ZCS looking for funds for new roof, HVAC at PVE

Zionsville Community Schools is assembling a team of experts to find a way to replace the aging roof and HVAC system education at Pleasant View Elementary, items described as the “highest priority in the district for replacement in the near future” in a staff report presented to the school board.

The school board approved a plan Sept. 12 to work with attorneys, financial advisors, engineers and others to complete a comprehensive study and find a solution. ZCS Chief Financial Shafer Officer Mike Shafer said preliminary cost estimates for fixing the HVAC, which includes the original 1982 system in the older building on campus and a roof that is more than 20 years old, came in at more than $1 million each.

“These roofs are well past their intended service life and have come to the point at which we are now patching the patches,” Shafer said.

ZCS has not yet identified funding for the repairs.

“We are working to coordinate the efforts of these various professionals and expect to report back to the board at an upcoming meeting on a unified plan,” Shafer said.

The district had to slow its pace on completing capital projects about eight years ago after state-imposed tax caps went into effect.

Since then, the caps have led to a loss of $18.4 million for the district, Shafer said.

The board also approved several other projects Sept. 12. They are: • Upgrades to the fire alarm panel at Zionsville West Middle School, which has been experiencing frequent signal interruptions. Cost is quoted at $22,000 and will be funded from remaining 2005 bond funds.

• Additional power for bus engine heaters along the north fence line at the transportation complex. Power is being supplied through extension cords, which is “unreliable and unsafe” and a type of situation that led to a fire in Westfield, resulting in the complete loss of several buses, according to the staff report. The cost is estimated at $40,000 and will be paid from the transportation fund.

• Replacement of the original large hard surface play courts at Union Elementary, which have developed significant cracks.

Approximate cost is $96,075 and will be funded through the GROW fund, which is revenue collected by ZCS from its before- and after-school care and preschool programs. Work is expected to be done in the summer of 2017.

• Adding a public address system at the Educational Services Center to improve communication throughout the building.

Approximate cost is $5,400, and it will be paid through GROW funds.

• Adding interior doors between the waiting area and offices at Stonegate, Boone Meadow and Eagle elementary schools.

Cost estimates for Stonegate and Boone Meadow elementaries are $12,000 each and $35,000 at Eagle Elementary. GROW funds will pay for these costs.

New high school tours – Traders Point Christian High School is hosting a special informational event at 6 p.m. Sept. 30 for families to visit the new $7.5 million high school campus. Families should arrive at Knights Stadium just west of Traders Point Christian Church on the school’s campus between 6 and 6:30 p.m. to tour the new high school Learning Center under construction and opening August 2017.

Tails on the Trails – This event is a chance for dogs and their owners to get out and stay active this fall. With each completed walk the dog earns a chance to win one a weekly wag bag drawings.

Brush and limb collections – The Town of Zionsville’s Street & Stormwater Dept. will provide curbside brush and limb collection from Oct. 3-14.

Pancake breakfast – The Zionsville Fire Dept. will celebrate 35 years of serving pancakes at the annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser from 6 to 11 a.m.

Oct. 1 at Zionsville Fire Station #91, 100 N. Ford Rd. In addition to pancakes, the event will include a toppings bar, sausage and a bake sale. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children.

Zionsville working to alleviate Village traffic

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Among the many road improvements Zionsville residents will see in the future is a plan to alleviate traffic in the transportation Village.

“We’re going through engineering on how to configure the intersection at First Street, Main Street and Sycamore,” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said.

Roundabouts have been eliminated as an option, so town engineers are exploring other possibilities.

“We’re looking at larger, more efficient intersections and possibly extending First Street

south,” he said.

That plan would create a road through the property on the south side of First Street that would curve east to connect with Main Street.

“Nothing is definitive yet,” Haak said.

When the traffic configuration is finalized, Haak said the town plans to sell the property at the corner of Sycamore and Haak Main streets that was previously the location of a PNC bank. The town purchased the property in 2013, in part to maintain parking for visitors.

This project, coupled with other road repaving and updates, will keep drivers on alert in the next few years.

According to the 2015 Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating, more than 50 percent of Zionsville’s roads were rated “poor.” More than 80 percent were rated “fair” to “poor.”

“Our roads are not different than most communities in the state,” Haak said. “We all need help. We all need more funding from the state.”

Haak said the town has benefited from state grants and funds, and he plans to aggressively pursue grants in the future to maximize dollars.

“There’s going to be a lot of infrastructure going on in the foreseeable future,” he said.

ZPC delays vote on Cobble Creek Compiled by Ann Marie Shambaugh • AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Plan Commission met Sept. 19 to discuss a proposed neighborhood, signage changes and more.

What happened: The plan commission tabled a vote on the Cobble Creek development, which would add 105 houses designed for empty nesters on nearly 100 acres south of Oak Street between the Russell Lake, Thornhill and Spring Hills neighborhoods.

What it means: Developers presented a traffic study and drainage plan, requested at the August meeting, to the town less than a week before the commission meeting. Commissioners said they didn’t have adequate time to review the new information and delayed a vote.

What’s next: The commission is expected to discuss the item again at its October meeting.

What happened: The commission approved an amendment to allow for an LED pricing sign at the Getgo planned for 7011 Whitestown Pkwy.

What it means: Earlier this year the plan commission approved a development plan for Getgo, a fuel station and convenience store. The original plans called for signage to be changed manually, but the amendment allows the store to use a digital LED sign instead.

What happened: The commission granted a continuance request for a proposed commercial development known as 200 West along Sycamore Street.

What it means: Developers requested additional time to work on project details because they didn’t feel they had adequate time to update the plans after meeting with nearby residents.

What’s next: The commission is expected to discuss the development at its October meeting.

Straight ticket voting changes – Straight party voting has changed in Indiana. Hoosiers will still be able to cast a straight ticket Nov. 8, but that vote will not count for individual candidates for county council or town council at-large. Voters now need to select each candidate they wish to elect for atlarge county council and town council seats.

Offering “a different kind of festival experience,” Palette owner Rebecca Cisernos created a Fall Festival achievement drawing competition this year to inspire children to share their favorite part of the annual event through art.

The winner, Bella Pappas of Sheridan, used colored pencils to depict the bounce house obstacle course.

“That was the easiest, because it’s right there,” Bella said. “All the kids like the bounce houses.”

Contest participants were provided with all of the supplies to create their art and the freedom to create whatever they wanted.

“By working on-site she had to experience the chaos of the kids corner from a reflective perspective,” Cisernos said. “I’m so proud of her, because she wasn’t given an example of what should be done or an expectation to meet.”

Bella, a fifth grader at Sheridan Elementary School, attended this year’s Zionsville Lion’s Club Fall Festival in hopes of seeing the pet pavilion. She was awarded two free art lessons from Palette for her winning entry.

year, she was named Cartoonist of the Year by her school’s Cartoon Club, an after-school drawing program. Bella hopes to someday be a fashion designer.

Pumpkin Patch aims to fill void

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com When Country Market closed last year, it left a void in local pumpkin sales that St. Francis Episcopal Church wants to fill. fall “I ordered more pumpkins this year because of that,” said Deb Lanie, who is in charge of Pumpkin Patch, an 11-year-old church fundraiser to support annual mission trips and children in Boone County.

Pumpkins range from basic orange to decorative white and multicolored, along with gourds, mini pumpkins and pie pumpkins.

“It reminds me of fall, because there are different colors like red and orange,” said Zionsville West Middle School fifth grader Will Selm, who was among the many children who helped unload and organize the pumpkins when they arrived last year. He plans to help unload again this year when the Pumpkin Patch opens Oct. 1, despite it being his birthday.

“We actually love it enough to do it on a birthday,” said his mother, Elizabeth Selm.

Pumpkin sales will take place weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the church until all the pumpkins are sold, “which sometimes isn’t until Halloween day,” Lanie said.

“We came up with (an order) number that will hopefully be enough but not too many,” she said.

“I like the ones that are fat, because I can add more detail when carving,” said Will, who will help with pumpkin sales this year by counting and measuring pumpkins that people want to purchase.

Hit the Bricks returns Oct. 1

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Tim Ottinger will start his Zionsville Optimist Club one-year term as president on the club’s biggest day of the fundraiser year.

The Zionsville Optimist Club’s Hit the Bricks 5K Race and Fun Run & Walk is set to begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 1 at Zionsville Community High School.

Ottinger said this is the 34th year for the 5K run.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year and primarily goes for the scholarship we award every year to a Zionsville high school graduate,” said Ottinger, publicity chairman of the 5K. “Every year we award a $1,000 four-year renewal scholarship that the seniors apply for.”

The race starts and finishes at ZCHS. Ottinger expects approximately 250 runners.

The Optimist Club was founded in 1981. Ottinger, a 1972 ZCHS graduate, has been a club member since returning to Zionsville from California in 2009.

Ottinger said his former ZCHS classmate Jim Haines, a Zionsville optometrist, was the first ZOC member and was instrumental in starting the 5K. Ottinger said Traders Point Running Club

and Eagle Elementary Running Club will take part in the 5K this year.

“Everything the Optimists does is for youth,” Ottinger said.

Ottinger said the Optimist Club held a fundraiser last spring to raise money for Eagle Elementary playground equipment.

Each year in early December, the club buys and wraps holiday gifts designed for local families with specific needs. Ottinger said the gifts are then taken to Zionsville Middle School, which helps coordinate the program.

The Optimist Club supports the Zionsville Boys and Girls Club, ZCHS after-prom event, Little League and Lincoln Park Music Series, among others.

Founded in 1928 as a “fresh air” camp for children suffering from tuberculosis, today Jameson Camp hosts kids who typically reside in households below the poverty level. More than half struggle with a social, emotional or behavioral challenge. The camp’s mission is to inspire kids to discover their strengths. Located on 130 acres of wooded land on the west side of Indianapolis, the camp encourages kids to “get outside and grow inside.”

There are many ways to help.

Zionsville resident Leslie Concannon is involved in the Women’s Auxiliary. The group plays a variety of roles in support of the camp, including teaching classes. Concannon teaches arts and crafts two mornings each summer. In that role, she selects a particular craft and provides supplies to teach approximately 30 kids during class. OktoberFest: Germany or St. Al? Commentary by Ward Degler

If you want to find out what an authentic Oktoberfest celebration is really like, you have two options. plain talk The first is drop whatever you are doing and make immediate plane reservations for Frankfurt, Germany. Then buy a train ticket for a little town called Bad Kreusnacht. The train is a local, or Bummelzug, so it stops at every village along the way to pick up other passengers headed for Oktoberfest.

You won’t have to ask directions to Oktoberfest when you get there, either. Just follow the crowd. Nobody is going anywhere else.

At the celebration you will find competing oompah bands blaring away at full volume.

Some will be marching around outside while others will be ensconced in a corner of one of the Oktoberfest beer halls.

The main beer hall at Bad Kreusnacht will have two bands. The plan is for one to play for awhile, then the other takes over so the first can freshen their beer steins. After several such freshenings, however, both will wind up playing at the same time.

Sometime before dawn folks will migrate back to the train station for the ride home.

A word of caution here: there will be several trains going to several different destinations.

It’s easy to get on the wrong train and wind up on the wrong side of Germany. I know, it happened to me.

If all of this is a bit too much, consider your second option. It has two parts, and both happen Oct. 1 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Oak Street.

Part one: PumkinFest starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. PumpkinFest is for the whole family, but mostly for the kids who get to adopt a pumpkin, decorate it, put it on display, get their faces painted with all kinds of weird colors, and then go for a hayride.

Part two: OktoberFest starts at 6:30 p.m. for the grown-ups. Same picnic tables, beer, German food and polka-blaring oompah band you would find in Germany. After you freshen your stein a few times, you can enter the yodeling contest.

That’s something they don’t even have in Germany.

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com For the past six months, Adam Tousley has been relying on boats, bikes and his own two feet to get where he needs to go in southern Myanmar, where other modes of transportation are cover story impractical. As a field coordinator for a non-governmental organization, he helps provide technical support to the Myanmar ministry of health, specifically for maternal and child health practices as recommended by the World Health Organization.

It’s not a path Tousley expected to take, especially after the stress he felt as a student at Zionsville Community High School. He hopes that other students recognize there are many post-graduate directions in life.

“The pressure that you feel (in school) is far higher than what real life is,” Tousley said. “I think that it really gives kids tunnel vision. They never really get the freedom to sit back and explore other careers that are out there, careers like this.”

Tousley also said that his stress level decreased significantly in college, graduate school and the military.

His tour of Iraq gave him a desire to find work internationally.

“The leadership experience I got, the ability to deal with people and motivate people and have empathy, I got that all from the military,” he said.

While volunteering with Myanmar refugees in Seattle, he became interested in the issues and moved overseas. Wanting to work with an international aid organization, he found his position through networking and his willingness to work in “areas that were less desirable,” he said.

Tousley’s education background is not in health care. Rather, his focus in Myanmar is finance, management and human resources.

Life in Myanmar is centered around the nearby bodies of water, as captured in these photos by Adam Tousley of Zionsville.

Tousley works as a field coordinator in the Asian nation.

“The technical aspects I have to understand, but it’s done by the Myanmar doctors and nurses,” he said. “Their practices are not necessarily recognized as evidence-based practices.”

His group grapples with respecting traditional and cultural practices versus those that are medically necessary or cautionary.

“At the end of the day, they’re not going to do it if they don’t want to,” he said. “And that’s the challenge I have right now is getting them to believe in it.”

With most villages accessible only by water and hospitals being expensive and far from reach, it can be a challenge to convince women to visit a medical facility.

“Our job is to give them the option to give birth in an institution,” he said.

Tousley works with locals to train volunteers, such as auxiliary midwives and community health promoters, who can identify complications and alert local women when there is a health concern or imminent issue that requires transportation to a hospital.

With a new government in Myanmar, Tousley hopes there will be more resources focused on health care. His program will end in a year, and then the people of Myanmar will hopefully carry on these medical practices. But in the meantime he’s not thinking about his next move.

“Something I’ve learned is you really have to be happy where you are,” he said.

On the other end of the non-government organization spectrum is disaster relief, responding to sudden natural or human-made catastrophes and providing immediate aid to the people and societies impacted.

ZCHS graduate Nick Bechert first learned about these organizations as a student at Indiana University. “I Bechert knew at some point I’d get away and do disaster relief work,” he said.

He volunteered to help in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and while working alongside members of the organization Samaritan’s Purse, was offered a job. His plan was to attend graduate school, so he took short assignments abroad, intending to resume his education during a lull.

So far, there hasn’t been one.

Six years later, Bechert is still with Samaritan’s Purse and responds wherever a disaster occurs.

“It can happen all of a sudden,” he said of his assignments.

Bechert is currently in northern Iraq, anticipating thousands of refugees fleeing an expected military conflict in Mosul, which is controlled by the terrorist group ISIS. “We have reports from families saying there are no fruits or vegetables in the market,” he said. “They fear for their lives on a daily basis. When they are forced to flee, their situation will become even worse.”

Bechert works in logistics, finance and sanitation. He said the number of people on the team can vary depending on the size of the disaster and available funding.

Often hiring locals, Bechert’s assignments are generally short-term to provide the most immediate guidance and support and to set infrastructure in place for long-term assistance.

Whenever he returns to Zionsville, Bechert is active with the youth ministry at Zionsville Presbyterian Church.

He calls it “the best of both worlds” in terms of doing what he enjoys.

“To have that balance, it’s great,” Bechert said. “Who knows what it will look like eventually, but it’s a dream job at the moment.”

Commentary by Susan Stamper Brown We live in a country run by people who tell us that if a man puts on a dress and says he’s a woman we are supposed to take him at his word. But if a man goes on a murderous rampage in the name of Allah, and ISIS claims responsibility, we shouldn’t draw conclusions. Americans selected this band of leftist fools who have zero aptitude for dealing with terrorism. In a 12-hour span Sept. 18 and 19, we saw that it is not safe to shop in a mall in Minnesota, or run a 5k in New Jersey or walk in New York City without risk of terrorism. “Rest assured,” they tell us, “justice will be served.” Of course, they are always quick to remind us to not make assumptions. Heaven forbid we offend someone’s sensibilities. The beautiful fragrance of the American way of life is being overtaken by the stench of dead flies resting on the laurels of political correctness. When ISIS claimed responsibility for the Minnesota attack, it wasn’t enough for the FBI to draw conclusions about the motive of the stabber.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, a pipe bomb-like explosive device detonated along the route of a 5K charity race to help Marines and sailors, and in New York City, 29 people were injured when an improvised explosive device went off in a Manhattan neighborhood. Bill de Blasio, mayor of New York City, overly obsessed with controlling what New Yorkers eat and drink, immediately called the bombing “a very serious incident.” Apparently, the mayor couldn’t get his sodium-free tongue to utter the word “terror.” A case of follow the leader? You decide.

Dawn of the dread

Sometimes we dread the unknown. It scares us to peer into the abyss failing to comprehend the bottom. Other times, the known can hold as much sway in bringing us to the brink of breakdown. We note a coming obstacle and, recalling the difficulty in overcoming it at our last outing, drag our feet to avoid the confrontation.

Either way, dread is here to stay. And in many cases, we are entirely justified in feeling the strong sense of foreboding. But with so many things in life proving to be difficult, and so many more unpleasant, how can we be a productive human if controlled by dirty doctor dread?

There is a talisman to arrest this demon.

From the dawn of dread, time has demonstrated to be its ultimate slayer. There has proven no difficult period, no rough patch in life, no embarrassing moment that has not, in due, unrelenting time, come to pass.

Although we cannot control the object of our anxiety, whatever it may be, and even if it

may have irreversibly changed the direction of our lives, the intensity of the burden will fade.

To be sure, we have all confronted demons and lost wars. Some more significant than others. Relationships fail. Careers veer off course. People die. But each of these will eventually cede to the clock. As soon as we direct ourselves to move on, we are free to do so.

Likewise, the petty challenges of our daily routines — tests to be taken, reports to be filed, and rooms to be cleaned — all come and go with no more power over our lives than we give them. Prepare as best as possible. Take the test. Live with the consequences. Move on. Dread is still with us, but we are its master. So relax, it will all be over soon.

The other night I woke up to a horrible smell. I thought at first it was my own breath, but after a cautious humor sniff and the recollection that I had indeed brushed, flossed and Listerined, I sat up and began looking around the darkened room. The odor seemed to be everywhere. When my eyes finally rested upon my peacefully sleeping husband, I solved the mystery. Doo was emitting noxious garlic fumes from every pore of his body, probably the remnants of his Thai food lunch.

Again.

But here’s the weird thing, I can’t tell if it’s him or if it’s me. What I mean is, does Doo have a strange affliction that causes him to radiate meal-stink eight hours post-consumption? Or have I developed such a superhuman sense of smell that even the tiniest waft of onion sweat makes me crazy?

In all fairness to Doo, I also cringe and wave my hand frantically to increase air flow whenever I become trapped in a car with an odiferous teenager who’s straight from a 10-hour color guard practice. That’s not unusual, I suppose, but I’ve noticed I do the same thing even when confronted with what most would consider pleasant scents. For example, I frequently pinch my nose when the aforementioned teen enters a room wearing her new cucumber-aloe spray deodorant, or when her brother dons his cologne. Too much hairspray and/or perfume will also send me running, if I’m lucky enough to have the space to flee.

Doo thinks I have a disorder called hyperosmia, which is really just a hypersensitivity to smell. But according to medical-dictionary. com, it’s common among “neurotic and histrionic personality types,” which clearly is not me. So maybe my issue is middle-age hormones, like when a pregnant woman becomes nauseous at the first hint of fried chicken in the air. Perhaps the good Lord has taken pity on my failing 40-something body, and is compensating me with supersized, estrogen-fueled schnoz abilities.

Whatever the reason, I can see only two choices. Either Doo stops eating flavorful food or I start wearing a nose clip. Peace out.

Turn for the worse Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I seem to have a great deal of trouble turning things off. Turning them on? No sweat.

Light switches, blenders, lamps, humor ovens and fans are a breeze — especially the last one.

When I’d turn off my old car’s ignition and get out, it kept running. There was an additional reason I never bought another Ford Pinto, but I forget why now.

My wife keeps reminding me to turn off my turn signal. My car has six airbags, a rear-view camera and voice-controlled GPS directions.

I’d give it all up if the blinker would go off automatically after I — what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh, yeah: turn.

The other day my wife and I were talking via cell phones. “Dick. Gotta go, I have another call.”

“Okay, see ya.”

“Dick, are you going to hang up or not?”

“I’m trying, Mary Ellen. I pushed the button three times.”

“I’m trying, also. Get off the phone. I don’t want to talk to you anymore.”

“Don’t make this sound so personal.”

Sometimes I can’t get my computer to shut down. I called Kevin, my tech nerd. He asked,

“Did you push the off button?”

“How dumb do you think I am? And don’t mention that time for a hundred bucks you got my printer working by just plugging it back in the outlet.”

“Okay, press the power button softly and hold it just a second.”

“I did that. It won’t turn off.”

“Then press the power button really hard and hold it for 20 seconds.”

“How can both of those be right? I’ll just pull out the plug.”

“Good idea. I can use the money.”

I can’t turn off the loud commercials that play in the background of websites because I can’t find where the X is to close the windows. I’d turn the whole computer off, but remember: I don’t know how to do that.

Yesterday, my wife wanted to go out for a date night. I suggested a sandwich at Jimmy John’s and the new Vin Diesel movie.

“So much for romance,” she said.

Finally, I learned how to turn something off.

The story follows a Baker (Don Farrell) and his wife (Heather Patterson King), who wish to have a child; Cinderella Kingston (Amanda Downey), who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack (Danny Kingston), who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break it. They venture into the woods where they meet Cinderella and Jack, who are each on their own quests. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

After all, Mayall released concerts his first album in 1965, and his 64th came out this year.

“It’s a different show every night, but it’s mainly drawn from my extensive catalog, with an accent on the new material,” Mayall said.

“It changes every night. It’s a different setlist every night. As long as we get a good crosssection going, that’s all that counts. We’re creative musicians, and it shows in the material we play,” Mayall, dubbed the “Godfather of British Blues,” will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 29 at The Warehouse, 254 First Ave. SW, Carmel.

At 82, Mayall is still passionate about performing.

“We love what we do. We get along together, and we have a great time performing,” Mayall said. “That’s why we work so much, because we like to play.”

Mayall’s lineup has been together for approximately eight years.

Mayall’s Bluesbreakers band included Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce in 1969 before they both left to form Cream.

Breakfast pastry Commentary by Joe Drozda and Bob Bley It was a sad day when the powers of college football yielded to the viewer numbers of television networks and eliminated the traditional 1 p.m. Saturday start for virtually all games. Now we have Thursday and Friday night games and some 11 a.m. games on Saturday.

Those early games allow us to serve breakfast before the game. If one has multiple burners on their grill, it isn’t hard to cook omelets with all sorts of ingredients. Suggestions are chopped onion, sausage, peppers, cheese, and so on.

Then the cook can heat a flour tortilla on a burner and assemble a great breakfast burrito.

For those tailgaters who don’t want to cook at the tailgate there is always the breakfast casserole. Please, if you are a regular reader, don’t send us emails about how we have repeated a recipe. We’ve had plenty of them in the past.

• 1/4 tsp. pepper • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 1 Tbsp. water Directions: Cook sausage according to package directions and cool slightly; cut into ¼-in. slices and set aside. In a large skillet, sauté hash browns and onion in butter for 6-8 minutes, or until tender. Press hash browns and butter to a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Top with cooked sausage, cheeses, chilies and parsley.

In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, salt and pepper; then pour mixture over cheese.

On a lightly floured surface, unfold pastry sheet; roll into a 13-in. x 9-in. rectangle. Place pastry over egg mixture in a small bowl; combine egg and water and brush over pastry.

Cut slits in top of pastry.

Bake at 400°F for 30 minutes or until set and golden brown. Take this to the game and heat it on any grill with a foil tent. Serve with a side sauce of French’s Dijon mustard mixed with mayonnaise.

Bands co-op gaining momentum

Taylor, a Fishers resident, approached Sahm’s Bar & Grill manager concerts Sean Malloy about his band, TimeSlip, a couple of times about playing at his restaurant. Sahm’s Bar & Grill, 7870 E. 96th St., Fishers, previously had folk singers Saturday nights.

“I gave him a copy of our CD and I told him we’ll play one time for beverages and food,” Taylor said. “If we fill your restaurant up, you have to agree to bring us back every few weeks. He agreed, and we packed the place completely. He was excited and he said, ‘You give me some dates.’”

When the manager needed another band after a cancellation, he called Taylor for a band recommendation.

That led Taylor to suggest he book the bands for Sahm’s for the rest of the summer. He came up with the concept of Saturday Night Originals with all the bands playing their original music. The bands play from 10 p.m. to midnight.

get paid fairly.” Taylor said. “They pay $400 a show, and that’s really supportive. Sahm’s has been very forward-thinking with this Saturday Night Originals. They’ve put their marketing department at my disposal. The reason they’re doing that is we’ve had instant results.

We’re filling their place on most Saturday nights.”

Taylor is hoping other bars/restaurants will adopt the concept.

Centier Bank comes to town

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Family owned Centier Bank opened two branches in Boone County Sept. 14, one inside Whitestown’s Meijer store and new biz the other by the intersection of Ford Road and Oak Street.

“We appreciate the welcoming we have received from the town of Zionsville,” said President and CEO Michael Schrage, who is the fourth generation of leadership for Centier Bank.

“We have the fifth generation lined up,” Schrage said. “You’ll see that fifth and sixth generation coming along, and we will preserve it.”

Zionsville Town Councilor Bryan Traylor, a senior vice president at Centier, was a factor in bringing the bank to Boone County.

“It represents a lot of what Zionsville is, which is family-owned businesses,” Traylor said.

With 54 locations across 11 counties, Centier Bank is the largest privately-owned independent bank in Indiana. Schrage said he expects an expansion of four banks next year, with Noblesville or Fishers as a northern Indianapolis possibility as early as late next year.

The bank was founded in 1895 in Whiting, Ind., as the Bank of Whiting. In celebration of the bank’s 100th anniversary it was renamed Centier.

The Meijer location will be open daily with extended evening hours and a 24-hour ATM. During the grand openings, Schrage made a donation to east and west locations of the Zionsville Boys & Girls Clubs.

After solutions: The goal was to create a new bathroom while also updating the overall layout of the upper level.

1. The upper level of his house had a large hallway and landing at the top of the stairs that was wasted space. We were able to use this space to improve the overall layout of the floorplan. Larger closets for both bedrooms and a full bathroom for the children were created from the unused area.

2. The master bathroom was updated to include a walk-in shower, a double vanity, herringbone floors and a linen closet. The layout was reworked to enlarge the bathroom footprint into unused attic space.

3. The kids bathroom was created from the unused landing space. It has a double vanity and tub which makes it kid-friendly. A towel cabinet for added storage and a laundry chute are unique touches to this bathroom.

4. An addition on the back of the house was created to house a mudroom. The space gave the homeowners some improved organization and functional storage.

Before Background Info: This 1930s Meridian Kessler home was in need of a serious layout rework. These homeowners were looking for more efficient use of space on their upper level.

Before problems: This home had only one bathroom on the second level and the family needed to add a second full bathroom to accommodate their children. This not only made the whole family happy to have their own spaces but also added value to the home.

In Indiana, courts divide a divorcing parties’ property in a manner which is deemed to be fair and reasonable. Indiana is considered a “no-fault” state, meaning the division of property is not dependent on who caused the relationship to end. Instead, the law of equity determines property distribution. Indiana law follows the “one-pot” theory for the division of marital property, which presumes all marital property is put into one pot and that a fifty-fifty (50/50) division of all marital assets and liabilities is presumed to be fair and reasonable. However, there are various factors Courts consider in determining whether or not a deviation from the equal division is warranted, including: the contribution of each spouse to the acquisition of property; the economic circumstances of each spouse at the time of the disposition of the property; the conduct of the parties during the marriage as related to disposition or dissipation of their property; and the earning ability of the parties. Thus, while an equal division is presumed, one party can request more than fifty percent of the marital estate.

However, what if the parties are never legally married? How does a court divide property and is the “no fault” theory still applicable?

When ending an engagement, generally the laws governing a divorce do not apply to an unmarried couple. If the parties are never legally married, both parties are entitled to ownership of their own property and debts, unless there was an intentional decision to combine assets, which has been formalized. While this may seem easy enough, a few questions may remain, especially as they relate to property that once symbolized a couples’ affection for one another and contemplation of marriage.

Under Indiana law, what happens to the engagement ring if the engagement is called off? Well, the courts must determine ownership of the engagement ring. In determining such ownership when the condition of marriage is never satisfied, courts either look to a “fault-based” or “no-fault” approach. The majority of jurisdictions utilizes a “fault-based” approach and order the engagement ring to be returned only if the engagement was broken by mutual agreement or unjustifiably by the receiver of the ring.

The “fault-based” theory stems from the idea that if the engagement ring is a token and symbol of the couple’s pledge to wed one another, it would seem only fair that the violator of such promise should not also get to keep the ring.

However, keeping consistent with Indiana’s “no-fault” system of divorce, we utilize a “no-fault” approach when it comes to an engagement ring dispute. Thus, if no marriage occurs, the ring or the monetary value contributed to the ring legally belongs to the giver of the ring, not the person to whom it was gifted.

Who is responsible for the wedding expenses? If contracts were signed for the wedding at the time the unmarried couple ends their engagement, then liability for the contract remains with the party who entered into the agreement. A contact occurs when two parties enter into a legally binding agreement. For example, a bride may enter into a contract with a florist to create her bouquet for the wedding day if the bride agrees to pay for the service. When the bride agrees, then a binding agreement is made between the bride and florist. If a cancellation is necessary, the bride would be the party considered legally liable for the contract. Upon cancellation of a contract with a vendor, the vendor and party cancelling should proceed according to the contract between the parties. Often times, such contracts will include a cancellation clause that details what happens in the event of a cancellation…whereby the contract might allows for a party to receive back their deposit, only pay a partial price, or pay nothing at all. The terms agreed to would be fact specific to each party and should be carefully examined before entering into the agreement.

Helsinki and the czar

Commentary by Don Knebel Senate Square is the most popular tourist destination in Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

The grand statue at its center travel remembers a ruler of Russia, which exercised control over the country for more than a century.

After defeating Sweden in 1809, Russia gained control of Finland and made it a duchy, with the Russian czar as duke. In 1812, Czar Alexander I moved the Finnish capital to Helsinki because of its proximity to St. Petersburg. Because much of Helsinki had been destroyed during the war, the czar engaged C. L. Engel, a German-born architect, to design a new city center to match the city’s growing importance. Engel designed a plaza known as Senate Square surrounded by neoclassical buildings, including the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki, the National Library of Finland and the Helsinki Cathedral. The cathedral, with five green domes and statues of the Twelve Apostles on its roof, was modeled after St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg. Completed in 1852, the cathedral is the most famous building in Finland, attracting 350,000 visitors a year.

In 1894, after Czar Alexander II was assassinated in St. Petersburg, the residents of Helsinki erected a statue of him in the middle of Senate Square to recognize his re-establishment of the Diet of Finland in 1867. The love affair with Russia was short-lived. In 1899, Czar Nicholas II began the “Russification of Finland,” cracking down on Finnish autonomy.

In protest, residents of Helsinki put flowers at the feet of Alexander II, whom they considered the “good czar.” After Finland gained its independence from Russia in 1917, some people thought keeping a Russian czar in Senate Square was inappropriate. But Helsinki residents decided to maintain the statue and plant colorful flowers at its base, continuing to honor his efforts on their behalf.
