Grand marshal on a mission

This year’s Fall Festival Parade grand marshal is a Montana native whose cowboy hat and love for riding make him a visually fall fest perfect match for the parade’s Wild, Wild West theme.

Bart Colvin, commander of the Zionsville American Legion Post #79, is an Army veteran who spends his spare time ensuring that deceased veterans receive military burial honors.

“The American Legion and I have been working with the Lions Club, and they just thought it was phenomenal what we do,” Colvin said.

What they do is plentiful. The American Legion organizes an annual reunion for the USS Indianapolis survivors, raises funds for families impacted by leukemia or lymphoma, sponsors several Boy and Cub Scout troops, leads a team for Habitat for Humanity, helps a veteran’s home in Lafayette and raises funds for veterans with amputations and PTSD to get specialized treatment at a facility in Colorado.

Then Colvin goes beyond his American Legion duties to also serve as the Indiana State Coordinator for the Missing in America Project, which helps find the ashes of lost veterans left in funeral homes unclaimed by family and friends.

Once the remains have been identified and confirmed to be veterans, they are interred with military honors.

According to Colvin, funeral homes are not legally obligated to store the remains of unclaimed ashes, but many go “above and beyond” by storing hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of ashes.

Colvin estimates that there are probably 4,000 sets of unclaimed remains in the Indianapolis area, and approximates that 20 percent of them

Voters in Zionsville and Perry Township approved the reorganization in November 2014, but Whitestown filed a lawsuit claiming the merger wasn’t valid because the two entities didn’t touch. The Boone County Superior Court sided with Whitestown, but the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled in Zionsville’s favor in June.

are most likely veterans.

“I just wish we could do something for all of them,” Colvin said.

In the past three years he has been present as the remains for 15 unclaimed veterans have received burial honors, including three Civil War soldiers. During his last mission in June, they buried 10 soldiers at the Marion National Cemetery.

Colvin tracked down the first five veterans, then met David Ring and Sarah Thompson with Indiana Funeral Care, which works closely with VA hospitals and veterans. Ring and Thompson had nine unclaimed veterans at their facility who received military honors in June along with a member of the Coast Guard who had passed away in a shelter earlier this year.

Colvin was recently recognized by the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce with a community service award. His wife, Dianna, has helped him raise funds for the American Legion and with the MIA Project.

“I don’t do this for the recognition,” said Colvin, “but I like to get the word out.”

VIP carnival kicks off Fall Festival

The annual Lion’s Club Fall Festival will kick off soon, but not before a special group of people has a chance to expelions club rience it as VIPs on Sept. 11.

“The VIP carnival is for kids of all ages with special needs who are our ‘Very Important People’ guests in Lions Park,” said Leigh Ann Akard, who organized the VIP night. “The goal of this event is to provide special needs families a friendly environment where kids can be kids’ and enjoy the American tradition of carnivals.”

Akard said the carnival is a stress-free event without the emotional and physical drain on parents and caregivers who might “worry if their loved one will fit in or if they can physically cope

in a chaotic environment.

“It is totally free so that no additional financial burden is placed on the family whose goal should be simply to enjoy a family night out,” she said. “Participants will leave Lions Park with a feeling of having fun, but more importantly, feeling like they belonged.”

The evening includes not only fun and smiles, but plenty of rides. In addition to dinner for the guest and their immediate family or caregivers, attendees receive two wristbands for unlimited free access to all rides in the carnival, train rides and games.

Other favorites of the event, Akard said, include entertainment in the gazebo, barrel train rides and bounce houses. There is also an opportunity to visit with mascots, police officers and firefighters in the park.

“We also have groups and other not-forprofits there to talk about the resources that are out there for those with special needs,” she said. “Sometimes when you get a diagnosis, you get so focused on finding places with information on that one special need, so this a way to find resources all in one place.”

Akard said she’s received many messages from past attendees about how much the night means to their families.

“I received an email from one gal I had been messaging with and she said she had thought her family had a conflict for that night so she made everyone change their plans to do this,” she said. “This means so much to them and it is our privilege to put this together for them to come and be our guest.”

New Lions district governor first from Zionsville

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com It took 85 years, but the Zionsville Lions Club can finally boast one of its own as the Lions District Governor. achievement Richard McKellar is the first Zionsville Lion to hold the position in the club’s history.

“I’ll tell you, I wish I’d started 40 years ago,” McKellar said. “It’s one of the best service organizations in the world.”

As district governor, McKellar is asked to visit each of the 56 clubs in his area — one of seven in Indiana — over the next year to inform and assess. He also is expected to participate in four council meetings, a mid-winter conference and host a district convention.

“Besides that,” he said, “the clubs like to see you show up for their fish fries, their pancake breakfasts.”

This year McKellar hopes to ensure that all of the clubs in his district are incorporated to alleviate any legal issues. He also would like to start four new clubs this year, including inWilliamsport, Danville and Logansport.

“We have two counties in the district with no Lions Club,” he said.

“My wife has been working very hard to get clubs to work together and get to know each other better and do community projects,” he said.

During his 10 years as a Lion in Zionsville, McKellar has consistently participated in every event. Once his leadership tenure is over, he said he would like to do all he can “to promote Lionism.”

“The Zionsville club has been extremely supportive of me as (district governor),” he said.

A district governor banner that had been lost for several years was recently replaced by the Zionsville club. While it will belong to future district governors, it was donated in honor of McKellar.

“They contribute to all of the projects and foundations,” McKellar said. “They just do everything right.”

Starkey Park will experience a number of trail closures during September and October due in part to construction designed to restore habitable land for wildlife parks and deter sediment erosion.

Beginning Sept. 8, the easternmost loop of trail SP-5 is scheduled to close at its meeting point with trail SP-2 and SP-6. Trail EC-1 is scheduled to close at its meeting point with trail SP-3 and SP-6.

Eagle Creek, which runs through Starkey Park, provides drinking water to a large portion of the population in Zionsville and Indianapolis.

The sediment erosion threatening drinking water purity and wildlife, which began as a result of large amounts of flooding, affects trails EC-1 and SP-5 at their meeting point. Park officials state the reconstruction will save the ongoing loss of trail EC-1.

Zionsville received a $100,000 grant from the state’s Rivers and Lakes Enhancement Program to offset project costs.

“It’s a fairly standard process using bioengineering techniques to stabilize the bank,” Parks Director Matt Dickey said. “The trail closures were picked at a point where you have an alternate route. It’s just like a road detour.”

Several parts of trails in Starkey Park will be closed beginning Sept. 8 for construction.

Dickey also emphasized the importance of maintenance on the trails and surrounding creek landscapes.

“This section of stream-side trail has had to be moved at least five times, which includes significant moving of trees,” Dickey said. “The Department of Natural Resources helped us fund a study showing that several dump trucks worth of sediment were going downstream each year.”

Comical act: The legend of Miss Mizzou lives on Commentary by Ward Degler In 1949, comic strip artist Milton Caniff was a guest speaker at the University of Missouri‘s Journalism Week celebraplain talk tion. The observance was then and continues today as a week-long party celebrating excellence in journalism.

Each year, famous writers, editors, publishers and broadcasters assemble on the Mizzou campus in Columbia, Mo., with the mission of informing and inspiring classroom apprentices in the lofty craft of good reporting and writing.

Caniff was already a celebrity with his comic strips, “Terry and the Pirates” and “Steve Canyon,” both of which set a standard of accuracy never before achieved in the medium.

Caniff habitually spent hours researching the smallest details about weapons and locations for his wartime stories before ever putting pen and ink to paper.

His status was further enhanced when his research sparked a Congressional investigation into pictures in his comic strip of a new Air Force fighter jet that was classified Top Secret. When asked how he got the photos, he reportedly shrugged and replied, “I wrote to the Air Force and asked for them.”

All of this might have withered to little more than a historical footnote if Caniff had not turned around after his visit and created a character named Miss Mizzou as a cohort of Steve Canyon.

Miss Mizzou showed up out of nowhere, wearing a trench coat and, reportedly, noth-

ing else. Little was ever disclosed of her past except that she had some vague connection to the university.

That was enough for members of the journalism fraternity Sigma Delta Chi. They immediately adopted Miss Mizzou as their own and promoted her as a resident of the university.

In October, 1952, during the halftime celebration at the Missouri homecoming game against Southern Methodist, a New York chorus girl by the name of Bek Stiner paraded to midfield as Miss Mizzou and slipped off her trench coat to reveal a skin-tight, tiger-striped swimsuit.

Two years later, the fraternity launched a Miss Mizzou contest and published the first Miss Mizzou calendar. Miss Mizzou ignited both campus and the town of Columbia like wildfire.

Every year, girls by the dozens donned trench

coats and paraded before the judges.

The contest continued each year until 1971, when the world and the journalism school shifted focus to a serious war in Southeast Asia and a growing unrest throughout the world. Campus activity became less lighthearted and Miss Mizzou faded into obscurity.

Still, when homecoming draws nigh in Columbia, it’s not unusual to catch a glimpse or two at the book store or student union of a girl with cropped blond hair wearing a trench coat.

Why, it’s the definitive list of the Snobbiest Cities in Indiana. Way to go, Zionsville! It beat Carmel as the top-rated municipality. Carmel actually was No. 2. The website’s goal is to “show you the real side of places that not everyone wants to hear.”

Terrific. The rankings were based on factors that include median home prices, median household income and art galleries per capita for municipalities with more than 5,000 people. A related site, HomeSnacks, recently ranked Zionsville as Indiana’s Best Place to Live. Who are we today, Sybil?

Plumbing disaster Commentary by Danielle Wilson We recently experienced a plumbing catastrophe here at Chez Wilson.

We’ve had “issues” with our main-floor toilet for some time. In fact, just last spring I had to take a day off work after my husband had a virtual geyser of filth erupt in his face an hour before a big meeting. The plumber declared that a major blockage in the sewer line was the culprit, but it had cleared of its own accord and all was well.

Flash forward to this Sunday morning.

When I left the house for a bike ride, Doo was just settling down to a cup of coffee, some local news and plans for a productive day. When I arrived back two hours later, the poo had hit the fan. Literally.

Due to yet another blockage, raw sewage had overflowed out of the bathroom and into the back hallway and our oldest son’s newly-carpeted room. It had also seeped down into the air vents, where it

proceeded to drip out of the light fixtures into our finished basement, right onto an heirloom pool table. Doo had managed the worst of it – the house smelled of Clorox rather than eau de Port-O-let and there were only a few “chunks” left on the floorboards – but was in such a state that all I could do was laugh. Finally! A major household calamity on his watch!

For once, he’d had to find every towel in the house to sop up the sludge. He’d had to race downstairs with garbage cans and garage-only buckets to collect the leaks.

And he’d had to phone the plumber and give up his morning to wait out the fourhour service call window. It was wonderful!

Left without alternative, human beings can be tremendously resourceful. When the Soviet empire, touted as a marvel of socialist perfection and central planning, collapsed – people managed. Certainly, it was frightening. Actually, frightening is an understatement. There was some crime, but there had always been criminals. This time, international media was allowed to broadcast the activity globally. There were some very tough outcomes. The weak, infirm and elderly were forced to rely even more upon the kindness of friends and relatives. To some, caring for those folks is an important moral obligation to give – and to others, it is an excessive expectation to be burdened with the need of someone else. But, millions did not starve. Millions did not die of disease. Millions figured out how to survive and, in some cases, thrive in a new economic order.

Without the massive government redistribution they had relied upon for generations, many picked up the pieces and improved their lives by gigantic leaps. For example, business interests in the Ukraine felt the pressure of increasing wages, surging access to capital goods and the inflation that can accompany an expanding economy. Those willing and able to adapt took advantage of the newly released opportunity. Those unable to function outside of the government-imposed cocoon had to find other means. Families learned to care for their own. Thousands of children escaped warehouse orphanages into the loving embrace of parents around the world.

Sure, not every single person was a winner, and some took too great of advantage.

Yet, the same was said about the previous system. Only now, we could openly find out about it. The Soviets discovered that the drag coefficient of big government is, well, a big drag. As Putin pushes back toward the Soviet era, we wonder who will win now.

That’s just tongue depressing Commentary by Dick Wolfsie “Prevention” magazine claims that by exercising certain muscles in your tongue, you can reduce snoring and prevent humor your spouse from elbowing you.

I don’t think Mary Ellen’s elbow can reach from her side of a king-size bed all the way to the living room couch.

According to the study, “These exercises are a promising noninvasive treatment for large populations suffering from snoring.” I have always wondered who the top snoring nations of the world were. That’s the kind of chart USA Today needs on its front page.

For example: Open your mouth 30 times like you’re saying, “Ahh” for your doctor. If you say, “Awww” like you are watching a YouTube cat video, that apparently won’t work.

Open your mouth wide and then use your hands to gently massage your lower jaw while counting to 20. But in order to count to 20, I either need both hands free or be able to talk out loud.

Try saying each vowel of the alphabet repeatedly. So you’d go, “A-E-I-O-U” about 30 times. Oh, and sometimes you can include Y. When doing these exercises, always opt

for in the privacy of your home. Doing them while using public transportation can lead to extended time in the slammer.

Check out the anti-snoring chin straps. The inventor claims they “easily stretch over your head, holding everything in place and preventing it from falling off.” Maybe it’s the English teacher in me, but I think that means you could be at risk of losing your head.

This device is so comfortable that “it can be worn throughout the night.” Wait, what’s the alternative? “Honey, the snoring strap has been very effective the last two hours. I’m waking you up now so you can take it off.”

“OK, thanks. I’m going back to sleep now.”

(10 minutes later) “Sorry, dear. You’re at it again. Saddle up. I’ll wake you again when it’s working.”

Bonnett returns to stage at Civic Theatre

Carmel native has lead role in Little Women, The Broadway Musical

By Sam Elliott • news@currentinwestfield.com Carmel’s Julia Bonnett is making a return to musical theater playing the lead role in one of her favorite shows as she’ll portray Jo March in the Civic Theatre’s performance upcoming production of “Little Women, The Broadway Musical.”

The show opens Friday, Sept. 11, and runs through Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Tarkington.

The chance to play a character special to her in one of her favorite shows was enough to make Bonnett break what had become a two-year hiatus from performing arts.

“This is the first show I’ve done in two years. I haven’t done a show in a long time,” the 2009 Carmel High School grad said.

“I lived in New York for a year and didn’t perform out there. I worked for NBC in their video archives, which was really cool, but my lifestyle didn’t really lend to any performing. When she heard the Civic Theatre decided on “Little Women, The Broadway Musical”, Bonnett decided she was plenty settled. “’Little Women (The Broadway Musical)’ is one of my favorite shows because the music is so beautiful. I don’t think it’s a show that a lot of people know outside of the musical theater community, but the music is gorgeous,” Bonnett said. “It’s some of my favorite music, so when I heard the Civic was doing it I just had to audition.”

She landed the lead role, one originated by Tony winner Sutton Foster — Bonnett’s idol in the profession who also originated another role special to Bonnett.

“Actually, the opening show here at the Tarkinton for Civic was ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ and I played Janet Van De Graaf — Sutton Foster originated that role of Janet and she also originated the role of Jo in ‘Little Women (The Broadway Musical)’, which is kind of cool,” Bonnett said. “She’s really what made this show so successful, just because she’s amazing. I’m a big fangirl of Sutton Foster.”

In portraying Jo March, Bonnett plays an aspiring Civil Warera writer with three sisters. It’s a character somewhat biographical of the 1869 classic’s author, Louisa May Alcott.

“It’s the type of character that is so different and is so against the norm of that time. Her sisters are getting married, trying to be in society and Jo is not interested in any of that,” Bonnett said. “All she wants is to write her stories, become a famous writer and stay with her sisters forever. The story is essentially about growing up and realizing that your dreams don’t necessarily come true, but it’s the path that matters.

“For me personally, this character is an important figure because she’s a feminist and she’s a great example for girls of any age who are different than what’s expected,” she added. “I love the character. I think she’s fantastic.”

Commentary by Ceci Martinez You don’t need to order Chinese food for dinner tonight! Enjoy this asparagus fried rice dish at home. This is a perfect dish for those lazy nights.

Yep, your gut will benefit from those good bacteria, too!

Note: Asparagus can be tough. Cut off the ends to 1 to 2 in. from the bottom. Using a vegetable peeler, peel just below the tip.

ASPARAGUS FRIED RICE Serves: 4 to 6 / Cook: 20 minutes Ingredients: 3 cups cold cooked long grain white rice, 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon chopped ginger, 1 teaspoon chopped garlic, 3 slices bacon, chopped, 7 oz. asparagus, cut into 1-in. pieces diagonally, 1 cup medium, cooked shrimp (peeled and deveined, tail off), 2 large eggs, beaten, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon pepper, 2 tablespoon toasted sesame oil, 7 green onions, finely sliced, soy sauce (use low sodium) Directions: Use leftover cold cooked rice.

Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan (non-stick) over medium-high heat. Add ginger, garlic, bacon, asparagus and

shrimp and cook, stirring constantly for 2 minutes. Add cooked rice, stirring often, until rice is dry and fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Push rice to outside of wok to create a well in the center. Add remaining 2 teaspoons vegetable oil. Pour eggs into well and cook, stirring occasionally, until large curds form and eggs are fully cooked. Add salt, pepper, sesame oil, green onions and soy sauce, toss rice until all ingredients are well combined.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Clean mushrooms with a damp paper towel. Carefully break off stems. Chop stems extremely fine, discarding tough end of stems. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and chopped mushroom stems to the skillet. Fry until any moisture has disappeared, taking care not to burn garlic. Set aside to cool. When garlic and mushroom mixture is no longer hot, stir in cream cheese, parmesan cheese, black pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Mixture should be very thick.

Using a little spoon, fill each mushroom cap with a generous amount of stuffing. Arrange the mushroom caps on prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the mushrooms are piping hot and liquid starts to form under caps.

Kara R., Westfield, Ind. A: Kara, great question. Your optometrist is 100 percent correct. You should never swim or shower in your soft contact lenses. Soft contact lenses are a very porous material. Think of them as very tiny sponges. They soak up everything they come in contact with.

3 restaurants to open at Anson

By Heather Lusk • news@currentinzionsville.com By the end of the year, Zionsville and Whitestown area residents will have three new and very different restaurants new biz to enjoy. Gandolfo’s Deli, Pie Five Pizza and Buffalo Wild Wings are all scheduled to open in Anson in the coming months.

First introduced in the Dallas area in 2011, Pie Five Pizza is opening its second Indiana location in front of the Meijer at Anson. Its restaurant in downtown Indianapolis opened July 24, joining nearly 60 other locations throughout the country.

“It’s five minutes from the start of the line to the end of the line,” said Christopher Dissette, vice president of operations for Pie Five, citing “state of the art oven technology” that cooks the pizza so quickly.

“It’s going to be quick service and great service,” he said.

Anson’s Pie Five franchise will have the company’s first drive-thru, which is expected to become available about six months after the grand opening.

Pie Five creates a specialty pie in every state in which they have franchise locations.

With a grand opening set for Sept. 21, Gandolfo’s Deli will be in front of the Anson Meijer.

Franchise owner Didak Patel decided to open Gandolfo’s Deli after a friend suggested he try the food, which he felt was better than other franchise delis.

“I tried it myself,” he said. “I really loved it.”

This new prototype of the franchise will include new bread options and different salads.

Both Gandolfo’s Deli and Pie Five Pizza are currently hiring.

Construction is underway on the old DC Pub location in the Marketplace at Anson. According to workers on site, it should be ready to open as a Buffalo Wild Wings in roughly three months.

The immediate feedback is as we hoped. The joyful homeowners are commenting how it has dramatically changed how they live. If it’s nice outside, they are outside appreciating all that life has to offer. Sitting at the table, in the hot tub, or nestled in a private lounging area, the options are ambitious. Materials We employed a diverse set of materials to pull the project together. Premium pressure treated pine was selected for the decking.

Today’s premium pine is NOT the tired material that has been used for decades. Its thicker girth commands a beefier feel under foot. It has a low propensity for splintering or warping and there are minimal knots.

Are Your Kids Getting What They Need in School?

As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher.

You know your child best, and your input should be considered by the school at every opportunity. Parents frequently do not know what their children's rights are in terms of the education and services offered by the schools, and they often can feel intimidated by school staffs. Your child has the right to a free appropriate public education under federal law.

If you suspect that your child may have a disability, let your child’s school know. Parents have the right to be involved with every decision regarding their child’s education, including whether your child may need special education services. If your child is struggling behaviorally or academically, his school may be required to do an evaluation to see if he qualifies for special services. Trust your instincts: you know your child best. The worst thing to do is nothing.

If you wait to seek help for your child, his frustration and sense of failure could continue to break down his self-esteem, while the window of time for meaningful intervention narrows.

Each child qualifying for services are required by federal law to receive an Individualized Education Program, or IEP. IEPs are put together by a team of school staff and schools are required by law to include parents in this process. However, parents often feel as though they have little input to their child’s IEP because they are unaware of what their child’s rights are. This can have a serious impact and their child's progress can be impaired by a lack of knowledge. "What we have is what you get" is not what the federal and state laws provide. Schools receiving federal funding are required, by law, to devise an IEP for each child qualified for services based on that child's individual needs (not on the school's staffing or budget problems) that is reasonably calculated to confer a

meaningful educational benefit.

Anything less than that does not comply with the federal law, and is actionable through a due process proceeding.

Examples of how schools commit violations: • Failure to find a child eligible for services despite evidence that the child was struggling academically or behaviorally.

• Failure to develop an appropriate IEP based on the child's individual needs.

• Failure to implement the IEP as written.

• Failure to involve parents to meaningfully participate in the IEP development process.

• Failure to prevent punishment of the child for actions or inactions that are manifestations of the child's disability (caused by the child's disability).

• Failure to train staff and aides in the child's areas of disability.

• Predetermining placement and services before the case conference committee meeting.

• Failure to conduct necessary evaluations of the child.

• Failure to provide education and services in the least restrictive environment.

• Failure to offer extended school year services to the child.

• Failure to allow a child with special needs to participate in extracurricular activities to the same extent as his non-disabled peers.

Get the most out of your kitchen island Commentary by David Decker The modern kitchen fulfills many different roles. It’s a family gathering place, a house party hotspot, a homeindoor living work help center, a storage headquarters and a five-star restaurant. For many homeowners, the functionality of a kitchen begins with a well-designed island.

Islands are ideal for a variety of kitchen tasks, including cooking, baking, cleanup, storage, informal dining, entertaining party guests and more.

First, you’ll want to decide what you are going to use the island for most frequently and use those functions to devise your design and storage plan. For example, if you would like to use the island as a food prep station, include outlets for small appliances, a prep sink and storage for cooking utensils such as cutting boards, knives and mixing bowls.

If you are using the island as a dining area, make sure the countertop height is designed to fit standard chairs or stools. The island should be crafted to fit your utilitarian needs.

Finnish saunas: The naked truth Commentary by Don Knebel

For residents of Finland, the sauna is the perfect place for many of life’s most important activities — from baking and travel bathing to building businesses and birthing babies. A Finnish proverb says, “First build the sauna; then the house.” As a result, Finland — with a population of about 5 million, — erects half of all the world’s saunas and has more saunas than automobiles. But for foreigners, Finnish sauna traditions can be a little unnerving.

The earliest Finnish saunas, developed hundreds of years ago, were constructed without chimneys, allowing smoke to fill the building as the burning wood heated the stones on which water is then poured. Many Finns still prefer these so-called “smoke saunas,” particularly for special occasions. Participants emerging from a smoke sauna may be covered from head to toe with greasy soot, which many believe has therapeutic properties. Finnish sauna users traditionally swat themselves with leafy young birch twigs, a practice they believe increases blood circulation and makes

Even in winter, participants often jump into the nearest lake or pond after sweating in the hot sauna and then return for more.

Like Americans asking people to join them for lunch, Finns often ask friends and business associates to join them in the sauna.

Finns usually sit in the nude on their hard sauna benches and consider requests to wear a bathing suit at least a faux pas and perhaps an insult. Finnish men and women sometimes sauna together, as do families. They insist that the experience is never sexual because their saunas are sacred places, where swearing and even arguing are taboo.

“Sauna,” which Finns pronounce “SOW nuh,” is the only Finnish word to enter the world’s vocabulary. If you are invited to a Finnish sauna, say the word correctly and leave your modesty behind.

Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: “Dear Grammar Guy. Over the past few years I have increasingly heard the word ‘that’ used grammar guy in place of the word ‘who.’ Example: ‘The people that work for us.’ I even hear this on national radio programs. What do you think of that?” – (Anne Eisinger) Answer: Thanks for the question, Anne. It’s a subject I’ve touched on before, but definitely one worth revisiting.

You are right to cringe when the word “that” is used to refer to a person (or animal … my cat would be the first to tell you she’s no “that”). When talking about a person, use the relative pronoun “who” or the object pronoun “whom,” if appropriate.

The word “that” gets a lot of hate in writerly circles because it tends to be unnecessary.

Consider what, if anything, is lost between, “He said that it would be all right,” and, “He said it would be all right.”

That being said (see what I did there?),

there are occasions when “that” is both appropriate and necessary. For your convenience, here are three simple rules to help clear things up: Use “who” when talking about people.

Use “that” when talking about objects or groups and introducing an essential clause.

Use “which” when talking about objects or groups and introducing a non-essential clause.

Fall Festival tradition still going strong

The Zionsville Fall Festival has been on the upswing for the past three years.

Tim Reinhart, Fall Festival chairman, said the Zionsville Lions Club-sponsored weekend as strong in the last three years as any period in the past decade.

“We estimate between 20,000 to 25,000 attend the parade or come into the park at some point over the weekend,” Reinhart said. “Because we don’t charge, we don’t have an exact count.

The one way we do chart it is through the revenue from food sales and the carnival. The carnival has grown the last three years. We’ve broken records at the carnival each of the last three years, whether it was a single-day record or a record for the entire weekend.”

This year’s theme is the Wild, Wild West and will be reflected in the parade floats and costumes. The three-day Fall Festival will be held Sept. 11, 12 and 13 at Lions Park. This is the 62nd year the Lions Club has hosted the festival.

It begins Sept. 11 with the VIP carnival for those with special needs and their families from 5 to 8 p.m. The carnival is open to all from 6 to 11 p.m. that day.

Reinhart said they have made improvements in center areas.

“One of the popular areas has been the Pet Pavilion area the last several years,” Reinhart said. “We’ve created a new exposition that will have pet vendors, pet acts like Silly Safari and Animalia will come and bring some of their animals over the weekend.”

There will be a Safety Zone with representatives from Zionsville Fire Department, Zionsville Police Department and Boone County Sheriff’s Department. Guests can learn about CPR, car seat safety and police dogs.

“Those are all going to be located north of the gazebo so it’s in a high-profile part in the middle of the park,” Reinhart said. “It was very popular last year, so we’re adjusting space to accommodate those crowds.”

The parade begins at 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 12 with more than 100 parade entries.

Another attraction is the Lions Lounge for those 21 and older, which opens at 5 p.m. on Sept. 12 with a cover charge of $5. The Impalas will perform from 7 to 11 p.m.

The Lions Club, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year, has 140 members. The biggest money maker is the silent auction from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 12. The auction has already begun online at qtego.net/qlink/zlc.php.

Parade always a fun event

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Three dance teams, two equestrian groups, gymnasts and plenty of Boy and Girl Scouts will be among the youngsters marching in this year’s Fall Festival parade. They’ll be joined by a wide variety of vehicles including Corvettes, Teslas, hot rod golf carts and miniature Model Ts along with the ever-present fire trucks and police vehicles.

With a Wild, Wild West Theme, more than 100 entries are expected to travel through town Sept. 12. The parade is the kickoff for the 62nd annual Fall Festival weekend of events that is the Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

“It’s always been a fun event,” said George Tikijian, who has coordinated the parade since 1997.

And if the weather is less than favorable?

“We don’t talk about rain,” said Tikijian.

“Sometimes at the lineup it’s cold.”

The parade starts at Zionsville Community High School at 10:15 a.m. and heads south down Mulberry Street. At Ash Street, the parade turns to the west then south down Main Street. Tikijian estimates that it usually reaches downtown by 11 a.m.

before Leigh Ann Akard and Ray Cortopasi announce the parade entries as they pass. This is Akard’s second year as an announcer while Cortopassi estimates he’s served 10 years.

“It’s come to be something I really treasure, because it’s one of those long-held family traditions in Zionsville that brings everyone together,” said Cortopassi, a news anchor at Fox 59. “It brings people not only from our community but all around central Indiana.”

Cortopassi said he feels honored to be a part of the festivities.

“I keep thinking, ‘This is the year they’re going to want to shake things up and have someone else be the emcee,’ but, God bless them, they keep having me back,” he said. “I’ll keep coming back until they finally get sick of me and my jokes!”

Artists come from near and far

By Maddie Yerant • news@currentzionsville.com Fall Festival-goers will be able to check out the creativity of local and regional vendors at the Arts & Crafts area.

Stationed west of food alley, the Arts & Crafts area will feature several different vendors selling a range of items including handmade jewelry, knitted items, furniture and more, according to Fall Festival chair Tim Reinhart. It will be open from noon to 6 p.m.

Sept. 12 and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 13.

“It’s designed toward vendors that are manufacturing arts and crafts – not only commercial arts services,” Reinhart said. “It’s more tailored to groups where these people make jewelry or knitted scarves or items more like that.”

According to Reinhart, jewelry in particular is a hit with people attending the festival.

“The jewelry is very popular,” Reinhart said.

“We usually have two or three different types of jewelry groups coming.”

According to Reinhart, this year’s selection includes pieces made from fruit and seeds.

Another expected bestseller, he said, is handcarved furniture.

“I know there’s an outdoor furniture place that should be coming this year, so usually there are some very unique items,” Reinhart said.

Some of these items may even be fit for the festival’s youngest attendees.

“I know there’s handmade baby items,” Reinhart said. “Baby clothes are usually popular as well for people who attend the fair.”

According to Reinhart, most of the vendors come from the Zionsville area, but some make a much longer trip to the festival.

“There’re vendors coming from as far as Chicago, so maybe there’s some vendor that we haven’t seen in Boone County, or new ideas or products,” Reinhart said. “So that’s exciting.”

Reinhart said he hopes the location and vendors encourage as good an audience as the area saw last year.

“There was a very good turnout last year in the arts and crafts area,” Reinhart said.

“The vendors appreciated the location and it seemed like the quality of the products was appreciated by the customers as well, so I’m looking forward to a great year.”

Lounge a relaxing stop for adults

With a parade, carnival and other kid-friendly events, the Zionsville Fall Festival is known as a great place for children to have fun.

But what about the parents?

The Lions Lounge – for those 21 and older – will offer beer, wine and live entertainment from 5 to 11 p.m. Sept. 12.

“Many years ago we came up with this idea, because we had this tent set up to be open for Saturday nights and we didn’t have a lot of activities for adults,” said Tim Reinhart, Fall Festival chair.

Sun King Brewery and Hopwood Winery will provide some of the beverages that will be available for purchase. This year’s fall fest theme is Wild, Wild West, so attendees are encouraged to dress in country attire.

The Impalas will perform live music in a variety of genres, including country. The band will begin its set at 7 p.m.

Light appetizers will be available, as well as adult-friendly games like corn hole.

“Mainly it’s just a nice relaxing thing to sit outside the tent and socialize with the rest of the community,” Reinhart said.

A teen-friendly night will be held at the gazebo during those same hours to provide a safe, drug- and alcohol-free party for minors.

To enter the beer tent, there is a $5 cover charge that includes the first pint of beer or glass of wine. Twenty-ounce cowboy boot mugs with the fall fest logo will be for sale for $10, which includes first pour of beer. Each additional pour costs $5 but provides four additional ounces for free.

“We had a big attendance last year,” Reinhart said. “A lot of Lions workers go, it’s kind of nice to relax for a while.”

Village Kitchen joins Fall Festival food lineup

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Village Kitchen will join a group of veteran vendors offering a wide variety of food at this year’s Fall Festival.

Bryan Avery, owner of Village Kitchen, was especially drawn to the event because of the VIP Carnival on Friday evening for guests with special needs.

“That was enough to get me behind the program,” he said. Village Kitchen will also contribute to the VIP dinner for these guests.

Avery said his first experience with Zionsville was Fall Festival weekend.

“It’s a great cause, and I’ve started to do some work with the Lions myself,” he said.

Village Kitchen will offer a mini version of its homemade meatball sandwich so that visitors can easily walk with it and “can enjoy something that’s made from scratch,” Avery said.

“We will also be serving brats, which I think

will be good in the fall,” he added. Brats will be served with homemade sauerkraut on freshly baked rolls.

The Scoop will make its second appearance at Fall Festival after selling ice cream at the Lions Club July 4 celebration for the past two years.

Food truck Nacho Mama, a frequent vendor at Zionsville events including most recently the Street Dance, will have soft tacos, rice bowls and many varieties of nachos.

The Lions Club will sell hot dogs, hamburgers, corn dogs and tenderloin sandwiches.

“I’m hoping that everybody has a great time, that everyone finds something they like,” said Steve Gayheart, the Lions Club member who organized the food vendors.

Additional vendors include Greek’s Pizzeria, Norvell BBQ, Chick-fil-A and longtime supporter Georgia’s Kitchen with brats and hot dogs.

Lions Club Park will be buzzing with activity during this year’s Fall Festival, and attendees don’t have to miss out on any of the excitement during the annual silent auction.

Silent auction organizer Jennifer Blandford said a website will be available for participants to bid online before the event. When they arrive at the park to bid on the day of the auction, they can roam around the park and will be notified via text message if they have been outbid. They can up their bid through their phone, as well.

Set for 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 12, the auction has something for everyone, including trips, collectables, household items, gift certificates and more.

“The silent auction is one of our larger fundraisers as part of fall festival,” Blandford said.

“It’s always for products in the park. We’ve earmarked out funds in the auction this year to go to a new park speaker and sound system so all of our events can be heard through the park.”

The sound system costs could be up to around $20,000. Last year, the silent auction brought in $26,000.

If more than the required amount for the sound system is raised, the funds will go to playground equipment replacement, a new gazebo roof, maintenance and flood recovery.

Blandford said she will take donation items for the auction up until Sept. 11.

“Businesses and individuals should consider donating because we feel like Lions Park adds to our community and to the success of Zionsville,” Blandford said. “With our park at the heart (of Zionsville), the events that we host contribute to the quality of life here. It’s a great way for businesses to say thank you.”

Car sho w rolls in Sept. 13

Doug Gauthier has been a long-time car enthusiast.

“My father had three old vehicles he restored,” Gauthier said. “I was doing it with him when I was in high school. I really like the old restored vehicles. They are simple to work on. They Gauthier look beautiful and they turn heads when you drive them down the road. I don’t have room in the garage right now for a restored car, but as soon as I get some of the kids out of the house I plan to have a restored car, a nice muscle car.”

Meanwhile, the Zionsville resident gets his car fix by serving as the chairman for the Zionsville Fall Festival’s 13th annual American Dream Car Show. This is the second consecutive year he has been chairman. The car show is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 in the grassy area around the gazebo at Lions Park.

Last year there were 98 cars.

“We had to turn a few vehicles away because we ran out of space,” Gauthier said. “We plan to have more space this year to accommodate more vehicles if they come.”

Gauthier said it’s hard to gauge the number of cars before the event because most register that day.

“We usually only get 10 pre-registered vehicles,” Gauthier said. “If it’s raining that day people won’t really show up, because they don’t want to get their cars wet. We’re hoping for a beautiful day like last year.”

Last year, a 1949 red Lincoln Continental won Best of Show and a 1967 blue Pontiac GTO captured the People’s Choice Award. Anyone attending the show can vote for People’s Choice.

Three judges determine the Best of Show.

“Muscle cars are probably the most popular entry,” Gauthier said. “Everyone likes to see those.”

Pre-registration closed Aug. 31. Registration runs from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 13 and costs $20. The trophy ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m.

Leo Paloo za a safe night for teens

The Zionsville Lion’s Club annual Fall Festival attracts people of all ages with its carnival, Lions Lounge and other activities, but the gazebo at Lions Park is specifically reserved for teens from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 12.

The Leo Palooza will provide a drug- and alcohol-free safe party for teens with a DJ and a light and sound show.

The teen night event is named after the Alpha Leo Club, a group of 12-18 year olds that participates in service projects and often partners with the Lions Club. Many Alpha Leo Club members will be at the festival doing volunteer work.

“We try to put some fun things out for the kids. There’s going to be a wanted poster that people can put their faces in and take pictures of,” said Michelle Shepherd, Alpha Leo Club lead advisor.

The carnival will be open during that time as well and is close by, and many kids go back and forth between the two events.

The Alpha Leo Club will use this time as a type of recruitment, said Tim Reinhart, Fall Festival chair.

“It’s another avenue of entertainment,” Reinhart said. “There’s security, so it’s a safe area. It should be fun and a little different than our Sunday night concert lineup, and (the kids) basically get to know the Leo Club and understand the things they do for the community and the Lions Club.”

Leo Palooza is sponsored by the town of Zionsville and the Zionsville Police Department.

According to Reinhart and Shepherd, the area will be monitored to keep all the kids safe.

There is no fee for Leo Palooza.

“It’s a good way for (the kids) to get involved and maybe do some community service,” Reinhart said.

Hands on fun at Kids Corner ¯

The Kids Corner at the Fall Festival will once again be filled with a variety of resources for parents and hands-on activities for everyone.

“It’s designed to be a fun place for families to go and have fun with their kids,” said Lee Ann Balta, who organized the Kids Corner vendors.

There are 10 vendors this year that include Boone County Advocacy Center, Mad Science, Joyful Noise, Usborne Books and more. There will also be face painting, a balloon artist and a booth where kids can make bead bracelets.

“It increases (kids’) creativity and it exposes them to a variety of creative venues like music and art and science,” Balta said. “Parents

can take this opportunity and watch their child’s interests and then further develop those interests at home.”

Balta has received positive feedback on the Kids Corner at past festivals. “(Children) are always excited to come and try what we have to share with them and take it home,” she said. “The Kids Corner booths are designed for them to be able to touch things and explore things.”

Balta said she’s always looking for new and engaging vendors to promote their services to the community.

“Maybe if someone hadn’t thought it would be a venue for them, they might want to consider coming and sharing their talents with the community,” she said.

Fall Festival goes to the dogs at Pet Pavilion

This year’s Pet Pavilion is sure to fetch a good crowd, whether they walk on two legs or four.

Located next to the Safety Zone the Pet Pavilion will feature not only pet-themed vendors and services, but performances, demos and more, according to Pet Pavilion coordinator Mike Heffner.

“We have pet supply stores, daycare and boarding, rescues, vendors, service companies, a pet craft booth and not-for-profit,” Heffner said. “(Festivalgoers) should also expect to be entertained by the exposition tent, where we’ll have performances by Silly Safari and Animailia on Sunday and some other demos taking place there as well.”

Demos include performances from Midwest Search Dogs and the Zionsville police and fire departments, Heffner said.

Midwest Search Dogs will feature a demo on how its four-legged employees can search for and rescue people in a crisis, while the police and fire departments will show how they integrate their canines into everyday operations.
