Miss Fall Festival’s Outstanding Teen Pageant took place Sept. 16 at the Whitestown Municipal Building.

Zionsville Community High School junior Olivia Broadwater won the Talent and Private Interview awards and was crowned Miss Fall Festival’s Outstanding Teen 2019.

The Zionsville Lions Club awarded Broadwater a $500 scholarship. She will compete in the Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen Scholarship Program in June 2019.

“This was so unexpected,” Broadwater said. “I look forward to all the opportunities.”

This was not Broadwater’s first competition win. In July, she was the only one of six Indiana participants to earn a finalist spot for the Songbook Academy at the Palladium in Carmel.

The Fall Festival Pageant was organized by the Zionsville Lions Club. As the winner, Broadwater will work with the club doing various charity work and making appearances throughout the year. She also will ride in the 2019 Fall Festival Parade.

Zionsville Lions Club member Louanne Giralte has been in charge of the pageant, which was established in 2011, since 2012.

“We always do it the week after Fall Festival so it doesn’t conflict with the festival. More Lions members are available to help,” Giralte said.

Fall Festival events were canceled Sept. 7-9 because of rain.

Some events were rescheduled for Sept. 15.

Festival admission was free, and there was no entry fee for contestants. Flowers were provided by Zionsville floral shop From Bud to Blooms.

Auschwitz survivor Kor to speak in Zionsville

Zionsville Community High School Sophomore Sophie Quick is committed to positive change. Citing recent MOTIVATIONAL local events such as the fatal shooting of Boone County Deputy Jacob Pickett, the May 25 shooting at Noblesville West Middle School and the July 28 defacement of Congregation Shaarey Tefilla in Carmel, Quick reached out to Auschwitz survivor Eva Kor hoping to coax her to visit Zionsville.

Quick, a member of Girls Scout Troop 04487, is earning her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, by bringing Kor to speak in Zionsville Sept. 26. The Gold Award challenges Girl Scouts to use their vision for change and to make the world a better place, locally and globally.

“Recent local events have shown that violence is not just widespread but can be centered close to home. I wanted to bring (Eva) here to spread her message,” Quick said. “She makes the world a better place.

She spreads her message of hope, healing and humanity throughout the country and the world.”

Kor was subjected to human experimentation at an Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. She received international attention in 2017 when she publicly forgave the Nazis for the horrific events they put her through.

Kor, 84, travels the world giving speeches. She founded CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute in 1984 to educate the public about eugenics, the Holocaust and the power of forgiveness.

Quick originally planned to promote Kor’s visit by handing out flyers during the Sept.

“I was disappointed. It would have been a perfect chance to let people in on the event and how Eva is a super hero,” Quick said.

“However, I have found other ways to promote the event. I have been going wide on social media, and I had a booth at the Zionsville Farmer’s Market where I sold tickets and passed out information.”

On Sept. 26, Kor will speak at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. ZCHS students and seventh- and eighth-grade students will gather to hear the talk. Later that evening, she will speak at Zionsville United Methodist Church.

Doors will open at ZUMC at 5:30 p.m. for an open house-style event. The Girl Scouts, WFYI and Candles will be hosting the event, and Candles will be selling books and CDs. Additional speakers will open the talk at 6:15 p.m. and Kor will take the stage at 6:30 p.m.

Quick is confident Kor’s message will positively impact the community.

“Eva is a real superhero. She’s done so many great things,” Quick said. “I think she could do good here in Zionsville.”

Polo fundraising event to help Pickett’s family

Money raised at Zionsville’s Hickory Hall Polo Club Oct. 6 will allow the Pickett family to participate in National Police Week activities in Washington, D.C. in May 2019. The week, designed to help families navigate loss, honors law enforcement with a candlelight vigil and memorial service.

Pickett, a K-9 officer, was fatally shot in the line of duty in March.

The Chandler family, who founded Hickory Hall Polo Club, approached the Picketts about the idea because they wanted to help however they could.

Donna Chandler wants to raise $40,000 at the event. Last month, the club raised $75,00 for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept.

The afternoon will be filled with activities, beginning with a K-9 demonstration prior to the match, a candy-drop by airplane at halftime and a live auction. Gates open at 11 a.m. and the match begins at 1 p.m. Police officers will collect admission at the gate with all proceeds going to the Pickett family.

Admission is $20 per vehicle on the day of the event. Reserved tailgate boxes are available in advance for $250 through Eventbrite.com.

Guests may bring their own food for tailgating during the match and meals will be available for purchase from LA Café.

“We’re going to make it fun,” Chandler said.

For Zionsville High School special education teacher Rachel Kniager, getting involved with the school’s UniSPORTS fied Flag Football team was an easy decision.

“Last year, a colleague reached out about piloting a flag football team and asked if I would be interested in coaching,” Kniager said. “I was playing in my own flag football league at the time, so I thought it was a great opportunity for our school community.

I am excited to see where we can take this team and program in the years to come.”

In 2017, Noblesville, Carmel and Zionsville did a test run of Unified Flag Football for the state with scrimmages. ZCHS is one of 25 teams that will participate in the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Unified Flag Football State Tournament. Zionsville is playing in a two-team sectional and will play host to West Lafayette in the sectional final.

Unified Sports pairs athletes, those with intellectual disabilities, with partners, those without intellectual disabilities.

The games feature five players (three athletes and two partners) on each team.

Six players returned from last season’s team, which started slowly but finished strong. There are 10 players competing, six athletes and four partners.

“We have students with all types of abilities on our teams. Every student has something to offer,” said Kniager, who is juggling time with her position as ZCHS assistant girls soccer coach this fall. “All students have strengths, regardless of their abilities, and Unified events allows students to showcase their strengths and talents and be celebrated by their community. Unified events allow students of all backgrounds to come together for a greater purpose and share pride in their community. Unified Sports are just like typical sports. They are competitive, filled with pride and fun for all involved.”

ZCHS player Nathan Ziesmer said Unified Sports “gives people with disabilities a chance to play competitive sports and allows them to participate fully without being held back by their disability, whatever it may be.”

Ziesmer said it allows him to meet new people he might not interact with during the normal school day.

“It’s just like any other club or activity and it helps you branch out to others, meet new people and have fun while doing it,” he said.

Children Librarian Kelli Brooks said more movie theaters are hosting sensory-friendly film nights and she thought the library would be the perfect setting for a similar event.

Brooks said the event had a good turnout and attendees requested more events like it.

“The audience was a mix of families with toddlers who were too young to sit through a movie in the theater and families with their children who have special needs,” Brooks said. “The librarians are already brainstorming about similar events for the future.”

The Boone County Special Olympics Tennis Camp took place last month at Zionsville Community High School. The camp has been at ZCHS since 2015 and serves more than 30 Boone County residents each year. The program is free for athletes, who receive 8 hours of tennis instruction, a gently used racquet, T-shirt, snacks and a party at the end of camp. Every athlete is paired with a volunteer buddy. The St. Alphonsus Golf League held the 10th annual Lanny Parsley Memorial Golf Outing at Zionsville Golf Course Aug. 19. Parsley was an original member of the St. Alphonsus Golf League. Cycle of the Moontown 2003 - Pete Mattingly began homebrewing. The first beer was King of Troy, a lager named for his grandfather’s hometown of Troy, Ind. 2006 - Patrick Mattingly and Cody Peczkowski began homebrewing while attending Purdue University. Their first beer was a porter called Into the Void, using hand-me-down equipment from Pete.

Moontown brews up six months of success

Except this venture was more than a dream or COVER STORY a leap of faith. The folks at Moontown Brewing Co. knew what they were getting into, and they hand-picked the people and place that would make it happen.

Moontown, Whitestown’s first brewery, opened in March and recently celebrated a successful first six months in business. The brewery will host its inaugural Oktoberfest celebration Oct. 6.

“I can’t even imagine it going any better than it has gone.

We are already getting pressured to can beer, distribute and expand,” Moontown co-founder Bobby Mattingly said.

A culmination of several individual aspirations led to the March 2018 launch of Moontown. Zionsville resident and commercial builder Pete Mattingly had a passion for homebrew since the early 2000s. His son, Patrick, inherited his old equipment in 2006 and began brewing with his Purdue University colleague, Cody Peczkowski.

In 2007, Pete’s King of Troy lager was given a perfect score by the judges at the Indiana State Fair Homebrew Competition.

“At that point he knew he was making some good beer,” said Bobby, Pete’s youngest son.

A salvaged site

The Mattingly family began brewing in 2015 as Moontown and planned to eventually open a full-scale brewery. They began looking at potential sites in Zionsville, Lebanon and Whitestown. Later that year, Moontown won first place in the inaugural Whitestown Beer Fest. Town Manager Dax Norton approached the family after the festival, and suggested they turn a historic building on Bowers Street into a brewery.

Built in the early 1900s, the building at 345 S. Bowers St. was home to Whitestown High School until 1963. It is part of Whitestown’s “Legacy Core”, the original downtown area.

By the time the building was offered to Moontown, it had deteriorated significantly.

“It was structurally sound but needed a lot of work,” Bobby said.

The town sold the building to the Moontown owners for $1 after agreeing to repair a dilapidated roof.

Pete’s company, MattCon General Contractors, began renovations in May 2017.

Patrick is project manager for the company and oversaw the Moontown construction.

More than a year of restoration included electrical, plumbing and HVAC updates and the construction of interior walls.

Throughout the renovation process, historic elements were preserved, with details such as repainting the basketball court markings and salvaging bleacher seats as wood trim.

The perfect crew

While the brewery was becoming a reality, Bobby and Patrick recruited Peczkowski, who had left a corporate job to pursue his interest in brewing craft beer for Gordon Biersch, a German-style brewery chain. Moontown made Peczkowski an offer mid-2017. That same week, Gordon Biersch announced it was closing Peczkowski’s location.

“The timing all lined up too perfectly,” Peczkowski said.

eight rotating taps as well as a full liquor and wine list. Private events and concerts are held in the attached 1915 Room.

Sourcing ingredients locally is important to Moontown. In a tall silo outside the building, malt from Sugar Creek Malt in neighboring Lebanon is stored. It is not only used in brewing, but also in flatbreads and breading, after being ground to a flour.

Bobby recruited fellow Zionsville Community High School graduate Dave Slama from his job at Bluebeard to become Moontown’s head chef. Slama has cultivated relationships with local farmers and artisans, including Smoking Goose Meatery and Tinker Coffee of Indianapolis and Lebanon’s Saint Adrian Meat & Sausage.

Also on the team are Samson Corrado, who attended both ZCHS and IU with Bobby, and Georgia Rheinhardt, who Bobby met at IU. With her experience managing events at Traders Point Creamery, Rheinhardt was the perfect person to take on the role of marketing and events manager.

“The quality of the people involved has made all the difference,” Peczkowski said.

“This was not a whim and a hope.”

Art mart centers on recycling

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com The Do It Again Recycled Art Market started seven years ago with a small group of Zionsville women who had an interest in the environment.

SULLIVANMUNCE Having grown significantly since its launch, the market is now organized by the Boone County Solid Waste Management Division.

The Nov. 3 craft fair is a way to promote recycling and reusing materials that might be destined for a landfill.

“We truly use this as an education program,” said Jennifer Lawrence, executive director of the BCSWMD. The free event also is a nonprofit for the business; vendors keep everything they earn and no booth space is charged.

Approximately 20 vendors will display unique ways they turn discarded items into prizes, such as jewelry or statues.

“We really try hard to make sure our artists are providing a variety of things,” Lawrence said.

Half of this year’s vendors have participated before, including a junk fairy creator who makes creatures, fairies and statues from a variety of mixed media. One new vendor, Beauty and the Bullet, creates jewelry from used bullets.

A junior conservation badge, unique to the BCSWMD, was added this year. Children can complete an activity sheet at the event to earn their badge. To keep children occupied, personalized junk art can be created at a number of art tables supplied with glue guns and tape.

Also new is a raffle of conservationthemed items with prizes like a rain barrel and vendor-donated crafts. The first 200 visitors will receive a recyclable shopping bag.

The market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center at 255 W. Hawthorne Street.

What’s in a name?

Commentary by Ward Degler When I lived in South Dakota, September meant pheasant hunting. I wasn’t a very good shot, so even though I saw a lot of birds, I never bagged one.

PLAIN TALK Pheasants assembled in flocks I thought, along with ducks, geese, partridge and various other game birds.

Apparently, I was mistaken. The official terms of venery, a list of collective nouns for animals, declares pheasants abound in bouquets. I suppose all that colorful plumage does resemble a vase of flowers.

Venery, it seems, got started in 14thcentury England with William Witi, who was the official huntsman for King Edward II. His treatise proclaimed that every good knight should have names for herds, flocks and gatherings of all animals.

To get things off to a good start, he penned three different terms for animal droppings. Within a hundred years his successors had expanded the droppings list to seven. They also came up with a book on the subject, “The Boke of Albans,” which included 70 different terms for various animal herds.

I can’t imagine royal knights hunting all of these animals, but here are a few of those

listed in the book. Some terms are charming and appropriate, others not so much.

Alligators come in congregations, some sort of reptilian religious order, I suppose.

Most folks would agree that butterflies just naturally assemble in flutters, and that flamingos gather in flamboyances.

You’ll find a business of ferrets, a bloat of hippopotamuses and a coalition of cheetahs.

A group of peacocks is an ostentation.

Duck-billed platypus come in puddles, a group of wombats is a wisdom, and a flock of starlings is called a murmuration. I agree with starlings. They’ll start their fall migration flights any day now, and when several thousand birds land in my backyard it sounds like a political convention.

A group of jellyfish is a smack, which is what they sound like when they collide with a speeding motor boat. A group of crows is a murder, and geese of all kinds come in gaggles.

I don’t go pheasant hunting anymore.

After all, who wants to shoot a bouquet?

Commentary by Terry Anker As youngsters, many of us would lament what it was we might decide to surrender during a religious observation of fast and penance.

For some, it was chocolate — milk or candy. For others, it would be the intentional deprivation of a beloved activity. The PlayStation or television would be switched off for a bit. Still, in most cases, our lives functioned largely the same. We tended to replace one indulgence with another. Although one can rightly say that the reminder of the sacrifices that led to the commemoration was present, which is good, in all, we suffered little.

In a conversation with a friend who recently found his way out of a rough patch, he lamented that he “could have lost it all.” While compassion led to an empathetic interaction, it begged the question: What really might have been lost? Surely, his was more intense than not being able to have an evening glass of chocolate milk. But can we lose our family? Can we lose our property?

Can we lose our health? Can we lose our sanity? Can we lose them all?

If the world were so ordered that each hour for 10 days we were required to sacrifice something we hold dear, how would we let them go? Could we? In most instances, we identify our top priorities and claim to stick to them. Still, we spend inordinate amounts of time attending the things that we believe inconsequential. So, if we turned this game on its head and thought about what we would sacrifice if times were truly tough, what would remain after 240 such choices? PlayStation, television, chocolate milk and candy might be easy. But what of the others? Is it more about what remains than what is lost?

Spartan existence Commentary by Danielle Wilson Well, I’ve gone and done it, friends. I’ve committed to a Spartan Race, which, for those of you uncool enough to HUMOR not be in the know, is a military-style obstacle course that hip millennials do for fun. Over the course of 3 miles, would-be Spartans climb, crawl, haul, drag, jog, jump, wade, swear, scream, hyperventilate, overheat and presumably weep, surrounded by smoke, mud, rocks and barbed wire. Hoo-rah!

I mention this only because two of my teacher colleagues and I completed our first couple of workouts this past week, and I am on my third day of not being able to walk properly. Descending stairs is literally agony. I can only get off the couch by rolling onto the floor. I considered using a roller to massage my quads but the mere thought of a metal bar touching my sore legs brought me to tears. This begs the question, “Am

I too old for such nonsense or did I just overdo it?” Let’s explore.

It might be my age. I’ll be 47 come January and don’t respond to physical exertion the way I once did. Despite decent cardio and a very close relationship with Aleve, my creaky knees and achy muscles persist in their conspiracy to destroy me. But I also may have taken on too much, too soon. I was in great shape earlier this year but then decided on a summer-long fitness sabbatical. Is it really surprising that after running suicides and stadium stairs with intermittent sets of burpees and walking lunges, I am semi-hobbled? I think not.

So, we shall see. Spartan Race, here I come. Peace out.

“What’s in here?” I asked Mary Ellen as I opened another carton the movers had deposited in our new home.

Event raises opioid awareness

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Youth & Family Health Network, a Boone County organization with a mission to reduce and prevent subAWARENESS stance abuse, partnered with the Boone County Health Dept. to host an Opioid Overdose Awareness Event Sept. 12 in the Annex Building at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Lebanon.

The event was free, open to the public and featured a presentation on the effects of opioids and the rise in drug overdoses.

“In Indiana, drug overdoses have increased five-fold since 1999,” said Claire Haughton, health educator at Boone County Health Dept.

The event aimed to help residents better understand the causes of opioid overdoses

and how they can be prevented.

“If we can’t keep someone alive, they can’t recover,” said Michelle Standeford, founder of Youth & Family Health Network.

Haughton taught attendees about the effect of opioids and how to administer Narcan (naloxone), an antidote to opioid overdose.

The Boone County Health Dept. provided free naloxone distribution along with Narcan administration training. Narcan can save the life of a person who is overdosing on opiate narcotics but does not have an affect on persons who are not taking opiates.

Attendees were invited to bring in unused or outdated medications for safe disposal through a drug takeback program sponsored by the office of Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill, and decorate a luminary for loved ones lost to addiction.

Rosie’s Place to expand to Carmel

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Family is everything to Michael and Debbi Bourgerie, who launched Rosie’s Place in Noblesville in 2010 and MAIN STREET named the cafe after Debbi’s grandmother.

The couple opened their second Rosie’s Place on Main Street in Zionsville in 2014.

The success of the Zionsville restaurant has led to a third location opening in Carmel at the end of the month.

Debbi’s family has owned and operated cafeterias in St. Louis since 1970.

“The reason I named it after my grandmother was because when I saw the building in Noblesville it just reminded me of her era,” Debbi said. “It was also a tribute to my dad because Rosie was his mother. He basically taught me everything I know.”

The Zionsville restaurant was restored to its original look.

“We had a great time with the building,” Debbi said. “Everyone was excited to have

that building turned back to how it was originally. We re-did the whole storefront as it was originally designed at the turn of the century.”

The business worked with the town to make sure the building’s roots were reflected in the new design.

“On the inside we tried to keep anything we could,” Debbi said. “We took down seven layers on the wall to have the exposed brick and plaster that we have in there.”

Debbi’s sister, Sheri Amann, manages the Zionsville restaurant.

“Sheri and I grew up learning everything together,” Debbi said. “We pretty much think exactly the same way as far as running a restaurant. It makes it very easy. We’re very good partners in that way.”

Debbi said she enjoys owning a restaurant in Zionsville.

“We love it because we just fit right in,” Debbi said. “Zionsville has really welcomed us into the community. There are so many things that go on there, festivals and activities. It’s really fun.”

Indiana Ballet Conservatory’s ‘Pulse’ set for Basile Theatre performance

DANCE After a couple years of thinking about it, the Indiana Ballet Conservatory founding artistic director created “Pulse: Dance to the Beat of Your Own Drummer,” which debuted in 2012.

“Pulse” will be performed at 7 p.m.

Oct. 3 at the Basile Theatre at the Historic Atheneum, 401 E. Michigan St., Indianapolis. It hasn’t been performed in full in a few years.

The Carmel-based IBC ballet follows the evolutionary progression of a young boy, a percussionist, and a girl, a ballerina, who dream of becoming famous artists.

Yakovleva-Randall’s husband, who was a participant in the acclaimed National Association of Music Merchants percussion music show in Chicago, provides the percussion music.

“It’s a collaboration of contemporary ballet and percussion, and it’s just that journey on the way to the dream,” Yakovleva-Randall said. “My message to

the students is to never give up.”

The ballet emphasizes ways in which dance and music are intricately intertwined and the ways art inspires life.

Yakovleva-Randall said the decision was made by the board to bring back “Pulse” in the beginning of the summer.

“We usually have a show this time of year, but we didn’t have full production for two years,” said Yakovleva-Randall, who recently moved from Geist to Carmel.

IBC Executive Director Jenny Okamoto said by the time of the performance, IBC will have had 6 1/2 weeks to prepare for the show.

“The kids have been very busy,” Okamoto said.

The message is conveyed through music, dance, voiceovers and a slide show.

There are four performers for the leads at different ages. There are 35 dancers in the performance.

“It’s nice to support the Atheneum because they’ve made improvements,” Okamoto said. “It’s open-cabaret seating, so it’s a different setup.”

Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets are available at indianaballetconservatory.org.

Performance supports Indy Humane A portion of the proceeds from “Pulse” ticket sales and beverages will support Indy Humane. IBC board member Sue Ames is a volunteer with Indy Humane.

“The goal is to have an important project to each board member and to base our fundraising and outreach around that,” Okamoto said.

There will be an Indy Humane mobile adoption unit on-site.

Yakovleva-Randall has two dogs that join her at IBC. “I have three rescue dogs, so we appreciate what rescue organizations are trying to do,” Okamoto said. “It’s really nice with this fall production that we can offer it more as a giveback like we did when it was cancer research.”

Okamoto said Tito’s Vodka and Sun King are donating beverages.

“The Atheneum is pretty dog-friendly.

They actually allow dogs into their coffee shop in the lobby,” Okamoto said.

IBC holds a Halloween contest for dogs, and one is selected to appear in IBC’s “The Nutcracker” in December.

“Last year, we lucked out because we had two French bulldogs, so we got to splitcast our dogs,” Okamoto said. “I always feel like dancers and dogs go together.”

After breaking a box office record at The Cat Theatre in Carmel over Independence Day weekend, Magic Thread Cabaret is bringing its hit show “Katy Gentry: Judy Garland LIVE!” to downtown Indianapolis’ Mass Ave. Arts & Cultural District for a special engagement this Christmas season.

The District Theatre, formerly Theatre on the Square, will host a six-show run of the cabaret Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-16.

“After Katy’s success in Carmel, we’re eager for our audiences to enjoy a night of beautiful music in the intimate space of our Cabaret Stage,” stated IndyFringe Executive Director Pauline Moffat, who is managing The District Theatre.

ABA book signing set for Sept. 29

“The title of the book is, ‘We Changed the Game,’ and we did,” said former BOOK Indiana Pacers player Bob “Neto” Netolicky, a Noblesville resident.

“Today’s NBA would not be the way it is if not for the ABA.” The book, which was released earlier this year, was written by Netolicky, Richard Tinkham and Robin Miller. A book signing is set for 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 29 at the American Legion Hall, 852 W. Main St., Carmel. The book is full of stories about the league’s many characters.

“Ninety-nine percent of the books out there about the ABA are third-, fourth-, fifth-hand stories,” said Netolicky, an original Pacer who played most of his career with Indiana. “This one kind of nails it. Dick Tinkham helped start the league and was the league lawyer. Robin followed us for three or four years when we started. He was a cub reporter, so he knows the real happenings.”

“If you loved the ABA as I did or are simply curious about a fascinating slice of sports history, you will love this book,” Costas said.

Ten percent of proceeds from book sales go to the Indianapolis-based Dropping Dimes Foundation that advocates for former ABA players.

“Dropping Dimes has taken the lead and is getting involved in our pension fight with the NBA,” Netolicky said. “We’ve got some heavy hitters helping us. We have eight or nine Hall of Famers on the advisory board, guys like George Gervin, Dan Issel and Artis Gilmore. Bob Costas. Reggie Miller is on it and so is Myles Turner.”

Art Battle Fortville set for Sept. 29

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com A Facebook post by an artist friend from Phoenix about attending an event called Art Battle intrigued Libby Wyatt.

ART “She went to this really cool event, Art Battle, in Phoenix, so I looked it up and it looked awesome,” said Wyatt, who owns StoreHouse, a home goods store in Fortville. “We’re working really hard to bring the arts to Fortville. I threw it out there (as an idea) to Lacey (Willard), and that’s basically how it got started.”

Wyatt, Willard and John Kitterman are founders of Art Battle Fortville. The event, which is making its Indiana debut, features 12 artists going head-to-head during 20-minute rounds of live painting. It is set for 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 29 on Main Street in Fortville.

Proceeds will benefit the opening of a nonprofit art gallery on the first floor of the 100-year-old Carnegie library structure on Main Street.

“It’s a pretty vibrant artist scene, and we think Art Battle matches what our community is calling for in terms of art culture and music,” said Willard, a Fortville resident.

“Some of the artists we’ve invited are from Fortville, and we reserved a couple for In-

There are two rounds of six artists each competing in a vote by those in attendance.

“It’s all voted on by the attendees,” Willard said.

The winners of each round meet in the championship. The winner advances to a regional event. There are then national and international rounds.

Willard said each round takes approximately one hour.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Anna’s take: TeeJay’s Sweet Tooth has only been open a month and already customers are photographing the vibrantly colorful ice cream sandwiches and posting them on social media.

According to TeeJay’s, the ice cream shop is home to what it calls the only donut ice cream sandwich in Indiana.

The sandwich is a sight to behold.

Customers can choose two scoops out of 16 flavors to sandwich between halves of a Jack’s glazed donut and top it with one topping. I ordered the cookie dough ice cream and the cookies and cream ice cream with a donut sandwich and topped it with peanut butter crunch cereal. When assembled, the donut/ice cream concoction is heated in a waffle iron-type device for five seconds, which is enough to warm the donut but not melt the ice cream.

The mix of flavors and textures from the flaky, sweetened donut glaze to the crunch of the cereal and smoothness of the ice cream tastes heavenly. The delicious behemoth was only $5. The shop offers more than donut sandwiches. I couldn’t help but sample the Fruity Pebbles Rice Krispy sandwich with Blue’s Vanilla and Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream topped with Lucky Charms cereal. It was a delicious, colorful snack.

TeeJay’s is affordable, and it sources its ice cream from Sundae’s Homemade Ice Cream in Indianapolis. The concoctions are dessert monsters you’d expect to find at a State Fair, and they are worth breaking a diet. In addition to ice cream sandwiches, TeeJay’s sells cones, scoops and floats.

The goal was to create a timeless master bathroom design that maximized the functionality of the space.

1. The biggest change came from removing the large decked tub that took up the outside wall of the bathroom and replacing it with a smaller freestanding tub, making the space appear much more open.

2. After removing the decked tub there was room to make some minor floorplan changes, relocating the single vanity and expanding the shower.

3. The shower expansion included creating a custom-glass enclosed shower with a bench seat and detailed tile work.

4. All cabinetry was updated, and a linen tower was added to create more storage space.

5. The space was finished with wood-look luxury vinyl tile flooring, a perfect material for any bathroom!

Background Info: This early 1990s home in the Admirals Pointe neighborhood of the Geist area is home to a growing family. Overall, the owners were happy with the home but it was in need of a few updates to make it function better for the soon-to-be family of four.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The bathrooms were the first priority for the homeowners. They had plenty of space, but the layout of the master bathroom made the room feel confined. The bathroom had never been updated, so the materials and bulkheads dated the space.

Give it up for Rustic Citrus!

Mosque for the King of the World Commentary by Don Knebel Many visitors to India get to New Delhi, its current capital, but never get to nearby Old Delhi, formerly the capital TRAVEL of the powerful Mughal Empire and home to a mosque known for a single hair.

In 1628, a Mughal prince killed his royal rivals, crowned himself the fifth Mughal Emperor and gave himself the name Shah Jahan (King of the World). Three years later, Mumtaz, Shah Jahan’s favorite wife, died during the birth of their 14th child and almost immediately he began building her tomb in his capital city of Agra. In 1639, while the Taj Mahal was still unfinished, Shah Jahan moved his capital to a location 130 miles northwest of Agra, where he built a walled city along the Yamuna River named Shahjahanabad (Shah Jahan’s City).

In 1644, Shah Jahan ordered construction of an imposing mosque to serve his new capital. Five thousand artisans worked for six years building what became known as Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque), usually

considered the largest mosque in India.

The mosque features two 130-foot tall sandstone minarets, three large marble domes and a 4-acre courtyard for 25,000 worshippers.

Today, Shahjahanabad is known as Old Delhi, which is, depending on your point of view, either one of the noisiest and most chaotic places on earth or one of the most vibrant and fascinating. The Jama Masjid, at the end of hectic Chandni Chowk, is among the area’s most popular sites, open to the public except during daily prayers from noon to 1:30 p.m. For a fee, visitors can climb the 130 narrow steps inside the southern minaret to get a view of all of Old Delhi and the most important buildings of New Delhi to the west. Many visitors leave Jama Masjid unaware that it contains what is said to be a red hair from Muhammad’s beard.

I wish Rustic Citrus was the name of a band I played in back in college. We would have probably been GRAMMAR GUY some kind of folk/ funk fusion, with banjo, mandolin and an entire horn section. I would have played cowbell and sung in the chanting sections of select songs. But, alas, I wasn’t in a band in college; “rustic” and “citrus” are simply two different anagrams for my first name.

Word nerds like you probably already know this, but an anagram is a word, phrase or name with the letters rearranged to spell something else, like “debit card” and “bad credit.”

Anagrams go all the way back to Ancient Greece, first used by either Pythagoras in the sixth century B.C. or by the poet Lycophron in the third century B.C. But my favorite example of anagram nerdiness in history took place long after the Greeks geeked out on switching letters around.

In the 17th century, King Louis XIII enjoyed anagrams so much that he hired an official royal anagrammatist named Thomas Billon to entertain his court with the clever rear-

ranging of their names in amusing or mystical ways. Billon was the combination of a jester and obsessive word scrambler. For the record, if anyone’s hiring, that sounds like an awesome job for me.

I have some favorite anagrams. For instance, “stifle” is an anagram of “itself.”

In Oklahoma (my home state), two cities on the opposite end of the state, “Altus” and “Tulsa,” are anagrams of each other.

The brand name Spandex was made by rearranging the letters of “expands.” And, I don’t want to play favorites here, but an anagram for Presbyterians is “best in prayer” (and also “Britney Spears”).

Finally, “eleven plus two” equals “twelve plus one.” Don’t let that blow your mind too much. And — don’t worry — I’m not going to change the name of my column to Anagrammatist Guy, although I am considering the pseudonym Mr. Ray Gugam. Is Curtis Honeycutt “hectic unto yurts?” I’ll let you decide.
