Plan Commission approves 80-acre rezoning

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com A proposal to rezone 80 acres at 5190 South SR 267 was continued from the July 16 Zionsville Plan Commission DEVELOPMENT meeting and officially went before the Plan Commission Aug. 20, where it was approved.

It will now go before the town council.

The proposal, made by Becknell Services LLC, aims to change the acreage from rural agriculture to light industrial zoning in order to build a large warehouse. The property has a Lebanon address, but is technically part of Zionsville.

The site is at the northeast corner of SR 267 and 550 South. INDOT has planned an interchange at 550 and I-65. Within that area is a mixture of industrial, agricultural and residential zoning. Becknell said at the council meeting that the property is one of the last remaining undeveloped sites within the triangle made of SR 267, 550 South and I-65.

However, the land directly south and west of the property is almost entirely homes and farmland.

Since the original continuance in July, Becknell representatives met with surrounding homeowners and have agreed to create a 50foot buffer yard that includes a 6-foot berm, heavily landscaped with 74 canopy trees, 119 ornamental trees, 220 evergreen trees and 441 shrubs. All operations will be contained within the building.

Ramona Seymour, whose family has owned the property since before 1948, inherited the it from her mother two years ago and said she has had difficulty trying to get it farmed, incentivizing her to sell to developers.

“I appreciate the work Becknell has done to accommodate our issues,” said Julie Rodgers, who lives on 550 South, facing the property. “One thing I am concerned about still is drainage.”

Rodgers described major flooding in her yard that prevents her and her husband from entering their home.

Jamal Khan, another 550 South resident whose property faces the acreage, also described major flooding at his house. The

weight of the water caused his septic tank to burst and caused $25,000 of damage. Khan said the flooding is due to new industrial developments in recent years.

“What used to flow readily into the fields is now just sitting,” Khan said.

Khan also noted that the property could be developed for other purposes.

“I believe the best use for this property, given its geographic proximity to the interstate to 267 and the new 550 interchange, is actually commercial or high density residential,” Khan said.

The plans will go before the Town Council, which meets again at Town Hall Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.

ZCS ranks third in state for excellence

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Community Schools was ranked third in the state for overall excellence by Niche.com, a website that provides report cards, rankings and reviews EDCUATION for colleges and schools across the U.S. The 2019 school rankings are based on a variety of factors, such as academics, health and safety, parent surveys, teachers, sports and diversity. The academics proficiency score

is weighted to be half of the overall grade.

ZCS received A rankings in most categories but fell short in diversity, for which the school received a C-. Minority enrollment at ZCS is estimated to be 12 percent of the student body, significantly less than the state average of 31 percent.

West Lafayette Community School Corp. and Carmel Clay Schools ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively. Hamilton Southeastern School District and Southwest Allen County Schools are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Niche.com also ranked Zionsville teachers as second-best in the state, behind West Lafayette. Zionsville’s average graduation rate is 98 percent with an average SAT score of 1,290 and average ACT of 29. Average reading proficiency in the district is 85 percent and math proficiency is 79 percent.

Boles speaks at luncheon

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Surrounded by parked planes and helicopters, more than 170 people dined together for the second straight year CHAMBER at the Westfield Zionsville Chamber Luncheon.

Tracy Phillips, executive director of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, said the two chambers began collaborating on the luncheon last year because there was so much crossover membership.

“We have many (people) who are members of both chambers,” Phillips said. “There are so many similarities between our chambers, our towns and our schools.”

Indianapolis Executive Airport and First Wing Jet Center hosted the event, opening up one of its hangars for the dining experience. Missy Eastbrook, event coordinator for Westfield Chamber of Commerce, said seating was ample in the large space.

“It was a good chance for people to come out and network in a lunchtime setting,” Eastbrook said. “Lots of people had never been there before and said it was really cool.”

The luncheon featured a prominent keynote speaker, Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles.

“It was the perfect venue for Doug Boles to speak,” Phillips said, noting that Boles is used to the loud noise at the race track. “At one point, a jet went by the open doors of the hangar where we were having lunch.

Doug had to speak a little bit louder and he didn’t miss a beat.”

“As it got louder and louder, he got louder and louder,” Eastbrook said. “It didn’t bother him. He was in his element.”

Boles touched briefly on some IMS history

and spoke about ways to engage a younger audience in the digital era. But his speech focused heavily on applying the concept of the IMS -- how it was founded and what it provides for the city of Indianapolis -- to smaller towns like Zionsville and Westfield.

The IMS founders were businessmen, not racecar drivers. They envisioned the track as a way to showcase Indianapolis and bring people to the city.

Boles commended the chambers for the work they do to improve the quality of life and commerce in their respective communities and challenged the audience to think of new ways to make them great places to live.

Palomino Ballroom, an event center in Zionsville, catered the luncheon. Sundown Gardens, a Westfield garden center, provided table decor.

“The staff at the Westfield Chamber are phenomenal to work with,” Phillips said.

“They are good friends and colleagues.”

Each chamber made a basket of prizes from member businesses. Westfield attendees entered one raffle and Zionsville attendees entered a separate raffle. At the end, the Westfield winner won the Zionsville basket, and the Zionsville winner won the Westfield basket.

“It gets the Zionsville crowd to this neck of the woods and the Westfield people over to Zionsville,” Eastbrook said.

Phillips and Eastbrook agreed that the relationship between the two chambers will continue.

“Business has no boundaries, and this is an opportunity for our members to crosspollinate. That was the genesis of this luncheon,” Phillips said. “I think we’ll keep doing this for a long time.”

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Concerned parents and Zionsville residents gathered at the Zionsville Town Hall community room Aug. 22 for a SAFETY BeSMART gun safety conversation, a talk given by advocacy group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense as part of the Boone County Voices for Change Speaker Series.

The event featured a panel discussion on gun safety in the community, schools and homes with members including Jane Hedeen, Laura Walls and Caley Concannon.

Walls is a primary care pediatrician and a volunteer with Moms Demand Action.

“The emotional impact of school shootings is beyond the impact of our discussion tonight,” Walls said.

Walls presented statistics on gun safety, discussed child access prevention laws and Indiana’s red flag law, which allows officers to remove firearms from anyone deemed dangerous or at imminent risk of self-harm.

Miss Fall Festival pageant open to applicants — The Miss Fall Festival pageant will be at 3 p.m.

Sept. 16 at the Whitestown Municipal Building.

According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Zionsville in July 2018 was $429,503 a price increase of 13.8 percent and the highest price in the area. Homes in the city sold in an average of 39 days, 25 days faster than July last year.

Paul Dreier, chairman of zWORKS, discussed the success of several startups that were housed at zWORKS during formative stages, including GS Sports Ventures, 120 Water Audit, WorkHere and recentlyDreier acquired Boosterville.

“We met a lot of our investors at zWORKS.” Clear Software continues to grow and now has 15 employees.

The demand for startup space is high.

With more than 200 members, zWORKS launched an extension called zWORKS on Pine earlier this year and is already filling the space.

Oil company stays strong through three generations

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com When Taylor Oil Company began servicing Zionsville, the interurban train still ran down Main Street, and COVER STORY Zionsville’s population was slightly more than 1,500, a fraction of what it is today. Members of the Taylor family credit the success of their business, now in its third generation of family employees, to hard work, loyal staff and a strong moral compass.

Doug Taylor, president of Taylor Oil, repeats one phrase so often it has become his mantra.

“You have to treat people the way you want to be treated, whether they’re employees, customers or neighbors,” he said.

Founded by his father Lloyd Taylor, the business began on Main Street in 1948, then moved south to what was then the outskirts of Zionsville.

When Lloyd died in 2014, he left his son Doug, daughter Nancy Thayer and granddaughter Natalie Kruger at the helm of Taylor Oil. In the 70 years since Lloyd Taylor founded the company, it has evolved from supplying home heating oil to a distributor of petroleum and lubricant products.

located in a building that was originally a chicken coop. The building has been expanded several times during the past 70 years to include a restroom, private offices and a conference room. The family donated the southeast quadrant of a 100-foot bridge to the town, now part of the Zionsville Rail Trail.

2008 — A fire caused by a faulty furnace destroyed part of the business.

2014 — Lloyd Taylor died at age 95.

FROM WWII PILOT TO OIL

Lloyd was stationed in California as an Army Air Force pilot during World War II. He was preparing to ship overseas in advance of the June 6 D-Day operation in Normandy.

He wanted to train other pilots, but a lack of demand led him back home to Indiana with his wife, Jane, and infant son, Steve.

Lloyd first began driving an oil truck for the Shell company. On his days off, he also drove for Zionsville’s Shell distributor. When the distributor’s owner died in 1948, Lloyd offered to purchase the business from his widow.

“That’s how we got started,” Doug said.

2006 — Natalie Kruger, who represents the third generation of the Taylor family business, officially began working at Taylor Oil.

The Taylor home, built in 1954, still stands on the Taylor Oil property but is now used for storage.

“He worked 16, 18 hours a day, six days a week my entire life.”

When Taylor Oil began at 145 North Main St., its telephone number was 20. Initially, the business sold and delivered home heating oil, but as furnaces were replaced with the type not requiring specialized oil, Lloyd adapted the business model to include other oils and agricultural lubricants.

During high school, Doug drove a trans-

port truck, shuttling fuel for the business.

During slower summer months, the company transported other materials like pipes.

Today, the company distributes products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, specialty oil and lubricants. Originally, its sole supplier was Shell, but it now receives products from a variety of sources to remain competitive. An on-site gas station serves the police and fire departments and some local residents. Patrons access their account with a pin code, paying at the end of each month.

“She’s next in line,” Doug said. “She’s our hope.”

Growing up with the company is an experience Kruger said is unique in a small community.

“It’s pretty unmatched in today’s world,” she said. “God has given us this little piece of Earth to take care of.”

She is proud of the business’s longevity. “(My grandparents) had no idea how much it would bless multiple generations,” Kruger said.

Two things that worry Doug Taylor are the possibility of a spill or fire.

The latter almost destroyed the business in 2008.

“It was traumatic,” said Taylor, who was returning from an errand when he saw black smoke over Zionsville. “When I came past the (Zionsville) cemetery, I couldn’t swallow.”

Firefighters from four neighboring areas assisted the Zionsville Fire Dept. Foam that would have extinguished the burning petroleum products weren’t available to the ZFD at the time, so the best solution was to simply let the flammable material burn out. “(The firefighters) kept the fire from spreading,” he said.

Taylor Oil had long followed a company policy to keep only one of each kind of transportation vehicle in a building at a time. After the fire, the company resumed operations quickly because it still had equipment.

A faulty furnace was determined to be the fire’s cause. With four generations of Taylors still living in homes on the property, Taylor said it’s rare when someone isn’t keeping an eye on the business.

“We’re extremely diligent,” he said.

Tanks on the property are above ground and gravity-fed, so there is no chance of a spill. Multiple dikes catch spills before they pass too far along the property, surpassing industry requirements, Taylor said.

Commentary by Terry Anker For centuries, sailors have trusted the stars to guide. Alas, the Polaris is often obscured by weather. Then these dutiful mariners count on experience and faith to help them stay the course. As overcast days persist, the risk of drifting off course increases — along with growing anxiety in the ranks.

Teams form and follow direct interface.

Now, with the advent of new technologies, we have become increasingly dependent on the independence provided by them. As seamen rely upon satellites, nearly all of us find modern communication devices imperative. Calls, emails, texts and other services for instant communiqué leave us with both significant freedom and, ironically, its corresponding reduction.

How do we balance the human need for collaboration with our need for autonomy?

Can we spend the bulk of our time away from the office while still mentoring and supporting those we work with daily?

Perhaps the same is true with our relationships, families and communities. Are there times when it is wrong to just phone it in?

Or, do we simply need to find new ways to accommodate for expanding technologies to substitute for face time?

Recently, a community leader shared his frustration that during his extensive travel to build his organization, productivity among his team diminished. One wonders if the young and inexperienced managers might simply be seeking a sighting. Is it possible that a directive by email lacks a required nuance to inspire? Would seeing the boss, even virtually, be enough encouragement? Like sailors waiting for a break in the clouds to show the path, could they be somewhat adrift looking for the sky? We don’t require much but do require some.

READER’S VIEW More research needed on CBD, marijuana Editor, I could not disagree more with Donald Rainwater’s conclusion in a recent letter to Current that “Decriminalization of medical marijuana is a positive step in the efforts to reduce opioid addiction in Indiana.”

This past year I moved to Zionsville from Colorado, where I lived through the legalization process of medical marijuana, which has served as a gateway to recreational use.

Presenting medical marijuana as beneficial was actually a ruse to mislead the public and achieve the unstated objective of legalizing recreational pot. Legalization in Colorado has been an unmitigated disaster, especially as it impacted our teenagers. The 2017 Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Traffic Area Report, a collaboration of federal, state and local drug enforcement agencies, documents Colorado’s results from legalizing marijuana and is available on

the internet.

Concerning the reduction of opioid addiction, I submit America would be better served by supporting legitimate cannabidiol (commonly known as CBD) research.

This will produce the true breakthrough needed for a pharmaceutical alternative to opioids.

There are already clinical trials that show promise without the detrimental THC mindaltering aspects of marijuana. Both the American Psychological Association and the American College of Pediatricians have endorsed this approach.

I understand that physicians’ and pharmaceutical companies’ over-reliance on opioids bears some responsibility for our present situation. However, I strongly believe that developing a doctor-prescribed medical solution is superior to marijuana legalization, which has proven long-term harm for our society.

Friends, the unthinkable has happened. I am (gulp) no longer (long, dramatic pause) a dance mom (cue tears).

Our daughter informed us HUMOR last week that she wanted to quit competitive dancing.

After five years of sequined booty shorts, Kardashian faux lashes and jazz hands out the wazoo, she is hanging up her tap shoes.

Now a freshman in high school, she wants more time for studying, socializing and work.

I mean, I get it. Dance takes enormous commitment and sacrifice, both from the dancer and the parent. I’ve lost track of how many days I’ve spent at various performing arts centers watching hundreds of routines to see my baby on stage for literally three minutes. And don’t get me started on the cost! Seriously, don’t, because I think I still owe from last year. Heck, on some level, I even believe this was the right call.

But when she read the text to her coaches explaining her decision, I cried. Partly from pride – the writer in me couldn’t help but notice her elegant and mature use of language – but mostly because I realized that her quitting meant that so was I. No more hanging with fellow dance moms at conventions; no more secretly judging reprehensible costume choices; no more complaining about the weekend-long competitions, even though I actually looked forward to the multiple Steak ‘n Shake runs and book-reading opportunities. The truth is that I loved being a dance mom and wasn’t prepared for that part of my life to end.

Perhaps more importantly, what nonsense am I supposed to write about now?

Finding Grandpa’s shaving gear Commentary by Ward Degler My grandpa was an old man when he died. That was 1974. Grandma spent another two decades living by herself with her dog in the house that Grandpa PLAIN TALK built in 1910.

After Grandpa’s funeral, Grandma told me to take whatever I wanted from his workshop because she planned to call the junkman to get the rest of it the next day. I carted away some tools and a small amount of lumber. I also took the smoking cabinet that had sat next to his living room chair for as long as I could remember. After all those years the cabinet was rich with the odor of pipe tobacco.

On a whim, just before bidding Grandma goodbye and heading back home, I picked up Grandpa’s shaving gear from the bathroom. There was a straight razor and a shaving brush, among other items.

Back home I set up the smoking cabinet in our bathroom as a place to keep toiletries and such, and placed Grandpa’s shaving gear on top as a reminder of the man who had used them for more than a half century.

Then, a couple Christmases ago, my granddaughter introduced her new boy-

friend, a young man of many interests and talents, not the least of which was making shaving soap. I received a sample of it labeled “Cedar and Leather” as a Christmas gift.

Sometime after the first of the new year, I had run out of Gillette Foamy and decided to try the new soap. I was impressed. The soap produced a rich, creamy lather that softened my beard and was easy on my skin.

At first, I lathered the soap with my hands and applied it to my face. Then one morning I spotted the shaving brush on top of Grandpa’s cabinet and decided to give it a try, with the realization that it was more than 100 years old and might fall apart the first time I used it. That was almost a year ago. I’m working on my second bar of soap, and the shaving brush is still working perfectly.

I have no plans, however, to ever try the straight razor.

Surveys show that most people hate at least one part of their body. I’m not happy with my ears, for example. I HUMOR think they stick out more than they should. My wife says I’m crazy, and to be that obsessed with my own looks makes me appear elfish. I’m hoping she meant selfish.

Motorcycle ride to help kids

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville American Legion Riders will host the 12th annual Josiah’s Ride Cruzin’ 4 a Cure Sept. 22.

AMERICAN LEGION The motorcycle ride will benefit two local children diagnosed with leukemia or lymphoma.

“This year there were two families in need,” said Chrissy Koenig, a member of the Zionsville American Legion Riders. “We keep hoping and praying one year we won’t know of any family in need and we’ll just raise the money and put it in a savings account until next year, but that hasn’t happened yet.”

This year’s event will support Riley McGuire, a 9-year-old who was diagnosed with lymphoma earlier this year and Jackson Stout, 5, who was diagnosed with leukemia last year.

The day begins with a breakfast at the Zionsville American Legion. Cost is $5 for non-riders. A balloon release will follow to remember two sponsor children who lost their battles. Motorcycle engines rumble to signify the start of the ride at 10:45 a.m.

Ganache Chocolatier, part of Zionsville for 22 years, will close in MAIN STREET September.

Owner Lisa Lueck said that the decision to retire from chocolate making was the result of small circumstances and a desire to spend time with family.

The business started on Cedar Street but moved to its current Pine Street location 18 years ago, a few days after Lueck gave birth to her daughter.

Lueck said the worst part has been telling her children and her employees.

“It’s hard to let people know and it makes me very sad, but I also have to be happy,” she said. “My stress level will go down, so I’m certain it’s the right thing to do.”

With two children heading to college and one in high school, Lueck is going to devote more time to her family and to quilting, a hobby that turned into a business after making blankets through Zionsville United Methodist Church for the ill or recently baptized.

“I am very grateful for all my customers,” she said. “It’s nice for me to know that people like my chocolate that much.”

Lueck started the chocolate shop after spending several years as a CPA. She still maintains her license.

Lueck doesn’t plan to order more chocolate, so she’ll continue to sell her inventory of truffles, creams and bark until it’s gone.

The store will close when all chocolates are sold, which she estimates will be late September. She also sells napkins, cards and gift bags and will be selling her equipment and display cases.

Carmel Symphony Orchestra post proved to be perfect fit for Davis

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Alan Davis figured his Carmel Symphony Orchestra post was a good place to start as he moved from the museum MUSIC field to the orchestra world.

“I thought, ‘I’ll be here two or three years and I’ll take that leap to a larger orchestra,’” Davis said.

Although he has had those opportunities, Davis never saw a reason to leave.

“Why would I ever leave Carmel with the support I get from everybody and The Palladium?” Davis said. “The job I thought would be a temporary stepping stone turned out to be a dream job. I loved every minute of it.”

Davis, who announced his retirement earlier this year, spent 18 years as CSO’s president and chief executive officer.

Davis, 69, became executive consultant when Kimberly Dimond took over as executive director July 16. Davis, who will step down from that position Sept. 28, is proud of his long list of achievements.

“I’m proud the growth the organization has experienced over those 18 years,” Davis said. “We went from a small community orchestra playing in high schools and churches with a very small budget to the major regional orchestra we are today playing in The Palladium. The quality has grown over those 18 years. I wasn’t music director but I have a lot of pride in supporting that artistic growth of the orchestra. We’re much more visible now, I’m proud of that. We’ve expanded our educational offerings for kids and we’re going to do that again this year coming up.”

Davis said he is proud of the staff over the years, particularly Vice President and General Manager Denise Ryan.

“She’s been my right and left hand,” Davis said.

On a personal note, Davis is grateful for of all the friends he has made in the community.

“As I tell people, although I might sleep in Speedway, I really feel like I reside in Carmel,” Davis said. “I’ve made countless

friends over the years. Those are things I’ll take with me when I retire, all those friendships, the mayor, the city council, the township government, all of our donors and patrons. They’ve all become personal friends.”

Larry Lawhead, a longtime CSO board member whose term as chairman ended June 30, praised Davis for his role in CSO’s development.

“He’s a rare administrator who combined his Ph.D. musical training with administration balance,” Lawhead said.

Davis, a 1967 Speedway High School graduate, returned to Indianapolis from

Missouri in 1989, serving as a director of public programs for the Indianapolis Museum of Art. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University’s music school. He received a doctorate in musical arts from Arizona State.

“I want to travel some more,” Davis said of his future plans. “I’d love to go back to Italy. I’ve not seen Austria or parts of Germany, especially since the reunification of Germany. I’d like to do a little more traveling in Southeast Asia.”

Frequently, Davis takes his vacation to visit a close friend in Thailand.

“He gets me a condo in the building on the beach next to his place,” Davis said.

“My condo costs me about $275 for three weeks. I couldn’t stay downtown Indianapolis for a weekend for that. I love the beach. I sit on the beach and listen to audiobooks on my iPod.” Davis, who started playing the organ when he was 12, has been a church musician most of his life. For the past 27 years, he has been the minister of music and worship at Westview Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Davis said he still plans to attend as many CSO concerts as he can.

“My heart will always be with this symphony,” Davis said. “You can’t give 18 years of your life into something and just walk away and not care what happens.”

Murray’s New Worlds postponed editorial@youarecurrent.com Because of a conflict in the artists’ schedules, The Palladium performance of New Worlds: Bill Murray, Jan Vogler & Friends, which had been scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Carmel venue, has been postponed.

The Center for the Performing Arts plans to reschedule the event later in the 2018-19 season, but ticket sales have been suspended until the new date can be announced.

Tickets purchased for the original date will be honored for the rescheduled performance. For questions, contact the box office at 317-843-3800.

The Palladium has added a performance by the Cool City Band, featuring classic swing sounds from the 1930s and ‘40s, at 8 p.m. Sept. 7. Guests will have the opportunity to dance on The Palladium stage.

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 8235 E. 116th St., Suite 245, Fishers What to get: Marinated beef tips Price: $16.95 Anna’s take: Pure Eatery’s marinated beef tips are the embodiment of comfort food. The relatively new menu item features beef tenderloin tips, pickled banana peppers and broccoli atop a bed of rice tossed in a pepper cream sauce. I opted for asparagus instead of broccoli. The hearty meal is very filling, and the sauce has a slight kick to it.

The tenderness of the meat counteracts the crispness of the veggies and the kick of the peppery cream-based sauce.

Another option Pure Eatery presented me was its blackened tilapia over a bed of pearled Israeli couscous tossed in pesto and sautéed squash and zucchini for $13.95.

Talk about portion sizes. For the healthier diners out there, this meal would be an excellent option with its giant slab of tilapia serving up a hefty amount of protein. The

Save for a few brunch items, Pure Eatery cooks all of its menu items in olive oil instead of butter as a healthier option. Many of the menu items come with the diner’s choice of side, and all of Pure Eatery’s salad dressings are gluten-free.

Pure Eatery also has locations in Fountain Square in Indianapolis and Lafayette.

Suggested pairings: Pair the marinated beef tips with a Taxman Brewing Co. Deduction beer, an Ironstone Pinot Noir or a Dark and Stormy cocktail. Pair the blackened tilapia with Fountain Square Brewery hefeweizen, a Sauvignon blanc from 13 Degrees Celsius or a basil lemonade Long Island.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com A beer festival featuring only firkins will be the first of its kind in Indiana when Union Brewing Co., 622 S. Range Line Rd. Suite Q, EVENT hosts the event from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 1.

Firkins are beers fermented in casks and served out of the cask. Approximately 10 Indiana breweries will attend the indoor/outdoor event and offer 25 to 30 beers out of 9-gallon casks.

Knepp “This is the first event of its kind in the state, a cask ale-only festival,” said Justin Knepp, founder of Indiana on Tap, which is hosting the festival with Union Brewing Co. “All these other festivals serve cold beer out of kegs, but (with firkins) the beer is fermented in these casks. It’s the craftiest of craft beer in the world, and as much as you try, no two cask beers will be the same due to the fermentation process.”

All of Union Brewing Co.’s beers are cask beers. Some of the other participating breweries have brewed firkins before, but many will be doing so for the first time.

“For the craft beer fans out there, it truly is utterly neat,” Knepp said. “It’s already what makes Union Brewing Co. different. The goal was to create a space that the homeowners could use to entertain family and friends by adding defined spaces and storage.

1. The biggest transformation came from adding a wet bar and peninsula for seating. The new cabinetry added plenty of storage space.

2. In addition to the bar seating, bench seating also was added around the pool table near the bar area. Bench seating is a perfect hidden storage solution.

3. A theater room was created by adding a wall and a doorway with a sliding barn door. This makes it easy to close off the theater room for privacy or leave it open to the rest of the basement.

4. An entertainment system was added, creating convenient storage for the sound system, game consoles and controllers.

5. Additionally, new luxury vinyl tile replaced the carpet throughout the basement.

Background info: This home in the Long Ridge West neighborhood of West Carmel doesn’t appear to need much remodeling. The reason the homeowners were looking to remodel was not because the space was outdated but because it didn’t function well for them.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The original basement was underutilized because it lacked defined spaces and storage solutions. The layout of the space didn’t work for how the homeowners wanted to use it. The original basement used basic materials that didn’t fit the owners’ personal style.

Churches amid the fortress Commentary by Don Knebel An area of modern Cairo contains what is said to be the best surviving remains of a Roman fortress. The fortress, which fell to the Muslims, is now at the TRAVEL heart of Christian Cairo.

In the sixth century B.C., the Persians, then in control of Egypt, erected a fortress just east of the Nile River near where an ancient canal led to the Red Sea. The fortress marked the dividing line between Lower (northern) and Middle Egypt, where boats on the Nile paid tolls for transferring from one region to the other. A town developed around the fortress, called “Babylon,” for reasons that are not entirely clear.

When the Romans gained control of the area in about 30 B.C., they recognized the strategic importance of Babylon and built an expansive brick and stone fortress near the river, featuring multiple bastions around the perimeter. The fortress was connected to the Nile by a drawbridge supported between two circular towers, each 108 feet in diameter. Babylon was later associated

with the journey of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus to Egypt to escape King Herod and became the seat of a Christian bishop.

In 640 A.D., Christian defenders of the Babylon Fortress held out for six months before being captured by Muslim invaders.

After the Muslims gained control of Egypt, they allowed Christians to build churches within the fortress walls. The famous “Hanging Church,” built in the seventh century, is suspended between the south gate towers of the fortress. The circular Church of St. George was built in the 10th century over the foundation of the northern bridge tower. Six other churches, a convent and the Coptic Museum are all now within the perimeter of the former fortress, designated “Coptic Cairo” for the Egyptian Christians who still worship in this area.
