What it means: Councilors raised questions about how they could track compliance Aug. 7 when they approved a $10,000 reimbursement for Capstone Benefits Group to relocate to Zionsville’s Northwest Tech Park. Whitehead said businesses that receive tax abatements are required to file paperwork with the state tracking their progress, but Zionsville typically approves cash reimbursement incentives, which the state does not require to be tracked.

What’s next: Whitehead said the Boone EDC has a form that it uses to track incentives for the City of Lebanon, and she plans to modify it for use in Zionsville.

What happened: The council approved moving $96,000 from the general fund to cover legal expenses and relocation assistance for residents recently forced to move from the Zionsville Mobile Home Park.

What it means: Approximately $60,000 is needed to cover legal fees for work that includes the sale of Creekside Corporate Park, TIF projects and other matters. The town spent approximately $36,000 to help six mobile home owners relocate after the state found unsanitary conditions at the Zionsville Mobile Home Park.

What’s next: Town attorney Heather Willey said she will research whether the Zionsville Mobile Home Park owner could be held responsible to reimburse the town for the assistance funds.

What happened: The council approved the re-appropriation of money in several funds to help balance the budget mid-year.

What it means: The request was not for any new funds, but rather to move money from line items with additional funds to those that went over budget.

Emily Landis, DOR director of external communications, confirmed that the department is working to resolve the problem.

“Indiana’s DOR continues to work with representatives from the affected municipalities to understand the problem, educate the business owners involved and provide a resolution moving forward to avoid any future confusion for current and new business establishments,” Landis stated in an email.

“We are in the process of evaluating the complexity of the situation and working toward a resolution.”

Norton said he has no idea how much money has inadvertently been collected for Zionsville’s food and beverage tax in Whitestown.

“It’s not a Zionsville issue. Let’s make that very clear,” Norton said. “The only issue Zionsville would have is if the department of revenue is going to take money away from their food and beverage account.”

As of press time, Landis did not state whether there is a process for taxpayers who paid the 1 percent tax that wasn’t supposed to be charged to get their money back.

Town Hall move to begin – Zionsville Town Hall will be closed Sept. 15 to 18 as items are moved across the parking lot to the new Town Hall building, which will open to the public at 8 a.m.

Sept. 19. The Sept. 18 Town Council meeting has been cancelled. The first council meeting in the new building will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 2. An official dedication of the new building is scheduled for Nov. 15.

Father-son breakfast – Fathers and sons are invited to Zionsville All-Pro Dad’s Day Breakfasts. These monthly gatherings provide some father-son quality time while hearing speakers at the same time. A Zionsville family is mourning the loss of its pet tortoise after it was shot and killed by a neighbor.

Merlin, a 16-year-old sulcata police tortoise, was shot Aug. 31 after he escaped his enclosure and wandered onto a neighbor’s property.

His owner, Tasha Chapel, started a Facebook page called Justice for Merlin to share the tortoise’s story.

“He was like having the best dog in the world that couldn’t bark or jump,” the Facebook page states. “Always loving, he would smile in excitement each time we would meet in the yard. He loved bright colors (like our red tractor).”

Police have not released the name of the neighbor who shot Merlin. The Carmel law office of Coots, Henke & Wheeler issued a statement to a local TV station on his behalf.

“The Zionsville man who has lived in the area for decades, apologized to the pet’s owner immediately after he realized his own terrible error in judgment. He expressed his sincere sorrow to the family and continues to indicate a desire to make amends. The overwhelming negative response on social media with distorted facts and speculation has put a barrier between the man and the pet’s owner with attempts to make amends nearly impossible,” it states.

On her Facebook page, Chapel has urged those following Merlin’s story to not contact the neighbor.

“Please stop with the hate and threats against the man who shot Merlin. These are only counter-productive. I have never wished harm upon him or his family, nor would want anyone to suffer as I have,” she stated on Facebook.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Dept. is investigating the incident.

K-9 Jelka goes back to work

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Police Dept. K-9 Jelka returned to work Aug. 22 after being hit by a truck in front of her Westfield home police May 15.

The accident caused serious injuries and left Jelka in grave condition.

She was rushed to MedVet Indianapolis, where doctors performed emergency surgery to repair a compound fracture in her leg and a hole in her abdomen.

“One of the surgeons that helped save her life informed us that once they got her back into the emergency room, she actually died for a minute to a minute-and-a-half.

They couldn’t even get her prepped because she was so seriously wounded,” said officer Josh Stutesman, Jelka’s handler.

The 2-year-old Belgian Malinois’ determination to get back to work seemed to pull Jelka through a tough recovery.

“Her favorite place to sit when we’re working is in the backseat behind me. She knows that is the door that opens if I need her,” Stutesman said. “On the way to MedVet she tried to sit behind me to look out the window. Even in the midst of complete tragedy she was still trying to work.”

On day 99 after the accident, Jelka was cleared by doctors to return.

“Even though they believe she is OK to go back to full duty, we are easing her in to help her get her muscle built back up,” Stutesman said. “She is probably stronger than she was before the accident.”

Jelka’s duties include tracking suspects, looking for missing persons, drug searches and apprehension.

Stutesman said the power of prayer played a huge role in her recovery. He thanks members of the Zionsville community for their thoughts and donations.

“I just want to thank everyone who has prayed, donated and reached out to us in this time of need,” he said.

Up With People leaves mark

Wherever they go, the cast of Up With People tries to help communities they visit.

Each week they make giving back a mark in a new city by volunteering in schools, homeless shelters or animal shelters. In Zionsville, their focus was helping children, which brought them to the Boys & Girls Club one evening to play soccer and games with students before painting areas of the buildings.

Members of the Up With People cast come from 15 countries and 23 states. They are on the road until December, visiting 15 cities throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe. Participants range in age from 17 to 29 and stay with host families wherever they go.

Many become part of the organization because of previous ties. Hidde Meurs from the Netherlands was inspired to join Up With People after his family was a host for the program years earlier. Meurs was introverted in school and faced personal

challenges but has found the perfect outlet in Up With People.

“Here, I can be myself,” he said. “There’s no judgment in Up With People.”

Kim Taylor’s father formerly traveled with Up With People. The Canada resident is now part of the Up With People staff. She wanted to work for a nonprofit after receiving her college degree, and Up With People seemed to fit.

“When else do I get to do that?” she said.

“It combined a lot of different things.”

Even Kristie Goehausen, who hosted one of the participants, knew she wanted to offer her home after remembering an Up With People performance she enjoyed as a child that had a lasting impact on her when “We Are the World” was popular.

She hopes the experience will have a similar effect on her sons.

“I hope they have a pen pal for life,” Goehausen said.

Local house featured on Architects’ Home Tour From noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17, guests on the Architects’ Home Tour can visit six homes in Inarchitecture dianapolis and one in Zionsville. It is a selfguided tour hosted by The American Institute of Architecture to introduce the public to a variety of design styles in the area.

This is the 10th home tour and the first to break the biennial tradition.

Laura Musall, a member of the Architects’ Home Tour committee, said the previous events were so successful that they decided to have another tour this year.

“People love home design, and the Architects’ Home Tour gives the public a chance to see various home styles, perhaps see some trends in home designs, meet with residential architects, learn about designing homes that are energy-efficient, how to make the most of space, even if it’s small, how to think about renovations and a lot more,” Musall said.

A friend showed me a picture of an emperor moth he saw the other day. I told him I had just seen a luna plain talk moth. Both are beautiful, oversized creatures.

And both are relatively rare. I’ll spot a luna moth maybe once or twice each summer. I hadn’t seen an emperor moth in years.

Since we were already on the subject, we started chatting about butterflies.

That’s when the mood darkened, since neither of us had seen many butterflies of any description this summer.

A few swallowtails with their delicate rear ends flitting among the flowers in my garden, a scattering of cabbage moths, and a couple of monarch look-alike viceroys made up the tally at my place. My friend said his was about the same.

No monarchs. Neither of us had seen a monarch all summer.

We’ve long known the monarch is in trouble. For a couple reasons. Storms during their fall migration wiped out an estimated 80 percent of the population a couple years ago. The butterflies, which once covered some 50 acres in Mexico shrunk to

During their incredible migration from the U.S. to Mexico, the butterflies can tolerate serious temperature swings — reportedly down to 17 degrees — with no danger.

But add rain to the cold air and the monarchs die by the millions.

In the U.S. they are threatened by enhanced agricultural weed control. You can’t blame farmers for wanting to get as much tillable acreage as possible, but herbicides have wiped out most of the milkweed in the country. And milkweed is the only thing that monarch caterpillars eat.

Entomologists say we need 500 million milkweed plants to sustain the butterfly population in this country. No one is asking farmers to give up clean fields for the effort, either. Instead, the onus is on us to buy the seeds and plant milkweed in our flower gardens and along our fences.

And the butterfly folks assure us that if we plant milkweed, the monarchs will come.

Song lyrics inspire retired educators to write children’s book on perseverance

The Zionsville residents and former educators spent nearly a year revising and adapting the lyrics into the book, “Not Yet,” about a young girl who makes mistakes but keeps trying to do her best. The girl assures herself that she’s “not yet” ready but will eventually “get there.”

“There’s just so much more pressure on kids these days,” said Hockema, a retired teacher. “It’s high-packed pressure, so they feel like failures when they should just be learning. Kids don’t need to feel like failures when they just don’t do something the first time.”

The authors said the book’s message also fits with Zionsville Community Schools’ “Strong in Every Way” initiative, a human capital campaign to help students develop resilience and believe in themselves.

Cox, who recently retired, wrote the lyrics last year while she was a counselor at Stonegate Elementary. She was thinking about the growth mindset, focusing on the process of learning versus the end result. The growth mindset embraces mistakes as learning experiences.

She stood at the antique podium, awaiting the assembled audience to finish the requisite applause that welcomed her to speak. She stood, as if humbled by the recognition of the one who’d introduced her.

She stood, a Gold Star Mom, whose only son was killed in action while serving our nation.

“I’m inspired by you,” she said. “I’m honored by you, and honored by the fact that you’re providing education.” She didn’t mention the stunning and unimaginable suffering inure to her loss. Instead she talked of the happiness in knowing that her son was contributing to the schooling of the children of U.S. Marines killed in action.

When asked, Ron Overton, a longtime supporter, likewise deflected his own service (his father a World War II Army veteran, Ron a retired Marine, and two sons on active duty), instead saying, “You hear all the time about sacrifices of time, or money.

But how can it compare to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice? And the sacrifice made by the families of those lost?”

Founded in Indiana by Shirley Slaugh and her late husband, Capt. Larry Slaugh, in 1995, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has honored scores of young men and women by supporting the education of their children or those of others killed or wounded in action.

College update: I have not shed a single, pathetic tear since we dumped our oldest at a non-air conditioned humor dorm to begin his freshman year of college. Except for my embarrassing, periodic weeping during “This is Us” episodes and a slight catch in my throat when Theon had a Shawshank moment in the “GOT” season finale, I have been 100 percent emotion-free this past month. And no, it’s not because I’m a soulless, day-walkin’ ginger. It’s because Doo and I did a pretty good job of raising our son, and it was high-time Geoffrey got the heck out of Dodge, i.e., “Our House.”

Granted, I did text G quite frequently the first few days, but I never actually called.

And admittedly, I do think of him often, but usually in the context of “I wish I had Geoffrey here to drive Maddie to dance” or “His room has never been this clean!” But I haven’t yet succumbed to the memories of him as an adorable baby or a precocious toddler or even as a bratty teen. If anything, G’s absence has given me more time to focus on our remaining three, who are quite busy having memorable moments of their own.

Besides, since he’s been on his own, Geoffrey has successfully weathered a weekend illness, an outdated insurance card, a room violation and a food market that apparently sells only vegan bread.

He’s attending classes (I think), doing laundry (I hope) and even organizing his own ride home for a family reunion (though he booked the wrong bus company).

Yep, our son is doing fine, and so am I. Just not while watching TV. Peace out.

REA D ER ’ S V I E W Despite exciting discoveries, stem cell research still has a long way to go Editor, As someone with a long previous career in stem cell transplantation, I would like to provide some medical perspective on a recent series of “commentary” articles about stem cells in Current in Zionsville. Broadly speaking, there are two types of stem cell transplantation, autologous and allogeneic. The first is a process by which patients receive back their own stem cells, perhaps after some manipulation to enrich or expand them.

The second is the process by which a patient receives someone else’s stem cells, which have been carefully determined to be a compatible “match” for the patient.

The last decade or so has seen some exciting discoveries in which scientists have found that our cells (even those that are committed to form a certain cell lineage like skin, muscle, etc.) can be manipulated in the lab to switch back to a stem cell that could then be manipulated to turn back into another type of cell.

Of course, many challenges await these early studies, including how to grow enough of these to replace millions of damaged cells, and how do we make sure they get to where we want them to go.

And in the case of foreign cells, how do we prevent rejection by the body or forming a tumor in the recipient’s body?

With the explosion of online “information,” one is wise to keep one philosophical maxim in mind: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

So before believing that stem cells have seemingly magical properties to cure a plethora of diseases, we must demand that very careful, controlled studies have been performed to prove this, and that appropriate safety studies have been published. Hopefully, this perspective will assist readers in assessing the scientific validity of stem cell stories they may encounter online or in print.

Knee-jerk reaction to pain Commentary by Dick Wolfsie “It really hurts,” I said to my wife as my knee buckled under me.

“Good,” Mary Ellen said. humor That’s not the kind of support you expect from your spouse. It’s bad enough I have virtually no support from my knee, which is why I’m getting a new one next week. Unlike a heart or kidney, you do not get someone else’s knee: It pretty much comes in a box like a pair of shoes from Amazon Prime.

You just have to pray it’s going to fit. And there’s a lousy return policy.

Why my wife’s apparent lack of sympathy? When I have a couple of pain-free days, I question having this operation. This drives Mary Ellen nuts. When we go on vacation, my wife wants to hike all morning and shop all afternoon, and I usually hurt too much to tag along. To end this agony, I’ll need a new knee. To avoid going shopping, I’ll need a new excuse.

I have never spent a night in a hospital in my life, and I’m afraid I will get very antsy and impatient until I get to go home. I’ve stopped going to the Minute Clinic at CVS. It once took them twice as long to treat me

My wife claimed she said four weeks. Mary Ellen’s a better listener, and that’s why I wanted her with me through the entire orientation.

When I went in for my EKG, the nurse told Mary Ellen she need not accompany me, “unless you’d get a kick out of watching me rip the adhesive pads off your husband’s hairy chest.”

The last stop that day was the hospitalist, the physician who assesses your medications to avoid any complications with the anesthesia. The nurse referred to him as “our very own medicine man,” which made me so nervous my knees started to shake.

That made my bad knee throb—which is why when we left the hospital, Mary Ellen was feeling pretty good about everything.

Swim program expands

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Aquatic Center is offering two after-school programs for elementary-age swimmers of all abilities. The center opened fitness the swim lessons to all elementary students because of the change in the Zionsville Community Schools schedule this year.

The aquatic center will replace its Swim Brown into Kindergarten program with a new program available for all elementary students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

The program offers swim lessons for less advanced students who can’t swim 25 yards continuously. It will focus on water orientation and various strokes.

The aquatic center also will offer a swim team for more advanced swimmers. The lessons will focus on stroke mechanics, technique and endurance.

Students will meet once a week for swim or swim team lessons. The cost is $125 to $150 for a six-week course.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to open the love of swimming to more students through the school and get them prepared for life-long swimming,” said Lisa Brown, aquatics directors for the Zionsville Aquatic Center.

The swim team lessons will culminate in an informal swim meet at the end of the session between the elementary schools.

ZCHS buses will pick students up from their schools at 2:30 p.m. and deliver them to the aquatic center.

The lessons will involve 30 minutes of coaching followed by supervised free play. Students will be ready for parent pick-up at 4 p.m.

Registration for the first set of programs ends Sept. 18. Five sessions will be available from September to May. The Zionsville Aquatics Center is at Door 31 behind ZCHS at 1000 Mulberry St. For information or to register, visit aquatic.zionsvilleeaglerec.com.

CHS graduate Raben returns to direct ATI musical

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Actors Theatre of Indiana co-founder Don Farrell has been hoping to get Larry Raben to come home for some time.

“The resume and credentials he has and what he has accomplished in the professional world and in the Broadway world is real Raben astounding,” Farrell said.

“We’re happy to have him at ATI making his debut as a director with us. I’ve been trying to get him here for awhile but it hasn’t worked out because he’s been so busy. It’s worked out because he still has family and friends in the area.”

Actors Theatre of Indiana will present “La Cage Aux Folles” from Sept. 15 to Oct. 1 at the 200-seat Studio Theater in the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

There are 13 performances scheduled for the play, which has mature content and parental guidance is suggested.

The story, based on a play by Jean Poiret and a book by Harvey Fierstein, revolves around a gay couple, Georges and Albin, who run a drag night club in St. Tropez, where Albin is the star performer, Zaza. Farrell plays the role of Albin.

Raben, a 1981 Carmel High School graduate who is based in Los Angeles, directed Farrell in “Forever Plaid” at Beef & Boards in 1996. That was the only other time Raben directed in the Indianapolis area.

“I’m glad I could come work with ATI and get another chance to direct Don,” Raben said. “He’s a wonderful friend and a fun actor. He’s just great to work with.”

Raben directed “La Cage Aux Folles” two years ago for San Diego Musical Theatre in 2015.

“We had to pare the cast down to have it make financial sense for this space,” Raben said. “We cut two of the Cagelles (drag performers), so there are four instead of six. You can focus on them a little more easily and they pop up more

as individuals. It’s making it a strong production. I’m loving how it feels in this space. It feels much stronger to me than when I directed it in a 1,400-seat theatre.”

Raben had been in the Center for the Performing Arts once before on a tour.

“It’s a stunning facility and I’m thrilled it’s right here where I graduated from high school,” said Raben, who was a member of the Ambassadors, the mixed show choir, at CHS. “I’ve felt very fortunate to make my entire adult living as an actor and director. Up to a few years ago, I was performing 70 percent and directing 30 percent. This year I’ll be on stage 30 percent and directing 70 percent.”

All participants, including the bands, homeowners and organizers, are volunteers from Carmel and surrounding areas.

The first PorchFest was held in Ithaca, N.Y., in 2007 and has spread to cities across the U.S. and Canada.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said PorchFest has been a great addition to the city’s active events schedule.

“It highlights other lesser-known streets in the district to show the great uptown neighborhood that comprises the Arts & Design District,” Brainard stated.

The five board members, gallery who serve as co-owners, are Kim Greene, Marie Reamer, Nancy Keating, Deb Slack and Anna Afshar.

All are Carmel residents, except Afshar, who lives in Fishers.

“We’ll have up to 15 artists exhibiting here,” Greene said. “We’re very excited to be part of the Carmel Arts (and Design) District. We knew the district is ready for something different, and we’re excited to bring that.”

The gallery is in the spot at 111 Main St. where ArtSplash Gallery formerly was based. Greene said the owner retired and moved to Florida.

The group has changed the name to Art on Main Gallery & Gifts, and the women worked together to paint and design the space. The gallery, which recently opened, will have a grand opening at 6 p.m. Sept. 16.

“We are going to be offering a lot of classes, and other galleries do not,” Greene said.

Keating said the gallery’s motto is engage, inspire and instruct.

Keating and Reamer are Indiana Artisans, which are Hoosiers recognized for careful attention to detailed knowledge of a craft and an entrepreneurial spirit. Two other Indiana Artisans, Peter Falk and Lynne Medsker, will have their work on display at the gallery.

“Case Design Remodeling (owned by Greene’s husband, Larry) donated by removing a wall. My husband (Russ Barton) is buying us a computer,” Reamer said. “Everybody has all pitched in with time and labor.”

Artist Carol Wagner and her husband, Tim, donated $1,000 to help with the start-up.

Beer Pancakes Ingredients: 2 cups pancake mix, 2 bottles of beer, buttery spray, one pint of sour cream, butter Preparation: In a large plastic bottle, funnel in 2 cups of mix and then add 1 1/2 bottles of beer. Mix ingredients together with a wooden spoon handle or other rod until smooth. The night before, make one pancake like a crepe by rocking, in a nonstick pan, to keep it thin. Background Info: This 1980s home, in the Queens Manor subdivision in Carmel, was in need of some modernization. The original kitchen and living area were confined and didn’t allow much space to entertain guests.

Before problems: The original kitchen and living spaces were divided by a wall. Bulky built-in shelving crowded the space, making it feel small. Inconsistent flooring and ceiling treatments created a choppy look throughout the lower level. The lighting plan in the kitchen and living areas was insufficient for daily use.

1. The biggest transformation came from removing the wall between the kitchen and living room and replacing it with bar seating for a casual dining area.

2. The next significant change was removing the original built-ins and replacing them with modern cabinetry for more efficient storage.

3. Additional changes included removing the bulkheads in the kitchen and adding a coffered ceiling throughout the lower level of the home, creating a cohesive space.

4. There was a major transformation in light, which was a result of a new lighting plan throughout, in addition to removing the walls that blocked natural light.

Space wars: How many Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt How many spaces should go after a period: one or two? Let’s talk about typewriters. grammar guy A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, people learned to type on manual typewriters. If this describes you, you likely learned to add two spaces after a period. That’s because manual typewriters used monospaced type, in which each character takes up the same amount of horizontal space.

Adding two spaces after a period allowed for better readability.

Most fonts on computers utilize what’s called proportional type. This means skinny letters like “i” and “l” are closer to each other, as opposed to wider letters like “w” and “m”. So, unless you’re a hipster who is using a typewriter in a public place, use one space after the end of a sentence.

Does it matter? Great question. If the argument for double spacing is readability, then in the case of our modern computer fonts, which use proportional spacing, you do not need two spaces. If you use two spaces, you might be giving the impression that technology warped off into hyper-

speed while you missed the ship because you stayed to hear the end of the cantina band’s interstellar set.

Back in high school I chose Courier New (a monospaced font) to type papers in my English class. This took a 3 ½-page paper (on a book I skimmed, at best) in Times New Roman or Arial (which are proportional fonts) and stretched into a 5-pager. I’m sure my English teacher rolled her eyes when she saw all the extra space. However, it did allow her extra room to write things like “next time, try harder” and “disappointing!” in the margins.

If you instinctively tap the space bar twice after the end of a sentence, you have two options: Either employ the find-andreplace feature in your word processing software to replace all instances of two spaces with one space, or train yourself to slice your spaces in half with your glowing laser sword like the galaxy depends on it.

Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time Youth Advocate responsible for crisis response, prevention and intervention services for youth victims of crime, family violence and sexual assault. Services include individual and group facilitation for child survivors (ages 5-13) of family violence and sexual assault.

Duties: Provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Facilitate at least two support groups for children (ages 5-13), which may include primary and secondary victims of family violence, as well as a family group. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and provide coverage to the Child Advocacy Center.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.

Competitive compensation package including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, paid holidays, and professional development. Salary commensurate with education and experience (starting salary - $16/hour).
