New football helmets detect potential concussions

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com As a former football player, Traders Point Christian Academy coach Kyle Johnson knows how tempting it might be to stay in a safety game despite a headache from a hard hit.

“We’re all stupid when we’re young and not thinking what it’s going to be like when we’re in our 50s,” said Johnson, who played at Mt. Vernon High School and Olivet Nazarene University. “I didn’t want to come out of the game if I had a headache or my head was throbbing. I would have wanted to play because I worked hard to earn that spot, as silly as it is. Sports guys talk about protecting us from ourselves, there’s some truth to that.”

Taking the pressure off players to make the call, TPCA players are wearing new state-of-theart Riddell helmets with sensor pads.

Johnson, in his third year at the Whitestown high school, said the helmets arrived late in the summer, just in time for two-a-day practices. The helmets cost about twice as much as the regular helmets at a little more than $400, he said. They have not given off any alerts so far.

“When they test marketed them, they collected data on 1.8 million hits,” Johnson said. “The sensors are all around the helmet. If a hit in one of those two areas is in the top 1 or 2 percent for impact reading, it sends an alert.”

In practice, a coach has the remote control and during games a trainer has it.

“It buzzes like you are waiting for a table at Outback Steakhouse,” Johnson said.

The alert reveals which player’s helmet is affected. Johnson said a concussion protocol is started just like it would if a coach noticed a player was slow getting up after a hard hit.

“Even if the kid said ‘Leave me alone, I’m fine,’ he’s checked,” Johnson said. “Being a coach for

many years, I’ve had kids tell me that and later we find they had a concussion.”

TPCA has just 18 players, so the school has 21 helmets, with the parents helping to pay a good share of the cost.

Johnson’s son, Jacob, is a junior quarterback and strong safety.

Jacob said the helmet is a good safety valve.

“They’re very comfortable, I don’t even think about having a helmet on my head, I go ahead and play,” Jacob said.

Jacob said he is telling others he knows about the benefits of the helmet.

St.Vincent Sports provides athletic trainers for TPCA football practices and games.

“It’s not a magic bullet, but it is another potential tool,” stated St.Vincent’s Dave Weikel, also a head athletic trainer for USA Football. “It can help us and be another set of eyes on the field. We will evaluate the athlete and if there is even a chance a concussion is suspected, they will have to be cleared by a physician.”

TPCA athletic director Adam Stevenson said the helmets are a positive step. Safer tackling techniques can help, too.

“There are so many people passionate about the sport that if we need to change how it is played to make it safer we are going to do whatever we can,” he said.

Starkey Road bridge likely to receive upgrades

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Parks Commission is determining the future of the Starkey Road bridge.

The bridge originally came into parks question because of its aging appearance, especially the underside. Bridge engineer Steve Christian spoke to the Parks board Aug. 12 about the structure.

“Deterioration is something that doesn’t slow down in the summer,” Christian said.

“The bridge itself is plenty strong, there is no concern about the strength of it and it will carry pedestrian traffic. The major concern would be deterioration and potential concrete fall.”

Christian and his firm took some data they accumulated from examining the bridge and came up with a few options for the board to consider.

Christian suggested that the board not use the first option, which resulted in continuing additional patching of the bridge.

“It’s not a good option, because it is very marginal. The amount of patching needed is spending so much money for the small service life,” Christian said.

More patching would result in an additional 10 to 15 years of bridge life.

Christian provided other options, which included total bridge replacement or fiber wrapping the infrastructure.

Fiber wrapping would expand the bridge life about 20 to 25 years, a decade longer than additional patching. It replaces all deteriorated concrete to get a smooth surface, more or less laminating the concrete to give it more

strength and life to hold the bridge in place.

The third offer was to completely reconstruct the bridge. Christian recommended the second option based on price and durability.

The board acknowledged his suggestion and will discuss the options before making a final decision.

Commission discusses routes for Bennett Parkway

The Zionsville Redevelopment Commission held its monthly meeting Aug. 24 and discussed several projects.

What happened: The commission spoke about updates to the Bennett Parkway Extension What it means: The wetlands and pipelines investigation is complete, which provides some preliminary routes for the commission to review. There are many alternatives to the routes, as it is expensive to go over pipelines. The commission is looking into speaking with Carmel officials about lengthening the route into Carmel to help avoid some of the wetlands.

What happened: The commission heard an update on the Creekside Corporate Park infrastructure and the costs.

What it means: Originally budgeted at $8 million, the Creekside Corporate Park infrastructure project is expected to only cost $4.8 million. It includes water, sewer, stormwater, gateway entrance and vegetation. ‘The Road to Hope’ leads away from violence Commentary by Sue Forry Violence has a long reach. No matter where the violence happens, it finds its way into our hearts as we yearn for calm and peace. public safety Zionsville has felt the sting of violence in recent years. In 2014, a young man who grew up in Zionsville (now living in Broad Ripple) and a member of Zionsville United Methodist Church was attacked, robbed and stabbed as he returned home from work. With quick help, he survived.

In 2015, Chaz Bennington, a long-time employee of Cobblestone Grill and friend of many, was found murdered in his eastside apartment. There have been others that have touched individual families. All of these events did not happen within the Town of Zionsville, but the pain and hurt resonated throughout our community.

Over the past year, ZUMC has been lifting the work of the

Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition in prayer and giving support through volunteer hours and financial donations. This organization is a non-profit faith-based group whose mission is to address critical issues and reduce violence in Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

of hope and help to find a better way of life.

Harrison visited ZUMC in January to speak about violence and how the church can help. ZUMC is now officially a Ten Point Church, and we are hosting a prayer initiative at 7 p.m.

Sept. 23 that is open to the public to cover the work of the Ten Point Coalition. “The Road to Hope” will feature Harrison, Rev. Charles Ellis of Ten Point and Rev. James Jackson of Fervent Prayer Church.

We have joined other churches in Indianapolis and Gary as partners in this work. Zionsville is the third city in Indiana to have a Ten Point Chapter. This designation comes with a commitment to continue our support through prayer and service.

Zionsville tops another list – Zionsville has been ranked as “The Snobbiest Place in Indiana,” according to RoadSnacks, a website whose stated goal is to “show you the real side of places that not everyone wants to hear.” The rankings were based on median home prices, median household income, percent of population with a college degree, private schools per capita and art galleries per capita for municipalities with more than 5,000 people. A related site, HomeSnacks, recently ranked Zionsville as Indiana’s “Best Place to Live.”

“It’s a level of transparency that most police agencies don’t give their community,” Anderson said. “It gives everyone the opportunity to see where the resources are being utilized.

The Zionsville Police Department does not have a map similar to Whitestown’s but plans to implement one in the future.

“We are trying to determine who will do data entries. We are looking into it and we may indeed implement something similar to what Whitestown has,” ZPD Sgt. Adrian Martin said.

The Whitestown Police Department has launched a website that allows the public to view monthly crime public safety stats on an interactive map.

The site uses Google Maps to pinpoint police activity throughout town to show residents what the police department has been up to and special focus areas. The information on the site, although only available since June, goes back as far as Jan. 1.

“It maps out all the places where we’ve written traffic tickets, the arrest reports and those kind of things,” said Dennis Anderson, Whitestown chief of police.

The information is made available on the 10th of each month. The department has been using the system before they made it available to the public to help plan patrol strategies and determine where they want to deploy their resources.

“It allows people in the community to see the heavy active areas where enforcements are taking place,” Anderson said.

Users of the site can click on the map and to see a pop-up box detailing the police activity at a certain location.

A look at Zionsville in 1885

By Terri Horvath • news@currentzionsville.com Thanks to the opportunities brought by the railroad, Zionsville had grown to a significant stop along the back in the day tracks during the 19th century.

The town’s original plat in 1852 consisted of 28 acres specifically to accommodate the Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad.

As the railroad plowed its way north, merchants were lured to the area seeking new opportunities.

One business that seemed to thrive at the time was the saloon. While the railroad was being built through town, seven saloons sprung up rapidly to serve the railway work-

ers. An active temperance movement eventually whittled the number down significantly.

Other less controversial businesses also were established.

By 1900, the town had spread to 640 acres, or one square mile. The population was about 1,500 people with more than 70 businesses in operation, plus an assortment of doctors, attorneys and other professionals. Most served the agricultural economy. Among them were blacksmiths, a wagon wheel factory and a small stockyard for cattle waiting to be shipped to market.

The town also had an active social scene.

An opera house brought in lecturers and entertainers. Plus, Zion Park was the site of a popular chautauqua-like event every year.

Group tackles philosophical, religious questions in relaxed setting

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com A handful of Zionsville Christian Church members had heard about the concept of Pub Theology emerging in other church communities. cover story So Bart Archer did some research and helped formed a group about a year ago to discuss philosophical issues in a no-judgment setting.

Rob Berger, a church member and Zionsville resident, has been participating for several months.

“It’s uplifting to meet with people we don’t meet with regularly and thought-provoking because we hear different ideas we don’t hear every day,” Berger said. “It’s very relaxed. I like the atmosphere where anyone can say anything they want and no one is critical. We hope to see it grow.”

Berger, 63, said attendees come from a diverse age group.

“My wife (Paulette) and I are in the mid-60s so we’re the old people in the group,” Berger said.

Archer, 44, said the group was assisted at the start by their Disciples of Christ church’s former minister, Mark Condrey, who has since moved to another church in Richmond, Ky. Archer creates postcards with three or four topics on tje,. The group discusses one topic at each monthly meeting, lasting an hour to 90 minutes. The group will meet at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Carolina Grill, as it does on the third Wednesday of every month. Archer, a Zionsville resident, presents the topic to open discussion.

“It’s kind of a free-flowing discussion,” Archer said.

“Sometimes we will end up branching out into other things. You may start with a topic about faith and it will lead to a discussion on prayer. We’re not trying to limit discussion to only talk about the topic if there is something else someone wants to share.”

Archer said there are typically between seven to 13 participants. After the session, Archer asks the group if there are discussion questions they would like to address in the future.

For example, one session they discussed the concept of whether everything happens for a reason and if God has a plan for individuals.

“It’s not like here’s a (Bible) verse, let’s talk about it. It’s not a Sunday school topic type of idea,” Archer said. “It’s more philosophical – how does this affect society and how do I make this work in our culture. We made some simple rules like respecting each other’s opinions. If you are talking all the time, it might be time to sit back and listen.”

Archer serves as chairman of the church’s growth committee.

“It’s grow numbers, it’s grow spiritually, it’s not specific,” Archer said.

Anyone is welcome The majority are members of his church, but others are welcome, Archer said. Kat Higgins, who lives on the west side of Carmel, has been attending Pub Theology with fiancé Chad Daugherty. Neither is a ZCC member.

Higgins said it is a better way to get to know people than just seeing them at a church service. Daugherty’s father, Jim, is a member of ZCC. Higgins, a life-long Catholic, and Daugherty, who was raised Methodist, have been exploring options for a church they can attend together.

Higgins said her two college-age daughters aren’t interested in attending church now but she believes they would enjoy going to Pub Theology.

“The nature of the Disciples church is there is no wrong way,” Higgins said. “There are different ways that God approaches everyone. It’s strikingly more progressive. I didn’t expect it to be. Zionsville is a small town and it’s an older, established church. It’s very non-offensive.”

Higgins, who has attended four meetings, said the guidelines of being open to other’s ideas allow for free

discussion.

“One of the rules is to make sure you reaffirm everyone’s right to believe something different,” Higgins said.

Higgins, who also has been attending ZCC services with Daugherty, said to become a member would mean leaving the Catholic church, so it’s not a decision to take lightly.

Whether they join the church or not, Higgins said they plan to keep attending Pub Theology.

“The value in practicing religion no matter what the format is you spend time thinking of ways to be a better person, and this is a very enjoyable way to do that,” Higgins said. “Some of the questions are not that comfortable, they’re not horribly uncomfortable, but if you’re going to do self-examination you can. I think self-examination is a healthy practice and hearing how other people struggle with those things makes you feel more human also.”

FRO M THE BACKSHOP Sheriff gets win with detour light The I-65 Wildcat Creek bridge near Lafayette has caused something of a nightmare for INDOT officials and motorists, as well as residents and businesses along the detour route. Sadly, there has been one fatality and multiple accidents. Thankfully, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office made a Facebook plea to INDOT for a temporary stoplight on the impermanent route, and the state listened.

Voila! The light is installed, and we hope that brings relief until the interstate reopens. We urge caution on the detour route, stoplight aside. You’ll get there. It just takes a bit longer. Been there, done that.

That race could reduce Republican hopeful Donald Trump to a sideshow, which many believe he already has become.

The cool side of the pillow Commentary by Terry Anker It has been a sleepless night – tossing and turning as if the dilemma’s resolution could be found on the cool side of the pillow. What is keeping that much needed (and desired) sweet, deep sleep out of reach? Yes, there is much to do. However, there was much to do yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that one – and yet each delivered a perfect and restful slumber. The mind wonders from one topic to the next without finding a satisfactory place to rest. Thoughts emerge and recede never fully gaining the benefit of consideration.

Soon, dawn is upon us. The sounds of the night are giving way to the industrious early birds beckoning first light. Focus is emerging from unresolved problems dwindling to a few. The digital clock across the room is advancing – at first by the minute, then in groups of ten or so at a time. What will the day bring? Will the resources and

ability to achieve the objective be attained?

If at all, can the problem find a solution?

And if it cannot, does it really matter?

Soon, the house will come to life. The dog will awaken, stretch awkwardly, and nudge me to let him outside. Alarms will sound and school busses will arrive. If only there was time for a second cup of coffee. Just take it along for the drive to the office. On the radio, the weather forecaster predicts the climate in clichéd but comfortable prose. Did the extra hour this morning of silent thought prepare for the challenges ahead or would the benefit have been greater from a bit more REM? At this point, the machinery of life has begun again and we come to it prepared as we are. Happily, another chance for sleep arrives with nightfall.

My husband Doo and I began participating in triathlons last year. We were looking for something new to whip us into shape that wouldn’t require knee replacehumor ment surgery any time soon.

I bring this challenge to your attention because in my quest to beat Doo, my formercollegiate-athlete brother-in-law and every middle-aged female on the planet, I’ve found that in addition to actually training, looking the part is equally important. To that end, I stepped up my game this summer by purchasing not only an honest-to-goodness road bike (the hybrid model I used in my first race was so slow I should have just attached a wicker basket and enjoyed a nice ride to market), but also real adult goggles (that don’t fog over after 2.3 seconds and won’t have to be stripped away for the second half of the swim) and a legit cycling outfit (on sale and straight from China). For me at least, appearing to be a capable, competitive athlete really does provide a boost in confidence, and consequently, in my performance.

Plus, if you look like the winners, then even if a pregnant woman pushing a jogging stroller blows past you in the run, you can still pretend it never happened as you roam the post-race celebration, free brew in hand.

The problem arises when people assume you know more than you actually do.

Case in point, I recently fell off my bike and dropped the chain on a very busy riding trail.

I received a few offers of help, but no one actually stopped. I think I looked too dang good! They probably thought I was sprawled in the weeds on purpose, perhaps practicing a therapeutic yoga move. And then I crashed again, less than 10 feet away! This time?

Chirp.

Alas, though I’ve done a decent job of exuding the serious triathlete vibe, I’m really just a gal trying to stay fit without bionics.

“There’s someone at the door,” said my wife, which is never a statement of fact, but rather a request for me to go humor see who it is. Generally, it’s best that Mary Ellen not answer the door. She’s a softy and can’t say no to solicitors, which is why we have 20 years’ worth of garbage bags.

The young man at the door was selling a new cable service. As a creature of habit, I am not inclined to change anything unless something much better comes along … and I say that proudly after 35 years of marriage.

The time was 7:03 p.m. Keegan began by trying to convince me of the benefits of a faster Internet connection.

“How long does it take you to get on the Internet now?” he asked.

“Well, I start upstairs with a beverage, then, with this pesky knee of mine, it takes me a while to get down the stairs to the computer.

By the time I find my glasses, we’re looking at eight to 10 minutes.”

Keegan was on his cell phone, on hold during our entire conversation, trying to get approval from his supervisor for the discount package he presented to me. He explained the advantages of this offer, which meant instead of 240 shows available every hour, we could get 270 – giving us an extra 30 we also had no time to watch. The deal-maker was that he was going to provide us with four DVRs, the devices that record TV programs for future viewing. We only have three TVs, so we’ll just stick one next to the toilet in the half bath.

I bet it will creep out our guests at our next dinner party.

It was now 10:05 p.m. The phone rang and it was yet another cable service wanting to talk about their new promotion, which sounded pretty good, too. “Let me think about that,” I said. “Can I put you on hold for a moment?”

Generally, it’s best that Mary Ellen not answer the door.

Leftovers? Or forgotten 8th grade science project?

I wasn’t sure what it was I was looking at.

I knew it came out of the refrigerator and was a leftover from something.

My plan was to peruse plain talk the assortment of plastic boxes in the fridge until I found something I could identify, warm it up and avoid having to fix something fresh. It wasn’t working. Everything I opened looked more like a forgotten eighth grade science project than anything that had ever been edible.

Worse, I had no clue as to the ancestry of anything. The only thing I could say for certain was that none of it was in the fridge when we bought it 10 years ago. Thus defeated, I pulled out a couple pots and pans and started supper from scratch. I also promised myself I would clean out the fridge before the next full moon.

This happens all the time, and I know why.

I save leftovers because that’s what my mother did. After all, we were in the middle of the Great Depression and she had convinced us that anything left on our plate would amply feed a family of starving Armenians.

So, whatever we didn’t eat got scraped into a dish, covered and put in the fridge.

The next day it came out again as something new, blended together with soup, sauce or vegetable.

Leftover roast got chopped up and joined forces with leftover potatoes to become hash.

Mac and cheese got a dash of tomato soup and hamburger to become something my mother called slumgolian. She said it was an old family recipe, although my grandmother raised a doubtful eyebrow whenever she mentioned it. Leftover rice got the same treatment to grace the table as Spanish rice.

Most of these dishes were edible. Some, like the slumgolian and the Spanish rice, were actually tasty. Others, like creamed parsnips and fried turnips, sat woefully untouched. Even Dad asserted – as kindly as possible so as not to hurt Mom’s feelings – that no Armenian on the planet, starving or not, would touch them.

Even in later years when TV dinners made cooking all but a forgotten art, Mom still saved the leftovers. That half slice of turkey and those two baked apple slices were just too good to throw away.

I inherited this compulsion, of course. The difference is, Mom always used what she saved, edible or not. I intend to but usually don’t, waiting instead until I hear noises from the fridge that signal a new stage of evolution has emerged among the covered dishes.

A full moon is only a few days away, and it’s time to clean out the fridge.

The newest addition to Indy Irish Fest this year is Barry “Jazz” Finnegan, an award winning charcoal portrait artist from Dublin. Finnegan will be onsite creating a commemorative piece for the festival during the weekend of activity.

Celtic rock bands Black Irish Texas and the Wild Colonial Bhoys will be featured during the preview pub concert night that Thursday. Event organizers are making it a point to celebrate the festival’s 20 years by bringing back bands from the earliest years or ones that have never played the festival before.

“People from Ireland, they’re opening their homes to you, meeting people in bars, everyone is just welcoming,” said Indy Irish Fest marketing manager Erin O’Rourke “The point of our festival is to celebrate that Irish culture. I think that was what we wanted to do, celebrate, let people have a good time, and let people experience all the parts of this culture.”

Family activities include sheep-herding exhibitions and the Celtic Canines tent, featuring dogs of Irish breeds. More than 25 vendors selling Irish wares will be included. O’Rourke added that vendors of all price ranges were included for families looking to purchase Irish items on a budget.

Tickets to Indy Irish Fest are $10 in advance for adults and $15 the day of. Students ages 14 to 18 with I.D. may purchase tickets for $10 the day of. Children 13 and under are $5, and children under 5 are free.

Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but every year we need to discuss food safety because each season people are either new to tailgating or others simply forget to be careful. You can be sure that from each game some tailgater will go home to be awakened in the night by all the bad symptoms of food poisoning.

It’s very easy to avoid problems by following our simple SAFE rules.

• Safe Start - buy fresh USDA certified beef, pork, or poultry.

• Safe Prep - cook all hot foods thoroughly (beef and pork: 160 degrees; and poultry parts: 170). Keep hands and cooking/ serving items clean.

• Safe Storage - keep cold foods cold at least at 40 degrees. Use two coolers: one for beverages (opened frequently) and the other for foods that must be kept cold before and after serving.

Since this early part of the season is a time for lighter cold foods, here is a recipe that

should please your guests but not fill them up.

Black Bean Salad Chipotle Monterey Jack Chicken Sausage Ingredients: 1 package JOHNSONVILLE® Cajun Chicken Sausage or Johnsonville Chipotle, Monterey Jack Cheese Chicken Sausage, sliced into coins, 1 red bell pepper, diced, 1 green bell pepper, diced, 1 green bell pepper, diced, 1 yellow bell pepper, diced, 1/2 cup red onion, diced, 1 can (15 ounces) corn, drained, 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained, 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 1 lime, juiced, Salt and pepper to taste Directions: In a large bowl, combine peppers, onion, corn, black beans, sausage and cilantro. In a small bowl, whisk olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over other ingredients and toss well. Serve with tortilla chips.

Yes, that’s right, berries and vinegar make a delicious and quick dessert even on a busy weekday night. The sweetness of the berries and vanilla ice cream, mellow balsamic and lemon zest to brighten the flavors makes it an irresistible treat!

Note: Pick berries carefully – big is not always better. Strawberries should be firm, fully red, smell lush and ripe.

The ballroom dancing event benefits Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County “The show is very loosely based on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’” said Beth Gehlhausen, executive director of the Noblesville-based Meals on Wheels. ”We pair local celebrities, they’re people in the community so they may not be known by everybody but lots of people may know them, and we pair them up with a professional. We pay for 10 lessons and if they want to continue, that’s up to them and their dancer.”

Gehlhausen said among the dances performed last year were East Coast Swing, a foxtrot, a samba and a waltz.

“Our suggested vote (donation) is $25 or higher but we have people vote using all kinds of amounts,” Gehlhausen said.

Gehlhausen said the event raised more than $24,000 last year for Meals on Wheels.

Fall Festival’s Outstanding Teen will also receive scholarship funds as a result of winning the competition. Girls who live anywhere in Boone County are eligible to compete.

Honey Dewdrops come to Carmel

A unique performance with a mix of old American music and bluegrass will come to The Warehouse Sept.

Performance 5 in the form of husband and wife duo, Kagey Parrish and Laura Wortman.

Parrish and Wortman are the two parts of the band The Honey Dewdrops.

“We are singer-songwriters who love a lot of old American music, old country music and old bluegrass styles,” Parrish said.

“There’s an old, familiar sound to (our music) coming from traditional American influences but written from our point of view and the world we live in today.”

Parrish said he and Wortman write most of their own music, and about 90 percent of their performance will be original work. He described their music as having local harmonies, with their musical instruments consisting of guitars, a mandolin and a banjo.

The couple started performing music full time in 2009, and while they are not on tour, they live in Baltimore. They’ve been making music together for 12 years after they met at a rehearsal for a college band, but The Honey Dewdrops have only been in

New owner makes few changes at jewelry store

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Not much has changed since David Haug took over Jewel Box Jewelers from Philip and Regina Owens, who had owned update the business for 41 years.

The staff of the Main Street store remained intact - that was important to Haug - including a full time in-house jeweler for repairs.

“I’m proud to be able to say we do it right here,” Haug said.

The lines and brands that have always been at Jewel Box Jeweler are still present. And even maintaing the little details like keeping the purple awning are important to Haug.

“I don’t want things to change,” he said.

But Haug has made adjustments, like adding estate jewelry and expanding the bridal business, something that was important to him to give couples more style options.

“If I’ve learned anything in this business over 15 years, it’s that bridal can grow your business,” Haug said.

He’s added jewelry from Funky Artsy - a Cincinnati-based jeweler using sterling and semiprecious stones with unique, chunky styles.

and the people of Zionsville who want to shop locally. He recognizes that some customers may initially consider large jewelry stores without realizing that Jewel Box Jewelers can provide many of the same items.

“We’ve got it, we can get it, or we can do it,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s $10 or $10,000.”

With employees who have been with the store longer than he has, Haug has found him-

self continually learning from his staff as the new guy in the office.

“They’re great people,” he said, and he recognizes that maintaining these employees is important to his clientele as well.

In the future Haug expects to expand the watch department, although he still carries the Jewel Box Jeweler brand watches.

“I like having something that’s just ours,” he said.

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Terry Rake, owner of Lebanon-based Titus Bakery, was determined not to go into her father’s baking business. achievement When he was ready to retire she even found another buyer until she had a change of heart.

“He’d made the business what it is today,” she said. “I thought, we can take it and expand.”

Since purchasing Titus Bakery at the end of 2012, the business has more than tripled and is being recognized as one of the 2015 Indiana Companies to Watch, an awards program presented by the State of Indiana and the Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

“It just kind of reaffirms that we are doing something right,” she said. “We try and run our business the way we think it should be run and we’re glad to know that other people think we’re doing a good job.”

While Rake and her husband, Tom, are longtime residents of Zionsville, they have no plans

to expand beyond Westfield in the short term.

“I definitely want to be in other communities,” she said, “but I don’t want to jump into something and not get it right.”

Rake credits her loyal customers and hardworking employees for keeping their business strong.

Denise K. Pierce was the sole employee 15 years ago when she started her medical reimbursement solutions company. Now with 20 employees, her business has expanded to serve five states.

Goal setting for better health Commentary by Debra Balos, DO Are you thinking about making a significant change to improve your health? When people want to make big changes in their lives, such as eating healthier, quitting smoking, losing weight or exercising regularly, goal setting can be a improvement great tool. It’s usually best to break down your plan into both short- and long-term goals.

Here are other suggestions for setting effective goals: • Start small. Don’t overwhelm yourself before you even get started. Trying to make too many changes too fast can thwart your success. Begin with just one or two manageable goals that you’re likely to achieve and work your way up to bigger, more challenging goals.

• Make goals specific. It’s easier to chart your progress when goals are specific.

For example, instead of setting a goal to “exercise more,” be definitive and aim to “exercise four to five times a week for at least 30 minutes.”

• Write down your goals. Make a list of your goals and keep them in clear sight. It may even be helpful to set them as reminders on your computer or smartphone.

• Celebrate your success. Reward yourself when you reach each goal. It will motivate you to continue toward the next milestone.

• Look for support. It can be easier to make big lifestyle or health changes when you have good resources and people in your corner. Telling close family members and friends of your plans or finding a partner who shares your same goals can be motivating and provide encouragement.

New drug shows promise for treating Alzheimer’s

By Joseph Knoop • news@currentzionsville.com A new clinical trial being performed at Indiana University may provide hope for Alzheimer’s disease patients, with the medicine potential end result being the first new FDA-approved drug designed to treat the disease since 2003.

The NOBLE study, which involves 450 patients from more than 50 hospitals across the country, treated a third of patients with a low dose of a new investigational drug, another third with a higher dose and the remaining third with a placebo. The study, which is still in progress, will treat patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s over the course of 14 months.

Alzheimer’s, a type of dementia that impairs memory, thinking, behavior and other cognitive functions, is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. One in three seniors die with some form of Alzheimer’s or other dementia, and more than

5 million Americans have the disease, with no cure in sight.

“Historically, there’s been some difficulty in diagnosing Alzheimer’s,” said Dr. Martin Farlow, an Indiana University neurology professor and director of the Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Center.

He believes the new drug is promising. “[The brain] is like the world’s most complicated computer. It’s a very difficult task to develop a drug that’s going to halt the degenerative process, but we are certainly making progress,” he said.

For patient and caregiver couples like Carmel residents Josie and Don Essig, though they are involved in a separate study, clinical trials such as NOBLE provide a modicum of hope. “[Since we began the trial], we’ve not seen any declines,” Don said. “[Josie] is doing very well. Hopefully it can help a lot of people.”

More than 100,000 people living in Indiana currently have Alzheimer’s disease.

Blueprint for Improvement: Updating your ’90s kitchen Before

Commentary by Larry Greene Background Info: This home is located in the Avian Glen Subdivision in Carmel. It was built in 1994 and the kitchen was original to the home. The homeowners have lived there for eight years and were ready for an update.

Before Problems: The cabinets were old thermafoil cabinets that were beginning to peel. The island was too small for the space and countertop would often move in place.

The space was poorly utilized and did not meet the needs of the family.

After

After Solutions: The goal was to achieve a fully functional and beautiful kitchen for a busy family.

1. A large prep island was installed to create room for additional seating.

2. The built-in desk and pantry closet were eliminated to provide room for a more functional cabinet pantry with roll-out drawers. This also provided room for additional countertop space.

3. Pull out wire baskets were installed providing the perfect storage solution for produce.

4. Under cabinet lighting and two large pen-

dant lights were installed to brighten up the space.

5. Granite countertops replaced the outdated and decrepit laminate tops. Solid, black granite with a matte finish was used for the perimeter and lighter granite with ample movement was installed on the island.

6. Personalized city tile backsplash was installed allowing the clients to select tile of the cities where they previously lived.

7. Hardwood flooring was installed throughout the first level creating a continuous flow between the kitchen and the rest of the home.

8. New ceramic tile was installed in the adjacent laundry room and half bathroom completing the flow and new look of the home with the kitchen.

9. The traditional kitchen was energized by adding industrial touches in the backsplash, island seating, and lighting.

Deir el-Medina is the name given to the ruins of an ancient Egyptian village that housed workers building tombs in the travel Valley of the Kings. Records from the site reveal an ancient economic development strategy.

Contrary to popular beliefs, Egyptian tombs, including the Great Pyramids, were not built by slaves but by workers employed by the government. When Egyptians began entombing pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor, they built a town about two miles away for the tomb builders and their families. The town, originally named The Place of the Truth, was founded in about 1500 B.C. and lasted until interment in the Valley of the Kings ended about 400 years later. At its peak, the town included more than 100 four or five-room stone houses.

when they were ill or, on at least one occasion, drunk. During their time off, the workers constructed chapels and tombs for themselves and their families. The government provided the houses, medical care and laundry services.

Wages consisted of food, firewood and other supplies the workers needed, with occasional bonuses of items for religious celebrations and materials for their eventual mummification. The painters, stone masons, carpenters and sculptors received about three times the wages of a field hand. When the skilled workers were dissatisfied with their wages and benefits under Pharaoh Ramses III, they went on strike until their demands were satisfied.

Deir el-Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, includes some of the most finely decorated tombs in Egypt. It also provides an example of a government creating middle class jobs 3,500 years ago.
