ruled in Whitestown’s favor in October, but a three-judge panel in the Court of Appeals heard the case in March and returned a decision in Zionsville’s favor June 2.

Later that day, Jeff Papa was sworn in as Zionsville’s first mayor.

“Ultimately I think the law is supporting our side. It’s up to the court to decide at this point,” Zionsville attorney Mark Cranley said. “The statute doesn’t say anything about being landlocked.

That’s an argument Whitestown’s come up with, but it doesn’t really apply in the statute.”

The Indiana Supreme Court will now decide whether or not it will make a ruling in the case, but its timetable is unknown.

Despite concerns, ZPC approves Fresh Fare plans

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com After much debate, the Zionsville Plan Commission on Sept. 21 unanimously approved development plans development for the Fresh Fare by Kroger grocery store to be built on the southwest corner of Michigan Road and Sycamore Street.

Nick Churchill of Pittman Partners presented plans for the store, but commissioners expressed concern that the development had strayed from the original plan for the area, known as The Farm.

“When The Farm was brought to us back in 2013, it was described as a gateway project for the town of Zionsville,” commissioner Larry Jones said. “But when you start to compare this to the conceptual site plan provided in 2013, this has just moved to being a conventional suburban strip center.”

Jones said the original plan included buildings close to the street and a promenade in the front of the property. He said that none of this showed up in the new plan.

Commissioners also hesitated to approve the development plan because other than the 61,000-square-foot Fresh Fare, no other tenants have agreed to be part of the project.

Churchill countered that many tenants were waiting to see if the grocery store was approved before jumping onboard.

“The grocery is a positive traffic generator that helps retail tenants. It’s a huge amenity for the community and residential areas,” Churchill said. “The grocery is a catalyst that gets the whole project going.”

Churchill assured the commission that he

The cost of construction for Fresh Fare is approximately $20 million, with the store expected to open in about two years.

Pancake breakfast returns Oct. 3

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com In many towns and cities, fire departments celebrate fire prevention week. In Zionsville, October is better public safety known as fire prevention month.

The Zionsville Fire Dept. has organized several events in October to provide education about fire safety. Kicking off the month will be a pancake breakfast on Oct. 3.

“It’s a fire department tradition,” said Janice VanGorder, president of ZFD support services.

“We have done it the first Saturday of October for as long as anybody can remember.”

VanGorder said that attendance has increased every year, with 1,200 people last year bringing in approximately $6,000.

Pancake breakfasts will be served from 6 to 11 a.m. at Station 91, 100 North Ford Rd. In honor of ZFD turning 85, the 85th person to attend will get in free. Tickets cost $8.50 for adults, $4.50 for children.

The pancake breakfast isn’t ZFD’s only event to help educate the public. ZFD Lt. Scott Peters said that throughout the month of October, firefighters will travel to grade schools and teach fire safety.

interactive program where the kids are learning how to crawl out of a house if it is filled with smoke,” Peters said.

For first and second graders, the firefighters teach the kids about developing an escape plan for their house and take them to a fire trailer where they can practice what to say if they need to dial 9-1-1.

Rummage sale to raise funds for new turtle home

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com After 13 years serving Zionsville, the Zion Nature Center found it was high time to clean out its closets and nature center attic space.

Workers have done just that, and the center will sell many of its old items in a rummage sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 at the center, 690 Beech St. The sale will help raise funds for a new home for two eastern box turtles. The sale will feature children and adult books, Halloween costumes, seashells, posters, toys, educational items, furniture and plastic containers.

The turtles are currently living in what park naturalist Mindy Murdock described as a mishmash of an animal room.

“The turtles are in a really big box,” Murdock said. “It’s a nice home for them. It’s difficult for those that have little (children) to actually look in there because they have to step up on step stools. Sometimes you have to lift the little ones up. We are trying to find a way to update that to make it easier on us but kind of go with a nature look.”

So the center did research on the cost of a new custom-made home, which is designed as a hollowed out tree stump. It will be about

2 1/2 feet high so children can look over and in at the turtles. Murdock said the top will be easy to remove if a school group is in. There will be two compartments since the male and female turtles don’t get along, she said.

“It’s more user friendly for the visitors,” Murdock said. “We hope the rummage sale will

be the kickstart to it. Once we have an idea what is going to cost we are going to look for grants and look for fundraising and sponsors so next year we can get this exhibit built.”

Great Banquet a time for people of all faiths to recharge

It’s a 72-hour experience filled with 15 spiritual discussions about priorities, relationships and faith-based subjects. religion The Great Banquet, open to all denominations and held semiannually in the fall and spring at Zionsville Presbyterian Church, brings 30 to 40 people together to eat, sleep, learn, pray and sing. The event lasts from Thursday to Sunday evening on separate weekends for men and women.

“Each individual experiences something unique,” said Steve Wright, one of the community lay directors for the Great Banquet. “Each individual is impacted differently.”

Those who have previously participated may only return to serve on the team that organizes the event or may volunteer by helping with discussions, serving food or assisting in a myriad of other ways.

Randy Laffoon, also a community lay director, estimates that 4,500 people have gone through the experience at ZPC since it first began in 1992.

“We feed them spiritually and physically,” said Laffoon, who noted that the food receives high praise.

Most of the participants are from Central Indiana, but Wright said that this year will include visitors from Ohio and as far as South America.

“They’re starting a new [Great Banquet] community in Brazil,” said Laffoon, adding that ZPC has “helped start or had roots with” 20 of the 33 communities in the U.S. The main focus is “Christianity 101” according to Laffoon, “to remind people of what their priorities should be and to get them involved back in their churches.”

The men’s weekend is Oct. 1 to 4 and the women’s weekend is Oct. 8 to 11. A separate teen “Awakening” for high school students will occur in February. Registration for the upcoming events ends Sept. 30 and is available at www.zpc.org.

The roots of the Great Banquet stem from a similar Catholic program, the Cursillo, which was adapted in 1982 for a Methodist church.

The program is governed by an ecumenical board of directors and persons of all faith are encouraged to participate and volunteer. The name comes from the parable of the great banquet, in which a man invited guests to a banquet but they gave excuses not to attend.

A soggy summer leaves outdoor tasks undone Commentary by Ward Degler It was the first of May, and the deck by the pond needed a fresh coat of stain. The pond itself could use a good cleaning as well.

I noticed that another of the short-lived plain talk poplar trees I planted a few years ago had bitten the dust during the winter. I’d cut it down and turn it into firewood after staining the deck.

As I walked through the yard, I gave a quick nod to the unfinished brick patio next to the pond. I had worked on it last summer, but ran out of time. It would take no more than a day to finish. I penciled it in for later that week.

Several trees needed pruning, and the previous year I had laid out a footpath around the back of the house to connect the deck and pond with the existing patio outside the dining room.

Last on the list was the small yard on the south side of

the house. It had been neglected for two years, ever since I had torn down the tool shed that had finally collapsed. Weeds had taken over, and I had exciting plans for a new hydrangea garden.

All of these tasks would be done before Memorial Day. Easypeasy. Then I could focus on my little sailboat and get it ready for a long summer of sailing.

On my way home from the hardware store with a fresh can of deck stain, it started to sprinkle. By the time I got to the house, it was pouring. It continued to pour for the remainder of the week, the week after that and pretty much non-stop for the next six weeks.

I spent a lot of time brooding and gazing out the window.

Waves lapped at the side of the house and flotillas of leaves floated by on the breeze. A soggy Memorial Day came and went, followed by the wettest month of June on record.

I mowed when I could between squalls. There was a seaside quality to the air. Several times I heard the screeching of

seagulls. The only other sound was the rumble of distant thunder. More rain was on the way.

The rains continued into July. We donned raincoats and planted ferns at the rear of the house. A good choice. Ferns love rain.

Then one day the sun came out. Things dried up, temperatures soared and it was August.

I stained the deck, trimmed the trees and planted a few hydrangeas. I made a promise to the unfinished patio and footpath. I’d get them finished by fall, and cut down the dead tree.

I went sailing once. I promised my little boat an early start next spring.

Hit the Bricks expected to draw more young runners

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Hit the Bricks has always drawn participants of all ages, but this year organizers are expecting an influx of young runners.

The Zionsville Optimist Club’s annual race will 5K RACE return for the 33rd consecutive year Oct. 3.

The 5K race is open to all ages, with 50 to 75 runners estimated to fit into the younger categories according to Paul Caltrider, past event chairman for the Optimist Club.

Trader’s Point Christian Academy created a running club this year with the intent to participate in the race. Parent and coach Rebecca Wood modeled it after a running club at Eagle Elementary. She expects that 31 kids from their club will run with their families.

“I felt if we started them earlier running that could boost our track and cross country team,” she said. “And this is a great way for kids to become more physically fit.”

“Most of the kids have hit the 10K mark already,” she said.

The formerly five-mile race was changed to a 5K last year.

The popularity of shorter runs prompted the change.

Organizers are optimistic that nearly 300 people will register.

Fastest runners in each age bracket have traditionally been recognized, but with the increase in children participating an additional bracket for ages 10 to 14 was added, making the youngest bracket nine and younger.

“Some families join and they’ll have their pets and their kids, and they just casually walk the 5K,” Optimist Club vice president Jerry Arthur said.

Arthur estimates they have raised half a million dollars during the history of the event.

“All of the benefits go to the Zionsville youth,” Arthur said.

“It’s been traditionally our biggest event by far.”

Jog-a-Thon fundraiser to celebrate fifth year

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com For the fifth year in a row, students from every elementary school in Zionsville will spend a day running laps to raise money for their PTO. cover story The annual Jog-a-Thon, held simultaneously at each school on Sept. 30, will also introduce preschoolers to the event as several schools have added classes for children as young as 3 years old.

“It’s a great way to include them in this fitness activity,” said Tricia Benner, fundraising chair and Jog-a-Thon co-chair for Stonegate Elementary’s PTO. “We’re exposing parents to this fundraising event early on,” she said.

preschoolers won’t be able to keep up with the older students.

“They have more energy than the fourth graders,” she said.

At the other end of the spectrum, for the first time this year the fourth graders in each school will finally be able to boast that they own the entire rainbow of shirts, from the orange one assigned to every kindergartener to the blue shirt assigned to fourth graders.

“It’s cool,” said Stonegate fourth grader Madeline Kaltenmark of owning every shade of grade school shirts and whose mother has saved the shirt each year as a memento. Madeline finds Jog-a-Thon day to be exciting and fun.

Last year, the Stonegate students ran 6,364 laps, which translates to 1,591 miles. The PTO illustrated this to the students by asking them how far they thought they could go - which turned out to be from Zionsville almost to the Grand Canyon.

This year Stonegate’s fundraising leaders have promoted it as the “greatest spectacle in fundraising” and are rousing students with race car themed stickers and bulletin boards promoting the event.

Stonegate’s goal is about participation rather than which student raises the most money. The classrooms with high participation rates will win a special opportunity. One class from each grade will be able to choose a spirit day, such as pajama day, crazy hair day or backwards day. A cafeteria bulletin board with a picture of each teacher in a race car will move forward when a student brings in a donation so that they can see how close their class is to winning. “We wanted to make it visual,” said Benner.

Kerry Albin, Stonegate’s Jog-a-Thon co-chair, and Benner hope that the focus on participation rates will encourage students to bring in even a small donation. “There’s no amount that’s too small to give to help provide these things for the

school,” said Albin.

“They’re raising the money for the classroom, so they can go on field trips,” Benner said. “We try to get really specific with the kids.”

She wants them to realize that their fundraising can make a difference in the classroom and contributes to unique opportunities like shark dissection for third graders, classroom technology and unique opportunities.

There is still an incentive for the students to raise money: the class raising the highest dollar amount for the school will win the opportunity to spray the principal, vice-principal and their teacher with silly string.

Stonegate annually raises nearly $20,000 through the Jog-aThon, allowing the PTO to provide iPads to each class last year.

Benner reminded the students how their hard work was used during a lunchtime kickoff celebration.

Stonegate and other schools’ PTO also offer an electronic donation option so that family members out of town can contribute.

Students are encouraged to ask parents, family, friends and neighbors for donations - whether in a lump sum or on a per lap basis. Roughly half of the proceeds school-wide come from sponsors, the majority of which have been longtime supporters. The top tier of sponsors - Martine Dentistry, Mobi and Zionsville Pediatric Dentistry - have been with Jog-a-Thon since its inception.

A huge number of parent volunteers are needed to help count laps, distribute water bottles, assist with warm ups before the jogging begins, play music and keep the kids enthusiastic during their hour-long jog.

“We have fantastic parent volunteers that help with the event,” said Benner. “It’s fun to see the parents here encouraging the kids around the course.”

FR O M T HE BA C K SH O P Sugar rips party, won’t battle Gregg We won’t have a hometown candidate, unfortunately, competing with John Gregg for the Democratic nomination for governor.

It would have made for great copy. But according to a statement from Tom Sugar, a former aide to ex-Gov. Evan Bayh, he said the party’s powers that be didn’t really want him to challenge John Gregg for the nomination.

It seems that even had he won, there were insurmountable odds stacked against him – or any winner, really. Sugar stated our politicians are “insensitive” to Hoosier values and the problems the state faces. Now it seems Gregg will be the one to challenge incumbent Republican Gov. Mike Pence. Good luck with that. As for Sugar, let this be his closing comment: “I believe this is wrongheaded and hope to live long enough to see the day when Hoosier Democrats begin to behave like winners, confident enough to welcome new leaders, new energy and new ideas.”

••• We were mildly disappointed, but certainly not in any way surprised, to learn unionbusting Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wis.) dropped out of the Republican Party race for the nomination for the presidency. It seems Walker either was “too much too soon” for the party leadership or we were just wishfully thinking he really had a chance to make things interesting. We suspect he was advised out under the threat of having his spine removed, as was the case with so many before him.

Parachute pants and mall bangs Commentary by Terry Anker A close friend from college has become enamored with #TBT. Even a highly informed and well-read adult might wonder what is entailed in this au courant nomenclature. So please forgive the remedial lesson to those in the know, but a hashtag (#) aids in categorizing information broadcast on social media and the letters (TBT) represent Throw Back Thursday, which is the day designated for reminiscing online.

The moniker usually accompanies a photo of the person making the post from a much earlier time in their life.

The pictures generally showcase one’s poor fashion sense, challenging coiffure, or dedication to an outdated fad. It seems the more embarrassing the reminiscence, the better. One’s parachute pants, Vanilla Ice-like lightning bolt fade haircut and Macarena dance moves might all be fair game. Nostalgia with a bit of self-deprecating humor guides the intent and no harm is done.

One of my college friends has taken to blasting the occasional #TBT with my name

attached. It is all harmless enough – even good, clean fun. However, in the 30-plus years since I last woke up in a dorm room, much has changed. For example, one of our compatriots from the 1980s generation took offense at a photograph of her featuring her “towering mall bangs” hairstyle. While the very engineering of her coif was impressive, she found it resurrected painful memories of a then boyfriend who’d eventually become an ex-husband. Politely, our friend obliged in removing the photo from social media.

But the self-imposed censorship invited a quandary. Who owns our past if we all have stock in a time and place that we once shared? Besides, can we legitimately hope to erase the reality of bad hair and cheating spouses? Maybe our focus should be keeping our contemporary life in order and simply let the past pass.

Life as a working mother of four can be chaotic. Throw in a lab that still insists on the occasional indoor poo, humor a slightly ADD husband who hunts, skis and plays in two fantasy football leagues and a house that is slowly but surely decompensating, and you’ve got a recipe for Crazy Lady Casserole.

As such, I’m hoping to forestall my almost certain stint at Perpetual Peace Sanatorium by finding ways to channel my inner Zen. And not to brag, but I think I’ve actually come up with a decent plan. I’m calling it Be Calm, Stay Calm.

First up in my Serenity Now strategy is yoga. I had to quit geriatric yoga a while back to cart my kids all over God’s creation of central Indiana suburbia, but now, thanks to voodoo magic and the alignment of Jupiter and Mars, my Monday afternoons are nearly wide open. I started again last week, and though I was awkward and stiff and as unbalanced as a newborn giraffe, after one hour I actually felt relaxed. My thoughts weren’t ping-ponging around in my head per usual, and the constant stiffness in my neck had dissipated. Namaste! My first step in remaining institution-free was a resounding success.

Next on the anti-cuckoo agenda is Church.

I fell out of the Sunday mass habit over the summer, partially because my spouse isn’t Catholic but mostly because I’m lazy. I soon realized, however, that despite the hassle, I kind of like that weekly dose of ritual and reflection. I don’t always pay attention, and I sometimes leave early, but I do enjoy that hour of sitting with my children and contemplating things greater than myself. Amen!

Another notch in the Keep-It-Together belt is claimed!

Finally, on a more practical level, I’ve hired a driver. Sure he’s only had his license for five months and actually wrecked his grandfather’s car four days after acquiring said license, but he’s relatively inexpensive and extremely flexible. Woot-woot! Here’s to outsourcing chauffer services to your oldest son!

So there you have it. My three-part plan for Sane Lady Soufflé. Peace out.

I Filed for Divorce. NOW WHAT!?

Once service of the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage has been completed and your spouse has received notice that the divorce has been filed, it is often helpful for the parties to establish the “ground rules” which will govern certain aspects of their conduct during the pendency of the divorce. Issues that should be addressed are custody of the children, parenting time, possession of the marital residence, and payment of marital expenses. These issues are referred to as “provisional issues.”

If you believe that such ground rules are needed, a provisional hearing should be requested in your Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. Once you request the provisional hearing, the court will set the matter to be heard and notify each party of the hearing date. Frequently, these hearings are only scheduled from fifteen (15) to thirty (30) minutes, though there are instances in which a longer hearing is needed and that amount of time must be specifically requested. Due to these time constraints, it is often beneficial for the to parties reach an agreement on all provisional issues which is then submitted for court approval. There are a number of benefits to reaching an agreement rather than going to court, including: crafting terms of an agreement to meet your families’ needs; saving the expenses associated with preparing and attending a hearing; setting and/or maintaining an amicable relationship between the divorcing

parties, and reducing the stress and anxiety a hearing can cause.

In the event that you and your spouse cannot resolve the temporary issues, you will be required to attend the preliminary hearing. This can be a particularly important part of the divorce proceeding. Parties would be well advised to use the preliminary hearing as a forum to position arguments that will be made at the final hearing. However, it is important to realize that due to the fact that the hearings are often very short, the parties are often the only witnesses and their testimony will be limited to basic matters.

Therefore, discussing and preparing your requests with your attorney prior to the hearing is imperative. Following the preliminary hearing, the Judge will issue a provisional order that will typically remain in effect until a final hearing can be held. Often times, the order is provided at the conclusion of the hearing. After the preliminary hearing, parties will enter negotiations to reach a final settlement.

ZCHS choirs present Purdue Glee Club

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com When Purdue Varsity Glee Club makes its appearance at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center, Purdue senior Austin Rauschuber will feel right at home.

“I’m so excited to be able to come back to Zimusic onsville to sing for my senior year,” Rauschuber said. “Zionsville is a wonderful town that raised me well, and I can’t wait to be back among friends and acquaintances on the stage where I learned to love singing.”

The concert with the Purdue men’s choir will start at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the ZPAC, which is connected to Zionsville Community High School.

“My time in the choirs at Zionsville Community High School have helped prepare me for so much in my life, from my musical experiences to my professional experiences,” said Rauschuber, a tenor. “From my time in Zionsville’s choir program, I was able to learn so much about my voice and help to train myself to become a strong singer, when I had very little experience with how my own voice worked before coming into the program. The choir program also helped to train me to develop a strong work ethic and a great sense of teamwork.

In the modern collaborative work environment, it’s programs like Zionsville’s choirs that help set upcoming generations for success.”

Purdue’s Glee Cub, under the direction of William Griffel, features a versatile repertoire including gospel, vocal jazz, swing, contemporary hits, romantic ballads, classical choral selections, barbershop, folk melodies, patriotic standards, opera choruses, country and novelty tunes. The choral group utilizes small groups and talented soloists to further enhance each show.

The 90-minute show will include a combined song with Zionsville Show Choirs, Royalaires and Choralaires. Together they will sing the “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

“This is an excellent opportunity, for our students, to work with a collegiate choir,” said Deana Broge, who directs the choirs with Aaron Coates. “Our students will have a rehearsal with the Glee Club and their director, Bill Griffel, have dinner with them and then get to watch them perform.”

Broge was formerly a director of the Purduettes.

“Yes, there is a certain amount of nostalgia in hosting the Purdue Varsity Glee Club at Zionsville Community High School, but the best reason to host this fundraising concert is to have Dance! Lenape Indian Traditions – Oct. 3 from 1-2 p.m. Join members of the Lenape Tribe of Oklahoma at Conner Prairie as they bring their colorful dress, culture and dance traditions to life.

Julie Tiller, who was president of Zionsville Show Choirs Inc. last year and the parent of a Royalaires member, said the money raised is going to help with costumes and travel for their competition season.

“It’s not only serving as an educational opportunity to show our kids what they can do in college to keep their interest alive, it’s providing the community with a wonderful evening of entertainment,” Tiller said. “And it’s helping raise funds for our current show choir program.”

Community invited to church Oktoberfest

It’s a church Oktoberfest event for the whole community, especially if you like classic German beer, food and a charitable cause.

The St. Alphonsus Oktoberfest, presented by the event local Knights of Columbus Council 12510, will swing a stein into festivities Oct. 6 at the St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church.

“It’s like putting on a dinner and concert for one night only for 600 people,” event organizer Andrew Auersch said. “You start from nothing and have to figure it all out and put it up as you go.”

Auersch All proceeds from the event go to support the Zionsville Food Pantry, The Caring Center and other Knights of Columbus charities.

Events include a “stein holding” competition, forcing contestants to hold a 32 ounce stein filled with beer straight out from their body. The contestant that can hold it the longest without spilling will receive a $50 gift card. This all, of course, goes without mentioning the raffle or yodeling competition.

“We wanted to create a true community event for the Zionsville community and beyond,” Auersch said. “This isn’t just an insular church event. We want to get the community to come to us and have a good time.”

St. Alphonsus raised $17,000 at their event last year, and expects a surge of up to 100 additional attendees this year, Auersch said.

“Our goal is to help those in need in our community. Doesn’t have to be churchgoers or Catholics, just people in need,” Auersch said. “It’s a very gratifying thing to do.”

The St. Alphonsus Oktoberfest event is $5 per adult over the age of 21 and begins at 6 p.m. at 1870 West Oak St. For more information, go to ZionsvilleCatholic.com.

Warm up with simple soup Commentary by Ceci Martinez My family and I are looking forward to the beautiful fall and winter season with cooler and crisp temperatures, which brings the not so much fun part of winter - the sneezing and sniffling, the flu season! There is nothing like chicken broth, good for the body and soul, but another secret weapon is garlic soup! This is a healthy, potent and preventive way to fight colds. A great story about one of my favorite authors Leo Buscaglia was that his mother made him wear garlic around his neck! (we are not going to that extreme). Note: Fresh garlic is well known for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antifungal agent that can help treat symptoms of cold and flu. You can add this variation to the soup: garlic rubbed croutons, potato cubes, whisk with a beaten egg or chopped kale.

GARLIC BROTH Time: 20 minutes / Makes: 5 cups Ingredients: • 5 cups of water • big head of fresh garlic, (about 15 medium cloves) • 8 sage leaves • 2 bay leaves • 2 thymes sprigs • 3 parsley branches

• Salt and freshly ground pepper • Pinch of cayenne (optional) Directions: Put 5 cups of water in a heavy pot over high heat. Separate the garlic cloves, peel them and add them along with the herbs and salt.

Bring to a boil and cook, covered, for 20 minutes, remove herbs, leaving garlic cloves if you wish. Taste for salt, season with pepper, and add 1 or 2 teaspoons olive oil to the pot.

Bishops to cover six decades of hits

“It might actually work out that Music I work New Year’s Eve and get to hang out with my wife and kids, too,” said Bishop, a Carmel resident who lives near the Center for the Performing Arts.

The Bishops will appear at the New Year Eve’s Party from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Palladium.

“We play current and classic hits from the last six decades,” said Bishop, who serves as the band’s general manager. “We cover many styles and genres. We look forward to a lot of dancing, a lot of smiles and a lot of fun.”

The song list ranges from Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” to Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel.”

“It’s all upbeat,” Bishop said.

Bishop and Georgette Fraction are the lead singers of the six-member band. Other members include Scott Carroll, R.J. Johnson, Matt Ley and John Marque. Bishop said all live in the Indianapolis area.

“This particular lineup has been together for going on five years,” Bishop said. “I’ve had the band together in central Indiana for over 13 years.”

Bishop said the Palladium appearance will be good exposure for those that haven’t seen the band before.

Coolers: Shape, size, efficiency

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Even though homemade (tailgater-engineered) ice chests were used as far back as man was able to cut blocks of ice, the official birth of the modern cooler was in the 1950s. In 1954, Coleman Company offered a galvanized cooler and after that, began to offer ice chests with foam insulated plastic liners. With improvements over time we now have a Coleman cooler that keeps ice for five days in 90-degree heat, honest! They also make stackers (coolers) which have square corners and fit easily into a vehicle without wasting space.

Our rules for coolers: • Load coolers with items already cold.

• Use plenty of ice.

• Food safety requires separate coolers for food and beverages.

• Have coolers that are sized and shaped to fit into your vehicle.

• Try to buy coolers in team colors.

Here’s a great tailgate item to fit into your cooler for dessert. It’s a lemon drop bar that’s not too sweet and not too tart.

Ingredients: • 2 1/4 Cups all-purpose flour • 1/2+ Cup powdered sugar • 2 sticks softened butter • 4 eggs, lightly beaten • 1 1/2 Cups granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon finely shredded lemon zest • 1/2 Cup fresh squeezed lemon juice • 10 crushed lemon drops Preparation: On the day before, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl stir together 2 cups flour and 1/2 cup powdered sugar; then add the butter and beat with a hand mixer on medium/low speed until the mixture clings together. Press this mixture evenly into

a 9 1/4 x 13 1/4 baking dish and bake in the oven until lightly browned (approximately 25 minutes).

Combine the eggs, granulated sugar and lemon juice. Whisk in 1/4 cup flour and lemon zest. Pour this mixture over the baked layer. Now bake 20 minutes more or until the edges start to brown and the center is set. Place the dish on a wire rack and cool before cutting into 24 bars.

On game day, sprinkle bars with the rest of the powdered sugar and crushed lemon drops.

Cover the dish with a lid or heavy foil and place into your cooler until you serve them. They can sit out 90 minutes at the tailgate, but then replace them into the cooler.

Pumpkin Bread Total Time: 1 hour 10 mins Original recipe makes 5 servings Ingredients: 1 1⁄2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 cup pumpkin puree, 1⁄2 cup olive oil (can sub with canola or vegetable), 2 eggs, Beaten, 1⁄4 cup water, 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg, 1⁄2 teaspoon allspice, 1⁄2 cup walnuts (optional) Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift together flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda. In a separate bowl combined pumpkin, oil, eggs, water and spices. Then, combine with dry ingredients, but do not mix too thoroughly. Stir in walnuts. Pour into a well-buttered 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake 50-60 minutes until a thin skewer poked in the very center of the loaf comes out clean. Turn out of the pan and let cool on a rack.

Deli opens with fresh look, menu

By Sam Elliott • news@currentzionsville.com The fifth Gandolfo’s Deli to open in Indiana in the past 15 months, the company’s new Whitestown restaurant is its new biz first prototype following a rebranding effort that includes new menu items and a fresh look for the New York-inspired eatery.

The Marketplace at Anson’s latest addition, at 6685 Whitestown Parkway celebrated its grand opening Sept. 21 and awarded its first 100 customers a free travel mug and free coffee for one year.

Gandolfo’s offers a wide variety of New York-inspired sandwich options in addition to salads, pasta, and Nathan’s hot dogs.

“People are wanting to know what they’re eating and where it’s coming from,” said Dain Pool, chief development officer and vice president of Pool’s Restaurant Group. “All our meats are signature meats and all our own brand.”

Pool recommends “The Big Apple” for hungry eaters giving Gandolfo’s a try for the first time. It’s a sizable sandwich packed with roast beef, capicola ham, feta cheese, onions, pepperoncinis, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar on the company’s rustic Italian proprietary bread.

“We work with Bronx Bagels. They’re actually overnighted in,” Pool said. “You know how people always say the reason why the bagels and pizza tastes different in New York is the water? It’s New York water.”

All nine central Indiana counties F.C. Tucker tracks experienced varying declines of inventory. Boone County saw a 12 percent decline in inventory compared to August 2014. County data also revealed a 2.1 percent decrease in the average year-to-date sale price, now at $278,429, but still the highest in the ninecounty area.

• In Zionsville, year-to-date home sale prices dipped 2.5 percent compared to the same time last year to $377,364.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, six were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 11 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; seven were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and six were priced $100,000

to $199,999.

• Inventory moved at a slightly slower pace in Zionsville in August 2015. Overall, homes sold in 77 days – four days slower than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had slightly fewer options available to them. Last month, 199 homes were available for sale, which were 17 fewer homes compared to August 2014.

• Pended home sales have slipped in Zionsville. In August 2015, 30 homes sold – a decline of 13 homes compared to August 2014.

The residential real estate story in the Indianapolis area continues to be declining inventory and increasing prices, which is attractive for home sellers. Although we saw a slight decline in home sales in August, the overall trend is positive. Interest rates and unemployment remain low, and consumer confidence is relatively strong.

Survivors honored at match

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Breast cancer survivors were honored during the fifth annual “Take a Shot Against Breast Cancer” ZCHS soccer tribute game Sept. 10. Each survibreast cancer vor sported a pink jersey with a number on the back representing her years as a survivor. Junior varsity and varsity soccer players escorted the survivors onto the field.

Cupcakes, pink T-shirts, pink socks, pink beads and pink clothespins were for sale during the game with proceeds going to Relay for Life earmarked for breast cancer research. Pink

shirts and other items will be sold at soccer and football games throughout the season.

“If it’s pink, we sell it,” said organizer Jodi Gietl.

This is the fifth year for the event that was initiated by soccer coach Ramon Aguillon when his mother-in-law was diagnosed. The event has raised $10,000 in five years.

Keynote speaker Sandi Bierman, a seven-year survivor, addressed the audience and players from both teams before the game to share the importance of mammograms and how her diagnosis was “lucky” that it was caught so early.

“Tonight’s about the survivors,” Gietl said.

“We want to help them tell their stories.”

The goal was to achieve an inviting and engaging room for the whole family to enjoy.

1. Custom wainscoting was installed to create a feature wall that allowed the crawl space access to blend right in.

2. Built-in cabinetry allowed the perfect storage solution for family scrapbooks and allowed the media equipment to be hidden from view.

3. A new electric fireplace and large projector screen now create a prime focal point in the room.

4. A small bar with glass tile was added for easy entertaining.

5. Additional columns were added to create a continuous flow and more defined area for furniture.

6. Soft gray paint and LED lighting contributed to the transitional style of the space.

Background Info: This newer home is located in the Brookhaven Subdivision in Zionsville. The basement was originally completed with spec finishes but the clients were ready for a more custom basement.

Before problems: The family spent a lot of time in this space and wanted to create a more enjoyable atmosphere. The columns were awkwardly placed, the entertainment center was too small, and the crawl space access was easily noticed.

A small wet bar area was also desired for entertainment.

Commentary by Don Knebel To most people, the Vikings were uncivilized brutes, who plundered and ravished Christian Europe during the Middle Ages. travel In fact, the Vikings (or Norsemen) were skilled explorers and traders, whose legacy can be seen in the small town of Sigtuna, Sweden.

The Vikings were descendants of Germanic tribes who settled in what is now Scandinavia. They were originally farmers, but became seafarers in the eighth century, perhaps seeking new lands for their heirs to cultivate.

Using their technologically advanced “long boats,” Vikings ventured as far west as what is now Newfoundland and as far east as Constantinople, trading with the people they found and occasionally establishing settlements. If they learned that the people they encountered were not good fighters, they sometimes found it easier to plunder and steal than farm or trade, giving rise to their current reputation.

Lacking paper or parchment, Vikings wrote on stone slabs called “runestones” using phonetic letters formed by easy-to-carve straight lines. Runestones usually memorialized Viking

dead but sometimes chronicled noteworthy accomplishments or identified property. The writing on runestones typically followed a serpentine path around the stone. After Vikings adopted Christianity in the 10th century, runestones often contained a cross.

Vikings founded Sigtuna in 980 A.D., making it the oldest town in Sweden. The current layout of the town follows the original Viking design and contains about 150 runestones, the most of any city in the world. Some runestones were reused as building material, but several remain upright and legible. Sigtuna, where Sweden’s coins were first minted, today has a population of about 8,500, but retains a medieval feel, with a picturesque main street, low wooden buildings and a magnificent thirteenth century brick Gothic church Sigtuna, a 45-minute drive from Stockholm, provides an opportunity to learn about the Vikings. One lesson – their battle helmets never included horns.
