Light at Oak, Kissel coming soon

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The intersection of Oak Street and Kissel Road should have a traffic light by the end of the year, town officials said. transportation The goal is to complete the project in 2016, according to Lance Lantz, superintendent of Zionsville’s Street and Stormwater Dept. The traffic signal and several other improvements are moving forward thanks to savings on other projects and a $1 million grant from the state.

“We had good pricing on other projects, so we have identified money that’s now available this year,” Lantz said. “We’re capitalizing on that savings to move forward on these projects ahead of what we had planned to do.”

The other project ahead of schedule is the expansion of the pedestrian crossing at the Oak Street and Ford Road intersection. New sidewalks will be constructed to connect to existing

ones in the area along with pedestrian signals.

Four projects will be funded in part by a $1 million state grant.

“It’s a $1 million gift,” Lantz said. “The grant that we were awarded is the maximum that any community can receive.”

The grant stipulates that the town match the amount, which will be done with money not yet budgeted from the special local option income tax fund.

One of the projects funded through the grant — the repaving of County Road 975 — should be completed within the next month. Three others will begin next year: the reconstruction of Village Walk Drive, a roundabout at Mulberry and Ford roads and the resurfacing and repair of the old 334 corridor. The 334 project involves the repair of sidewalks and curbs and extends along Oak, First and Sycamore streets from Zionsville’s Town Hall to Lion’s Park.

Walgreen’s theft – Zionsville police are searching for a suspect who allegedly stole Sudafed from the Walgreen’s at Oak Street and Ford Road shortly after 8 p.m.

Sept. 13. Police said the man asked for Sudafed from behind the counter and ran off with it.

The suspect is described as a white male, 6’0” and 150 pounds, with a Mohawk haircut wearing a black shirt and black pants. Police said he appeared to be driving a black mid2000s Audi A6. Anyone with information is asked to contact the ZPD at 317-873-5967.

Name change – Crystal’s Behavior Systems, an autism services provider, will change its name to Collaborative Behavior Solutions Sept. 24. The name change will reflect the company’s success in bringing together a growing staff of educators and specialists to work with those on the autism spectrum.

ZCS funding down, growth up

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsviile.com For the inaugural State of the Schools address, Zionsville Community Schools Superintendent Scott Robison Education shared the where, why and what of ZCS. Addressing school funding, Robison said that ZCS is the state’s lowest funded school system. In 2009, the state provided $5,696 for each student in the school system, an amount that dropped to $4,961 in 2015 resulting in a cumulative funding loss of $49.6 million to the district.

“Our massive growth continues,” said Robison, who reported more than 7,000 students are enrolled in ZCS with more than 1,000 staff members. That number is projected to grow to 8,475 students in 2025, excluding preschool, according to projections from the Kelley School of business analysis.

With 1.6 million square feet of buildings for ZCS, the school board is considering ways to accommodate growth in a debt-neutral way to maintain a pledge made several years ago not to undertake new debt for construction.

Robison said that helping kids be more resilient will be a focus of the schools moving forward with a “human capital campaign” to

help kids succeed with self-help and balance.

Robison’s address was bookended by Tracy Phillips, executive director of the Zionsville Education Foundation, who announced that in May ZEF gave its one millionth dollar to ZCS, and Zionsville Community High School senior Katie Hamori, who shared the benefits she has derived from the school system in pursuing her educational dreams.

Students to run for funds

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsviile.com Combining healthy living with raising money for local schools, the sixth annual Jog-a-Thon takes place at all Zionsville Jog-a-thon elementary schools Sept.

“It’s a way to combine fitness and healthy living and fundraising,” said Anne Steinberg, cochair of Pleasant View Elementary’s Jog-a-Thon.

“It’s win-win across the board.”

Students raise funds by jogging laps on a course at each school. Students ask family and friends for a flat donation or for donations based upon completed laps. This year, 2,858 students between preschool and fourth grade will participate.

“I believe it’s successful because each of the schools has their own spin on it, which works in their own school market,” Steinberg said. She said that some schools center the event around a theme and others focus on classroom or school competitions.

“It enables all students and teachers to hang onto it and embrace it and go for it each year,” she said.

Last year, Pleasant View Elementary, the largest of the five elementary schools, raised $34,500 for the school’s Parent Teacher Orga-

nization to be used for enrichment materials, grade level grants, field trip transportation, art department needs and various other wellness projects.

“The longer we do it the more people understand the goals of it,” said Steinberg, noting an increase in corporate sponsorship by 25 percent this year compared to last year.

“We really appreciate these people taking part,” she said. ”We are thankful that they continue to keep our elementary schools top of mind.”

Watch pockets hang in there Commentary by Ward Degler I have at least a dozen pairs of blue jeans.

Some date back to the last ice age and for some reason have shrunk so much in the waist I can’t zip them up. plain talk Some have holes in the knees, probably from excessive hard work. I use them for mowing the lawn or when I want to look way-too-cool.

Some have holes in the pockets, and a couple are worn out in the backside. I probably work hard sitting down, too.

I even have a couple pair of antique bell bottoms. Think ice age there, too. Some of my jeans are dark blue while others are light-colored because, as the label says, they have been “stone-washed.” What does that even mean? Is there a creek behind the jeans factory where workers lather up new pairs of jeans and work them over with stones, pioneer-fashion?

All my jeans have one thing in common: they all have watch pockets. I’m not sure why.

My dad carried a pocket watch back in the 1930s and 40s. Dad gave me the broken ones to “tinker with.” He carried his watch in his watch pocket.

But by the time I was in high school, dad

had graduated to wristwatches, Timexes, mostly, that “took a licking and kept on ticking.” Just about everybody started wearing wristwatches by the 1950s, and the pocket watch slipped into dusty obscurity.

I’ve asked around and no one seems to know why watch pockets persist in a pocket watch vacuum. The jeans companies could save a lot of money by dropping them. They’ve already cut costs by eliminating two belt loops.

I’m not complaining, just mildly puzzled.

After all, I use my watch pockets for spare change and my pocket knife in those jeans that have worn-out pockets.

I don’t see pocket watches coming back any time soon. Even wristwatches are vanishing nowadays with the continued surge in smartphones. And now the way-too-cool crowd is wearing all kinds of electronic doodads that forecast the weather, report football scores and keep us up to date on the number of steps we take in a day.

To try to get out of that comfort zone cover story of painting florals and animals, the SullivanMunce Cultural Center executive director took an eight-week class for portraits and figures at the center.

“I thought I was going to hate it,” Young said. “I thought, ‘This is going to be torture,’ but I made myself do it. I realized I loved doing it.”

Less than three years later, the Zionsville resident now has her art work on display at SullivanMunce, 225 W. Hawthorne St., Zionsville. The Pose and Effect exhibit began Sept. 9 with a reception and continues to Nov. 2. Everything in the show is from 2014 to 2016. There are more than 100 pieces in the exhibit.

“There are 37 framed pieces, and the remainder are matted and sleeved,” Young said.

Some of the paintings have been sold already. All of the others are for sale, except for a portrait she did of her father, Grover Buckner of Anderson.

Young used to paint with acrylic and oil. She is now using charcoal, pastel and conte (a compressed charcoal).

“I love it, because it’s more immediate,” she said.

Young also uses sepia, white and black India ink, in drawings.

“I still do a few things with floral, but mostly I focus on the people,” Young said. “I may get back to it. I don’t know what my next phase will be. I’ll keep doing people. I think drawing people improves your drawing skills for everything else. I don’t know why that is. I will probably start doing groups of people.”

Young said some of the artists that come are en plein air painters, which is French for open air.

“A lot of plein air painters do landscapes, but they are wanting to put figures in their landscapes,” Young said.

Young practices her craft during a three-hour class on three Thursday nights per month. The largest group attending the class has been 11. Class members pitch in to pay for the model.

“We start off with short, quick drawings, like three of those to start, about seven minutes long each, and then we go into long pose,” Young said. “Every 20 minutes we let the model take a five-minute break.”

Young hasn’t tried to do portraits outside of live models but said she could see doing it in the future. Young also schedules time to work on her portraits and figures on weekends.

Through the week, she is quite busy with SullivanMunce duties.

museum, genealogy library and art center,” Young said. “The art center has a gallery where we do six to nine shows a year.

Then we have classes and camps as well. We have the only actual bonafide clay studio in the area.”

Young became SullivanMunce art center director in 2007 and became executive director in 2013. Prior to that, she was an interior designer for approximately 20 years. During that time, she was a SullivanMunce volunteer and taught summer art camp.

David Ruffer recommended Young be hired when he was serving as interim executive director.

Patricia Scott, SullivanMunce president of the board of directors, said she is impressed with the depth and breadth of Young’s artistic talent.

“We (as a board) had been talking to her about exhibiting for over a year but formally invited her to exhibit earlier this year,” Scott said. “I was truly stunned by the group of work she put together. I believe her recent artistic flourishing actually fuels her passion for the SullivanMunce and further deepens her experience and the skills she offers as our executive director.”

The exhibit is open during normal business hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free.

Commentary by Michael Reagan An already depressing campaign is getting worse every day. No matter who wins in November, we’re going to end up with a president that half the nation hates and the other half didn’t really want to win. We have Hillary the Crooked still trying to lie her way out of her email crimes like a cheap lawyer.

We have Trump the Unqualified still talking in gibberish about grabbing Iraq’s oil, claiming he knows more about ISIS than the generals and trading air-kisses with Vladimir Putin.

We even had Gary Johnson the Pot Head flying his Libertarian Party’s campaign plane into a cliff with his already famous “What is Aleppo?” response. So who’s left to vote for, Jill Stein, the mad doctor of the Green Party?

It’s sad to say, but Trump is still our best choice among the worst candidates. For both The Donald and The Hillary, this election is no longer about gaining voters for their candidacy. It’s all about suppressing the other one’s voters. Whoever can get the other one’s supporters to stay home on Election Day wins.

If Trump is going to win in the end, it might also be because of what Citizens United and Judicial Watch do. The two conservative groups, which have used lawsuits and Freedom of Information requests to get the state department to release Clinton’s emails, have caused Hillary much more trouble. There will be more emails coming because of Citizens United and Judicial Watch, plus whatever October surprises WikiLeaks and Julian Assange have coming. The email dumps might very well suppress the voting for Hillary, which, let’s face it, is the only way Trump can win.

Web profiler Commentary by Terry Anker Has the World Wide Web become all too clever at profiling us? With each missive entered on our trusty search engine, the algorithms noting our interests and inquiries become more adroit at delivering products that are, or ought to be, for us. Like a somewhat cloudy mirror, it reflects a hazy, if roughly accurate, countenance. But can we expect the internet to give us legitimate insight to ourselves?

As we are provoked by the banner ads that accompany our electronic morning papers, we come to note the customized nature of the wares – how the web merchants see us. “You enjoy shoes.” “You like to travel.”

“You will spend too much to get a unique bourbon!” They size us up from safe distance with remarkable accuracy. Generally, we relish the personal shopper that delivers goods and services that correspond to our desires, needs and wishes.

But then, there are the parts of our would-

be internet outline that are a bit more jarring.

Who has decided that we might have need for vitamins aimed at the over-50 set or familysized minivans to replace our sporty coupes?

Do they know something about us that we don’t? Perhaps more importantly, where do they get off telling us – plus, with whom else are they speaking?

At the end of the day, the marketers are providing us with a decent value-add. We are introduced to all manner of product, place, and person that might enhance or enrich our lives. Is the sacrifice of privacy worth it? Pandora has been released from her box and it is unlikely that our web anonymity will soon return. So for now, I’m searching for things only hoping to convince my net-profiler that I’m cooler than he thinks!

Heads up, people. Football season is on, and this dance mom has finally wormed her way into an all-guy fanhumor tasy league. Do I know what I’m doing? No. Other than Eli Manning, I’ve actually never even heard of anyone on my team. Do I understand when to start a TE over a WR or an RB? Nope, but I know I need to start two to three each week. Am I going to let any of this stop me from dominating a bunch of beer-guzzling man-children? Bells to the no! I recognize the incredible responsibility I now hold as I represent women everywhere. I promise, I will not fail!

Well, I might. One of my quarterbacks already blew his ACL and is out for the season. I somehow drafted three Colts players, which will make establishing a lineup on their bye week a bit challenging. And I truly have little to no knowledge of the strength and weaknesses of the 30-odd teams in the NFL (but at least I didn’t write NHL!).

I do have an awesome name, though, ‘A Girl Has No Name,’ (Game of Thrones fans, you’re welcome!) which is half the battle, and the help of my football-fanatic teenage son, who dutifully scans my lineup every week to make sure I didn’t start a player on a bye week or the defense who’s up against my key offensive minions. I also have the advantages of having adopted the worst team in the league from last year, and of course, of being a girl. There are literally no expectations of me winning anything. I can only impress!

To wit, I’ve already won the Cool Teacher Award from several students, who have quietly nodded their approval after scanning the copy of my roster posted in my classroom. Unpredictably, I also had a student indicate his disappointment at not making what he thought was essentially my Teacher’s Pet List. In his defense, he doesn’t follow football and I did just label it “My Fantasy Team.”

So here’s to a victorious football season. For me, and women everywhere!

Cramping my style Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I have leg cramps. In the middle of the night, I jump out of bed screaming, brace myself against the side of the humor headboard and push down on the ball of my foot, which shakes the entire room. One night, I almost woke up my wife.

Recently, I shared an elevator ride with an old friend, who asked how I was. “I’m OK, Joel, but at night, I get…”

“Don’t tell me — leg cramps. Here’s what I recommend: vitamin E, three times a day.

Works like a miracle.”

I’m not inclined to take medical advice on the Internet, but you can learn a lot in an elevator. Just in case, I called my doctor to ask his opinion. He told me that vitamin E was not good for me because of an interaction with my cholesterol medication. Then he asked me exactly where I had heard this remedy. I told him the 14th floor of the Chase Building. He said that for my health, I should start taking the stairs.

The next week, in the same elevator, I ran into another old pal. “Hey, Dick, word is out you are having leg cramps.”

“Wow, Arnold, word sure travels up and down fast in this building.”

“My dad had leg cramps, so he drank a gin and tonic every night before bed — and it worked.”

“What did the trick, the gin or the tonic?”

“Who cares?”

Health websites say that gin may help you forget your pain, but it’s the quinine in the tonic that prevents the cramps. For two weeks, I drank a bottle of tonic water before bed. It didn’t help, so now I’m considering the therapeutic benefits of straight Tanqueray.

Recently, I was in Macy’s and saw another old friend, who had this suggestion: “Dick, this sounds really odd, but if you put a bar of soap under the fitted sheet of your bed, you’ll never have legs cramps again.”

Normally, I’d have ignored this totally crazy idea, but I have to tell you ... you can get some really good advice on an escalator.

Leo Kottke doesn’t worry about keeping a setlist to follow.

Each concert takes on warehouse a life of its own.

“Yeah, they vary,” Kottke said of the songs he performs at concerts. “I do just get lost and try to find my way through. I enjoy it. I like to be surprised by the music.”

Kottke, an acoustic guitar player who is known for his fingerpicking style, will perform at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at The Warehouse, 254 1st Ave., Carmel.

Kottke, who performs a variety of blues, jazz and folk music, is known for his rather unusual stage monologues and humor.

“I don’t really tell stories, I just start talking,” Kottke said. “Some subjects are familiar but I’d rather get lost. And I only talk so I know what to play next. Seems to work that way.”

Kottke, who often plays completely instrumental songs, has enjoyed doing vocals more in recent years.

“There’s nothing rational about performance, so it’s hard to find a reason for any part of it,” Kottke said. “Dangerous, actually, to interfere. But I ran for a while and that gave

Lightly butter a 9-by-13 baking pan. Sift the flour together and set them aside. In a large bowl cream together the butter and confectioners’ sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg until blended and gradually add the flour mixture until blended; then stir in the coconut and lemon zest.

Spread the batter in the prepared pan. Bake on the center rack for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges pull away from the sides of the pan.

Cool on a wire rack and glaze the bars while they are still slightly warm.

Glaze – In a bowl, stir together the confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice until smooth.

Drizzle the mixture over the bars, spreading evenly with a flexible spatula. Sprinkle the coconut on the top and cool the bars overnight in the fridge. On game day cut the bars and take them to the tailgate in the top of your food cooler.

cook for 9 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap and chill fish on cedar plank, When completely cooled, remove meat from the skin and flake into large pieces. In a mixing bowl, combine trout with trout mayo. Then garnish with chili powder and chopped cilantro. Serve with ciabatta toast or tortilla chips.

The Naked Monkey, which has spas in Carmel, Fishers and Indianapolis, was founded by business partners Brenda Schultz and Jeniffer Webber, a Zionsville resident who died in June 2011.

“We wanted to raise some money and raise awareness,” Schultz said. “Jen died very suddenly of a heart attack. She was just 44. Jen ignored the symptoms and one day just didn’t wake up. This is a poignant year for us. It’s our 10th anniversary year of being in business and it would have been Jen’s 50th birthday (Sept. 7), and in the Chinese calendar it’s the Year of the Monkey, so we had this idea.”

Schultz got the idea after watching NBC’s Al Roker set the record for longest uninterrupted weather cast.

Carrie Kleiman, Naked Monkey social media manager, worked with Guinness representatives to set guidelines for a record attempt.

Mysteries of the City of David Commentary by Don Knebel Visitors to Jerusalem often stop by what is said to be the site of the fabled palace of Biblical King David. Whether that travel is what they see is a matter of opinion.

According to the Bible, David captured Jerusalem from the Jebusites in the ninth or 10th centuries B.C. and made it the capital of a kingdom uniting the 12 tribes of Israel. People today probably imagine Jerusalem at the time as a great city, befitting their view of David’s United Monarchy. But most scholars believe that David’s Jerusalem occupied a narrow hilltop strip no more than 300-feet wide and 1,500 feet long, with a population of perhaps 2,000.

This area, called the City of David, was southeast of the hill called Mount Moriah, where King Solomon later built the first Jewish Temple.

Excavations in the City of David area began in the 19th century. In the 1920s, archaeologists discovered a 60-foot high terraced structure made of stone along the eastern side of the hill, overlooking the Kidron Valley. The purpose of this structure, labeled the Stepped Stone Structure, has long been a mystery. In 2005, Dr. Eliat Mazar, an Israeli archaeologist, reported that she had found

another stone structure, just as unimaginatively called the Large Stone Structure, at the top of the Stepped Stone Structure. With great fanfare, she said she had found David’s palace, founded by the Stepped Stone Structure.

Other archaeologists quickly disagreed, saying there would not be a palace in such a small “hill-country village.”
