Hoosier Village continues building blitz with Cedarwood

BCSO punishes jail staff

Hoosier Village broke ground on its Cedarwood expansion Sept. 18. Cedarwood will be a three-story building with 80 one- and twobedroom apartments.

GROWTH “Cedarwood is a $20 million project and the latest in a building blitz here at Hoosier Village to meet the demands,” Hoosier Village Executive Director Mindy Kantz said. “We have a robust waiting list, and that’s partly due to the fact we offer things other senior living communities can’t provide – a sprawling, walkable campus surrounded by natural beauty and a variety of living options on campus. Our 300-acre campus features a new Village park, pavilions, walkable paths, nature paths, a dog park and a lot of mature trees.

“These amenities and services. along with our continuum of care levels. are provided at Hoosier Village.”

Cedarwood will connect to Hoosier Village’s two restaurants, Roosevelt’s and Green Onion.

Hoosier Village is an affiliate of BHI Senior Living, an Indiana-based nonprofit. BHI Senior Living President and CEO John Dattilo also spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony.

“We’re going to have to stop building because we are running out of trees and wood products to name our buildings after,” Datillo said. “I have the opportunity to travel around the country and visit a lot of these types of retirement communities. I will tell you Hoosier Village is special and it’s special in a lot of ways, not just because it’s a large campus, not just because of the wonderful people who work here and provide services to you as residents, but it’s really unique in the way it presents itself. We do have a lot of greenspace. It’s a very active community. We want to try to take advantage of this space that we have.

“We want to be able to provide top-notch services and amenities to our customers. We are very excited to be a part of the Town of Zionsville. I think that’s something else that makes us special.”

A Boone County Sheriff’s Office internal investigation has found that Corrections Officer Jeff Godzeski acted negligently when an inmate JAIL went into cardiac arrest while at the Boone County Jail Aug. 10.

The inmate, 58-year-old Prince McGoy of Indianapolis, died a short time later at the hospital.

Godzeski was terminated Aug. 12.

According to the BCSO, Godzeski violated a BCSO guideline which states, “No Member shall, in the performance of his or her duties, display reluctance or inability to properly perform his assigned tasks, act in a manner tending to bring discredit upon himself of the Office, fail to assume responsibility or fail to exercise diligence, intelligence, and interest in the pursuit of his duties.”

Besides Godzeski’s termination, Corrections Officer Luke Cody was placed on a three-day, non-paid suspension for the same violation for his actions during the medical call. A third, unnamed corrections officer was praised for her actions during the time of the incident.

McGoy went into cardiac arrest after complaining of chest pain in the jail’s A block. McGoy’s health declined while he was speaking with corrections officers, and jail staff began CPR. An AED was administered, and McGoy’s pulse returned. Medics arrived and transported McGoy to Witham Hospital. He was later transported to St. Vincent Hospital due to continued complications.

At approximately 5 a.m. Aug. 11, the BCSO was notified that McGoy had died.

McGoy had turned himself in Aug. 8 and was being held on a $1,000 bond for a probation violation.

No criminal charges have been filed against jail staff, and the BCSO also confirmed a civil suit has not been filed.

Datillo said Cedarwood is planned to open in 2021. Hoosier Village will begin taking prereservations early next year.

Inclusivity is a focus for Zionsville Community Schools

By Jarred Meeks • news@currentzionsville.com On Sept. 11, a Columbia University professor posed the question of how to make sure all school children in the community feel they belong at Zionsville schools.

Cornelius Minor works with teachers, EDUCATION school leaders and community-based organizations to advocate literacy reform that promotes equality in cities throughout the United States and around the world.

Minor spent time working with Zionsville teachers this summer, listening to concerns they had about diversity and inclusion in their classrooms.

He presented some of his insights to the community as part of the Zionsville Community School’s “Everyone Belongs” series at the Zionsville Community High School Performing Arts Center.

“For so many of our young people, school is a place where they feel similar feelings, where they feel like (they) have to mute or erase or silence essential parts of my humanity in order to fit in here,” Minor said. “So, a lot of my work this year has been driven by one question, ‘How do I make school a place where you don’t have to erase yourself?’”

Minor said girls are often under represented in many science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

“We know children of color, in schools, specifically, continue to be suspended at exponential rates compared to

their white peers,” Minor said.

Addressing such issues has become the primary focus of Minor’s mission.

In an effort to tackle “systems of oppression,” Minor wants to instill specific strategic values in Zionsville and other communities. One of the values is what Minor calls “aspirational discomfort,” the notion that to be better, communities have to step outside of what feels comfortable.

He also pushed for inclusivity, empathy and flexibility when talking to students. For example, Minor emphasized the importance of making an effort to talk to kids three times. Some children, Minor said, won’t open up the first time a teacher tries to address them. It might take up to three times.

And if that doesn’t work, Minor said he recommends sending another adult to talk to the student, up to another three times if necessary, to create an environment where children feel adults are taking an active interest in their life and education.

Minor also said real change can come when parents and community members advocate for access and equality for children who aren’t necessarily their own.

“It’s really easy to think about our kids, the kids we know,” Minor said. “One really easy way to think about crafting a more inclusive Zionsville is to simply ask yourself the question, ‘Who are the kids here who don’t have parents like me who would show up and advocate for them?’”

Town Council votes to regulate golf carts on certain streets

By Jarred Meeks news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Town Council unanimously passed an ordinance regulating golf carts on certain town GOVERNEMENT streets.

The council has heard residents voice their desire to operate golf carts on public streets for some time. On Sept. 3, the council took measures to ensure transportation would be regulated to address potential traffic and safety hazards.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, the ordinance will only allow those with a valid driver’s license to drive a golf cart on approved streets within the urban district of Zionsville. And starting Jan. 2, 2020, the Zionsville Police Dept. will issue registration permits for golf carts that meet town requirements, according to a press release. Violators will be subject to fines.

Golf carts will be prohibited on certain streets, including major thoroughfares, such as 106th Street, 116th Street, County Road 300 South, West 96th Street, County Road 975 East, Zionsville Road, Whitestown Road, Willow Road, Willow Street and Ford Road, in addition to other streets, when the ordinance is implemented.

Town Council member Jason Plunkett expressed support for the ordinance.

“As a member of the Town Council, I have received questions regarding golf carts

from residents and neighborhood associations. Those questions range from the details of other community ordinances, and state ordinances, to the variation in laws for urban and rural areas in Zionsville. This ordinance allows us to safely regulate the operation of golf carts by licensed drivers,” Plunkett said. “It will be reviewed annually to determine if any changes need to be made. Golf carts are becoming more prevalent in neighborhoods and with the future development of Holliday Farms this provides guidance for both golf cart owners and our local law enforcement.”

To register a golf cart, residents must pay an annual, recurring registration fee of $100 for each golf cart. Revenue generated from the fees will be deposited into the town’s police operating fund to offset costs of kickstarting and maintaining the program.

Golf cart operators also must have proof of financial responsibility.

Cart drivers also must obey all driver’s licensing requirements and Indiana traffic laws, such as yielding the right-of-way to pedestrians and bicyclists, and not transport more passengers than the cart was designed to carry.

All carts must have headlights, brake lights, a rearview mirror, a slow-moving vehicle sign and a horn. They also must stay to the far right of the road and yield to passing cars as soon as it’s possible to do so safely.

Commentary by Feras Mash It seems everywhere we look or every time we turn on the news, another company got hacked and millions of TECH volumes of personal information got stolen by thieves to be traded to other thieves. We then scurry to try and save our identities and accounts from being compromised and have to deal with all the frustrations that go with those activities.

There are ways one can delete his or her

identity online and erase any web presence 99.9 percent of the time with an ongoing online monitoring. Recommendations are to: • Delete or deactivate your shopping accounts, social and web networks.

• Remove or deactivate your data at collection sites.

• Scour the internet for your name

by Googling yourself and then send requests to websites that have your information.

• Delete any search results pointing to

you through Google.

• Physically delete your email accounts.

As you can tell, this is not easy and can be time-consuming. Many companies have popped up to provide these types of services, and they range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

So, what can you do to erase your identity? Follow the aforementioned recommendations and/or contact the credit bureaus and place monitoring on your file — including freezes. Then contact private

companies, like DeleteMe, which provide the niche service of online erasure and check the different ways they can remove your online Identity. Finally, you can hire your own hacker to do all this for you.

Book inspires reflections of the past I just finished reading a novel by B.A. Shapiro that flooded me with memories. The story is called “The MuralPLAIN TALK ist,” and it deals with a whole bunch of stuff that happened in the 1930s and ’40s.

It’s a work of fiction woven into the factual fabric of the Great Depression, the Works Projects Administration, the lives of real artists in America and both real and fictitious Jewish refugees in Hitler’s Europe.

The WPA was established to provide work for Americans who were unable to find jobs during the Depression. Engineering crews built roads and dams. Foresters like my dad set up Civilian Conservation Corps camps to fight fires and plant trees in our national forests.

And famous artists such as Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner were paid $15 a month to paint murals to hang in public libraries and office buildings long before they became celebrated painters and founders of the American School of Abstract Expressionist Art. I saw some of these works of art only years later, mostly in the halls of the Missouri State Capitol building in Jefferson City.

One particular painting has always intrigued me. Like many other WPA paintings, it depicts the growth of a new nation. This particular painting shows a train coming out of a tunnel. The magic is, if you stand to the left of the painting, the train is coming toward you. Move to the right side, and the train is moving away. How did the artist do that?

Dad set up CCC camps in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where the mosquitoes could eat you alive in the summer, and in winter the water would freeze in our tea kettle.

We lived in government houses or in places Dad rented near the camps. By Depression standards, he had a good job. Mom knew this, of course, and never hesitated to make a sandwich for some homeless wanderer looking for work. Often, a half dozen of

these unfortunate men would line up every day on our driveway.

I started my artistic career back then, too, with crayons and scrap paper my dad picked up from a local printing company.

Mom kept many of these “masterpieces” for years. Mercifully, when Dad retired and they moved to Arizona, most of them vanished.

Things I learned from those days include the realization that survival and achievement are closely related, and that both demand only the will to never give up. Shapiro’s book says it all.

Maze honors Trent’s legacy

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Tyler Trent’s courageous spirit has been honored in many unique ways.

Dull’s Tree Farm found a new way with a corn maze at its Boone County FALL farm in Thorntown.

Trent, a Carmel resident and Purdue University superfan, died Jan. 1 after a battle with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

Dull and his wife, Dana, met at Purdue and are 2012 graduates. Dull’s father, Tom, and mother, Kerry, also are Purdue graduates. They share ownership of the business and Dull serves as manager of the pumpkin harvest.

“We have been following Tyler’s story closely and had my sister-in-law go through her own cancer battle,” Dull said. “We thought this would be possibly a way to keep his story and legacy going.”

Dana’s sister, Jenae Blasdel, is in remission from brain cancer.

The Tyler Trent Cancer Research Endowment funds cancer research at the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research.

“We touched base with the Trent family and got their blessing on it and went from there,” Dull said.

Trent’s book, “The Upset,” will be sold at the farm with all proceeds going to his foundation. Trent co-authored the book with John Driver, with proceeds benefitting pediatric cancer research. Trent drew national attention after ESPN featured his story during the Purdue football team’s upset of No. 2 Ohio State last year.

Dull said there will be donation buckets around the farm.

“We, as a farm, are going to match up to $1,000 each weekend,” Dull said.

Three of the five weekends’ donations will go toward the Trent endowment. One weekend it will go to Peyton Manning’s Children’s Hospital and the other weekend to Riley Hospital for Children.

The Pumpkin Patch and maze will open Sept. 28 and run every weekend though Oct. 27. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.

PURDUE STUDENT GATE HONORS TRENT At Purdue’s home football opener Sept. 7, which would have been Trent’s 21st birthday, the Tyler Trent Student Gate debuted. His family attended the pregame dedication ceremony, which included Purdue President Mitch Daniels.

Purdue’s captains are now called Tyler Trent Team Captains. Coach Jeff Brohm changed the name in April to honor Trent, who served as an honorary team captain last year.

Boilermakers wide receiver Rondale Moore said both are fitting tributes.

“He was a great friend of mine and we ended up texting every day and it became a really good friendship,” Moore said. “He was a fighter and the definition of a Boilermaker.”

Natural healing New halotherapy business offers holistic options

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com After unsuccesfully trying to land a full-time teaching job, Zionsville resident Shauna Hale decided to pursue an alternate career path.

COVER STORY “I was a kindergarten teacher and decided after many, many years of covering peoples’ maternity leaves and medical leaves, I was doing all these leaves for people as a teacher, but nothing ever got me to a full-time teaching job,” Hale said. “I ended up not getting a job, so I started to look within myself and said, ‘Maybe this isn’t the path I’m meant to go.’”

The path she followed eventually led to opening her own business, Salt for your Soul, a holistic therapy center, in Zionsville. She was drawn to holistic medicine after her mother contracted stomach cancer.

“We started looking at holistic treatments for my mom, and that kind of started our path on the holistic side,” Hale said. “My mom did some teas and we got some really great results from the tea, then the doctor told her she needed to go off the tea and she did, and then my mom passed away but the tea was working. So, to me, every day I think if we had kept her on the tea, maybe she’d be here.”

Hale’s mother died in 2005. She began looking deeper into holistic treatments for common ailments. She and her husband, Darren, often had sinus infections and began visiting the Salt Cave in Lawrence three years ago for relief.

“We ended up really liking the benefits of the salt,” Shauna Hale said.

Salt therapy dates back to the 1800s, when a Polish physician noticed salt mine workers seldom got sick and had exceptionally healthy skin. After conducting research, he attributed both qualities to the salt.

In March, the couple purchased space for Salt for Your Soul at 3802 W. 96th St. and opened it earlier in the summer. The business offers a Himalayan salt room with halotherapy and a halogenerator. It also sells health products and has space for support groups and a flotation tank. “(The flotation tank) is for sensory deprivation,” Shauna Hale said. “You put earplugs in your ears so you’re cutting off the hearing, but as you’re floating on top of the water, you are morphing with the water. It’s interesting. You can’t tell where your body is and where the water begins. It has magnesium in it, and we are all magnesium-deficient. Magnesium helps with cramps and headaches and joint pain.”

The flotation tank holds 100 gallons of water and 450 pounds of Epsom salts.

So far, business has been brisk.

“It’s been good. We have had some walk-ins and referrals already, and so everybody has raved about it and it’s been great,” said Darren Hale, a fifth-grade teacher at Zionsville West Middle School.

Salt for Your Soul is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Prices are

Ultimatum warriors

Many have trained for years, studied a craft and experienced much through trial and error. We look to them for insight. And then, there are the other authorities. They opine endlessly about all manner and topic. Their wisdom, it seems, is boundless. Alas, the root of this tremendous insight springs from some genetic font. They aren’t trained, or especially experienced, but they are all too willing to claim to be.

It is said that the most dangerous among us are not those who know nothing or have never read a book. Neither are those who know much and have read extensively.

The greatest risk comes from those who know something, have read one thing and have extrapolated this piece into believing they see the entire puzzle. “Name That Tune” pitted contestants on 1970s television to identify a song using as few notes as possible. Suffice it to say, a single note, other than the occasional wild guess, never could prevail – much like trying to guess the word intended here with simply the letter “t.”

Well, know-it-alls are not new to the world. But social media has fueled their intolerance. Expressing a point of view about complex global or interpersonal issues, extolling 25 or 30 words to round-out their epistle, they, like some ultimatum warrior, then lay down the gauntlet. If any reader doesn’t understand and agree summarily, then they are no longer a friend. Really? Lifelong supporters, colleagues and the folks who gave us life are dismissed in an instant. Doesn’t it all seem a little excessive (even needy)?

All hail the superhero Commentary by Danielle Wilson What a week I had, friends! I was basically a hero on two separate occasions, thanks to my keen maternal and intuitive superpowers.

My first amazing feat was HUMOR consoling a student actively vomiting in my classroom trash can while simultaneously reviewing how the Declaration of Independence was nearly defeated. I know, right? I have gifts! Oscillating between “You’re OK, get it all up” and “Remember, the South wanted no mention of slavery,” I transfixed students with my dual message: “I care for you all like you were my own kids” and “Pay attention, this is important!” Of course, it might have been the barfing that was riveting their eyes to me, but still. I was a veritable Wonder Woman of the multitask.

My second foray into the world-saving business came a few days later. I stopped to offer help after watching a car drive straight into a metal railing. As I approached the

vehicle, I saw the driver banging his steering wheel, clearly frustrated but seemingly unhurt. Another bystander and I shouted at the same time, “Are you alright?” The driver emerged from the smoking wreck, responded, “Yeah, I’m fine,” and then walked off. Just walked away. Perplexed and trusting my gut that something was wrong, I called 911 to relay the details (I make a terrible witness, BTW. The only thing I was positive about was that the car was red. Or maybe orange.

Light brown?). That afternoon, I learned the red/orange/brown automobile had been stolen! I’d sensed a crime in play and interrupted grand larceny! Ka-pow!

So sleep easy, citizens of Indy Suburbia.

Editor, Thirty-two years ago, I watched as Ryan White prepared to enter Hamilton Heights Middle School. Ryan, a hemophiliac, had contracted HIV while being treated for that disease. For a variety of reasons at the national, state and local levels, many people were misinformed about this deadly disease. It was 1987, and people were scared.

When people are scared, people can say and do irrational things.

My family and I, along with the nation, huddled around the TV that evening and watched Ryan’s first day at school. I’ll never forget in a truly made-for-TV moment that girl running up to Ryan and hugging him before he even got to the doors.

As the days turned into weeks, we all learned a lot about HIV and AIDS. As the weeks turned into months, Ryan turned into the face of AIDS education. A few years later, he died. As a kid myself at that time, I was always amazed at his poise, strength and his positive attitude in the face of such incredibly overwhelming circumstances.

Ryan showed the world that through conversation, caring and compassion we can learn, heal and move forward as a society.

I hope we, as a nation, can continue to remember and teach these lessons to future generations. Thank you, Ryan.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Some spam messages I receive on a regular basis are for products I can’t disclose in this newspaper. However, HUMOR I started receiving unusual emails about unmentionables, and I am going to mention those: Wonderbra, Super-Lift Bra and my favorite, Bra Genie.

Why was a guy like me getting stuff like this? I tried red-flagging keywords so this type of advertising would go directly to my spam folder, but all it did was block some really good coupons for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

While discussing this issue with friends, I found it impossible to avoid immature plays on words, like: “I want to keep abreast of this problem,” or, “Who are the boobs sending me this junk?” There is nothing more alluring than easy double entendres.

I called my techie friend and told him I had this problem that was staring me smack in the face. He responded, “Dick, it sounds like you need some support.”

“Oh no, Kevin, now you’re doing it!” He couldn’t help me, so it was time to figure this out myself. Not long ago, I wrote an essay about how I was trying to get fit. I mentioned I was in relatively good shape, except that my chest needed a little development.

The column appeared in this newspaper, on Facebook, and then all the search engines. Apparently, my observation that I was unhappy with my chest found its way to brassiere makers who added me to their database of people displeased with their upper half.

As I was writing this column, I printed all the spam ads so I could reference them easily. When Mary Ellen was poking around my office, she saw the pages on my desk and assumed that either I thought she needed a Bra Genie, or I wanted to order one for myself. Neither alternative was going to lead to a conversation I wanted to have.

When I explained to Mary Ellen why I was getting spammed, I admitted I had looked at several of the bra ads. I also vowed to stop making childish puns. It was good to get all that off my chest.

Carmel couple’s artwork placed in Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com After 27 years in the community banking world, Julie Kern was ready for a new challenge.

ARTISTS So, the longtime Carmel resident retired 13 years ago and soon began to explore her love of art.

Yet, she confessed she was shy to make the transition to becoming an artist.

“When you put that art in public, it’s like baring your soul. It’s not an easy thing to do,” Kern said.

So, she began by creating art under her childhood nickname, “Satch,” which was derived from her maiden name, Satchwill.

“I’ll hide behind the name and no one will know who it is,” she said. “After a while I got a little bolder. I could show my face and claim my work.”

Now, her work and her husband Ron Kern’s photos have been placed in the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart.

Their work was donated to the museum

by Dr. Steven Conant of Indianapolis, a well-known collector of modern and contemporary fine art.

Julie Kern said being included in the museum will be “a positive spark of creativity that will carry my art forward.”

Julie Kern’s piece in the museum collection will be “Origins of Medical Practice, 2007,” a mixed media assemblage of found objects. Ron Kern will have two photographs from his New Mexico collection in the museum display.

Julie Kern’s primary medium is assemblage, putting pieces together to create artwork.

“The pieces are recycled materials, so I reuse wood, metal, paper and nails,” she said.

Julie Kern, a North Central High School graduate, has a gallery, Satch Art Space, at Circle City Industrial Park, 1125 E. Brookside Ave., Suite C14, Indianapolis. It is open for First Fridays of each month from 6 to 9 p.m., and special events and by appointment. “They are bringing in artists to complement the furniture,” Julie Kern said.

Ron Kern said he and others have encouraged his wife to paint more.

“She painted a lot more in the first part of her career change and she sold a ton of paintings,” he said.

Ron Kern, a golf course architect, graduated from Carmel High School in 1976. His father, Gary Kern, was a civic engineer who designed subdivisions in Carmel and later became a golf course architect. Gary Kern and Bill Diddel designed Brookshire Golf Club in Carmel.

Ron Kern has been interested in photography for more than 30 years. He was

inspired by photographer David Michael Kennedy, who became a mentor. Kennedy’s photo graces Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” album cover.

“When I saw David’s photographs of New Mexico, I saw light in a way that I never saw light,” he said. “It completely opened up my mind with photography and light. There is something about how he saw and captured light that blew my mind.”

Ron Kern primarily takes photos for his own enjoyment now, occasionally exhibiting at his wife’s gallery. The couple has a collection of James Spencer Russell, an Indiana-born artist.

Ron Kern has authored a book, “Style Elegance and Wit: Rediscovering the Life and Art of James Spencer Russell,” and the couple created a website, heartofjamesspencerrussell.wordpress.com/category/ history/. Russell died in 2000.

Chief David Haboush and Fox59 reporter Sherman Burdette also will participate.

Proceeds benefit ATI and the Student Theater Education Program.

Youth to appear in ‘Ragtime’

MUSICAL “Sometimes I have to sing some really high notes, and she is a Latvian immigrant,” Pfeiffer said.

The Westfield Intermediate School fifthgrader portrays Little Girl in “Ragtime,” which runs Sept. 27 to Oct 13 at Footlite Musicals, 1847 N. Alabama St, Indianapolis.

The musical is based on the novel about three families in pursuit of the American dream in the early 20th century.

Pfeiffer, who turns 11 the day before the show begins, said she likes that her character “is constantly moving and dancing.”

Dancing is what she said she looks forward to most about the production.

Indianapolis resident Lincoln Everitt, 11, plays Little Boy. “I wanted to play this role because I’ve already played the same role at Carmel Community Players,” the St. Richard’s Episcopal fifth-grader said. “I know Paula (Phelan) the director, and she directed another show I was in.”

Background: Water damage from flooding prompted the remodeling of this Zionsville basement, built in 1988 in Coventry Ridge subdivision.

THE INSPIRATION The design was inspired by the homeowner’s treasured family photos, which showed grandparents and extended family members enjoying parties in their 1950s basement.

THE SOLUTION 1. Gorgeous teal blue cabinetry provides storage at the entertainment center and bar.

Destroying Hatshepsut’s soul Commentary by Don Knebel Hatshepsut was a female ruler of Egypt.

Her successors set out to destroy not only memories of her but her very existence.

Hatshepsut was born in 1508 TRAVEL B.C., the daughter of Pharaoh Thutmose I. Upon the death of Thutmose I, his son, Thutmose II, became pharaoh. When Thutmose II died in 1479 B.C., his 2-year-old son, Thutmose III, became pharaoh, with his aunt Hatshepsut as his regent. After a few years, Hatshepsut declared herself pharaoh, dressing as a man, wearing a false beard strapped around her head and engaging in a massive building program unmatched for centuries.

Hatshepsut erected four huge obelisks at Karnak, the enormous temple complex near modern Luxor, two of which were 97 feet tall, each carved from a single block of granite. She built the Red Chapel of red quartzite to hold the barque (boat) priests used to transport the statue of the god Amun around the complex. She built the Palace of Ma’at, the Egyptian goddess of truth, justice and order, one wall of which included an image of Hatshepsut being anointed pharaoh

by the gods.

When Hatshepsut died in about 1458 B.C., Thutmose III again became pharaoh.

He destroyed the Red Chapel, replacing it with one honoring him. Believing that Hatshepsut’s soul, or ka, could survive in the afterlife in her images, Thurmose III (or perhaps his successors) destroyed or obliterated images and statues of Hatshepsut, including her image in the Palace of Ma’at.

Successors removed Hatshepsut’s name from lists of pharaohs. As a result, Hatshepsut’s extraordinary reign was unknown until the 20th century, when archaeologists reconstructed it from images overlooked for destruction. The Red Chapel at Karnak has been reconstructed from its original materials. The obliterated image in Karnak’s Palace of Ma’at provides evidence of the still unknown motives of her successors to destroy her afterlife existence.

Some people take things literally. Kleptomaniacs take things, literally.

Literalists aren’t GRAMMAR GUY fans of idioms.

Idioms are phrases with figurative meanings; they aren’t intended to be taken literally. Believe it or not, my friend, Byron, tends to take things literally; so, when I suggest we “paint the town red” on Friday night, he goes to his garage to get his paint rollers.

Idioms are designed to express a sentiment, feeling or an idea. If I said, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” I’m not claiming to be a chicken or egg farmer; instead, I’m suggesting that you shouldn’t count on something before it has come into reality. In the same way, when I say, “Curiosity killed the cat,” I’m certainly not suggesting that NASA’s Mars rover murdered a cat; I’m suggesting that it’s dangerous to be too curious.

An idiom is a type of figurative language. The point of figurative language is to make your speech or writing more impactful or effective. Other types of figurative language include euphemisms, meta-

phors, similes, hyperbole, personification and my favorite puns. In fact, idioms exist in most languages. This isn’t just another tricky English construction that makes our language hard to learn.

One of my favorite idioms is, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” While I don’t agree literally with this statement, its figurative truth holds up to scrutiny. We shouldn’t judge people at face value; instead, we should look “under the hood,” so to speak, and get to know them better before we draw any conclusions.

The only literal thing that costs an arm and a leg is going swimming with hungry sharks. As an idiom, however, something that costs “an arm and a leg” is merely incredibly expensive. The same idea goes for “robbing the cradle.” You’re not stealing a baby, but instead, when someone says this she means that you are marrying someone significantly younger than you.

TOURISM, HOSPITALITY, AND EVENT PLANNING, PROGRAM MANAGER/INSTRUCTOR This is a part-time teaching position. Classroom hours will vary each 8 week term and will average between 3 to 5 instructional hours per day. Classes meet every day.

Position Summary/Basic Function: Instruction: Provide classroom instruction in course designed to prepare students to work in the travel and hospitality field. Courses should be taught in an effective manner which promotes a quality educational environment.

Prepare appropriate and meaningful classroom activities that meet or exceed the course objectives to ensure appropriate skills for student success.

Adhere to a set curriculum and course objectives Maintain all student records, attendance, grades and other documentation.

Attend faculty meetings and in-service training as directed.

Maintain scheduled office hours.

Comply with any and all school policies.

Program Manager: In addition, this position also requires: Monitor student progress (academic and attendance), tutor students, if necessary Create, plan, lead Advisory Board for your specific program Collaborate with Director of Education on textbook, software selection and curriculum development Perform all administrative duties of the program Qualifications: Required: Three years of in-field experience required in any combination of the following general areas: Event Planning Travel and Tourism Hotel Management Hospitality/Concierge Services Airline Customer Service B. Associate’s Degree, or higher, in tourism/hospitality related area **Official transcripts will be required if hired C. Preferred qualification: Prior teaching experience.

Salary: $30 per teaching hour. Hours average 10-20 per week.
