ZCS relies on community support

By Sara Baldwin news@currentzionsville.com Members of the Zionsville community gathered at the Educational Services Center Aug. 22 for the second Zionsville education Community Schools State of the School Address, presented by the Zionsville Education Foundation and Zionsville Chamber of Commerce.

ZCS Supt. Scott Robison outlined the core mission of ZCS — student growth — and discussed recent highlights as well as the goals and challenges of the 2017-18 school year.

Robison’s presentation focused on creating a support system for students through various avenues. He noted the value of a strong community and the need for employers, mentors and coaches to play supporting roles to the school system.

“Multiple structures in the community must come together for the common good,” Robison said. “We are part of a bigger ‘we,’ and we are in this together.”

One component of community support is taxes and referendums.

ZCS Chief Financial Officer Mike Shafer discussed the importance of fiscal stewardship.

He said the Zionsville community is sustaining tax rates at a level approximately 30 cents below the 2014 rate. A visual comparison of 2015 tax rates showed that Zionsville’s taxes are lower than Avon, Noblesville, Westfield, IPS and Washington Township, among others.

Shafer and Robison explained that Zionsville needs referendums for school funding because it is the least-funded school system in the state. All referendum funds go to teacher and staff salaries. ZCS will hold a budget hearing at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 p.m. in the Educational

by Harley Guynn, a World War II veteran and gunner’s mate on the USS Maryland, which was hit by two bombs during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The display case includes a portion of the memorabilia Guynn donated to the school, including a piece of the USS Maryland’s deck, a replica of the ship’s bell and the shorts Guynn wore on the morning of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“These artifacts represent a critical era in American history, and it’s important that we don’t forget it,” Strachan said. “But more important than remembering the event or the era is remembering the people.”

David Rodgers, a ZCHS history and government teacher, encountered Guynn when he spoke to ZCHS students in 2006 and during an Indy Honor Flight in 2008. The two met

again in 2013 when Guynn was asked to be the escort for the homecoming queen.

Rodgers said during Guynn’s presentations to the students, he emphasized that he was just a kid from Indiana, barely older than the students of ZCHS when he went to war at age 19. Guynn died last year at 91.

“It was important to him that succeeding generations not forget what his generation went through, and that we as a country remain vigilant and prepared,” Rodgers said. “But (it was) also important that these generations knew that they, too, could rise to any challenges they might face.”

Motherhood photo goes viral

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com A photo of a local mom taken unexpectedly by a stranger at a grocery store has gone viral, surpassing 163,000 family Facebook likes garnering, nearly 6,000 comments and more than 26,000 shares.

Jess Wolfe, 31, was in the middle of a typical trip to Aldi on Michigan Road with her four children when she was approached by a woman who wanted to take a photograph of them.

Wolfe said the woman told her that she wished she had photographs of herself doing everyday things with her own kids and that she knows how hard it is to go to the grocery with children in tow.

The woman shot the photo with Wolfe’s smart phone. Wolfe then posted it on social media.

“Unlike most people, who just tell me how much I will miss these days, she said she definitely doesn’t miss what made the days hard, like rowdy kids in a grocery store, but she misses what makes them sweet,” she said.

ZIONSVILLE The right lane of northbound CONSTRUCTION Michigan Road is closed between DePauw Boulevard and the onramp to eastbound I-465 until Sept. 15 for the construction of a dedicated right turn lane.

Construction is nearly complete on a new roundabout at the intersection of Ford and Mulberry roads. Striping and pavement marking are tentatively expected to wrap up by Sept. 8.

CARMEL Construction is underway on a new roundabout at Fourth Street and Range Line Road. The project includes deconstructing the south Arts & Design District arch, which will be rebuilt and reinstalled during the anticipated 30-day closure. Alternate routes include Keystone Parkway, Fourth Avenue S.W., Main Street and 126th St. Gray Road and 126th Street closed Aug. 21 for construction of a roundabout.

The project is expected to take 60 days, weather permitting.

City Center Drive and Guilford Road is scheduled to close on or after Sept. 5 for construction of a roundabout. The project is expected to take 45 days, weather permitting.

Construction continues on a roundabout at Carmel Drive and Guilford Road.

This will be a full closure of the intersection until Sept. 2 or earlier, weather permitting. Detour routes will be marked as Pennsylvania and Range Line Road (northsouth) and Main Street and 116th Street (east-west).

The intersection of Towne Road and 116th Street is closed for the construction of a two-lane roundabout. It is expected to reopen on or after Sept. 13.

Spring Mill Road is closed south of the Main Street roundabout to 111th Street except for local traffic. Motorists are encouraged to use Illinois Street as a detour.

WESTFIELD Utility relocations are underway at 186th Street and Spring Mill Road. The project will start this month and will be completed by the end of the year. The project includes construction of a roundabout at the intersection and a new boulevard roadway construction to Kinsey Avenue.

The roundabout portion of the ongoing Ditch Road project will open by the end of this month. The remaining leg of the project, on Ind. 32, will be closed until September.

Sprint triathlon returns Sept. 17

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Sprint Triathlon had a successful debut last year, and the second running looks just as competition promising.

“We’re well ahead of last year’s pace (of entries),” said Zionsville resident Ron Martin, who coordinates the bicycle portion and event volunteers.

“We’re going to cap it at 150 (participants) just so we can manage it. That’s how many we had last year.”

The second annual Zionsville Sprint Triathlon is set to start at 8 a.m. Sept. 17 at Azionaqua Swim Club, 4875 Willow Rd. The first event is a 200-yard swim, followed by a 12-mile bicycle race and 5K (3.1mile) run. There are multiple age groups in five-year brackets for males and females, ranging from 15 to 19 and 75 years and older. Martin said all age group winners receive a prize.

“The prizes are unique. I have a stack of bricks from Main Street that were taken out 15 to 20 years ago,” Martin said. “We’re taking those bricks and cutting them into smaller pieces and putting plaques on them. The top finishers will get a bigger

Noblesville’s Nate Littlefield won last year’s triathlon in 53 minutes and 23 seconds.

The 2016 event raised more than $4,000 to support charitable causes the Rotary Club supports. It is the club’s major fundraiser for the year.

Zionsville doctor leads cycling trip to benefit myeloma research

So Abonour, an Indiana cover story University Simon Cancer Center physician and myeloma researcher, has led Miles for Myeloma since 2005. The two-day cycling event was created to raise awareness about the disease caused by cancerous plasma cells and raise funds for research and care designed to improve treatments for the rare disease.

Abonour, a Zionsville resident, used to compete in marathons.

To raise funds for myeloma research, a patient suggested a 5K run, but Abonour knows there are many of those types of fundraisers.

“I had an idea you come to me for a second opinion, why don’t I go to your town and spread the word about the disease,” Abonour said. “Instead of getting in a car, my goal was to do an ultimate marathon. The first year was 120 miles to Indianapolis to Ft. Wayne.”

So Abonour divided it into running and cycling.

The distances started getting longer, so after four years of running and cycling, it became just a cycling event.

“It kept me staying active, and the best thing about it is it’s all organized by the patients,” Abonour said. “They figure out the routes. They call police for escorts in tough areas. They bring us food and drink. It’s an amazing tribute to the kindness of people.”

Abonour said he has patients and family members of patients riding as well as family members of former patients who have died.

“Every time we take a break, we take time to honor someone who has battled this ugly disease,” Abonour said.

In the previous 12 years, Miles for Myeloma has made its trek to places such as South Bend, Cincinnati, Columbus, Ohio, Evansville and St. Louis.

“My favorite ride was the fifth year when we went to Evansville through Bloomington,” Abonour said. “It was hilly and beautiful.”

This year the cyclists will go to Muncie by way of Richmond the first day, Sept. 15. The group starts and finishes at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. It concludes with a celebration dinner.

“I have a patient who has been doing the whole thing for seven years,” Abonour said.

“Some patients will do part of it.”

Patients have fundraising pages to encourage donations in their honor for the ride.

Miles for Myeloma has raised more than $3

million over the years for research at IU Simon Cancer Center.

“Every year we shoot for $300,000 or $400,000,” Abonour said, Abonour said the rare disease accounts for 1 percent of all cancers.

“It’s a horrible disease, because it can damage the bones, damage the kidneys and cause anemia,” Abonour said. “Survival has improved significantly. We’ve done a lot of research with new drugs. A patient who was living two to three years is now living 15 to 20 years (after diagnosis).”

Abonour, who was born in Syria, has been with IU since 1995. He finished medical school in Syria and his training at the University of Wisconsin.

Abonour has lived in Zionsville for 22 years.

Both his children, Rabi, 26, and Mara, 24, graduated from Zionsville Community High School.

“I love (how Miles for Myeloma) brings everyone together, the patient, their family, doctor, researcher, are all together trying to spread the word about the disease and figuring out what to do next,” Abonour said. “We laugh and cry at the same time. I just hope one day we don’t have to do this and say we cured this disease. This disease can be ugly at the end.

It’s really a monster.”

Carmel resident Pam Taylor was diagnosed with myeloma 15 years ago.

“Dr. Abonour is keeping me going. He’s the best,” Taylor said. “When I was first diagnosed, there were only a handful of drugs to treat the disease. And now, due to research all over the world, there are lots of options to put out there, because part of the disease is as we are treated with one drug you eventually become resistant (to). Then we have to throw something new at it.”

Taylor, 70, and her husband, Dub, volunteer every year to help with Miles for Myeloma.

“We’ve been on the committee all 13 years,” Taylor said. “At the beginning we did follow the riders in the support vehicles for the first several years. But now, with my disease and our advancing age, it’s hard for us to do that. But we go to the facility to set up a registration table.”

Greenwood resident Linda Gibson’s husband, John, died from myeloma at 67 in 2008 after being diagnosed in 2005.

“It’s the new drugs they are coming out with and the treatment options,” Gibson said. “It used to be you need a stem cell or bone marrow transplant to have good odds.

Now, a lot of people take other things and avoid that horrible ordeal. “ Until this year, Gibson, 70, had helped with the route and finding stops along the way for riders to hydrate or have bathroom breaks. Health issues have limited her involvement this year, but she expects to be more involved next year.

“There were a lot of tough decisions I had to make when John died, but this was one of the easiest ones to stay involved,” said Gibson, citing the need for research funding.

The silly little rituals that we do become the distinct and enormously important markers that identify us as a part of, or excluded from, a social group. A pierced ear can imply one thing for a man, a different thing for a woman, and yet another for a child. Why don’t we pierce our pet’s ears but we do to the animals we eat? And a piercing in the eyebrow, nose or nether region can project an entirely different message. Still, why do we feel compelled to stick any foreign object through our bodies?

The rituals around food are among the most varied and interesting. Much is related to resources. If we keep animals that produce milk, we eat cheese. If we live by the sea, we eat fish. We prepare, serve, share and consume our meals along very old and established lines. Growing up in rural Indiana, fresh vegetables were abundant and cheap. Each meal included crudités, a platter of them, raw. No civilized restaurant would dare start a meal without them.

Today, this pattern, one could imagine, has been replaced by the review and consideration of the appetizer. How is it that we came to need food to make us hungry for more food? It may be true that there is nothing better than a deep-fried jalapeno popper with a cold beer. Yet, isn’t small food still food?

When is the thing that we believe to be the warm-up actually the thing itself? Can we claim that the set-up is somehow different from the doing without deceiving ourselves into believing that small food calories don’t count? When we imagine that we are waiting to begin living our lives, are we simply living a different life already?

Insufferable (adjective): too extreme to bear; intolerable.

I’m bringing the term back, humor my friends. Why? Because I find myself using this wonderfully crafted word almost every single day – starting with one of my daughters.

Don’t get me wrong. I love her. She’s weird, but in a cool, I-don’t-give-a-rat’stail-about-what-any-of-you-think way. Her self-confidence is truly astonishing, given her questionable sense of style and her often-untamable mane of red hair. But she spends a large portion of her week with her color guard pals, 70-plus teenage girls who are wading through the drama of high school; sometimes together, sometimes not so much. Every night when I drive her home, I’m subjected to the latest “Mom, can you believe she did that?” and “Can I just tell you what happened with (insert girl’s name here)?” Trust me when I say it is with sheer force of will that I can keep from openly eye-rolling. Verdict? My daughter has become insufferable. Because I never hear “Hi, Mom. How was your day?” Or even “Can we talk about those Kardashians?”

Our half-hour together is literally her venting about people I don’t know and how she’s clearly above it all.

Insufferable also comes to mind whenever I hear our president. Whether he’s tweeting, campaigning or speaking off-script, I’m reminded of my 16-year-old. Just like her, he’s too extreme to bear. That’s insufferable, folks. I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s far more poetic than “poop show,” which is what I used to call him and, arguably, more on point. Luckily, I’m not required by parenting law to love him! Peace out.

Observations about Hurricane Harvey Commentary by Ward Degler Our first response was prayers for friends and family in Houston. My wife was on the phone plain talk whenever she could get through. We watched the devastation on television.

Later we heard about courageous acts. Mothers carrying children on their shoulders through chin-deep water. A man from high, dry ground hauling his boat halfway across the state to put it to work in flood waters. Three teenage boys borrowing their parents’ small fishing boat and rescuing 50 men, women, children and pets. First responders working around the clock, surviving on crackers and sleeping in five-minute naps.

So far the death toll has been small.

Unlike Hurricane Katrina, where medical crews explored house after flooded house on a mission of rescue, only to spray paint numbers and letters on the roof denoting the dead within.

Every hurricane is deadly. Strangely, Harvey subsided to tropical storm status shortly after reaching shore. And then it sat there inundating the land with rain.

As much as 50 to 60 inches in less than three days.

It’s hard to fathom that kind of rain.

It comes down so hard it’s difficult to

breathe and almost impossible to see.

Roads, sidewalks, parking lots and back yards instantly become one giant lake.

My first tour in the Navy was aboard a World War II destroyer in the Pacific. We spent 10 days in the South China Sea riding out a typhoon. We clocked winds at 90 mph across the deck. Waves as tall as office buildings smashed portholes and hatches on the ship.

When we finally limped into port we had one sailor with a broken leg, two others with broken arms, plus several concussions. No one on the ship had eaten for days and no one could remember the last time he slept.

The scene ashore was worse. Entire buildings on the naval base had blown away. Cars, trucks and even a bulldozer wound up in the water 100 yards away from shore. Tired as we were, every crew member that could walk eagerly pitched in to help set up emergency services.

We survived, of course, and so will the victims of Harvey. Especially with the brand of courage we have already seen.

Remembering Jerry Lewis Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I dedicated my performance at Indy Fringe last week to the late Jerry Lewis. Born Jerry Levtich, he humor traced his ancestry to Eastern Europe, the origins of classic Jewish literature and the humor that came as a response to the repression Jews experienced for millennia. I never met Jerry Lewis, but my closest friend for almost 60 years, Burt Dubrow (now an independent TV producer in L.A)., worked with Jerry on several of his Muscular Dystrophy Telethons. I talked to Burt about his hero and mine.

How would Jerry like to be remembered?

He’d want to be remembered as someone who made a difference. I don’t think he felt appreciated for what he did for MD. He raised billions of dollars for kids with neuromuscular diseases.

Did other comics recognize his value?

My favorite quote was from Jim Carrey, who said in so many words after he heard about Jerry’s death, that there would be no Jim Carrey without Jerry Lewis.

Do you think he felt underestimated as a filmmaker?

In this country, yes. In France, no. There,

they compared him to Chaplin. “The Nutty Professor” was one of the biggest films of its time. He didn’t get credit until way after.

Why did he not get the credit due?

Slapstick may look silly, but he was meticulous in what he did. If you look at his sight gags in his movies, even the Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis movies, it was all very choreographed.

The MD Telethon was part of my childhood. That’s the first time I saw some of those amazing stars and performers, all there for Jerry and for the kids.

Jerry did the telethon between 1966 and 2010, and he raised something like $2.5 billion. He was the face of those MD children.

He loved those kids, stayed in touch with many of them.

St. Vincent will host the eighth annual cancer run/walk challenge at 8 a.m. Sept. 16 at Lions Park to benefit fundraiser St. Vincent’s cancer care programs and services such as art therapy and the mobile mammography unit for women.

“A lot of run events are more about people getting out there and they want to just run. This event is more about why you’re there and your connection to somebody who is suffering from cancer or who has passed,” said Jeff Graves, founder and president of Vision Event Management, the promoter of the cancer challenge.

Graves began collaborating with St. Vincent three years ago when the company reached out for help in organizing the challenge. He said it’s been a great partnership.

“There’s not a single person that doesn’t know somebody that’s been affected by cancer and the number of people, unfortunately, that we all know is growing,” he said. “So, these (events) are so important to help with that and really, really touch people’s hearts.”

The cancer challenge offers two distances to choose from this year, both of which will be timed. Tickets are $40 for the 3-mile option and $55 for the 6-mile option.

Those interested can sign up individually or join a team.

Participants can go to the St. Vincent House in Indianapolis, 2301 Dugan Dr., from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 15 for packet pick-up.

The Zionsville Lions Club Carnival will kick off with the VIP Carnival. It starts at 5 p.m. Sept. 8. The carnival gives families with members who have special needs a chance to experience the festival for free.

“We try to take away the financial burden. We try to take away the social obstacles and just make it a fun night,” said Leigh Ann Akard, Fall Fest VIP and entertainment chair.

The VIP Carnival is sponsored by the HAWK (Helping All With Kindness) Foundation, a nonprofit that organizes free events throughout the year for families with special needs members.

Akard said the carnival is geared toward the entire family. All members are invited, including caregivers and extended family.

“I think it probably means something different for the sibling,” Akard said. “It probably means something different for mom and dad, and definitely means something different for the VIP. But somehow, it all gets wrapped up into this nice package, and they’ve all had this wonderful experience.”

With some 25,000 visitors expected during the three-day Lions Club Fall Festival in Zionsville, hopes are high a silent auction will raise even more money than in previous years. Last year’s auction raised approximately $10,000.

“Our goal would be $15,000. However, we would be more than happy to collect over that amount,” said Michael Moran, vice president of the Lions Club.

Private and public donors and the business community have provided unique and popular items to spice up the auction. Last year, there were more than 200 items. Moran hopes for more this year.

“For our sports fans, we have a Pete Rose-signed jersey encased in a box frame — embroidered on the jersey are all his records — and a beautiful Daniel Wellington Classic Sheffield 36mm men’s watch donated by Robert Goodman,” Moran said.

“Because Zionsville is fast becoming known as a gourmet destination, we’re featuring several local dining gems on the site. Donors such as Noah Grant’s, The Friendly, Cobblestone and Moody’s provide

For the first hour, there will be activities in front of the gazebo, including games, information booths, face painting, bounce houses and more. Silly Safari will provide entertainment. Each family will receive a dinner ticket for sandwiches from Chick-filA, hot dogs from the Lions Club and cookies provided by the Boone County Sheriff’s Dept.

“Our whole goal is for the family together to create memories and enjoy the All-American tradition of going to the carnival,” Akard said.

“I was a flight attendant for 17 years, so I dealt with a lot of different personalities,” she said. “I have a dance background. I’ve learned from being around other pageants and also judging other pageants. You just learn more as you go along.”

The 2018 Miss Fall Festival Outstanding Teen competition will be held at 3 p.m.

Sept. 17 at the Whitestown Municipal Complex’s Town Hall. Admission is free. The winner advances to the 2018 Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen competition at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center in June 2018. The competition is for Boone County residents between the ages of 13 and 17. High school seniors are not eligible.

This is the second year the pageant will be held at Whitestown’s Town Hall. It was held for two years at Zionsville’s Town Hall.

“We moved it to have a better venue with better sound and air conditioning,” Giralte said of the move indoors in 2014. “It was difficult for the girls to change. It’s a better all-around venue than at the park. One year when we were doing the interview, there were gnats flying around, and the poor

girls were trying to answer questions and gnats stuck to their lip gloss. Sometimes it was just too hot.”

Giralte became involved through the Lions Club when the pageant was first introduced.

“The first year I judged and the second year I co-directed it with (former Zionsville Town Council member) Jeff Papa,” Giralte said. “I’ve been the director for five years.”

The categories are individual private interview, lifestyle and fitness and evening gown with on-stage questions and talent.

Andi Hagen, the reigning 2017 Fall Festival winner, will crown the pageant winner.

Painting event joins lineup

Sunday is typically a quiet day in the Fall Festival entertainment tent.

That’s something the Lions Club wants to change, so it has added unique painting events, complete with wine and snacks on the last day of the event.

Two options — a canvas painting of the Main Street clock and a wood painting of the state of Indiana — can be created Sept.

10 in the Entertainment Tent. All supplies, plus a glass of wine, are included.

The design of the clock painting, which will be taught from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., was created by artist Sarah Weder, owner of Paint and Party Indy, as something special for the Lions Club fundraising event.

“When I choose a painting, I want it to be friendly to someone who is a nonartist,” she said. Her art was inspired by Zionsville and the fall colors.

The second piece of art can be customized to read “Zionsville” or “Indiana.” The painting lesson for the rustic wood piece with an outline of the state will be from 3 to 5 p.m.

This year’s event features a variety of treats. One of last year’s hot-selling items will make a comeback, according to Tim Reinhart, Fall Festival chairman.

“One of the newest favorite items from last year’s fair was the gyros, and they will be back this year and are one of the newest foodstand items,” Reinhart said.

Egyptian Café will sell them at the festival.

Festival classic elephant ears also will be among the offerings. The fried, sweetened dough originally was created and prepared over a campfire, according to Buckskin Cookery, a cookbook on how to re-create 19th century Canadian frontier dishes, and were formally known as beaver tails. Now, the dough is deep-fried and served with a variety of toppings.

Lions Club members who practiced painting the items instructed by Weder to ensure the lessons would go smoothly. Akard said the artwork was appropriate for all skill levels.

“It’s not nearly as complicated as it looks,” she said.

The cost to paint each item is $40, with a portion going to Lions Park. Reservations must be made in advance online at paintandpartyindy.com.

Dream Car Show returns

Vendors offer variety

For the 16th year, rides from days gone by, muscle cars and today’s high-tech vehicles will be on display during the annual Lions Club Fall Fest Dream Car Show in Lions Park.

“We usually expect about 100 cars, and we can fit a little over that. They just come park on the grass,” said Doug Gauthier, who is organizing the event for the third year. “We get people from all over central Indiana bringing their cars out and showing them off. We have a lot of antique cars like a 1924 Model A that is totally restored and in beautiful shape to European cars, Cobras, and this year, we are expecting a Rolls Royce limousine.”

Adding to the ambiance, a DJ will play old-time rock and roll. Those strolling through the show will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite car with a People’s Choice Award presented to the top vote-getter. Trophies are awarded to the top 20 cars as determined by judges.

Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon, with the show running until 3 p.m. Each entrant receives a T-shirt and a metal dash plaque

More than 60 vendors will be at the Zionsville Fall Festival selling a variety of commercial and arts and crafts items.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 9 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 10.

Twenty commercial vendors will be inside the large tent, and many more will set up around it.

“A lot of the vendors have been there for years,” said Bonnie Kincaid, commercial vendor chair. “They do it year after year. A lot of it is repeat business.”

The arts and crafts vendors will be next to the entertainment tent adjacent to the commercial vendor area.

“Our arts and craft vendors are really artisans. They are hand-crafting items.

We have jewelry vendors, wood-workers, home decor and clothing,” Arts and Crafts Vendor chair Jill Reinhart said. “We’re looking for local talent to showcase what they do to our community. It’s an opportunity for the community to see what local artists are producing.”

“What usually happens if it is a nice day out people come out and sign up, because if it’s raining no one wants to take their car out in it. But it is a rain or shine event,” said Gauthier, who admits to being a “car guy” and will have a 1940 Buick on display that his father restored.

“Just come and look at the beauty of the vehicles that are there and how simple some of them are compared to cars nowadays,” Gauthier said. “They don’t make them like they did then.”

LeoPalooza offers safe party

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Alpha Leo Club will host the fifth annual LeoPalooza at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 in the gazebo at Lions Park. LeoPalooza provides young adults a drug- and alcohol-free environment for the night.

The Leo Club is the youth division of the Lions Club for ages 12 to 18. Tim Reinhart, Fall Festival chair, said the club teaches young members about the benefits of community service through service projects and visits to organizations.

“They try to do some unique things to expose the kids to what happens in our community,” Reinhart said.

“What other service people do or what police and fire do to serve their community and learn about service, really.”

He said LeoPalooza is a great recruiting draw for the club as well.

“We try to utilize that as a tool for them, since school just started, to bring in new members or expose their friends to the Leo Club and introduce

“We had all these kids in the park, and what could their parents do? So it kind of worked out that way,” Reinhart said.

The laid-back Lion’s Lounge will be open from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Sept. 9 during the Zionsville Fall Festival. The area is open to adults 21 and older and will include outdoor games, dancing, a raffle, live music and beer and wine.

Fall Festival and Lion’s Lounge co-chair Keith Shepherd described the Lion’s Lounge as an allaround relaxing good time for adults to enjoy.

The entertainment tent will offer wine and Sun King beer, including Cream Ale, Osiris and Wee Mac. The pirate-themed lounge will feature live music beginning at 7 p.m. performed by The Impalas. The Impalas have performed at the Lion’s

Lounge for the past two years and have become a crowd favorite. Shepherd described The Impalas as very crowd-interactive, vibrant and exciting. The Impalas typically have between six and 12 band members performing on a variety of instruments. Shepherd said The Impalas’ performance at the Lion’s Lounge has become a fun tradition for many Zionsville residents.

The Impalas cover popular hits by top 40 artists, including Journey, Bon Jovi, Naughty by Nature and Bob Seger.

“Come over, have a drink, listen to The Impalas and cut loose for a little bit,” Shepherd said.

There is a $6 cover to enter the Lion’s Lounge. Attendees can upgrade their entry fee to receive a souvenir mug.

The Kids Corner will offer fun activities and information for families during the Zionsville Fall Festival. Vendors will showcase their services to families while also providing activities for children.

“We have about 10 vendors who add value to the community. They’re handpicked,” Kids Corner chair Leeann Balta said. “While the vendors are sharing information with the families, they will offer hands-on activities for kids.”

Make a Joyful Noise will educate families about music education services and private lessons. Usborne Books and More will offer engaging selections for children of all ages.

“It’s really important to me to be able to offer these services that families may not otherwise know about, or their lives are so busy they have trouble sifting through information,” Balta said.

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Police Dept., Zionsville Fire Dept. and Boone County Sheriff’s Office will join forces for Public Safety Day with live demonstrations from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 9 during the Zionsville Fall Festival.

ZPD Sgt. Adrian Martin said Public Safety Day has become a mainstay of the Fall Festival, and he hopes the event becomes a family tradition.

The event is designed as an interactive and entertaining day for community members to connect with local law enforcement.

The agencies will host a Public Safety Zone that will feature “Touch-A-Truck.”

Agencies will be on-site throughout the day to answer safety inquiries, including questions about crime watch, fire safety and internet safety.

At 1 p.m., ZFD will host an equipment demonstration, which provides an upclose look at the equipment and highlight resources used by ZFD to fight fires and assist the community.

At 2 p.m., ZPD and the Boone County Sheriff’s Dept. will host a K-9 demonstration. Special guest and local hero K-9 Jelka will make her official return to the department. Martin said this will be the ZPD and Jelka’s first opportunity to say thank you to the community for prayers and support

Pet Pavilion and Safety Zone Coordinator Mike Heffner said festivalgoers can expect pet-themed vendors, services, performances, demonstrations and a lot more.

“There will be a variety of pet-related vendors in Pet Pavilion, including veterinary services, pet food and treats, boarding services and pet clothing,” Heffner said.

“Also, the Humane Society for Boone County always comes with adoptable pets for our guests to check out.”

Visitors can even adopt a new family member.

“We always have a few new vendors, but the biggest news this year is the Lions Leader Dog booth will include Puppy Raisers,” Heffner said. “They will bring puppies with them and give a short demonstration on their training to be a Leader Dog for the blind.”

Silly Safaris will be back this year with a variety of animals to exhibit at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Sept. 10.

“It’s entertainment but also education where they talk a lot about different kinds of animals, and they bring animals to show them off to the kids,” Heffner said.

Pets are always welcome in the Pet Pavilion, but because of the large number of people in the park for the festival, pets are discouraged in the main park unless they are service animals.

Despite the considerable decline, these figures indicate Indiana home building is still up 12 percent for the first seven months of this year.

Commentary by George Klein Consistently providing great service was the foundation that made my businesses successful. Conservice tinuous communication and training ensured all employees deeply understand our customer service culture. I believe that all customer feedback is good, including feedback about problems. That is valuable information we can use to improve. In fact, a problem handled quickly and effectively often results in a more loyal customer.

So, it amazes me when I interact with businesses that don’t seem to care or want to hear from customers. I had a bad experience with an upscale restaurant and sent in a web form about the situation. A month later, they haven’t responded to me. I know they received my web form because I immediately started to get marketing emails from them! A timely response would have had more impact.

Customer service is changing but it isn’t going away. Businesses can’t ignore customers. Half of customers give a business only one week to respond before they stop doing business with them, and

89 percent begin doing business with a competitor following a poor customer experience.

So, I‘m left wondering why this restaurant, as well as other businesses, don’t respond to customers. Here are four of the top reasons I think businesses don’t respond.

They don’t care Businesses are willing to let bad service go unaddressed. They view problems as a part of doing business. Things do happen, but customers deserve and want a response and an apology when things go wrong. Sixty-eight percent of customers expect higher levels of service than they did one year ago. Individual situations should be handled, but more importantly, businesses should look at feedback over time to identify trends and patterns to drive change.

They don’t like to be criticized Businesses become defensive when customers criticize them. Most customers complain because they care about the business. They are giving the business valuable information and a chance to improve. View complaints as opportunities!

We’ve found that if you give customers

an easy and convenient channel to share feedback, they will share all kinds of feedback, including compliments!

Employees are afraid to share feedback Every business has service failures.

Employees are deeply involved with customers and have lots of valuable information about the customer experience. They should feel safe sharing that feedback, and they should never be punished for bringing a problem to the attention of management.

They don’t have the manpower Businesses should offer multiple channels customers can use to contact them and should staff appropriately to respond to all channels. Research has found that customers expect a response within 24 hours, and the faster the response time, the more likely customers will be satisfied. Even if there is a problem, a prompt response de-escalates the situation and increases customer satisfaction.

The Kosene brothers, Indianapolis natives, started Mimi Blue Meatballs as a tribute to their mother, Mildred (Mimi) Bluestein Kosene. The brothers have brought the wonders of their mother’s home-cooked meals to the Hamilton County table, with the upscale twist that you’d expect from the recipe book of a classic, debonair housewife. The Kosene brothers describe their mother as a lady endowed with manners, taste and an easy social grace.

The atmosphere of Mimi Blue Meatballs exudes that same easy social grace and charm. I fell in love with the backstory of the restaurant, and when I arrived, I fell in love with the food. My brunch ladies, Nikki Byrum and her daughter, Ava, adored it, too. We ordered everything from the brunch menu and also tried a few meatballs.

The brunch menu features pancake balls (lemon thyme pancakes with Vermont organic maple syrup), eggs gerry (two poached eggs on an English muffin with classic meatballs, hollandaise and melted cheddar), French toast and biscuits and gravy.

Get it at Four Day Ray, Fishers Ingredients: 2 oz. Milagro Silver, 1 oz. Cointreau, 2 oz. orange Juice, 1 full lime squeezed, 1 oz. simple syrup, 1 oz. of muddled roasted jalapenos with seeds Directions: Muddle the roasted jalapenos, tequila and Cointreau in the bottom of a mixing tin. Add ice and the rest of the ingredients and shake very well. Pour contents of shaker into a slat-rimmed tulip glass and serve with a lime wedge.

Add olives and/or grapes if you like, then mix-in mayo to your liking.

“It seems like people use who and that interchangeably. When I hear people say, ‘You know Bill...he’s grammar guy the guy that lives down the street,’ it makes my ears cry. What’s the rule on who vs. that? ” -Aaron, Noblesville I could spend a whole month on who.

Who or whom. Who’s vs. whose. Who’s on first? Who let the dogs out? Who’s the boss? From my best research, I’ve concluded who is either the name of a band who likes to sing about pinball or the guy who plays first base.

Just kidding. As a general rule, use who when you’re referring to a person, and that when you’re referring to an object. Case closed.

I wish it were that easy. However, according to style guides, including “Chicago Manual of Style” and “Merriam-Webster Dictionary of English Usage,” who and that can indeed be used interchangeably. Additionally, authors like Shakespeare, Chaucer and books like the “King James Bible” often utilized that to refer to a person. I’m not about to argue with the Bible.

Since I’m not going to pick a fight with Bill Shakespeare and Geoff Chaucer, I’ll let the “Oxford English Dictionary” do it for me. According to Oxford, you should always use who when referring to people and that when referring to an object. As an ever-evolving language, you can either be frustrated that English is often a matter of opinion, or you can geek out on it like yours truly. To me, in 21st century English usage, who vs. that is a matter of dignity.

A monument of tolerance

Commentary by Don Knebel

Rabat, situated along the Atlantic Ocean, is the capital of Morocco. Its most visited site honors a king who protravel tected Morocco’s Jews during the Holocaust.

In 1927, the French, who gained control of Morocco in 1912, designated 18-year-old Sidi Mohammed ben Yusef as Morocco’s sultan, or ruler. In 1940, the pro-Nazi regime of Vichy France ordered the sultan, a direct descendant of Muhammad, to impose severe restrictions on Morocco’s 250,000 Jews, who had lived in Morocco for centuries.

Insisting that his title as Commander of the Faithful required that he treat all Moroccans equally, he refused. When Allied forces liberated Morocco in 1942, its Jewish community remained unharmed, with Jews still working in the sultan’s government. Sultan Muhammad, grateful for Morocco’s liberation, hosted the historic Allied conference in Casablanca in 1943.

When Morocco gained its independence in 1957, Sultan Muhammad became King Muhammad V. After he died suddenly in

1961, 75,000 Jews were among the public mourners. In 1962, King Muhammad’s son, King Hassan II, began construction of a mausoleum for his father near the river Bou Regreg. The mausoleum, completed in 1971, is a magnificent example of classic Moroccan architecture, with a gleaming white exterior and a green tile roof. Interior walls are covered with mosaics, and the carved ceiling is covered in gold leaf. The mausoleum now includes the white onyx tombs of King Hassan II and his brother, along with that of Muhammad V, located in the center. Visitors of all religions are allowed inside the mausoleum, which also serves as a mosque, where they can also observe a traditionally dressed man sitting in the corner, reading from the Quran.

Rabat’s mausoleum is not only a monument to a king, it is a monument to tolerance and respect.
