Town leaders urge firefighters to say no to union

By Ann Marie Shambaugh annmarie@youarecurrent.com Zionsville firefighters will soon cast ballots on whether or not to strengthen its ties with its PUBLIC SAFETY union, but elected officials are urging them to vote no.

The Zionsville Fire Department has been affiliated with the International Association of Firefighters Local 4416 since 2014. The vote, taking place Sept.

16 to 18 by secret ballot at Town Hall, will determine whether or not ZFD will officially name IAFF 4416 as its exclusive recMurray ognized representative. “The biggest thing is to legitimize and define who is speaking for the membership of the department on issues that affect the firefighters,� said Tony Murray, president of IAFF 4416.

Other than formalizing the exclusive relationship between ZFD and the local union, Murray said that not much would change – a least for now. And that’s what worries Town Council President Steve Mundy. “There are a number of other things they are more interested in at this point than work contracts, but ultimately it could lead to that,� Mundy said. “We do not believe it is in our best interest or the

best interest of the firefighters.�

After meeting the ZFD union representative about intentions, Mundy said the council supported naming IAFF 4416 as the exclusive recognized representative if the firefighters would waive their rights to meet and confer, a process outlined in state law that can lead to contract discussions. Without the firefighters’ agreement on this point, Mundy said the entire council is against the change.

Murray said his organization could not support that request because it would not be in its best interest. “We can’t say that we’re going to give away rights that we have that Mundy the legislature has put in place,� Murray said. “It could be 20 years from now, and maybe it makes sense to have an [memorandum of understanding] on a subject or topic or activity.�

Mundy said naming the union as the department’s exclusive recognized representative could weaken the “great relationship� between ZFD and the town, among other issues. “It is costly for the members themselves. They pay dues into that over the course of a career that is fairly substantial, but it also brings in a third party, which I think interrupts that relationship between employer and employee,� Mundy said.

I’m just so fortunate to work with students that are interested and ask great questions. They’re curious and whatever I can do to foster that curiosity is what my goal is.�

Town offered 55 acres for park

Zionsville could soon be acquiring 55 acres for a new park.

Developers of the DEVELOPMENT proposed Vonterra subdivision off of Zionsville Road in south Zionsville presented a plan to the Parks Board on Sept. 9 that included donating about half of the land in the 110-acre neighborhood to the town to use for a park.

The topography of the site makes it unsuitable for building homes or anything else.

“It’s quite an expansive and attractive piece of ground,” said attorney Mike Andreoli, representing builder Ryland Homes. “It’s grown over in many aspects and pretty rough, but there are some really wonderful terrain parts of it.”

The site was previously the home of Worman’s Clean Fill and Organic Recycling, which closed after more than 30 years in business.

Worman’s owner Canda Smith said the high property taxes made it difficult to continue operating in Zionsville. She has retired and plans to travel with her husband.

Smith said developers have approached her about purchasing the property for years, and she is pleased with the plan to use half of the

site for a park and preserve nature.

“I see great things in the future for the land,” she said. “I’ve tried to do it right.”

The proposed park is separated from Starkey Park by Eagle Creek on its western border. Plans call for it to include a southern expansion of the Zionsville Rail Trail.

Andreoli said the land could be a good fit for bike trails. The site also includes a pond that is estimated to be 30 to 40 feet deep.

The proposed 107-home Vonterra subdivision will be discussed at the Zionsville Plan Commission meeting Sept. 21. The Parks Board was unable to vote on the land donation because it did not have a quorum. A special meeting has been called for Sept. 16 to discuss this and other issues.

Local human rights laws differ

After the controversy surrounding the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act made national headlines, ORDINANCE municipalities around Indiana have been deciding whether human rights ordinances are needed on the books. In July, Zionsville quietly passed a human rights ordinance, and now its neighbor to the east, Carmel, plans to vote on a similar ordinance at its Sept.

21 city council meeting.

These ordinances aim to Brainard ban discrimination based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and other factors. Banning discrimination based on race or religion already exists in law, but protections weren’t previously available for gay or lesbian groups in many places.

Carmel’s proposed ordinance has attracted considerable media attention, both locally and nationally. On the other hand, Zionsville’s meeting quietly flew in under the radar, receiving only local coverage. “I was somewhat surprised by the difference in attention,� Zionsville Town Council

president Steve Mundy said. “From my knowledge, our councilors didn’t receive any negative input prior to the meeting. It was widely posted so it wasn’t a secretive meeting. It might be due to size since [Carmel is] a bigger city and would attract more attention from the media. But that’s merely a guess.�

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said he’s watched other cities closely as Carmel refines its proposed ordinance. “Carmel’s is simpler,� he said. “As opposed to setting up a board to deal with complaints, it’s easier to have it be the responsibility of Mundy the city attorney’s office to handle the investigation and make a decision.�

Mundy said using a city attorney wasn’t an option for Zionsville. “We don’t have a city attorney or town attorney,� he said. “We use a law firm to give us counsel when needed.�

Zionsville’s town council created a nondiscriminatory-practices review committee to consider complaints. This five-member board has the ability to fine violators of up to $1,250 per incident or refer cases to police if necessary. The board held its first meeting Sept. 14.

Inaugural youth tourney planned

By Mark Ambrogi “ \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ With youth football numbers falling off in some area suburbs due in large part to the national discussion about the FOOTBALL impact of concussions, Mike Garrett Jr. wanted to provide more opportunities for the sport he loves.

So the Zionsville resident came up with the Indy Crossroads Midwest Championships, set for Nov. 7 and 8, for youth football teams.

Teams will play a minimum of three games with the championship games set for 6 p.m.

Nov. 8 “We are pushing this for two reasons. One is the smaller numbers in football and the healthy competition we can bring out in this,� said Garrett, the tournament director. “We’ve done a lot with USA Football. It’s another way to showcase the sport of football. Travel baseball, softball, wrestling and lacrosse do tournaments. For football, this is a new thing.�

Garrett played football at ZCHS, graduating in 1989. His oldest son, Mike Garrett III, is a senior safety on the ZCHS football team.

Another son, Jeb, plays football on a seventhgrade team.

Garrett is coaching a sixth-grade football team in the Zionsville Youth Football League.

Garrett is expecting 300 to 350 teams, totaling about 6,000 players from around the country.

There were 12 participants in seven events in the track and field meet. Ed Moffitt said since he has worked as a Boone County Senior Services driver for three years, it was natural for him to sign up for the competition. “I want to encourage people to do it more.

It’s a lot of fun and good for those age 60

and older,� said Moffitt, who lives just outside Thorntown. “Just participation is the main thing.�

Moffitt, 61, was victorious in the 200, 400 and 800 meter races. Moffitt, who retired as a postal carried in 2011, considers himself more of a distance runner.

Moffitt “I’ve not run these distances here since high school, so it’s been about 45 years,� said Moffitt, who went to Thorntown High School (which merged into Western Boone).

Carol Zuccaro, a 73-yearold Whitestown resident, competed in the one milewalk and 200 meters. “I’m going to do it next year,� said Zuccaro, who exercises regularly in the Zuccaro Silver Sneakers program though Witham Health Services. “I should be in better shape.�

PARKS Sept. 19. Beekeepers will be on hand to explain how they maintain the hive in the center and others around Boone County. “One of our favorite exhibits, not just for the staff but for the visitors, is our observational bee hive,� said Mindy Murdock, park naturalist and nature center manager. “A lot of people come just to check out the bees. Usually when people come visit, they have lots of questions about the bees and the hives.�

The nature center has offered programs about pollinators throughout the summer, Murdock said, and she thought it would be fitting to continue the series by bringing in the beekeepers.

Zionsville-based Woodland Honey helps maintain the hive at the nature center. They also have more than 50 hives in the Boone County area. “We’re going to be there with some hive products – honey, wax, different parts of the bee hive,� said Matt Evans of Woodland Honey, adding that he will be available to answer

questions as well.

Many times the beekeepers aren’t accessible to guests, as they maintain the hives in the evenings. “This gives people a chance to actually meet them,� Murdock said. “The beekeepers can provide more insight than we can. They can get a chance to see some of the tools that they use when they’re out handling the hives. We want to push people to discover what is in their backyard.�

Post hoping to boost membership at hog roast

By Heather Lusk “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ The American Legion is hosting a hog roast on Sept. 19, hoping to draw families and potential members AMERICAN LEGION into Post #79. “We’re trying to get the community to come in and realize you could be a member here,� said DeeDee Woodrum, manager for the American Legion, pointing out that membership isn’t limited to veterans.

Bringing in new membership and getting them actively involved will ensure that the post stays open “so we can help our veterans,� according to Woodrum.

The Stand by the Post Hog Roast starts at 1 p.m. with food included in the admission price.

Pulled pork, hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon and macaroni and cheese will be served. A bake sale and silent auction with raffles will run throughout the day. At 4 p.m. a band will begin performing and will continue to play as late as people stay.

There will be multiple activities for families and children: face painting, a dunk tank, karaoke, a bounce house and slide. “We’re not going to smother (visitors) with ‘join us,’ but we’re going to give them a short fact sheet to let them know how easy it is to become a member,� she said.

Woodrum will also promote the fact that the Legion is open to the public for lunch daily. “You have to be a member to purchase alcohol,� said Woodrum, but there are no other restrictions. “If they’d try it once they’d see how good things are,� she said of the Legion’s restaurant, in particular the fish and steak dinner the second Friday of every month featuring New York strip and ribeye cuts. “If we could get 100 new members that were active that could come in and help support us,� said Woodrum, “that would be a blessing.�

Residents respond to town’s ‘snobby’ status

By Kelsey Ligon “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ It’s not unusual for Zionsville to find itself at or near the top of many positive city rankings, but it recently topped REACTION the list of “Snobbiest Places in Indiana.�

The rankings were compiled by Roadsnacks, a website that exists to “show you the real side of places that not everyone wants to hear.� Zionsville earned the distinction because of its high home prices, high household incomes and high percentage of residents with college degrees. Carmel placed second and Avon third.

Reactions from Zionsville and Carmel residents have been mixed. “I think that at times, living in a privileged community, we forget about the rest of the world and just how lucky we are,� said Chelsea Leeds, a Zionsville resident since 2006.

One Carmel resident (hopefully) joked on Facebook that he crashed his Bentley while reading the article. Another drily proposed closing down the art galleries, theaters and

private schools in order to combat this negative image.

On the other end of the spectrum, some residents were affronted by the article’s claims.

Carmel resident Bill Baines said he did not see the humor of the article. “There are those of us that are uniters, and those of us that are dividers,� Baines said. “The author or authors of ‘snobbiest-places-inIndiana’ are dividers.�

Patti Smith moved to Zionsville in 1988 and said she immediately felt like she was at home. “Perhaps outsiders would say it is a snobby community just because it is clean, well-kept and there is a very high-end car dealership in town, but they are mistaken,� Smith stated on Facebook. “People smile and speak even if you are a stranger. It’s not like that everywhere, so we like it.�

Some of the same factors that led to Zionsville topping the snob list also helped the town place at No. 1 on the “Best Places to Live� in Indiana, according to Homesnacks, a related site.

A new era: Kids don’t play unsupervised anymore Commentary by Ward Degler The young mother was incredulous. “You mean, you let your kids play in the back yard by themselves – unsupervised? What if something happens to them?�

Maybe all that protection is necessary.

PLAIN TALK There really are dangers out there.

But I’m pretty sure the dangers kids face today are pretty much the same dangers we faced yesterday. Sometimes we got hurt – everything from a skinned knee to a broken arm, from a bee sting to a cut and bleeding finger.

I think the difference was we had just come out of a world war where the men were overseas fighting and the moms were working double shifts at the defense plant. There was neither time nor manpower to hover over us kids. We were expected to shift for ourselves, use common sense and look out for one another.

We learned to recognize danger and avoid it. We were re-

sponsible for our own conduct and our own safety.

A typical summer day in my home started with everybody up, dressed and at the breakfast table at the same time. Dad wanted to count noses before going to work. “In case gypsies carted off one of you during the night,� he would say.

After breakfast I had chores: Feed the chickens, clean the cages, empty the ashes, weed the garden, pick the tomatoes.

I jumped on them right away, but I made sure to do them right. I knew if they didn’t pass Dad’s muster when he got home, I’d be doing them again.

Chores done, I’d jump on my bike, yell “G’bye� to Mom and hit the road. Ten minutes later I would arrive at the house, the park or the intersection where all the other guys had assembled. Don’t ask how we knew where to meet. We just knew.

We also knew exactly what we were going to do that day.

We never talked about it or put it to a vote, we just knew.

Sometimes it was fishing at the gravel pit, or skinny-dipping

at the swimming hole. Sometimes we spent the entire day in some guy’s yard planning daring exploits that we knew would never happen.

We always ate lunch at whatever guy’s house we wound up at around noon. Peanut butter and jelly was the same everywhere. And if one of us got hurt, the nearest mom would apply mercurochrome and Band-Aids.

After a full day, one of us would notice the sun was going down Then we silently got on our bikes and headed home for supper.

Kids don’t do that anymore. After all, something might happen to them. Still, I have hope for that mom who lets her kids play unsupervised in the back yard.

Estimating an attendance of 350, Vinton is eager to see the fundraiser return next year. “It all came together perfectly,� she said. “That’s a must have back next summer.�

Some proceeds from the carnival will go towards a new liner for the Olympic-sized pool.

More updates will come in the future. “It’s frozen in time,� Louks said. “You don’t want to lose that specialness but it needs updating.�

Couple battling cancer again as honorary chairs of St.Vincent run/walk

After beating a cancer that put a halt to his professional basketball COVER STORY career and surviving a cardiac arrest that left him dead – literally – for 22 minutes, Andrew Smith was eager to share his inspirational story as an honorary co-chair of the St.Vincent Cancer Run/Walk Challenge, a positive example of the miracle of modern medicine.

Instead, Andrew and his wife, Sam, will watch from the sidelines, as they found out in May that the T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma had returned. “It was much harder the second time around, much, much harder,� said Sam, 24. “The first time we felt like there was a purpose behind it and we could use his story to help people get through their hardships, but the second time it just makes less sense to us.�

For Andrew, 25, who grew up in Zionsville, the repeat diagnosis has led to more questions than answers. “[Doctors] will give you predictions, but nothing is definitive,� he said. “With cancer you never really know.�

The St.Vincent Cancer Run/Walk Challenge has raised more than $1.2 million to support cancer patients and their families.

Past events have led to the purchase of machines to better detect cancer, a mobile screening van, art therapy and much more.

This year, the hospital’s wish list includes a Women’s Boutique at the Cancer Center in Indianapolis, imaging software to improve breast and prostate cancer diagnosis, chemo infusion recliners and exam tables. Organizers are hoping for about 1,200 participants to help raise $500,000.

For the first time this year, the event includes a 5K and chip timing. Participants are invited to walk or run in either event. “It can be either a family-friendly event or a training event,� said Megan Painter, an organizer of the event, whose niece is battling lymphoma.

A rocky start

It all started less than a year into the Smith’s fairytale marriage. High school sweethearts at Covenant Christian, the couple wed after Andrew graduated from Butler University, where he was a key player on the men’s basketball team that made it to the national championship game two years in a row.

Soon after the wedding, the young couple moved to Lithuana for Andrew to begin his pro basketball career. It wasn’t long before he was diagnosed with cancer, and he returned home for treatment.

Later that year, only three days into his new job at Mina Leasing and Financing in Plainfield, he collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest that lasted 22 minutes. Amazingly, he survived with almost no long term effects.

Andrew received his final chemo treatment in December 2014, and the young couple was eager to begin living a normal life. They bought their first home together in Irvington and enjoyed finding a new, regular, routine.

swelling in his neck, the same symptom he had with his first cancer diagnosis. Thinking it could be caused by a dental problem, they hoped for the best.

Their worlds came crashing down when they learned the cancer had returned. “Anytime your husband’s life is threatened, it’s obviously very scary,� Sam said. “So for it to happen multiple times, with the first cancer diagnosis, then the cardiac arrest, it just keeps coming and it just gets tiring.�

wanted to fight again, the Smiths are hoping that they can use their situation to help others.

Andrew is planning to undergo a bone marrow transplant to reset his immune system once his cancer is in remission. Doctors quickly found a donor on the national registry list after his family members were ruled out as a match, but the couple has learned that others are not so fortunate.

That’s why instead of running, which

is now out of the question for Andrew, the Smiths have organized a booth at the St.Vincent Cancer Run/Walk Challenge to distribute information on bone marrow donations and allow people to sign up to become a donor on the spot. “We’re really hoping to get a lot of people on the registry,� Sam said. “We had no idea until we were faced with the relapse and the bone marrow transplant how easy it is to get on it and how few are on it.�

Sometimes the greatest wisdom comes from that which is the longest lived. Sixteenth century Priest, St. Vincent de Paul, described the nature of the stories we tell thusly: Humility is nothing but truth, and pride is nothing but lying. His fairly stark and binary contrast brings forward an interesting supposition. As we are increasingly identified by our persona online, how do we remain humble and still meet the expectations of the world-wide-web?

Webinars, meetings and colloquia dedicated to putting our best electronic foot forward have become ubiquitous in our inboxes. We are told that social media is an imperative to success in business â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and perhaps in life.

Moreover, we must carefully curate our web presence to honestly portray ourselves â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but do it in a way likely to put us in the MOST positive light. Some of us clearly take the messaging to an extreme. Photos slide from optimistic to intentionally deceitful. But, who determines whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gone too far?

As communities are redefined, our traditional methods of vetting affiliates are

proving inadequate. Where we formerly relied upon personal recommendations, we now turn to unknown and often unidentified web-writers to direct our decisionmaking. A lifetime of civic involvement and network building can be supplanted by an effective and well-designed web presence.

Surely, it begins to equalize access. Yet, it also brings considerable peril.

People can completely manufacture themselves on the web. Likewise, we can anonymously destroy the lives of those with whom we have some real or imagined beef. Do humility, truth, pride, and dishonesty assume completely different meanings in a digital age; or, do they carry the same standards applied in a much broader way?

How do we manage to honestly advance our message above the noise of a medium which delivers lies and truth with equal speed and abundance?

And where I got my first hole-in-one in 1965. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll tell the golf pro the story and ask if I can play that hole again. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll remind me that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not a member, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll say â&#x20AC;&#x153;whateverâ&#x20AC;? and wish I had never stopped by. â&#x20AC;Śsee the former site of the small baseball diamond where we played Little Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;in woolen uniforms.  We were told not to drink water when we were hot because it would make us sick. A true catastrophe Commentary by Danielle Wilson You may recall that last week I was all chuckles after coming home and discovering that my husband Doo had HUMOR been the first responder on a rather messy plumbing issue.

And you may have also guessed (and been correct) that I was exaggerating a hair when I declared said issue a “catastrophe.” Well, I’m not laughing now, nor is the word catastrophe sufficient to describe what actually transpired.

It seems our beloved dogwood tree found a crack in the main sewage pipe and decided to extend her roots into all of its glorious, nutrient-rich cargo. This woody tangle along with paper products, red hair balls, and various other not-easily-degradable “items” eventually created a gloopy enough blockage to impress even the most seasoned heart surgeon. One flush of the main floor toilet was all it took to bring most of the contents back up, out onto our hardwood and carpeted floors, down the air vents and through the ceiling of our finished basement.

Neither of us initially thought the damage was bad. In fact, we allowed our son to sleep two nights in his room despite the still-damp carpet and slightly-off odor. [Parents of the

year!] But once the remediation people came through, we learned we were being exposed to nothing short of nuclear radiation. “This is DEFCON One people! We need blowers, heaters, suction, and drains. Let’s move, let’s MOVE!” We’re looking at thousands of dollars in restoration, including new flooring and drywall, landscaping, and of course, an updated sewer line. I can’t step foot in the house right now without threading my way through rubberized venting mats, sinuous air hoses and obnoxiously loud industrial dryers. And despite having the AC set at 71, the constantly running motors keeps the air temperature over 85, leaving us all grumpy and a tad bit sleep-deprived.

The good news? We have insurance, no one got hurt (or sick), and most importantly, it wasn’t my fault. [I’ve been known to leave the sink on for our cat and may have once caused a small flood.] The bad news? I’m not laughing anymore.

Celebration of Bands Sept. 18-19

By Mark Ambrogi Â&#x201C; \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ The Celebration of Bands will provide spectators with a wide variety of music and instruments highlighting different eras for the first time this year in Carmel.

Charles Conrad, who organized the bands, said there will be a whole spectrum of musical styles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have some classical music and definitely have some Broadway and Hollywood music, some British brass band and a Civil War band,â&#x20AC;? said Conrad, the Indiana Wind Symphony conductor.

All the concerts on Sept. 18 and 19 are free. The Sept. 18 performances will be held in Arts & Design District while the Sept.

19 performances will start outside the Palladium at 2 p.m. and move inside the Palladium for Grand Finale Concert at 7:30 p.m. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hope to fill up the Palladium (1,601 seats),â&#x20AC;? Conrad said.

One of the unique performers will be the Eiger Alphorn Duo. The duo will perform with their 12-foot long wooden horns outside the Palladium at 3:45 p.m. and at 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 19.

The alphorn is known mostly in the Switzerland and the Alpine regions of Europe. The duo performs on authentic instruments, complete with Tachten (authentic Swiss and German costumes). Peggy DeMers and Vicki Wheeler, the duo, will join the

Joining the Indiana Wind Symphony will be guest trumpet soloist Patrick Hession at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18. Hession also will perform a solo with the Middle School Honors Band at 5 p.m. on Sept. 19 and will be involved in the Grand Finale Concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. inside the Palladium. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a phenomenal trumpet player. He was Maynard Fergusonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last lead player,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said.

Saxtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornet Band, one of the top Civil War bands in the country, will play at 4 p.m. on Sept. 19 and then again during the Grand Finale. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They play authentic pieces you would have heard in the Civil War days,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were the very first ones I thought of because I wanted to make sure we had a Civil War band. They were absolutely my first choice.â&#x20AC;?

The Middle School Honors Band will be paired with the Indianapolis New Horizons Band. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of the New Horizons band are seniors and most played instruments in high school,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once they retired they decided to form a band.â&#x20AC;?

The Middle School Honors Band is made up of Carmelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three middle schools and Hamilton Southeasternâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four middle schools.

Hopkins and Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sunset Jazz Band will have the opening performance at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 18. Next up is Indy Winds Flute Choir, who will use a contrabass flute. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never even seen one, let alone heard one in a concertbased setting,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said.

The Starry Knights Big Band will perform as the Swinging Sergeants in the first dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final act at 8:30 p.m., performing World War II-era Big Band music.

Civil War recreation band on showcase at â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Celebrationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;

So the University of Kentucky student took one with the Saxtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornet Band in 1992. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I fell in love with it,â&#x20AC;? said Goins, who has been a regular ever since.

The Saxtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornet Band, based in central Kentucky, travels everywhere to perform Civil War-era music in actual instruments from Goins the era. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to promote this era of music,â&#x20AC;? said Goins, who serves in the role of a general manager for the band. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to prevent it from being lost.â&#x20AC;?

Saxtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornet Band is a modern recreation of a Civil War brass band that was started in the late 1850s in Lexington, Ky. Henry Saxton had a group of musicians through 1910. Goins, 43, said the modern band formed in 1989. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We played every type of historical event and music festival,â&#x20AC;? said Goins. whose group played several years at Conner Prairie. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve played a presidential inauguration (George W. Bush in 2000), played overseas and been in a

few movies. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re one of a handful of people who can play the music and play them on original 1860s instruments.â&#x20AC;?

Saxtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornet Band will perform at 4 p.m. on Sept. 19 during the Celebration of Bands outside The Center for the Performing Arts and then will perform with the Indiana Wind Symphony inside the Palladium that evening during the Grand Finale concert. Goins serves as the solo E flat cornet performer.

Goins, the musical director for First United Methodist Church in Frankfort, Ky., said they

play the music from the Library of Congress site so the music is exactly what you would have heard during the Civil War. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the exception of the drums, all the instruments are 150 years old,â&#x20AC;? Goins said. Goins said the sound is a lot softer than what a brass band sounds like today. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come a long way with technology and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made them where they are much more brilliant and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a lot louder,â&#x20AC;? Goins said. Goins said the group has about 20 mem-

bers with a different group attending each time. About 12 to 14 are expected to play at the Carmel concerts.

The band brings a narrator for its show.

One of the highlights will be a world premiere of piece written by composer James Curnow. The Indiana Wind Symphony will join the Saxtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornet Band in the performance.

Goins said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an 11-minute work that uses narration from diary entries from the Civil War. The piece is called â&#x20AC;&#x153;With Malice Towards None,â&#x20AC;? which is a quote from Abraham Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second presidential inaugural address. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be cool,â&#x20AC;? Goins said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working on it for four years.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to see what an authentic Civil War band sounds like within the texture of modern wind band. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to sound like a movie score. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re stepping outside our mission which is just playing music from the fouryear period to hopefully educate people and bridge the time gap.â&#x20AC;?

They use saxhorns developed by Adolph Sax, who later invented the saxophone. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were all the rage in the 19th century,â&#x20AC;?

Goins said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass and we have two drummers. So all the instruments are voiced just like a choir.â&#x20AC;?

Brainard: Celebration of Bands gives local economy boost

By Mark Ambrogi Â&#x201C; \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ As a former high school French horn player and son of a band director, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard is an enthusiastic supporter of music.

So, naturally, he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be sold on putting the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support behind Celebrations of Bands in Carmel on Sept. 18 and 19. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Part of our economic development strategy with the Palladium was to bring groups to Carmel for children and youth contests, much like the International Violin competition in InBrainard dianapolis,â&#x20AC;? Brainard said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every instrument in an orchestra or band has a national contest, so where else but in center of the country with a beautiful concert hall, safe, clear area with good air connections. This is part of the strategy. We would like to see many more groups and organizations see the Palladium and our neat downtown as their home base.â&#x20AC;?

The Sept. 18 performances will be in the downtown Arts & Design District. The Sept. 19 performances will held outside The Center for the Performing Arts and then the Grand Finale will be inside the Palladium. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Plenty of people will be spending money in our hotels and at our restaurants, other businesses,â&#x20AC;? said Brainard, who plans to attend both days of concerts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good economic development for Carmel plus it provides a great event for people here to enjoy. Hopefully, it has a major impact with large groups coming. It really helps our small business people out.â&#x20AC;?

Brainard said it will be good for Carmel students to see the best in the country. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They can compare how they are doing vis-a-vis the best performers their age,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Charles Conrad, who is coordinating the two-day event, said it was Brainardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s idea to put together a Middle School Honor Band because he wanted to get the students and schools involved.

Brainard, a 1972 Elkhart (Ind.) High School (now Elkhart Central) graduate, loves the idea of music being a full-time passion.

He said his father, Jack Brainard, who died in 2013 at age 85, directed New Horizon Seniors Band in his retirement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He would have people in their 70s start an instrument for the first time,â&#x20AC;? Brainard said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Music is something you can do your entire life. You can build friendships. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great thing for people to do.â&#x20AC;?

Jack directed the Bristol High School band before it consolidated with Elkhart Schools. Jack then directed bands at two middle schools in the Elkhart school system.

Brainard recalled meeting Conrad, a 1972 Indianapolis Arlington High School graduate, at band camp when they were 10 or 11 years old. Conrad is the Indiana Wind Symphony conductor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(Celebration of Bands) was mostly my brainchild but I would say Jim Brainard had a lot to do with it,â&#x20AC;? Conrad said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s obviously very committed to the arts. Particularly one of the facets of it weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to talk about music being a life-long pursuit whether you do it as a profession, whether you do it as hobby or whatever. We want to show extracurricular actives donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be something that ends when you leave high school. At 77, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not going to play tackle football but you can play the saxophone. One of my all-time trumpet idols, Doc Severinsen just turned 88, and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still soloing with major symphonies around the country.â&#x20AC;?

Creekside Middle School Honor Band to be in the spotlight

By Mark Ambrogi Â&#x201C; \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ The Celebration of Bands will have a unique aspect of a band put together solely for the five-song performance. The Middle School Honor Band is made up of about 60 top members from Carmelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three middle schools and Hamilton Southeasternâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four middle schools. Wendy Higdon, director of bands for Carmelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Creekside Middle School and Middle School Honors Band committee chairman, said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s close to being evenly divided among the seven schools.

The Indianapolis New Horizons Band, made up of older band members, and the Middle School Honor Band will share the one-hour spot starting at 5 p.m. outside The Center for the Performing Arts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the idea that music is something you can have for a lifetime,â&#x20AC;? Higdon said of pairing the two bands.Â

Second City returns to Zionsville for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Fully Loadedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tour

The comedy improv expertise of Second City, known for producing such famed talents as Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, COMEDY Bill Murray and more is coming to the Zionsville Performing Arts Center on Sept. 19 with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fully Loadedâ&#x20AC;? tour.

Eve Krueger, a comedy veteran of 15 years and current Second City ensemble actor, has had a career that literally spans the map of comedic opportunity. With worldly experience performing in Atlanta, Chicago, and even a Norwegian cruise line, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perhaps odd that her favorite expletive seems to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;oh, cheese and crackers,â&#x20AC;? but it captures her sense of engaging humor just as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interesting about Chicago, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find, is itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a mostly longform improvisation town,â&#x20AC;? Krueger said. Krueger recently moved to Chicago for work at Second City. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had the opportunity to do lots of improv, even though Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve only been there for a year.â&#x20AC;?

Most fans of improvised comedy might only be familiar with episodes of ABCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whose Line Is It Anywayâ&#x20AC;? but the modern improvisation scene has grown well beyond its roots, Krueger said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel like improv is going through a really evolutionary period right now,â&#x20AC;? Krueger said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have a deep love for shortform improv, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also seeing longform improv used in different ways. If you look at some of the major comedy podcasts out there, like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Comedy Bang! Bang!,â&#x20AC;? a lot of those guys are just improvising with different characters, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a longform over the years that you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see necessarily. Much of the comedy shows today rely on actors who can improvise well to create more dialogue, which is lovely.â&#x20AC;?

Area artists in Hoosier Salon show

Hamilton County and Zionsville artists are well represented in the 91st annual Hoosier Salon 91st exhibition at the Eugene ART and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the longest running show of its kind in the state,â&#x20AC;? said Jim May, Hoosier Salon executive director. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the creme de la creme of the people who got in per the judgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s requirements,â&#x20AC;? said Richard Anderson, manager of Carmelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hoosier Salon gallery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are approximately 150 pieces with sculptures and everything else. Everything in the show is for sale.â&#x20AC;?

Following the show, Anderson said the majority of the pieces will be featured in the gallery, 22 N. Range Line Rd. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll pick what we think are the strongest ones from the show for our consignment gallery in Carmel,â&#x20AC;? May said.

By Sam Elliott Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ A Noblesville tradition for more than four decades, the annual Pumpkin Harvest Festival will return for its 43rd year FAMILY FUN at Stoneycreek Farm from Sept. 26 through October.

Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the only admission fee into the Harvest Festival is a $5 charge for parking Tuesdays through Sundays.

There is no parking fee on Mondays.

A collection of fall activities await families attending the Pumpkin Harvest Festival, with a staple of the season still the eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most popular choice. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hayrides out into the pumpkin fields for people to pick their own pumpkins is still our most popular thing,â&#x20AC;? Stoneycreek Farm owner Loren Schmierer said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a new rope maze this year, which we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have before,â&#x20AC;? Schmierer added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to continue to have the big cave slide, climbing wall and zip line.â&#x20AC;?

The eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 400-foot zip line is back as one of the main attractions. Open to anyone 10 and older weighing between 90 and 250 pounds for $15, the ride gives zippers an aerial

Then you get down by taking a circular slide down. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of unique and you get a view of the pumpkin fields, wagons and all the crowds from up there.â&#x20AC;?

What do tailgaters want in a dessert?

By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s you brain center telling you that you have to have something sweet, or you are still hungry, almost every tailgater in the lot wants a dessert after a sandwich and side dish.

If it were just the need for a sweet, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d probably see a lot more candy bars at tailgate parties.

Tailgate chefs seem to pride themselves in their desserts as much as they do their main course foods. Just look around and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see cakes, cookies, pastries and even slices of pie.

There is a physical problem, however, with most desserts at a tailgate party â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they have to be easy to eat. They shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t require a plate, forks or spoon. They shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands so sticky that he or she is forced to look for a basin in which to wash. And still importantly â&#x20AC;&#x201C; tailgate desserts have to taste good! So, if you want a dessert that is easy to eat, and something creative and delicious, you should serve bars.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great bar recipe for Marmalade Brownies by Marie Simmons, a former columnist for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bon Appetiteâ&#x20AC;? and author of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bar Cookies A to Z.â&#x20AC;? Marie and I exchanged ideas

and books when â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Tailgaterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Handbookâ&#x20AC;? first came out. These dense dark bars will thrill your tailgaters.

Ingredients: 1/3 cup unsalted butter, 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, 1/2 cup orange marmalade, 2 large eggs beaten, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract, 2/3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, Pinch of salt Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Oil a nine-inch square, baking pan.

Melt butter and chocolate in a nonaluminum saucepan. Remove pan from the heat. Add the brown sugar and marmalade and beat with a wooden spoon until blended. Add the eggs and vanilla and stir. Now add the flour, walnuts and salt; stir to blend. Spread the batter in the prepared pan and bake for 25 minutes, or until the edges began to pull away from the pan.

Cool on a wire rack before cutting into bars.

The goal was to achieve a functional, relaxing outdoor space for a busy family who loves to be outside.

1. A larger deck footprint was designed for a more functional space.

2. Roof line locations were carefully considered to allow unobstructed views, while blocking harsh sunlight.

3. Retractable screens were installed to provide a golf ball and insect barrier.

4. Maintenance-free Trex decking materials finished off the floor.

5. Amenities such as a television, high ceiling fan, and recessed lighting completed the inviting space.

The original decking forced the residents to provide constant maintenance. With no roof, the space was always exposed to harsh sunlight, insects, and the occasional stray golf ball. The biggest challenge was to keep the roof height high enough to not obstruct golf course views, and to not interfere with the great room windows.

On July 9, 2013, I wrote this about an ancient temple to Baâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;al in Palmyra, Syria, which I visited in November 2010: â&#x20AC;&#x153;When TRAVEL the fighting is over and a trip to Syria becomes possible once more, Palmyra provides a wonderful opportunity to see what the Jewish Second Temple probably looked like before its destruction â&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;?

Sadly, my prediction has been proven false.

ISIS, which captured Palmyra in May 2015, has obliterated Palmyraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extraordinary temple.

For persons living in Syria in the early first century, the most important god was Baâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;al (or Bel), who was related to the god whose worship by the Israelites so vexed the Hebrew prophets. Palmyraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s temple to Baâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;al was dedicated in 32 A.D., about the same time that Jesus was at the Temple in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. The two temple complexes were very similar. Each had a Roman-style courtyard surrounded by thick colonnaded walls with impressive gates. Each included a tall building near the rear of the courtyard housing a holy of holies that only priests could

enter. Each had an altar of undressed stones for sacrificing animals. It is likely that the architects of the Palmyra temple either intentionally drew upon the design of the Jewish Temple or both drew upon a common source.

Meticulous reconstruction of Palmyraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s temple that began in 1929 presented a now-lost opportunity to envision the design of the Second Temple, destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. Unfortunately, the destruction of the Palmyra temple is not the first time intolerant religious beliefs have led to the destruction of irreplaceable cultural treasures. For example, early Christians damaged and defaced Egyptian temples because they rejected the beliefs the temples represented. But historical precedents cannot make the malicious destruction of part of the common heritage of humanity any less deplorable.
