Zionsville breaks ground on town hall

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Zionsville officials gathered Aug. 25 to break ground on the new town hall building, which will be built directly behind government the current one at 1100 W. Oak St. The $10.2 million, 42,600-square-foot facility will house the mayor’s office, fire administration and the planning, finance and technology departments. It will also provide public meeting spaces, a community room and have an outdoor

plaza that connects to the Rail Trail.

“Today marks the ceremonial beginning of our new physical building, but it really is a milestone showing the great growth and success of Zionsville,” Mayor Tim Haak said at the groundbreaking. “We believe the new town hall will be a source of great pride for this community.”

Town hall is currently housed in an aging former church building. Officials contemplated renovating it but determined it would not be worth the expense. The current town hall is expected to be demolished to make way for commercial development.

“While being in a refurbished 45-year-old church served the needs of the community at the time, it quickly became apparent that the town needed a building for the future,” Haak said, adding that the new town hall should meet Zionsville’s needs for the next 75 years.

CSO Architects designed the new town hall, and it will be constructed by Zionsville-based RLTurner Corporation, which also assisted with preparing the current town hall when officials moved in.

The new town hall is expected to be complete by the fall of 2017.

Church adds downtown campus

Thanks to a generous gift by faith one family from the congregation, who doesn’t want to be identified publicly, TPCC was able to purchase the 104-year-old historic former Jehovah’s Witness assembly hall, 1201 N. Delaware St., for $2.7 million in June and will now add a downtown Indianapolis campus, its third campus.

The downtown services are set to begin in early 2017. The auditorium has a capacity of 1,200. The building is more than 35,000 square feet.

“We really have a heart for the city,” said Pastor Petie Kinder, who serves as the downtown campus pastor. “Indianapolis is an incredible place and we are excited to serve those living and working in downtown.”

TPCC holds worship services at the northwest campus in Whitestown and at the north campus at Creekside Middle School in Carmel.

TPCC North will move from Creekside to a permanent location (1242 W. 136th St.) in Carmel in early 2017.

Kinder said the decision to add multiple locations is because people are driving to the

“There are a few hundred people downtown that are currently driving out of downtown neighborhoods to attend the north or northwest Indy Traders Point campuses,” Kinder said.

The average weekly worship attendance is 700 to 750 at Creekside and 5,200 to 5,500 at Whitestown.

“It’s not about attendance numbers to us, it’s about making a difference” Kinder said.

“We love the city of Indy and want to help with the work that’s already being done in the downtown area.”

Trekker captures local parks JOIN US FOR A

Zionsville parks and trails will soon be more accessible, at least online. The town recently used a high resolution recreation camera, known as the Google Trekker, to capture local images for Google Maps.

The town received the Trekker from the Indiana Parks and Recreation Dept., which is coordinating its use in 35 parks departments in Indiana. Zionsville used the Trekker Aug. 16 and 17.

“Our goal has been to just cover as much ground as possible, trying to take as many pictures as we can of Zionsville trails and parks,” said Amanda Dorman, Zionsville director of communications and community relations.

The multiple-lens camera can be worn as a backpack and carried on foot or attached to a golf cart to cover more area at a quicker pace.

The images should be available on Google Maps in the next six to 12 months.

“Two people from our parks department have been out with it,” Dorman said. “We have actually done pretty much all of the town’s parks. We’ve hit pretty much everything we

“What is really neat is it’s raising awareness of Zionsville as a destination. People that are unfamiliar with our parks and trails, whether they live here or they live somewhere else in the world, everyone will have virtual access via Google Maps,” Dorman said. “For people that don’t live here, it literally puts Zionsville on the map as a destination for parks and trails.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Boone County Community Foundation has decided to use a $6,000 Community Arts Endowment Grant to purchase art five “Walking Man” sculptures to be placed in Zionsville, Whitestown, Lebanon and Jamestown.

“We originally heard about these sculptures from a long-term donor who had purchased one from an auction, and he gifted it to Lions Park in Thorntown,” Boone County Community Foundation President Kristi Reynolds said. “So if you go to Thorntown, you see a giant 10foot, 1,200-pound sculpture decorated for the Turning of the Leaves Festival. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and we were thinking about what we could do to bring our community together through art.”

The foundation purchased the five sculptures for $10,000, with the cost not covered by the grant coming from its Community Impact Fund. Each community can decide where to place its sculpture and how to decorate it.

Zionsville is planning to install its Walking Man sculpture at the new town hall to be completed next fall.

“We are kind of on hold until early next year, and we will start to brainstorm what we want to do with it, whether we will be reaching out

to students or a local artist,” said Amanda Dorman, Zionsville director of communications.

“We are not setting anything in stone until next year.”

Whitestown plans to do something a little different. Instead of painting the sculpture, town officials want to work with a local graphic designer to “wrap” the sculpture in prints designed to highlight Whitestown’s past and future. Officials plan to place the sculpture at Legacy Core, which will be the trailhead for the new Big 4 trail.

Sprint Triathlon to benefit Rotary

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Rotary Club members are optimistic they have found an annual fundraising event. fundraiser The inaugural Zionsville Sprint Triathlon will begin at 8 a.m. Sept. 18. The race will begin and end at Zionsville Community High School and consist of a 200-yard swim, 11-mile bike race and 5K trail run.

“In the past, we’ve hired speakers to come in. We’ve had Brad Stevens and Dan Dakich come in. Trying to coordinate those schedules is tough,” Rotary Club member Roger Oberweiser said. “We thought if we had a signature event we could hold every year at the same time, it would be something we could set our watches to and knew it would be happening every year.”

After forming a nine-person committee, Oberweiser became the event director of the USA Triathlon-sanctioned event. Oberweiser said there are more than 50 participants registered so far and the goal is to have 75 to 100.

Loren Long, co-founder and president of the Zionsville Triathlon and Cycling Team, has provided guidance, as well.

“It’s one of those things we’ve been talking about for awhile, and it’s good to get it on the schedule,” said Long, who will compete with his wife, Mallory. “A lot of us are excited to have it our own backyard.”

Oberweiser said the club uses funds to help the various causes it is involved with in the Zionsville community.

Participants must be 15 by Dec. 31 to enter.

Bringing order to the library

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Each year when kids return to school, the shelves of the public library are left in disarray. reading To bring order back to the shelves, the youth librarians host a shelf-reading party to put books back in place and to find missing items.

Department Head of Youth Services Jamie Schlenk said summer is the busiest time for library traffic, and therefore the time when much of the disorder occurs.

“It’s the time of year when we have the largest number of kids coming in and finding books for themselves,” Schlenk said.

Volunteers have helped the library staff reorganize the shelves for six years. Although the shelf-reading will take place in one day, volunteers may help for as little as 30 minutes. Shelf markers track where people start and stop throughout the day.

“You’re reading the spine labels,” said Schlenk, noting volunteers should be adults or teens at least 14 years old who can alphabetize.

“Shelf reading is very tedious,” she said.

“You can’t do it for long periods of time.”

The library has a list of missing items, and Schlenk said she enjoys finding those items.

“I’ll think ‘I’ve been looking for this forever’,” she said. “It’s like you’ve won a prize.”

Youth services staff will host the party from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 8, during a time of year when most of the summer reading materials have been returned and most of the fall programming hasn’t begun. All six youth services staff members will be available.

Jim and Melody Price celebrate 50 years Jim and Melody Price of Zionsville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 27.

The couple was married at East Tenth United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and Melody and Jim Price moved to Zionsville in 1979, where they have resided since.

They both love Zionsville, where they raised their three children Jeff (Sherra), Amy and Jason, and where their three grandchildren, Evan, Morgan and Coki, also reside.

They are longtime members of Zionsville United Methodist Church. Jim is retired from Dow Chemical and spent 17 years coaching Zionsville Youth Football. He now enjoys driving both elementary and middle school routes for ZCS. Melody is retired from Chase Bank. She is a former Boone County auditor and works at State Farm Insurance. She is active in a variety of Zionsville organizations, including Rotary International, Boys & Girls Club, Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library, Chamber of Commerce and Boone County Master Gardeners.

A brief history of cappuccino Commentary by Ward Degler Here’s what we know about Marco d’Aviano.

He was born in 1631 in the small Italian town of Aviano, a suburb of Venice. plain talk At the age of 17 he became a Capuchin friar and soon gained a reputation for his fiery preaching.

Somewhere along the line he ministered to a dying woman who miraculously recovered.

This caught the attention of Pope Innocent I, who made the young friar his personal envoy to the Roman Emperor Leopold I in an attempt to fend off the invading Ottoman Turks.

Apparently, his diplomatic prowess, plus his preaching ability and possibly large doses of prayer throughout the campaign, resulted in the demise of the Turks at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. That’s what we know.

What we don’t know for sure involves the friar’s entry into Vienna and his meeting with the vanquished Turks. Legend has it that the Turkish delegate served him a cup of coffee that was so strong and so bitter as to render it undrinkable.

Rather than toss the foul tasting drink into the potted palm, which was probably his first instinct, d’Aviano walked over to the kitchen cupboard and laced the coffee with cream and honey.

This, they say, was the birth of cappuccino, named for the order of friars to which d’Aviano belonged. Another part of the legend says the name cappuccino comes from the light brown color of the friar’s robes.

support this story, and skeptics point out that cappuccino didn’t show up on anyone’s radar until the 1930s in Vienna, where it was a popular mixture of coffee, cinnamon, whipped cream and chocolate.

Cappuccino became popular in the United States during the 1950s as a trendy punctuation to the Beatnik movement in various hole-in-the-wall bistros in Greenwich Village and San Francisco. Soon, hissing espresso machines showed up on the back counters of coffee shops across the country, and cappuccino morphed from honey and whipped cream into sugar and hot milk.

The Cuban community in Key West dotes on a mixture of syrupy black coffee and milk simply blended in a cup without the benefit of espresso equipment. I tried it once while having breakfast at a local Cuban café and thought I was going to crystallize and crumble. I doubt anyone ever gave the Cubans the recipe for real cappuccino.

Meanwhile, cappuccino continues its trendy march among discerning coffee lovers, and Friar d’Aviano was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003, a move which probably had nothing to do with coffee.

As a postscript, despite the setback at Vienna, the Ottoman Empire hung in there until 1918.

Zionsville engineer wins state championship for home concoctions

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Tom Wallbank has been brewing his own beer since the mid-1990s.

“My girlfriend, now wife, bought me a brew kit,” Wallbank said. “It’s nice because if she thinks I’m cover story spending a little too much time on it, I can blame it on her.”

Does she regret it now?

“Oh, probably,” Wallbank said with a laugh.

Fortunately, his wife, Belinda, shares his love of beer, and the Zionsville resident has mastered the craft of homebrewing.

Wallbank captured the Indiana Homebrewer of the Year at the 18th Indiana Brewers Cup, which was held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds last month. It was the second time Wallbank has won the award. He also won in 2012. The contest is part of the Indiana State Fair but held in advance because of space.

Wallbank earned first place in the 2016 competition in the light lager, Belgian sour beer and Belgian strong ale. He placed third in the Czech dark lager. A point system helped him win the overall title.

A national judge, Wallbank said the competition is one of the better-run organizations in the Midwest.

Frequently, he is asked if he plans to start his own brewery.

“To me, it seems like a good way to ruin a perfectly good hobby,” Wallbank said. “It’s a small business, so you are dealing with the public and all the headaches that come with it. Being a brewer, setting aside ownership, isn’t a very glamorous job. In a lot of ways you’re a glorified janitor. It’s a fun industry. But there’s a whole lot of cleaning and sanitizing that goes along with it.”

Fellow beer expert and BeerMBA class teacher Ron Smith of Carmel said Wallbank is well deserving of the award.

“As a beer and brewing educator for many years, I have met a lot of homebrewers,” Smith said. “Tom Wallbank is perhaps the most technical and knowledgeable homebrewer I have ever met. Any decent brewer can win a few awards, but to win

them consistently over a long period of time, that brewer is at a different level.”

Wallbank and his wife took a trip to Belgium through BeerMBA to visit Trappist monasteries, several of which have breweries.

“The monks raise money for their charitable activities through beer,” Wallbank said. “When you taste them over there, they are fresh from the source.”

Some brewers focus on a single style.

Wallbank was born in California but moved to Indiana when he was 15. He graduated from West Noble High School and has a degree in industrial engineering from Purdue. He works for Eli Lilly Co. Wife, Belinda, is a nurse educator at Methodist Hospital.

• Favorite beer: “I believe there is a time and a place for every beer. Out at the Indy 500 on a hot day, you want something fairly light and not too high in alcohol. My favorite depends on time of year, where I am and what I’m eating. I also have a sub-goal of never drinking the same beer twice as long as it doesn’t mean skipping a beer.”

“I have more of a shotgun approach,” Wallbank said. “I probably focus on German lagers and English ales the most, because those are the ones that don’t travel as well. It doesn’t make sense for me to brew an IPA (India pale ale) when you can go to a store or breweries around here and get a very nice IPA.” Belgium sours are another favorite.

Wallbank said it takes approximately five hours to brew a batch of beer.

“My (two) kids are active in soccer, and both play a bass violin,” Wallbank said. “They’re both in scouts. So while many of my friends will brew on weekends, I’m usually doing it on a Wednesday night when there is not as much going on.”

Wallbank usually brews more from December through March when his children have fewer activities.

Wallbank said he has been brewing several different recipes for years, often tweaking the recipes.

There are several reasons he enjoys the hobby.

“You have a lot of art in creating recipes,” Wallbank said.

“You’ve got a lot of science. When I grow my yeast I’m counting them on the microscope, making sure I have the right number.

So there’s science and a fair amount of engineering. I like putting together all this equipment and getting the controllers to talk. I’m an engineer by training and don’t get to use all that hands-on mechanical stuff at work, so this is sort of an outlet.”

Our quadrennial presidential sweepstakes regularly provides textbook studies in contrast. And 2016 raises the bar in disparity.

Red and blue. Left and right. Hot and cold. Up and down. Good and bad. Boy and girl. Pro and con. Loud and soft. Rain or shine. Fish and fowl. Dumb and dumber. Perhaps the only fact that supporters of both major party candidates can agree is that differences between the two do exist. Donald Trump is a Gemini and Hillary Clinton a Scorpio. He’s 70 years old while she doesn’t turn 69 until October. And that relative youth obviously goes a long way in explaining why millennials overwhelmingly favor her. One is a Democrat and the other a demagogue. But this is America, damn it, where yeah, sure, we acknowledge our differences. But this is a nation that also embraces that which binds us together, and the number of bizarre similarities the Donald and the Hillary share is uncanny. Well, they’re not quite mirror images, but considering one is a 5-foot-6 career politician and one is a 6-foot-2 reality TV star, there are enough peas-in-a-pod resemblances to call out the doppelganger police. For instance: righthanders with bulletproof hair; total disdain for truth; unfavorable ratings higher than guard geese downwind of a marijuana field on fire; butchers of the English language; and the list goes on. But finally, each candidate is adamant that if the other is elected on Nov. 8 it will be a disaster not just for the nation, but the hemisphere, the planet, the solar system and the universe. And the two have united millions who believe that on this issue they both may be correct.

Goldfish in a bowl Commentary by Terry Anker In what is perhaps the ideal example of thoughtful resource management, goldfish are known to only grow as much as the appropriately supported capacity of their container. If kept in a cereal bowl on the kitchen counter, the tiny fish will remain just that – a tiny fish. If they find their way into a much larger backyard pond, they might flourish into significantly larger creatures. Do we each find our own level of productivity and stick to it? If not, should we?

Anticipating the coming long winter, these waning weeks of summer have long been an impetus for humans to attend to various maintenance projects around home and hearth. The bit of chipping paint on the kitchen window frame, the broken downspout and the cracked footpath, all, in their own time, get attention, repair and restoration. Even with our own labor, we supplement our lack of experience, necessary tools, interest and motivation by outsourcing work to the skilled trades to finish

our projects.

The sidewalk requires overhaul. The dutiful homeowner requests bids from a shortlist of would-be contractors. Some show up on time to inspect the job. Others arrive late. Others don’t bother at all. Some will provide a quote as promised and with due haste. Others must be prodded into action.

Still others disappear without remark. What is the formula to find a match from beginning to end? Why is it that almost all of us claim a desire to “get” the work, but so many, when actually offered a job, withdraw from attempting the task?

Perhaps, too, I am overly eager to review every opportunity, thinking little of my own physical and intellectual constraints in actually doing it. How does the goldfish decide he is big enough for his bowl?

I love working out in the morning! Getting up early, heading out into the cool, crisp blackness. Entering a humor zen-like stage of meditation where all I hear are shoes slapping the pavement, rhythmic breathing and the quiet seduction of birdsong. Predawn running is what I live for!

Is anybody buying this load of horse manure? Let’s be real: I absolutely despise getting up early to exercise. Who could possibly enjoy such torture when a relatively new king-size mattress and 600-count Egyptian sheets are begging her to stay?

I’m not Forrest Gump! But the alternative is worse, and so I find myself frequently having to endure that 5 a.m. alarm.

And over the years, I have at least learned to appreciate the morning workout.

I’m able to contemplate life, my family and this column without the pushes and pulls of carpool duty, work, the husband and that sexy temptress known as Netflix. It’s just me and my thoughts for 30 to 60-odd minutes, making it the perfect time to ponder my ripped pants debacle at the previous night’s Meet the Teacher and to establish time of death of said pants (anywhere from 2 to 6 p.m.); to consider how unlucky a black cat’s day will be after I cross his path; and to rehash episode five of my new obsession, “Stranger Things” (Nancy, for God’s sake! Why would you go in there?).

Plus, it’s dark, which means I can literally let it all hang out. Shirt twisted and tucked into a skimpy Daisy Duke, hair pinned into a messy top knot, no make-up, stretch marks a-showing . . . I am living the freedom-tobe-middle-age dream. No sun also means no SPF, no visor and no possibility of heat stroke. And if my bratty little cousin Incontinence makes an appearance, who cares?

There is literally no one alive at that godforsaken hour to notice.

Most importantly, the morning workout gets it over and done with, so that I can spend my free time stocking up on excellent nightmare fodder with “Stranger Things.” (Seriously, Nancy! How dumb are you?) Peace out.

Card carrying card carrier Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I have always wanted to collect something no one else in the world collects.

Over the years at Channel 8, humor I interviewed people with odd collections: a man with thousands of different sugar packets, a man with hundreds of mousetraps and one person with a garage full of water sprinklers. Another had 2,500 monkey wrenches. I even did a report on a woman who collects stamps. How weird is that hobby?

It’s kind of dumb if you’re the only person collecting something. There’s no one to brag to and no one to sell it to when you realize how you have been wasting the last 20 years of your life.

At the car wash yesterday, I noticed a great assortment of greeting cards, far funnier than the average Hallmark selection. People need a good laugh when both they and their cars are getting soaked for 20 bucks.

Many of the cards depicted political figures, replete with caricatures and satirical remarks.

They wish you Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary, and Get Well Soon, and there is even a Happy Bar Mitzvah card from “Uncle Bernie,” including a slot for a huge check.

When I got home, I went online to find out how far back the idea of funny political greeting cards went. I wanted to research a little of their history, but I found nothing.

Certainly a political cartoonist would know, so I called one. “Drawing a blank, Dick. And that’s not something most cartoonists will admit to.”

I called a political science professor at IU. “Sorry, I never thought about it, Mr. Wolfsie.

Actually, I believe I can safely say no one has ever thought about it.”

Had I found something that no one else collected? How cool is that?

I now have 25 different politically themed greeting cards, including seven featuring Donald Trump. So now I’m thinking of starting a club, and maybe creating a website or publishing a monthly newsletter about political cards.

And why not? It’s great. I have to be honest with you: I may have the largest collection in the world. Believe me.

NICU reunion special to staff, families

The neonatal intensive care unit at St.Vincent Indianapolis has a special place in Kathy Shreve’s heart. hospital Shreve’s son, Andrew, who was born at 26 weeks gestation, was in the NICU for nearly four months.

He is now 7 1/2 years old and a second grader at Towne Meadow Elementary in Carmel.

“He’s had a lot of challenges and therapy, but he’s overcome them one thing at a time,” Shreve said. “He’s doing well in school. He has nice friends and he’s really smart. He’s getting there.”

Shreve’s son, Elliott, 5, was born at 35 weeks and spent a week in the Continuing Care Nursery.

So Kathy and Ryan Shreve and their sons made their yearly trek from Carmel to the 18th annual St.Vincent NICU/CCN Reunion Aug. 20 at Lions Park in Zionsville. The event was for families from both St.Vincent Indianapolis and Carmel hospitals. The reunion featured bounce houses, face painting, carnival games and pony rides.

“We’ve come every year,” Shreve said of the reunion. “We missed one year when we drove because it was storming bad.”

Rain didn’t deter the family this year. “(Andrew) has got a few friends that he sees here every year. Three of them are triplets he goes to school with,” Shreve said. “It’s fun to come back and see the doctors. We don’t always find the same nurses.”

Shreve said every year the doctors can see how far Andrew has progressed.

Ariel Rudd, a St.Vincent Indianapolis NICU nurse who dressed up as Wonder Woman, said the event drew approximately 3,500 in 2015. However, the crowd was smaller this

year because of rain.

Dr. Shaun Hicks, a neonatologist at St.Vincent NICU, said the event is like their Super Bowl.

“We get to reunite with families,” Hicks said.

“We connect with families with babies who might not have made it without the specialized care we can provide for them. We’re happy to see families and how well they’re doing, and they’re happy to see us. We’ve built relationships with families that last a lifetime.”

Duo finds a soapy solution

When Lindsay Reid began creating homemade soaps, her goal was to make something that would help her daughter, new biz Hope, deal with allergies and skin problems.

Now, her soaps have turned into a motherdaughter business, Hope Soaps, available at the Whitestown Farmer’s Market, online and at the Zionsville Fall Festival.

Diagnosed with sensory processing disorder, six-year-old Hope feels “off-balance unless she’s engaging her senses,” Reid said. Creating the soaps with her mom has become one way for Hope to involve a variety of senses.

“With sensory processing it’s really great for her, because you create most of the smells, and she loves that,” Reid said.

Another therapy is horseback riding, which Hope began three years ago in Zionsville.

Hope loves her equine friends and wanted to provide them with food and treats. A friend encouraged Reid to sell the soaps they were making, and Hope decided to earmark 10 percent of the proceeds for the horses.

“It’s a great avenue for her to really use the sensory issues and help the horses, too,” Reid said.

Hope helps mix and stir the soaps and develop new scents. Her favorites are citrus smells, but she said that she’s recently grown fond of the new chai scent.

Generally, 10 of the scents are permanent, and another five are seasonal or temporary.

“It’s whatever Hope has been feeling for the scent,” Reid said. “We develop it and see if people like it. It’s a blessing to be able to find something that she enjoys and also show her that she can make a difference.”

Former school to become brewery

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com Whitestown’s former high school will soon be home to the Moontown Brewing Company.

The historic building that was new biz once filled with students from 1914 to 1963 is now dilapidated, the windows busted out.

But commercial builder and craft brewer Pete Mattingly saw the potential in the space and knew he’d found the perfect location for the brewpub he and his home brewing partners had dreamed of opening for more than 10 years.

“We will rehab the beautiful round windows and the gym floor where the Whitestown Panthers played,” Mattingly said. “We want to preserve the old gym’s look and feel as much as possible. We’ve even talked about creating a new ‘Panther Brew’ to honor the building’s past as we celebrate its future.”

The Moontown Brewing Company will feature six house brews along with four to six seasonal offerings. The restaurant will offer locally sourced food in a “casual, friendly environment.” The owners also plan to use part of the 10,000 square-foot building as a concert and event venue in the future.

he believes the new brewpub, which will be steps away from the new Big 4 Trail, will help draw people to Whitestown’s Legacy Core and help spur revitalization in the town’s historic district.

“Our Legacy Core is on the verge of becoming a vibrant destination once again like it was when the railroad ran through town,” Norton said. “Entrepreneurs are already seeing the potential in that area, and we believe the Big 4 Trail and Moontown Brewing Company are two big puzzle pieces that will transform that area faster, while also bringing an artsy, trendy vibe that our residents will really enjoy.”

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com DK Pierce & Associates broke ground on its new headquarters in Creekside Corporate Park Aug. 23 before a relocation crowd of employees and Zionsville officials. The two-story building with a walk-out basement is expected to be complete by May 2017.

The nearly 18,000 square-foot facility will house approximately 50 employees, with 23 new jobs doubling the number of current employees. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation has offered DK Pierce up to $275,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $50,000 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans.

DK Pierce & Associates is officially the first tenant of Creekside Corporate Park, according to town officials.

“It has been my goal to create a nurturing work environment for my employees, and Zionsville’s Creekside Corporate Park offers the perfect solution,” said Denise Pierce, president of DK Pierce.

Fourteen parcels have been platted in the corporate setting with a planned 38 percent of the property reserved as woodlands. A path will eventually connect the area with Main Street.

Daimler Trucks North America announced Aug. 24 that it will expand to All Points at Anson in Whitestown. The 283,500-square-foot distribution center will add an new biz anticipated 45 jobs.

The expansion is the company’s first in the Midwest. Construction will begin in October with completion expected sometime in 2017.

“They had a void in the Midwest,” said Molly Whitehead, executive director of the Boone County Economic Development Corporation.

“That was why this area was appealing.”

Daimler Trucks, headquartered in Portland, Ore., is a heavy-duty truck manufacturer that produces and markets commercial vehicles under the Freightliner, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses nameplates. Company officials anticipate the new facility will process 7,000 new truck parts daily.

Four to explore ‘Menopause’

By Zach Dunkin • editorial@youarecurrent.com In “Menopause, the Musical,” four women meet by chance at a department store lingerie sale and proceed to theater make fun of their irritating hot flashes, forgetfulness, mood swings, wrinkles, night sweats, sex drives and chocolate binges. A sisterhood is created among this diverse group of women – and the audience.

“Chemistry is so imporant,” said New Yorker Seth Greenleaf, who has directed more than 100 productions of the musical. “The chemistry is written into the show and the characters, but it’s always better when played by performers who really bond and know how to let the audience in on that bonding.

“We think of the audience as the fifth girlfriend, and when the actors are having fun, the audience can feel it.”

In fact, Greenleaf says audience reaction is his favorite part.

“There are very few experiences in the theater as particular and wild as audiences reacting to this show,” said Greenleaf, a Tony Award-winning producer who works mostly on Broadway. “There are so many tears of laughter in it. I call it the biggest little show in

Hearty Quinoa Salad with Grapes and White Beans Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Servings: 12 Quinoa: • 2 cups (12 ounces) quinoa • 2 cups vegetable stock • 2 cups water Lemon pepper dressing: • 1/2 cup white wine vinegar • 1/2 cup lemon juice • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 clove garlic • 1 1/2 tablespoons honey • 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon peel, grated • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper Salad: • 4 cups California grapes • 2 cups Chinese pea pods, cut in 1-inch pieces • 2 cups canned small white beans, drained • 1 cup diced celery • 1/4 cup minced cilantro • 1/4 cup Anaheim peppers, chopped • 12 lettuce leaves Directions: Rinse and drain quinoa. In large saucepan, combine with broth and water.

Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer 10-15 minutes. Drain any remaining liquid.

To prepare dressing, combine vinegar, lemon juice, oil, garlic, honey, lemon peel, salt and pepper; mix well. Add 1/2 cup of dressing

Add grapes, pea pods, white beans, celery, cilantro and peppers to quinoa and mix well.

Food safety begins at home Commentary by Joe Drozda and Bob Bley Once again it is important to make a few points about food safety. We don’t want our tailgaters to become part of the group of nearly three milliom estimated by the Mayo Clinic who fall prey to food poisoning. Some can make you sick for a long time, and others can even kill. Every year we post some simple rules that can be easily found online by typing “food poisoning” into a search engine. Here are some simplified rules we follow: • Prepare foods at home – Your kitchen tends to be a lot more sanitary than your tailgate party. Prepare as much as possible at home so that preparation at your tailgate is only grilling/cooking.

• Keep things clean – Wash hands, surfaces and utensils frequently and have hand sanitizer for all to use.

• Separate, don’t contaminate – Don’t mix uncooked foods during preparation.

Meats have contaminates that can be cooked away, but not vegetables that have come in contact with the surface used to cut meat.

• Cook all foods to the proper temperature – To kill bacteria. Meat temperature charts are available online or on our web site at http://tailgatershandbook.com/ Tailgating101/foodsafety.html.

• Keep cold foods (especially meats) cold – This means you need a separate cooler for foods and a separate one for drinks.

Here’s a great recipe for a pasta salad that all your guests will love. It is a safer recipe because you keep the food in a serving container at the bottom of your food cooler until you serve it.

Pasta Salad Ingredients: One package of ranch party dip (chip dip, not salad dressing), One cup of sour cream, One cup of milk, One pound of your favorite spiral pasta, Three cups assorted veggies (we like green peppers, radishes, onions, celery, red peppers, etc.), One cup of large, pitted olives, 1/4 cup crisp chopped bacon pieces Preparation: Prepare the party dip per directions with a wire whisk. Let the mixture thicken in the refrigerator.

Cook the pasta, al dente and then drain it in a colander. Using a large plastic re-sealable container, add the pasta and chopped veggies and bacon. Chill the mixture in the sealed container in the fridge. On game day, mix in the party dip and put the container into the bottom of your cooler/ice chest.

After solutions: The goal was to give this family a functional, lively space to play, relax, and entertain.

1. The addition of a fully functional bar with standard kitchen appliances and both drink and food prep areas made this an entertainment hub for the adults. Bar stool seating makes it easy for friends to gather in one place.

2. Barn doors were used to separate the play area from the rest of the basement. This allowed for option of dedicated spaces for adults and children, or one open space for everyone to enjoy.

3. A fireplace was added in the main lounge area of the basement. This gave the basement a calming atmosphere to relax after a long day.

4. There are two areas of this basement dedicated to media entertainment. One is at the bar and the other is in the lounge area by the fireplace.

This gives these homeowners the option of watching a football game at the bar with friends, or a movie as a family on the couch.

Before Background info: The owners of this home in Zionsville’s The Willows neighborhood were looking to remodel their basic builder-grade basement. “Basic” did not fit the life of this family , so our main goal was to give this basement some personality.

Before problems: The No. 1 issue with this basement was underutilized space. There was nothing technically wrong with the basement but the family wasn’t using it, and wasted space is a problem.

They also needed separate spaces for both the parents and children, zoning off the basement for specific functions.

Divorce – Back To School: Controlled Expenses vs. Extraordinary Expenses In Indiana in any Dissolution of Marriage, Post-Dissolution, or Paternity action, the court will enter a child support obligation to be paid by one of the parties, (typically the noncustodial parent). The Indiana Child Support Guidelines are presumed to be applicable in every such proceeding and govern the payment and determination of child support. The Indiana Child Support Guidelines are based on the assumption the child(ren) lived in one (1) household with primary physical custody to the parent who undertakes all of the spending on behalf of the child(ren); therefore, that parent controls the children’s expenses.

the parent that does not get the parenting time credit (i.e., the “custodial parent”). If parents decide to share physical custody, one parent will be responsible to pay the controlled expenses.

What are controlled Expenses? Controlled expenses for the child(ren) are not those commonly transferred or duplicated between households.

Typically, controlled expenses are items like clothing, educational (e.g., school uniforms, books and supplies), ordinary uninsured healthcare expenses, and personal care. While there is no exhaustive list, just remember that the controlled expenses are those fixed expenses of the parent who has primary physical custody and are included in the Guideline child support schedules.

Who pays these costs? In any matter where child support is exchanged between parents, the support recipient is responsible for the child(ren)’s “controlled expenses.” For example, the custodial parent buys the backpack for the child(ren) and, as such, the noncustodial parent will not buy a separate one. Thereby, the custodial parent controls this type of expense. According to the Guidelines, the controlled expenses account for 15% of the cost of raising the child(ren). The other expenses are based on the amount of time each parent shares with the child(ren). As such, the more time both parents spend with the child(ren), the more expenses are duplicated or “shared” under the support calculation through the parenting time credit. When both parents agree that the child(ren) should participate in an optional activity, generally parents either split the expenses equally or pay their pro-rata share based on the income percentage calculated using the child support worksheet. If the parents are unable to reach an agreement on how to divide these expenses, the Court will generally assign responsibility for such costs by considering the following factors: the parent’s ability to pay, which parent is encouraging the activity, whether the child(ren) has/have historically participated in the activity, and the reasons a parent encourages or opposes participation in the activity.

In reality, it is not uncommon for disagreements to occur regarding controlled expenses and extraordinary expenses. If you find yourself in such a situation, you would be well advised to seek the advice of counsel to help find resolution to the issue at hand.

What are Extraordinary Expenses? When calculating child support, the Guidelines do not include components to address the child(ren)’s activities that would be considered “optional” in nature or activities not required by the child(ren)’s school. These expenses are generally related to summer camps, athletics, sports leagues, scouting, band, choir, additional tutoring, and similar expenses.

The library of Ephesus Commentary by Don Knebel Ephesus, a port on the Ionian coast, was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire. Its beautiful library now anchors one of Turkey’s most popular travel destinations.

In the second century, Ephesus was the capital of the Roman province of Asia. In about 115 A.D., Gaius Julius Aquila, a Roman consul, began building a library in Ephesus in honor of his father, Celsus Polemeanus, the governor of the province.The building was funded by the personal fortune of either Celsus or his son. When completed, the library rivaled the more famous libraries in Alexandria and Pergamum.

The elaborate façade of the Ephesus library recalled the area behind the stage of Greek theatres, respecting Celsus’ Greek background. Four pairs of Corinthian columns flanked three doors. Windows above the doors faced the morning sun, encouraging library users to rise early. The columns on the façade’s corners were shorter than those in the center, reportedly to create the illusion of a larger

building. Niches between the columns held female statues representing wisdom, virtue, insight and knowledge, qualities associated with Celsus. Up to 12,000 scrolls were stored in niches along the interior walls, with double walls protecting the scrolls from the elements. The body of Celsus was interred in a marble sarcophagus beneath the main floor.

The interior of the library and its collection of scrolls were destroyed in 262, either during an attack by Goths or by an earthquake. In the fourth century, the building, its original façade repaired, was repurposed as a nymphaeum.

The façade was later destroyed, and the building lay in ruins until the 1970s, when the façade and portions of the interior were reconstructed from the rubble. During excavations, the tomb of Celsus was rediscovered, where his body had lain undisturbed for 18 centuries and where it still remains.
