ZPC approves The Cove rezoning

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Developers of a proposed 24-home neighborhood hope to dig their way out of a drainage problem – literally.

The Cove, planned on development 13 acres at 410 S. 4th St. and 500 S. Main St., is in a floodplain, but developers plan to use dirt removed from expanding an existing pond to raise the ground two to three feet at the site of the proposed vertical-style homes, reducing their risk of flooding. They also plan to improve drainage infrastructure they say will benefit the area.

At the Aug. 21 Zionsville Plan Commission meeting, nearby residents said flooding has long been a problem in the neighborhood.

“This area has completely flooded a few times in the seven years I’ve lived in my house,” said Maria Finnell, who lives just west of the proposed development. “I’ve had fish in my back yard, and two of my neighbors have had to tear down their houses.”

Drainage issues were among several concerns related to the project discussed at the meeting. Commissioners narrowly voted to rezone the property from Urban Residential Village and Urban Residential Single Family Zoning to a planned unit development.

Commissioner Larry Jones joined Sharon Walker and Frank McClelland in voting against the rezoning. He expressed concerns about the high lot coverage percentage and the plan to locate utilities underneath private roads planned for the development.

“I get reluctant to allow our PUD ordinance to be used for this, because we all wish you success, but if it doesn’t (succeed) it puts the Town of Zionsville in a very difficult situation, both with this project and others that come in front of us,” he said.

“That would be my problem,” he said. “We are taking and making a huge investment and a huge bet that this type of high-quality home and style of home is not available today in Zionsville, certainly not in a location that’s walkable to the Village.”

Price said the homes, which would be built by Carmel-based Sigma Builders, would be 1,900 to 2,300 square feet and sell for $450,000 to $500,000. They are targeted at families without children, as the development will include several acres of forested land but little open space and minimal yards. The three- and four-story homes are designed so that an elevator could retroactively be installed in closet spaces for those who don’t want to walk up and down stairs.

The site is currently home to one house and the Zionsville Trailer Park, which includes nine mobile homes. Current residents have been told they will have 120 days’ notice before they are required to leave the property.

Tutors needed — The United Way is seeking volunteer tutors for its ReadUP program. Tutors will work about four hours a month helping third graders at Hattie B. Tails on the Trails returns

By Dawn Pearson news@currentzionsville.com Any dog owner knows a good walk produces a wagging tail. But the benefits will go beyond that in Zionsville when pets Tails on the Trails returns.

The Zionsville Parks Dept.’s annual program runs from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31 and provides an opportunity for dog owners and their canines to get some exercise and socialize.

Participants must complete six walks on Zionsville trails and submit a completed form for a chance to win a weekly wag bag drawing. The parks department would like participants to share their experiences and photos on social media using #tailsonthetrails.

Mindy Murdock, park naturalist and Zionsville Nature Center manager, is coordinating the event and will participate with her dog, Zoey.

“I see a lot of people walking their dogs in the Zionsville parks, and everyone has that familiar park they walk in,” Murdock said.

“This is a way to encourage our community to get outside, enjoy nature in autumn and explore new parks. Perhaps they’ll find one that will become their new favorite.”

County to read bestseller

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com This year’s United We Read book is rather different than recent selections of lesserknown novels with male library protagonists.

The female-centric bestseller “Hidden Figures” by Margot Lee Shetterly was chosen by librarians from Thorntown, Lebanon and Zionsville to be read during October throughout the county.

“Hidden Figures” follows the true stories of four African-American women navigating their NASA careers during the 1960s.

The book was made into a movie in 2016.

Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library librarian Orton Ortwein said the book was chosen despite its popularity.

“We like to pick books that are not necessarily obscure but not runaway bestsellers,” he said, noting programming opportunities and the appeal to various ages

The committee is restricted to selecting books available in multiple formats, such as large print, digital and paperback.

“There’s a lot of great books we would have loved to pick,” Ortwein said. “There’s only so many books that would have hit all those (formats).”

4th brother becomes Eagle Scout

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com At the Court of Honor ceremony Aug. 13, Mark Badger was honored with the rank of Eagle Scout, the achievement highest advancement given by the Boy Scouts of America. He is the youngest of four brothers, all of whom are Eagle Scouts.

It was the first time in Troop 358’s history that four brothers achieved the rank.

“It was awesome,” Mark said. “I can’t believe how cool it was to be with my brothers, standing in front of my parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends. It made me so proud to have joined my brothers in this honor.”

Mark had to achieve six ranks, earn 21 merit badges and organize and complete a service project before he turned 18 to reach Eagle Scout status.

For his service project, Mark built room partitions with storage space for the Life Skills classroom at Zionsville Community

High School. The classroom provides students with disabilities a place to receive extra help from peer volunteers. It is one large classroom, so the partitions define specific learning spaces and provide storage for each student’s materials.

“I wanted to give back to a class that helped me during middle school,” Mark said.

For reaching Eagle Scout rank, all four brothers received a sword of their choosing to represent their personality.

“I was looking for any kind of bribe to keep them motivated,” said Jim Badger, Mark’s father. “We used the symbolism of the sword of the spirit.”

Jim was an Eagle Scout and wanted his children to have that same experience, so all four boys joined the Scouts at a young age.

“My dad was in the military, so we traveled around a lot and (Boy Scouts) was the one consistent thing I had,” Jim said.

Jim and his wife were advancements cochairs of Troop 358 for more than a decade.

They have retired now that their kids have completed the program.

TherAplay horses honored for 25 years of service

By Dawn Pearson news@currentzionsville.com Therapy horses Gideon and FairyTale of The Children’s TherAplay Foundation in west Carmel have a lot fundraiser to trot about.

The horses have 25 years of combined service, 15 and 10 years, respectively, serving children of central Indiana with more than 13,500 equineassisted physical and occupational therapy treatments. The treatment is called hippotherapy, and with the help of therapy horses it “is changing lives for children with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy, spina bifida, traumatic brain injury, autism spectrum disorders and Down syndrome,” said Hillary McCarley, executive director of Children’s TherAplay.

The two horses were honored at The Show and Tail Lunch and Fundraiser Aug. 10. The event included lunch and therapy treatment demonstrations with two of the children, Stryder Wickman, 5, and Charlotte Hibert, 3, who receive treatments.

The event also included a letter from the Mayor’s Office and a ribbon cutting for the new stables.

Most children love horse rides, but for the children who attend Children’s TherAplay, the therapy rides that Gideon and FairyTale provide can change lives.

Stryder was born with spina bifida, his mother Becca said.

“Because of Children’s TherAplay, Stryder has been taking his first independent steps, and to be perfectly honest, (his father and I) didn’t think this may happen,” Becca said. “It’s amazing what these horses do, and it can’t be replicated in other

therapy. It builds up his core, and he can’t wait to go to therapy.”

At the luncheon, Children’s TherAplay founder William Craig Dobbs outlined the costs of therapy and the deficits the foundation faces.

“Each hour of treatment costs Children’s TherAplay $225, but the average insurance reimbursement is only $92. Funds raised through #Horsepower500 (fundraising event) help close the $133 per-treatment gap, ensuring that these children continue to have access to these life-changing therapies so families can afford it as well,” he said.

Salem UMC’s new pastor at home at the ‘Friendly Country Church’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Pastor Gina Kirkland had a way of putting Zionsville’s Salem United Methodist Church members at ease right away.

“My first sermon I told them I realcover story ized I did not look like them,” Kirkland said. “They said they thought, ‘She was going to go to the race card.’ I said, ‘No, I’m really short.’”

The 4-foot-10 Kirkland, who prefers to be called Pastor Gina, joined Salem UMC as an interim pastor in March and accepted the role full-time in July.

“As an African-American woman landing in a small traditional country church, in an area that is 94 percent white, one might expect a little less than 100 percent acceptance, but not so with this woman,” said Tim Ottinger, a lifelong member of Salem UMC. “Once you meet Pastor Gina, you can’t help but embrace the love and compassion she has in her work and for humanity, without an ounce of bias. To us, she is the living epitome of Matthew 22:38, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Kirkland, 60, said of her 22 years of pastoral experience, 20 have been with predominantly white congregations.

“God has given my husband and I this chameleon-like gift so people don’t see us as black or African-American.

They just see us as Gina and Reggie,” she said.

Kirkland said the church lives up to its moniker as “The Friendly Country Church.”

“They are loving people,” Kirkland said.

The congregation has grown from 60 in March to approximately 90 for its single Sunday service at 9:15 a.m.

If it keeps growing, the church will likely add an 11 a.m. service. The capacity is 155 for the church, which was founded in 1834. The church moved to its current building at S. 775 E. in 1914.

Kirkland said the congregation is very laity-driven.

“They’re so organized and get the job done,” Kirkland said.

After being laid off as a critical care nurse, Kirkland pursued other careers. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1993. She could move her upper body but had great difficulty putting weight on her legs before attending a youth church service after returning home to visit family in November 1995.

“It was divine healing,” Kirkland said. “A pastor told me that I needed to lean on Jesus and accept the call to the ministry, and I did. At this point, I got my legs back because I was in a wheelchair for three years.”

evidence of MS. She then began her path to becoming a pastor and became ordained in 1999.

Kirkland took a break from pastoral duties for several months to help her husband, Reggie, 72, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s three years ago.

“For a while, he got really bad,” Kirkland said. “In order to get assistance with care, you have to show you are the only one doing it. It doesn’t make sense to me, but I needed to step away from my ministry for a while to take care of him. Now we have a lot of things in place. I’m going to keep him at home as long as I’m able to handle him.

When things get too much and I can’t physically handle him, we’ve already picked out a memory center.”

Kirkland said some days are better than others for Reggie.

“It fluctuates between his physical ability and his cognitive ability,” she said.

Kirkland, a 1975 Anderson High School salutatorian, was previously a pastor at New Horizons UMC in Anderson and two other Methodist churches after moving back to Anderson eight years ago.

Kirkland, who commutes to Zionsville two to three days a week, said Salem had been used to having part-time pastors.

“I wanted to continue with my ministry, because I was like a duck out of water,” she said. “God fixed it so we merged together, and it’s a seriously win-win situation.

The 1980 Ball State University graduate worked as a critical care nurse at Ball Memorial Hospital for several years. Husband Reggie, who has a doctorate, is a retired Veterans Affairs hospital administrator in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. They married nearly 17 years ago. Has two birth children, Cory Clemmons, 39, and Danny Clemmons, 35. Cory and his family live in Noblesville, and Danny is in a band in Florida. Her adopted children are daughter Ashley Johnson and sons Dexter Johnson and Randi Kirkland. She has a stepson, Mark Kirkland, and stepdaughter, Marquay Toney. Kirkland saw her weight shrink from 240 pounds to 130 after having gastric bypass surgery in 2012. “I have no more high blood pressure, no more diabetes, no more high cholesterol and no more hip and knee pain that I was having because of the weight,” Kirkland said.

Although television, films and the 24hour news cycle, populated by ubiquitous talking heads, might be flattening it a bit, we Americans can still enjoy some nice regional dialects. Brooklyn and Boston each have their own. New Orleans, the Midwest and the valleys of Los Angeles all have unique expressions and pitch. But among the favorites must be the eccentric and entertaining idioms of the great state of Texas. With a sure-fire twang and dead-eyed pithiness, our friends to the southwest get, grinning, to the heart of the matter.

If one is said to have a big hat, no cattle, it notes that the object of assessment is likely pretending to be of greater import than its actual holdings might support.

Another personal favorite is that hapless soul who is always fixing to get ready. We all know folks who make it their business to be in a constant state of planning. One might imagine that planning is good. Yes. Yet some of us spend so much of our lives preparing that we fail to reserve any time for the doing!

When is the preparation to end and the executing to begin? If we move too fast, we are rash and lack forethought. Still, if we move too slowly, we fall into a near endless loop of self-reinforcing insecurity.

As a young man, I asked a wise, elderly neighbor when was the best time to trim an overgrown shrub. The man responded by asking me if I had a sharp pair of clippers. He made a good point. Shouldn’t we have our tools ready (education, capital and relationships) so that we are set whenever an obstacle and the time to address it presents?

Last week, I was using the girls’ bathroom at the high school where I teach, and when I flushed, my keys and humor ID badge fell into the toilet.

Suddenly aware of time epically slowing down, I plunged my longsleeve-shirted arm into the tainted water in a futile attempt to rescue them. Alas, the entire set-up was gone before I could even scream “NOOOOOOOO!” I then immediately relayed the story to everyone I saw. First, the three horrified juniors standing outside my stall, who’d heard everything but had no context. Then to my posse of teacher friends, chatting in the hallway. And finally, to my seventh-period class, who’d listen to anything if it meant a postponement of actual history stuff.

I assumed I’d be met with laughter and possible wishes for good luck as I navigated administration hell to obtain new credentials. But without exception, their expressions ranged from shock to disgust.

Why? Because I’d willingly stuck my hand into a bowl full of urine.

Look, people. I’m a mom. I’ve probably changed close to a million diapers, cleaned up enough to own a hazmat suit and continue to consistently “lose control” whenever I run, laugh or sneeze. Last month, when I had to scrub the basement toilet after it had been clogged for something like 13 days. I literally didn’t flinch. I’ve seen worse.

I acted on instinct, honed by years in the field of motherhood. My only thought was, “Save the keys!” But now I’m “that crazy teacher” from the bathroom with highly questionable decision-making skills.

We used to make things Commentary by Ward Degler Someone recently pointed out that shop classes have been virtually deleted from high school curplain talk riculums. That’s sad, because kids no longer learn how to build things. They only know how to buy them.

Considering that America was built by men who used their heads and their hands to design, build and improvise their way through problems, I have to agree.

Mom used to stay home while Dad went to work. She cooked, cleaned, did laundry and mended clothes.

I was thinking about that the other day when I pulled a pair of socks out of my drawer, only to find one of them had a hole in the toe. Back in the dark ages of my youth, that would have spurred my mother to open her sewing basket and break out her darning egg.

When a hole appeared in a shirt or pair of pants, Mom always had patches of the same material she could cut and sew into the hole. There was no shame in wearing jeans with patches in the knees. All the kids had them.

Today, of course, folks pay big bucks for jeans with holes in them. Seriously?

Can someone explain that to me? I just know I was sitting on a fortune before I cleaned out my closet and threw away all my ragged jeans a couple years ago.

Most moms work today. The high cost of new jeans makes it necessary. And the kids are always on the lookout for the newest stuff to buy.

I took wood shop my freshman year in high school and metal shop when I was a junior. I built a magazine rack from a single piece of white pine and stained it with something called French polish. It graced our living room for years.

In metal shop I made a screwdriver. I turned the handle on a lathe from a block of aluminum and fashioned the shaft from tempered steel.

The magazine rack finally fell apart after umpteen years of Life magazine subscriptions being dumped into it. The aluminum screwdriver handle turned my hands black, and I stopped using it after a while. Ultimately, it disappeared.

But the point is, I didn’t buy them, I made them.

Whenever I pick up the newspaper, I find medical news contrary to previously reported findings. humor Now there is some perplexing medical news for me to digest: The sleeping pill I take may not help me get better rest, but may only have an amnesia effect. In other words, I may be up all night tossing and turning, but the next morning I don’t remember having trouble staying asleep. Just what I need: Something else to keep me up all night.

The more I thought about this, the crazier it made me. My pill bottle label said it can cause sleepwalking, so I could be wandering throughout the house, then in the morning not remember anything.

I experienced this in college. Up all night cramming for a test, then not recalling a thing the next morning (and I was drug-free then).

My brother was a sleepwalker. He’d get up and grab a rod and reel from the garage, then walk out the front door at 3 a.m. My mother wanted to call the doctor, but my father said we needed the fish.

I asked my wife if she’s noticed anything

out of the ordinary lately. “Well, we’re always out of cat food,” she responded. That scared me, since I’ve gained a few pounds in the last month. “Also, I’ve noticed in the mornings that your bathroom is spotless. All your pill bottles are back in the cabinet. Your toothpaste tube has its cap on and all the towels are folded. Maybe you are sleepwalking.”

“Mary Ellen, do you really think I walk around the house at night and don’t remember?”

“It’s possible. You don’t remember a lot of things.”

Last night I put sticky notes around the house, so if I started sleepwalking, I could jot down what I did to jog my memory. This morning, I discovered I had gotten into the fridge and polished off the remainder of my wife’s homemade chicken cacciatore.

I’m glad I made a note of that. Sometimes I forget what a good cook she is.

Plans for three parcels along Sycamore Street were put on hold once again Aug. 22 when the development Zionsville Plan Commission voted 4-3 to table a decision on rezoning the land.

Attorney Roger Burrus, representing land owner Barbara Hanson-Slaff, requested the continuance because his client has been contacted by a party interested in purchasing the 6-acre site at 125, 165 and 235 W. Sycamore Street. He said it’s too early to identify the potential buyers of the site that he described as “the poster child” of “non-development,” but he expects them to come forward with a development plan soon.

“They hit the ground running,” Burrus said. “They’ve had meetings with town staff and with other interested parties, so I do think at some point in the not-toodistant future they will be coming with a proposal to show you.”

District after several plans for the site in recent years fell through. Most recently, the council rejected plans for a mixed-use development known as 200 West.

Zionsville Director of Planning Wayne Delong said the site has had a “fair number of suitors” in recent years, and that a plan has been proposed “on a yearly basis, at minimum.”

VBD zoning is more restrictive than B-2 and B-3. It allows commercial development but bans certain uses, such as heavy manufacturing. Building heights also are more restricted with VBD zoning.

Plan commissioners were split on the benefit of delaying a vote on the rezoning. Commissioner Frank McClelland said it would be “an administrative hassle” to rezone a property for which a potential buyer had been making plans.

Commissioner Larry Jones agreed.

“I would prefer to sit and let that happen rather than force an arbitrary change on a piece of property just because we feel the need,” Jones said.

ZPC President David Franz voted against the continuance. He said he didn’t think it made much of a difference if the site kept its zoning or received VBD zoning if the developers were likely going to submit a proposal for a planned unit development, anyway, that would require commission approval.

Members of the Village Residents Association, who have met with previous developers interested in the site, said they had not heard before the meeting that a new potential buyer had stepped forward.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard, by proclamation last week, declared Sept. 23-24 “Carmel International Arts Festival Celebration of the Arts” in recognition of the event’s 20th anniversary.

The proclamation states, “The Carmel International Arts Festival celebrates 20 years working to educate and create an understanding and appreciation for the value of art in the home, the school, the community, and the world.”

Next month’s festival will feature more artists and food vendors than in years past as well as local favorites and new faces for the entertainment stage. The focal point is Art Rocks, a free public concert by The Bishops from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sept. 23 in celebration of the milestone.

The festival, on Main Street and Range Line Road, runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 23 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 24. Admission and parking are free.

Ingredients: 4 cups crushed graham crackers, 2 cups powdered sugar, 1 cup peanut butter, 1 cup melted margarine or butter, 1 cup melted chocolate chips Directions: Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or the microwave. Be sure to keep any and all water from the chocolate.

In a bowl, mix grahams, sugar and peanut butter. Add the melted margarine and press the mixture into an ungreased 9-by-13 baking pan. Top with the melted chocolate.

Cool and cut into bars 12 bars. These taste like peanut butter cups, only better.

Background Info: This 1960s home in the Sylvan Ridge neighborhood in northern Indianapolis was a perfect space for the owners to grow with their young family.

The original kitchen, however, was closed off from their living space.

The goal was to create an open-concept kitchen that blended with the adjoining spaces and increase overall functionality so the owners could grow with their family!

1. The largest modification included removing the wall between the kitchen and the living room and replacing it with bar seating for the kids.

2. The next significant change was removing the bulkheads, making the height of the ceiling flush with the connecting spaces.

3. Additional changes included removing the peninsula that divided the kitchen from the bay window. This allowed a contrasting island with a single-bowl sink and a microwave drawer.

4. The addition of a pull-out snack pantry and spice accessories allowed for more efficient storage.

Before problems: The previous kitchen was confined by a wall and two small doorways dividing the area from the remainder of the lower level, making the space appear small. Additionally, the bulkheads made the ceilings appear lower and broken up. The kitchen still had its original cabinets, which lacked appeal and functionality.

If you suspect your child may have a learning disability or behavior problem, it’s a good idea to have him evaluated by a psychologist who specializes in educational evaluations. There are generally three basic types of evaluations: an initial evaluation to determine a child's eligibility for special education, a re-evaluation of a child who has already undergone an initial evaluation and an independent evaluation.

Federal law requires school districts to identify, locate and evaluate students with disabilities which adversely affect their education. If you suspect your child has a disability, ask his school for an initial evaluation.

Always put your request in writing. Even if you talk to the teacher in person or on the phone and she agrees to set it up, I have parents send an email to the teacher and copy 2-3 other school employees, such as the special education director and a counselor or principal, simply confirming the conversation—or just put the request in an email to begin with. This makes it harder for the school to claim that it "never received" your request for an evaluation and is good evidence documenting your request.

The school generally has to provide the evaluation at no cost to the parent, but there are a couple of conditions. First, the parent has to consent to the school psychologist conducting the evaluation. If you request an evaluation and the school agrees to provide it, the school does not have to perform it until you sign a consent form allowing it to do so.

This is an exception to the general advice I give parents: Don’t sign anything. Your child will not be eligible for special education until he has been evaluated, so signing the consent to have the school psychologist evaluate him is an important step toward getting the services he needs.

Sign it!

Second, the school has 50 school days after you sign the consent to complete the evaluation and meet with you to discuss the results. If you wait until the end of the school year to sign the consent, the 50 days do not begin to run until school starts—your request is on “hold” all summer.

For this reason, it's best to sign the consent as early in the school year as possible. If you ask the school for an evaluation and it refuses or you disagree with the school’s evaluation, contact me and I’ll be happy to advise you on your options.

A re-evaluation may be appropriate for a child who hasn't been evaluated recently, especially if his condition changes or he develops a new diagnosis. Under the law, a school only has to "consider" re-evaluation every three years—basically a meaningless requirement. All a school has to do is say "OK--we 'considered' re-evaluating Johnny, so we've complied with the law." This another reason it’s a good idea for parents to ask for an evaluation or re-evaluation.

Another option is an independent educational evaluation, or IEE. This is performed by a private psychologist who is not affiliated with the school district. I prefer these evaluations over school evaluations because the psychologist is not biased in favor of the school and will recommend services based on the child's needs as opposed to the cost to the school district. If you choose an IEE, it’s important to see a psychologist experienced with educational evaluations. The two situations where I generally recommend parents get an IEE are when the child needs an evaluation done sooner than the 50 school days or if the parent disagrees with the school's evaluation. There are certain procedures to follow if you want the school to pay for an IEE, so it’s a good idea to speak with a lawyer familiar with special education law before pursuing this.

Budapest’s dueling memorials Commentary by Don Knebel Americans strolling through Budapest are often surprised to encounter a bronze likeness of Ronald Reagan travel near Hungary’s magnificent Parliament Building. They are even more surprised that he is striding toward a memorial honoring the Soviet Red Army. There is a story here.

In early 1945, Hungary, aligned with Germany during World War II, surrendered to Russian troops and came under the control of the Soviet Union. The Soviets removed statues from Freedom Square, an area southeast of the Parliament Building, and erected a large stone obelisk in the center of the square celebrating the “liberation” of Hungary by the Red Army. Many in Budapest did not see the Red Army as liberators, especially after that army put down an anti-Soviet uprising in 1956.

After the break-up of the Soviet Union, Budapest residents wanted to remove the Red Army memorial, but a treaty guaranteed its continued presence. So they decided to dilute the memorial’s significance with a memorial of their own. In 1996, with funding from a local real estate developer,

residents erected a statue of Imre Nagy, a hero of the 1956 uprising, between the Red Army memorial and the Parliament Building.

Nagy is standing on a bridge, with his back to the memorial and his face toward Parliament, a symbol of Hungarian independence.

In 2010, nationalist politicians demanded the removal of the memorial to the Red Army. Fears of Russian reprisals led to another memorial. In 2011, a 7-foot statue of Ronald Reagan, who had not been in Budapest during his presidency, was erected between the Red Army memorial and the

Parliament Building to recognize President Reagan’s contributions to the collapse of the Soviet Union. A vigorous-looking president stares right through the Red Army memorial toward the United States Embassy on the other side.

Stop! Grammar time.

If you watch “The Bachelor “(which I most definitely do grammar guy not), you probably hear the following phrase ad nauseam during the “confessional” videos: “Topher and I’s relationship is really special. I think he may be the one.”

Then the next girl comes in and says literally the exact same thing.

It seems like the natural thing to say. In “The Bachelor” example, Topher and “I” share a relationship. In order to make Topher possessive (which he totally is, by the way), you would add ‘s. “Topher’s.” Pretty easy.

Now, to make “I” possessive, you actually get rid of it altogether and replace it with “my.” “My” is the possessive form of “I.” So, to correctly speak or write this sentence, you would say, “Topher’s and my relationship is really special.” I know that sounds awkward, but it’s correct. If you want to avoid this awkward linguistic limbo, you can simply say, “Our relationship is really special.”

When you are referring to two or more

people who share the same thing, you only need to add ‘s to the last person listed. So, if you’re a contestant on “The Bachelor,” and you are referring to another girl’s relationship with our boy Topher, you would write/say, “Topher and Krystyn’s relationship makes me want to hurl.” Even though that’s a terrible way to spell Kristen, it’s a grammatically correct sentence.

In the case of multiple owners who have separate ownership, you add ’s to each name. Krystyn and Ashlee each have a different relationship with Topher, so if you were griping about their relationships, you’d say something like, “Krystyn’s and Ashlee’s relationships with Topher make me want to eat my feelings.”

This grammar terminology of compound ownership is called compound, or joint, possession. And while joint possession is still illegal in most states, good grammar is always welcome.
