Rapid growth continues in Anson area

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com With the Aug. 27 opening of ATI Physical Therapy at 6058 Whitestown Pkwy., and the Whitestown Pet DEVELOPMENT Wellness Clinic at 7113 Whitestown Pkwy., 50 businesses now call the Whitestown Parkway area home. Nearly all of the businesses are less than 3 years old.

ATI is part of the Shoppes at Anson development, built by Midland Atlantic Properties.

The greater Anson development began gaining momentum in 2011 and drastically impacted the Whitestown retail and residential landscape, paving the way for future area development. In 2015, the area saw an influx in growth that continues.

“It’s really amazing to think about how much that particular stretch of road has changed in just the past three years,” said Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown.

ATI is the official physical therapy organization of the Chicago Cubs. It helped Cubs’ star Kyle Schwarber rehab in time for the decisive Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. The Whitestown office is a branch of the parent company.

ATI and the Pet Wellness Clinic aren’t the only new businesses on Whitestown Parkway. Qdoba is set to open this month and Hot Box Pizza plans to open by late September or early October.

are now available for our residents,” Sumner said. “As a resident myself, I know my family loves having such a variety of dining options now. When we moved here, there were just a few choices if we wanted to eat out and stay in our community. Now, we have so many options to cater to whatever we’re in the mood for. Once the Shoppes at Whitestown retail center is complete, and with the Little League Central Region Headquarters coming to Whitestown, we’ll soon have a lot more visitors coming to our community who will be dining in our restaurants along Whitestown Parkway.”

Sumner said the influx of new businesses

is almost too much to keep up with but is a good problem to have.

“I schedule the ribbon cuttings for our new businesses, so it’s been kind of crazy for me trying to keep up. Incredibly, we’ve done close to 30 ribbon cuttings this year alone,” Sumner said. “We’ve had a couple months this year that we’ve had four new businesses open in a single month. But I love being able to offer these ribbon cuttings. Our new business owners really appreciate the warm welcome, and our residents count on me to let them know when a new business has opened in Whitestown.”

Council approves 80-acre zoning change

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com A proposal to rezone 80 acres at 5190 South SR 267 was approved by a unanimous 5-0 vote at the Sept. 4 DEVELOPMENT Zionsville Town Council meeting. On Aug. 20, the proposal went before the Plan Commission and was approved.

Becknell Services LLC will change the acre-

age zoning from rural agriculture to light industrial in order to build a large warehouse at the northeast corner of SR 267 and 550 South.

INDOT has planned an interchange at 550 South and I-65. Within that area is a mixture of industrial, agricultural and residential zoning.

The land directly south and west of the property is comprised almost entirely of homes and farmland while the land north and east is fully developed. Beginning in July, Becknell representatives met with surround-

ing homeowners and agreed to create a 50foot buffer yard that includes a 6-foot berm, heavily landscaped with 74 canopy trees, 119 ornamental trees, 220 evergreen trees and 441 shrubs. All operations will be contained within the building.

Some neighboring residents have opposed the proposal, citing water drainage issues caused by recent industrial growth. They fear flooding will increase as development continues.

Town to hold NorthSouth Connector public meeting news@currentzionsville.com The Town of Zionsville will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18 in the St. Vincent Community CONSTRUCTION Room at Zionsville’s Town Hall to present the design of the North-South Connector road project.

The roadway segment will connect the intersection of Oak Street and CR 850 East/ Cooper Road with CR 875 East to the north, also known as the North-South Connector.

The connector design is being finalized and proposes a roundabout at the intersection of 850 East/Cooper Road and Oak Street and a roundabout at the intersection of CR 875 East and Whitestown Road/CR 500 South.

The project includes a 10-foot wide, multi-use path along the east side of the new road.

Renderings and plans prepared by the project engineer will be on display. Staff and project engineers will be present to answer questions. “(This is) a chance for people to come and look at renderings and maps from the project, provided by the engineers,” said Amanda Vela, director of communications and community relations for the Town of Zionsville. “If (there is) any input or feedback from homeowners and neighbors, they have a chance to say something. This is a chance to come and take a look before everything is finalized.”

The connector was proposed in the 2009 Transportation Plan for the Town of Zionsville. It was amended in 2010 and finalized in 2011.

“Our street department and the mayor will be there. This is the opportunity to talk to them if (residents) have any concerns, although we don’t foresee any,” Vela said.

DISPATCH School supply drive — David Weekley Homes recently hosted its fourth annual school supply drive in 17 cities across the nation.

Locally, school supplies were collected for Teachers’ Treasures, which obtains and distributes school supplies to teachers in Marion County and surrounding school districts to provide to students in need. In addition, a grant of $3,500 from The David Weekley Family Foundation will be used to purchase eight new laptops for the organization.

Historical Society dissolving

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com The board of the Zionsville Historical Society, established in 1962, has voted to dissolve the SULLIVANMUNCE organization.

The assets, which include the complete historic archives and the group’s remaining funds, will be donated to the SullivanMunce Cultural Center.The SullivanMunce houses historical items from Zionsville, including genealogical records, photographs and artifacts.

“The SullivanMunce board voted to become the steward of our historic archive,” said Lynne Manning, president of the Zionsville Historical Society. “Once our organization is officially dissolved, we will make them a designated gift of our remaining funds, meaning it will be used for history programming in the 2019-2020 time frame.”

Imo Dunn, Manning’s grandmother, was the first president of the Zionsville Historical Society.

“I’m incredibly proud of all the work Zionsville Historical Society has done to promote and encourage an interest in local history,” Manning said. “I know that my

grandmother would be proud of what we have accomplished.”

Through the decades, the Historical Society has primarily been known for researching and erecting historical markers around town; supporting Maplelawn Farmstead when it was designated as an Historic District; and placing a time capsule in Lincoln Park to be opened in 2076. It also initiated a Century Structures program recognizing architectural preservation of local buildings at least 100 years old.

Ralph Stacy, who has led the Century Structures program for the Historical Society for 30 years, said he would be open to assisting in the future.

Stacy’s children attended historical society meetings growing up and were members, gaining an appreciation for Zionsville history.

When discussion of dissolving began, the Historical Society wanted to make sure its assets went to an organization that shared its mission and determined that SullivanMunce was a good fit.

“Our members have worked very hard over the years. Local history is a passion we all share,” Manning said. “We feel that SullivanMunce is a great home and will be a great steward for all the work we’ve done over the years.”

Community chalkboards share residents’ thoughts

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Rocks because… everything is walkable, everyone is nice and schools are awesome, according to a PUBLIC ART new chalkboard sign installed behind town hall.

Residents are invited to share their own thoughts about Zionsville by writing in chalk on a public community board. The 4-by-6-foot board along the Big 4 Trail features the hashtag #ZionsvilleRocks.

Similar boards have popped up throughout the United States the last few decades, inspiring passersby to express their feelings, such as, “I wish I had the courage to…,” or, “Before I die ...,” to collect public input for the use of nearby spaces or alleyways.

Megan Swain, Boone County Economic Development Corporation’s community development director, initiated the local implementation. She was inspired by a similar project in New Orleans. The “Before I die…” community board was created by a Louisiana artist to start a conversation and

“I transformed it into, ‘I love my town’ boards,” Swain said.

A chalkboard also has been placed in Whitestown near the downtown intersection with plans to add more in other Boone County towns. Whitestown’s hashtag is #WhitestownProud.

A recent Boone County community development survey showed that residents are most interested in green spaces, trails and public art.

“It goes hand-in-hand with our strategic plan,” said Molly Whitehead, Boone EDC executive director. “It creates some good opportunities to tie those wish list items together.”

The idea was brought to officials in both towns. Town leaders “jumped on the idea,” according to Whitehead. Indy’s Pro Graphix partnered with the Boone County EDC to provide the boards at a reduced rate.

The boards are checked periodically to remove impolite language, but the community is asked to assist in erasing anything that might not be family friendly.

Jog-a-Thon funds fill gaps

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Each year, a group of students donning a rainbow of colors raises money for the Parent Teacher OrganizaFUNDRAISER tions for each Zionsville elementary school.

Wearing different colored shirts signifying grade level, preschoolers through fourth-graders will spend Sept. 26 running laps around their schools after asking family and friends to donate money on a flat- or per-lap basis.

The money supports the PTOs to provide items to enhance classroom learning.

“We want people to know, and our families to know, that the funds are used in the classroom for things that the kids use every day,” said Maritzka Hoone, Boone Meadow Elementary’s PTO president and Jog-a-Thon chair.

Hoone said that as the newest school in the district, Boone Meadow’s PTO has needed to fund more than other schools.

The Boone Meadow student population has more than doubled from approximately 200 children when it opened in 2013 to 540 today.

“When our schools grow, how do we raise more money?” Hoone said.

Hoone said that because Zionsville is the lowest-funded school district in the state based on a per-student calculation, PTOs fill in the gaps for teachers.

“I think our kids would be at a disadvantage without these things,” Hoone said.

Boone Meadow PTO covered the expense of an outdoor shelter on its playground to provide shade in the treeless area; provided classroom technology devices; and has supplied teacher-planning materials.

All Zionsville PTOs cover similar expenses and cover the expense of buses for elementary school field trips, significantly reducing the cost parents would otherwise pay.

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Boone County residents, Habitat for Humanity volunteers and brewery enthusiasts gathered Aug. 30 to dedicate “The House that Beer Built” to its new owner, Sarah Burns, and her daughter, Hazel Burns. “The House that Beer Built” was one of Boone County Habitat for Humanity’s three campaigns in 2018. Burns is the event coordinator for the Town of Whitestown and a single mom who was struggling to find housing for her family.

The home was built with the help of local breweries. The campaign gave local restaurants and breweries the opportunity to host fundraising events, with beer sales helping fund the nowfinished Whitestown home.

“The kindness I have encountered in this organization has been lifechanging for me,” Burns said. “It’s a turning point in my life.”

Brewery enthusiasts, or “beer builders” as the project crew calls them, took a special interest in this project and volunteered to fundraise and help build the home. SULLIVANMUNCE “Our son, John, in his senior year of college reassured me, ‘You don’t have to be able to paint. You just have to work hard. It is 80 percent hard work,’” Templeton said.

“That was all I needed. I knew how to work hard.”

Forty years later, Templeton, 90, will have her most recent art on display in Zionsville.

It was recently exhibited at the Indiana State Museum.

“Lois at 90: Recent work by Lois Main Templeton” will run from Sept. 14 through Oct. 27 at SullivanMunce Cultural Center.

The free exhibit shows that her new work incorporates a sense of space.

“Do you notice how airy my present work is becoming? Even (in) spite of patches of considerable energy?” she said. “This, I think, is the contribution of old age.”

Templeton has described herself as an action painter, a style in which paint is spontaneously applied to canvas.

Templeton graduated magna cum laude from the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis but it wasn’t a simple path.

“Painting did not come naturally to me,” she said.

living in California. After moving to Indianapolis with her family, she decided to enter art school.

After graduation, Templeton was among the early artists to occupy the Faris Building in downtown Indianapolis. She now resides in Maine, where she continues to paint, but many of the walls of her home remain as blank as sections of her latest art.

“I now savor large, open, empty spaces,” she said.

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Since opening March 1, Mountain House Maternity Home in Whitestown has welcomed its first infant and is CHARITY preparing for growth. Founder Lori Buzzetti is organizing a second fundraiser to help continue the mission of her organization, So Big. The Sept. 27 “Born to Sparkle” fundraiser at the Golf Club of Indiana in Whitestown will directly help the Mountain House by covering overhead expenses and food for residents.

During the evening, guests will be entertained by comedian Jonnie W. and a caricature artist.

Tickets are $75 and are available at sobig. org/events.html. An online silent auction and a live auction will be offered at the event. Some of the larger items for the live auction include a trip to Sanibel Island, chairs from RG Décor and a golf outing for four.

Last year’s “Born to Sparkle” event raised $110,000, just under half of So Big’s annual budget. This year, Buzzetti wants to raise $150,000.

The Mountain House provides shelter, food and clothing for homeless expectant women and their children. It also offers lessons in life skills to help them get back on their feet, whether through a career path or furthering their education.

The first mother and her infant have found new housing. Two more expectant mothers will move into Mountain House

within the next week. The facility has room for up to four mothers. When the next group of women enter the program, they’ll participate in Wheeler Mission’s Transform Class.

All of the programs are led by volunteers.

“We’re just taking our time,” Buzzetti said. “We may take three and just catch our breath. Since they’ll all be new, it’s going to take some time to get them settled.”

Dull’s Tree Farm hosts Great Pumpkin Run Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown will be the rustic setting Sept. 29 for a fall 5K race, The Great Pumpkin Run. Participants will wind FITNESS through a trail that covers the farm grounds. Afterward, they can end their day at the farm celebrating fall with wagon rides, apple cider, corn mazes, pumpkin picking and more.

“This is our third year hosting the run,” said Lucas Dull, manager of the fall season for Dull’s Tree Farm, called Dull’s Pumpkin Harvest. “We usually end up with a little over 2,000 participants. The point is to do a fall-themed run.”

Participants can add an extra challenge to their run for an additional fee.

“Some of the runners will carry pumpkins with them throughout the run,” Dull said.

“They call that the ‘tough pumpkin.’”

At the end of the race, participants receive fall-themed gifts.

“They get a small pumpkin and a glass of apple cider after the run,” Dull said. “Runners come onto the farm for free after the run to enjoy the rest of the day.”

Christ Lutheran Church to host Pop-Up Charity Farmer’s Market

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Christ Lutheran Church will host a Pop-Up Charity Farmer’s Market Sept. 16 from noon to 3 p.m. at 600 N PHILANTHROPY Ford Rd. in Zionsville.

Church members will donate their time by making items to sell and staffing booths.

“In years past, we have had a congregation-wide day of service where the whole congregation participates in various service activities around the area. Instead of doing that, we decided to (have) the congregation members use their special talents to make items to sell at the market,” said Julia Goldberg, communications administrator at Christ Lutheran Church.

All proceeds will benefit charities such as the Boone County Caring Center, Boone County Habitat for Humanity, Lutheran Disaster Response and Lutheran Child and

Family Services.

“Each person who has a table can choose from a list of organizations we have supported in the past,” Goldberg said.

Shoppers will be given a piece of paper to total their items and pay at the end. Individual booth sales will be tracked so donations will go to the charity chosen by each vendor. Items include an array of hand-crafted and homegrown goods.

“We’ve got people doing baked goods, vegetables from their gardens, spices and herbs, knitted items, sewn and quilted pieces, walking sticks, bath bombs and more,” Goldberg said.

Church youth members will wash cars for a donation. There also will be live music by twin brothers Nicholas and Christopher Burrus, who are Zionsville Community High School graduates.

“This is our first year for it and we are really excited to see where it’s going to go.

We just want as many people as possible to come,” Goldberg said.

The park where Lincoln spoke Residents seek improvements to historic site

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com In February 1861, president-elect Abraham Lincoln, traveling by train, made an unplanned stop in Zionsvilles during his WhistleStop tour. He was on his way to his inauCOVER STORY gruation in Washington, D.C. The site, known today as Lincoln park, was established to commemorate the event.

Lincoln Park now hosts weddings, summer concerts, playdates and picnics, among other activities.

Although only a half acre, the park and gazebo are among Zionsville’s treasured historic sites. Yet, some residents say they believe the park, managed by the Zionsville Parks Dept., hasn’t received adequate care in recent years.

Among concerns are dense, untrimmed trees and bushes; the lack of grass and flowers in certain areas; and drainage issues creating the beginning of a trench through the park and pooling around split-rail fence posts, established to give a nod to Lincoln’s roots.

Zionsville resident Ralph Stacy voiced his concerns during a town council meeting in late 2017 when he questioned the allocations in the town budget.

The Stacy family and other residents revitalized the park after World War II when it was crumbling, and still feel responsible for its appearance.

Landscaping by volunteers in past years may have created part of the issue, according to Matt Dickey, Zionsville parks director.

The shade caused by mature trees has impacted areas of the park, preventing daylilies and knockout roses from blooming and grass from growing.

Parks Board President Jeff Edmondson appreciates the efforts residents such as the Stacys have made and said the park is a priority in the Town of Zionsville’s Five Year Parks Master Plan, which was approved earlier this year. “(Stacy has) put hours into (Lincoln Park) and that’s some of his legacy,” Edmondson said. “He didn’t have to sell me. It’s seen by hundreds of people every day.”

Specifically, the plan proposes several improvements to the park, including a new perimeter fence, replacing the existing electricity, including conduits and routine maintenance to provide park upkeep.

“The park contains many large, older trees which present maintenance challenges for the Parks Department,” the Five Year Parks Plan states. “Many of the maintenance issues within the park are caused by the trees which provide a large part of the character for the park.”

The plan proposes replacing the fence with a metal, decorative fence to upgrade the aesthetics and lower maintenance needs.

The overall goal is to refresh the park, according to Edmondson and Dickey, with long-lasting results.

“No decisions have been made,” Edmondson said. “That’s part of the process.”

cause of location and expense of upkeep. Of the 400 acres managed by the Zionsville Parks Dept., 57 percent were donated, and topography dictates whether the park can have a more manicured appearance.

Zionsville Parks Dept. has three full-time maintenance staff after adding a certified arborist two years ago. Mowing is handled by contracted companies, and some maintenance, such as tree removal, is completed with assistance from the Zionsville Street and Stormwater Dept.

Mayor Tim Haak said that as new parks are added, the staff will need to grow.

According to Haak, there may be a larger plan for First Street, depending on other downtown development. The redesign of First Street would impact sidewalks and the fence surrounding the park, so no changes will occur to the perimeter of the park until the street plan moves forward.

People calling for more upkeep at Lincoln Park say the location makes it an important draw to visitors and locals, and therefore should be a priority.

• In 1861 President-elect Abraham Lincoln was traveling to Washington, D.C., for his presidential inauguration. The train wasn’t expected to stop in Zionsville but the engine needed water, so Lincoln spoke briefly to a waiting crowd late on Feb. 11 from the back of the train at the station.

• Lincoln’s body passed through in 1865 on the way to his funeral in Springfield, Ill. • The area around the train station became a municipal park spanning several blocks and had a tennis court. It was known as Depot Park, Zion Park or City Park.

• In 1936 on Flag Day, the Lions Club installed a stone commemorating Lincoln’s stop.

• During World War II the park no longer was a town priority and the bandstand, added decades earlier, was crumbling.

• In 1944 it was sold and removed.

• Finally in 1952, the Zionsville Women’s Club spearheaded a redevelopment of the park.

It was renamed Lincoln Park and residents brought trees, shrubs, bulbs and fertilizer for revitalization.

• The Kiwanis Club and other residents helped maintain the park for several decades.

• In 1961, half the park containing tennis courts was sold to build a new post office, now an F.C. Tucker location. The other half was in danger of becoming a parking lot but the Town Board of Trustees voted instead to establish Lincoln Memorial Park as a historical monument.

• The gazebo was donated to the town in 1986 after it appeared in the Indianapolis Flower and Patio Show.

• In 1998, the park underwent a facelift which included new brick walkways and landscaping with assistance from the Rotary Club.

We all reach that tipping point in life – the one where our lives go from the endless activities of our children and families to more quiet times at home. Gone are the study tables and gym bags, replaced by empty rooms and open seats for evening meals. It is the natural way of things, but doesn’t make it easy. Rightly, the youngsters are filled with anticipation, and perhaps apprehension, as their lives lurch forward. New sights, sounds, rights and responsibilities flood in and are processed and soon mastered.

Unmoving, our days shift little. We walk the same halls. We sit in the same chairs.

We live the same. Except, that the little ones that used to fill our homes with noise and joy are either away or cloistered in their rooms confronting the homework and required tasks of the coming day.

Flummoxed by the concern expressed by a younger sibling, a recently returning college student expressed her frustration, “Why does my little brother care so much that I’m gone? I’ll be back at Thanksgiving!”

True. But while the big sister’s days are filled with new and more, little brother is confronted with absence and less.

As summer smolders to an end and the streets are increasingly littered with falling leaves, we return to our winter cadence. We wake, and retire, at more consistent hours.

The sun streams in only as we are preparing for our days, and nightfall arrives hours before the nightly news. Even as we hope for the next chapter, we long for that which is forever passed. Yet, do we really want for things to stay the same? Isn’t the only thing worse than watching them mature and leave the house is having them not?

I never thought I’d be comparing my husband, Doo, to my president-crush Lyndon Johnson, but apparently once your life as a dance mom ends, you resort to HUMOR weird topics.

As an American history teacher, I “fall in love” with historical figures all the time. Alexander Hamilton, Martin Luther King Jr., Ruth Bader Ginsburg – they each make my Top Five. But during the last few years, I’ve consistently come back to LBJ as my No. 1. The way the 6-foot-4, foul-mouthed Texan, who came to the presidency in the wake of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, essentially bullied Congress into passing some of the greatest pieces of domestic legislation ever, and then crashed down amid the chaos and confusion of Vietnam, speaks to me in ways that other dead people, or soon-to-die people, don’t.

And I just now realized the reason I’m obsessed with LBJ is because I’m attracted to bad boys with good hearts. Case in point, my husband. The direct opposite of me, he drinks, occasionally smokes and can still party like it’s 1999. But he also isn’t afraid to fight for things he deems right. During Labor Day weekend, for example, one of our sisters-in-law returned from a walk, upset that some old lady had blocked her from going down a street which, though marked “private,” has always been open to the community. Doo was immediately up in arms, beer in hand of course. “Let’s protest! I’m going down there right now! Free the lane!”

Clearly, not as important as equality for all, but the passion is the same. And that’s why I love Doo (and LBJ).

Ugh, I miss dance.

Daydreaming about woolgathering Commentary by Ward Degler I was having coffee with a friend the other day when my mind drifted away from our conversation.

PLAIN TALK “Did you hear what I said?” he asked.

“Sorry,” I muttered. “I must have been woolgathering.”

“Huh? What does that mean?” he asked.

“Daydreaming,” I said.

“Oh,” he said with a frown.

I wasn’t sure whether he frowned because I wasn’t listening to him or because he didn’t like my definition of woolgathering. I decided I’d better look it up in case it ever happened again.

Turns out, the phrase comes from 16th-century England, where there were people who wandered along fences and pastures gathering fragments of wool that had gotten caught when the sheep walked by. An activity, according to one observer at the time, that requires much wandering to little purpose.

A more modern definition calls woolgathering indulging in wandering fantasies and purposeless thinking. Webster cuts to the chase and simply calls it daydreaming.

Closer to home, the 23rd annual Woolgathering Festival will occur September

15-16 at Young’s Jersey Dairy near Yellow Springs, Ohio. It promises to have plenty of music, fun, food and woolgathering.

Apparently, wool can be gathered from sheep, of course, but also from llamas, alpacas (which look a lot like llamas), cashmere goats and Angora rabbits. All of them will be showing off their wool at the festival.

Now, I’m not one to quibble, but the Young’s Jersey Dairy website didn’t say anything about woolgathering from dogs.

And if you should venture north to Shakopee, Minn., in a couple of weeks, the Renaissance Fair usually held there each year will offer a proud example of canine woolgathering.

At least one lady there brushes her sled dog huskies every day, saves the fur and spins it into yarn, which she knits into remarkably warm sweaters. There have been reports, however, that people who wear them have experienced an irresistible desire to run through the snow and howl at the moon.

The Wolfsie house is for sale, and we have settled into a new home just a few blocks away. This was a moving experience, to be sure, but there was nothHUMOR ing settling about it.

Prior to closing on the new house, we did something the builder calls a “celebration walk,” or our opportunity to nitpick every paint blemish, wobbly cabinet door and crooked electric socket before we coughed up the last portion of our down payment. My wife researched what to look for before we took possession. She wanted to ensure the structure’s soundness, and that there were no leaks or strange odors.

I’m not sure I could pass that test.

Our home of the past 35 years is going on the market. We consider ourselves neat and clean people, but when we started pulling furniture and appliances from against the walls, we found old keys, pennies and Bic pens everywhere. There were dog biscuits under the couch, and we haven’t had a dog for five years. When we found a clean diaper behind the washer, I gave it to our 31-year-old son.

I told Mary Ellen every night for 35 years that I was tired and was going “up” to bed. I couldn’t say that anymore because we don’t have a second level. Now I have to say, “I’m going across to bed.”

“That’s crazy, Dick. Just say ‘I’m going to bed.’”

“It’s a hard habit to break. It would be like all of a sudden having to say, ‘Good night, Vivian,’ instead of, ‘Good night, Mary Ellen.’ That’s why I’ll never remarry.”

The second evening, Mary Ellen caught me pacing, confused.

“What can’t you find, Dick? Glasses?

Phone? Wallet?”

“No, the bathroom. I keep turning the wrong way.”

We just enjoyed our first meal in our new kitchen. My wife asked, “Do you think we’ll ever move again?”

“Mary Ellen, this house will be perfect for us for another 30 years.”

Which was a subtle way of saying, “Over my dead body.”

LEGION LOOK The attacks that changed our nation Commentary by Rick Baum, USMC veteran and Zionsville American Legion chaplain September 11, 2001, changed the United States. Americans were shocked when our country was attacked by terrorists on our own soil. Television stations aired horrific footage of planes exploding into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Military fighter jets were patrolling over our nation’s capital. Our Armed Forces were placed on high alert. The nation was facing fear and uncertainty.

We remember the sacrificial heroism of the first responders, the rubble at Ground Zero, rescue dogs searching for survivors, funerals honoring the 2,997 dead, bagpipers playing “Amazing Grace” and the sorrowful tears shed by those left behind.

In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush proclaimed a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the victims of the attacks.

The House of Representatives and Senate passed a joint resolution declaring Sept. 11 as Patriot Day. On this day, Americans are encouraged to fly the nation’s flag at halfstaff. Patriot Day reminds us that America must remain vigilant to stand against the many enemies of freedom.

America has changed since Sept. 11, 2001. The freedoms once enjoyed are not the same. The Homeland Security Act was ushered in a year later. Government surveillance and collection of information has become necessary for security.

This Patriot Day, remember the people who lost their lives. Remember their surviving families who are haunted each anniversary of the day that forever changed their lives.

Zionsville businesses soon to build new offices

Two family owned Zionsville businesses will soon have a new shared location to call home.

DEVELOPMENT Storen Financial and Zionsville Eye Care closed on a lot in front of Town Hall in late August. Construction on the two-story building is scheduled to begin in October and take a year to complete.

“Storen Financial and Zionsville Eye Care were bursting at the seams in both of their businesses, and each business needed to consider new space. Three years ago, Dr. (Nick) Garn started researching the available sites within Zionsville and kept close tabs on the land in front of Town Hall,” said Kim Storen, managing accountant and small business consultant for Storen Financial.

“That piece of ground was the first choice for both companies. The partners have a similar management style and similar tastes, so the decision to build together was an easy decision.”

The all-brick building will be more than 27,000 square feet. Zionsville Eye Care will occupy the majority of the first floor with an additional 2,300 square feet for another business. Storen will occupy the majority of

the second floor with two additional spaces for tenants and a shared conference space for meetings and seminars. A team of Zionsville businesses, including builder RL Turner and architect David Rausch, are slated to work on the project.

“Both businesses were experiencing tremendous growth and the current facilities were inadequate for the near-future,” Storen said. “The new building will allow both businesses to provide more products and services for their clients with a more convenient location and ample parking.”

Although other options were considered, the two businesses agreed the property would be the perfect location.

“Zionsville Eye Care is grateful to our patients and the leadership in the community for making this next phase possible,” Garn said. “With our community partners at Storen Financial, we can’t wait to contribute even more back to this town we all love.”

Feedback from the town and clients has been positive, according to Storen Financial owner Greg Storen.

“The town administration led by (Mayor) Tim Haak and (Director of Planning and Economic Development) Wayne DeLong have been so supportive and excited for us, and we are looking forward to being neighbors,” he said.

Hendricks Regional Health to open endoscopy suite

Hendricks Regional Health opened an endoscopy suite in its Danville hospital in late July. The new, expanded DIAGNOSTICS space includes new equipment, new patient beds, state-of-the-art cardiac monitoring equipment and a tube system for quicker test results.

The hospital’s goal is to improve patient privacy, access and comfort.

According to Hendricks Regional Health, the hospital has received 558 new patients from Zionsville and 198 new patients from Whitestown within the past two years -- including 373 within the past six months.

Each year, about 70 million Americans suffer from digestive diseases, many of which are treatable and even preventable through regular screening. Hendricks Regional Health’s Endoscopy Suite diagnoses and provides therapies for digestive health disorders such as acid reflux; Crohn’s disease; gastritis; peptic ulcers; gallstones; and appendicitis.

“The majority of our patients are coming in for that first colonoscopy to make sure that there are no pre-cancerous issues,” said Lynn Turner, nursing director for endoscopy at Hendricks Regional Health.

“When you turn age 50, it’s recommended that you have a colonoscopy as a general health screening. One of the most significant ways to impact colon cancer is early diagnosis.”

Turner said most of the time, patients have not been diagnosed and are having gastrointestinal symptoms that have gone on for a long time. Endoscopy is a procedure by which physicians run a small, lighted scope through the GI system to look for signs of abnormality.

“We can do other tests that do not utilize scopes,” Turner said. “(Patients) can swallow a camera capsule. It goes through your GI system and takes pictures. This can help diagnose things like ulcers or maybe alert (doctors) to suspicious-looking areas. This is a less invasive way to diagnose.”

The Endoscopy Suite sees close to 20 patients per day and is part of the hospital’s outpatient service. The new areas are completely updated with larger patient rooms which have glass doors for privacy.

“The new space was designed to accommodate more patients and improve access for our community to get in quicker and have an overall improved experience,” Turner said. “That was driven by the needs of our patients and community as well as our expanded community clear up to Zionsville.”

Songbook Hall of Fame to honor Clooney, Van Heusen and Maye

“The whole reason behind the Great American MUSIC Songbook Hall of Fame is really to honor those, first, who helped create the beginning of American popular music, and within that we try to always honor a songwriter, someone who helped create the soundtrack of our life,” Lewis said. “Then we try to honor an iconic performer who sang and performed the music and someone who is still carrying on the tradition of the Great American Songbook and music that lasts beyond the time it was written.”

Actress-singer Rosemary Clooney, Academy Award-winning songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen and cabaret and musical theater star Marilyn Maye will be inducted into the Hall of Fame Sept.

15. Along with singer-actor Chris Isaak, Songbook Youth Ambassadors Finn Sagal (2017) and Lily Rasmussen (2018) will perform at the Songbook Celebration at 8:30 p.m. at the Palladium in Carmel.

Clooney, who died in 2002 at 74, is one of two legend award inductees. She will be represented by her brother, Nick Clooney, who is the father of actor George Clooney.

“Rosemary is one of the most recognizable voices in American popular music,” Lewis said. “Even those who aren’t familiar with her recordings know her from ‘White Christmas’ and her iconic film roles and duets with Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby on the Nelson Riddle albums.”

Van Heusen is honored as the other legend award winner.

“He is a name people might not recognize right away but everyone knows his songs,” Lewis said. “He and one of his longtime writing partners, Sammy Cahn, wrote more than 80 songs recorded by Frank Sinatra. The songs he wrote are still used for commercials, movies and television shows.”

Van Heusen and lyricist Johnny Burke won an award for Best Original Song for “Swinging on a Star” in 1944. Clooney later had

a popular recording of the song as well. Van Heusen and lyricist Cahn won Academy Awards for Best Song for “All the Way” in 1957, “High Hopes” in 1958 and “Call Me Irresponsible.”

Van Heusen, who died in 1990 at 77, will be represented by his nephew Brook Babcock, president of Van Heusen Music Corp.

Maye, who is slated to attend, is still performing regularly at 90. She plans to sing a few numbers.

“Maye is a powerhouse and was a recording star in the ’50s and ’60s,” Lewis said. “She has the distinction of having appeared on the ‘The Tonight Show’ with Steve Allen, and then Johnny Carson, more than any other singer in history. She appeared on the show 76 times.”

Maye recorded several albums for RCA Victor in the 1960s and performed in theater and supper clubs around the nation.

“When rock and roll came in and music tastes changed and supper clubs went away, she never stopped working, but not in as high-profile a setting until a few years ago when she was invited to sing at the New York Cabaret Convention and she brought the house down,” Lewis said. “She began performing all over New York and there was really a renewed interest in her style and her singing. I’ve seen her many times through the years. She sounds as good now as she ever did. She is our new standard award (recipient) because she is still carrying on the legacy.”

Under the theme “Swinging on a Star,” the Songbook Celebration begins with a 5 p.m. cocktail reception, followed by dinner in the concert hall, live auction, program and after-party. Tables seating four to 10 guests for the entire evening are available for purchase at SongbookGala@TheCenterPresents.org.

Tickets for the after-dinner portion start at $100. The tickets include gallery or box seating for the 8:30 p.m. Hall of Fame induction ceremony, followed by Isaak’s headline performance as well as admission to the all-inclusive after-party, with dancing and complimentary drinks and desserts in three uniquely themed rooms from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Carmel PorchFest will feature a variety of free musical acts, ranging from acoustic to electric, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 16.

The first PorchFest was held in Ithaca, N.Y. in 2007. Since then, it has expanded to many cities across the U.S., with Carmel holding its first event in 2014.

There will be solo and ensemble performances at 20 different porches, with three acts on some porches and two on others.

The expected music performers will range from electric to acoustic groups, string quartets and garage bands.

The PorchFest area will be open to foot traffic only. The area is 1st Avenue NW and 2nd Avenue NW between 1st Street NW and 6th Street NW in Old Town Carmel. The area is between Range Line Road and the Monon Trail and north of Main Street and south of 136 Street/Smokey Row Road.

The event is staged by a large group of volunteers from Carmel and surrounding areas.

GHDT presents ‘The Casket Girls’

DANCE “From the get-go we knew we would expand it to a fulllength play,” Gabel said. “After it ran we were definitely happy with it and the audience was, too. We wanted to expand it to a full play, but life and other projects got in the way.”

Now, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre’s full-length production of “The Casket Girls,” a modern gothic vampire ballet, is ready for its debut at 7 p.m. Sept. 21-22 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“I worked with Gregory to craft the story and characters, but my bigger role is the music,” said Gabel, a composer/musician from Simsbury, Conn.

Gabel composed the music.

“There is a little bit of vocals here and there,” Gabel said. “There is an alternative rock style and some orchestral parts, but it’s more rock ’n’ roll. With the vampire element, it’s meant to be an edgier, darker show.”

The ninth annual event is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at Forest Park’s Shelter 1 area. The fundraiser, whose premier sponsor is the Noblesville Township Trustee’s Office, benefits Forest Park Aquatic Center.

“This is one of the older beer-tasting events in central Indiana,” said Baker, a member of the Noblesville Adult Swimming Team Inc., based in Forest Park.

The band will be Indianapolis-based Poparazzi, a high-energy group with two female lead singers, Baker said.

Lady Antebellum set for Ruoff

Scott said Rucker has been a musical hero to Scott and bandmates Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley for several years and became a good friend.

“It’s awesome to be able to be on tour with him and his camp,” Scott said. “Everyone is so kind and gets along great and has a blast. It carries into the live show, which is one of the most collaborative shows we’ve ever had.”

Typically, there are several spontaneous moments.

“One night Darius randomly walked out and did the guitar change for Dave, which was hilarious,” Scott said. “Our opener, Russell Dickerson, has so much energy and such great music. It’s a lot of guys, and I luckily get to be the only girl on the stage every night, which I take as a huge honor.”

Scott said Rucker’s country solo career started around the same time Lady Antebellum was formed in 2006. Rucker gained fame as the lead vocalist for Hootie & the Blowfish.

Scott said they play three or four songs from their 2017 album, “Heart Break,” as well as other fan favorites.

Scott’s husband, Lady Antebellum drummer Chris Tyrrell, is taking the tour off to be with their three daughters, 5-year-old Eisele Kaye and twins Betsy Mack and Emory JoAnn, who were born in January.

Oates to perform at Butler

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The music of Mississippi blues artist John Hurt was rediscovered during the revival of folk music in the 1960s.

CONCERT That caught John Oates’ ear.

“I was very much into the folk music in those days. I saw (Hurt) at Philadelphia Folk Festival and various coffee houses around Philadelphia when I was a kid,” Oates said.

“I was given a chance to play his guitar when it was given to my guitar teacher after he passed away (in 1966). I eventually bought that guitar that he played in the early ‘60s when he was rediscovered.”

Oates, who is accustomed to playing in large arenas and amphitheaters with his music partner Daryl Hall, will perform with The Good Road Band at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Butler University’s 450-seat Schrott Center for the Arts in Indianapolis.

Oates recently wrapped up a Hall & Oates tour, playing in large arenas.

“I just spent five months on tour, playing in front of 10,000 and 15,000 people. You can’t compare that to almost anything,” Oates said. “The balance of having an inti-

mate connection with the audience where I can tell stories and put the songs into context and play a completely different style of music, it’s really great for me. It makes me feel good that I have people accept me on both levels. It’s grounding. It gives you a chance to kind of get your feet back on the ground.”

Oates is touring in support of his album, “Arkansas,” released in January.

Center says thanks Commentary by Jeff McDermott The 2018-19 performance season is kicking into high gear at the Center for the Performing Arts, but before PALLADIUM we get too far along, I want to thank the entire community for all the support that made this past season so successful.

The Center takes seriously its role as an economic catalyst for the City of Carmel and a gathering place for the central Indiana community. It is wonderful to see, after just a few years of operation, how local residents, organizations and businesses have embraced the Center as their own.

During the course of the 2017-18 season at our three venues, 106,450 patrons attended performances presented by the Center, its six resident companies and other arts groups. Those events included 88 Civic Theatre performances; 83 Actors Theatre of Indiana performances; seven Carmel Symphony Orchestra performances; and 16 performances by the Indiana Wind Symphony, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre and Central Indiana Dance Ensemble.

Our own Center Presents series of 47 performances included 14 sellouts at the Palladium, with average paid attendance

increasing 40 percent from the previous year to 920 per event. Subscription sales rose by 23 percent, and first-time visitors accounted for a whopping 37 percent of our ticket sales.

Another key segment of our work in the community is providing education and enrichment opportunities for people of all ages. Last season, those efforts included scores of adult classes in dance, ukulele, speech, standup comedy and vocal performance; nearly 30 interactive music sessions for toddlers and preschoolers; three performing arts day camps; and seven school field trips in which hundreds of students visited the Palladium to explore principles of physics with the Center’s lighting and audio professionals.

Indeed, the Center for the Performing Arts is fulfilling the vision of local leaders who placed the arts at the core of their strategy for building a vibrant community, repeatedly ranked as one of the best places to live in America.

A favorite California winery Commentary by Elizabeth Morse On one of my first trips to Napa Valley, I was lucky to be a guest at Trefethen Family Vineyards. I stayed in WINEderlust their charming guesthouse and enjoyed delicious wine, French Laundry coffee, an enormous hawk that hung out on the deck and knowing that Julia Child also had stayed there. I fell in love with the property and always offered their wine at my restaurant.

This year, Trefethen is celebrating 50 years as one of a few remaining family owned wineries. They grow their grapes and bottle their wines on the estate in the Oak Knoll District. Here are my suggestions: 2017 Trefethen Dry Riesling is always a crowd-pleaser. It isn’t sweet, but the bright fruit offers peach, honey and grapefruit flavors, which gives an impression of sweetness – a perfumey, feminine style. The winery suggests dishes like lemon chicken and seared tuna, while I enjoy it most with Indian food. I dig it with chicken paté and ginger snaps, too. Around $26.

Normally, I don’t love Merlot, but Tre-

fethen’s 2015 is stylistically correct (ahhh!) and elegant. You’ll notice flavors like fresh raspberry and black pepper: silky and sexy.

If you ever grab a BBQ pizza at Some Guys (Indianapolis or Carmel), this wine will turn it into a fancy occasion. Could be pretty perfect with lasagna or a chocolate desert, too. Around $40 I encourage you to splurge on the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a little spendy but hey, you’re worth it. For special evenings featuring red meat (think steak au poivre or filet), it’s spot-on. The aromas of chocolate, coffee and brambly fruit are a bit of a surprise when you taste cherry pie in your glass, distinct oak, a little tannin and a lot of supple. Around $60 Let me know what you think, and cheers!

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 111 W. Main St. #110, Carmel What to get: Debris Po’ Boy Price: $10.99 Anna’s take: Joe’s Next Door is an extension of Joe’s Meat Market in downtown Carmel. The business is a cross a between a deli, local grocery and meat and seafood market. Joe’s Next Door offers hot and cold sandwiches with deli-style sides sold by the pound. I ordered the Debris Po’ Boy, a fusion of a traditional New Orleans po’ boy with spicy remoulade and seasonings with Indiana beef braised in a strong IPA called All Day IPA from Founders Brewing Co. A 5-ounce portion of the braised beef is sandwiched between two airy slices of French batard bread and topped with sunshine yellow heirloom tomatoes, pickled red onions and romaine lettuce. A garlic aioli is smeared on the bottom slice of bread.

Remoulade is spread on the top slice. The bread is toasted on the bottom to add a nice crunch, but it maintains its airiness throughout. The New Orleans-style remou-

lade gives the sandwich a hearty kick of heat. Those with a more sensitive palette can request less remoulade. The sandwich is wrapped in foil and served hot.

Joe’s Next Door is the perfect place to grab a couple of the cold sandwich options and items from its fresh market and head to a local park for an afternoon picnic.

Suggested pairings: A side of the cold street corn salad ($7.99 a pound) pairs excellently with the Debris Po’ boy. The corn salad is similar to elote, or Mexican street corn, but less messy because it has already been shaved off the cob. The salad is a creamy mix of sour cream and sweet corn, which pairs well with a little spice from diced jalapenos. Other ingredients include bell pepper, red onion, cilantro, cumin and paprika. Since the Debris Po’ boy beef is braised in the craft beer, pair the sandwich with a bottle of the IPA, also sold at Joe’s Next Door.

Blueprint for Improvement: Fishers basement fit for a sports fan Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal was to transform the existing basement into a more inviting space where the homeowner can entertain guests.

1. The largest transformation came by creating an entertainment system that allowed watching three sports games at once. Builtin cabinetry was added for storage.

2. In addition, the unfinished area of the basement was transformed into a home theater, making it a perfect place for large groups to gather.

3. There also were several updates made to the basement bar, including new cabinetry and replacing the upper cabinets with floating shelves, making the space feel more open.

4. Additionally, the bar backsplash was replaced with a geometric vinyl wallpaper adding visual interest to the space.

5. New luxury vinyl flooring was added throughout the lower level.

Background info: This home in the Arbor Glen neighborhood of Fishers was still in great condition, but the basement needed some attention. The home was built in 2012. Although the basement was already finished, the owner was looking for a more custom design.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The original basement was only partially finished and felt very dark and crowded.

The unfinished portion was not being utilized by the homeowner. Space for entertaining guests was limited and there weren’t clearly defined spaces.

On the other hand, there’s a long list of adverbs that do not end in “ly.” Keep these words in mind the next time you play Mad Libs on a road trip — they include afterward, never, next, often, and almost. These adverbs are like the honey mustard of sandwich condiments — you might not even think you’re eating mustard because they’re so sweet and discreet.

Adverbs never modify nouns — that’s a job strictly reserved for adjectives. Adjec-

tives are like sentence cheese to the noun’s meat; they make sure the adverb doesn’t touch the noun. You do put the mustard on top of the cheese and not directly on the meat, right? We’re not barbarians, after all.

The further I go into this metaphor, the hungrier I get. In this case, I suppose verbs are veggie toppings like lettuce, tomato and probably pickles.

Adverbs give additional information about when, where or how something happens.

How did Kenny run? Kenny ran quickly. When did Byron start doubting the moon landing?

Byron started doubting the moon landing yesterday. How frequently do you read the newspaper? I read the newspaper often.

Once you start noticing adverbs, you’ll see them everywhere. It’s kind of like buying a car — prior to buying the car, you don’t notice many of the same models on the road, but after you buy it, you see your same car everywhere. Just be careful to not spill any mustard on your new interior.

Mushrooms in the meadow Commentary by Don Knebel Since February 2012, I have written about places I have visited. For this column, No. 300, the distance traveled was about 100 yards.

TRAVEL In the spring of 2009, my wife Jen and I closed on a small cabin in the woods of Brown County and immediately left for Turkey. Upon our return, we began exploring the areas around our cabin, one of which is a grassy hilltop area surrounded by trees. I call this our “meadow,” a word I learned as a toddler from “Little Boy Blue, Come Blow Your Horn” and had no chance to use since. In the meadow, we found what looked like mushrooms, but they were bright yellow.

We both thought that all mushrooms were either brown or white. As we walked around our meadow, we found more brightly colored mushrooms, red ones and blue ones and purple ones and orange ones and green ones and pink ones. We also found white mushrooms covered with black spots and black mushrooms covered with white spots.

Some mushrooms were shaped on top like pancakes and others looked like tiny parasols. Both of us took dozens of pictures of our discoveries. Every year since, our colored mushrooms have reappeared in about mid-June and disappeared about a month later. If the summer is wet enough, as it has been this year, they reappear.

We have learned more about colored mushrooms. There are many varieties in addition to the ones in our meadow and they all have names. Some colored mushrooms are edible and some can kill and there are no easy rules for determining which are which. We have learned something else from our mushrooms. We can always make discoveries traveling around the world, but we also can make discoveries just by paying attention to what is in our own backyards.
