Little League pursues headquarters in Whitestown

During its annual Aug. 24 meeting, the Little League International Board of Directors approved an ofDEVELOPMENT fer from Whitestown to relocate its Central Region Headquarters. The development will move forward pending the completion of a formal agreement.

“After a thorough evaluation of local communities within the Central Region, the Little League International Board of Directors are pleased that this opportunity involving Whitestown was presented to us and we are looking forward to seeing what the community has to offer,” Little League International Board of Directors Chairman Hugh E. Tanner said. “This opportunity takes us one step closer to finding a home for our Central Region Headquarters and we are excited to see how the Whitestown community can support Little Leaguers throughout the region.”

The headquarters initially was planned

for a 15 acres at 8602 E. County Rd. 500 S in Zionsville, along with a 78-home subdivision to be developed by Pulte Homes. For several months leading up to finalizing development plans, remonstrators expressed concerns about the attached subdivision.

A group of Zionsville residents launched a petition in early June. Shortly after the petition gained supporters, Little League announced it would look elsewhere for its headquarters.

During Zionsville’s June 19 Plan Commission meeting, Matt Price, a Zionsville-based attorney, spoke on behalf of Little League International and Pulte Homes, notifying the town that Little League would not move forward with plans for the headquarters. At a July 10 Zionsville Board of Zoning Appeals meeting, Price withdrew a filing with the board for several zoning variances that would have been a vital step for the Pulte development.

Little League International plans to work with Whitestown officials and community members to reach an agreement and develop the recently approved space.

The connector links CR 400 South and CR 650 East. The project is the culmination of decades of planning, close to three years of design, and close to two years of construction.

According to Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown, this was a true countywide effort. The new road is regionally significant because it provides a direct connection from I-69 to I-65 on the north side of Indianapolis. The road cost more than $6 million, with $4.6 million coming from federal funds. It was built with future growth in mind, so two additional lanes could be added to make it a four-lane divided roadway. There is extra right-of-way room to add multi-purpose side paths in the future. The Town of Whitestown asks that drivers watch for bicyclists and pedestrians at the Big 4 Trail crossing. The speed limit is 40 mph along the new road. A traffic study will be done soon to determine if stoplights are warranted at the intersection of Main Street and Albert S. White Drive.

Brooks, others talk school safety

Brooks addressed during a School Safety Listening Session Aug. 24 at Noblesville City Hall. The event attracted school and public safety officials from Noblesville, Westfield, Carmel, Sheridan, Zionsville, Hamilton Heights, Alexandria and other Brooks local communities.

The session was a follow-up to an April 9 listening session. Brooks said the Aug. 24 session drew approximately double the attendees of the April event, which she attributed in large part to the enhanced focus on school safety following the May 25 shooting at Noblesville West Middle School that injured two, teacher Jason Seaman and student Ella Whistler.

Roundtable topics included the importance of informing parents on when and which drills are practiced in the schools so they can follow up with their children.

“A lot of us (parents) grew up with fire drills and so forth, but the active-shooter drills which have been going on for quite some time now, many parents didn’t go through that and don’t understand it,” Brooks said.

Westfield Washington Schools Director of HR and Safety Chris Baldwin spoke on how WWS keeps parents informed.

“We just made it a point. Our plan is after every single drill we do now, that we are going to communicate to the parents at home, that this drill occurred and here are the major aspects we covered in that drill and ask that they review that with their children at home,” Baldwin said.

Niedermeyer spoke on the importance of internal and external communication within a school during a crisis situation.

“The most important thing is getting information out as fast as you can,” she said. “On May 25, we sent out 13 communications to our parents, but it still wasn’t fast enough.

Because of social media, everyone with a cellphone was able to get information out quickly.

In terms of looking at our entire communication systems and making sure everything is interfaced with all of our communication standpoints so when an event happens, a teacher can immediately push one button and contact goes out to the office, to the police, to first responders, so everyone has that systemic information all at one time.”

Home tour includes Zionsville residence

By Maria Cook news@currentzionsville.com The Indiana Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Indianapolis will host its yearly Architects’ Home ARCHITECTURE Tour Sept. 15 and 16.

The tour features six homes in and around Indianapolis, including one in Zionsville. The homes feature unique and varied architectural styles.

The Zionsville residence at 485 W Cedar St. was designed by Rottmann Collier Architects.

According to the AIA, the home is an example of how a new home can fit within a historic area yet still accomodate a modern lifestyle.

Jason Shelley, executive director of the AIA’s Indiana Chapter, said the self-guided tour is a fun way for Hoosiers to learn about different styles of architecture Shelley and become inspired.

“The architects of the homes and usually the homeowners are there as well, so when people go on these tours, they get to ask a lot of questions,” Shelley said. “There are different sizes and styles of homes on the tour.

7 through Sept. 14 at CV Art and ART Frame in Zionsville.

Max’s paintings return to the gallery, 110 S. Main St., after a popular exhibit was displayed there in 2016. “(It was) the most successful show we’ve ever had, by far,” said Barbara Jennings, owner of CV Art and Frame.

Among the pieces will be a painted Indianapolis Colts helmet. A similar piece sold before the exhibit was publicly displayed last time.

The company that manages Max’s art requested the return of his work to Zionsville after the success of his previous exhibit.

Max attended the 2016 show but can’t attend this year because of health reasons.

Jennings said there are special incentives and bonuses for collectors who purchase a significant amount of art.

Max’s art will be uncrated Sept. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by special receptions Sept. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sept. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. Both events require reservations which can be made by contacting the gallery.

Max rose to fame in the 1960s alongside contemporaries Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. He is known for his psychedelic and counterculture art.

In 2016, Max supplied art inspired by Zionsville and Indianapolis settings, which Jennings expects will be included in the 2018 collection as well.

Jennings appreciates the color and vibrancy in Max’s work.

$15K granted to restore cemetery

Reece Thompson, a Western Boone High School graduate, was recently awarded a $15,000 grant by the Indiana HISTORY Historical Society to continue his work on the 19th-century cemetery known as the Thorntown Colored Cemetery. Thompson began restoring the African American cemetery last year as part of his Eagle Scout project.

According to Thorntown historian and Quaker minister Larry Truitt, the cemetery has historical significance because many African Americans migrated to Thorntown to start a new life when freed from slavery.

The Quaker community in Thorntown was noted nationwide for its interest in the welfare of African Americans, Truitt said.

After completing his project, Thompson, an IUPUI freshman, received offers of assistance from people in the community.

“Groups of people with a lot of concern for the cemetery approached me wanting to help,” Thompson said. “So, I formed the Colored Cemetery Committee with the help of my father. We have the Boone County historian, a local teacher who knows a lot about

the cemetery, a trustee and the Thorntown librarian.”

The IHS awarded $15,000 to Sugar Creek Historical Society for Thompson’s project.

“With the funds, the committee agreed to get a survey for the cemetery to get the exact property lines to see how much farmers have encroached in years past,” Thompson said. “We’ll also be able to put a metal fence around the perimeter of the cemetery and to get an Indiana historical marker.”

Thompson is hoping the public will help in the form of donations for the $1,200 needed to complete his work.

May’s books profile central Indiana veterans from World War II. The first volume focuses on veterans from Morgan County, where he lived at the time. The second volume profiles people from Hoosier Village, where May is a chaplain.

During his 7 p.m., Oct. 16 program, some of the local veterans May has profiled will be in attendance to share their stories that encapsulate more than just the war.

In Dr. Arun Jain’s view, the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana’s inaugural Summer Games was a tremenHINDU TEMPLE dous success.

“We initially wanted 16 teams for the men’s volleyball tournament, and within five days we were full,” said Jain, a Carmel resident who serves on the temple’s board of trustees.

Jain said 10 other teams wanted to sign up but the tournament was full.

Six women’s teams played a throwball tournament, a popular game in India where participants catch and throw the ball over a net, a little lower than a volleyball net, rather than hit it. Jain said there were approximately 200 participants and another 300 spectators Aug. 18-19 at the Indianapolis temple, 3350 N. German Church Rd. Jain said the Summer Games allowed the temple to connect with members at a different level.

Jain, who estimates more than 25 percent of the temple members are from Carmel, said the temple is considering building permanent courts for volleyball and throwball.

Carmel High School sophomore Rishma Chauhan played on a throwball team and helped coordinate the event.

“The other youth volunteers were very helpful, so it made it easy for me,” she said. “I had never played throwball before the tournament. Many players on the team I was on were champions on their high school teams (in India as youth), so I got good coaching and picked up the game quickly.”

The allure of Florence, Ala. Commentary by Ward Degler You’ve probably never heard of Florence, Ala.. Neither had I until my granddaughter announced she would be getting married there in September.

PLAIN TALK A glance at the map shows Florence in the northwest corner of Alabama, just south of the Tennessee state line. Population is around 39,000.

The town is one of four – known locally as the Quad - nestled next to Wilson Lake and the Tennessee River. Tuscumbia is one, and Sheffield another. But the most famous of the four towns is Muscle Shoals, known for its music-recording studios and the long list of stars whose records and careers were born there. Not the least of these, of course, was Elvis Presley.

Blues legend W.C. Handy came from Florence, and the town holds a music festival every summer in his name.

Fran McKee, the first woman to rise to the rank of admiral in the U.S. Navy, grew up in Florence. Dred Scott, the famous slave who fought for his freedom all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, worked at an inn in Florence.

Every September, the Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride ends in Florence and Muscle Shoals. The ride commemorates events in 1838 when the Cherokee Nation was forcibly relocated from the area to Oklahoma.

Florence also is the place where Frank Lloyd Wright built the legendary Rosenbaum House. The home, now open for public tours, is one of Wright’s Usonian-style homes, and the only Wright home in Alabama.

My granddaughter, Victoria Plummer, whose bedroom during high school was literally crammed with music trophies, followed her melodious voice out to California a few years ago to build a musical career as Victoria Renee. Next month, she will marry Linc Hand, a warm and friendly young man who has acted in numerous movies, including “42” and “Painted Horses,” as well as a long list of TV shows, including “Ghosted” and “Revenge.”

My wife and I will be there to wish the young couple well, and to soak up as much of Florence as possible.

TEAM EXERCISE HAS MANY BENEFITS Soccer program’s goal is to be inclusive

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com On Sunday evenings, most athletes leave the soccer fields after a full day of games.

But that’s when the players in the TOPSoccer program take the COVER STORY field.

TOPSoccer is a community-based adaptive program, designed to meet the needs of children and young adults who have physical or intellectual disabilities. It is geared toward development rather than competition.

Through cheers, encouragement and giggles, seven TOPSoccer athletes perform drills and kick goals alongside coaches and peer assistants.

It’s the first year for TOPSoccer in Zionsville. The program’s acronym stands for The Outreach Program for Soccer. It is funded locally by the Zionsville Youth Soccer Association and is one of 11 programs in Indiana, open to any players with disabilities.

Zionsville resident Lesley Kay is grateful for the opportunity for her 11-year-old son, Drew Kay, who participated in TOPSoccer at Butler University several years ago. The distance proved to be too challenging to continue the program. When it launched locally this summer, Drew was one of the first to join the pilot program.

“He likes the idea of having his own sport he can play now,” said Kay, adding that it gives her son a feeling of accomplishment.

“It’s all about having fun.”

“Soccer’s not the main event,” said Andrea Caniff, one of the TOPSoccer ZYSA coaches. “If they’re having fun (and) it evolves into something else, that’s fine, too.

It’s very go-with-the-flow.”

Players who want to run around the field or take breaks from the activity are welcome to do so.

“It gives them freedom that they don’t usually have,” said Kay said, noting she believes it also frees them from the selfconsciousness that can come from unwelcome onlookers.

cal disability can participate in the national program. Drills and exercises are adapted so that anyone, including those in wheelchairs or on crutches, can participate.

“If you feel like (your kid) hasn’t been able to have an opportunity (to play sports), this is a place where that can happen,” Caniff said.

The program is a part of US Youth Soccer and is led by volunteers at the local level.

Practices at ZYSA begin with players sitting in a circle, connecting through conversation, followed by dribbling and goals drills. Practice typically concludes with a scrimmage. Drills mirror games such as Duck, Duck, Goose and Red Light, Green Light. If more athletes join the program, Caniff said matches can be organized, something some of the players are eager to do.

Caniff has a background working with adults and children with disabilities. Caniff and Sandy Kimpel lead the local program and initiated a four-week pilot this summer with four athletes. That gave them some

idea of how to organize the exercises and which warm-ups to plan before the sixweek session in the fall. “(Being on a team) is the kind of thing that every kid should have a chance to (do),” Caniff said.

Caniff said most of the kids in the TOPSoccer program have never participated in organized sports. Her goal is to assign each athlete a “buddy,” a volunteer age 14 or older, willing to provide assistance to the athletes. Volunteers ensure safety, help communicate instructions and provide stability during practice.

Caniff is still searching for more volunteers on Sunday evenings. Soccer skills aren’t required to volunteer.

Caniff coaches the athletes and provides guidance to the volunteers, reminding them to explore different ways to communicate and understand the needs of others.

“The fact that we’re all there together, the buddy never has to feel they’re on their own with one (athlete),” she said. “There’s a lot of different ways to encourage them.”

“They’re teaching each other,” said Kay, adding that volunteer buddies learn as much as the athletes but in different ways.

One of the volunteers, Connor Caniff, said working with the athletes helps him work better with people overall.

“It gives you a different perspective,” Connor said.

The six-week program runs one hour each week and continues through September. It will resume in the spring unless an indoor practice facility can be acquired to add a winter session.

Among scores of both legitimate and suspect lines, we divide ourselves by race, gender, religion and age. Even more, we are segregated by others — marketing firms, corporations, institutions, politicians and governments — masterful in making us aware, if not obsessed with, our various forms and flavors. So, as we march into a new dawn of interest groups and identity politics, where is the guidebook that will help us know the difference between a sparrow and a swallow?

Alas, the notion of human variability is a bit more contested. Lines blur and various constituencies are locked in battle as to which can claim each of the contested subgroups as their own. Labels fly. Aspersions are cast. Still, most of us struggle to rise above the chatter hoping to make sense of it all.

Our children stay children much longer than in generations past. Still, they behave more like adults. Working, or not, fails to correspond with possessions. Maturity, or not, fails to correspond with procreation.

Intelligence and diligence, or not, fail to correspond with expectation. Have we lost sight of what it means to be an adult? Or, is the onset simply delayed a bit? Yet, even if we can attempt an answer here, do we expect to cherry pick the good and leave behind the bad?

The young (or youngish) are not to blame alone. Verified chronological adults abandon their families to “find themselves.” And maturity only loosely corresponds to age.

Without the onset of responsibility, can adulthood ever be achieved? Perhaps, we’ll know when we’re older.

As you may recall from last week’s column, my dance mom days are over, or at least on pause. My youngest decided to take a break from competitive HUMOR dance and has left me without an expensive, all-consuming role to fill. I still have another daughter in color guard, but she can drive and so can her friends, reducing me to the occasional French-braider or post-practice DQ financier.

Therefore, since work, four teenagers, a bald husband, a perpetually messy kitchen, the dog and the cat are clearly not enough to keep me busy, I am pledging my newly acquired free time to fantasy football domination. That’s right, men of Midnight Madness, you are officially on notice!

This will be my fourth season as the sole woman in an all-male league. My “Game of Thrones” shout-out team, “The Girl Has No Name,” has slowly but surely been rising in the ranks and is poised to break into the top four come playoffs. And now that I can completely devote my substantial and uniquely maternal skills to each weekly matchup, I’m confident I will reign supreme.

I am, after all, a veteran dance mom. I can easily pinpoint true competition amid a multitude of posers, discern between real injuries and carefully crafted drama, and recognize when the best course of action is simply to walk away from the emotional child in the dressing room. Translation? I know whom to start, whom to bench, and whom to trade (and when to use whom versus who!).

Rest assured, I will keep you posted. My fantasy football travails may not be dance theater, but they should prove entertaining.

Education policy should be local Commentary by Donald Rainwater

During the past few years in Indiana, our state’s government has taken several steps toward increasing its OPINION role in controlling the education of our children while significantly diminishing the parental role in education.

Within the past two years, the Indiana General Assembly has passed legislation to convert the Indiana Supt. of Public Instruction from an elected office, which it had been for more than 100 years, to an appointed office. By doing so, the legislature revoked your right to vote for a duly elected official, implying that the governor is more qualified to determine who makes education policy in Indiana than voters are.

Last year, the General Assembly dissolved the duly elected school boards in Gary and Muncie, giving control to government appointees. Again, lawmakers disenfranchised voters in those cities.

Yes, both of those school districts were having financial issues. However, I believe these issues were allowed to grow in severity because parents have been conditioned to defer to government to hold schools accountable. As a society, we

have accepted the idea that government dictates education funding and policy and tells us how to educate and parent our children.

Duly elected school boards and school district administrations should be determining local education policy, in conjunction with actively engaged parent-teacher organizations, not federal or state government. If all politics is local, then all education policy should be local, too. The legislation that converted the Indiana Supt. of Public Instruction to a political appointee should be repealed. The school boards in Gary and Muncie should be reinstated.

As Hoosiers, we should all be concerned about a state government which seems to be intent on growing more powerful and controlling our daily lives, especially as it relates to the education of our children. It isn’t government’s job to hold us accountable. It is our responsibility, as citizens and voters, to hold government accountable.

Mary Ellen was sure we’d never use the coupons, or they’d be for the wrong day, or they’d be expired. I bought a copy, anyway.

In June, I told Mary Ellen that over the summer we are going to go to every place in this book, all 569 of them. Think of the money we’ll save! Think of the fun we’ll have! It will be like a second honeymoon, only this time we’ll get two, one-topping pizzas for the price of one.

I laid out our cost-saving itinerary. My wife was not impressed.

“Dinner at DQ is OK, but do we have to play a game of Laser Tag the same night?” she said.

“First of all, it’s not one game, it’s two,” I said. “It’s the second game that’s free.”

Mary Ellen had a point. The last couple of months have been exhausting. Morgan’s River Rentals in Brookville may have been an especially bad choice. To get the discount, we had to rent two boats. We would

have been less tired if we were in the same canoe.

We were like kids the first week: trampolining, wall climbing and go-karting for half price. Mary Ellen swung at 100 mph fastballs, which got us two free rounds of Putt-Putt, which we hated-hated.

We had lots of dining choices – more than 150 restaurants to choose from, 100 of which were pizza. About 25 of those had gone out of business already.

We went to the Muncie Children’s Museum and the Basketball Hall of Fame Museum (buy one admission, get one free) and the aquarium in Newport, Ky., which includes a free kids’ ticket if you buy an adult ticket.

But we forgot to bring a kid. The Burger Kings in that town made it a worthwhile trip. There are still two free Whoppers in my glove compartment.

Overall, we’ve had a great summer. We saved about $1,200. And it only cost us $4,000.

For many, attending a carnival is fun and easy to do. But for kids with disabilities, it’s a little more compliPROJECT GOOD cated. The logistics of accomodating wheelchairs and other equipment can be daunting, and the mere idea of facing crowds can be intimidating.

That’s where the VIP Carnival comes in.

On Sept. 7, the Zionsville Lions Club will work to make the carnival and festivities a stress-free environment for those with physical or mental disabilities and their families and caregivers.

For more than a decade, the Zionsville Lions Club and its volunteers have devoted the Friday night before the main carnival for these families. HAWK (Helping All With Kindness) Foundation, a nonprofit that organizes free events throughout the year for families with members who have disabilities, assists the Lions Club in this special programming.

Though the carnival is still open to the public, the VIP families enter for free and special attention is paid to accessibility for all.

A big supporter for the event is Best Buddies, a group of high school students who befriend the VIP members and help them

Pageant to showcase local talent

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@currentzionsville.com Reigning Fall Festival Miss Outstanding Teen 2018 Claire Nieshalla will cap her year by handing off her ENTERTAINMENT crown to the next winner of the Miss Fall Festival’s Miss Outstanding Teen Pageant. The pageant will be held on Sunday Sept. 16 at the Whitestown Municipal Building at 3 p.m.

The event is organized by the Zionsville Lions Club and free for anyone to attend.

The winner of the pageant will ride in the Fall Festival parade the following year.

Zionsville Lions Club member Louanne Giralte has been in charge of the pageant since 2012, its second year. The pageant is now in its eighth year.

“We always do it the week after Fall Festival, so it doesn’t conflict with the festival.

More lions members are available to help,” Giralte said.

The event is free to the public, and there is no entry fee for contestants. Lions Club awards the winner a $500 scholarship from the Zionsville Lions club and goes on to compete in the Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen Scholarship Program in June 2019. The Miss Indiana Pageant has been held at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center for over 10 years.

“The idea came from (Lions member) Leigh Ann Akard,” Giralte said. “The Lions have always had an affiliation with Miss Indiana.

We’ve always ushered for them and given them a dinner the weekend they come into town.

Akard had the idea approved through the town of Zionsville and the Miss Fall Festival’s Miss Outstanding Teen Pageant was born.

The first Lions Club member in charge of the pageant was Jeff Papa, who was also Zionsville’s first mayor. Papa asked Giralte to judge. The next year, she was running the show.

“This year, (Papa) is going to be judging and I’m the director, so it has come full circle,” Giralte said.

At the time of publication, Giralte had six contestants signed up but was open to more applicants. She said she averages six to eight contestants per year. Each year

there are five judges, one of whom is a novice. The person who is brand new is taught what to look for that day.

Giralte is in the throes of finalizing the event.

“It’s kind of like putting a wedding together,” she said. “I wear many hats. Many hours go into this.”

Planning a pageant requires a venue, sound person, programs, flowers, a crown and sash, an emcee, gifts for the judges and auditors, and people to fill in for entertainment in between the areas of competition.

“Usually (the entertainment) involves Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen,” Giralte said.

The Lions Club members help Giralte in many ways, like putting down a dance floor and getting food for the judges.

Claire Nieshalla, who was last year’s Fall Festival Pageant winner, won second runner up at Miss Indiana and will be passing on her Miss Fall Festival crown to the next Fall Festival Miss Outstanding Teen 2019.

This year’s Fall Festival Parade is expected to showcase more than 90 floats representing the entire ENTERTAINMENT community.

“It’s a small-town America event,” said George Tikijian, parade chairman for the Lion’s Club.

Tikijian estimates that he’s been running the parade for 22 years and believes it’s a way he can give back to the community.

“You can do little things for people one at a time or you could do one big thing that hopefully makes a lot of people happy for a couple of hours,” he said.

The festival theme “Be a Superhero” is determined by the Fall Festival committee, but Tikijian said his perspective is sometimes a bit different than other committee members.

“My drive is that the theme be something that’s fun to make floats,” he said. “I don’t

hesitate to put my two cents in.”

Besides collecting entry forms and fees, he also is tasked with creating the lineup for the parade to ensure a flow that keeps the event interesting.

The Sept. 8 parade begins at Zionsville Community High School at 10 a.m. and winds down Mulberry Street to Ash Street, then turns onto Main Street where it ends near the Hawthorne Street intersection.

Prior to the start, a committee reviews each float and awards three top prizes: Best Theme, Parade Chairman’s Choice and President’s Choice. Banners are awarded to the winning floats that they can display on the parade route.

In previous years, more than 100 floats have been entered. But recently, the figure has been closer to 90.

“It’s great for the kids. They have a lot of fun watching, and the kids who participate have a lot of fun being in a parade,” Tikijian said. “I really think our parade is a neat thing to have.”

meet A real-life superhero

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@currentzionsville.com When Sophie Quick heard the theme for the upcoming Zionsville Fall Festival, “Be a Superhero,” she thought INSPIRATION of her personal superhero, Auschwitz survivor Eva Kor. Kor was subjected to human experimentation at an Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II and received international attention in 2017 when she publicly forgave the Nazis for the horrific events they put her through.

Quick, a Zionsville ComKor munity High School student and member of Girls Scout Troop 04487, is earning her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts, by bringing Kor to speak in Zionsville Sept. 26.

The Gold Award challenges Girl Scouts to use their vision for change and to make the world a better place, locally or globally.

“Recent local events have shown that violence is not just widespread but can be centered close to home. I wanted to bring (Eva) here to spread her message,” Quick

said. “She makes the world a better place.

She spreads her message of hope, healing and humanity throughout the country and the world.”

Kor, 84, travels the world giving speeches. On Sept. 26, she will speak at the ZCHS Performing Arts Center. ZCHS students and seventh- and eighth-grade students will gather to hear the talk.

Later that evening, she will speak at Zionsville United Methodist Church.

To promote the event, Quick will distribute cards during the Fall Festival Parade. The cards have information about the event on one side and Kor’s bio on the other.

“I’ll be walking in the parade with the Girls Scouts, handing (the cards) out. Then I will walk around the Fall Festival handing them out there,” Quick said.

Quick is confident Kor’s message will positively impact the community, and it just happens to fit with the Fall Festival’s superhero theme.

“Eva is a real superhero. She’s done so many great things,” Quick said.

For some Zionsville residents, the annual event marks the start of fall and the beginning of a new school year. The sight of tents rising and workers putting together rides in the large fields at Lions Park can only mean one thing - Fall Festival will be here soon.

Annie, Lizzie, Billy and Thomas Busse have grown up in Zionsville and attended the Fall Festival since they were small children. The siblings are 15-yearold triplets. Thomas, their younger brother, is 13.

They each have different ride preferences and look forward to the return of their favorite rides each year.

The Zipper features strong vertical G-forces, numerous spins and a sense of unpredictability. It was invented by Joseph Brown at Chance Rides in 1968.

Lions Lounge returns to fall festival, features the Impalas

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Lions Lounge will once again be open to adults ages 21 and older from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Sept. 8 at Lions ENTERTAINMENT Park during the 2018 Fall Festival.

The lounge is the biggest tent in the park, directly east of the clubhouse by Field 1.

Lions Park is privately owned and operated by the Zionsville Lions Club, and the entire fall festival is staffed by Lions Club volunteers. Fall Festival co-chair Keith Shepherd said the event is the Zionsville Lions Club’s largest fundraiser of the year.

“It’s a good cause. It’s a privately owned park and we open it up to the public and maintain everything ourselves,” Shepherd said. “A lot of people don’t know that. They think it’s funded by the government and it’s not. All funds go back into the club to help

maintain and update the park.”

Sun King will sell beer and limited wine offerings within the Lions Lounge, and food vendors will be on-site. The Impalas will perform live music. Admission to the Lions Lounge is $5. Although kids can’t enter the tent, they can participate in other festival events nearby while their parents enjoy the entertainment inside.

“It’s a really good time,” Shepherd said.

“People come out and have a blast and just cut loose for a little bit. It really works out nice because (the kids) are close and on the premises while (the Lions Lounge) is happening.”

A dance floor and a raffle at intermission will be available inside the tent. Shepherd said attendance largely depends on weather, which is why the club doesn’t set a firm fundraising goal.

‘Something for everyone’ at auction

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com More than 125 items are up for bid at the annual Sept. 8 Fall Festival Auction, ranging from Oakley sunglasses FUNDRAISER to Star Wars memorabilia to wine. Items are still being added, and the total might reach 250 before the event takes place at Lions Park.

“A lot come in at the last minute,” said Lions Club member Michael Moran, who is helping direct the auction. “There’s something out there for everyone.”

Bidding has already begun through the auction website Qtego, a technology-based auctioneer. Items are available at a variety of price points. All proceeds benefit the Lion’s Club.

To register to bid for silent auction items, text LIONS to 79230. Anytime an item is outbid, a text alert is sent. Qtego staff will be at the Fall Festival to assist with registration as needed. Bids can be placed through the website at qtego.net/qlink/zlc.php or through the Qtego app.

The Lions Club has used Qtego for the past five years, allowing Lions Club volun-

teers to focus on other areas of the festival.

“I wanted to make things as simple as I could,” Moran said. “It seems comfortable for us. We know the setup.”

The Fall Festival auction began in the early 2000s, transitioning from a flea market in the 1990s and an antique sale prior to that.

More than $10,000 in net revenue has been raised each year through the auction.

“If we could somehow make it up to $15,000, that would be delightful,” Moran said.

Local businesses, such as Body Outfitters, Fanimation and Akard’s True Value, have donated items. Bidders also will have a chance to bid on Lion’s Park services. Rental of the park’s gazebo, clubhouse and shelter house are up for bid. Sports memorabilia, including an autographed Cubs jersey and items signed by Pacers and Colts players, also are available.

Items can be viewed in the Lion’s Park Shelter starting at 2 p.m. Sept. 8. Bidding closes at 6 p.m. the same day. Payment for winning bids are made automatically through Qtego. Items can be retrieved at the shelter house Sept. 9 between 1 and 3 p.m. or at Carpenter Realty the following week.

Connor Prairie features ‘Black Pioneers’

Dancing with Our Stars to raise money for Meals on Wheels at Hamilton County

“I am both looking forward and nervous for FUNDRAISER it,” Booth said. “I absolutely love to dance but I know once I am out there with all the eyes watching, my adrenaline and nerves will kick in. I tend to put high expectations on myself and want so badly to do well that it overpowers my ability to relax and have fun. I want to have the mindset of just have fun with it and enjoy the experience and learn from it.”

Booth will participate in Dancing with Our Stars from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 at Embassy Suites by Hilton in Noblesville. St. Vincent is the presenting sponsor for the event, which benefits Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County.

Among the participants are Zionsville resident Kristi Lee, cohost of “The Bob & Tom Show,” and Chris Jensen, Noblesville Common Council member who is running for mayor in 2019.

Booth, an owner and managing director of aFit, which is focused on providing information technology, said dance instructor Rob Jenkins has worked with her to incorporate a statement about the evolution of women from mostly being worker bees in the ‘80s to being in leadership positions and owning businesses.

“Being someone who has often been the only, or one of very few, women in a room full of men ever since my engineering degree at Purdue to owning my own business, it makes this especially personal to me,” Booth said. “We have come a long way yet still have more to do.”

Booth eagerly accepted the challenge to participate.

“When I was asked, I thought, ‘Wait, I can help a worthy cause and dance at the same time? I am so in,’” she said. “I love to help others. My mom used to volunteer for Meals on Wheels many years ago. Knowing I am helping people is a big deal. And I just love to dance, so it is the perfect combination.”

Booth has danced routines in front of small audiences in Darren’s Ballroom showcases and ballroom competitions.

“No one watches ballroom competitions. I do them to challenge myself. And showcases have a very small audience and are not competitive at all,” she said. “So, the amount of people at this venue, having it be a DWOS format, and that I learned a brand new difficult dance in a short amount of time, all makes this much harder than anything I have done before.”

Riverview Health Chief Financial Officer Brenda Baker, a Noblesville resident, has attended the event the last couple of years.

“It will be great to be a part of it,” Baker Baker said. “I am just a little nervous about the performance. (Dance instructor) Suresh (Nair) is amazing, and I know that he will help me through it.”

“It is an amazing organization that fills a need in our community,” Baker said. “I also occasionally deliver meals and have seen firsthand the impact that Meals on Wheels has on the individual clients.”

Derek Burton, a Fishers resident and Meadow Brook director of community relations, is eager to participate.

“I was nervous in the beginning, but my partner has helped me get past that feeling,” Burton said. “I am all about trying new things.”

Burton Mike Wickham, a loan consultant for Caliber Home Loans, said he is fortunate to help a good cause while having fun.

“I am very much looking forward to this event to help the cause for Meals on Wheels along with having some video footage of me dancing for my 4-year-old twin boys to get a good laugh,” said Wickham, who has been a spectator at the Wickham event for a few years.

Denise Abshire is another participant from McCordsville. Other dancers from Carmel are Michael Rothenberger and Anne White.

Other participants are Tom Ferrara, Fishers, and Indianapolis residents Dani Aleksa and Beth Cook.

A short play, “Black Pioneers: Roberts Settlement,” along with a supplementary exhibition and live interpretation, will be featured at Conner Prairie in Fishers on Saturdays in September. Visitors can hear the story of free people of color who immigrated to Hamilton County from North Carolina in the 1830s. The pioneers bought land from the federal government and established a thriving settlement among Quaker neighbors.

The play is for ages 8 and up and set for Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 inside of Prairietown.

Shows are at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Visitors will be able to interact with exhibit elements, including a video with historic images from Roberts Settlement families, interspersed with images from current Roberts Settlement descendants. Visitors also will be able to talk with an interpreter about the Roberts Settlement history and explore maps, timelines and historical papers to learn about the experience of free people of color moving west in the early 19th century.

Tyszka makes Indiana debut

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com As the mother of two children younger than 2 years old, Brynn Tyszka had to take time off THEATER from the stage after moving to Carmel from Rochester, N.Y. in 2016.

“I’ve been craving it,” Tyszka said.

Tyszka is making her Tyszka Indiana debut in the Actors Theatre of Indiana’s “A Comedy of Tenors” Sept. 7 to 30 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Tyszka was directing, choreographing, teaching and acting in Rochester.

“Farce is one of my favorite forms because I’m a naturally fast person,” she said.

“I love physical comedy. I like the challenge of making exaggerated characters real. In theater, we only tell stories of best and worst days. Farce is that on crack. It’s the best and worst day for people that are highly dramatic.”

Tyszka is excited about her character’s Russian accent.

“I love accents, and I have not done this one yet,” Tyszka said.

This is the Indiana premiere of the play.

Darrin Murrell, from Parker City, directed ATI’s last farce, “Unnecessary Farce,” in 2016.

“I’m always drawn to farce and comedy,” Murrell said. “I’ve had a long connection with ‘Lend Me A Tenor,’ which this play is a sequel to it.”

Murrell Murrell said he worked with the playwright of both plays, Ken Ludwig, in Chicago in the early 1990s. He also had good friends who were involved in the world premiere of “A Comedy of Tenors” in Cleveland in 2015.

Murrell said he is fortunate to have an amazing cast that will carry the production.

Westfield resident Don Farrell, one of ATI’s three co-founders, has a dual role of Tito and his doppelganger Beppo.

Farrell said it’s a great way to start ATI’s 14th season.

“You can lose yourself for two hours in hysteria,” Farrell said.

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: Inside Sun King Spirits taproom and distillery, 351 Monon Blvd., Carmel What to get: Figgy Piggy Price: $12 Anna’s take: Pi is one of four restaurants inside Sun King Spirits, a taproom and distillery that features the emerging concept of food halls, where multiple eateries — each with different menus — are housed in one establishment. Upon entering the distillery, guests can be seated and browse menus from all four restaurants before choosing one. Guests also have the opportunity to sit upstairs or at the bar.

From Pi, I chose the Figgy Piggy. Pi’s pizzas are personal-sized that also can be shared. The Figgy Piggy consists of mozzarel-

la, goat cheese, fig jam, mushrooms and prosciutto with a heap of arugula in the center of the pie, all atop a thin, crunchy crust. The pizza is baked in a wood-fired oven, which creates a lightly charred crust. The goat cheese brings forth sweet notes that mellow the pizza and complements the fig jam and saltiness of the prosciutto. The arugula provides a fresh, nutty flavor that tops off the pizza. The crackle of the crust complemented the richness of the overall dish.

Because the dish is so rich, with a hint of

tartness from the jam, I recommend sharing it with another person and ordering one of the other pizzas, such as the Pineapple Express, which includes pineapple, ham and sea salt, and a meat lover’s pizza, among other varieties.

Suggested pairings: A pint of Osiris Pale Ale ($5). The beer makes a good pairing because it it’s a paler, hoppy beverage with a slight acidity that cuts the richness of the prosciutto on the pizza and harmonizes with the greens.

Do you even know how to adult? JOIN US FOR OUR FIRST PRODUCTION Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt

I need to go to the dentist. I got my sixmonth appointment reminder a few months ago and promptly GRAMMAR GUY canceled.

“Would you like to reschedule?” asked the receptionist.

“No,” I replied. “I’ll get back to you.”

It’s not that I wanted to quit the dentist or anything, but balancing a new job, young kids and house maintenance is tough work.

Adulting is hard.

During the past 10 years, the word “adult” has been verbified. And, before you blame the hypothetical 26-year-old self-described “emerging adult” who lives in his parents’ basement, you have to consider the parents’ role in all of this. Parents of millennials have practically turned coddling into a competitive sport. I’m not surprised that 24 percent of 25 to 34-year-olds in the U.S. now live at home (Pew Research Center).

Adulting (which shouldn’t be used as a serious word) means to engage in adultlike behavior or activities. These things include (but are certainly not limited to) ironing your clothes, going to the dentist, eating vegetables and paying for your own

After my freshman year of college while I was away at a summer internship, my parents actually sold my bed in a not-so-subtle way of telling me it was time to move out.

Depending on its usage, adulting can be used jokingly by a well-adjusted person in their 20s or 30s to refer to mundane daily tasks associated with normal life. Alternately, the term gets used unironically by (technically) adults who are waiting for someone to come and hand them their dream job.

You can adult. I believe in you. If you’re a parent whose man-child needs to read this, pin it to his clothes you set out for him this morning. Do this only after you have read it yourself. It’s time to empower people who are living in a constant state of “adultolescence” instead of enabling them from moving forward. Maybe then we can stop using adult as a verb and start actually being adults.
