Humane society seeks county help

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com The Humane Society for Boone County fulfills the role normally provided by an animal control officer, responding to calls from law enforcepets ment, often in the middle of the night, about injured animals and taking in strays because the county doesn’t have a shelter.

“But we are doing it free of charge to the county and taxpayers,” HSBC President Mike Hancock said. “The need arises in situations like Michelle (Atkinson) Hancock recently encountered where an emergency vet expense will be incurred as a result of law enforcement calling us and requesting our assistance because there is nobody else to call.”

Hancock drafted an open letter to county officials on Facebook Atkinson asking for help. The letter states if an animal control officer or shelter can’t be offered, the county should consider helping fund veterinarian bills for injured strays and other animals that come into the Humane Society’s care.

“I have the utmost respect for Sheriff (Mike) Nielsen. The first time I asked him about establishing an animal control officer, he looked at me and asked, ‘Where will that officer take the animal that gets picked up?’” Hancock said. “He had a point, and I knew that such a position would be dependent on the construction of a physical shelter.”

Land in Whitestown has already been donated to HSBC to build a shelter, and design plans for the new building are complete.

“But the organization wants to raise a lot more money before they build it to make sure they have enough funds to cover operational costs for several

years after it opens,” said Tanya Sumner, Whitestown assistant town manager and HSBC volunteer.

Nielsen said his office and HSBC have partnered as advocates for animals for several years and agrees a shelter is needed.

“There is an enormous need for a Humane Society shelter in Boone County,” Nielsen said. “Law enforcement receives weekly calls from citizens regarding abused, neglected and abandoned animals in our county.”

For Atkinson, director of foster/adoptions, having an animal control officer would mean a faster response time, allowing officers to get back to “their very important job of keeping Boone County safe.”

“An ACO means I’d have help, as the intake person, and could spend more time with my family, updating the website and ensuring my fosters have what they need. Oftentimes a call comes in and I have to drop everything to go out,” Atkinson said.

Boone County Commissioner Mark Applegate said although he sees a need for animal control and appreciates the efforts of HSBC, he doesn’t see funding for an animal control officer or shelter hapApplegate pening in the foreseeable future.

“Maybe at some point in the distant future, but right now our county is growing so fast and there are so many funding needs and so many things we are way behind on – police protection, our jails are bursting at the seams and our roads are falling apart,” Applegate said. “The county is growing so fast and it’s just hard to keep on the needs. At this point I just know it is not a priority.”

The commission couldn’t do anything even if it wanted to, Applegate said, without the county council providing funding and its full support.

County booming in 2016

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Boone County had a solid 2015 in terms of economic development, but it already has marked a much stronger 2016 economy according to the Boone County Economic Development Commission, which held its annual meeting Aug. 30 at Golf Club of Indiana.

Up to 410 new jobs have been brought to the county so far in 2016 from businesses that have chosen to expand or relocate here, investing more than $151.8 million into the local economy. In 2015 roughly 380 new jobs were created with $38.3 million invested locally by six companies, including Festool and DK Pierce.

“We just came off of a very good week,” Molly Whitehead, executive director of the Boone County EDC said, of Daimler Trucks North America and Ken’s Foods recently announcing expansions in the county. “It should hopefully not come as a surprise that 2016 has been a much bigger and better year successfully for Boone EDC and for Boone County as a whole.”

Whitehead acknowledged the microloan and Grow programs in place to help encourage the success of small businesses, which comprise 90 percent of the county’s economy.

Keynote speaker Gerry Dick, creator and host of Inside INdiana Business, said the county’s unemployment rate is 4.5 percent and cited distribution, technology and life sciences as areas of growth.

He emphasized the importance of everyone involved being engaged in the process and working together, from business owners to town and county officials.

“Everybody participating is engaged in the process,” he said. “I think as we get into regional collaboration that’s going to be one of the keys going forward.”

Library drive to benefit TheraPets

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com For the past nine years the PAWS to Read program at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library has featured dogs reading from TheraPets of Indiana present as children practice reading skills. The nonprofit provides animalassisted therapy and activities in hospitals, schools, assisted living and nursing homes, home settings and libraries.

“Research has shown children whose reading scores lag behind their peers sometimes have a fear of reading out loud in the classroom. Dogs are non-judgmental,” TheraPets Executive Director Darlene Gosnell said. “Reading to a dog helps improve a child’s reading and communication skills. There is no stress and no judgment.”

TheraPets uses Cairn terriers and Westies in its program. Gosnell said the breeds have an inborn affinity for children and their size makes them ideal to “curl up and snuggle.”

Now the library wants to pay back the dogs and the organization and are hosting a donation drive for items for their care.

“In the past year we have lost six dogs due to age and health-related illnesses. With the

large unexpected vet medical bills we were finding that we needed a little extra help to get ahead,” Gosnell said. “By getting donated items we will be able to rebuild our inventory.”

Donations can be made at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at the Puppy Love Storytime for 3-6 year olds and at 4 p.m. at the PAWS Puppy Shower for 7-12 year olds. Donations can also be made at the Youth Services reference desk any time before Sept. 6.

Needed items include paper towels, Purex liquid laundry soap, gift cards from Pet Plus, Petsmart, PetCo and Wal-Mart. TheraPets can also use gas gift cards, bottled water in gallon jugs (the dogs can’t drink tap water), paper bowls, and crate mats (23 1/2 x 18).

Jubilate Choir allows special needs children to shine

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Ever since 13-year-old Brendan Murray was a baby, he’s loved music.

“He is always playing music music and dancing and singing to it,” his mom, Kathy Murray, said. “We noticed at a very young age that when Brendan would sing, he would often sing right on pitch.”

It was also at the young age of 2½ the Zionsville Middle School eighth grader was diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

“He isn’t severe, but he doesn’t have Asperger’s, either. He is very verbal and social,” Kathy said.

The Murrays wanted their son to be involved in extracurricular activities, but sports have always been hard for him. So four years ago when a flyer came home about the Jubilate Choir, it seemed like an ideal solution.

An affiliate of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, Jubilate Choir is for singers with special needs in grades 3 to 9. They meet each week and work not only on choral technique but also on social growth.

“Most of the repertoire is the same as used by other ICC choirs, including multiple parts, which adds to the challenge but also makes it possible for Jubilate to sing with other ICC groups from time to time,” Kathy said.

Each year the Jubilate Choir has a small concert for families of choir members. Last year, the choir participated in two additional concerts – the Indiana Music Educators Conference and the ICC 30th anniversary show.

Since he started singing with the choir, Kathy said the change in Brendan has been noticeable – from increased confidence in speaking in front of others to becoming a leader in the classroom.

“It allows him to feel a part of a group and meet new friends,” Kathy said. “As a parent it has been very rewarding to us to see Brendan excel at something and be so happy doing it.”

Looking back at fire drills Commentary by Ward Degler Fire drills in the United States became a big deal in 1958 after fire burned Our Lady of the Angels school in Chicago. plain talk Children on the second floor of the school died because they couldn’t get to one of the fire exits.

Following that tragedy, fire marshals and legislators set up mandatory fire emergency training in all public buildings. This included holding routine fire drills.

Fire drills, of course, imply there are fire escapes, which is ironic since fire escapes had actually been around since the 1800s. The first one was developed in Grand Island, Neb., as a sort of self-lowering pulley arrangement designed to enable traveling businessmen to rappel to safety from hotel windows.

The most popular fire escape, of course, is the multi-level stair-and-platform outfits attached to the outside of big city apartment buildings. Even when they were a vital part of fire safety, they mostly were used for teenage hand-holding and as a place to sleep during torrid summer nights.

While these fire escapes still exist and probably still provide meeting places for the lovelorn, their safety function has all but vanished due to modern sprinkler systems and advanced firefighting techniques.

We had fire drills when I was in school.

When I was in the third grade, my school had no fire escape, and we were told to simply walk down the stairs in an orderly fashion. I remember wondering what we would do in case the stairs were on fire.

My sixth grade school had a fire escape installed just before school started. It was a curvy enclosed tunnel that started on the third floor and swirled down to the ground.

Our principal elected to show everyone how it worked, so he launched himself into the open-

ing and twisted down to the ground. Unfortunately, the installers had neglected to torque down one of the screws in the tunnel, and when the principal emerged at the bottom, the seat of his pants was completely gone, suspended somewhere between the second and third floor.

During the summer when the school was unoccupied, we enjoyed shimmying up the tunnel and sliding back down, a precursor of sorts to the modern water slide.

Unfortunately, one hot summer afternoon a little girl wormed her way to the summit and slid back down on a pre-heated metal slide.

We heard there were blisters in unmentionable places and a lot of high-octane meetings with the principal and the school board afterward.

Before school started in the fall, a metal gate was installed at the bottom of the fire escape. Some of us wondered what would happen if they neglected to remove the gate before a fire drill.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: an established Secretary of State, with a famous last name, facing off against a political outsider who made his fortune in real estate.

I am, of course, speaking of the 1828 presidential campaigns of John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.

We want to look at the past through sepiatinted glasses. We want to imagine that it was a time where our presidential candidates treated their opponents with respect.

It’s a myth, and the ugliest example may have been in 1828.

The question on the table was who better represented America. Adams, the son of a Founding Father, was cosmopolitan, cutting his teeth as a diplomat in foreign lands.

Jackson, orphaned during childhood, was the heroic general of the battle of New Orleans.

Each had obvious strengths.

Their surrogates tried to contort the opponent’s strengths into weaknesses.

Adams’ international experience was turned to make Adams look disconnected from the

average American. Jackson’s military experience was mocked with Coffin Handbills, fliers that featured coffins on them, one for each American executed under Jackson’s command.

Wives were not off limits. Adams had married an Englishwoman, which was used to illustrate how detached he was from America.

The most vitriol was saved for Jackson’s wife, Rachel. After her abusive first marriage ended, she and Jackson were married. But it was before the divorce was technically finalized. This technicality was aired out before the nation in 1828. Rachel was vilified as an adulteress, a bigamist and worse.

Jackson won the election, but for Rachel the attacks burrowed deep in her soul. She died of a heart attack just before her husband’s inauguration. Everyone blamed the election. Jackson would never forgive Adams or himself.

As they say, in presidential politics, there’s nothing new under the sun.

HAWK Foundation provides opportunities for children with special needs – and their families

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Most parents will never forget the moment a child takes those first steps. For Debbie Weidner, that memory is cover story extra special.

Her daughter Shea, 7 years old at the time, had been confined to a wheelchair because of complications from a rare genetic chromosome disorder. She had just taken a ride on the popular children’s train at the HAWK Foundation’s VIP Carnival at the Zionsville Fall Festival.

“When she got off she stood up and took two steps,” Weidner said.

That was one of many firsts for Shea at a HAWK (Helping All With Kindness) Foundation event. The Zionsville-based nonprofit organizes several events each year for children with special needs – and their families. Weidner said Shea, now 10, also experienced her first visit with Santa and first carnival ride at foundation events.

“There are opportunities that we would normally not do or seek out, but we do them with (the HAWK Foundation), because we know it’s safe,” Weidner said. “We make sure we go to all of their events.”

The next HAWK Foundation event will be the annual VIP Carnival at the Zionsville Fall Festival. The carnival area will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 9 for children with special

For the Weidners, that wish was getting to attend an Indianapolis Colts game together. The foundation arranged for special accommodations so Shea could join her family at the game.

needs and their families before it is open to the general public.

Weidner, a Zionsville resident, said she’s been to every VIP Carnival, even before the creation of the HAWK Foundation in 2014. The first one was organized by members of the Zionsville Lions Club as part of the 2008 Fall Festival.

Club member Leigh Ann Akard said she had heard about a Lions Club in Texas running a similar event and thought it could work well in Zionsville, because she knew several families with children with special needs. The goal for the first year was to have 75 people attend, but they nearly doubled that amount. Attenwith special needs that sometimes need extra attention,” Weidner said. “I think we forget sometimes they’re the ones that make a lot of sacrifices.”

Thanks to the foundation, Weidner said the entire family was able to enjoy the game. It’s a memory they’ll never forget.

“That solidified for us there was a need,” Akard said. “There are wonderful things out there for special needs persons, not necessarily for the family as a unit.”

So organizers designed the event as an experience for the entire family. Weidner said that helps set the VIP Carnival – and other HAWK Foundation events – apart, and that her sons, Von, 11, and Cruz, 8, want to experience as much as they can “as a family.”

“It’s nice for my boys to see their sister having fun with them,” Weidner said. “It almost makes me cry, because they say they don’t want to go unless Shea’s going.”

Foundation takes flight As the VIP Carnival continued to grow, Lions Club members didn’t want the event to take away from the fundraising efforts of the Fall Festival, but they still wanted families to be able to attend for free. Thus, the idea of forming a separate foundation to run the VIP Carnival was born.

Today, the HAWK Foundation and Lions Club are still intertwined, as many of the foundation’s board members and volunteers are also part of the Lions Club. But the foundation is able to fundraise for the carnival and its other events separately throughout the year.

In addition to the VIP Carnival, the HAWK Foundation organizes a visit with Santa around the holidays and a luau with Santa in the summer. St. Nick, in fact, has become a bit of a mascot for the HAWK Foundation, said Akard, as she believes the spirit of joy and giving should be alive year-round.

“Those families still have needs when it’s 100 degrees outside,” she said. “Maybe they’re not in school, and maybe they need a fan instead of a pair of mittens.”

As the HAWK Foundation continues to expand its influence, Akard said its volunteers benefit as much as those they are serving.

“It just totally proves that you can’t give without being blessed in return,” Akard said.

“While we make these families feel like a million bucks, they touch us just as much if not more. We probably leave there that night feeling better than they did.”

Commentary by Tom Purcell I’m a car guy. As a teen, I spent hours working on my dad’s car, buffing and polishing it with the hope that I’d be permitted to take it out for the night with my friends. The automobile was our ticket to freedom. It saddens me that younger generations, according to a variety of recent studies, couldn’t possibly care less about the automobile. The smartphone is their connection to the outside world, after all, and their Uber driver will take them wherever they want to go. Really, they have no idea what they’re missing. The first car I ever drove was a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. It was then, and still is now, an American icon. My first car, which I bought fresh out of college, was a bright orange 1972 Plymouth Duster. It was nothing to boast about but it was all mine and gave me the freedom to explore God’s great open spaces anytime I pleased. Later came a 1987 Firebird with a T-top roof, which heightened my social life; a 1970 VW Beetle convertible that gave me the best summer of my life; a 1978 MGB convertible a few summers after that; a 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 that had too many mechanical issues; eventually, a new 2010 Nissan Maxima, spacious, sleek and fast, but it was terrible in snow; a new 2012 Jeep Wrangler, for which I traded the 4x4 Jeep and Maxima; and a leased 2013 Infiniti G37X with all-wheel-drive. Now I’m driving a 2008 Toyota 4Runner that is incredibly reliable and spacious. I marvel at its quality. Memories.

Moral misanthropes Commentary by Terry Anker The French actor and playwright JeanBaptiste Poquelin is attributed with saying “I prefer a pleasant vice to an annoying virtue.”

While most of us will not know Monsieur Popuelin even by his stage name, Moliere, we can all too easily identify with his sentiment.

To be sure, we humans are highly resistant to the poorly delivered admonishment of others as they assert their moral, intellectual, financial, or other supposed superiority. We take the ethical example as reprobation rather than inspiration. We will repeatedly choose a polite lie over a harsh truth.

Nevertheless, we have become a nation too eager to embrace vice, and too precious to note the presence or absence of virtue.

Avarice, conceit, greed, sanctimony and fornication are adjectives to describe so many to whom we ascribe our admiration. In place of these words formerly one would find the concepts of prudence, thrift, trust, humility and dedication. Consider the big and memo-

rable stories from the recent Rio Olympic Games. Certainly, a great song, terrific film, amazing play, or electrifying speech may be worth lauding. But what is the ratio in the measure of a person? How many gold medals procured, millions of votes garnered, or billions of dollars earned offsets the reek of moral decay?

Perhaps chief among our vices is our overreaction to annoying virtues. Somewhere along the way, we came to know that the world, like Moliere, prefers a charming scoundrel more than a moral misanthrope. It is understandable, too. But how do we measure the long-term cost of shunning ethical responsibility in the pursuit of hip hedonism?

And if we could, would we behave any differently? If only it were a bit more fun.

I have had it up to the top of my ginger head with mean people! Last week in particular was a doozey. One of humor my daughter’s besties picked a fight with her, jealous over the amount of time she’d been spending with another classmate. A man completely went off on me in a school parking lot, angry that I hadn’t seen his turn signal. And some old biddy was unhelpful to the point of being obstructive to a friend of mine.

Can’t we all get along?

My daughter’s gal pal I can somewhat excuse. She’s at that age where friendships are both sacred and flighty, and girl drama rules. Insecurities, immaturity, and even the lunch menu can create intense situations that no one under 20 can be expected to handle gracefully. It doesn’t help that my child is Miss Sensitive, so the idea that somebody is mad at her, however irrational the reason, sends her into hysterics, which I’m then supposed to “handle.” No can do, my darling. Mom out!

The guy at the school I just don’t get at all. I was in a long line of carpool traffic and honestly never saw his signal indicating his intention to park in a spot he’d already missed. So when he started to reverse, I honked. And kept right on honking until he finally stopped, rolled down his window, and screamed me the riot act. Pardon me, sir, but where are your manners? Rudeness only earns you a spot on my Dill-hole list, which beeteedubs, has just been updated.

The next morning, a former colleague relayed her own mean people story. While requesting her transcript for a job application, the bitter spinster in charge outright refused to forward it because she thought the place of employment wouldn’t be interested in someone who didn’t have the “right qualifications.” What the what?

Even if you are cold and dead inside, you shouldn’t treat people like that.

Be nice! If nothing else, showing compassion will keep you off this dance mom’s poo list. Remember, I have melodramatic tweens and frustrated job-seekers as allies. Peace out.

Playing chicken Commentary by Dick Wolfsie What’s better than rotisserie chicken? It’s inexpensive, tasty and relatively healthful, a win-win all the way around … humor and around, and around. But Mary Ellen and I don’t rotisserize our own. We prefer the plump, herbencrusted delights at Sam’s Club or Costco. At $4.95, it’s worth the drive.

We recently made the trip, hoping to get in and out quickly, since all we wanted was the chicken. On the way to the back of the store, I picked up a new iPad. There was a good deal on printer ink. I also grabbed two cases of imported beer. We selected our chicken, and on the way up to the register, Mary Ellen stocked up on some chocolate truffles they were featuring … oh, and two bottles of her favorite wine. We tasted some yummy mini eggrolls a woman was offering as samples, and then we bought several boxes to freeze.

At the register, the clerk totaled our purchases. “Boy that chicken smells delish,” she said.

“I know,” I responded. “How can they possibly afford to sell an entire cooked chicken for only $4.95?”

“I don’t know. Okay, that will be $640. Enjoy

your dinner.”

A few days later, I read in USA Today that the rotisserie chicken conglomerate (which sounds like a bad recipe for the leftovers) is coming under some heat. Consumer advocates are questioning whether a prepared bird from Costco or Sam’s Club is really worth the price on a per-pound basis. Consumers Digest claims that the rotisserie chicken “looks cheap, but it’s really not, which can easily mislead people.” (I remember my father saying something like this to my sister when she started wearing makeup in the ninth grade.)

When my wife read this, she started to buy fresh chickens out of the refrigerated case again. After she gets the birds home she gives them a very careful inspection, wiggling the wings and legs, then poking the breasts and finally sniffing them thoroughly. She was sure one particular chicken wasn’t any good.

I told her neither of us could pass a test like that, either.

Carmel on Canvas returns for third year

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Carmel on Canvas will bring plein air painters to the streets of the Arts and Design District for the third year.

Jerry Points created the event when he had the art Eye on Art gallery in Carmel and recognized the national exposure plein air painting events were getting. Plein air is a painting that is completed outside.

“There is such an increase in plein air painters participating in these events, and with that comes a number of people that want to see it,” Points said. “This is an open paint out where anyone can participate. The joy I think in what it offers to the public is the fact that you have artists that are trying to create original paintings based on what they’re looking at.”

There is a $5,000 first place prize and $13,000 in additional prizes. The event is expected to draw 150 artists. There is a professional division and a non-professional division, as well as two quick paints and a teen division.

On Sept. 18 from 2 to 5 p.m., artists will sell artwork in the park just south of Bub’s Burgers.

On Sept. 17, a judge will determine winners, and a reception will be held at 6 p.m. with awards presented at 7 p.m. on 2nd Ave. NW. Points said most paintings are completed in two to three hours.

“Coming into town, you’re going to see a number of people on the street and side streets and off of the Monon trail painting, and it’s easy to go from one to the other to see how their progress is going,” he said.

Local agencies partner for fair

“Where can we reach the SAfety most amount of people in an event that is already having such success while still being able to be putting our best foot forward? The Fall Festival was the logical choice,” said Sgt. Adrian Martin, ZPD public information officer. “We expect anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000, depending on the weather the two days. That’s why we made the switch from National Night Out (an event that promotes community-police partnerships which ZPD previously conducted).”

The Public Safety Fair is from noon to 6 p.m.

Sept. 10 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 11. Joining the Zionsville Police Dept. are Boone County Sheriff’s Office and Zionsville Fire Dept.

“Each agency will be there to answer questions,” Martin said.

Martin said his department and BCSO will combine on a K-9 demonstration at 2:30 p.m.

ZFD Deputy Brian Miller said his department has a long history with the Fall Festival.

“Back when I was a kid, the fire department was there,” Miller said. “We’ll have a safety trailer that is an educational prop that we’ll use for in-home fire safety and severe weather safety. We’ll have that available for the public to walk through.”

Miller said children can try on fire department gear and simulate putting out a house fire.

He also said ZFD will work with the American Heart Association to present a hands-on CPR program at 1:15 p.m. Sept. 11.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The 2016 Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival marks the fourth year that the Zionsville Alpha Leo Club will organize Leopalooza. teens The Leo Club is the youth branch of the Lions Club, and Leopalooza serves as a recruiting tool for the Alpha Leos and provides a drug- and alcohol-free party for teens.

Leopalooza is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m.

Sept. 17 at the gazebo in Lions Park. The party is designated for ages 12 to 18. DJ Blazin Traxx will provide music and a lights show.

“Fall Festival is created and tailored to try to have something for everyone in our community,” Fall Festival Chair Tim Reinhart said.

“We have arts and crafts and commercial vendors that tailor toward other types of folks, a kids’ corner for families with younger kids, and the lounge for adults. Leopalooza fits the (teens) and the parents know where they are in the park, and the parents can be doing their own thing in the park or in the carnival area. It was an idea to help give another opportunity to be in an area where drugs and alcohol are not present.”

The Impalas return to Lions Lounge

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It wasn’t tough to decide who would provide entertainment in the Lions Lounge at the 2016 Fall Festival. The Impalas music were such a big hit last year that organizers booked them for this year’s event the next day.

“We had the biggest crowd ever last year,” Lions Lounge organizer Keith Shepherd said.

“We had such good feedback.”

Other staples of the lounge, for guests 21 and older, will return, too, including yard games and refillable souvenir mugs.

Guests can also enjoy wine and Sun King beer. They are welcome to purchase food elsewhere at the festival and bring it inside the lounge.

The Lions Lounge opens at 5 p.m. Sept. 10 with The Impalas taking the stage at 7 p.m.

The party is expected to last until 11 p.m. or so.

Shepherd said the lounge is a great place for parents of older kids to relax while their children enjoy the carnival, LeoPalooza or other attractions at the Fall Festival.

The cover charge is $5.

In addition to the annual parade event Sept. 10, sponsored by the Zionsville Lions Club, the Great Lakes Shrine Association will run its parade. The association is having its fall ceremonial and business session Sept. 7 to 11 in Indianapolis.

“They always do a parade at their annual meeting, so in addition to the Zionsville entries there will be 60 to 70 Shrine entries,” said George Tikijian, who has been the parade chairman for 20 years.

To accommodate the added parade entries, Tikijian, a Zionsville resident, said the parade will start at 9:30 a.m., 45 minutes earlier than last year. The Zionsville portion will be held first, then immediately following will be the Shriners parade, which traditionally features miniature cars and clowns.

“A Lions Club member (Phil Thrasher) who is a coordinator for the (Great Lakes) Shrine Association got in touch with us and suggested we put the parades together,” Tikijian said. “It will probably be 45 minutes to an hour longer than our normal parade.”

The parade starts at Zionsville Community High School and continues to Main Street in downtown ZIonsville.

The Zionsville parade typically has between 100 and 120 entries.

“But to keep the parade reasonable in length, we are going to be down to about 80 entries this year,” Tikijian said.

Tikijian said among the parade participants will be the ZCHS band, a combined band from the two middle schools, the Zionsville Fire Dept. color guard and the Zionsville Police Dept.

Bark for Life set for Sept. 11

By Sierra Solis news@currentzionsville.com Animals and their owners will come together for one cause at the Bark for Life relay, organized by the American Cancer event Society.

The event has been incorporated into the annual Fall Festival and will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 11 at Lions Park. Cost is $20 for one dog and $5 for additional dogs.

There is no fee for owners.

“Individuals are not only affected by cancer, but their pets are, as well. This is a program that’s intended to reach both audiences, because the fight against cancer is the fight against cancer regardless of who’s going through that, whether it is a family member, a friend, a neighbor or your favorite four-legged friend,” American Cancer Society Manager Jordan Brewer said.

Brewer became a caregiver for his mother at a young age when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been involved in the cause ever since.

Canines and their owners will participate in a ceremonial walk honoring those who have struggled, both human and animal, with cancer. The event will feature speakers who have been affected by the disease and will offer games and contests. ”Dogs are a primary caregiver for cancer patients,” Brewer said. “So this is a way to

The Humane Society for Boone County will return this year with pet adoptions. Midwest Search Dogs will also be back for another year with an informational booth, plus demonstrations on how their dogs work to save lives.

Officer Brad Keifer and police dog Eso, Heffner said. On Sept. 11, Animalia will be back with three new shows in the Exposition Tent.

Heffner said every year organizers try to make Pet Pavilion the “best one yet” and believe this year’s additions will continue to build on that success.

“There is something for every member of the family with an emphasis on fun for the young and young at heart,” he said. “Check us out, we promise to entertain and educate at the same time.”

Auction features ’80s items

Shop, learn at 40 vendors

With the Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival featuring a “Back to the ‘80s” theme this year, silent auctionfundraiser goers will notice certain ‘80s collectible items available at the annual auction set for 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Lions Park, 115 S. Elm St. Mike Moran is taking over as silent auction chair from Jennifer Blandford, who had organized it for several years.

On average, approximately 20,000 people visit the Fall Festival. Moran said last year’s silent auction raised $24,000.

“That’s definitely our goal again this year,” Moran said. “With the change of hands, it is definitely my goal to try to at least match what she was able to bring in last year. She had done it for the past 10 years, so I’m hoping to do just as well as she has.”

Moran said there should be approximately 250 to 300 auction items. The auction also is available online. Bidding is already open.

“This is the only event (the Lions) have out here where (vendors) can let people know they’re available,” Commercial Vendor Chair Bonnie Kincaid said. “A lot of new businesses coming to town like to do this and introduce themselves to the public. Most of them give out free gifts or raffles and drawings and things to sign up for.”

Kincaid said that many of the vendors have participated in previous festivals, and many want the same spot they had the year before.

Kincaid began handling the commercial vendors under the tent in 1974, and she began

New food vendor joins lineup

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Eight of the nine food vendors coming to the Zionsville Lions Club’s Fall Festival are returning, and the ninth is a new Eats one that will provide tornado potatoes, bistro burgers and loaded pork fries.

Other vendors include the Zionsville Lions Club, Greek’s Pizzeria, Chick-fil-A, Nacho Mama and others. Items include nachos, cotton candy, barbeque chicken, hotdogs, tenderloins, snow cones, Philly cheesesteaks, tacos, kettle corn, roasted nuts, elephant ears, lemon shake-ups and more.

Proceeds are split between the vendors and the Zionsville Lions Club.

“Come and meet some of our great vendors and help benefit the park to keep it looking great,” Food Vendor Chair Steve Gayheart said. “(Proceeds) go toward our Lions Club, and part of our mission is to keep the park nice. We

are also associated with sight and hearing and diabetes, and we are sponsored by Lions International, so some money goes to help those funds, as well.”

Food vendors will be in the outfield of Lions Park in the northwest corner of the park at 115 S. Elm St. Food is purchased via cash only at the vendor booths. Gayheart said the most popular vendor in years past has been the Lions Club booth.

Other than at the Lions Lounge, a 21-andolder only area available during the festival, there is no alcohol at the park. Food vendors will be open the entire festival Sept. 10 and 11, and Chick-fil-A is donating food to cater the VIP event to benefit families that have children with special needs Sept. 9.

Kids’ Corner Chair Lee Ann Balta said the area will have most of the same vendors as last year. Indy Science Fun will provide hands-on science experiments geared toward kids and families. “I think that it is a great place for families with school-aged children to experience great, hands-on activities,” said Balta, who has been the Kids’ Corner chair for seven years. “It’s important that they have physical and aesthetic learning for those children because they get a lot of sit-down learning, so this is an opportunity to take advantage of their bodies and minds.”

Celebration Station, an area with bounce houses and other activities, will be available for children to explore by purchasing tickets.

Coley to share memories

“The audience can come in for music an hour-and-a-half and forget about all the nonsense going on outside those doors,” Coley said. “They can take a trip down memory lane and enjoy themselves and not think about what’s going in Milwaukee (recent riots) for the moment.”

Coley and former Hollies singer Terry Sylvester, 69, will play at 8 p.m. Sept 10 at The Warehouse, 254 1st Ave. SW, Carmel.

Coley, 67, plays his 1970s hits with England Dan such as “Nights are Forever Without You,” “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” and “Love is the Answer.” Dan Seals, younger brother of Jim Seals of Seals and Croft, died in 2009.

Sylvester and Coley typically play a few times together through the year.

Some of the Hollies’ hits include “Carrie Ann,” “Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)” and “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.” Coley said the Hollies’ “The Air That I Breathe” is his personal favorite.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire Commentary by Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Annually we survey and observe tailgaters throughout this area, and the findings have changed only slightly over the last 20 years.

The most popular food for tailgaters and Americans in general is the sandwich. So what kind of sandwich is always a hit?

We have found that the bratwurst is the favorite hot sandwich with 31 percent of tailgaters but it wasn’t always so. Back in the mid-90s we served a tailgate party to the student staffers for Penn State press box. Most of them had not even heard of brats. Today that’s not the case. Johnsonville, the country’s leader in sausage, has brats for sale from Maine to California. Here are the two favorite sandwiches of tailgaters: • Bratwurst – 31 percent • Hamburgers – 13.2 percent When you see sausages cooking and there’s smoke and flames flaring up, don’t eat them - just walk away. All those flames and clouds of smoke mean the juices have escaped the sausage’s casing (outer skin) and fallen onto the coals or fire.

Here’s an important point: don’t break the sausage casing with anything but your teeth.

Put away those metal tongs and forks. So how do you cook brats so that they squirt juice into your mouth? Here is a recipe and directions for the best brats you ever had.

Preparation: Day before - Place the uncooked brats into a sauce pan and cover them with beer. Bring the beer to a simmer and cook the sausages for 20 minutes. This process cooks the inside of the sausage without breaking the casings. After 20 minutes, remove the pan from the heat and cool it with ice and cold water. When cooled, take the brats out of the water with your bare hands (no metal) and place them into a plastic zip bag and store them overnight in your fridge.

On game day - Put the zip bag into your food cooler for transport to the stadium. Spray your grill with cooking spray and then heat it to cook the brats. Using gloves (clean white cotton work gloves are fine) place the brats onto the grill. Keep a pot of cold water handy to dip the gloves into to protect your hands.

Turn the brats until they are as brown as you want on all sides.

Treat the kids to baked banana bread for breakfast this fall Commentary by Beth Aasen Co-owner of Donatello’s Italian Restaurant School supplies have been purchased, and kids are back in school, which can only mean it’s time for fall.

If you work a lot, it can be hard to make a fresh breakfast for your kids every morning, and you feel bad serving them cold cereal and milk every day. A fun breakfast they’ll love could be a freshly baked banana nut bread.

Kids can wrap and take it with them if they’re in a hurry.

I know what you’re thinking, “Doesn’t she own an Italian restaurant?” Yes, but my family enjoys all types of foods. This is one autumn treat my mother would make for us when we were kids.

Ingredients: 2 cups unbleached allpurpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 12 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, 2 large eggs, 3 very ripe bananas, peeled and mashed (about 1 1/2 cups),

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1 cup chopped walnuts, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat the inside of a cooking pan with cooking spray, preferably a 9-by-5-inch loaf span. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a medium mixing bowl.

Combine the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl and then with a mixer on medium-high speed cream together the ingredients until fluffy. This hould take two to three minutes. Add the eggs, bananas and vanilla and beat until smooth. With a wooden spoon, stir in the mixture until just combined and then stir in the chopped walnuts.

Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and bake the loaf for 50 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in comes out clean. Let cool for five minutes in the pan before removing.

If you like, you can sprinkle powdered sugar on top or spread a white cream cheese icing on the outside of the banana bread to make it a dessert.

Cast named for ‘Into the Woods’

Three Hamilton County actors have earned roles in the large cast of “Into the Woods,” debuting at the Beef & Boards theater Dinner Theatre Oct. 6. The dinner theatre on the northwest side of Indianapolis recently announced the 15-member cast for the Brothers Grimm tale.

The cast will include Danny Kingston, Westfield, will play Jack, a role he performed a decade ago when he attended Westfield High School.

Don Farrell, Carmel, the co-founder of and producing Kingston artistic director for Carmel’s Actors Theatre of Indiana, will play the baker.

Grace Sell, Noblesville, will have two roles, Cinderella’s stepmother and Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother.

The cast also includes five actors from Indianapolis: Suzanne Stark, a former Carmel resident, who will play Jack’s mother; Jaddy Ciucci, who will portray Little Red Riding Hood; and A.J. Morrison and Christine Zavakos, who

will play Steward and Florinda, respectively.

The musical earned Tony Awards for book by James Lapine and score by Stephen Sondheim and starred multi-award winning actress Meryl Streep as the witch. Originally opening on Broadway in 1987, “Into the Woods” was brought to the big screen by Disney in 2014. The film version earned three Oscar nominations.

“With the recent successful productions of ‘The Addams Family,’ ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Chicago’ on our stage, we felt we could choose a show that had a little more of a dramatic tone,” said Douglas E. Stark, Farrell executive director. “With its success on Broadway and Disney, ‘Into the Woods’ has developed a wider audience ap peal, and we felt we needed to place it in our season.”

“Into the Woods” is on stage for 49 performances through Nov. 20. Tickets range from $41 to $66 and include Chef Odell Ward’s dinner buffet and select beverages. For tickets, call the box office at 317-872-9664.

Aiming for a healthy weight Commentary by Debra Balos, DO, IU Health Physicians Family Medicine Believing that “thin is in” overlooks the true definition of what it means to be healthy.

Although weight family medicine management is important, a lower number on the scale doesn’t necessarily mean you’re healthier. In addition to maintaining a reasonable weight, optimal health is based on many factors, including good nutrition, regular exercise, quality sleep and sound well-being.

Setting realistic weight loss goals isn’t a bad idea. In fact, many people can gain health benefits by shedding a few pounds. Your primary care doctor can help you set achievable goals and assist in determining a weight range you should aim for given your body type and age. By checking your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar, he or she also can assess your risk of heart attack or stroke and tell whether your weight increases your risk.

When thinking about weight loss, remember that health can be improved by losing just 5 to 10 percent of your body weight. Modest weight loss, even just five or 10 pounds, can

make you feel better and increase your energy level. Instead of focusing on how much weight you think you should lose, work to make longterm lifestyle changes that will benefit your overall health: • Eat healthier – Make vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein the backbone of your diet. Cut down on serving sizes, and learn to know when you’re full.

• Exercise daily – Try to fit at least 30 minutes of physical activity into your day. This doesn’t have to be at a gym or in a class. When pressed for time, take a brisk walk at lunchtime or climb extra flights of stairs between meetings or before work.

Most importantly, ban the notion that “thin is in,” and commit to sensibly managing your weight and improving your health and well-being.

When RLTurner started, the company did residential construction. Bob said as it grew it became more commercial.

“We did the Methodist Church, Boys and Girls Club, Presbyterian Church and Old National Bank (in Zionsville),” Bob said.

RLTurner will work on the new Town Hall project in Zionsville.

Bob said the open house will give RLTurner officials and employees a chance to say thank you to the community.

“We’re very blessed to have a lot of repeat business,” Bob said. “Our employees stay here.

We don’t have a lot of turnover.”

The area between the Meijer gas station and Goodwill along Main Street in Whitestown will soon be home development to a pet store and five other retailers.

Development of the parcel of land was unanimously approved in August by the town’s plan commission.

The 14,500 square-foot, one-story building will be built on a 1.65 acre parcel. Of that, 7,500 square feet will house a Pet Supplies Plus store. That leaves room for two to five

additional tenants. The building’s owner has been in talks with some restaurants, according to Whitestown Assistant Town Manager Tanya Sumner.

The engineering firm on the project, HWC Engineering, is the same company that designed Villages I, II, III and IV, so the development is expected to look similar to the other new buildings around Meijer.

“This is the only development by this particular developer right now. But there is a lot more potential development going on in this area by several other developers,” Sumner said.

July numbers show fewer homes on the market Commentary by Jim Litten In the 14-county region F.C. Tucker tracks, approximately 10,000 homes were on the market in July, a 16.5 percent real estate drop, or approximately 2,000 fewer homes for sale, compared to July 2015. Although July 2016 saw fewer pended sales than July 2016, yearto-date sales are still ahead of last year by 3 percent. And average home prices continue to inch upwards, now 1.3 percent ahead of 2015.

In July, Boone County had 383 active listings, a decrease of 9 percent from this time last year. Pended sales also declined 2.8 percent in July, but year-to-date sales climbed ahead by 8.7 percent. The average sales price also rose 3.1 percent, now at $290,019.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sales price increased 3.3 percent to $396,803.

• Inventory moved at a slower pace in Zionsville in July 2016. Overall, homes sold in 80 days – 17 more days than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had approximately

the same amount of options available to them. Last month, 195 homes were available for sale – two more homes compared to July 2015.

• Pended home sales decreased in Zionsville. In July 2016, 50 homes sold – a decrease of seven homes compared to July 2015.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, three were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 28 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; 11 were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and eight were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

We’re seeing the effects of low inventory throughout central Indiana. Low inventory affects affordability, which is a crucial part of the housing market. When more affordable homes proliferate throughout the market, then we’ll see more positive gains for everyone overall.

Golden Temple of equality Commentary by Don Knebel The Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, is the holiest spot on earth for millions. The people who worship there provide an travel example of living out the teachings of one’s religious beliefs.

In the 15th century, Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, came to a tranquil lake in the Punjab region of northwest India to meditate.

That lake and the city that grew up around it became known as “Amritsar,” the tank of immortal nectar. Beginning in 1577, the fifth guru of Sikhism squared the lake and erected a gurdwara, or temple, in the middle of it to hold the Granth Sahib, the holy scriptures of Sikhism. The temple, officially named “Harmandir Sahib,” the abode of God, was modified to its current configuration in the 18th century. In the early 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, a Sikh ruler, covered the exterior with gilded copper, giving the temple its popular name. The square temple, resting on a square platform, has four entrances, symbolizing the Sikh teaching that all people and religions are entitled to equal

respect. The temple’s design incorporates both traditional Hindu and Islamic elements, again reflecting the spiritual tolerance at the heart of the Sikh religion.

Each day, from before dawn to past sunset, more than 100,000 visitors from around the world, with bare feet and covered heads, silently file past the original Granth Sahib, housed on the first floor of the Golden Temple.

Musicians sitting beside the holy book, considered the Sikh’s 11th and final guru, chant hymns, accompanied by instruments. Before entering, some worshippers bathe in the lake, purifying their souls. Afterwards, visitors of any faith can enjoy a free meal of lentils and flatbread prepared by legions of volunteers working in a huge kitchen nearby. For Sikhs, faith is as much a matter of doing as believing.
